WESTPORT DMA'S FIRST FITNESS AND HEALTH EXPO The Westport Downtown Merchants Association held its first Fitness and Health Expo on September 12 on Main Street. Exercise classes were held outside and health and wellness companies educated consumers on ways to stay healthy and fit during these difficult times. All class spaces were 6 feet apart and attendees wore masks to ensure the event was both fun and safe! It was a great, new way for Westporters to enjoy our downtown.

WLM: Any negative repercussions to a CBD store? GC: There’s one woman near Sherwood Island who doesn’t get it. WLM: What’s the difference between CBG and, like, pot? GC: CBD. Although there is a CBG. WLM: Riiiiight. My mind was hooked on CBGB’s. GC: CBD is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid in cannabis, it won’t get you high. It’s different from the THC cannabinoid which can get you high. CBG is another less wellknown cannabinoid which may help slow down cancer. WLM: What are your popular items and what do you use? GC: Oh, our gummies are number one, then the honey, the salves, the tinctures. I use the tincture and a little bit of the bath salts for me and the baby [son Julian], and the lotion. My husband Mitchell’s skin care regime is insane. He used to spend hundreds on “high end” skincare products. Now he uses this (waves his arm toward the lotions shelves). WLM: Okay, let’s stop here. What does CBD lotion do that other lotions don’t do?
Griff, Julian, and Mitchell Conti (Photo: John Videler)
GC: (while applying lotion to his hands) Two things. First, hemp permeates layers of skin that other carriers don’t. Second, it’s good for healing scars, inflammation, and discoloration. WLM: Oh! It helps get rid of scars?? GC: Yeah. But don’t use it on open wounds. WLM: No. That… sounds painful. So, what about the tinctures and salves? GC: Franny’s uses the same highly concentrated whole plant extract in all their products, which makes it the real deal and unique to their brand. Her tinctures are for overall wellness. Use them in cooking, rub on an irritation, put them on your temples to help with a headache. While the lotion has a warming effect, salve is greasier with a cooling effect. WLM: This is actually a beautiful store. GC: Thanks! I designed it with guidance from the Franny’s team and my stepfather [Mike Pagett] who’s a local custom cabinetmaker. I didn’t want a glass-case concept, so I took it a step up, using the corporate Franny’s colors, grey and the green. Actually, this is now the look for future premium franchises. MM: I bet [Mike’s] gotten some business from these cabinets. GC: My stepfather’s gotten several kitchens out of this!

WLM: So, you were recruiter of the Year at Bradsby for starting their cannabis division. What kind of person works in cannabis? I imagine a bunch of smart hippies wearing tie-die and bandanas. GC: The cannabis industry is emerging and is beyond the point of hippies and stoners; the money always quietly flowed from a much more professional crowd. For the first few years it was a free-for-all until people realized it was a consumer product. I mean, you do have the certain person who’s attracted to parts of this industry. But we place professionals from CEOs and COOs, to scientists and engineers. These are people entering the cannabis industry from some of the most notable market leaders in the country, coming from consumer goods, retail, manufacturing and more. WLM: And why Franny’s? GC: Franny’s just felt different from the others. I was talking to a client, to recruit for a candidate they needed. This client described how they aspired to be like Franny’s. Franny created this seed-toshelf product, where they have control over quality every step of the way. I wrote her name on a post-it note. I googled it. I was intrigued by what I saw and cold called Franny and said, ‘you don’t know me but I am a recruiter for the industry and I want in.’ Listen, I love this industry and while we are a business, my real goal is to educate people about the potential of this plant. I am not in it for the money, which is why I haven’t quit my day job! Franny’s Farmacy 55 Church Lane, Westport CityLifestyle.com/Westport

and beyond. It takes architects, landscapers, stonemasons, volunteers, donors, and nice people to help fix things. PH Architects donated hours of research and renderings for a library and multi-functional space, including a colonnade designed to emulate Catherine’s outstretched arms and pavilion with a terra-cotta roof to represent her bright red hair. classes and parties thrown in pre-COVID days and their ambitious plans for the future. Jenny and her team created educational programming for elementary school kids and Sunday “Mindful for Monarchs” butterfly tagging. October sees a notso-spooky Halloween party where kids learned the importance of scary things like snakes. Christmas sees an annual gala. Each December 14 they light Catherine’s “giving tree” decorated with popcorn and other treats for wildlife to eat. Catherine’s Butterfly Party began in 2014 as a pet adoption event with free crafts and make-up for kids. The first year they hosted eight rescue organizations and 1,500 people. By 2019 the number ballooned to 28 organizations and 7,000 attendees. COVID abruptly ended these gatherings but did not diminish their spirit. Working with the housing authority, social services, and a volunteer corp, they’ve delivered over 90,000 free meals to pets of senior citizens strapped for money (in 2019 they donated 3,500 meals.) In the next few years, CVH Sanctuary plans to welcome thousands of children and families to witness how kindness enriches the lives of every living thing, from healing animals to growing vegetables to pollinating flowers and thistles.

