A NEW VENTURE ROOTED IN PASSION AND PURPOSE

MOTHER NATURE’S LANDSCAPING AND DESIGN

Heather Walsh and Sergio Sanmiguel

Last fall Heather Walsh, a former TV producer with a long history in reality television, took a leap of faith and co-founded Mother Nature’s Landscaping and Design with her business partner Sergio Sanmiguel. This new venture was the culmination

the land—it became a form of therapy for me.”

Sergio was on the same page. After years of television work, including a stint on Animal Planet, Sergio was ready to step away. Together, they realized they could build a business

“I FOUND JOY IN LANDSCAPING AND TAKING CARE OF THE LAND.” HEATHER WALSH

of Heather and Sergio’s passion for nature, her desire to create beautiful outdoor spaces, and her commitment to being near her family.

Heather’s journey into the world of landscaping wasn’t the typical path one might expect. With a decade of experience in TV production, including roles with MTV’s Teen Mom, TLC’s Unexpected, and the hit show Love After Lockup, Heather had spent most of her adult life in the fast-paced world of television. She loved her work but found herself longing for a life that allowed her to spend more time at home with her children. She was always drawn to the outdoors, even from a young age, and wondered how she could turn this passion into a career.

“I grew up in West Hartford and spent much of my childhood outside. But working in Manhattan for years, I didn’t have a yard, and I really missed being outside,” Heather shares. “During the pandemic, I had more time to reconnect with nature. I found joy in landscaping and taking care of

that combined their love for the environment and nature with their skills in design and project management.

“Before meeting Heather, I was always outside, whether it was working on a show or just spending time in my own backyard,” Sergio recalls. “I noticed the difference that high-end landscaping and creative outdoor spaces could make in people’s lives. That’s when I knew we had the opportunity to create something special.”

Mother Nature’s Landscaping, a full service landscaping company including design, construction and maintenance, was born out of this shared vision, but it has quickly become more than just a landscaping company. While Heather’s focus has been on providing exceptional design and outdoor spaces, Sergio has brought his expertise in transforming yards into functional and beautiful living spaces.

“We want people to enjoy their outdoor areas as extensions of their homes, not just spaces that are neglected or left unused,” he says.

CONTINUED >

“We incorporate everything from gardens and seating areas to create environments where people can host events or simply relax with their families.”

What sets Mother Nature’s Landscaping apart from other landscaping companies is their commitment to creating beautiful, functional spaces while emphasizing quality and perfection.

“We don’t just mow lawns and blow leaves. We design. We care about every detail, and it shows in our work,” Heather says.

A key part of their mission is to empower women, especially single mothers, by offering job opportunities in a field traditionally dominated by men.

“I didn’t want to just be another landscaping company, most of which hire men,” Heather explains. “We’re actively hiring women, especially single moms, who are looking for flexible work opportunities. It’s about helping people reconnect with their outdoor spaces and, for me, it’s about giving women opportunities in a field where they’re often underrepresented,” Heather says.

Since its unofficial launch in the fall, Mother Nature’s Landscaping has made a mark here. From designing front stoops for holidays to creating stunning event spaces, the company has earned a reputation for transforming outdoor spaces into something special.

Their collaboration with Tina Kiniry Management, a local talent agency, on a fall fashion show last year is just one example of how they are expanding into event design.

SERGIO SANMIGUEL

The local community, Heather says, has been supportive of their new venture.

“We are so appreciative of all the support we’ve received from the community and would like to give a special shout-out to Scott Lewis from Lewis Realty for helping us make our dream a reality.”

While they’re committed to growing their landscaping busines, Heather and Sergio have also established their own television production company and a podcast.

Landscaping has become more than just a business—it’s a way to feel grounded, embrace nature, and create something that brings joy to others, they say.

“I just get so much happiness from being outside, working with my hands, and from creating something beautiful,” says Heather.

TRANSFORMING SPACES, CULTIVATING BEAUTY

Since its modest beginnings in 1984, E.A. Quinn Landscape Contracting, based in Glastonbury, has evolved from Ed Quinn’s solo lawn mowing service into a premier landscaping powerhouse serving clients across Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, southern New Hampshire, and Maine.

“We try to use plants native to the area that help beautify the space yet are also functional.”  Justin Wolf

Today, the company employs 140 dedicated professionals who craft stunning outdoor spaces for residential homeowners.

