Texas Fall
Christie & Mike Thomas | CThomas@lifestylepubs.com
I absolutely love fall! It’s the beginning of college football and cooler weather is right around the corner. I am a huge college football fan. I worked for ESPN college sports division for many years and my love is deep for these kids that play their hearts out week in and week out. TCU was my home-base and getting to work with their sports programs was a true honor. My office was in the old Daniel Meyer building and the players would stop by to raid my candy stash daily. These were the days of wine and roses early in my career that introduced me to some of Fort Worth’s greatest people. I am so thankful for the time I had there and will bleed purple always. This month’s issue is to prep you for a Fort Worth Fall and pray that all of our 100 degree days are past us. Last year Mike and I attended Oktoberfest and I was pleasantly surprised that it had the feel of the good ol’ Convention Center days and I knew instantly I wanted to share this story with our readers. Doug, our main writer, told me as we were putting together September’s publication that the stories had all the makings of a staycation. I couldn’t agree with him more. We will be in attendance at Oktoberfest wearing our chicken hats and hope to see you there. Sincerely, Christie Thomas

By emphasizing livestock health and responsible pasture management, they improve both: cattle help maintains the pasture's natural balance; in turn, the diverse grasses combine to provide top-notch food for the grazing cattle. trategic planning, sustainability and structure are all in a day’s work for one West sider – but the diagnosis of her mother’s Alzheimer’s disease was something she didn’t have a blueprint for. Jenifer Reiner, a California native Jenifer on her wedding and president of the Camp Bowie day with her mother, Jan, in 1989. District, Inc, turned to the Alzheimer’s Association – North Central Texas Chapter to find answers and is now walking her way to find a cure – Reiner created a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Fort Worth. 14
West FW Lifestyle | September 2016
Reiner was kind enough to answer some questions for West FW Lifestyle about her journey with her mother, Jan, and the devastating disease, which kills more people than breast and prostate cancer combined each year. What was the First Major Sign that your Mother had Alzheimer’s? The first serious sign was when mom, who lives in California, went to Lowe's to get something for a home project. She’s been to Lowe’s a billion times. She walked out of the store and became disoriented and couldn’t find her car. A Lowe’s worker went up and down the parking lot and eventually found her car. She was extremely embarrassed and flustered. As soon as she pulled out, she immediately got into a fender-bender.
Mom was completely undone – hysterical. When she got back into her car after the accident, she had no idea which way to turn to get home. That’s what spurred my sister to take her to the doctor. My mother was officially diagnosed with the disease at 80 years old in 2013. Has the Disease Progressed since the Diagnosis? It’s progressed and I’ve gauged it by talking on the phone with her regularly. We used to talk on the phone for an hour and at first there would be just one “I don’t remember what you said,” moment but now we can only talk for about 20 minutes before her memory lapses. How has the Alzheimer’s Association – North Central Texas Chapter Helped? When she was diagnosed I went to the Fort Worth chapter immediately. When I came to the chapter, I realized there’s a lot of people struggling with this in their families and that’s why I feel so tied to this chapter – it’s a sense of community and I don’t feel alone. Through my fundraising with the chapter, I get to listen to other people’s stories and that’s important because, in some instances, what they’ve shared with me I haven’t yet experienced with my mom. But when it does happen, I’ll be better prepared. There’s that sense of knowing what to expect in advance which gives you strength – because I know people ahead of me have persevered. What does The Walk to End Alzheimer’s Mean to You? The Walk is about honoring my mom and step-dad, but more importantly that we need to find a cure and figure this out. If walking a little can help raise money, than I’m all in.
I like the fact that I get to walk and talk with others that are in the fight against Alzheimer’s – that’s when you know we’re all in this together. Because of the chapter’s resources and support groups, I can easily connect with others in my situation. My hope for the future is that there will be a Camp Bowie District team because some business owners and their clientele have a personal connection with Alzheimer’s. I’ve realized that everyone has been affected some way with the disease. What Do You Want Other People who are Dealing with the Disease to Know? I’d tell them to reach out to the Alzheimer’s Association because they’re the ideal resource no matter what stage you’re in. Not only do they have the latest information, but they have a comforting and qualified staff to aide in your unique circumstances. To visit Reiner’s team page, please visit: http://bit.ly/reinerteam. The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. To start or join a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, please visit act.alz.org/NCTCwalks. To learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and available resources, call the 24/7, toll-free Helpline at 800-272-3900. The North Central Texas Chapter covers a 40-county service area and Fort Worth serves as headquarters for the chapter, which has regional offices in Abilene, Waco and Wichita Falls. The chapter is a nonprofit, donor-supported organization. The programs and services are made possible through contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations.

