hen Mike and I started dating over 4 years ago, he had no idea what he was getting into. I had been a single mother for 12 years and the kids and I had an exclusive club that wasn’t really looking for new members. When he entered our lives he was exactly who we didn’t know we needed to make this group complete. The 4 Storey’s (as we were called) did not make the application process easy for him. My son Pace was very welcoming to the prospect of no longer being the only male member in our group. My daughter Hannah, who has a more selective taste in people, couldn’t help but be won over by him. Those two were a walk in the park compared to the toughest critic of all: The Noodle! The Noodle is Hannah’s daughter Brileigh and he had to pass her test before he was ever going to be allowed amongst the ranks. I took her swimming at his house and that didn’t impress her much. We went to parks and that didn’t do it either. It wasn’t until one evening she was staying the night that she found his guitar and wanted to play. I was downstairs at the time and when the two of them went into a particularly odd version of “ Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star “ coming down the stairs . The Noodle, at her precious 3-year-old stage was very concerned with bad words and when she wanted to express her disgust with you she would either call you an eyeball or a forehead. So with Brileigh strumming the strings and singing her little heart out and Mike doing the chords and laughing til his stomach hurt, the masterpiece “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Eyeball” was born. He aced her test. This issue is dedicated to all of you amazing west side fathers and mothers out there that work so hard at their most important career of all being a “PARENT.”

FORT WORTH BILLIARDS CONTINUES ITS SIX-DECADE RUN OF QUALITY SALES AND SERVICE ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK

ince its establishment in 1952, Fort Worth Billiards has grown to become the number one billiards and game-room design store in the Metroplex. The original owner, Loyd N. Miles, ensured the long-term success of his business when he hired two young men, Ernest Lazo and Albert Trujillo, on a part-time basis. “We started out as kids working here part time,” says Albert. “We learned the business from the ground up, working on pool cues, drilling bowling balls, or just whatever the boss asked us to do.” Ernest came on board early, in 1958, while Albert joined the team in 1978. In 1992, the pair jumped at the opportunity to buy the business. Their partnership — now in its fourth decade — draws upon a pair of unique talents and unparalleled experience to benefit Fort Worth Billiard’s loyal customer base. “We’re from two different eras, but that’s what makes our partnership click,” says Albert. “I handle the management and buying, while Ernest takes care of our customer service.” Fort Worth Billiards has grown over the years to encompass the needs of its clientele. Today, visitors to the business’s location on Montgomery Street will find a 7,000-square-foot showroom with much more than just pool tables. Fort Worth Billiards stocks everything its customers need to outfit a

home bar or recreation room, with more than 200 bar stools, pub tables, arcade games, foosball, air hockey and shuff leboard tables, and smaller items such as chess sets, dominoes and darts. A huge selection of decor allows customers to tailor the look of their room to personal tastes; in addition to wooden and metal signs, patrons can browse neon lights and a selection of novelty items. Let’s say you want to put together a game room for your home, but feel overwhelmed by the sheer scope of Fort Worth Billiards’s inventory. Never fear, as Fort Worth Billiards has made customer service the very foundation of its business. “Customer service is truly the key to our success,” says Albert. “Our team of employees are among the most experienced in the industry, from sales and retail to service and installation. We take the time to give our customers details about our products, one on one, in a no-hassle, informative sales environment.” Fort Worth Billiards success and its devotion to its customers have earned industry awards, including honors from Brunswick Billiards. In fact, the world’s top manufacturer of pool tables recently recognized Fort Worth Billiards as the top single-store dealer in its worldwide network.
