Three Years and Counting!
T
his month marks our 37th issue, but it seems like just yesterday Mike and I were having an offhand conversation about starting a magazine. This is an amazing adventure and to be able to do this with my best friend is a dream come true. None of this would be possible without the unbelievable talents of our writer Douglas Matus and photographer Ann Beck. These two individuals have made my sometimes convoluted visions come alive. Our supporters and community partners have stood by us in feast and famine and we are forever grateful. If you have been a reader of West FW for any length of time, you can guess that I love sharing stories from my daily happenings. I am so fortunate that I get to meet some of the greatest people Fort Worth has to offer. We can’t thank you enough for all of your helpful advice, suggestions, and encouragements. We are so blessed to be allowed into your homes each month and here’s to many more years and many more stories. We want to wish you a blessed holiday season and as always we hope to see you around town!

or almost 20 years, P.S. The Letter has provided west Fort Worth with a trusted destination for fine gifts, quality paper goods, wedding and bridal registry services, and much more. Owner Linda Motley -- along with her dedicated staff – has emphasized service and quality products to the extent that her Camp Bowie Boulevard store has outgrown its space. In advance of P.S. The Letter’s move to a new location, scheduled to occur in mid-summer 2017, Linda is hosting one final Open House event. On December 1st, from 2 to 7pm, come say hi to Linda and the store’s “greeter” Lillian, a 5-year-old west highland light terrier. In anticipation of the Open House event and P.S. The Letter’s move, we talked to Linda about the store’s past, its formula for success, and its exciting future. Tell us a little about your background, and what led to your ownership of P.S. The Letter. Linda: After I completed graduate school I worked for American Airlines for 13 or 14 years. I had two kids during that time, and when I realized I was never seeing them, decided to retire. After about three weeks of “stay-at-home”, I was climbing the walls. I knew there had to be some happy in-between, and saw a sale flyer for a store.
12
West FW Lifestyle | December 2016
P.S. The Letter existed before I got involved. It used to actually be two different stores: The Letter, a stationery store; and P.S., a gift store, named for its owner. Carter Bowden purchased The Letter, then P.S., and merged them. I recognized the business, and had always wanted to work in the bridal industry. So, 19 years ago, I got my start as the owner. What’s the unique role you see yourself as filling, and what sets P.S. The Letter apart? Linda: We specialize in paper, and do all kinds of invitations, announcements, and stationery. We also offer everything you could need for the tabletop, including china, crystal, and silver. Between those two, we handle a lot of wedding services and bridal registries. Over the years, we’ve expanded to include a lot of fine items appropriate for gifts, including frames, baby items, gourmet food, and bath and body goods. Our goal is to have a great selection of gifts for every occasion, and have also expanded into leather goods, jewelry, and purses. In addition to our products, we provide great customer service and strive to make it easy and pleasurable to shop. We also offer free local delivery, and provide complimentary gift-wrap services. What’s something that tends to surprise people about P.S. The Letter? Linda: Most people have no idea of the range and depth of our product selection. Our name can be a little misleading, as it suggests that we are purely a paper goods store. Obviously, we’re much more than that. People will walk in, and they’re just amazed to see everything that we have in the store. Do you offer any special items or services for Christmas? Linda: Our gift-wrapping is complimentary all year long, and we’ll have holiday-themed paper for Christmas. We’ll offer lots of Christmas decorations and décor, as well as Christmas tabletop goods. One thing we’re bringing back from last year is our exclusive Christopher Radko ornament. It’s called “Jolly Old Ft. Worth”, and was a huge success among our customers. We have many other specialty ornaments, and carry lots of seasonal table patterns and Christmas linens. We also do holiday invitations, cards, and gift tags. We like to think we’re a great one-stop shop for the holiday season. What can you tell our readers about your move and annual Open House event? Linda: We recently broke ground at our new location, where we’re constructing a new building. We’ll be located at the corner of Bryce and Hulen, less than a mile from our current location. We’re doubling our space, which is greatly needed, and we’ll have much more parking. On Thursday, December 1st, we’ll have an Open House event from 2pm to 7pm. It’s our standing tradition for the holidays, and is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to our customers. We’ll have hors d’oeuvres, wine, and other refreshments, and will offer 15 percent off customers’ entire purchases.

