y Step-Father Jim, or Bonus Dad as I like to call him, gets in trouble on a weekly basis. Only, it’s not the normal kind of trouble you would expect. There is a game that he and Brileigh, aka The Noodle, play where she tells my mom all about some major infraction he has committed and my mom has to play along and pretend to scold him. Believe it or not, I play this game with them also. Jim has been in my life since I was 8 years old. He has always been the best playmate anyone could ask for, from riding bikes the whole length of the trinity trails, to pulling my grand-girls on a blanket through the house. All 3 generations of kids in my family have had the distinct pleasure of being his partner in crime/playmate. I was talking with my nephew Zach, who is now in his 30s, the other night and he was recalling all of the amazing memories he has with Jim. In fact, he was laughing so hard you would think it happened just yesterday. I speak for all of us with this assessment of Jim Basket (as the Noodle calls him). He is the funniest, silliest, kind hearted, most fun-loving, generous man and we are so blessed to have Jim Bassett in our lives. This month’s issue features some really great guys right here in our fair city. I had a lot to choose from and narrowing it down wasn’t easy. You will learn how the amazing Charlie Geren slimmed down by eating at Railhead. You will also discover that we have an awesome father and MLB pitcher located right here on the west side.

Uncommonly Great Food WITH A REINVENTED MENU, COMMON GROUND NEAR TCU COULD BECOME YOUR NEW FAVORITE RESTAURANT.

P

roximity to a university or college can serve as a boon to a restaurant or bar. Students provide a readymade and eager clientele, while game days, graduation and other events bring an influx of new patrons — most of whom have standards defined by expediency, rather than quality. It’s easy for “College Standard Bar & Grill” to coast on domestic beers and burgers, with design elements limited to university-themed pennants, posters and flat-panel televisions. While there’s no reason to discount the fun atmosphere of a traditional college-style bar and grill, the arrival of Common Ground at 3201 S. University Drive has raised the TCU area’s standard for refinement and polish. The brainchild of Chris Hutchinson, owner of Red Goose, Dagwood’s Grinders and Blue Bar and Grill, Common Ground arrives to stimulate palates and serve the needs of locals and students alike. The ambience and quality of Common Ground’s menu is such that it should lure patrons from outside the neighborhood — and give all of us a reason to visit University outside of game day. A Fort Worth native and 20-year veteran of the restaurant and bar business, Chris has long had his eye on the TCU area. “I’ve always wanted to get a spot near the university,” says Chris. “I wanted the chance to do something that was a cross between a college place and a neighborhood place. I heard about this space that the Londoner had started and then bailed on, and reached out and got into it.” Common Ground first opened in November of 2015. Located at the corner of University and Devitt Street, the bar and restaurant 14

West FW Lifestyle | June 2016

sits just one block south from the busy intersection at West Berry. A well-appointed interior calls to mind an upscale pub, with leaded windows, dark wood and subtle lighting. Such an attractive space deserves the right menu to do it justice. Chris has entrusted this side of the operation to Andrew Derden, an inventive and committed chef with years of experience in upscale dining. “We lost our first chef to the surprise Christmas gift of his own restaurant,” says Chris. “He took over the lease for something and left suddenly, and we lost a little direction from January to February. I brought in Andrew in early April, and he’s quickly gotten it back on the right track.” For Andrew, the right track means a high-caliber menu, top-quality ingredients and a tightly run kitchen. This attention to detail makes sense when you consider that Andrew’s first experience as a professional cook came in the Navy, where he prepared officers’ meals in the kitchen of an aircraft carrier. Andrew’s first civilian gig was at Fort Worth’s Glade Chop House, and he’s also done stints at Reata, Grace, Brownstone, Stephan Pyles, and Driftwood. “I love to make food, I love to make people happy, and with cooking I can knock out both those things

