In the Good Ole Summertime
I
currently have 100 GIANT Pop Ice frozen snacks in my freezer. This is in preparation for summer in my household. I also have 6 dozen one-pint ice cream containers waiting for Mike to utilize his Christmas present, an ice cream maker. We are officially summer ready, with the possible exception of our bikini bodies. I have to confess something, I don’t own a grill of any kind and have possibly worked a grill twice in my life. That was always my dad’s territory. In fact, I am extremely intimidated by the open flame concept, I am confused by the propane and starter and don’t even get me started on charcoal. Oh well, I guess at 46 I will just sit back with a nice cold glass of iced tea and swat mosquitos and accept my limitations while someone makes me a nice medium tenderloin. July seems to be vacation month in this wonderful town of ours, but if you don’t get a chance to leave you still have the wonderful opportunity to explore Fort Worth. Spend a lazy Saturday afternoon in the Near Southside area at Grand Cru sipping chilled Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc or stroll through the stockyards and grab lunch at H3. You can rediscover Where the West Begins all summer long.

t some point in the nighttime hours of February 28th, tragedy struck the home of Keri and Larry Volmert. The heating system on the second story of the couple’s home malfunctioned, raising the temperature in the room of 17-month-old daughter Sammie. When Larry rose the next morning and went to check on his daughter, a wave of heat greeted him at the top of the stairs. “The entire upstairs had heated to over 100 degrees,” says Keri. “Sammie died of hyperthermia. We called 911, attempted CPR, but 12

there was never a pulse and they weren’t able to revive her at all. We think she had been gone for some time in the night.” What makes this tragedy particularly painful is that the Volmerts, like all loving parents, had taken all normal precautions for the care of their children. Nothing unusual sounded over the baby monitor, and the first floor’s separate HVAC system — a common feature of two-story homes — functioned as normal. As the temperature soared in Sammie’s room, her parents had no way of
knowing. If nothing else, the death of the bright and bubbly toddler will inspire change in this regard. In remembrance of their child, and as a way to prevent this tragedy from striking others, the Volmerts have begun a mission to raise awareness about the dangers of faulty heating systems. “People don’t realize that this can happen,” says Keri. “As far as we know, Sammie was the third child who died under similar circumstances. Since we shared our story, we’ve been bombarded with stories from parents
who found their children in the nick of time. People have described finding the child turned blue, and having to throw them in the bathtub; or entering the child’s room to find it 90 degrees, with the heat blasting.” On April 26th, Keri created a Facebook page — www.facebook. com/sammiejoycevolmert/ — for remembrance of Sammie. Keri’s initial post on the page, a heartbreakingly tender and evocative portrayal of the circumstances of Sammie’s death, has been shared over 20,000 times. The page itself has over 10,000 followers, and for the first time, many mothers and fathers have become aware of the hidden dangers in their home heating systems. “Our daughter was a year-and-a-half old,” says Keri. “Kids are more susceptible to hyperthermia and heat until they are three to five years old, since they can’t regulate their body temperatures like adults. They also won’t always wake up when it gets too hot.” As chance would have it, the Volmert’s three-year-old son slept in his parents’ bedroom the night of the malfunction. If he had been in his own room, he most likely would have perished as well, despite his older age. “It’s important for people to monitor the temperature of their children’s rooms, and not just when they’re babies,” says Keri. “People use things early on, when they’re worried about SIDs, but most parents aren’t using the monitoring tools they need later on.” To supplement their awareness efforts, the Volmerts have begun the process to create a charity that will provide inexpensive CONTINUED >

temperature monitors for families with separate HVAC systems. While many baby monitors provide a digital read-out of the room’s temperature, they do nothing to indicate when the temperature fluctuates to dangerous levels. As a way to safeguard your children, Keri recommends monitors that will actually sound alerts in the event of an HVAC malfunction. “As far as I know, there are two baby monitors that give off an actual alarm when temperatures go too high,” says Keri. “There really aren’t very many, and we’re trying to develop one that is solely for temperature. It will be something parents can use beyond a baby monitor, that can plug into the wall and emit a loud siren.” Until a standalone device becomes available, Keri recommends the Lorex Sweet Peep. This video baby monitor, available for sale on www.amazon.com, offers night vision and room temperature alerts. If you’d like to support the Volmerts’ drive to raise awareness, make sure to ‘like’ and follow their Facebook page. As the temperature alarm charity gets off the ground, updates and opportunities for support will get added. In the meantime, visit The Little Ladybug on Etsy (www.etsy.com/shop/thelittleladybugacc) to shop a line of children’s hair accessories created to benefit the Volmerts’ efforts.
“It’s important for people to monitor the temperature of their children’s rooms, and not just when they’re babies,” says Keri.