“We’re very proud to have won this recognition from Brunswick,” says Albert. “The president of the company even made a special visit to present us with a $40,000 table in appreciation of the milestone.” Fort Worth Billiards’s sales team is among the best and most experienced in the industry, and can help anyone navigate the choices to outfit a game room. Of course, the service at Fort Worth Billiards does not stop with the sale. “Once you’ve picked your game room items, service is the next step in our customer satisfaction process,” says Albert. “Whether you bought a pool table from us or not, we can service most tables. Our installation crews have a combined 65 years of experience, so we’ve seen it all in terms of repairs. We also provide pool cue repairs, from re-wrapping to getting your pool cue tips replaced in minutes while you shop.” The shop even works with customers on the total design of game rooms. Simply tell them what you want and how much space you have, and Fort Worth Billiards will get you gaming in no time. “Every customer has their own unique situation,” says Albert. “With almost 65 years of customer satisfaction, we can help anyone achieve their game room goals.”

cattered over most of the world in the last four centuries, a portion of the Chinese people is separated – probably forever – from the mainland of China. ...Accused of refusing to assimilate, the overseas Chinese in fact give vivid testimony to the resilience and adaptability of their old world institutions. In America as elsewhere, the Chinese attest to the validity of pluralism. -- from Stanford M. Lyman’s foreword in Robert Seto Quan’s and Julian B. Roebuck’s book Lotus Among the Magnolias: The Mississippi Chinese ( Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 1982) A child born in 1908 in China’s Canton Province emigrated in 1922 at the age of 14, taking his younger brother, and getting them through the purgatory of Angel Island. Renamed Jimmie Joe, he migrated within the U.S., looking for jobs and caring for his sibling. He went back to China in 1927 for an arranged marriage with Won Kim. Their first child, How Mon Joe, was born in 1928, but Jimmie returned to the States. Phillip Joe’s narrative of his grandfather’s first decades here contains a recurring litany: “working multiple jobs, sending money home, and saving for the future.” After the Japanese invaded Manchuria, Won Kim took How Mon to British Hong Kong, where a daughter was born. Jimmie joined the army as a staff cook. Post-WWII, he settled in Texas. Between 1948 and 1950, with relatives, he opened the first Blue Star Inn where Camp Bowie Boulevard, Horne 14

Street and Locke Avenue meet, and another on the Weatherford Traffic Circle. In Hong Kong, How Mon married Tak Hing; their son, Phillip, was born in 1952; and How Mon came over. Anticipating more arrivals, Jimmie purchased a Ridglea Hills home for three generations to share. Won Kim joined him 28 years after their wedding. Tak Hing and Phillip came in 1958. After retirement in 1972, Jimmie traveled and hunted. Former neighbor Pam Smith Kaatz recalled Jimmie’s gift of Canadian moose meat to her mother. Not knowing how to cook wild game, she threw it out. “Mr. Joe came over and asked, ‘Mrs. Smith, how did you like the moose?’ When she answered that it was delicious, he said, ‘Then, please, tell me how you cook it. Ours was horrible.’” She told of soaking it for two days in Coca-Cola and oven-roasting it for three hours on a low setting. In a few days, he reappeared to say that the moose was delicious. “We always wondered if he was also telling a nice lie,” Kaatz said. Jimmie Joe had crossed an ocean, co-founded restaurants, and reunited his family. He faced the challenges of speaking with a cleft palate and learning English. He made many friends. He died in 1985. Kaatz’ brother, Paul “Snappy” Smith of Red River, New Mexico, credits him as “a major influence on how I have handled meeting new people my whole life.”

