couple of weeks ago Brileigh, our 8-year-old granddaughter, and I went to Bass Hall to see the Ballet Cinderella. The Texas Ballet Company did not disappoint! It has been way too many years since I have attended a ballet and Cinderella with “The Noodle” was perfect. We started our evening at the new Toll House Store with a feast of cookies and milk, then on to Bass Hall. “The Noodle” used her highly trained eye for all things desirable to peruse the boutique offerings on tables in the Grand Lobby, but wisely decided on an autographed pointe shoe worn by Cinderella herself. Our seats, which were so graciously given to us by the Texas Ballet Theater, were fabulous! I can’t thank them enough. We were enthralled from start to finish. On the drive home, we discussed our favorite parts of the performance and it took me back to when my kids were little and our after show converBrileigh & Laramie Ray sations. I teared up a little at the nostalgia of it all. I am so thankful to be Brileigh and Laramie’s “GiGi” and am looking forward to sharing many fun adventures with them. This month’s issue is all about MOM! Laura Rutledge started a foundation to give back for the miraculous healing of her daughter. A group of precious kiddos tell us what they really think about their moms. Then we travel down San Antonio Way to the Hill Country to spoil your mom. We also have a group of moms that made social media a format for connecting with parenting challenges and needs. Whether you’re 2 or 42, you will always be your momma’s baby! My mom loved me so much she gave me her name and I want to take a line here and wish my lovely, hilarious, awesome Mom a Happy Birthday and Mother’s Day. Your love and support mean so much to me. I love you Mom!

After careful assessment of tonal quality, performance features and accessories, the committee selected the Johannus Ecclesia organ.“The tonal concept of the Johannus provides for classical pipe organ sound and orchestral instrumental voices including string and reed choruses,” said committee member Ed Ackerman with the American Guild of Organists. “The new instrument will provide an exciting sound in the favorable acoustics of the Chapel, and will provide organists with more tonal resources to play a wider range of organ repertoire, especially for wedding ceremonies and public recitals.”“We are very appreciative of the counsel of Ed Ackerman, Dale Bench, Glenda

THE RUTLEDGE FOUNDATION

A SURVIVOR’S JOURNEY THE RUTLEDGE FOUNDATION SEEKS TO RAISE AWARENESS AND FUNDS FOR YOUNG ADULTS WITH CANCER ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS

T

he onset of a health crisis prompts feelings of fear, helplessness and anger. The afflicted not only confronts issues of mortality and the anxiety of victimhood, but must somehow find the strength to fight for recovery. Loved ones can feel powerless, as their ability to help becomes limited to reassurances and, perhaps, the tasks of a caregiver. All of these negatives come to bear on scenarios such as personal injury or serious, but non-life threatening illnesses; of course, when the health crisis is cancer, the terminal connotations become pronounced, and the sufferer often gives themselves up to a world of percentages and best-case timetables. The Rutledge family of Fort Worth understands all too well the psychic, physical and emotional tolls of cancer. In particular, they understand the earth-shattering incongruity of a cancer diagnosis for a young person. In 2010, when Carley Rutledge was just 15 years old, she and her family received the worst news imaginable: persistent pain, previously misdiagnosed as a sports injury, was actually stage IV Ewing Sarcoma. This aggressive bone cancer primarily targets children and young adults. At a time when Carley should have looked forward to the joys of high school, graduation and college, she instead was forced to grapple with the implacability of fate. To make matters worse, treatments and percentages for the illness had not improved for over 30 years.

“My primary treatment had been in existence for decades,” says Carley. “The frontline treatment calls for 9 months of the most aggressive chemotherapy. Patients experience extreme weight loss and emotional side effects, and your body loses its ability to fight illness. Some patients are in the ICU every couple weeks.” Frustration mounted as the typical “scorched earth” treatment took its toll on Carley. When the cancer’s reemergence threatened to derail her plans for college, Carley and her family boldly pursued an alternative course: a clinical trial for a vaccine. “Kids barely survive the treatment that’s been in existence for 30 years,” says Laura Rutledge, Carley’s mother. “We asked ourselves, how has this not changed, and how can we fix it? When Carley went through the trial, it was the complete opposite. She went from living in sickness and fear, to having a completely healthy and normal life.” The birth of the Rutledge Foundation actually came before Carley’s cancer returned. Inaugurated with the first Gold Ribbon Games Kickball Tournament, this 501(c)3 was created to help aid in sarcoma research and provide care for cancer-stricken young adults. The revelation of an alternative therapy for Carley’s own illness reaffirmed the foundation’s efforts. “The foundation’s mission is three-fold,” says Laura. “To bring awareness to the young adult cancer population; to raise funds, CONTINUED >