GUILT-FREE SUMMER Enjoy everything that summer offers -- from BBQs to pool parties -with healthy tips from Medi-Weightloss. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK
F
or a season associated with carefree fun, summer, ironically enough, comes loaded with worries and concerns. Whether it’s anxiety over summer travel, a hectic social calendar or the demands of a housebound child, we’ve all experienced the unique demands of this most “relaxed” of seasons. For many people, getting their swimsuit figures provides an annual source of frustration. As if losing winter weight wasn’t enough, summer itself presents myriad temptations in the form of BBQs, vacation splurges, and eating out with the kiddos. To get some tips for healthy seasonal eating — and a couple all-star recipes for your next BBQ — we talked to Jana Howell of Medi-Weightloss, the physician-supervised program that encourages healthy habits. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE STRUGGLES THAT SUMMER PRESENTS FOR WEIGHT-LOSS AND HEALTHY EATING? JANA: Vacations are a big struggle for many people, as they’re synon-
ymous with food indulgences. People also like the fruity, summery beverages, which are high in sugar and calories. Overall, the biggest hurdle of summer is that we eat and drink differently. You're around your kids more and eating fun food with them. Part of what we do at Medi-Weightloss is provide alternative ideas to what you can order when you’re at restaurants, or what low-sugar drinks to have by the pool. WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF HEALTHY CHOICES THAT PEOPLE CAN MAKE WITHIN THEIR NORMAL SUMMER ROUTINES?
Kids always want to eat out, and fast food becomes an easy answer. Most places offer salads that are healthy so long as you’re JANA:
16

mindful of the dressing and extras. Kids love Chick-Fil-A, and they offer grilled chicken nuggets. As far as drinking, sometimes the really pretty fruity drinks are full of calories and carbs. Use a non-caloric sweetener, like Crystal Light, or fresh-squeezed juices in small amounts. A vodka soda with lime is just 90 calories and zero carbs. As for cooking at home or entertaining friends, one of the best things about the summer is that you can grill. If you’re grilling on the weekend, avoid sugary marinades and grill extras for the week. Also, remember to get active and take full advantage of the outdoors while it’s not too hot. Fort Worth has many things to do along the river, like the biking and walking trails. There are also a lot of indoor exercise options, such as Orange Theory, Pilates, and yoga. Make summer the time of year where you try them all and see which is the best fit. WHAT ARE SOME SPECIFIC STRATEGIES FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO ENJOY THE BBQ, BUT ALSO WATCH THEIR WEIGHT?
Take advantage of summer fruits and vegetables, and bring your own food and drinks to share with others. For example, if the host is providing meat, then you can bring a fruit salad or vegetables to grill, or other low-carb sides such as tomatoes with balsamic vinegar and basil. Make sure to also bring your own drinks, and carry a cooler of low-calorie mixers or low-carb beer. When it comes to meats, the leaner the cut, the fewer calories. You can mix it up, too: shrimp on the grill is fantastic. Remember, JANA:
40-60% OFF in-stock rugs
if you stick with leaner meats, you can have a bigger portion. Four ounces of chicken is 140 calories, whereas the same amount of steak contains 300 calories. Portabella mushrooms work great on the grill, and fruit for dessert is always a good choice.