Fran Quinn Knights, Sales and Marketing Manager, reflects on the company’s journey: “It started with Ed and his Mustang knocking on doors, just trying to get lawns to mow. Over the years, his vision and strategic growth transformed his efforts into a successful operation serving three key markets: commercial maintenance, residential design-build, and commercial install.”

EXPERT CRAFTSMANSHIP AND PERSONALIZED SERVICE

With years of experience and a passion for creativity, E.A. Quinn specializes in designing and constructing beautiful outdoor living spaces, luxurious pool projects, and revitalizing challenging sites into inviting retreats. The firm brings artistry, functionality, and sustainable solutions to every project. At the core of E.A. Quinn’s success are its expert team members like Justin Wolf, Hardscape Division Manager, and Tim

Jewett, Sales Designer, who see each site’s challenges not as barriers but as opportunities for innovation. One of the cornerstones of their expertise is transforming outdoor spaces into beautiful alfresco environments where families gather, friends celebrate, and nature thrives. “We specialize in making each project a reflection of the owner’s dreams, using our expertise to blend design with the natural topography of New England’s diverse landscape,” says Justin.

DESIGNING UNIQUE OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES

E.A. Quinn’s portfolio showcases their ability to handle a variety of demanding projects, such as transforming a Granby property with 8,000 square feet of outdoor porcelain patios and intricate landscaping around a new construction build. They also excel in maximizing smaller spaces, as seen in a Madison project featuring high-end marble patios and an infinity pool.

“Our approach is to create outdoor living areas that extend your home’s lifestyle beyond its four

interior walls,” Tim adds. This includes crafting custom outdoor pools that are not just water features but sanctuaries for relaxation and spaces for family entertainment.

REVITALIZING CHALLENGING SITES

The team thrives on revitalizing challenging landscapes. Whether dealing with uneven terrain, poor drainage, or difficult access points, E.A. Quinn views these as opportunities to transform these areas into beautifully functional outdoor spaces.

“No site is too difficult for us,” Fran says. “We’re known for turning complex problems into stunning, well-designed landscapes.” From hillside properties to urban environments, they adapt to each site’s unique challenges and transform them into something extraordinary.

SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Sustainability is a significant focus for E.A. Quinn. They use predominantly natural materials and employ sustainable practices like water management and utilizing native plants that contribute to the area’s ecological health. Justin says,

“The biggest thing I would say from a sustainability standpoint is how we manage the water, how we capture that water, what we do with that water. Plus, the overall function of the space is something that we consider in terms of how the flow of traffic goes and how it sustains natural elements. The last part concerns planting. We try to use plants native to the area that help beautify the space yet are also functional.”

“We’re committed to enhancing the client experience through every step of the process, ensuring each project not only meets but exceeds expectations.”

E.A. Quinn is exceptionally well-versed in two additional areas: custom outdoor pools and waterfront properties, he adds.

SELLING A HOME IN 2025?

KADJI ANDERSON:

SELLING HOMES IN PROBATE OR IN AN AUCTION

As Glastonbury and Hartford County’s population ages, many homeowners and their families face the challenge of preparing a home for sale. If you’re selling a home that belongs or belonged to a loved one, understanding the probate process is crucial. If a homeowner passes without a living trust, probate court oversees property distribution. This can be time-consuming, so working with experienced professionals ensures a smoother sale.

Decluttering is key to showcasing a home’s potential, but handling decades of possessions can feel overwhelming. That’s where my specialized auction services come in. We provide full-service home cleanouts where items are evaluated, discarded, donated, or sold through our auction platform. Cleanup costs are reimbursed first, and profits from auction sales are split 50-50 between my company and the homeowner or estate. This efficient process not only clears the property quickly but also helps maximize value.

Whether you’re navigating probate or simply downsizing, thoughtful preparation can transform a stressful process into a successful, rewarding experience.

DAWN GAGLIARDI: PLAN AHEAD - FAR AHEAD!

Preparing to sell your home well in advance is crucial for a smooth and successful sale, says Dawn Gagliardi, a Realtor with Serhant CT in West Hartford. Starting early allows homeowners to make strategic decisions that can enhance the home’s value and appeal to potential buyers. “Even contacting a Realtor a year before you plan to sell can provide valuable insights into the current market trends, necessary repairs or upgrades, and a realistic timeline.”

Realtors can offer expert advice on how to maximize your home’s value, she adds, whether through minor renovations, decluttering, or staging.

“By planning ahead, you give yourself time to assess the market conditions, which can fluctuate, and adjust your selling strategy accordingly. Early preparation also helps avoid rushed decisions that could negatively impact the sale, such as pricing too high or neglecting important repairs.” Furthermore, Realtors can assist with understanding your local area’s demand, inventory, and pricing trends, helping you set a competitive yet achievable selling price.