n December 10th, Fort Worth’s premier gala returns to raise money for the worthiest of causes: the patients of Cook Children’s Medical Center. Held annually since 1953, the 63rd Jewel Charity Ball promises to once again act as a spectacular signifier of thanks to the donors who enable the work of Jewel Charity. Jewel Charity donors look forward to the black-tie ball as one of the highlights of the year. This year’s event, in addition to its typical celebratory nature, promises to impact children even more through the new Care4Kids Project. In response to donor's wishes for additional ways to help, Jewel Charity has created an avenue to make special gifts directly to Cook Children’s patients. “Jewel Charity was started by two ladies, Billie Bransford Clark and Nenetta Burton Carter, who saw the need for healthcare for children,” says Mary Anne Polson, president of the Jewel Charity Executive Committee. “There was a group of nine or so who got together and planned to raise money for the hospital. Our bylaws and mission, everything goes to support the hospital.” The first Jewel Charity Ball, held in 1954, raised $9,000 for Fort Worth Children’s Hospital. The hospital itself became Cook Children’s Medical Center after a merger with Cook Children’s Hospital in 1985. This esteemed institution has become one of the premier children’s hospitals in the United States. “We’ve always stayed true to the fact that we want to support uncompensated care for children,” says Polson. “The board now votes every year for one or two special projects that we can focus on. This year, our two special projects are the new heart center and new Heart and Behavioral Health centers.”
18
West FW Lifestyle | December 2016
Since that first ball, Jewel Charity has contributed more than $66 million dollars toward the care of patients at Cook Children’s Medical Center. Staffed and operated fully by volunteers, Jewel Charity seeks out donations from people, businesses, and foundations that care about the health of Fort Worth children. The annual ball provides donors with an opportunity to gather and recognize each other’s work to support a noble enterprise. “The ball is always a spectacular evening,” says Polson. “Everyone looks forward to it. This year, there’s a band coming in from San Francisco, and another that will play in the cocktail area. The ball’s official jeweler for this year, Eiseman Jewels, will have many lovely pieces for guests to view and buy.” Jewel Charity Ball invitations are available to guests who have donated at least $2,500 to Jewel Charity in 2016. Jewel Charity’s donors, called “Angels”, will have additional opportunities to support Cook Children’s the
night of the event. The ball itself, held at The Fort Worth Club, will emphasize philanthropy and community, while guests enjoy cocktails, a dinner buffet, exquisite décor, dancing, live music, prize raffles, and much more. A new addition to this year’s ball presents a way to directly help individual kids: the Care4Kids Project, which allows guests to buy specific items that go straight to patients. “This year we’ll also have a focus on four items that go directly back to the hospital,” says Polson. “These are prayer bears, which go to every child who enters the hospital; helmets used to shape children’s heads; special needs camps; and mamaRoo rocker chairs.” A major component of the celebration comes from the jewels themselves, presented by Eiseman Jewels for sale to attendees. Throughout the evening, guests can appreciate an exquisite range of timepieces and jewelry, with items from numerous collections that include Katie Decker and Seaman Schepps, in addition to Eiseman’s own signature colored stone and important diamonds collection. Watches will include pieces from numerous fine collections as well, including Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and many more. As with every component of the Jewel Charity Ball, the sale of all these items helps support the children of Cook Children’s Medical Center. “The jewels provide an excellent opportunity to buy Christmas gifts,” says Polson. “The ball itself promises to be a spectacular evening. We’ll eat and dance, enjoy the occasion and celebrate our angels.” Registration for this year’s ball closes on December 1st. SUNDANCE SQUARE
Christmas Once again, the heart of downtown Fort Worth goes all out for the holidays.