specifically for targeted, non-toxic treatments; and to meet the needs of the young adult patient population.” This final point gets overlooked in both public perceptions and treatments of the illness. Young adult patients have unique needs and struggles, as exemplified in Carley’s own experience. “There’s no easy time to go through cancer, and in young adulthood it’s really difficult,” says Carley. “You’re so close to your future, and you’re realizing all the things you want to do; but you’re still a teenager, so you’re unstable. Many patients lose their friends. Everyone else gets to continue their education and be a normal kid. It hurts your confidence and stability.” Additionally, many young adults lack a support network, or don’t have insurance. Strikingly, fewer than three percent of cancer patients admitted to clinical trials come from this age group. Because of this, the Rutledge Foundation makes research and treatment its number one goal. “We’ve been funding research for Ewing Sarcoma and a new trial that targets the genes that cause the disease,” says Laura. “Carley’s tumor cells were used to make a targeted drug, the first ever specifically for this disease.” In addition to research funding, the Rutledge Foundation provides support for cancer patients. Carley’s Closet is a program that provides newly diagnosed teens and young adults with a care package that includes gift cards and comfort items. “It’s amazing how well received that program has been,” says Laura. “When you’re diagnosed as a young adult, you don’t see anyone your age at the hospital. The idea is to make them feel loved and cared for.”

f a mom could divide herself among the different roles she plays, she’d be able to staff a hotel: maid, chef, concierge, car service, manager and much, much more go into fulfilling the necessities of everyday motherhood. Another role, trip planner, gets added to this list throughout the year, as Spring Break and summer vacation demand getaways that can appeal to all members of the family. Those who live in Texas get the benefit of the state’s size and variety for vacation choices. Fort Worth moms can save themselves the hassle of air travel or, God forbid, passports, and choose from a massive selection of destinations. San Antonio combines ease of travel and attractions that include famed historical sites, world-class cuisine and stellar theme parks. Add to this list an exemplary destination resort — Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa — and you’ve got the makings of an unforgettable trip. Located about four hours from Fort Worth and 20 minutes from the San Antonio River Walk, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort recently benefited from a $34 million renovation. The resort presents an understated and rustic elegance reminiscent of a ranch house, with amenities that distinguish it as Texas’s premier destination hotel. From golf and tennis, to a luxurious spa and newly expanded water park, Hyatt Regency ensures that all members of the family can decompress. The history of the resort should resonate with travelers who want an authentic Texas experience. Situated across the 2,777 acres of the former Rogers-Wiseman ranch, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort maintains fidelity to its roots through a broad array of historic memorabilia and tributes to the ranching family. The resort’s landscaping emphasizes native flora, with an abundance of flourishes that include Turk’s cap, Mexican bush sage, agave, live oak, twisted leaf yucca and much, much more. In addition to the natural bounty, lovers of the outdoors will find plenty more to keep them occupied. A walking and jogging path combine with a full-on nature trail to give guests reasons to enjoy the fresh air. The resort has bikes available for those who want to explore on two wheels, while a play area has been modeled on the surrounding landscape for smaller outdoorsmen. Moms who want to keep the kiddos entertained can rely on Hyatt Regency for the heavy

lifting. With 300 acres open for exploration, the resort allows children to roam, and also has scheduled activities for supervised fun. Outdoor movies screen on the resort’s lawn, and kids (and adults) can take advantage of a nightly s’more roast. For kids aged 3 to 12, the resort has Camp Hyatt, a dedicated children’s program, with arts and crafts, exploration activities, games, birdwatching, and sandcastle construction on a manmade beach. Of course, many kids will gravitate to one of the resort’s star attractions: a recently expanded 5-acre water park. The park contains three separate swimming pools, waterfalls, a beach, the Rambling River tubing ride, and a FlowRider machine that generates waves across 40,000 gallons of water. The wave machine area, which is a feature found in only three hotels across the U.S., allows for “flowboarding,” a semblance of surfing that will bring a smile to anyone’s face. While the kids are off flowboarding, hiking, or enjoying a movie, mom and dad will find plenty 9800 Hyatt Resort Dr to keep themselves busy. San Antonio, Texas 78251 The resort boasts the 210-647-1234 only 27-hole championship-level golf course in San Antonio, with new bunkers, careful landscaping and expansive views of the Hill Country. The resort’s spa, Windflower, has been identified as a top 100 resort spa by Conde Nast Traveler. Situated within a live oak grove, the rejuvenative spa offers 50 to 80 minute treatments, a private pool, and rustic, soothing surroundings that incorporate rough-hewn timber, wood beams and native stone. Dinner options abound to ensure that guests never have to leave the resort. Antlers offers upscale cuisine in a casually elegant environment, with prime cuts, fish and game dishes served with seasonal vegetables. For an even more unbuttoned experience, guests can kick back and enjoy a meal at Cactus Oak Tavern inside the resort’s golf club, or indulge in poolside dining at Papa Ed’s Bar and Grill. If all of this sounds like your family’s perfect escape, reserve one of the 500 guest rooms or 58 suites for your next vacation. San Antonio’s sheer bounty of attractions may tempt you to leave the resort — or maybe you’ll save the sightseeing for next year.

