Gardening for the Senses CASA of Tarrant County fostering help West Side Staple Michael Thompson
Publisher’s Letter
How Does Your Garden Grow? I
n this issue we are exploring our green thumbs. Personally, I am the angel of death when it comes to gardening. I had to consult my childhood friend, Scott Carrell, who deals with this on a daily basis (he owns SCL Landscape).
I told to Scott that I wanted to talk a little gardening in my letter. After he ceased his hysterical laughter we got down to it. He explained to me that it’s all about having a plan laid out for your vision. He says you have to start with the soil and then he said “compost compost compost,” because that is the best amendment for any soil type, which is the base for what you are planting. Most garden centers can help you with smaller jobs but when you want to have worry-free work with a guarantee, call a professional. I like worry-free, and its probably in the best interest of the local flora if let the local pro handle it. Thanks Scott. In this issue you will meet some of the west side’s bright flowers. Lisa McConnell, the genius behind some of the most beautiful jewelry in town. D.D. Holmes and CASA of Tarrant County who offer help and hope to foster children. West Fort Worth’s very own Michael Thompson, who is our staff pick for his food at the Fort Worth Food and Wine Festival kickoff event at Billy Bobs.

The Polar Club Wants You Freezin for a Reason
Step into The Polar Club’s cryosauna where your body will be completely enclosed from the neck down. Your body (except your head) is then exposed to sub-zero temperatures for up to three minutes. The sudden burst of cold dry air is a surprisingly comfortable experience, but has a dramatic effect on the body. Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities by inducing responses on three levels: the circulatory system, energy meridians and the nervous system. Numerous clinical studies have been conducted that focus on this as a treatment for pain and inflammation from sports injuries, rheumatoid arthritis, skin conditions, fibromyalgia, and multiple sclerosis just to list a few. This is the only therapy known to evoke such a powerful, positive and holistic response. Although WBC was developed in Japan decades ago, European scientists perfected the treatment and brought it to the U.S. where it is widely accepted by Dr. OZ, Olympic trainers, and professional sports organizations such as the Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Better Hearing Month With more than 50 million Americans suffering from its effects, hearing loss is now the third most common health problem in the country today, behind only arthritis and heart disease. “The myth regarding hearing difficulty is that it is associated with the normal aging process. However, hearing loss is typically a reflection of past noise exposure and/or a family history of hearing loss. Further, more than half of all hearing impaired persons are younger than 65,” said Diane Blaising, Au.D., Doctor of Audiology and owner of Cityview Audiology. “Sadly, too many people either do not recognize that they are having hearing difficulties, or do not want to admit their difficulties due to preconceived notions or social stereotypes.” Because not seeking treatment can have long-term negative effects on communication and cognition, Dr. Blaising wants to remind people that help is available. “With the month of May being recognized as the 83rd Annual National Better Hearing Month, I want to encourage people in the community to seek answers to their questions about hearing 10 West FW Lifestyle | May 2014

Never Giving Up On a Child CASA Volunteer Advocate D.D. Holmes gives her all
Article Kristin Peaks | Photography Provided
E
very year, hundreds of abused children of all ages and cultures are removed from their parents and placed in a foster home. When that happens, these kids face an uncertain future with a legal case that can last anywhere from 12 months to several years. These kids need someone that takes a stand for them. Someone that has their back and protects them. That’s what D.D. Holmes does. D.D. is a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children and youth living in Tarrant County foster homes. She has been with CASA since 2011 and has never given up on a child. Sandra and Larry Williams can attest to that. The Williams’ adopted baby Demarcus last November during National Adoption Day. “You know how children can pick up others feelings towards them,” says Sandra. “Well, Demarcus knew that D.D. was a special person from the first day she came by. She always gave off happy, positive vibrations. My baby doesn’t let anyone hold him, but he was always so happy to see her and would reach out with his little arms for her to pick him up.” D.D. spent a lot of time with Demarcus. Just like she does with all of the other children she advocates for. She takes time to play with them and makes them laugh. She gets to know them. She shows up at every court hearing, answers every call and even stays in touch with them after they are out of the system. 12 West FW Lifestyle | May 2014
In April, CASA of Tarrant County named D.D. the Monika Dewer Advocate of the Year. Her commitments and determination as an advocate made her an obvious choice. And 17-year-old Keisha knows that better than anyone else. Keisha has lived in six different foster homes since she was 5 years old. Now she is about to age-out of the foster care system and face society head on. She has to do this without a safety net. As many would imagine, Keisha is anxious. There’s no denying that, but D.D. has been by Keisha’s side throughout all of it. She has inspired her to believe in herself and to never set limits on her potential for success. D.D. remembers what it was like being a teenager. “I remember the trauma and challenges of being a teen and how education changed my life,” she says. “It’s the key to their future; the opportunity to avoid another generation of failure.” In addition to her work with CASA, D.D. holds a Ph.D. and is a certified public accountant (CPA), worked in Fort Worth for Thomson Reuters and TCU. She is also a PriceWaterhouseCoopers alum and active in the Fort Worth Chapter of CPAs and Texas Society of CPAs. She and her husband, Steve, have three grown children. D.D. is one of more than 300 volunteer advocates that speak up for abused and neglected children. CASA of Tarrant County is a volunteer-driven organization, and the only one of its kind in the county. “You don’t need to be a lawyer or a social worker to give a child a voice in court,” says Rebecca Farrow, CASA executive director. “Foster children have a lot of people involved in their case, but their volunteer advocate is the one constant in their lives. Our volunteers are extremely dedicated, spending an average of 10-12 hours a month on their cases.”