In addition, preparing early gives you more time to manage any emotional aspects of selling, allowing for a clearer, more rational approach when the time comes to list your home. Starting the process a year in advance ensures you are well-positioned to achieve your goals and sell for the best price possible.

STAGING YOUR HOME

Staging a home is essential for creating a strong first impression and helping potential buyers envision themselves living in the home, says Paula Ostop, a Realtor with William Raveis Real Estate in West Hartford. By showcasing a home’s best features, she says, staging maximizes its appeal through

thoughtful styling and design. Regardless of the price point, every home I list is staged to ensure it stands out.

We often use existing items in the home, enhancing them with fresh decor, flowers, and strategic rearranging to improve flow and make the space feel inviting. For homes that are empty or partially moved out, we bring in the necessary furniture and accessories to create a warm, welcoming environment.”

Cleanliness is paramount in the staging process. From dust-free vents to sparkling windows, every detail is meticulously addressed. A pristine home signals to buyers that the property has been well-maintained, building confidence and trust. We also focus on eliminating any odors and ensuring the space feels fresh and cared for.

Staging goes beyond aesthetics; it’s a strategic move that can significantly impact the sale price, with homes potentially earning $20,000–$50,000 more when staged correctly.

“The most important aspect of staging is cleaning the home, inside and out. A clean home makes people confident that it’s been well cared for.”

HURDLES THAT CAN ARISE, MAKES THE PROCESS

SO MUCH EASIER.

SHERRI

SCHWARTZ:

MENTALLY PREPARING YOURSELF FOR A HOME SALE

Selling a home is often an emotional journey, especially since it holds so many personal memories. To make objective decisions throughout the process, it’s crucial to emotionally detach from the property. Emotional attachment can cloud judgment when it comes to setting a realistic price, handling negotiations, and accepting offers. To approach the sale more rationally, sellers should focus on external factors such as market trends, recent comparable sales, and local inventory and demand, rather than personal feelings. Understanding the true financial value of the home helps sellers avoid overpricing based on nostalgia or sentimental value.

To emotionally prepare for selling, it’s helpful to reframe the home as an asset, not just a personal sanctuary. This shift in perspective allows sellers to make decisions that align with their long-term goals and future plans. Relying on a professional Realtor’s pricing strategy and expertise also offers valuable guidance in setting a competitive price and navigating negotiations. By embracing the sale as a step toward new opportunities, rather than a loss, sellers can move forward with clarity and confidence. Emotional detachment is key to successfully selling a home and making choices that will benefit their financial future.

A Way With Water

FROM SENIOR LIVING SALES TO SERENE WATERSCAPES:

PAUL TARASUK’S JOURNEY WITH PD WATERSCAPES

BY

Paul Tarasuk

About six years ago Paul Tarasuk decided to turn his dual passions of living a creative life and being in the outdoors into PD Waterscapes, a thriving West Hartford-based business that brings natural beauty to backyards through custom-built water features.

Specializing in everything from koi ponds to cascading waterfalls and bubbling boulders, PD Waterscapes has become a go-to business for homeowners seeking to transform their outdoor spaces into personal retreats.

Paul’s journey into the water feature industry began following a career in senior living sales and marketing.

“I realized that my work wasn’t as fulfilling as it could be,” he says. “I always loved cooking and other creative outlets and being outside. Then I went to work with a friend who owned a water garden business and that changed everything.”

He was introduced to the artistry and intricacies of ponds and water features, he says, and it was love at first sight. When his friend relocated and closed the business, Paul seized the opportunity to continue the work, building his own client base and officially launching PD Waterscapes.

CRAFTING CUSTOM OUTDOOR RETREATS

He describes his work as the perfect blend of art, science and construction. Every project he undertakes is tailored to the unique needs and visions of his clients.

“Some people move into a home with an existing pond or water feature and have no idea how to

maintain it,” he explains. “Others want to create something entirely new—a focal point or retreat in their backyard.” For these homeowners, Paul offers everything from routine maintenance and enhancements to complete redesigns.

PD Waterscapes builds a wide range of features, from small patio bowl waterfalls to expansive recreation swim ponds. One popular option is the ecosystem pond, a self-sustaining system that uses circulating water, plants and filtration to maintain an appropriate biological balance.

“Once it’s established, it becomes a vibrant, self-regulating, ecosystem, requiring minimal maintenance.”