A

s all mothers can attest, time flies as children grow. Sometimes it seems as if hardly a month passes, and the baby in diapers

has become the active toddler; another blink, and your youngest has received her driver’s license, and it will have seemed like yesterday that the college-age child attended his first day of kindergarten. The experiences and joys of childhood come only once — for parents and youngsters alike — and youthful perceptions are even more transient than physical milestones. As your children mature, the ways that they see you, all the charming insights and heartfelt impressions, change along with them. In celebration of Mother’s Day, we interviewed a group of children to learn just what they think and feel about mom. Their answers not only provoke chuckles and some heartfelt emotions, but serve as time capsules for a very special age. If you want to give a mother in your life the perfect gift, we’ve included some questions for your very own interview at the end.

Kids seem to live entirely in the moment. Without a doubt, though, all the day-to-day excursions with mom leave their traces in memory. Lily

Everyone knows that kids see (and hear) everything. But how well do they know their mothers? It’s forgivable to assume that the world of a child

is so full of wonder and stimuli that he or she spares hardly a thought for what mom’s doing. Our interviewees prove otherwise, however, as they offered some astute observations on their moms’ likes and dislikes.

THE LESSONS THAT MATTER

Moms and dads alike work hard to impart worthwhile, formative

important lesson she’s learned from mom, her ready answer was to stand up for friends should they ever get bullied. Melissa Hoskins’s three children, 13-year-old Izzy, 9-year-old Georgia, and 6-year-old Lily Kate, each have equally invaluable answers. Izzy has learned that individuality is of the utmost importance, and that one shouldn’t succumb to peer pressure. Georgia understands the importance of thought before action, while Lily Kate has learned from mom that she should never quit. Greyland Goff, 17-year-old son of Wendy Goff, sums up mom’s lessons with a saying: “Kill everyone with kindness, even if they’re not being kind.” Wise words, indeed.

9

SOME HARD TRUTHS

Of course, most kids do not come equipped with filters, and interviewers should prepare themselves for some all-too-honest answers. A child may see mom as an angelic queen — but that doesn’t mean they’ll fail to see what makes their mothers human. A few answers, while not humorously awkward, at least reveal the charming innocence of the responder.

TANGLEWOOD MOMS WHAT BEGAN AS A FACEBOOK GROUP HAS BECOME A COMMUNITY FOR SUPPORT AMONG FORT WORTH MOMS. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK

M

ost moms would agree that motherhood counts as the “greatest” of more than one category: as a challenge, reward and adventure, the special bond and experiences of mothers and children color the world around us. As Victoria Wise, founder of Tanglewood Moms puts it, “there is strength in numbers,” and the booming popularity of the Fort Worth-centric Facebook group and online community attests to a need for support and mutual enthusiasm among its members. Thanks to Tanglewood Moms, Fort Worth parents can celebrate the joys of motherhood together — and also swap tips and recommendations for everything from yoga studios to recipes. “We have a great community of women,” says Victoria of the Facebook group. “We don’t place restrictions on what people can share or post, and people recommend it to each other to find a babysitter, line up a summer job for a child, and other useful things.” 22

