Editor’s Letter

Introduction to Art 101 “The aim of art,” wrote Aristotle, “is to represent not the outward appearance of things but their inward significance.” Art. What a beautiful gift brought to us by some very gifted people. I can only dream of being so talented and so ably telling stories with a paint brush and an imagination that knows no bounds. My introduction to art was in the classroom of Elizabeth DeWolfe at All Saints Episcopal Day School … more than a few years ago. (Speaking of using your imagination.) Slides of the most amazing art ever made are still fixed firmly in my mind. We visited museums and put our own abilities to the test. It was an experience I’ll forever treasure. Now fast forward 20 years later when I started working for the Main Street Arts Festival. I had no idea what I was entering into, but it turned out to be an opportunity of a lifetime. As an assistant sponsorship coordinator, I got a crash course in art and event education. This festival is a juried show in which I was blessed beyond belief to be a part. I met some of the greatest people I will ever know. The Event Management Team personnel are people who started with this festival from its inception. All of them have full time jobs elsewhere, but each year take their vacation to bring this occasion to Fort Worth. I’ll be back there again this year, April 10-13. This is truly a joy, four days to celebrate the genius of the creative. It’s also a chance to think and be thankful for our most generous philanthropists who have put world renowned museums in our city.

It is said that the only people who don’t know about Fort Worth’s great museums are the citizens themselves. We hope this edition will in some small way, for a brief time, be our part in thanking the artists who have so willingly shared their gifts. In this issue of West FW Lifestyle, we introduce you to James Hinkle. What an artist! Fort Worth’s own Renaissance man is equal parts musician and master of the brush and canvas.

What more is there to say about Bo Powell? What an interesting character he is in our community. A muralist, Powell has left his mark all over town. This magazine’s journey has enabled me to visit many of our community’s businesses, including the galleries and the beautiful boutique enterprises on Camp Bowie. Did you know the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History features opportunities to have dinner under the stars of the Noble Planetarium? We didn’t either, until now. I

t might not have been love at first sight, but there was definitely intrigue when the fate of two high school students intersected in the hallways of Arlington Heights High School. “He was a sophomore and I was a senior,” says the former Claire Anne Bloxom. “He had transferred to Heights as a sophomore from a private school, and I remembered hearing from my private school friends that ‘Law Armstrong was coming to Heights.’ “I remember thinking, ‘Who is Law Armstrong?’ because, obviously, it’s a pretty cool name that stands out. We never spoke to each other. Senior girls don’t talk to sophomore guys! But I sure never forgot him or his name.” Today, she is Claire Bloxom Armstrong, wife to Allen Lawrence Armstrong Jr., that same guy she met at Heights, Law Armstrong. The two found each other again at the wedding of a mutual friend in 2010 and were married recently in Austin at the Lakeway Resort and Spa overlooking Lake Travis. Claire wore a simple, ivory silk charmeuse mermaid-style strapless gown by Nicole Miller. Her diamond hoop earrings set in 24 carat gold complemented her grandmother’s beautiful diamond necklace also set in 24 carat gold, and she walked down the aisle in canary yellow pumps by Nina. Serving as matron of honor was the bride’s sister, Lauren Bloxom Stohlman of Dallas. Bridesmaids were Kathryn Hilsman Adickes of Aspen, Colo.; Meredith Manly Brown of Corona del Mar, Calif.; Molly Jane 10 West FW Lifestyle | April 2014

Cain of Washington, D.C.; Megan Buxton Norrell of Fort Worth; Katie Lowrance Oudt and Caroline Keith Settle, both of Dallas; and Jessica Lee Stevens of Vail, Colo. The house party included Ashleigh Shae Cannon, Rylie Erin Charles and Emily Eagle Clarke, all of Dallas. Serving as best man was Norman Ballou Robbins III of Fort Worth. Groomsmen were David Bradford Bloxom, brother of the bride, of Oxford, Miss.; Timothy Karl Stohlman, brother-in-law of the bride, of Dallas; and Charles Townes Clemons, Robert Lawrence Henry, Travis James Hopkins, Walker James Meadows, Gavin Perry Wallace and Bryan Guitar Witherspoon, all of Fort Worth. Ushers included Benjamin Thomas Cain, James Rowland Murphy III and Roger John Schuler III, all of Fort Worth. Claire works in public relations for the PAVLOV Agency. Law is a landman for XTO Energy. After a honeymoon in Antigua, the couple moved into their new house in Fort Worth. “Never in a million years would I have guessed I’d end up marrying Law Armstrong,” Claire says. “I’m a very lucky gal.”