WHEELS FOR WELLNESS
DOWNTOWN FORT WORTH'S ICONIC CAR SHOW RETURNS TO RAISE MONEY AND AWARENESS FOR CANCER.
ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS
G
earheads understand that half the pleasure of a showpiece car comes from sharing it with others. Of course, by “share” we don’t mean drive; most auto enthusiasts would sooner hand over their spouses than their keys. We mean put the treasured automobile on display, and let others look at, appreciate, and pine over the objects of our obsession. Whether it’s antique single-cylinders or rumbling muscle cars, the pristine vehicles you encounter on the car show circuit bespeak the dedication and hard work of their owners. This September 17th, car lovers of all types are invited to one of the largest car shows in Texas: the 2016 Wheels for Wellness Downtown Fort Worth Benefit Car Show. Previously known as Cowtown Cruisin for a Cure, the benefit car show developed a sterling reputation across its fourteen year run. When the organization behind Cowtown Cruisin for a Cure ceased operation, some of those involved sought to continue the good work and great times. Co-founder Scott McConnell served as president of the previous event for 10 years. “We all wanted to get together and keep the ball rolling with the same venue to continue the tradition of this event,” says Scott. “Both for the car enthusiast community and the community-at-large.” The original car show began with 185 cars in the first year. By the end of its run, this number had risen to over 500 vehicles, making it one of the premier car show events in Texas. Unlike many car shows, Wheels for Wellness has a higher purpose to go along with the display of sweet rides, restorations, and one-of-a-kind customs: cancer-care and awareness. “We estimate that the event attracts between 15 and 20,000 attendees,” says Scott. “The public can come down and view the cars for free. Anyone who wants to display their car pays an entry fee, and those fees go toward the charities.” This year, the car show will take place from 10AM to 3PM along Main St. in downtown Fort Worth. As a day’s excursion, you can hardly do better than a free car show; add in the lure of downtown’s restaurants and boutiques, and it’s never felt easier to benefit a worthwhile cause. 16
West FW Lifestyle | September 2016
Car culture exemplifies a curious combination of sentiment and practicality: sheer horsepower gets celebrated alongside nostalgia for bench seats and tailfins. As a nation, we all have a peculiar fascination with automobiles: the curving elegance of classic styling, the intoxicating scent of burnt rubber and gasoline, the endless stretch of an isolated highway and powerful thrust of an American-made engine; all of this is written into our collective DNA, and cars have become for many the four-wheeled muse to replace horses and clipper ships. Car shows give all of us— even those who wouldn’t know a clutch from a carburetor — a chance to indulge this passion. “You never know exactly what will be there, but we’ll certainly have some fabulous cars,” says Scott. “We draw people all the way from Houston with this show, and unlike some shows that will pay an appearance fee to have the Batmobile or whatever, we prefer to emphasize purely interesting cars: classics, antiques, hot rods, customs, imports, you name it. It broadens the appeal so everyone has something to enjoy.” Amazing cars aside, it wouldn’t be Wheels for Wellness without a laudable beneficiary. This year, attendees and participants can help raise funds for an admirable group of cancer-related organizations: the Prostate Cancer Resource Center at Texas Health Harris Fort Worth, the Fort Worth Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Coalition, and Prostate Cancer Research at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Event attendees can also see to their own health, as Wheels for Wellness plans to offer free prostrate cancer screenings from 10AM to 2PM the day of the show. “We’ll offer free screenings for men through Harris Hospital,” says Scott. “That’s kind of the mission of the show, get men to come to the event, and get them tested and screened for prostate cancer.” Wheels for Wellness hopes to raise $100,000 this year for its affiliate charities. For more information, or to make an online donation, visit www.wheelsforwellness.org. If you’d like to showcase your car, day-of entrant registration costs $40 and comes with a complimentary goody bag.