A
general lack of snow has never diminished the holiday atmosphere of Fort Worth’s downtown. The heart of the city goes all out for Christmas, and welcomes those from surrounding areas to celebrate annual milestones, develop shared memories, and strengthen bonds of communal spirit. For years, people have associated the holiday season in Fort Worth with the XTO Parade of Lights. This signature event certainly captures much of what makes the season special, from the buoyant atmosphere, to the palpable excitement, to the merry twinkle of lights and festive presence of floats and performers. Downtown Fort Worth’s holiday revelry hardly begins and ends with the parade, however. Sundance Square, which oversees the parade, has gone above and beyond with additional features and events to make Cowtown Christmases truly special. In fact, if you can forgive the absence of ice, snow, and reindeer, you’d be hard-pressed to find a comparable Christmas wonderland — short of the North Pole itself.
DECK THE BOUGHS
If you love Christmas, you probably wish it lasted longer. It can sometimes seem as if the holiday has barely arrived, and you’re left with shredded wrapping paper, empty stockings, platters of Christmas cookie crumbs, and the empty realization that Christmas has once again come and gone. Thanks to Sundance Square, Fort Worth gets more mileage out of its holiday. Christmas begins on November 14th at 9AM, when local dignitaries, Sundance Square representatives, and members of Green Mountain Energy arrive to raise the city’s official tree. Of course, this is no simple tree farm specimen. In a city with character as outsized as Fort Worth, only a special variety of behemoth will do. This year, the chosen tree is a 57-foottall blue spruce, harvested in Michigan and trucked all the way to Fort Worth. Sundance Square’s process for selecting and obtaining the tree is suitably adventurous. “We have a tree broker who travels to Michigan and goes to look at trees,” says CONTINUED >

SUNDANCE SQUARE CHRISTMAS (CON TI N U ED)
Tracy Gilmour, marketing director for Sundance Square. “They’re so large, we have to buy them off private property. He always looks for trees between 55 and 60 feet tall, of the right shape and symmetry. Once a tree is found, the tree broker approaches the homeowners and asks if they’ll sell it.” If “tree broker” has suddenly become your dream job, you’re not alone. There’s something particularly satisfying in the notion of driving through far-flung forests, searching for the perfect tree to realize a city’s Christmas dreams. If you wonder how a homeowner could let such a magnificent tree go, consider this: oftentimes such massive specimens get cut down no matter what, at the homeowner’s personal cost. “These kinds of trees grow aggressively and quickly,” says Tracy. “There are times when they dwarf a house, or are growing too close, and they will have to get taken out. It works out for the homeowner if they get paid for the tree. It’s a win-win.” It’s also impossible to imagine a better afterlife for a tree than as the object of appreciation for an entire city. “It’s hard to see a beautiful tree get cut down,” continues Tracy. “But it then comes to Texas and gets enjoyed by tens of thousands of people.” The tree will rest in unadorned majesty only brief ly, as the efforts to decorate and illuminate the behemoth get started well before the lighting ceremony. On November 19th, festivities begin at 4pm to herald the tree lighting and arrival of a certain special dignitary. Attendees to the ceremony can enjoy holiday carols, numerous photo ops, and, of course, the main event: “It takes all week to decorate the tree,” says Tracy. “Lights get strung on Tuesday, ornaments hung on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, the Santa set and finishing touches go up. Saturday night at 6pm, the lights get turned on.” 22

A CERTAIN HOLIDAY CELEBRITY
Santa Claus – or his authorized representatives – will certainly make the rounds of many locations throughout the holiday season. Once again, however, his premier showcase in Fort Worth will occur in the heart of downtown. The lighting of the tree serves as the crowning adornment of Santa’s Fort Worth headquarters: Sundance Square. The jolly old elf will be available to hear Christmas wishes and pose for photos from November 19th through December 23rd. The hours for his daily appearance can change, so make sure to visit www. sundancesquare.com for specifics. As anyone who has experienced the Sundance Square Santa knows, this particular representative of Christmas shines as a true embodiment of the season. Not only that, but children – and adults – who have only visited Santa in the confines of a shopping mall would do well to experience the shared joy and charm of this public iteration. “We wanted to be able to have a community Santa,” says Tracy. “We’ve always had the downtown Christmas tree, and the Santa becomes a natural extension when you have that great décor. We want Sundance Square to be a natural destination for families. Our décor and Santa hours have dramatically expanded, which was done by design. We want to have a Santa that is accessible.” The Sundance Square Santa is indeed available to all. Children of all ages – including those otherwise considered “adults” – are welcome to visit Saint Nick and get their picture taken. Pets are also welcome, and photos require only a $10 donation to benefit the Fort Worth Sister Cities’ International Scholarship Fund.