Much More Than Pub Grub Brunch at Oscar’s Pub becomes Sunday destination Article Randy McGuire | Photos Kat Swift

I

magine my surprise when on my drive home on Sunday from morning church services I noticed the parking lot of one of my favorite watering holes packed with cars. What is going on at Oscar’s Pub at 11 a.m. on a Sunday? Brunch, that’s what. What started as Rive Macedo and Kat Swift making breakfast tacos and enchiladas for regulars as a perk for bellying up for an afternoon pop has turned into a regular menu. And a good one, at that. Owner Robbie Turman has grown the menu to include 12 allyou-can eat items at $10.99 with bottomless mimosas and poinsettas for an additional $4. As the weather turns from winter to spring (maybe?), Oscar’s patio presents an appealing opportunity for al fresco dining. So, what better place to park on a cold Sunday midmorning … if you can find a spot.

Breakfast enchiladas What’s in them: Stacked corn tortillas layered with a creamy, green tomatillo sauce with your choice of pork carnitas, chorizo or bacon, medium egg, cheese, salsa verde and purple onion and served with home fried potatoes and refried beans. What Randy says: “Creamy layered goodness with the best chorizo served fresh by Rive by way of the Mi Tierra meat market.”

Chilaquilles What is it: Fresh made chips smothered in a medium fried egg, your

choice of meat (pork carnitas, chorizo or bacon), fresh salsa verde, cheese and served with home-fried potatoes and refried beans. 12 West FW Lifestyle | April 2014

“If Tostitos and Frito’s had a love child, this would be it. A chip off the old block. (Rimshot, please.)” What Randy says:

Toasted breakfast sandwich What is it: Toasted wheatberry bread filled with medium fried egg, bacon and sharp cheddar cheese What Randy says: “A dipping bowl of gravy is made available, but this sandwich stands on its own in terms of flavor. But, as a red-blooded Texan, I highly recommend the gravy.”

Scoring Big Landon Russell’s work ethic on the NCHS court and in the classroom lands him at Yale in the fall Article Kristin Peaks | Photography Provided

L

andon Russell’s ability on the basketball court has always stood out to both the casual observer and those in the know, but it’s what he does in the classroom and as the model of servant leadership that have made him special. A combination of the three have landed the Nolan Catholic High School senior shooting guard and captain on the basketball team an opportunity grow at Yale University. After graduation in May, Russell will be headed off to the exclusive grounds in New Haven, Conn., with its traditions and esteemed list of alums to play basketball and study. “I chose Yale because it is a very well respected academically and athletically,” Russell says. “It gives me the opportunity to go to one of the best schools in the country, as well as play Division I basketball.” One might be inclined to be a good athlete or a good student, but it doesn’t just happen. You have to work at it. And that is Russell’s not-so-secret to success. Russell was introduced to basketball at age 4 by his mother, Karen, through a clinic nearby the family home. The game was as immediately appealing to this 4-year-old as Legos might to another. By the time he was in middle school, the sport had become a passion. He practiced almost daily, shooting and practicing skills with his dad, as well as Select Coach Aaron Smith. 14 West FW Lifestyle | April 2014

That same work ethic and dedication were also the reasons Russell has excelled in the classroom, too, through the same hard work and dedication to get better in the classroom. The priority over the years has been his grades and it’s always been important to him to work hard in the classroom. He not only has supportive parents, but his coaches are his role models as well. They have both pushed him to reach his full potential. “We try to instill in our players the desire to create and follow the right set of priorities,” says Steve Prud’homme, Russell’s coach at Nolan. “We demand a strong work ethic. Landon sets a great example. “His academics are top-notch. He outworks everyone on the court and is able to be a confident, yet humble person. And that is the formula for success.” His father, Greg, had always suggested that he play for an Ivy league school, but Russell never thought seriously about it until he participated in a basketball camp at Yale after his sophomore year. One week after he got home, the phone started ringing. Yale wanted Landon Russell. Over the next year, the coaches kept pursuing. He went back for the basketball camp after his junior year and they offered him a spot on the team during camp. Without hesitation, Landon accepted. He immediately gave them his commitment, even though there were other offers out there. Russell chose Yale over a number of others interested in him as a student and basketball player. He’ll begin his new journey in the fall. It’s the place he wants to be and where he, too, can share with his new classmates and teammates his formula for success. Lucky for them.