West FW Lifestyle | May 2016

Part of the success of Tanglewood Moms can be attributed to Victoria’s expansive skill-set and entrepreneurial drive. The mother of four children aged five to eight, she’s somehow found the time to launch and run multiple businesses over the past several years. Tanglewood Moms grew out of a desire to connect with fellow moms on Facebook, share advice and create a public forum. Motherhood presents a daily gauntlet of choices. Suggestions on what to cook, how to fill an afternoon, where to buy clothes, choices

of schools, after-school activities, craft ideas and much, much more, Tanglewood Moms draws upon the experiences of thousands of members to present valuable insights. Moms also need to reserve time for themselves, and Tanglewood Moms obliges with recommendations for day spas, boutiques, and date-night destinations. “We strive to keep the Facebook group an open forum,” says Victoria. “Members can use it for what they want, find out about resources and share them, all within a safe environment. It’s just a great community of women sharing.” Since the group’s creation in 2011, it has grown through leaps and bounds across several online venues. The original Facebook group, found at www.facebook.com/TanglewoodMoms, now has 4,500 members, with an additional 1,700 page likes. The group’s Instagram page, www.instagram.com/tanglewoodmoms, has over 7,100 followers, and appeals to moms and dads alike with a constant stream of inspirational, fun images. In 2015, Tanglewood Moms branched out into its own website, www.tanglewoodmoms.com, to connect users directly to relevant Fort Worth-area businesses. Visitors to the site can find listings for everything from home and yard services, to doctors and personal trainers. Conveniently organized into categories, the website allows visitors to quickly and efficiently browse among local interior designers, personal assistants, non-profits, pet care, photographers, realtors, graphic designers, and practically anything else that might help a busy, ambitious mom get the most out of life.

Another feature of the website, the Tanglewood Moms Blog, showcases the talents of Victoria’s team of top-notch writers. “My vision for Tanglewood Moms is to just keep growing,” says Victoria. “Last November we added a team of writers, each with a different perspective and topics they’re passionate about. We have sponsorships and business partners, and more and more people reaching out to help and connect with the cause.” The diversity of Tanglewood Mom’s readership is perfectly reflected in its core group of writers. Sarah Angle, the website’s adviser and contributing writer, has seen her work published in noteworthy venues such as the Washington Post, Texas Observer and Dallas Morning News. Other contributors showcase tips and insights from experiences of single motherhood, raising older children, frequent travel with babies and toddlers, and the management of careers against the demands of raising children. For new moms, not-so-new moms, recent Fort Worth transplants and Cowtown-lifers alike, Tanglewood Moms provides tips and suggestions on how to best enjoy the crazy adventure of motherhood. At the end of the day, all moms can use a little help; Victoria understands this as well as anyone. “It’s nice to know that other people are going through the same things you are, and to have support when you need it,” says Victoria. “If you’re in Fort Worth, certainly join Tanglewood Moms. Otherwise, find some groups to join. There’s strength in numbers, and we’re all just trying to hang in there.”

Hometown Hero FWPD'S NEIGHBORHOOD POLICE OFFICER PROGRAM FOSTERS CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT.

YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD POLICE ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK

24

West FW Lifestyle | May 2016

T

o protect and serve: these watchwords define the mission of the Fort Worth Police Department. For many people, though, officers exist as remote figures, separated by an air of authority that renders them, unfortunately, somewhat foreign. If your only direct contact with police comes through traffic stops, then you probably don’t appreciate these hardworking men and women as the dedicated, caring professionals they are. In order to encourage a greater sense of partnership between officers and community members, the Fort Worth Police Department instituted the Neighborhood Police Officer (NPO) program. Ridglea Hills gets the best that this program has to offer in Officer J. Allen Pennington. A native of Sweetwater, Texas, Officer Pennington not only keeps the neighborhood safe during work hours — he hangs his hat there at night. “I always wanted to be a police officer,” says Pennington. “Out in Sweetwater, I always watched the TV show Cops, and FWPD was always on there. I told my parents I wanted to work there, and my dad was like, ‘Are you sure?’” Pennington arrived in Fort Worth in 2004 to study at Texas Wesleyan University, where he graduated with a degree in criminology in 2008. Joined in Fort Worth by his hometown sweetheart, Pennington lived for awhile in a downtown condo before purchasing his home on the westside. As luck would have it, the Ridglea Hills NPO position soon became available. “I was assigned to the West 7th bike patrol unit,” says Pennington. “It just so happened that the Ridglea Hills NPO beat opened up when I put in for it. I still ride my bicycle, get to see and talk to people; it’s a really neat experience.” Officer Pennington’s involvement with his neighborhood exemplifies what the NPO program strives to accomplish. Assigned to a specific beat, NPO officers create a unique impact through direct relations with residents. NPOs are not required to answer normal patrol calls, so their focus remains fixed on their home territory. “Our main focus is on crime resolution and prevention,” explains Pennington. “We try to identify problems before they escalate, and we work closely with citizens on patrol, the Code Blue Program, which is CONTINUED > something I totally believe in.”