SUNDANCE SQUARE EVENTS
While the tree, décor, and Santa Claus provide a vibrant centerpiece, the Sundance Square Christmas experience hardly ends there. Bass Performance Hall hosts a series of notable holiday performances, each of which could inspire a new family tradition. This year’s selection includes Cirque Dreams Holidaze and, a perennial favorite in Fort Worth, The Nutcracker. Post-Christmas, you can jazz up your New Year’s Eve with A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. Throughout the Christmas season, lunchtime in Sundance Square gets made merry thanks to the caroling of various choir groups. Young performers from Greater Fort Worth area schools will showcase their talents on the Sundance Square Plaza Stage throughout the weekday lunch hours. For dates and times for these performances, in addition to those at Bass Performance Hall, visit www.sundancesquare.com. Of course, no trip to Sundance Square is complete without a meal at one of the many fabulous restaurants, or time spent browsing among the shops. A new addition, just in time for the holidays, complements the other seasonal offerings perfectly. Houston St. Toy Company arrives to put a sparkle in the eyes of children, and give parents a independent source for educational, unique, and interesting toys. Sundance Square’s support of this venture, along with everything else it offers to make Christmas special, showcases the depth of its dedication to Fort Worth. “We’ve been evolving for over 30 years,” says Tracy. “Over the last three years, Sundance Square has gone through giant leaps. Celebrating the holidays here has always been a great tradition, and this will be another great year with family and friends.”

Dentist of Many Talents

r. William C. Whittle has made a career of bringing smiles to west Fort Worth. Over 35 years, Dr. Whittle has created a name for himself as the dentist of choice for the needs of his large and loyal clientele. From check-ups and general dentistry, to restorative work, surgeries, and cosmetic needs, Dr. Whittle displays a level of professional excellence matched only by his concern and care for his patients. A native of Fort Worth, Dr. Whittle grew up on the west side and attended TCU. Two years in the US Public Health service followed, as did a general residency in New Orleans. When it came time to open his own practice, Dr. Whittle knew exactly which community he wanted to serve. “We’re a family practice that does cosmetics and a little bit of everything,” says Dr. Whittle. “Partials, prosthetics, implants, restorations; basically, I’m a general dentist. My daughter is a hygienist here, and my son is also a dentist. I love what I do.” As everyone in the Whittle Dentistry community knows, what sets the good doctor apart is his personal charm and boundless enthusiasm. Outside of his practice, these qualities find a couple of especially festive outlets in the holiday season.