reakfast: the most important meal of the day. An old saying of dubious veracity, it nevertheless conveys the esteem in which the humble meal is held. An exquisite breakfast conveys an air of relaxation and luxury, and is generally a treat reserved for long weekends, holidays, and vacations. Yolk, a new breakfast and lunch spot recently opened at 305 Main St. in downtown Fort Worth, gives anyone a chance to start their day with a little vacation. This fastpaced, graciously operated diner promises to satisfy, and ensures that any day begins sunny-side up. A family-owned and operated eatery that got its start in Chicago, Yolk arrived in Fort Worth under the guidance of Nick Roditis. A 17-year veteran of the restaurant industry, Nick was entrusted with the stewardship of Yolk by the restaurant’s founder, Taki Kastanis. “I’ve known him since I was born, our parents were best friends, and his uncle baptized me,” says Nick. “He started Yolk about 10 years ago in Chicago, and the concept just took off.” When Taki decided to expand his operation into Texas, he turned to his old friend Nick. The appeal of Sundance Square became

apparent, and Yolk arrived to further distinguish downtown Fort Worth as a lively and bustling urban center. “We love Fort Worth,” says Nick. “It’s booming here. Downtown is a great, friendly neighborhood, very American. With all the foot traffic, it creates a community vibe, and we saw that we could offer a whole new breakfast concept.” The Yolk concept is a streamlined and enthusiastic experience where an abundant menu promises to satisfy any breakfast craving. The bright and airy restaurant has a spacious patio, and can accommodate guests for a leisurely brunch, power lunch, or business powwow. Yolk has also become a popular destination for families who want a hearty start to a day of fun around Sundance Square. “We’re a fast-paced, energetic breakfast concept where everything is fresh, and customer service is second-to-none,” says Nick. “We take pride in everything we do. You can come here for a business meeting, or join your family for brunch.” Yolk truly serves as a unifier of the diverse community that makes downtown Fort Worth special. On any given day, you’ll encounter a vast assortment of people — young and old, groups and individuals, from focused professionals who enjoy the speedy service, to twenty-somethings enjoying a BYOB brunch. “People from all walks of life come in to share the family experience,” says Nick. “In this fast-paced world, people getting together to enjoy a meal is almost a lost art. Breakfast also gets overlooked a lot, and we aim to fix that.” The “fixing” of breakfast gets accomplished — and then some — via Yolk’s expansive menu. As per the restaurant’s name, guests can expect unparalleled egg dishes; Yolk does not limit itself to omelets, however. “We have a huge menu,” says Nick, “with a wide variety of things to choose from. There is truly something on there for everyone. We serve breakfast all day and lunch all day. Our hours are 6am to 3pm, and if you want a burger first thing in the morning, it’s yours. The South of the Border Benedict, one of Yolk’s many award-winning Benedict creations, uses Texas-made chorizo in place of the traditional Canadian bacon. Poached eggs come topped with cilantro and a chipotle sauce for just the right amount of kick. For diners who prefer breakfast sans meat, the California Omelet provides a hearty option: this five-egg omelet includes avocado, sautéed mushrooms, green onions, tomatoes, and fresh garlic, and comes topped with jack, cheddar,
and swiss cheeses. Both of theses dishes come with red diced potatoes or fresh fruit. As for coffee, Yolk offers its own private label, premium brew. In addition to practically every breakfast dish you can imagine, Yolk has a range of lunch options that includes sandwiches, burgers, and salads. The Citrus Blast Salad presents a cornucopia of mixed greens, apple, avocado, pecan, raisins, mandarin orange, dried cranberries, bleu cheese, and grilled chicken topped with a mango chardonnay vinaigrette. KEEP CALM AND PROST ON Oktoberfest -- bigger and better than ever -- returns to Panther Island Pavilion for its third year. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS
O
nce upon a time — or, more appropriately, es war einmal — Fort Worth celebrated the noble institution of Oktoberfest at a festival hosted by the Fort Worth Symphony at the downtown Convention Center. Several years ago, this tradition came to an end, and there was much weeping and gnashing of teeth. Many noble spirits carried the torch of Oktoberfest with smaller events hosted at local bars, but these lacked the grand, communal atmosphere of the citywide celebration. Three years ago, the intrepid souls at the Trinity River Vision Authority set out to correct this wrong, and gave our singular and fun-loving city a proper Oktoberfest. This September 22-24, Oktoberfest Fort Worth returns to Panther Island Pavilion for its third incarnation. Across three days, the festival gives locals and visitors alike a glorious excuse to eat bratwurst, hoist steins, declaim “Prost!” and celebrate all things Germanic. “We had an opportunity to host an event at Panther Island in the fall, and wanted to do something for Fort Worth that has a cultural impact,” says Shanna Cate of TRVA. “We credit Spaten, our beer sponsor, for jumping in and making this possible. We reached 22