Suitable for Framing Bobby Harris’ journey in the art business is one of fine art found Article Matt Smith | Photography Kat Swift

B

obby Harris left Weatherford College in 1991 with an art degree. He was looking to take any road, traveled, less traveled or otherwise. Like so many others, at age 21, he didn’t know what he would do, but he knew what he wanted to do: Find a livelihood in art. As anyone who has lived a little knows, that’s way easier said than done. A chance meeting, though, Bobby Harris has found his way changed his life. as an artist and entrepreneuer. One day his mother, who was the manager of the 6333 building on Camp Bowie, saw a “help wanted” sign at Suitable for Framing. So, she took some of her son’s art pieces to show Owner Cheryl McBride. McBride told her to have him come by for a chat. He did. She hired him on the spot. This was the beginning of Harris’ journey. Knowing nothing of the business, Cheryl took him under her wing and taught him all he needed to know. Only a few years later, he was running the business fulltime when McBride’s husband was transferred to Atlanta and wanted to sell the business. 16 West FW Lifestyle | April 2014

Harris and the McBrides had talked in the past about buying the business with them, but the price was beyond his means but by 1996, the price had changed. McBride told Harris that she had been fulfilled in seeing him grow professionally, spiritually and emotionally, and that she and her husband had prayed about it and would like to make him another offer: The business would be his for $10! In disbelief, Harris didn’t feel worthy of this offer. He talked to family and said some prayers of his own. On Jan. 1, 1997, he became the new owner of Suitable for Framing for $10. Since then he has brought his own artistic touch to all of his work. His most memorable piece was a lady that had brought in a child’s drawing to be framed. As it turned out, the artwork was her son’s last before passing away. It’s a lesson he has never forgotten and Suitable for Framing has modeled his philosophy: 3815 Southwest Blvd The value is in what the piece Fort Worth 76116 means to you. 817-735-9558 So he lives by the philosoSuitableForFramingFW.com phy that “Regardless of the or like on Facebook value, if it means something to you it’s priceless.”

geniuses among us

Meet local artists, James Hinkle and Bo Powell

Article John Henry | Photos Kat Swift

F

ort Worth is rich with artistic and creative talent. We are pleased to feature the work of two of those treasures: James Hinkle and Bo Powell.

James Hinkle Fort Worth native James Hinkle is known as a blues musician, but he’s also a painter. The first impression created by Hinkle’s nuevo impressionism is obvious. There on the canvas are the visions of a mind always busy at work, deliberating and analyzing, transforming into an interpretive piece of work what his brain sees. It’s a lot like peeling an onion, in layer after layer. There is much to see at first glance, much more lies beneath the surface. Much like the piece he crafted for West FW Lifestyle magazine. It takes more than one look to understand that this abstract piece tells us about ourselves on the West Side. There’s a flow and volume to it. 18 West FW Lifestyle | April 2014

“Much like a community and society, we are intermingled some way,” says Hinkle, known by many others around town as Blues Maestro. “We may not know it or see it, but that’s a fact of life. Our lives intermingle and touch each other.” The painting also depicts symbols of Fort Worth and the West Side, such as the horns of Molly The Longhorn and the red of the bricks of Camp Bowie. It’s merely part of Hinkle’s next step in what he calls “evolving as an artist,” a never-ending process for this creator.

“Each piece represents a time and place in your life but you constantly learn from it. If you get caught …and you stick to a formula, you won’t grow.”

The 56-year-old has been playing music for 40 years. His first paying gig was at the Hip Pocket Theatre as merely a teen, a 16-year-old high school student from Lake Worth. His home is like walking a gallery, the subjects hitting every part of American life: There’s Leon Russell, golfer Bobby Jones following through on a swing, a contemplative Van Cliburn and actor Nicolas Cage. “Each piece represents a time and place in your life,” Hinkle explains, “but you constantly learn from it. If you get caught in a scenario in which you get really good from doing landscapes, and you stick to a formula, you won’t grow.”