at once,” says Andrew. “At Common Ground, everything’s fresh now. I get a lot of things from local farms, and I utilize Chef ’s Produce, almost 100 percent of which is non-GMO.” With Andrew’s arrival, Common Ground’s sojourn in the culinary wilderness came to an abrupt end. Patrons can now find upscale dishes of a quality and variety not previously found in the university area. For example, a dinner patron could enjoy a USA wild caught fish presented with a carrot puree, roasted beets, turnip chips and a cilantro gremolata. For an appetizer, you could enjoy a selection of house-made pickled vegetables, or a watermelon salad with cucumber, shaved onion, bleu cheese and dressing. “The approach I want to have for the area is elevated food,” says Andrew. “Here you can get dishes similar to what you’d expect downtown, made with the same ingredients, from the same purveyors — we just don’t charge as much. For the college students, we have a lot of burgers and comforting dishes, and they’re all elevated.” If you haven’t yet tried Common Ground, you’ll want to get in before the rush. Visit them on Facebook to learn about the latest social media specials and promotions. In the near future, this surefire neighborhood favorite plans to host live music Thursday through Saturday. “We strive to appeal not just to the students, but to young professionals and the local crowd,” says Chris Hutchinson. “We welcome everyone, and we know that it’s our neighborhood that will sustain us through the upcoming years.”

eroes come in many forms. Police, doctors and soldiers present a vision of heroism founded on survival, where the struggle to preserve life and thwart death define the pinnacle of their vocation. Other heroes serve through example, with a heroism founded on the ideals they represent through their moral or physical fortitude, or the magnitude of their accomplishments. Professional athletes inspire us with legendary work ethics, commitments to excellence, and the heroism of seemingly superhuman physical feats. We all watch and celebrate their exploits, whether on the baseball diamond or basketball court; what does it feel like, however, when the heroic athlete is your dad? Dillon Gee’s two young children understand this situation better than most. Their father, the Fort Worth native and MLB pitcher, debuted in the majors in 2010 for the New York Mets. Currently with the Kansas City Royals, Dillon Gee’s career has encompassed broad success at the collegiate and professional levels. His proudest accomplishments, however, are those of a father. “I was blessed with an unbelievable dad,” says Dillon. “I just want to teach my kids how to be good people and respect others. I had an excellent role model in that regard, who showed me that the biggest accomplishment is to raise a good person.” Born in Cleburne, Dillon grew up with the example of his father, a fireman with the Fort Worth Fire Department. Dillon’s baseball career began when his first career start as a high school senior resulted in a no-hitter. A second no-hitter followed, and he ended the year as his team’s MVP, with first team all-district and all-state honors. College saw Dillon in attendance at the University of Texas at Arlington, where his efforts helped lift the Mavericks to the 2006 NCAA tournament. Drafted by the New York Mets in 2007, Dillon began his professional career as a member of the Class-A Brooklyn Cyclones. A landmark season came in 2008, when Dillon received a promotion and went 2-0 with the Class-AA Binghamton Mets. Dillon’s Triple-A career began in 2009, 16

West FW Lifestyle | June 2016

and he battled through injury to accumulate a 13-8 record in 2010. This achievement served to punch Dillon’s card to the majors, and he made his debut with the New York Mets on September 7, 2010. His first start signaled great things to come: a no-hitter until the 6th, with only two hits and single run over seven innings. “My profession is tough on my family, we move around a lot and there’s not a lot of stability,” says Dillon. “But I have a short window to take advantage of this opportunity to play Major League Baseball. I want to show my kids that not everything comes easy, and sacrifices can be made to make things better.” Dillon’s career in the majors continued with the Mets in 2011, when he roared to the best start by a Mets rookie pitcher in franchise history. In 2012, Dillon overcame a slow start to pitch a pair of nine strikeout games. Dillon’s personal resolve and penchant for hard work saw him through another season-ending injury, and the 2013 season saw him rise through the ranks of Mets starters. He started opening day in 2014, and was also named a starter for the 2015 season. Dillon elected for free agency in 2015, and signed with the Kansas City Royals a couple months later. Through the ups-and-downs of his career, which has involved multiple relocations as he moved between teams, Dillon has kept one thing central in his resolve: dedication to his family, and a commitment to make the most of his opportunities. “Before I had kids, I overvalued my job. I took it home with me, and it weighed on me a lot,” says Dillon. “After having a kid, a bad game is no longer the end of the world. I come home to my beautiful children and wife, and that’s taught me the importance of what’s great in life.” Primed for additional success, Dillon plans to make the most of his time with the Royals. Success as a major leaguer never comes easily; but Dillon has plenty of fuel for inspiration. “I want my kids to say that dad worked extremely hard to provide for us, and I want to instill those values in them,” says Dillon. “Worthwhile things never come easily, and you have to put forth the time and effort.”