out to our sister city in Germany, looked at other festivals in the area, and everyone agreed that Fort Worth needed a true Oktoberfest. From the beginning, the TRVA placed an emphasis on authenticity. The group opened a dialogue with Treier, Fort Worth’s sister city, and extended an invitation for the mayor to attend. As for the festival itself, attendees won’t find hamburgers and Bud Light “We only sell German and craft beers, no domestics,” says Shanna. “We have German food, crafts, and bands. We are really trying to limit ourselves to German-themed vendors. Sponsorship by Spaten makes it easy to serve the German beer component of the festival. Known as the “flavor of Munich,” the brewery dates its history back to the 14th century, and claims a large part of the responsibility for the worldwide popularization of German beers. The ceremonial tapping of the kegs, which signals the commencement of Oktoberfest, began as a tradition in Munich in 1950. The beer used on this historic occasion? Spaten, of course; the same, in fact, that will flow at Fort Worth’s tapping of the keg on Thursday, September 22nd
“Thursday night is the big tapping of the keg ceremony,” says Shanna. “We bring in the elected officials and community stakeholders, and they do a toast. The business community has traditionally been interested in coming to that event. In 2017, Treier plans to send over a delegation, and we hope to tap the kegs with mayors of both cities.” Those who want to join Fort Worth’s Keg Tapping Committee can arrive at Panther Island Pavilion at 5pm on Thursday. The opening ceremonies get conducted within the Spaten Main Hall, and attendees can witness the live tapping of the first kegs. Per tradition, the tappers will use wooden mallets and bronze spouts, and strive to spill nary a drop. The event continues that night with live music, courtesy of Brave Combo, Alpine Village Band, the Walburg Boys, and Alpenmusikanten. Ceremony and pomp certainly add a valuable aura of history to Oktoberfest. But let’s be honest: the true draw is beer, revelry, and good times shared in The Shack. The party really gets started — and the beer flowing — on Friday. The festivities once again kick off at 5pm, so attendees can save their “sick days” for the following Monday. “We program every stage with entertainment all night long,” says Shanna. “Friday night we also have our Young Professional Olympics. Non-profits, community groups, and young professional organizations compete in German-themed games for prizes and bragging rights. If you’ve ever wanted to prove your mettle alongside your coworkers, or forge bonds of fraternity through the thrill of competition, you can’t miss this opportunity to rolls kegs, carry steins, and toss sausages for sport. If your group doesn’t come out on top, never fear: there are no real losers when everyone gets to drink Spaten beer. Live music for Friday arrives thanks to the efforts off Das Ist Lustig, 3rd Generation, Alpenmusikanten, and Off the Grid Band. Saturday gives everyone an opportunity to slip into some leiderhosen, pull up those trachten socks, and really make a go of the Bavarian Bacchanalia. Oktoberfest runs from 11AM until 11PM, and the day comes jam-packed with activities suitable for all ages. To start the day off right, consider the Oktoberfest Run und Ride. This event comprises a 5k and 1-mile fun-run, plus a 15-mile bike ride. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers, and all participants can celebrate completion with a frosty stein of Spaten. A special beer concoction, the Radler, makes it debut this year to provide the perfect capstone to the Run und Ride. The Radler, which is German for “cyclist,” consists of a half-and-half mixture of beer and lemonade. In German-speaking regions, it was traditionally offered as a less-alcoholic alternative for athletes in need of some post-competition refreshment. The fun continues after the race with a slate of activities targeted to families, including Bavarian