Trinity River Vision Authority has an action-packed slate of summer activities centered on Panther Island Pavilion.
R
egardless of your age, the word “summer” never loses its luster. As children, we look forward to the end of the school year and what feels like an eternity of freedom. The child who enters summer is never quite the same that steps forth again into fall. Young lives get measured in the subsequent milestones of summer breaks, with all their adventures, irreplaceable experiences, and endowed liberty. Of course, that’s the idea. In reality, many kids spend summer prepping for the next school year, while parents can dread the onset of June and its requirements for sitters or daily activities. Despite this, summer can still feel perfect in small moments: an afternoon at the zoo, or a lazy Saturday in the backyard; a matinee blockbuster, followed by a stop for ice cream; or a day spent at the river or lake, with good friends and fun on the water. Those of us who live in Fort Worth associate this last image especially closely with summer — after all, we have the Trinity River and its expansive lake system right in our backyards. For years, the Trinity River Vision Authority has sought to develop the river as a premier destination for summertime entertainment. As July signals the full onset of the season — and its heat — you can thank TRVA for a full complement of reasons to cool off, enjoy the outdoors, and reacquaint yourself with the Trinity. Many of Fort Worth’s biggest summer events are centered around Panther Island, the TRVA’s waterfront development project located just north of downtown. Shanna Cate, the programming and development manager for TRVA, explains the organization’s goals and efforts along the Trinity: “The TRVA was basically created to oversee the construction and implementation of Panther Island. On the one hand, we focus on the construction of infrastructure to allow for waterfront development; on the other, we oversee any private development that comes into the district. We also do community outreach and seek to engage people with programming and events.”
The most visible of these efforts — literally — is TRVA’s Fort Worth’s Fourth, which is the city’s single largest one-day event. Last year, Fort Worth’s Fourth attracted 70,000 attendees, all of whom were invited to enjoy the event’s programming, entertainment and fireworks free-ofcharge. The event’s fireworks show has become a hallmark attraction, as it lights up the skies over downtown and the Trinity River with North Texas’s largest pyrotechnic display. This year, the TRVA welcomes everyone to view the show from within the festival grounds. “The biggest thing we want to encourage this year is to go ahead and come into the festival grounds,” says Shanna. “We have some effects planned that will make it very special for people who are actually inside the festival’s perimeter.” In addition to free admission, Fort Worth’s Fourth attendees can take advantage of free kids activities such as face painting, horseback riding, bounce houses and water slides. The adults can enjoy drinks from the festival bar, food vendors, and live music from Gary P. Nunn. Other performances include a flyover from the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base’s 301st Fighter Wing and an evening concert from high-energy cover band Party Machine. This year’s VIP options, available with purchase of a $40 ticket, include a private shaded area
with bar, bathrooms, and fireworks viewing from the festival’s grandstand. The VIP tickets promise to sell out, so if you’d like this deluxe experience, make sure to buy in advance. Tickets and general event information are available online at www.fortworthsfourth.com. The size and scope of Fort Worth’s Fourth would make it forgivable if TRVA took the rest of the summer off. The organization and its dedicated team works hard so Fort Worth can play hard, however, and the rest of the summer comes jam-packed with reasons to visit Panther Island. “Our big summer series is called Rockin’ the River,” says Shanna. “It’s a Thursday night tubing and music series that starts on June 16th and runs for nine weeks. Each night is free admission, and you can rent a tube or bring your own to watch the band on the waterfront stage.” If you don’t want to get in the water, you’re welcome to bring a chair or blanket and stretch out on the bank. Once the sun goes down, everyone leaves the water before a second act plays on shore. Each Thursday’s festivities get capped with a fireworks show, and featured bands for 2016 will include the Damn Quails, Zane Williams, the Dirty River Boys and Cooder Graw. If the Rockin’ the River series provides the perfect kick-off for a summer weekend, TRVA’s Sunday Funday programs offer an ideal capstone. This free family event kicks off on June 12th, and attendees can enjoy fun in the water, food trucks, music, and a variety of scheduled activities. Backwoods Paddle Sports offers kayaks, tubes, paddle-boards and pedal-boat rentals, while Panther Island Brewing will serve up hometown brews. If you’d like to get centered in preparation for the workweek, Indigo Yoga offers waterfront yoga at the Panther Island Pavilion. “Sunday Funday is catered toward families and is totally free,” says Shanna. “People can come out and play in the water, or join one of several groups that meet in the morning. People will get together to fish off their kayaks, and we’ll also have a disc golf during the series.” CONTINUED >