ather’s Day can present an annual conundrum to mothers, sons and daughters. We all love our dads, and strive to express this through displays of affection and appreciation. The crowning accoutrement of Father’s Day, the gift, presents a special problem, however: most men — especially dads, whose hobbies take a backseat to work and family — are astonishingly difficult to buy for. Because of this, Father’s Day gifts can sometimes appear as an afterthought. The holiday has a tendency to take people by surprise, and dad gets stuck with another colorful tie, or an ironic coffee mug. Surprisingly enough, the history of the holiday itself shares something of this “afterthought” character. The first informal Father’s Day celebrations — one in West Virginia in 1908, and another in Washington in 1910 — were inspired by the widespread success of Mother’s Day. An event to celebrate moms had gained popularity throughout the 19th century, and Mother’s Day became an official national holiday in 1914. To the chagrin of dads everywhere, Father’s Day would have to wait another 58 years for its bonafides: not until 1972 would the day get signed into law and made official. In the decades since, however, Father’s Day has entered the national conscience to become a commercial juggernaut. As this Father’s Day approaches, wives and children will make the trek to the mall or

outdoor living superstore, and likely settle for another tool, equipment upgrade, or a catch-all gift card. This year, do yourself a favor and check out what Gunn&Hook has to offer. Much more than just a store, Gunn&Hook exemplifies the outdoor, active lifestyle in a way few other companies can. Travel agency, retail store and one-stop source for all things hunting and fishing, Gunn&Hook takes the worry out of Father’s Day — and puts a guaranteed smile on dad’s face. “We’re essentially a home-away company, but for the hunting and fishing space,” says co-founder Kevin McConnell. “We’re a place where you connect sportsmen with guides and outfitters in a totally transparent setting, and help them book trips together.” Chances are, the fathers in your life have received their fair share of gifts. From pocketknives and firearms, to ties, hats and golf clubs, closets can become stuffed with the erstwhile presents from Father’s Days past. Instead of another “thing” that will grant, perhaps, a momentary smile, why not give dad something unforgettable? On the topic of popular experiences, Kevin recounts a litany of adventures: “Elk hunting here in Texas, Florida fishing, redfish trips, seasonal dove hunts, helicopter boar hunts, some upland game hunts, turkey and bass fishing,” says Kevin. “This time of year, we see a big bump for dads and grads.” As an outdoor experience travel agency, Gunn&Hook works in a way similar to Air BnB. Customers visit the website and browse through an expansive list of adventure offerings. You can browse trips based on dad’s hobby — whether it’s hunting, fishing, shooting, or adventure sports — or preferred destination. If you know that the special father in your life has long dreamed of an adventure in the Alaskan wilderness, or wilds of Africa, Gunn&Hook can help you arrange the ideal trip. The service works through connecting customers directly to the guides and outfitters who will lead the excursion. Customers can read reviews and consider ratings, and rely upon the oversight of fellow adventurers to ensure a satisfactory experience. “We’ve identified our top 72 spots, with 36 hunting and 36 fishing destinations,” says Gunn&Hook co-founder Jay Decker. “We’ve targeted five to six outfitters for each, and provide a fully transparent experience for the customer. If you want to book a trip, you can visit the website and read ratings and reviews about the specific ones you want to do. We offer everything from 5-star experiences to more affordable trips, and have something for everyone.”

HOOKED ON THE OUTDOOR LIFE (CON TI N U ED)

“If you want to book a trip, you can visit the website and read

ratings and reviews about the specific ones you want to do. We

offer everything from 5-star experiences to more affordable trips, and have something for everyone.”