dances and a couple events dedicated to Germany’s unofficial canine ambassador: the dachshund. “Saturday caters to people who want to get up early, have a workout, and reward themselves with a beer,” says Shanna. “Mid-day we’ll have the dachshund races and parade, which is a favorite among the kids. Saturday afternoon also has a lot of games, while the evening is focused on the bands and entertainment. By that point, everyone will be singing and dancing.” For those who missed out on the Young Professional Olympics, Saturday afternoon presents a chance for solo competitors to test their mettle against stein hoisting, bier barrel rolling, and stein carrying. Authentic German music carries the festival through to its finish, and Saturday’s lineup includes Alpine Village Band, Brave Combo, Das Ist Lustig, 3rd Generation, Alpenmusikaten, and more. Between each act, attendees can hop on the stage and participate in a “stein hoist.” Ten competitors, each with a liter of Spaten’s finest, compete to see who can hoist their bier the longest. Tickets for the festival are available now online at www.oktoberfestfw.com. A limited number of early-bird purchasers will get a limited-edition stein, and children aged 12 and under get free admission. This year, the TRVA has partnered with the Reata to offer an Oktoberfest VIP option. A $60 ticket provides entry into the special Reata Haus, which provides a three-course meal with options of Pork Schnitzel,German Sausage, or Roasted Chicken with Bacon Onion Gravy. The ticket also includes festival admission, a commemorative stein, VIP seating in a special air-conditioned pavilion, and complimentary non-alcoholic beverages. Whether you want to showcase your skills at a sausage toss, kick up your heels to a polka, sample great beers, or chow down on Bavarian pretzels, streudel, skillet potatoes, and roasted nuts, Fort Worth’s 2016 Oktoberfest lets anyone become a German for a day. Buy your tickets now, and let the good times roll along with the kegs.

T
LAUGHTER IMPROVS ANYTHING WITH FOUR DAY WEEKEND, FORT WORTH HAS ITS VERY OWN NATIONALLYRENOWNED SHOW. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS

he vibrancy of Fort Worth’s core has no clearer representation than Sundance Square on the weekends. Amid the din of voices that populate the air on a Friday or Saturday night, chances are you’ll hear laughter, along with quotes and one-liners that may sound totally nonsensical heard out of context. You can thank Sundance Square Management for the vital atmosphere that pervades Fort Worth’s downtown. For the laughter, however, you have to give credit to Four Day Weekend. The Four Day Weekend story began 20 years ago, when three friends pooled their resources to launch what they believed was a limited-run show. “Three guys put in 700 dollars each, and the goal was to do a six-week run at the Casa Mañana theater on the square,” says David Wilk, Four Day Weekend co-founder and cast member. “We didn’t even know if people would come for six weeks.” Four Day Weekend’s creation followed a series of concurrences reminiscent of the happenstance unity seen in the group’s improv sketches. Only by chance did the troupe settle on Fort Worth for its run, and the permanent residency that followed appeared as if designed by fate. “We were all performing comedy in Dallas,” says David. “One of the founders said, ‘Hey, when was the last time you’ve been in Fort Worth?’ So we all piled in the car, and when we got there, Sundace Square was jumping. People were having coffee, sitting on patios; if you’re in downtown Dallas at 10PM, it’s because your greyhound bus was late.” That very night, the group of comedians found a theater, made a pitch to the manager, and had their space for the sixweek run. Now located in the Caravan of Dreams theater above the Reata, Four Day Weekend has performed over 5,000 times. Its performances, held twice-nightly on Fridays and Saturdays, regularly fill the theater to capacity. The act has become Fort Worth’s most famous show, a downtown datenight staple, and a required experience for visitors. Not only
West FW Lifestyle | September 2016
that, but the troupe has garnered national and international renown, and won a diverse array of accolades. Fort Worth has recognized Four Day Weekend’s contributions to the community with the Key to the City of Fort Worth and title of Fort Worth’s Greatest Ambassadors. The Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce named them the 2014 Small Business of the Year, and the troupe currently has distinction as the 2016-2017 Entrepreneurs in Residence at TCU’s Neeley School of Business. Additionally, the cast has met two presidents — George W. Bush and Barack Obama — and presented a keynote address to the United States Congress. David attributes much of the group’s success to its “yes, and” philosophy. “In the beginning, nobody knew how to run a business,” explains David. “Someone came up with the idea that we should run it like a stage show. On stage, the word ‘no’ doesn’t exist. We replace it with the words ‘yes, and’ to generate these out-of-box ideas that we would never otherwise have. Once we started that, things just exploded.” The “yes, and” philosophy led directly to Four Day Weekend’s creation of its Training Center, which offers improv classes for students aged 18 and up. The philosophy has also led to Four Day Weekend’s newfound consultancy role, where they share the