NUMBER OF WORKOUTS REQUIRED TO BURN THE CALORIES WE IMBIBE. Or eat. We asked two popular fitness instructors for exercises we can do in a gym, at home, or al fresco; masked or maskless; and easily distanced from another’s globular inhalation zone. We also replaced Gabby’s hand weights with canned pumpkin, because not all of us have home gyms. You could also do, say, the lunges with a frozen turkey, but then we’d be advocating lunges with a frozen turkey. MO PRESTER Instructor at JoyRide, DJ, personal trainer, and a bunch of other things. Mo has pretty much elevated Westport’s passion for fitness to an entirely new level. His wit, style, and infectious energy motivates legions of residents to get fit, stay fit, and not waste their time with lousy music.

As Amanda inked Rose’s and her husband’s initials onto her wrist, I asked what else was on her bucket list. Rose paused, then said, “Actually, this is it.” When it was finished, Amanda carefully wrapped Rose’s wrist in plastic wrap. Then Rose’s granddaughter walked her carefully out of the studio and into the rest of her life. BENJAMIN Emily and Jonathan Cafasso shared with us their heartbreaking story. On July 1, 2020, Emily gave birth to a stillborn son, Benjamin, due to an undetected umbilical cord knot. Grief-stricken, they sought ways to honor his life and cope with their anguish. A family member suggested a tattoo and Jonathan recalled reading an article about Amanda Mas a few days before. They contacted Amanda and, though her schedule was full, she created an appointment for them. Amanda inked Benjamin’s name on their right arms. “Whenever we hug someone,” Emily explains, “Benjamin is in the middle of it.” Though it can’t mitigate their burden, their tattoos are a constant reminder of their blessings and of the love in their lives. According to Emily, “It’s a story of great loss and great love.” Of these stories, Amanda admits “It’s an emotional job. I have to call my Mom a lot.” Editor’s note: While shooting this story, our photographer, Jerri, finally folded and got one for herself. A camera, to commemorate her career and the decision to open her first studio on Riverside Avenue in Westport. CityLifestyle.com/Westport

+ THINGS TO DO
The Finger Lakes region is brimming with safe, socially-distant fall activities. We kicked off our first full day by exploring Watkins Glen State Park, which recently underwent a $6.5 million renovation. The park has 19 waterfalls and miles of hiking trails. Make sure you wear a good pair of boots! A winery or two has to be on your Finger Lakes itinerary. We had the opportunity to tour Lakewood Vineyard. Afterwards we enjoyed tasting their award-winning wines while soaking in the vineyard’s stunning countryside views. Apple-picking is another must while you’re there. The Finger Lakes are known for their orchards and Reisinger’s Apple Country did not disappoint. Only a 10-minute drive from downtown, Reisinger’s is the perfect place to pick your own apples. Make sure you grab some of their fresh made apple cider donuts before you leave.

+ THINGS TO SEE Spend an hour or two exploring Watkins Glen’s charming downtown. As you stroll down main street you’ll find beautiful murals on the sides of buildings that highlight the town’s ties to racing. Perhaps the most well-known spot on Seneca Lake is the Seneca Lake pier with its iconic red harbor station. You might even see some wildlife -- one morning I’m sure I spotted an otter!
+ WHERE TO STAY We stayed at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel, a four-diamond property right on Seneca Lake. The property’s central location to everything made our time in Watkins Glen effortless. The hotel’s staff were extremely attentive, friendly, and took all necessary safety measure. We enjoyed our meals outdoors at the hotel’s lake-front restaurant, the Blue Pointe Grille (indoor seating is an option). If you’re looking for some good lunch places around town, we enjoyed our sandwiches and wraps from Holy Cow Deli. Additionally, some suites at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel have kitchens if you’re more comfortable cooking your own meals. If you decide to stay at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel like we did, I’d recommend a lake-view room with a balcony to get the full Finger Lakes experience. Our rooms had huge Jacuzzi tubs, which we thoroughly enjoyed after a day of outdoor activities.