If you want to give your dad something truly special, but don’t want to commit him to a lengthy vacation, Gunn&Hook has plenty of convenient, one-day options. The range of shorter trips in and around the Metroplex includes everything from a full-day of fishing with an expert guide for $395, to a two-hour helicopter hog hunt for $3,000. If you want something more extravagant — the kind of gift that will permanently settle the “favorite child” debate — Gunn&Hook has lengthy and immersive offerings at exotic locations around the world. For example, recent political changes have made it possible to experience the culture and beauty of Cuba. What better way to celebrate this historic event, than with a seven-day mothership fishing experience in Los Jardines de la Reina. This particular trip, which is just one of dozens of spectacular examples, includes seven nights of lodging and meals aboard the mothership itself, La Tortuga, and an additional two days in Havana. Additional deluxe options include multi-day African safaris, along with endorsed conservancy hunts. If a Father’s Day trip feels a bit ambitious, never fear: Gunn&Hook also has a retail store, located at 1013 Foch St., full of high-quality gear.

Make Dad TEXCELLENT this Father’s Day

“On the gear side, every dad wants more Yeti stuff,” says Kevin. “They’ve got some new products out this spring and summer, new colors and new items. You can also buy your dad a pair of Costa sunglasses, or a GoPro camera.” The 900-square-foot retail space supplements a web store, and you can browse an extensive online inventory of gifts and trips at www. gunnhook.com. Best of all, your ideal Father’s Day gift will go to support a homegrown Fort Worth business. “Though our coverage is now worldwide, we’re a Fort Worth born and bred company,” says Kevin. “We had humble beginnings, and the business has grown 500 percent year over year. he craft beer movement means different things to different people. For the public, it widens the availability of complex, specialty brews that challenge assumptions about beer’s taste and character. For beer-lovers, it has resulted in a golden age of small breweries, each with their own unique approach, history and offerings. For brewers themselves, what in previous years would be relegated to a passion project can now become a livelihood. Mainstays like Houston’s Saint Arnold Brewing Co. have charted the course, and the breweries that follow continue to break new ground. Wild Acre Brewing Co. represents a new vanguard among craft brewers. Headquartered near downtown Fort Worth in the historic Ranch Style Beans facility, Wild Acre Brewing Co. emerged from the inspiration of founder John Pritchett. A veteran of beverage distribution, Pritchett has brought to bear an extensive skill-set and attention to detail that beer-lovers everywhere can soon appreciate. 22

“I was with Ben E. Keith for 18 years, which distributes Budweiser in the Dallas-Fort Worth area,” says Pritchett. “They began to acquire distributorships that sold a lot of different craft beers. I saw their growth and became a fan of the products themselves.” Visits to breweries in Colorado and California inspired John to start a similar venture in Fort Worth. His background gave him an insider’s acumen in regards to distribution; but first he had to create a stellar product. Behind every great brewery is a master brewer, and Pritchett found Wild Acre’s in the figure of Mike Kraft. With 20 years of experience in the industry, Kraft brings a level of expertise not typically found in independent breweries. With his brewmaster in place, Pritchett was ready to get to work. “Under Mike’s direction, we bought a pilot brewing system in May of 2015,” says Pritchett. “We started in his garage and then

moved into our facility once we got the lease. We’ve worked on refining the recipes ever since.” Rather than rely on the preferences of one individual, Pritchett and Kraft worked collaboratively with Wild Acre’s director of sales, John Healy, to decide which beers to create for the market. For its launch, Wild Acre plans to have four beers available in cans and on draft. The Moonlight Shine, a wheat ale, is perfect for a summer afternoon, with notes of vanilla and orange zest. The well-balanced Billy Jenkins Session Bock encourages drinkability, and warms the palate with toffee undertones. Drinkers who want a truly original flavor can try the Tarantula Hawk, a red IPA with flavors of grapefruit and pine. Stout lovers can get their fix with Soul Pleasure, which benefits from the complexity of seven different premium malts. “We should begin our first batches for commercial sale in early May, and plan to sell in June,” says Pritchett. “We’re 98 percent through with construction, and are just tying up the last loose ends.” As for what differentiates Wild Acre from other craft breweries, Pritchett cites exceptional quality control, attention to detail and a willingness to invest. “We are putting a lot of quality into the product from the get-go,” says Pritchett. “To make a good, consistent beer, you need worldclass equipment. We stretched ourselves financially to buy great equipment with the best technology.” A lot of Wild Acre’s investment has gone into its laboratory. Pritchett and his team have the know-how and means to assess the quality of their product on a level normally only seen in large breweries. “The things that big breweries do to ensure that products remain exceptional and consistent, we’ll be doing that from the start,” says Pritchett. “We’ve also put a lot of work into the facility, in order to give our guests a brand experience.” The Wild Acre experience will include a dedicated taproom open to the public, along with a beer garden where visitors can come and enjoy the verdant property just a mile from downtown. “It’s a 20-acre property, and the whole multi-tenant fence-line was formerly the manufacturing facility for Ranch Style Beans,” says Pritchett. “For many years, as you were driving into Fort Worth, you’d see this big black tower that said ‘Ranch Style.’” Though the tower no longer exists, the old facility will soon become linked with another iconic, Texas-based company. Wild Acre, a label that denotes excellence, will represent the finest that Fort Worth brewing has to offer.