West FW Lifestyle | December 2016
For the past 23 years, Dr. Whittle has pursued an interest in barbershop quartet-style, acapella singing. For those unfamiliar with the specifics of barbershop singing, the style centers on the close, four-part harmonies exemplified in the traditional “quartet” structure. For 20 years, Dr. Whittle honed his skills and contributed to the Fort Worth chapter of the international Barbershop Harmony Society. About seven years ago, he joined Vocal Majority, a Dallasbased men’s chorus with over 100 members. Also a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, Vocal Majority has performed across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, and can boast
12 gold medals in the annual BHS competitions. Vocal Majority recently set new records with its scores in district competitions, and plans to pursue its 13th gold medal in Las Vegas next summer. If you’d like to catch them locally, the chorus’s Christmas shows provide an immensely popular option. The shows, all held at the Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas, occur on December 1st and 2nd at 8pm, with an additional matinee and evening show on Sunday, December 4th. “The first half of the show has some sketch elements, and it’s called ‘Home for the Holidays,’” says Dr. Whittle. “The story is that the men’s chorus is stranded at the airport, and sings carols as they’re trying to get home for Christmas. The second half of the show is all sacred music.” Tickets for Vocal Majority’s Christmas shows sell out quickly, so visit www.vocalmajority.com soon to check available showtimes. If you want to add some Christmas cheer to your own gathering, you can book Dr. Whittle’s own traditional barbershop quartet. For inquiries in this regard, contact his office at 817-249-5522. When he’s not contributing to four-part harmonies, Dr. Whittle raises a different kind of long, lonely whistle. As a vintage train aficionado, Dr. Whittle has volunteered over the years for the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. The Grapevine Vintage Railroad consists of two engines, a set of luxurious, fully restored Victorian coaches, and a dedicated team of conductors, engineers, and brakemen. “Our steam engine, which is currently under repair, was actually used in California as a pumper for fires,” says Dr. Whittle. “It was built in 1896. We also have the diesel engine, which was built in 1954.” For those who want to experience the singular joys of vintage railway travel, the Grapevine Vintage Railroad’s typical offering consists of a ride from Grapevine to the Fort Worth Stockyards. Throughout the summer, this ride gets spiced up with a “train robbery” performance, where bandits on horseback hijack the train to the delight and entertainment of passengers. For the holidays, however, the Grapevine Vintage Railroad has a special destination: the North Pole. “During the holidays we have the North Pole Express,” says Dr. Whittle. “They usually start it on the weekend after Thanksgiving, and it goes right up to Christmas. Tickets sell out fast.” Guests board the train for a 30-minute ride, during which they’re entertained by elves and invited to join along for Christmas carols. The trip ends – where else? – at the North Pole, where guests get to meet Mrs. Claus and Santa Claus, receive special Christmas treats, and pose for a complimentary family photo with Santa. Road Trip
Get Lost in the Pines
BASTROP, TEXAS -- AND THE NEARBY RESORT OF LOST PINES -- PROVIDE AN IDEAL DESTINATION FOR AN EASY CHRISTMAS GETAWAY. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS PHOTOGRAPHY TERRY HAGERTY
W
hile the Christmas ideal centers on the concepts of hearth and home, it’s hard to deny the appeal of a seasonal getaway. On the one hand, those with children can take advantage of the winter break for a vacation opportunity; also, savvy parents can present the trip as a shared gift for everyone, and lessen some of the emphasis on materialism and presents. For those without children, holiday travel can represent a welcome break from the monotony of routine: endless drives back and forth through traffic, from one holiday gathering to another; after all, nothing kills holiday cheer quicker than the Christmas grind. When it comes to a Christmas getaway, however, destination is everything. To lessen the strain and stress of travel, a drivable distance is preferred. After all, if the purpose of a getaway is to reduce stress, you want to leave the flight cancellations to those forced into cross-country gatherings. Here in North Texas, we’re blessed with a host of nearby destinations. Bastrop, Texas is one that no holiday vacationer should ignore. 26
West FW Lifestyle | December 2016
Small Town Charm
Located 30 miles southeast of Austin, Bastrop sits along a scenic stretch of the Colorado River. The town center rests on a bluff on the east bank of the river, and offers a selection of local eats, funky boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, and historic buildings. Bastrop’s Main St. serves as a time capsule for small-town Americana, and features several mid-to-late 19th century buildings. Paw Paw’s Catfish House provides one of many delightful spots for lunch, while Baxter’s on Main offers steaks and seafood served amidst 1920s-style décor. The residential neighborhoods around Main St. are well stocked with prime examples of historic homes, many of which get decked out for the holidays. The town’s visitor center has designed useful walking and driving trails to ensure that visitors miss none of the exquisite examples of Greek Revival and Victorian architecture. To download the historic homes brochure, or learn more about what the town has to offer, check out www.visitbastrop.com.