Untamed Beers from a Fort Worth Original PANTHER ISLAND BREWING HONORS ITS HOME CITY WITH EXCEPTIONAL CRAFT BREWS ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY KAT SWIFT
I
n 1875, a Dallas-based reporter sought to mock his city’s neighbor, and published an article in which he claimed to have seen a sleeping panther in downtown Fort Worth. The writer’s intent was to poke fun at the expense of Fort Worth’s economic downturn — a hard winter had impacted the cattle trade — and imply that the downtown was so quiet that a wild animal could sleep undisturbed. Within a couple years, Fort Worth had recovered from its slump and turned the joke on its head. The panther became a symbol of the city’s singular character, with businesses and sports teams embracing it as a mascot. Today, Panther Island Brewing pays fitting tribute to its home city and namesake feline. Located in a historic brewery on the banks of the Trinity, Panther Island Brewing has pursued a dedication to its products that never strays from an emphasis on friendship, craft and community. Owner Ryan McWhorter began his journey to beer mastery as a home brewer. With the help of a committed group of taste-testers — also known as his friends — Ryan spent years at the perfection of his craft. An apprenticeship period saw Ryan as a volunteer at Teticolas, a brewery in Dallas, where he scrubbed floors, washed kegs and soaked up as much as he could about the trade. “I knew that one day I wanted to open a brewery,” says Ryan. “Teticolas was kind enough to show me a little of their practices and the industrial brewing process. I spent a lot of time there, then bought a 10-gallon brewing system and moved into a warehouse in Haltom City.” These efforts resulted in some early buzz and awards that attracted the intention of investors. Though the location has changed and the operation has grown, Ryan’s approach to craftsmanship remains the same. In fact, he still uses his original 10-gallon system to pilot specialty beers and seasonal offerings. Panther Island has also maintained a clear awareness of the symbolic connection between good brews and good times. “Everyone here is a happy person,” says Kristi Wilson-Marks, Panther Island’s sales representative and bookings manager. “We’re all just thrilled that this gets to be our profession. The support of the community is what put us on the map, and we’re humbled and honored to have people drink our beer.” This communal spirit and love of the city is what differentiates Panther Island from its competitors. “We do our own thing and hope people like it,” says Ryan. “We love to hang out with our customers, and we try not to worry about unnecessary things and just brew good beer.” If you haven’t had a chance to experience Panther Island’s brews for yourself, the brewery has specialty beer tastings on Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m.. You can also find Panther Island Brewing’s products at bars and restaurants around the Metroplex.

BACKWOODS IS FORT WORTH'S ONE-STOP SHOP FOR LOVERS OF THE GREAT OUTDOORS ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK
I
t’s something of a cliche that men don’t like to shop. Wives, girlfriends, mothers, and daughters drag their reluctant menfolk to malls and force them to carry bags and render opinions, while the guys dream longingly of the great outdoors. The next time a shopping trip looms on the horizon, the man will struggle to fabricate an excuse; unless, of course, the trip involves a stop at Fort Worth’s Backwoods. For over three decades, this outdoor living megastore has catered to men and women who thrive on adventure and the thrill of exploration. More than just a store, Backwoods has evolved into a lifestyle center that offers demonstrations and a range of events. Tim Martin understands the Backwoods ethos better than most. The manager of the Fort Worth location, Tim has been a part of the Backwoods team since 1996. “It was my first job after I graduated from TCU,” says Tim. “It’s been a great company to work for, and is family-owned.” Backwoods first opened in Fort Worth in the late 1970s at a location off University Drive. A relocation to Camp Bowie Boulevard preceded its final move to 2727 W. 7th Street in 2008. What precipitated the move? Kayaks, of course. “Our prior location was only 5,500 square feet,” says Tim. “We decided to start carrying kayaks, so we needed more space.” Visitors to Backwoods can now explore 17,500 square feet filled with everything you need for a weekend in the wild: from tents to mountaineering gear, barefoot running shoes to fly fishing poles, Backwoods has the gear travelers want. 18
West FW Lifestyle | June 2015
“We cater to outdoor adventure of all kinds,” says Tim. “We are Fort Worth’s one-stop shop for backpacking, camping, and fly fishing, and we’re the only specialty luggage store in town.” It makes sense that a store with Backwoods’s dedication to the outdoors strives to get out into the community. Backwoods Paddlesports, located on the Trinity River near downtown, offers canoe and kayak rentals. Backwoods also sponsors tour stops for outdoor-related films on the festival circuit. This endeavor, made possible through a partnership with the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, has upcoming screenings from the Banff Mountain Film Festival. As for Father’s Day, if there’s a dad in your life whose idea of going “out” for dinner centers on a campfire, Backwoods has you covered with a range of gifts. The second-floor gear area tends to lure male shoppers, as does the fly fishing department. If you’re looking for something truly special, stop by the store on June 13th, when a Benchmade Knife representative will laser-engrave blades in honor of the holiday. A selection of Bellroy wallets always make popular gifts, as do Backwoods’s fivehour fly fishing schools. Of course, the outdoors are for everyone, and Backwoods caters to more than just a male clientele. “We’ve been voted best place for couples’ shopping by readers of a Fort Worth magazine,” says Tim. Young or old, male or female, Backwoods has what you need to enjoy the natural bounty of North Texas and beyond. In fact, the next time you stop by, you might just need an extra backpack to haul out all your gear.