Bo Powell Bo Powell’s life in art has been a lot like his late night with Willie Nelson so many years ago. Sitting late night with Waylon Jen-

nings, Sammi Smith and Willie at the Continental Inn in east Fort Worth, the group started brainstorming. “Waylon said, ‘I’ve got an idea for a song,’” Powell recalls. “We said, ‘Well, what is it?’ And he said, ‘she’s a good hearted woman, in love with a good timin’ man.’ We elaborated on that for a while. Got to brainstorming.” Powell contributed an idea. He likes the night life, the bright lights and good timin’ friends. But when the party’s over she’ll welcome him home again. “I didn’t think anything about it until the record came out,” Powell continues, in the slow drawl familiar to everyone who knows him. The original 45 credits Bo Powell as one of five writers. “Shortly after it hit the stands, Willie told me he’d buy me out for $500. That’s not bad for about three minutes of work.” continued >

GENIUSES among us (continued)

Powell has been practicing his form of art in much the same way, in anonymity, for the better part of six decades. But he’s left his mark all over the city. Murals crafted by the hands of this 70-something dot the landscape, and they all tell a story. The walls of the Paris Coffee Shops, Lola’s and the inside of two Fred’s Cafe locations have all been touched by Powell’s handiwork. It’s been a lifelong vocation. Powell’s first mural was out at a ranch in West Texas. That first one included a chuck wagon and a ranch house, much like the one at the original Fred’s. “I’ve always been a railroad guy,” says Powell. “Both of my grandfathers worked for the railroad. I remember my dad took me to the T&P Depot and it’d be dark and here came some passenger trains. 20 West FW Lifestyle | April 2014

Dad would hold him up, and he knew what he wanted to do.” That’s the focus of one of his most recent work, Fred’s North. They wanted a mural, but left the creation and concept up to him. “I said, well, you’re sitting right here next to the national headquarters of Burlington National Santa Fe.” Powell’s knows trains well, having been an engineer for years for a few railroads. He derives his inspiration from a number of other pursuits, too. Powell was for a time a disc jockey for WBAP in the early 1960s. His life story could take up a week of afternoons. “If anybody has ever done it, Bo has,” says his mural companion Kathy Moynihan, who works with him on a number of mural projects.

Financial Fitness

Find Big Savings in Your Kitchen Article Maureen Welsh

M

ost grocery articles talk about saving strategies in the grocery store. But those savings can be wasted if you don’t take care of your groceries once you get them home. And the waste can be significant. The average American household throws away $2,000 in food every year. About two-thirds of household waste is due to food spoilage. The other one-third occurs after the food is prepared. The following practical tips will help you avoid waste and make the most of your groceries at home. Get organized. Food waste occurs when it is not used. By organizing your pantry and refrigerator, you will see what you have and can utilize those ingredients. Arrange earlier expiring items in front of those with longer expiration dates; use those expiring first. Similarly, with items that spoil quickly, such as produce, put them front and center where you can see them. This will remind you to use them before they spoil. Store food properly. Lack of proper storage can accelerate food spoilage. For example, sandwich bread is best stored in your pantry, rather than your refrigerator, because cool air dries it out. To find out how to properly store your perishable items check out FoodSafety.gov. Utilize your freezer. You can cut waste and over-preparing by dividing your food into manageable portions. For instance, if you purchase 10 pounds of meat, portion out what your family will use per meal and freeze until you are ready to use. If you have left-overs, freezing them is also a great money-saver. Just be sure to label your freezer items properly by identifying the contents and date it. Then put them in a conspicuous location so they are not forgotten. Use recipe websites. The $.99 eggplant seemed like a good idea at the time, but now you aren’t sure what to do with it. Don’t let

it become a produce casualty. There are many websites, such as AllRecipes.com, that provide quick, tasty recipe options. Simply enter the ingredients that you have in the search engine and it will provide you a variety of recipes. Don’t throw it out (yet). Except on certain baby food, “use by” or “best before” dates are created by the manufacturer to indicate peak freshness. They are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and there is no law precluding the sale of food that is past the expiration date. Therefore, many of those items you have been tossing are still acceptable to eat. StillTasty.com is a great resource to determine when to eat and when to toss. Donate it. If you can’t use it, donate it. Food pantries and shelters are happy to accept non-perishable items and some, such as Shawnee Community Services, will accept items past the freshness dates as long as they are unopened. Saving on your grocery budget does not end when you leave the grocery store. The next time you bring home groceries, have a plan for storing and preparing your food, and use available resources to help you get the most out of your purchased items. These small changes can have a big impact on your bottom line. Maureen Welsh is the founder of My Strategic Shopping, a mobile price match grocery saving program. Stonewater Cove Resort & Spa This oasis in the Ozarks tops our list of favorite getaways for spring and summer vacation plans