In addition to serving as a liaison, Officer Pennington and the other NPOs serve as invaluable community resources. As a readily available officer that residents feel comfortable contacting, NPOs bridge the gap between authority and service. Residents can reach their NPO directly via cell phone, and report issues or get follow-up information. You also don’t need an excuse to reach out to your NPO — a simple ‘hello’ is reason enough. “My goal is to meet everyone in my area and let them know what I do,” says Pennington. “People will call to report issues or follow up on things that occurred overnight. I also attend HOA meetings, crime watch meetings, and hold talks on crime prevention tips. I take pride in a proactive approach to police work, rather than reactive.” This proactive approach begins with the connections between officers and residents. As a bike patrolman, Officer Pennington appreciated the easy rapport he had with motorists and pedestrians. As an NPO, he finds himself becoming an object of positive attention even more frequently. “People will come up to me all the time and start conversations,” says Pennington. “People may want to ask me something, or simply shake my hand and say ‘thanks for the service.’ When people do that, you really feel like you’re making a difference.” An appreciation for law enforcement is widespread throughout Fort Worth. Officer Pennington credits community partnerships, like the Westside Business Association, with creating an atmosphere of support for the city’s officers. “The westside has a really good relationship with the police department,” says Pennington. “We encourage everyone to associate with

the benbrook economic Development corporation

one another and get involved with their community. It’s overwhelming how much support we get from the various businesses, for example.” A visit to the Fort Worth Police Department’s website can show you how to find your very own NPO. The next time you see him or her, or any FWPD officer, don’t hesitate to give them a wave or gesture of appreciation. For those that put their lives on the line, a ‘thank you’ can mean an awful lot. “There’s nothing more gratifying that helping people on a personal level,” says Officer Pennington. “When I go home at night, my goal is to feel like I made a difference.” As the residents of Ridglea Hills would surely say: mission accomplished, Officer Pennington.

Popovers with Strawberry Butter

CHRISTIE THOMAS

I recently purchased a new popover pan from Amazon because Mike had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned I wanted popovers. When the pan arrived it reminded me of lunches at the Zodiac in Neiman Marcus with my mom. I thought that my prime pan purchase was a great deal at only 13.99 and free shipping. Mike wasn't sure what to think but now he is in love with these light airy "Roll Things" that get special strawberry butter. THE ZODIAC INGREDIENTS

Taco Head of the Class AMONG A SLEW OF SPECIALTY TACO RESTAURANTS, TACO HEADS SETS A NEW STANDARD. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK

O

nce upon a time, west Fort Worth was a wasteland for late-night food options. When the bars closed or the munchies struck, the hungry would drift aimlessly in search of sustenance, and would settle for fast food, whatever was available at 7-11, or the dregs of their own fridges. Then, one bright and glorious day, hope arrived in the form of a small trailer, parked behind Poag Mahone’s off West Seventh. Like a beacon in darkest night, Taco Heads lured the famished with a selection of simple, exquisitely prepared tacos made with fresh, all-natural ingredients. With the birth of Taco Heads, no longer would the late-night hours remain the sole domain of greasy burgers; and now, the visionary behind Taco Heads, Sarah Castillo, has set out to conquer the daytime as well. Now open at 1812 Montgomery Street, Taco Heads’s new standalone restaurant has all the deliciousness of the late-night trailer transported into an attractive space for breakfast, lunch or dinner. “I wanted to grow, and when I started as a food truck that was always the goal,” says Sarah. “With the restaurant, we’ve kept it simple: all we added were four starters and four signature tacos, in addition to our traditional food truck tacos. We also have our signature cocktails and plan to open a full bar in early summer.” The original Taco Heads food truck — which remains open for business — appeared seven years ago. The genesis of the idea came to Sarah when, as a waiter, she would work late and have nothing to eat. “Back then there was Old South and Whataburger, and that was pretty much it,” says Sarah. “We would get off work and be starving. I would sometimes go to taco stands on the southside, and decided to bring that to us.” At its original location, Taco Heads’s hours are 6pm to 2am, firmly situated to make the most of the after-work and bar crowd. “It’s a rough lifestyle,” says Sarah of the effort to maintain the food truck hours. “After cleaning and winding down, I wouldn’t get home until 4am. Then I’d wake up and start prepping for the next day. From day one I knew I wanted to be a restaurant, but it never worked out until I met my business partner.” Sarah’s partner, Jacob Watson, helped her find the ideal location and get funding. If you’ve ever wondered whether God loves tacos,