Four for Father’s Day
As both fathers and professionals, these Fort Worth men set a new standard for success. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK
N
ovelist Michael Chabon, a father of four, has written that “a father is a man who fails every day.” Chabon’s sentiment — that great fathers always strive to do better — certainly holds true; but to observers, fathers who balance their careers against the needs of their children appear as laudable successes. It’s easy for a man to convince himself that the 80-hour weeks are for the good of his children. In reality, children best remember not the expensive toys or material comforts, but the sight of their fathers in the bleachers, or in the first row of the recital; they remember the time spent together in the backyard, not the gifts opened in the absence of a giver. In honor of Father’s Day, we’ve identified four Fort Worth fathers who exemplify achievement as both parents and professionals. Each of these men found different pathways to success, yet all have reached the very pinnacle of their professions. At the same time, each of these men consider their careers as secondary to a more important role: that of father to their children.

THE CHEF | JON BONNELL
The restaurant business can present a recipe for disaster when combined with the demands of fatherhood. It’s all the more impressive, then, that one of Fort Worth’s most prominent restauranteurs, Jon Bonnell, is also an exceptionally dedicated father. It doesn’t come easy, however, due to the unique demands of the kitchen. “In the restaurant business, you spend all your time working,” says Jon. “And it’s the opposite hours of everyone else. The typical schedule is from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and if you keep that schedule you can’t get to know your kids.” In order to swap the chef’s hat for that of a dedicated father, Jon had to make some creative adjustments. “Having kids changed the way I work,” he explains. “I’m still at the restaurant, but I’m conscious to take time to spend with my children. I’m a morning person, so I’m the one that gets them breakfast and gets them to school.” Having a daily breakfast prepared by the chef of Water’s and Bonnell’s restaurants is a substantial perk for Jon’s children, ages 7 and 4. Chances are, though, they appreciate less Jon’s impressive pedigree, and more the attention they get from their dad. Finding the time might be a weekly challenge, but it’s one than Jon gratefully accepts. “You always have time for the things you put first,” he says. “I work very hard, but that’s part of the lesson I want to teach: working hard is a good thing, and has value in and of itself.”