SUMMER ON THE TRINITY (CON TI N U ED)
If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds, but still want to enjoy some fun, water-centric activities, Backwoods Paddle Sports has you covered. Its rental service, located at Panther Island Pavilion, is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9AM to 7PM. Patrons can hop in a kayak or share a canoe, and explore the calm, tranquil waters of the Trinity up the Clear or West Forks. Even for longtime residents, this experience promises to reveal Fort Worth in a whole new light. As with all of the TRVA’s efforts, the summer schedule and regular activities at Panther Island Pavilion seek to benefit and promote the city as a whole. The Trinity River has historically been a lifeline for Fort Worth; and now, thanks to the efforts of the TRVA, it promises to chart the journey toward a whole new chapter in the city’s development. “Our goal is to cultivate the active, outdoor lifestyle, and make people aware of the river and its recreational potential,” says Shanna. “It’s critical for the growth of Fort Worth to attract people who want to live, work and play in an urban community. When you support Panther Island, you help cultivate this demographic and grow our city.”

Most gardeners, especially those who emphasize the ornamental, can attest to the satisfaction of getting everything “just so,” if only briefly. In Texas, our climate presents unique challenges and thrills for the home horticulturist. With dedication and hard work, one can get practically anything to grow; but keeping it alive is a whole other story. Because of this, a true showpiece Texas garden is worthy of even more respect and admiration. These testaments to a home gardener’s dedication can brighten an entire neighborhood, and render benefits that extend far beyond the boundaries of one yard. Residents of Ridglea Hills can appreciate one such garden at the home of Jenn Kautsch. What began five years ago has grown — with the help of guidance from Archie’s Gardenland — into a stunning presentation of perennial beauty. “I grew up with a mom who gardened,” says Jenn. “We lived on two acres and always had a ton of gardening projects. It wasn’t my thing until I moved to Ridglea Hills near Archie’s, though. Now I have the time and space, and people can actually see my yard.” Armed only with her experience from childhood, this mother and independent consultant for DoTerra essential oils dove headfirst

into a home gardening project that grew by leaps and bounds. Her approach can serve as an example for others; her colorful, verdant results, on the other hand, can stand as inspiration. “Everytime I went in to Archie’s, I was able to work project by project based on their suggestions,” says Jenn. “Basically, I would go in with a flowerbed picture and tell them how the sun was there, or the soil, or whatever I thought they needed to know.” Jenn implemented this strategy repeatedly across small areas, until she finally encompassed the whole of her garden space. Drives around the neighborhood provided additional inspiration, and a neighbor also helped with advice and pointers. Through it all, whenever Jenn encountered a problematic area or needed guidance, she could turn to the homegrown experts at Archie’s. “It was really helpful to bring in pictures and say, ‘I’m not trying to do my whole yard, just this one spot,’” says Jenn. “They helped me bed by bed, picture by picture. What worked has really worked, and come back year after year.” Establishing a showstopper garden in Texas is much like building a house. To get the foundation and frame constructed requires a lot of labor and general expertise. The gardener must choose an ideal spot that receives plenty — but not too much — sunshine, then ensure that the ground is level and prep the soil.
Next come the supply lines: plumbing, electrical and HVAC in the case of a home; gardeners must decide whether to irrigate, erect fencing, or install raised beds. Though these steps represent the heavy labor, any homeowner — or gardener — knows that the real difficulties come from the finishing details. How to decorate, or what to plant and how. “There were a lot of challenges over the years,” says Jenn. “Lots of things I planted got pulled up, or we had a sun or soil issue and had to move something. We definitely had some bug issues, and some epic fails like, ‘Wow, that just shriveled up and died. Note to self: don’t do that again.’ Through it all, we’d go into Archie’s with a picture and ask ‘Now what? What do I do?’” A readiness to accept advice allowed Jenn to overcome every challenge that the weather, climate and insects could throw at her. Though she doesn’t consider herself a master gardener, her outdoor space certainly befits the efforts of a professional. The satisfaction of doing the work herself has made the garden a source of personal pride and contentment. “Between the back patio and front yard, our garden brings me so much happiness,” says Jenn. “To create a beautiful space just lifts everything, and when people walk by and comment it brings me so much joy. It’s kinda the gift that keeps on giving. Every morning I wake up and am just reminded that life isn’t always new and beautiful, but my garden is.”