benefits of improvisation and collaboration to businesses and students. If you’ve not yet experienced an act firsthand, consider this: Four Day Weekend travels the world to perform before enthusiastic crowds in locales as far-flung as Belgium, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The troupe plays the same circuits as entertainers like Jerry Seinfeld and Dana Carvey — and in Fort Worth you can see them anytime you want. “We have fun, we don’t make fun of,” says David in summary of a typical show. “The whole show is predicated on meeting people and exploring ideas. Anything can happen. One night we ordered pizza on stage, and when the pizza guy showed up, we had a jam session with him.” As one of the city’s representative institutions, Four Day Weekend has served as both catalyst and witness of downtown’s growth and transformation. “Our success has been a confluence of Mother Nature, timing, and hard work,” says David. “We also have to give credit to everyone at Sundance Square Management. To watch what has happened to Sundance Square, as we were right there as a cornerstone, it’s been amazing. Thank God we chose Fort Worth!”

ANDREW BRADFIELD'S FURNITURE CREATIONS BENEFIT FROM PREMIER CRAFTSMANSHIP AND SINGULAR DESIGN.
S
ometimes, art seems to have a will of its own. Stories abound of artistic pieces that seemingly leapt into being, where the artists themselves acted as mere channels for inspiration. For sculptors, one often hears that the materials themselves dictate the form; the finished piece was there all along within the driftwood or stone — it just needed the artist to shore away excess. Andrew Bradfield is a largely self-taught sculptor and furniture-maker, whose designs reflect the graceful elegance of his source materials. He often uses native, Texas-born woods: live oak and pecan, which grow in abundance in his neighborhood in Ridglea Hills. Andrew also works in concrete, a versatile medium that practically everyone takes for granted. From these humble ingredients — which literally surround us — Andrew creates sculptures, implements, and furniture that fully occupy their space. In other words, Bradfield’s creations have an organic wholeness, an inherent unity that becomes apparent through touch or sight; as if they’ve always existed, and Mr. Bradfield simply found them hidden within a block of wood. Andrew’s artistic pursuits had humble beginnings. His first foray into craftsmanship came as an apprentice cabinet-maker, a role he stumbled into after selling a business and starting work on his own house. “It began in 2002, and I worked for the carpenter full time. We did everything from demolition to dry-wall, just me, him, and his wife,” says Andrew. “That’s where I learned to use the tools responsibly. When we started the cabinetry, I realized how much I enjoyed the work.” After the completion of his own home, Andrew continued with the contractor on a part-time basis. He attracted his own clients for custom cabinetry, and for ten years worked the trade of a craftsman. When Andrew began to dabble in custom furniture, his readily apparent skill drew commissions. Throughout 2016, the transition away from cabinet-making became complete, and Andrew now focuses exclusively on custom furniture. “Furniture is what I enjoy more than anything,” says Andrew, “and the time you can take to really work on a piece. Utility comes first. For most of my designs, the thing that stands out is how simple they are. I like to think of them as strong, substantial, thicker than what people may be used to; sometimes when you pick up a piece of
26
West FW Lifestyle | September 2016
furniture, it just feels too light, and I want my pieces to have solidity.” As for inspiration, Andrew turns to the work of others: George Nakashima, the noted woodworker and architect, is a big influence. Andrew also finds ideas in the pages of magazines like Architectural Digest, and in the world around him. Ideas get fleshed out on paper, and once Andrew has finished a preliminary design, he fashions a model. “I’m horrible at drawing, but I’ll do some rough sketches to get an idea from my head onto paper,” says Andrew. “Then, to help the client know what to expect, I’ll make a small, Barbie-doll-sized model. You can pick it up, see the piece in three dimensions. It’ll have the same wood and finish as the completed product.” HIs preferred materials are walnut and white oak, both of which have a density and grain that make them ideal for custom furniture. Andrew also works with wood harvested from around his neighborhood. As someone who respects his materials, Andrew is unwilling to let good wood go to waste, and will haul away felled trees, then chop them down to convert later into handmade items. As Andrew’s reputation has spread, the demand for his custom furniture has grown. What began as requests from his wife’s salon clientele — Andrew created much of the furniture inside Lux Machine, which his wife owns — developed into a thriving, one-man business. “As for selling pieces, my client list started from the salon,” says Andrew of Lux Machine. “As that’s grown, it’s gone from salon clients to friends, to friends of friends. I don’t know what I’d have done without that avenue. It would have remained a hobby, for sure.” For anyone who appreciates well-made furniture, local craftsmanship, and artistic utility, this “hobby’s” evolution represents a fortuitous turn of events. To view Andrew’s work firsthand, purchase pieces, or place a commission, make sure to visit Lux Machine at 4816 Camp Bowie Boulevard for Fall Gallery Night on September 10th. There, Andrew will have his first public show alongside painter Sarah Gentry and jewelry-maker Jennifer Berry.

SHEEPDOGS &
Whisky A PICTURESQUE WEEK TAKING IN THE GLORIES OF SCOTLAND ARTICLE | PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN
I
’ve long wished to visit Scotland, to experience the culture and to see up close the ruggedly beautiful countryside and volcanic mountains such as Ben Nevis and Glen Coe. Oh yes, and to sample the whisky. Last fall my wife and I took a weeklong group tour of Scotland, and it was a low-stress, easy way to get acquainted with the country. Bus tours have their drawbacks — you can’t deviate far from the tour itinerary and schedule — but they are also appealing because everything is pre-arranged. Luggage is picked up and delivered to your room each day, many meals are included and there is very little time spent waiting in line at attractions because tours get preference. Our tour started in Edinburgh, and we arrived a day early so we would have time to adjust to the time change. After a day spent touring this ancient city, we hopped on the bus and headed for the mountainous Scottish highlands and our overnight stay at the Laggan Country Hotel near the tiny hamlet of Laggan. On the way we made a quick stop at St. Andrews, the home of golf. Despite a soft rain, being able to stand at the fabled 18th green and visualize Tom Watson waving goodbye from Swilcan Bridge for the final time in 2015 sent a chill up my spine. We arrived at our Highlands hotel by mid-afternoon and after a brief rest we drove to nearby Aviemore for a 45-minute sheepdog exhibition by Neil Ross of Leault Working Sheepdogs. Scotland has more sheep than people and raising sheep is one of the predominant types of farming. Sheepdogs are a crucial part of tending flocks. Ross has more than a dozen dogs, as well as a few pups, on his beautiful farm near the heart of the Cairngorms National Park and he frequently hosts tour groups. With the virtuosity of an orchestra conductor, Ross commanded his dogs with whistles, hand gestures and occasional shouts. The precision with which the dogs rounded up and moved a small herd of sheep was startling. At one point in the demonstration, Ross had four dogs lie down about 20 yards apart while a single dog drove the herd back and forth between the dogs as if they were weaving through gates. Young pups were just learning and often took their lead from the older dogs. Our visit culminated with Ross shearing a sheep by hand. As the afternoon turned to twilight it was back to the inn for a wee dram of whisky to ward off the late fall chill before dinner. Like sheep, whisky (no e in Scottish whisky) is a staple of Scottish life and has been for centuries. Scotland’s earliest documented distilling of whisky dates to tax records of 1494, when Friar John Cor bought “eight bolls of malt to make aqua vitae (water of life).” The Scotch Whisky Regulations 28

PROSPECTIVE PARENT NIGHT Tuesday, October 18, 2016 7:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. define “Scotch Whisky” as that produced at a distillery in Scotland from water and malted barley, processed, fermented and matured in Scotland for at least three years. Throughout our stay in Scotland I marveled at the vast array of whiskies that come from the more than 100 distilleries in five main whisky-producing regions. A small whisky shop in the mountain town of Pitlochry had an entire wall stacked floor-to-ceiling with boutique brands. The Glengoyne distillery north of Glasgow was founded in 1833. Our tour included a “wee dram” at 10 in the morning. The Glengoyne visitor center had several displays that demonstrated how whisky changes as it ages. It takes on a darker color from the sherry oak cask in which it is aged, and over time evaporation causes the volume to decrease. That explains why some really old vintages are so expensive. Glengoyne sells its 35-year-old whisky for £2,850 pounds, or about $4,097 a bottle. There are as many sides to Scotland as there are brands of whisky and that means that a weeklong tour is just a “wee dram.” There are many more places to explore the next time, and I especially want to visit some of the smaller villages in places such as the Shetland, Orkney and Hebrides islands. Oh yes, and sample a few more whiskies.