THE STRATEGIST | JOHN MURRIN PRITCHETT
For his clients, John Pritchett brings over two decades of experience that includes work at the highest levels of political campaigns. By his own admission, the financial incentives for John to stay engaged in Washington D.C. or Austin were considerable; not nearly enough, however, as compared to the rewards of fatherhood. “It was an easy decision to make,” says John of his settling down in Fort Worth. “I get to see my kids everyday, know them as people and see them grow. I take fatherhood very seriously.” John began his career in the service of then-Governor George Bush. Then he went on to work on numerous other campaign’s. When it came time to choose where to raise his kids, however, Washington was never an option. “My family has deep ties to Fort Worth, back to the 1880s,” says John. “The houses and buildings might be gone, but I know where so-and-so lived, and how they helped my grandparents. I want my children to have a sense of place and stewardship, and to teach them to love the little things.” Today, the little things include Grimm fairytales and regular trips to the museum. As an absentee father, John knows he wouldn’t have been able to offer what his own parents gave to him. “I grew up in a family with very engaged parents, and I want my children to appreciate home life,” says John. “Not the over-scheduled, regimented kind, but one of faith, wonder and joy.” CONTINUED >
FOUR FOR FATHERS (CONTINUED)
THE LEADER | COUNCILMAN ZIM ZIMMERMAN
Zim Zimmerman has lived an all-American success story. A 34year career in the defense industry included stints as a test pilot and ended with the position of vice president of product support at Lockheed Martin. Rather than rest quietly in his retirement, however, Zim has chosen to serve the city he has lived in for nearly 50 years. In 2009, he won election to the Fort Worth City Council. The father of adult children aged 45 and 46, Zim offers the perspective of decades in his advice for young fathers. “As a parent, you walk a fine line between being a dictator and being benevolent,” says Zim. “You’ve got to recognize that sometimes you need to offer tough love, and sometimes you need to honor your children and just help them.” Though Zim’s career saw him frequently on the road, he recognized early on the importance of attentiveness for successful parenting. His time at home was singularly focused on his sons, and saw the test pilot coaching soccer and leading Boy Scout troops. Activities such as these also provided the opportunity for some important lessons. “It was important to me that the boys were Scouts,” he says. “You want your children to prosper and do well in their lives, and Scouting helped teach the right set of values. I’m very proud of the fact that both of my sons made Eagle Scout.” Decades after the fact, a father still gushes over his children’s success. Perhaps more than anything else, this simple, natural pride reflects everything you need to know about what makes a great dad.

THE ARTIST | JAMES HINKLE
James Hinkle’s career in music has seen him travel the world and share stages with the likes of John Lee Hooker and Delbert McClinton. Lately, though, James has dedicated more time to a different passion: the visual arts. It should come as no surprise that this career artist should change gears; after all, it’s not the first time. The birth of his children, now aged 28 and 14, wrought a sea-change in the guitarist’s habits. “When I became a father, I came off the road,” says James. “I didn’t go out and pursue touring as much, and I decided I wanted to stay closer to home.” Since he’s picked up the paintbrush, James hews closer to home than ever before. Much of James’s art reflects the world of his experience: a life in Texas and the community of music. With James, you won’t find the insularity that many people associate with professional artists. “The world opened up for me with the birth of my children,” says James. “Your extended family and friends become so important to you. It really threw into relief the importance of community.” As for the impact of fatherhood, James’s insights follow a similar theme: “Fatherhood brings out a connection to the rest of humanity,” says James. “You start to look at people differently, namely with more patience. In the music business, you develop a hard edge. My children made me realize that there was a different way to live.”

A Nightspot Fit for Hemingway POP'S SAFARI OFFERS AN ADVENTUROUS SELECTION OF GOODS IN A ONE-OF-A-KIND ENVIRONMENT ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY KAT SWIFT
F
ew men embodied the rugged ideal better than Ernest Hemingway. A pugilist, big-game hunter and master fisherman who saw combat in World War I, Hemingway also personally liberated the Paris Ritz from Nazis, and somehow found the time to write a book or two. Hemingway — or Papa, as he liked to be called — also appreciated a good drink and a fine cigar, and one can imagine that the Nobel laureate spent many an evening in enjoyment of both. It’s easy to envy those who experienced Hemingway’s legendary bonhomie in per-
centered on travel news and sport diving, and shot at location in exotic places around the world. “We traveled all over the place, and every time we left town, somebody told us to bring them back a cigar,” says Perry. “It got to where we were bringing back a bag of cigars every trip. When we heard a rumor that we might get canceled, we joked that we would just open a cigar shop.” The rumor turned out to be unfounded, and the show continued its successful run for a number of additional seasons. The idea