Paul says.

For clients seeking something simpler, he offers pondless waterfalls and fountainscapes, where water flows into a hidden reservoir and recirculates—perfect for those who want the beauty and sound of running water with minimal upkeep. “These types of water features are also great for underutilized parts of the yard or areas with poor drainage.”

A PASSION FOR LEARNING AND INNOVATION

Paul credits much of his success to his dedication to learning. Early in his journey, he connected with Aquascape Inc., A pioneer and industry leader in the water feature industry, where he gained certification and hands-on experience.

“Aquascape is like the godfather of the water feature industry,” Paul says. “I am continually learning their

methodology and even worked on projects like building habitats for river otters and black bears at a wildlife refuge in Florida.” “Aquascape affords me the opportunity to work and learn alongside some of the best water feature contractors in the industry.”

This foundation has allowed Paul to merge aesthetic design with scientific principles, ensuring his features are not only beautiful but also functional and environmentally friendly. “A water feature can add biodiversity to a backyard,” he explains. “Flowing water with fish and plants attract birds, dragonflies, and frogs, creating a vibrant ecosystem.”

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Paul says he’s noticed a growing trend: families seeking to turn their backyards into extensions of their homes.

“People want outdoor spaces where they can relax, entertain, and spend time together,” he says. Water features have become a cornerstone of this movement, offering both visual appeal and practical benefits, such as reducing noise pollution, promoting stress reduction and providing a soothing backdrop with the sound of flowing water. “Water Features can also offer educational opportunities for children and time away from electronic devices.”

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Paul sees himself as both an artist and a student of nature. His ultimate goal is to create water features that replicate the beauty and tranquility of natural settings.

“The possibilities are endless,” he says. “From large boulders, beach areas and the addition of wood and other natural elements, every project is exciting and different. It’s about understanding the subtleties. I aim to make every water feature look as if it’s always been there, blending seamlessly into the environment.”

He says the cost of a waterscape is wide-ranging depending on the water feature he’s working on, with the average cost being similar to what it costs to install a small patio.

The joy for him, he says, lies in the creative process and the connections he forms with clients. “It’s a journey we go on together, turning their vision into a oneof-a-kind work of art.”

KEY SECRETS FOR A SPARKLING HOME

A SPRING KIND OF CLEAN

TIP #1 Freshen up the Kitchen

A fresh, clean kitchen impacts the entire home. To freshen up the sink, Kim says, “Run hot water while pouring in equal parts of baking soda and white vinegar through the disposal. Follow with a few drops of blue Dawn Dishwashing soap to cut away any grease buildup. Sharpen the disposal blades by running cooler water and ice through it. For a fresh smell, grind a few slices of lemon, lime or orange, removing any seeds first.”

To clean everything else in the kitchen, including counters and stainless-steel appliances, use a microfiber cloth and a solution of 2-3 drops of Dawn mixed with water.

TIP #2 Spruce up the Living Room

The living room also deserves special attention. Kim says, “Start by pulling furniture away from the walls, vacuuming and dusting behind it. Make sure you dust air vents as well. Then, pull all of the furniture cushions off to vacuum underneath and in crevices. It’s always good to rotate and fluff cushions too.”

To banish dust from your furniture, Kim suggests using a good microfiber cloth that is slightly damp instead of furniture polish, which can leave a build-up on furniture that actually attracts dust.

TIP #3 Brighten up Windows

Brighten up your whole home by intentionally focusing on the windows. “Homeowners often forget about the inside of the window,” says Kim. “They dust the blinds or the shutters, but when the blinds are pulled up, the windows often have dust or a film on them.” Kim suggests cleaning the inside of the windows on a cloudy day to reduce streaks. “A good glass cleaner with a microfiber cloth works really well. If you still have streaks, try using a little bit of rubbing alcohol.”

What’s so great about being Irish? Find out in this moving, uplifting, eyeopening musical history lesson full of charm and a bit of blarney. THE IRISH… AND HOW THEY GOT THAT WAY is an irreverent history of the Irish through the tumultuous 20th and 21st centuries through the eyes of Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Frank McCourt (Angela’s Ashes, ‘Tis, Teacher Man). McCourt’s razor sharp wit, coupled with his trademark bitter irony, and his boundless love for the Irish people are all underscored by glorious music extending all the way from the auld Irish folk ballads, through George M. Cohan’s patriotic love songs to America, World War II standards sung in movies, USOs and foxholes all over the world, and including the latest from contemporary Ireland’s U2.