“We are putting a lot of quality into the product from the get-go,” says Pritchett. “To make a good, consistent beer, you need world-class equipment. We stretched ourselves financially to buy great equipment with the best technology.”

ome builders work to bring clients’ dreams into the light of day. As someone who gets entrusted with one of life’s most important investments, a builder must negotiate the demands of reality against a client’s wishes and needs. Anyone who has struggled to manage a major remodel or building project can respect the indispensability of a skilled construction company. As project manager, consultant, confidants and taskmasters, the best builders offer an unimpeachable level of craftsmanship and dependability. Over four decades, Fort Worth residents have been able to turn to Bettis Construction for just such an impeccable degree of service. As a veteran of the industry, Bill Bettis has done it all in regards to residential construction. As he continues to build his business and serve his clientele, he can count on the support of a dedicated team: one that now includes his son. What has grown into a family business started out small. In the beginning, Bill Bettis didn’t build homes — he repaired them. “After the military, I moved to Fort Worth to earn my fame and fortune,” jokes Bill. “I was fortunate enough to fall into business in Westover Hills and Rivercrest, around the vintage homes. There’s where we found our niche, and we started with basic home repairs. One thing led to another, and we began to take on the whole package.” The whole package now includes everything from new custom homes built from the ground up, large and small-scale renovations, and kitchen and bath construction. Bill has developed relationships with world-class designers and architects to ensure that clients’ visions become accurately represented. His trust in a group of select subcontractors and suppliers has deepened over the years, so that Bill can faithfully bet the Bettis Construction name on the quality of his team’s work. Throughout the process, Bill maintains personal oversight. This level of personal commitment and expertise has won Bill the gratitude of clients — and continues to win him business.

“Ninety-nine percent of our business comea from word-of-mouth or personal referrals,” says Bill. “We’ve been fortunate to have an unbelievable clientele. We only work with a limited number of contractors and have developed those relationships over years. Our clients see that and appreciate the talent we bring to the table.” Forty years is a long time to spend in an industry. To have dedicated that time to a single community has granted Bill an uncommon understanding of how to best serve the needs of west Fort Worth clients. Whether it’s connections to the best designers in town, or insights into building trends, Bill serves as a fount of expertise. “People love the old neighborhoods,” says Bill. “There’s a great trend for staying in Monticello, Rivercrest or Westover, and a lot of the houses in those areas are so outdated that the best use is to clear the lot. That’s not the case for all of them, though, and the character of some of those homes makes it worth keeping the facades.” Among the trends that Bill has identified are improvements to a home’s energy efficiency, updated lighting designs, and an emphasis on creature comforts such as heated floors and outdoor kitchens. A significant part of Bettis Construction’s recent business has come from the development of acreage. Families who want the country living experience will hire Bill and his team to renovate or construct traditionally rustic Texas ranch homes. Though Bettis Construction does no design work itself, it can help clients set budgets, define needs, and connect with architects and designers.

“The first stage of every project we do is providing a concept of the budget,” says Bill. “We’ve done this for 40 years, so we have a pretty good handle on what things will cost.” For the next 40 years, Bill can count on the help of his son. Andrew Bettis has been around his dad’s construction business for his entire life. After graduating from Texas State in 2009 with a degree in finance, he joined the family business. “His attitude is well suited for the business and he likes the work,” says Bill. His personality complements mine. He brings social skills to the company, where I’m sometimes a little rough behind the collar. It’s an incredible privilege to have your son working with you.”