Luxury in the Pines
Like sentinels arrayed above the town center, the loblolly pines of the Lost Pines Forest contribute the name for one of Texas’s premier destination resorts. Called ‘lost’ due to their separation from the better-known pine forests of East Texas, the Lost Pines stand as a relic marooned at the end of the last ice age. Lost Pines Resort & Spa occupies 405 of these scenic acres, and has its own one-mile stretch of Colorado River frontage. Guests can take advantage of the temperate seasonal weather to enjoy the resort’s majestic beauty, or venture into the adjacent 1,100-acre McKinney Roughs Nature Park.
As a Hyatt Regency destination, Lost Pines Resort & Spa offers plenty more than its scenic appeal, however. This AAA Four Diamond resort has 491 guest rooms – any one of which will serve as a cozy retreat for a holiday escape. Guests can enjoy holiday cheer at nightly s’mores roasts, weekly live music, or a host of other scheduled recreational activities. Outdoorsmen can give themselves the gift of archery or trap shooting, while anyone can enjoy the horseback trail ride opportunities presented at the resort’s Renegade Trailhead equestrian facility. Hiking and bird-watching opportunities abound across 18-miles of trails, while the Wolfdancer Golf Club presents a 7,205-yard, par-72 course situated across a dramatic stretch of forested terrain. A major part of the appeal of a Christmas getaway comes from a lack of cooking obligations. Lost Pines Resort & Spa does not disappoint on dining options, with choices that include the AAA Four Diamond-rated Stories restaurant, along with more casual choices like the Firewheel Café and Shellers Barrelhouse Bar. The resort’s spa provides the perfect escape for the holidays – and offers many ways to give yourself a little present. Spa Django contains 18 treatment rooms, a fully-outfitted salon, and a spa boutique that offers around 50 different service options. A heated pool allows you to enjoy a dip – even in the depths of December – with a view of the resort’s pond and surrounding landscape. The design of the resort emphasizes comfort, and reflects the manifold cultural influences that have shaped the area’s history. Wood floors and stone fireplaces abound, with building designs modeled on turn-of-the-century Texas architecture. A three-mile-long entry road separates the resort from the rest of world – a literal portal to a getaway Santa himself would envy. Faith Reflections
A New Chapter for the Church
RIDGLEA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, WHICH FOR 70 YEARS HAS SERVED ITS COMMUNITY, HAS NEW PLANS ON THE HORIZON.
ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK
N
othing defines a community as remarkably as a church. From the record of baptisms, to marriages and funerals, the number of hallmark events tied to a church renders it forever a landmark in the hearts of its members. Few churches represent this function so well as Ridglea Presbyterian. For the past 70 years, this west Fort Worth institution has made a home at 6201 Camp Bowie Blvd. As all things must pass, the church has now found itself at the crux of a transitional moment. Within the next couple of years, Ridglea Presbyterian will move to a new home. This change occurs not from coercion, but due to a fortuitous set of circumstances that has won the majority approval of its parishioners. Established in 1943, Ridglea Presbyterian will begin its next chapter at a new, as-yet-determined location on the west side. As Reverend Ryan Baer is quick to say, these changes are purely symbolic, as the heart and soul of Ridglea Presbyterian exists independent of any structure. “There’s a lot of life that’s been lived here,” says Baer. “It’s always hard to think about leaving a place that’s been home. At the same time, the church is not and never has been just a building. It’s always been the people.” For Reverend Baer and his congregation, the forthcoming move represents more of an opportunity than a challenge. In the Presbyterian church, issues of finances and property become the sole domain of the entire congregation.