son, and the enduring popularity of the man’s novels speaks as much to the appeal of his lifestyle as it does the impactfulness of his prose. If you’ve ever wanted to step into a Hemingway novel, a cozy bistro off West 7th in Fort Worth offers the next best thing. Pop’s Safari, opened in 2008 by Perry Tong and his wife Pat, offers a departure from the typical West 7th nightlife destination. Pop’s Safari has made a name for itself thanks to an unparalleled selection of wine and cigars; it’s the atmosphere of the place, however, that really sets it apart. The idea for Pop’s Safari first came to Perry in 1996, back when he and his wife produced a television series called Scuba World. The show, which became the longest-running program of its kind,
for a cigar shop stuck with Perry and Pat, though, and when cancellation finally came, they were ready. “We initially opened just the studio,” says Perry of Pop’s location in a duplex. “Now we have a gun shop on one side, and the cigar and wine shop on the other.” The gun shop, KTF & Collectibles, specializes in both new and antique firearms, and also offers antique watches, knives, art, and range of unclassifiable sundries. Once you’ve had a chance to browse — perhaps for the perfect Father’s Day gift — take a load off next door in Pop’s Safari’s comfortable lounge area. The centerpiece of the shop, the lounge is decorated in a safari theme that would do Hemingway proud. The seating arrangement encourages conversation and the shared appreciation of fine wine and cigars, and patrons
24
West FW Lifestyle | June 2015
are encouraged to order food from nearby restaurants. Pop’s Safari also offers bottled and draft beer, and a typical evening sees friendly groups engaged in lively conversation, while the knowledgeable staff ensures that everyone’s palate finds satiation. Should you want to step out for some fresh air, Pop’s Safari has an attractive outdoor patio area as well. If you bring your dad for Father’s Day, you might lose him inside the walk-in humidor. Perry’s original vision for Pop’s — as an outlet for fine cigars — remains a primary focus, and the humidor contains a rich selection at a variety of price points. As for gifts, Pop’s offers four-packs of high-quality, premium cigars at an affordable price. You can also
browse the staggering selection of wine, or get suggestions on ideal pairings. Father’s Day brings with it an uptick in Pop’s Safari’s sales, and for good reason. You’ll find no better place in Fort Worth — or anywhere, for that matter — that presents a similar selection of goods compiled with such discernment and care. At the very least, stop in, order a beer, and revel in the place’s ambience. If it’s been awhile since you revisited the works of Mr. Hemingway, you can even bring a book. Man Up with Pilates OUR SERIES CONTINUES WITH A DISCUSSION OF HOW PILATES CAN HELP MEN ACHIEVE THEIR FITNESS GOALS ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY KAT SWIFT
P
ilates has a rich and storied history, and has grown over the course of the past century to include more than 11 million practitioners worldwide. The founder of the discipline, Joseph Pilates, found inspiration in the Greek gymnastic ideal, and developed his practice in part to help condition soldiers in World War I. In the contemporary world, these masculine components of the Pilates story often get overlooked. In honor of Father’s Day, we talked to Sarah Cornett, owner of the Pilates Concept, about how Pilates continues to appeal to men. WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY REASONS THAT MEN SEEK OUT PILATES? DO THEY DIFFER FROM THOSE OF WOMEN? SARAH: There are quite a few reasons, actually. A lot of men want to cross-train for another sport that they’re involved with. Pilates provides a great balance to other activities, whether tennis, running, golf or other types of workouts. Men also seek out Pilates for rehabilitative reasons, as it helps with back pain, tightness and muscle imbalances. Women tend to start Pilates more often for a pure workout and physical fitness. Men, on the other hand, typically start to strengthen their regular routine, or alleviate pains and physical restrictions they might have. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MALE COMMUNITY AMONG PILATES PRACTITIONERS? SARAH: The male clientele has consistently grown over the last few years in a way that’s been very exciting to watch. Many of our men have been able to alleviate the tightness, aches and pains they’ve developed over the years from incorrect workouts. We’re not physical therapists, but many people do consider Pilates a post-physical therapy routine that can transform therapeutic practices into a workout. HOW WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THAT A HEALTHY, PHYSICALLY ACTIVE MAN INTEGRATE PILATES INTO HIS PREEXISTING WORKOUT ROUTINE? SARAH: I always recommend starting with a few private les-
sons. From there, new students can continue with the one-onone work, or join a group class. Most men like to incorporate two Pilates practices a week into their regular workout routines. It makes for a nice balance and positive results. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO A MAN WHO'S CURIOUS ABOUT PILATES, BUT HESITATES BECAUSE OF A PERCEPTION THAT IT'S ONLY FOR WOMEN? SARAH: Unfortunately, I’ve heard from several men who used to have this perception, and it’s true that some still do. I think that the fitness 26
West FW Lifestyle | June 2015
and health world is really starting to evolve, though, and with that comes more open-mindedness. I hope that anyone will at least try something once. What’s nice about Pilates is that a man who wants to try it won’t come into a huge class full of women. You will see other men at the studio, and the small classes allow us to cater to students’ individual needs. More men have also begun to share with their friends the benefits of Pilates, and that helps give the extra push to give it a shot.