The One That

ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK

veryone knows that losing weight is hard. Aside from counting calories and exercise, someone who wants to lose weight must

commit himself to an entirely new way of life. For anyone who has struggled to keep the pounds off, it can feel as if nature fights against hard-won gains. Studies have shown that in some cases, metabolism does actually slow after weight loss, as the body struggles to replace lost weight. When nature itself undermines weight loss, it’s easy to feel defeated. Many people, including Fort Worth native Charlie Geren of the Texas House of Representatives, need a little help. Representative Geren found the assistance he needed at the Medi-Weightloss Clinic, which offers a physician-supervised weight loss program. Representative Geren was gracious enough to share with us his success in the program.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO PURSUE A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE? GEREN: The reason I decide to pursue a healthier lifestyle is because

I was fat. My clothes were too tight. A friend of mine from Waco who served in the legislature went through the program, so I decided to try it. This is my third time, and I’m very comfortable with it and know that it works. Unfortunately, I’ve never stuck with the follow-up program, but I will this time. FOR SOMEONE WHO KNOWS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT THE PROGRAM, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT? GEREN: It’s basically no carbs for the first week, just small portions of pro-

tein and cheese. I call it hell week. After that you eat healthy vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats. Once a week you go in for a check-up, and they can give you a B-12 complex shot to keep your energy up. It lasts as long as you want it to, and so far I’ve lost 22 pounds in four weeks. They’re really great people to work with, and offer a lot of encouragement. HOW DOES YOUR RESTAURANT (RAILHEAD SMOKEHOUSE) FACTOR INTO THE PROGRAM? GEREN: Well, being in the BBQ business, there are a lot of different meats

I can eat. Today I’ll have either turkey or chicken, jalapeños and a pickle for lunch. I usually save my beef for an evening meal, and tonight I’ll have a steak and some artichoke hearts. It’s also important to drink a lot of water while you’re on the program. Through a combination of weekly visits — which involve body composition analyses and check-ups — and nutrition education, 26

GIVING BACK ALZHEIMER’S GALA CELEBRATES CHAPTER’S LARGEST RESEARCH GIFT ARTICLE ELIZABETH SEHON HARRIS

A

colorful display of purple illuminated the Hurst Conference Center from gowns to bow ties as the community’s generosity overflowed at the Alzheimer’s Association - North Central Texas Chapter’s annual Memory Gala April 29 - along with an announcement of the chapter’s largest financial gift to date. Meharvan “Sonny” Singh, PhD, the chapter’s board chair and dean of the graduate school of biomedical sciences for University of North Texas Health Science Center, announced to the audience of more than 450 attendees, that the chapter donated $500,000 to five new investigator research grants. This is the largest financial donation gifted by the chapter, which will help fund Alzheimer’s researchers who have started their careers to advance innovations and support those dealing with the disease. “I want to make sure these young researchers stay in the pipeline because after I retire, I want to make sure someone else continues the fight,” Singh said. Two of the five research grants are located in Texas, including Ines Moreno-Gonzalez, PhD, who will be studying the risk of developing the disease after brain trauma, such as a concussion. Gonzalez and her colleagues will be using an imaging technique called positron emission tomography (PET) to visualize brains that have experienced mild or severe traumatic brain injury. 28

West FW Lifestyle | June 2016

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease is the only illness among the top 10 causes of death in America that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. Currently 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, which kills more people than prostate and breast cancer combined. The chapter’s goal for the gala was to offer an unforgettable experience as attendees were asked to support the various programs and services offered in North Central Texas, as well as research initiatives needed to end the disease. Theresa Hocker, CEO for the Alzheimer’s Association - North Central Texas Chapter, said a great deal of work went into organizing and creating the 15th annual gala. “It’s so important to be in front of people who are committed to helping with what we’re trying to achieve, which is funding research and being a local resource to those dealing with this disease,” she said. Hocker said the chapter’s research gift was significant in the role of finding a cure for the disease. “When you give funding to these researchers, you never know who will come up with the latest advancement,” she said. “That’s why it’s so important.” At press time, more than $330,000 had been raised from the gala.