30

West FW Lifestyle | May 2016

the story of how Jacob and Sarah met makes clear that fate intervened to bring the new Taco Heads into reality. “Jacob had a non-profit that used Uber to raise money,” says Sarah. “One Friday, he himself was Ubering and I was the first person he picked up. I told him what I did, and he gave me a book from his professor at Duke. He said that if I wanted to grow and needed an investor, to give him a call. The rest is history.” History continues to unfold in new and delicious ways at Taco Heads. Part of the the food truck’s original appeal came from the simplicity of its menu. Patrons could order chicken, pork, beef, or veggie tacos, with a few toppings and the option to add avocado. While many specialty taco places have gone over the top with crazy offerings, Sarah knew that simple quality will trump bedazzlement every time. “Legit tacos are legit tacos,” says Sarah. “You don’t need to stuff chicken and waffles into a tortilla.” Taco Heads’s fresh offerings come thanks TACO HEADS to the high-level food purveyors that Sarah 1812 Montgomery Street works with. For the seafood used in Taco Fort Worth, Texas 76107 Heads's new signature tacos, the restaurant 817-615-9899 sources from the same place used at upscale restaurants such as Waters and Piranha. “We have no MSG, nothing pre-made,” says Sarah. “We really take pride in our quality, and that’s one thing that sets us apart. We do that in the food truck as well. We don’t even own a freezer, actually.” If you don’t often find yourself wandering around West Seventh in the late-night hours, Taco Heads’s new restaurant provides the perfect opportunity to learn what “legit” tacos are all about. In addition to the traditional and signature tacos, Taco Heads offers delectable breakfast tacos to conquer the earliest of cravings. Whether it’s chorizo mexicano and egg, wild tilapia with garlic paprika and aioli, or an old-fashioned carnitas taco, Taco Heads is always muy deliciosa.

Parting Thoughts

When What was Lost

is Found WORDS MOLLY WILLIAMS

O

ver a dozen years ago, for a milestone birthday, my best friend gave me an exceedingly special gift. It was a sterling silver bracelet with links of my family members' birthstones and my late-in-life baby's name spelled out in silver baby blocks. I adored it. It was my all occasion accessory which I wore with great pride. And then, on my next birthday, it inexplicably disappeared. Maybe the wine at dinner helped me lose track of when I last felt it on my wrist, but one minute it was there, and the next gone. I was desolate. We tore the houses where we had gone that night upside down looking for it. I pestered the restaurant for weeks asking if it had turned up. Eventually I gave up looking, but never stopped being sad about the loss. And then, yesterday, a surprise. It came back. A chore much put off, that of sorting through my ridiculous collection of wrapping paraphernalia in the guest closet, led to the emptying of the storage box of ribbons, bows, tissue paper and gift bags. There, at the bottom, was my dulled but still lovely family keepsake bracelet. I can only surmise that it fell into a gift bag while a present was being opened, and there laid undetected for over eleven years. I polished it and immediately began wearing it again, this time first to the jeweler for a safety clasp. Its loss and recovery made me think about the nature of that which is valuable to us. I oddly enough had the bracelet all along, there in my closet, so hadn't really lost anything of true

value. But because it was lost to my wearing, and unaccounted for in my heart, I grieved. We treat many things as lost that are not. Losing faith is common, especially in times of sadness or stress, or perceived isolation from the things that make us happy. But the faith is there all along, waiting to be resurrected from the bottom of the box of unnecessary things, much like my bracelet. Regaining confidence in our spirituality ought to be as joyful as finding a piece of jewelry. Sometimes a dear friend will be lost to the busyness of living, which leaves us no time for long meandering phone calls catching up on each others' families. Peeking into their lives on FaceBook is no substitute for the meaningful shorthand speak that conjures decades of shared adventures and confidences. I grieve the loss of those roots in my life, but they, like the bracelet, are never gone, just waiting for me to sift through the right box of my past. Besides, I could not today be the person I am without the touch of those friends, so they will never be lost to me. So when lost things are "found" I will be thrilled, but they will remind me of all the remarkable things which are still a part of me, waiting to be brought back to my immediateness. That which is gone is not really, ever; it cannot be, as long as it has touched me. As long as friends, faith, love, family are still sought they are to be treasured. No matter how deep and unused the storage box.