Lessons from Dad Learned Off the Beaten Path WORDS KIM BLEVINS
M
y dad gunned the engine and we held our breaths as the truck barely scraped through the aspen trees. We were “off the beaten path” yet again. We knew it was coming when we heard Dad say, “Hmm, wonder where this road goes?” On this day, the road had narrowed and narrowed until we had a tree on either side of the truck with just a half inch to spare. We were high up in the Rocky Mountains of southwest Colorado, miles from civilization. No cell phones existed in 1978 and no one back home knew where we were to send help if needed. We were on our own. I wondered if we would have to abandon the truck and hike the 10 miles back. My mother is as steady as a rock so she sat calmly and let my dad, who’d gotten us into the mess, get us out. He did, as usual. Our Colorado camping trips were never spent in the RV parks beside the road. In fact, we mocked them as we passed by, headed to regions hitherto unknown, at least to our family. We were adventurers. These expeditions were my father’s classroom, teaching me life lessons I’ve never forgotten and still try to live. LESSON 1: NOTICE THOSE LESS TRAVELED TRAILS AND PATHS. They may lead you to the best fishing stream or view or they may end in a boring gully. What have you lost by checking it out? A little time. What do you lose by not trying? An unplanned, spontaneous joy. It’s about possibility.
LESSON 2: REMAIN CALM IN THE FACE OF CALAMITY. On this same trip, later that day in fact, my sisters and I were walking through the
34
West FW Lifestyle | June 2015
forest and I let go of a tree branch too early. It flipped into my baby sister’s face, cutting her eye. Luckily she wasn’t blinded. My parents calmly checked her and we went on. One the same trip, my middle sister pushed on the glass of the camper shell window busting it out. I do remember some stern words because we’d been told to open it with the handle. The trip went on with the help of some duct tape. LESSON 3: THE LITTLEST THINGS CAN BECOME THE BEST MEMORIES THAT BOND FAMILY. One day we’d hiked along a stream all day, come
back in the late afternoon, packed up camp and moved to a new spot. Dusk was falling as Mom simmered canned beef stew in a frying pan over the camp fire. The smell wafted and in that moment we were ravenous. We grabbed spoons and began eating out of the pan still on the campfire. We still remember it as one of the best meals we ever had. I recently took my children on a trip to Gulf Shores and all of the lessons came into play on our last day. We’d been inside all day waiting out a storm. The storm passed and it was cold on the beach. We were determined to get some beach time, so we bundled up, rolled up our pant legs and waded through the ice-cold water in the flooded parking lot. We were rewarded on the beach, not with sun and warmth but with a sky full of receding, breathtaking storm clouds and waves to make the heart pound. It was the best memory of the trip, a freezing cold, post-storm beach afternoon that we could have easily missed. Thanks, Dad.