Article Kendra Mathewson Photography Provided by Stonewater Cove

W

ouldn’t it be nice to get away from it all anytime you want, without having to travel half a world away? I used to live on a fairly remote island in the Caribbean – one that took three planes, a 30-minute ferry ride and Jeep taxi bouncing along a remote road to reach. People traveled there from all over the world to experience this high-end resort and, no question, it was a place one could escape the noise, find peace, and a change of pace. It was well worth the long, hard trip. Yet, what if I told you about another such place more easily within reach? One that feels as if it were custom built just for you, designed to give you or your family exactly what you want in a vacation? So it is with Stonewater Cove Resort and Spa. A few major interstates, followed by state highways and 12 miles of winding country road and you’re there – nestled in along Table Rock Lake in the Ozarks, surrounded by the Mark Twain National Forest. Before we go any further, set aside every stereotype evoked when you hear the word, “Ozarks.” Stonewater Cove redefines the Ozark experience. It’s the best of everything, artfully created in a retreat that honors nature, Missouri and Midwest life, and celebrates it all. It is pure wilderness, pure luxury, and absolute perfection. And it’s well worth the short drive. 24 West FW Lifestyle | April 2014

A Resort of Contrasts.

From the moment you pass through the hand-hewn wooden fence, it’s clear someone has prepared this place just for you. This is not a commercial property owned by a big company that slapped up a building and called it “vacation destination.” In contrast, the Bond family, out of everything they love and enjoy, spent 10 years carefully creating and crafting this beautiful retreat in the wilderness of the Ozark Mountains on the peaceful Table Rock Lake. Jim and his wife, Ruth, were optometrists and business owners from Iowa who brought their kids up skiing, hiking and adventuring. Like artists, they saw the beauty of this place and its potential, and their transformation helps visitors appreciate it in a new way. Their children are all involved in the business, and son, James, helped build much of it and now runs it as General Manager. Stonewater Cove is a welcome contrast to this hustle-bustle world in which we live: surrounded by more than 400 acres of woods; overlooking an expanse of ever-smooth water; keeping company with the birds, breeze and trickling streams flowing throughout the developed property. Not only is it a contrast to our lives, it is a place that offers families, couples or individuals a plethora of contrasting options, to create a custom designed vacation all your own.

All things to all people: A wilderness adventure or pure pampering.

The resort boasts only 25 guest studios and suites, with a maximum capacity of 100 guests. It occupies just 25 acres of the 400 acres owned by the Bonds’, making it small enough to explore, yet big enough that you can go forever without seeing someone. Twenty-five miles of trails allow you to experience nature all alone, without sharing the trail or bumping into others passing by, as is often the case at popular national parks. At Stonewater Cove, the trail is your own, and the world belongs to you. It’s the perfect place for a combination of people who want different things from their vacations. If you’re the outdoor type, you can enjoy a hike, a 4-wheel ride, zip lining, kayaking, fishing, swimming, boating and skiing. In contrast, if you prefer to be pampered, you can read a book for hours by the pool or enjoy a long massage at the Treehouse Spa. At Stonewater Cove, the phrase, “all things to all people,” takes on real meaning. Everyone will be perfectly happy. Luxury Accommodations and Complete Concierge Service.

Imagine walking the hand-laid stone path to your room, surrounded by the stereophonic sounds of stream water trickling through stones placed to perfection along your way. Ancient trees – black oak, hickory, maple and cypress – stand tall all around you, the sparkling water of Table Rock glistening and glimmering through the leaves as they dance in a gentle breeze. Imagine the blanket of peace that wraps

Julia McEntirE attorney Counselor at law, Family law

itself around you as you walk up the steps to what feels like your own personal, rustic cottage in the woods, put the key in the lock with its swinging metal cover, and push open the heavy solid wood door with its iron-barred speakeasy, like a Hobbit door. Enter your one-of-a kind lakefront suite, custom designed by Ruth Bond with the care she gives her own homes. Marvel over every detail hand crafted by local artisans, the best of Ozark craftsmanship – chic not cheesy. Dining from sun-up to sundown is an experience in itself, reminiscent of the best of home cooking or 5-star dining. The ever-changing menu is designed to meet your needs – from light to hearty breakfasts; lunch served poolside, in the lounge, or boxed for enjoying while on the lake or in the forest; and dinners from gourmet barbeque to 5 course meals, all prepared by Executive Chef Joseph Meitl. All this, coupled with complete concierge service – led by a small staff with a heart to serve others– no question, Stonewater Cove is a luxury resort you’ll visit again and again. Get Away From It All.