Mulling Over the Wine Reviews DENISE SNODELL
I
was a weary shopper looking for a simple Riesling when my innocent eyes fell upon this: “Opens with a gorgeous bouquet of yellow flowers, stone fruit and musk against a backdrop of chalk and minerals. It’s richly fruity, with a sharp, honed acidity that’s shocking and penetrating. Finishes long, with an elegant honeyed touch.” Wuuut? I wasn’t sure if I was in a liquor store or in some seedy place reading Fifty Shades of Grapes. As E.L. James would say, “Holy cow!” I looked left. I looked right. I unlocked my cell phone and photographed the posted review card. The description of this pricey 94-pointer just floored me. I had to have it. The words, not the bottle. It’s an old story. Those of us who are, shall we say, less experienced wine lovers are intrigued and bemused by the industry’s word sommeliers. They can be a bit too passionate, or even bizarre, when explaining the flavor subtleties trapped beneath the cork. Call me a rube, but I don’t think my taste buds could ever fathom a backdrop of chalk. Yet the words quoted above had been fermenting in my cell phone picture gallery for a full season, and I had this crushing column deadline. The time arrived to fully investigate this exotic verbiage at a bigger wine store. Lo and behold, my research day coincided with a storewide wine tasting. Everywhere I turned, there was a rep tempting customers with sips of their forbidden fruits. They were stationed at the aisle endcaps, pouring samples of “honed acidity” and “deeply pitched notes of blistered tomato and pomegranate.” It was like a high octane Saturday at Costco. The place was crowded, but I managed to sneak some shots of the review cards. I honestly had no idea a bottle of pinot could tease your

palate with supple tannins that build slowly to frame a sappy floral pastille, but apparently it can. I hadn’t quite snapped enough reviews when a champagne expert waved me over to her table. As I slammed down a few sips of Taittinger, I explained why I was there, “I am baffled at how specific and bizarre some of these booze reviews can be. For instance, how can you taste underbrush? Underbrush! Do these aficionados crawl through the woods and chomp on low lying twigs?” She shrugged and told me descriptions including “forest floor brambles” are, indeed, a thing. But, as she poured me something dryer, she said linking squirrel environments to Syrah was the least of the crazy. “I’ve actually seen reviewers use the words ‘manure’ and ‘cat pee.’” I was stunned. “Really? Surely they finessed the descriptions with something like ‘hints of fertile meadow and subtle feline mist.’” Though concerned, I managed a quick sip of the dry stuff. But as she poured me yet another sample, she insisted, “No. The exact words were manure and cat pee.” Wow, I thought. Animal droppings. The dark forest’s underbelly. It was dizzying to imagine the wine scribes getting so noir. But a funny thing happened. We continued discussing all the weirdness right there under the fluorescent retail lights. I was on my fifth (or sixth or seventh) sample and—boom-- I tasted it. My senses took me back to a private champagne cave tour I was fortunate to experience years ago in Reims, France. That one sip blossomed into a sweet, yet musty-dry medieval tapestry of tarnished armor, lightly sun-kissed by a lavender reduction… In other words, I think the secret to writing this stuff requires a full immersion.