2016 TESLA MODEL 3
Base Price: $35,000 EPA Range: 215 miles per charge Est. tax credit: $7,500 Body Type: Sedan
MUSK'S STATE OF THE ART AFFORDABLE, ELECTRIC CAR IS FINALLY HERE ARTICLE DONALD HAWKINS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF TESLA MOTORS
I
n 2006, Elon Musk published a blog post outlining his longterm vision for Tesla. At the time, Tesla was still two years away from delivering the first Roadster, the company’s first product.
The strategy of Tesla is to enter at the high end of the market, where customers are prepared to pay a premium,” Musk said. “Then, we’ll drive down market as fast as possible to higher unit volume and lower prices with each successive model. The base-level Tesla Model 3 will come standard with a rear-mounted single motor capable of launching the car from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in about six seconds. A high-performance dual-motor AWD configuration will also be offered, though Tesla has offered little in the way of performance stats for the car. Journalists who were offered the opportunity to ride in the car reported a high-performance feel that would be familiar to anyone who has been in a Tesla. Tesla announced the driving range in the Model 3 to be “at least 215 miles.” Achieving a 215-mile range will require a pack, most likely, of about 50 kilowatt-hours. Some analysts believe that Tesla is already approaching a cost of $200 per kWh, which would put the Model 3’s pack at around $10,000. Tesla’s long-term goal is to use mass production at its Nevada-based factory to bring the cost well below this level. 24

Seats: 5 Features: Autopilot Hardware, Supercharging
A 240-volt Tesla home charging station costs $750, not including installation. We expect the Model 3 to use an on-board 10 kW charger, like its sibling vehicles. This means owners can add 30 or more miles of range for every hour of charging at home. With its sizable battery pack providing more than 200 miles of driving range—and the average commuter traveling about 40 miles per day—most drivers will find they have plenty of energy reserves on a daily basis. In terms of longer distance highway trips, Tesla offers its current vehicle owners free access to around 400 Supercharger sites in the United States. These high-speed fast-chargers are capable of bringing a Model S battery pack to 80 percent of capacity in about 40 minutes. This opens up new possibilities for interstate travel for many EV drivers. The Model 3 is slated to begin production in late 2017, but chances are you’ll be in for a much longer wait if you didn’t put down a $1,000 refundable deposit in the first hour after Tesla began accepting pre-orders. In just two weeks, Tesla registered more than 300,000 pre-orders—a level of interest that is truly unprecedented for a car that nobody has driven yet and barely seen. Elon Musk’s stated goal is 500,000 deliveries by 2020, though many analysts doubt this projection in light of how long it has taken to for Tesla to reach peak production capacity in the past—as well as the company’s dependency on reaching full production at its battery factory.

Road Trip
FINGER LICKIN’ GOOD Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-B-Q -- among the oldest mom-and-pop BBQ restaurants in Texas -- beckons from Tyler. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY NANCY FARRAR
I
t’s an evocative symbol of southern culture, and an enticement to culinary explorers: the old BBQ stand with the faded sign, so small you wonder where they fit the smokers. Almost every town has one, and each comes with a blustering title that establishes a claim of unique superiority. After all, we’ve all sampled the “best” BBQ in Texas, often several times over in a variety of places. For an authentic BBQ experience that surpasses all the hype — and lives up to its name — hop in the car and make the drive to 525 S. Beckham Avenue in Tyler. Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-B-Q has long been a destination eatery. For more than 50 years, Stanley’s has built upon its reputation as one of the oldest mom-and-pop BBQ joints in the Lone Star State. Originally opened in 1958 by J.D. Stanley, the location had previously hosted an even older BBQ restaurant. Now revitalized under owners Nick and Jen Pencis, Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-B-Q is acquiring a whole new generation of fans. With accolades from prestigious voices such as Texas Monthly and Food & Wine, the restaurant’s lure has far surpassed that of the typical local eatery. None of its fame has cost Stanley’s an ounce of its charm, however, and visitors and locals alike can count on a down-home experience as authentic as the delectable food. Stanley’s renaissance began when Nick and Jen bought the business in 2006. Raised in the restaurant and music industries, Nick saw an opportunity to unite the two strands of his background. “My dad was a chef, then moved on to being a manager in private clubs,” says Nick. “I became interested in those two things: becoming a musician and getting into the restaurant business.” When Nick and his wife took over Stanley’s, they knew they wanted to honor the spirit of the place while adding their own stamp. An expansion has granted additional kitchen and seating space, along with a full-service bar. The most notable addition, however, is the live music schedule. “I see one of J.D.’s sons often, and he tells me that his dad would love what we’re doing,” says Nick. “He always wanted to do music.” As a professional drummer, Nick understands the impact of live music.