So, if you want to get away from it all, before you consider traveling half a world away, consider Stonewater Cove Resort and Spa. Even from a bird’s eye view it is a luxury resort that is so well integrated into nature, it is almost invisible. Nestled in the woods, overlooking the water. This could be the place your family or you as a couple or individual make some of the best memories you’ll have to share forever. StonewaterCove.com.

BROWDER CAPITAL by Lisa Allen

T

raditional hedge funds are out of reach for many investors. Because most hedge funds require a net worth of tens of millions of dollars, with minimum investment amounts in the same range, the option has typically been relegated to a select group of sophisticated investors. Patrick Browder and Robert Sunleaf of Browder Capital are set on changing that. “We started this firm in January, 2013, and we’ve had roughly one million dollars per month in new investor capital. People see the difference and the true value that we offer,” says Browder, President and Chief Compliance Officer. “We’ve taken the four weaknesses of traditional hedge funds and turned those around to advantages in our strategy,” says Browder. “I specifically thought of my family as we were developing this innovative approach. Our goal is that everyday investors are able to take advantage of hedge funds in a way they’ve not been able to in the past.” Browder is referring to trading strategy, transparency, liquidity and structure when he talks about the weaknesses inherent in traditional hedge funds. Old school hedge funds are notoriously secretive; investors receive information only once per quarter, usually in the form of updates and summaries. Traditional hedge funds also have a different

28 West FW Lifestyle | April 2014

structure, and investors usually have to commit for a certain length of time, whether they are happy with the progress or not. With Browder Capital’s hedge fund, clients can log on to the firm’s website and see real-time updates of their portfolios. Browder and Sunleaf, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, actively manage each portfolio—meaning they are constantly trading—but it’s the client who retains ownership of the investment. “Clients control their own accounts,” says Sunleaf. “We trade on their behalf, but we cannot make withdrawals or deposits on their behalf. We also allow clients the option of daily liquidity, meaning that if they’ve invested and haven’t seen the results they want, they can close their account at any time.” A native Texan who was born and raised in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, Browder is passionate about keeping money in the community. Browder Capital is purposefully headquartered in Fort Worth because of the stable economy, and because Browder and Sunleaf are certain that it will be one of the fastest growing economies in the next decade. “Money should never leave Fort Worth and go to Wall Street,” Browder says. “We are the youngest hedge fund managers in the area, but we are also outperforming many of the money managers in large

firms. We’re extremely blessed that within the first year of being in business, that we’ve been so successful.” And make no mistake; there is strategy behind the hedge fund philosophy at Browder Capital. Browder writes proprietary algorithms that provide information and insight to their trading moves, but the actual trades are all done by Browder and Sunleaf so they can bridge the gap between long and short term investment strategies. Both Browder and Sunleaf knew from the time they were kids that they wanted to pursue finance as a career. Browder says he remembers researching quotes in The Wall Street Journal with his father; they would read the paper together to follow different stocks. Sunleaf says that even before he bought his first stock he had an interest in investing. “I’ve been drawn to this for as long as I can remember,” says Sunleaf. After earning a degree in Finance from Xavier University, where he was a managing member of the Student Investment Fund and responsible for directing a portion of university endowments, Sunleaf completed internships in Pasadena with a start up hedge fund and an internship with a large, nationwide retail brokerage firm before accepting a position at a Fortune 100 Company. He first worked in supply chain management and logistics and, in his second year, moved to California when the company acquired a competitor. He worked on the acquisition in accounting and integration. It was at this Fortune 100 Company that he met Browder. Browder accepted a position there after graduating from University of Oklahoma with a degree in Finance and then earning a MBA from University of Pittsburgh. After being recruited to University of Pittsburgh, he worked with Professor Kuldeep Shastri, who he says was the first professor who truly helped him understand not just the information presented in class, but how that information mattered in the real world. “He worked with us in off hours, not just in class, so we truly understood the real world impact of derivatives trading, which fuels a lot of our growth today,” says Browder. “We worked together all year but he didn’t come to class the morning of the final exam, and we knew something was wrong. He died of a heart attack. To this day, I dedicate what I do to him, and I am so grateful for his influence in my life.” Browder says that the stagnant economy after he graduated from University of Pittsburgh meant there were huge lines of experienced