Chris Lokey, board member for the chapter, attended the event and has a personal tie with the disease – his wife died of Alzheimer’s. Lokey said the staff members and volunteers at the local chapter helped guide him and his wife with the important, yet difficult decisions with the disease. “We learned a lot from them (the North Central Texas Chapter) during my wife’s disease and I have to make sure this organization does well to help others like I was helped,” he said. “We want to keep young and excited people in this field, so funding these researchers is an important cause.” The gala was co-chaired by Valerie Holloway Skinner and Athena Wiginton, and held a silent and live auction that included a private five-course dinner and entertainment with Fort Worth chef Lou Lambert, which auctioned for $15,000. Pam Minick was the emcee for the evening, which included a Q&A with Sid O’Bryant, PhD, researcher for UNTHSC and informed the attendees about the most recent health facts of the disease. Towards the end of the event, Singh spoke again about the importance of finding a cure and funding for new advancements for the disease, which is now considered an epidemic. “We can't stop now,” Singh said. “We must keep fighting.” The Alzheimer’s Association - North Central Texas Chapter is affiliated with the national Alzheimer's Association, headquartered in Chicago. Fort Worth serves as headquarters for the chapter, which has regional offices in Abilene, Waco and Wichita Falls. The chapter is a nonprofit, donor-supported organization and

the programs and services are made possible through contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations. For more information on the chapter and/or to donate please visit:

Parting Thoughts

STUFF HAPPENS ON DAD’S WATCH

DENISE SNODELL

C

all me either sexist or a keen observer, but I have a notion to blurt: When men are solo supervisors of kids, dust is more likely fly off the first aid kit. This is neither good nor bad. There isn’t enough room here to share all evidence of this Fiasco Theory. But here’s an anecdotal glimpse, from my life, of what tends to happen when manhood goes eye to eye with childhood.

No mother wants to hear this about her teen, especially crackling through a phone line in the middle of the night. My husband took our boys on a little ski trip--their first one. The disaster happened on a more “advanced” slope of a rather bunny-ish place. It seemed the weather had turned the “snow” into an ice-coated crash course. Long story short, it was a bad break. Mom wasn’t there. Dad was.

THE HISTORY

MISCELLANEOUS

My grandparents raised six children during the Great Depression. Grandma was full of pep. I always gathered, from stories, she needed frequent escape hatches. Botanical garden visits. Part-time work. Perhaps a walk around the block for a private scream. According to legend, when grandpa took over, there would be frequent kid-related debacles. Grandma was known to say, “Things happen when dads are in charge.” Like a family heirloom, my mother has handed down this line to me. It’s quilted with subtext. Namely, the word “things” smells like an ace bandage.

My sons have had blisters, tick bites, bad sunburns on the edges of their ears and the worst junk food ever to pass their lips. Never on my watch. Then there’s poison ivy. It’s everywhere, even in our own yard. I frequently point it out. It remains untouched. But let me tell you: A kid might get a decent urushiol rash on his face while f loating on a body of water. It turns out a father/son canoe can slide under a fallen log that happens to have dangling leaves of three. Who knew?

THE BEACH

WHAT ALL OF THIS MEANS

I grew up near the ocean. When I was 7, my father and uncle took me and my two brothers to the beach. My older brother and I were building a sand castle when we noticed a gathering of agitated adults. Our 3-year-old brother was missing! The lifeguard instructed us that lost kids usually walk with their backs to the sun. (Take note on that golden info nugget.) A search posse exploded across the shore. What seemed like a lifetime later, somebody found my brother. To this day, I can never relax when I sit on sand, yet my kids are grown. The 3am Call. “He broke his leg.”

There are two sides to every band aid…the smooth and the sticky. I’m generalizing here, but what I’m saying is moms tend to visualize, in HDTV clarity, the worst physical outcomes. We anticipate danger, whereas the fathers I know see adventure. Perhaps when men are with children, they want to show kids how to LIVE WITH CONFIDENCE, how to barrel ahead and explore. They want to show youngsters what ice packs are for. Men help strike a perfect balance on how to approach the world. Things happen when dads are in charge, indeed. And (most of the time) these things are magical. Happy Father’s Day.