West FW Lifestyle | July 2016
With Stanley’s, he wanted to create a comprehensive experience for guests, with delicious food, quality drinks and top-notch entertainment. What started as a weekly showcase has grown to encompass live music every night of the week. “Live music has always been a part of my life, and there was nothing happening here,” says Nick. “As we made plans to create more pit space and longer hours, we decided it was important to include music. It’s been one of those things that’s really paid off.” While the promise of entertainment can add incentive to a trip from Fort Worth, Stanley’s real draw remains its food. The Stanley’s “experience” may have evolved; but as for the BBQ , you can’t improve on perfection. “It’s important to honor the roots of what makes a place special,” says Nick. “Why would we change a recipe that is so phenomenal? Even though I never met [J.D. Stanley], it’s important to honor his legacy.” All the recognition as one of Texas’s premier BBQ restaurants prove that Mr. Stanley’s legacy has been duly honored. If you live in Fort Worth, the most difficult aspect of your Stanley’s experience isn’t the drive to Tyler — it’s choosing what to eat. “If you’re a traditionalist and want to judge the restaurant on the Texas Trinity, we have a sample plate that’s meats and no sides,” says Nick. “You can choose brisket, ribs, sausage and turkey for a phenomenal plate.” Stanley’s Famous Bar-B-Q also stakes its reputation on its sandwiches, which are an important component of East Texas BBQ. In addition to the tried and true chopped beef, Stanley’s has its original Motherclucker, which Texas Monthly named the best BBQ sandwich in Texas. As a taste experience, it’s best described as “unforgettable” — a word that has broad application at Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-B-Q. “When you go to a restaurant, you want good food and to have people take care of you,” says Nick. “We try to offer a lot of things that impact your heart and mind, and make you feel good. I want that to be what Stanley’s is about: to have as many things as possible that make people happy.”

“O
lly olly oxen free!” Do kids play “Kick the Can” any more? Or “Flashlight Tag”? Or “Ghost in the Graveyard”? Or “Red Rover”? Do they even play outside in the evenings? When I was a kid, all the moms on the block would start calling us home when the street lights came on. And whoever happened to be “it” would shout out the all-safe signal “Olly olly oxen free” (we all used the phrase, but nobody knew exactly why). Like a herd of sweaty little oxen smelling like sidewalk, we’d come galloping from the shadows back toward our respective bug-yellow porch lights. On our block alone there were more than 20 kids – granted nearly half of them lived at our house – but there was always enough on any given night to field a couple of teams for Wiffle Ball or “Capture the Flag”. Shortly after dinner, neighbor kids would start gathering in our yard. We lived on a corner lot that was just the right size for a playing field for any sport. My poor father tried to grow grass every spring, but it was a losing battle. By June there were permanent base paths worn into the turf. And no matter how much he griped and groaned about the kids trampling his grass, he couldn’t deflate the pride I felt in having a yard that was the epicenter of activity.

West FW Lifestyle | July 2016
For hours we would play outside. And we played hard. Running, falling, scraping, crying, laughing, and peeing in the bushes because we didn’t want to run home. I even broke my arm playing “Red Rover” when Peggy McShane and Dana Rowland let go of their hands right as I was about to bust through their grip, sending me rolling down the hill behind them. And I swear I had a semi-permanent ring of chigger bites around my waste that lasted all summer. We were having way too much fun to care about the chiggers or the thick humid air or the slimy slugs we stepped on in our bare feet or all the other natural things that now persuade us to stay cooped up in our air-conditioned houses watching reruns of The Andy Griffith Show. I can’t tell you the last time I had a chigger bite. I don’t even know if the critters exist any more. Are they extinct? Either I’ve been lathered up with too much toxic bug repellant lately, or I don’t roll around in the grass enough. And I don’t know that my girls have even had a chigger bite. Well all of that is going to change this summer. My goal is teach my girls and the other neighbor kids the ins-and-out of “Kick the Can”. I pledge to sweat more and not be bothered by it. And I am going to do everything I can to rack up a few chigger bites.
Let’s see what you’re made of.