traders vying for a limited number of opportunities, all with more experience than him. “I decided to use it as a time to self-assess,” he says, “and I realized that the one thing I was missing was experience in a public corporation. That experience is vital, because understanding how corporations aggregate and report information is essential to making successful trades now.” Browder calls his time at the Fortune 100 Company a three year long research project, where he learned how fast corporations can move and learned how to read between the lines when corporations release information to the public. They both say that they didn’t know what type of business they would eventually build, but they both knew that eventually they would work together. “Robert is brilliant, and he’s extremely detail oriented,” says Browder. “We work perfectly together, and without him we wouldn’t be where we are now.” Both also thrive on the challenge and complicated nature of hedge fund investing. Browder says that people called him crazy, leaving a well-paying and stable position to open a new firm. He says that that he knew he was taking the biggest risk that first year, but it wasn’t enough of a deterrent to stop him because ultimately, working inside a corporate structure just didn’t keep his interest. “I am a problem solver,” he says. “Now, there’s always something that piques my attention and keeps my interest. There is always research and analysis to do, algorithms to write and new stocks to trade.” Sunleaf agrees, saying that it’s the complexity of derivative trading that he loves so much. “There is so much opportunity in derivatives,” he says, “and what’s really interesting is that what we do allows us to make money on securities whether those stocks go up or down. It’s flexible, and it moves fast. It changes every day. The nature of derivative dictates that not only does the strategy have to be right, but the timing has to be spot on.” “Everything we do comes back to our motto,” says Browder, “which is ‘fundamentally driven, technically executed.’” We study, analyze and use what we’ve learned in our past experiences, then put that into action to drive returns. Parting Thoughts

Oscar, I Miss You Already Words Kat Swift

I

know it’s been a month, but this is an arts issue so indulge me. As a self-described movie nut, I make the Academy Awards an event at my house with all production and choreography of a Hollywood thriller. Friends and family gather for a festive dinner and dessert for the annual spectacle and red carpet theater. It’s also interactive. Every year, each of us fills out an Oscars ballot, our predictions on who will win. (There may or may not have been a little cold, hard American dollars on the line in the past.) With it all wrapped up, I am still left wanting more. Why? The 2013 movie pool was menial, at best, though the diamonds in the rough shined bright among their competition. The majority of the best picture nominees were released late in the year, just in time for awards season, so it was a mad dash for me to see them all, which has become more difficult, since the pool of best picture nominees was widened from five to 10 in 2010. I filled out my Oscar ballot as I do every year. But this year there were no wagers, so I chose a few with my heart instead of my “I know betters.” In the end, I picked 17 correctly out of 24. And in my house of eight ballot participants, my 10-year-old daughter came in second with 12 correct. Her method: “I just checked ‘Gravity’ if it was nominated.” This proved to be a judicious choice because it won seven Oscars, shutting out “American Hustle.” That is where my disappointment comes in. Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams losing both Best Actress categories. “American Hustle” was, in my opinion, completely domineered by the women. I left that movie in astonishment of what I had seen them accomplish. Who knew Amy Adams had that potential in 34 West FW Lifestyle | April 2014

her? And move over, Julia Roberts, there is a new “America’s Sweetheart” in town. Jennifer Lawrence is the “it girl” right now and not just because of her raw talent, but because she is just so darn captivating, due to her over abundance of charm and hilarity. She does not appear to act like the rest of the Hollywood elite, and I hope she stays that way. You’ll get ‘em next year, Jen. (I call her “Jen,” because we are cool like that.) Now let’s move on to one of my favorites, “Dallas Buyers Club.” What a movie! My living room erupted with boisterous cheers when Texan Matthew McConaughey won the award for best actor. Perhaps a smidge of Texas pride was flowing, as well. All right, All right, All right, indeed. McConaughey was downright incredible in “Dallas Buyers Club,” which also happens to be the best film I saw in 2013. It is an inspiring true story. On another note, I think the McConaughey’s weight loss had nothing to do with his win. It was some perilous dedication to his craft, but his acting put that award in his hand, no doubt about it. So, now it’s on to 2014. One of the movies I am most looking forward to is “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” a new film from the incomparable Wes Anderson. It is about the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the great wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The cast is first rate, including stars such as Bill Murray, Jude Law, Harvey Keitel, Willem Dafoe, Adrien Brody, Edward Norton, Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson and many more. Let the debate begin about which is 2014’s best picture.