28
West FW Lifestyle | December 2016
Because of this, the difficult decision to leave its historic home came from a clear majority vote from the church’s members. “This was not a conversation about closing,” says Baer. “We’re saying, okay God, you’ve got something new for us and we’re going to wait for you to show us. It was not a unanimous vote. The joke is that you can ask three Presbyterians for an opinion, and get five answers. The vote to move was passed by more than a 75 percent margin, however.” The reason for Ridglea Presbyterian’s move boils down to simple practicalities. The land for the church building was originally gifted through the large-heartedness of the Luther brothers. As these early developers of Fort Worth’s west side considered the area of Ridglea Hills, they saw a need for a church. “The land was given to us by the Luther brothers, and deed-restricted for 30 years to be a church. There were building restrictions to make it in the style of Ridglea Hills. As we grew over the years, we’ve kinda gotten by with a handshake and good neighbors. But it’s always been a challenge.” Churches have unique size demands. Every wedding, holiday service, and funeral expands the burden upon parking. On any given occasion, a beloved institution like Ridglea Presbyterian will quickly overstretch the limits of its few parking spots on Camp Bowie Boulevard. “As the church has grown over the years, between boy scout troops, community
groups, and Saturday weddings, the parking can get pretty crazy,” says Baer. “The only parking the church actually owns is 10 to 11 spots on Camp Bowie. Even if we were to refit the building and bring it up to code, it would cost a significant amount of money without adding a single parking space.” As west Fort Worth has developed, more attention has been paid to the commercial possibilities of its real estate. Nowadays, the church’s location, no longer suitable for this function, represented a prime opportunity to bring even more business and life to the area. At the end of the day, this presents a mutual opportunity, both for the parishioners of Ridglea Presbyterian — and the people of west Fort Worth. “The commitment to serving our community is not going away,” says Rev. Baer. “We just celebrated out sixtieth anniversary of chartering Boy Scout Troop 326, which has one of the highest number of Eagle Scouts in Texas. We’ve had a commitment to being generous with the gifts Gods has given us and being a blessing to our community, and that’s not going away.” This holiday season represents one of the final opportunities to celebrate Christmas at the historic Ridglea Presbyterian Church. The church will have a 6PM Christmas pageant service on the eve of the holiday, and a 9pm traditional candlelight communion. Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year, and the 11AM service will feature a holiday theme and carols.

Parting Thoughts
Home Real Home I
’m a creative. I pretend to be a designer. My entire job is to encourage women that they can create a beautiful, meaningful home. I’ve done it all wrong but I’m learning that it’s really not about the stuff at all, even when making a home. If I want my home to be a place of connection, I’ll ask genuine questions and get to know the people in my home. If I want my home to be a safe place to make a mistake, I’ll lower my standards for myself first, be forgiving of my own mistakes, laugh at myself—and allow others to see that. If I want my home to be inspiring, I’ll pay attention to what inspires me. If I want my home to be real, I’ll learn to embrace the imperfect, find the beauty in the undone, the broken, the unkempt, the everydayness and the mess.

West FW Lifestyle | December 2016
If I want my home to be comfortable, I’ll first stop apologizing and focus on others instead of myself. If I want my home to be a place of rest, I’ll consider my attitude and the tone I set when I am home. I’ll allow and plan for restful spaces. This is the kind of home and beauty we have to fight for. Anyone can put pretty stuff in a room. It takes intention to furnish a home with grace and rest and acceptance. I’m up for the challenge. I want to see past the worst and focus on the better. I want to search for the real beauty just waiting to be recognized. I want to make a home on purpose – with purpose. I’m making home a safe, inspiring and life-giving place so we can go out and be who we were created to be. The Joneses don’t need to be kept up with, and secretly, they are tired of setting the mythical standard. Homes are there to serve people, not the other way around. May your home serve you and others so fully that it’s worn thin and beautiful in all the right places.