Michael’s Cuisine Restaurant and Ancho Chili Bar A cultural gem that appeals to your senses on every level Article Ann E. Butenas Photography joni Shaw Smith
E
ven though spring has sprung, there is a bit of a “chile” in the air and by all forecasts, it is here to stay for the long haul, thanks to a wonderful gem in the heart of the cultural district. Michael’s Cuisine Restaurant and Ancho Chile Bar, located at 3413 West 7th Street, is a true champion in the culinary arts. This is the place that can make your taste buds dance and your palate sing, appealing to your senses on all levels. Owned and operated by Chef/Restaurateur/Proprietor Michael Thomson, this casual lunch and dinner establishment is both romantic and affordable, with its roots in what Thomson refers to as “contemporary ranch cuisine,” an inspired concept that has made its presence known. Originally from Cocoa Beach, Fla., Thomson moved to Texas with his family in the mid-1970s. As one who has long referred to himself as a “Flori-Texan,” Thomson has always had a keen interest in the culinary arts and remembers being drawn to the kitchen at an early age. “While in Florida, we lived next door to two retired restaurateurs from New York City,” he recalls. “One of them decided to open a restaurant in Florida and that is where I got my first job at age 13.” Even though he spent most of his time bussing tables and washing dishes, Thomson took every opportunity to educate himself in the kitchen. By the time he was 16, he knew he wanted to own a restaurant one day. While a student at Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M at Kingsville), Thomson worked as a chef and kitchen manager at various establishments while simultaneously earning a degree in business management and marketing. Upon graduating in 1982, he moved back home to Fort Worth and met a man who needed a chef in his restaurant. That led to honing his skills as a kitchen manager before working for multiple well-known Texas hotels and restaurants. For eight years, he was the corporate consulting chef for the Burlington Northern Railroad and was also an international chef for Delta Air Lines.
14 West FW Lifestyle | May 2014
Additionally, he has been published in Chile Pepper Chile magazine; has made numerous television appearances and has conducted several cooking classes. When he eventually circled back around to Fort Worth, it was at a time when southwest cuisine was making a name for itself. However, Thomson added his own unique twist to that appeal. “My cuisine, while southwestern in its roots, goes a bit further,” he explains. “I use chile peppers in almost everything I make, from the appetizers to the entrees, and even in the desserts and drinks.” While most might think of the heat component when using the chile pepper, Thomson appreciates the endless possibilities they inspire and the panorama of flavors afforded by this highly versatile ingredient. “We incorporate chiles in many forms – fresh, dried, pureed and powdered,” he notes. “I lean towards Mexico in terms of flavors, spices and techniques.”
When he opened his restaurant in March of 1992, Thomson worked tirelessly to make sure his cuisine, though southwestern in roots, really stood on that foundation of contemporary ranch cuisine. “I like to refer to the typical Texas ranches, to which people escape on the weekends to relax and forget about the stresses of the day,” he smiles. “When I opened my place, I converted all of the former recipes with which I worked into the contemporary ranch cuisine for which we are known today. Our consistency with our food in that regard is the foundation of our success.” For 22 years, that consistency is what continues to bring diners through these doors, welcoming them not only to a pleasing experience of the palate, but also to one of the soul. Among the most popular items on the menu include Michael’s signature Gulf crab cakes with ancho chile cream sauce. “The crab cakes definitely bring out the Florida influence and this was actually the
dish that made me an international chef for Delta Airlines,” he notes. Another signature dish is the pepper-crusted, pan seared beef tenderloin with ancho chile bourbon sauce. Although this dish has its roots in French cuisine, Michael recreated it to reflect the true contemporary ranch appeal through the use of bourbon, a traditional American spirit. Yet another recipe inspired by his southern heritage is the jalapeno shrimp, which uses fresh Texas gulf shrimp, lightly poached and accented with a pickled jalapeno spiced onion mixture, providing great flavor that is easy to savor. Michael’s is also known for its mouth-watering array of soups. “We have more than 50 soup recipes, including our ‘clam chowder with an attitude’ soup offered every Friday, and our popular roasted red bell pepper soup,” notes Thomson. Thomson was also one of the first to incorporate chile peppers into desserts, such as the ancho chile chocolate mousse.
Metropolitan Day Spa of fort Worth
“The rich, raisin-like flavor of the chile puts a tingle in the back of your throat while complementing the light Belgium chocolate taste,” says Thomson. And don’t forget the jalapeno margaritas and martinis! By all appearances, it seems that Thomson has achieved one of his defining goals: to become an institution in town and put Fort Worth on the culinary map.
takes pride in bringing you an invigorating spa experience to help you restore the balance and energy of your mind, body and soul.

Bell Brothers Moving, Storage and Delivery A company you can trust for all your moving needs Article Ann E. Butenas | Photography Rachel Noble
S
ome companies like to think outside the box. Others prefer to think inside the box. Some companies embrace both philosophies while simultaneously rising above and beyond customer expectations in the process. Bell Brothers Moving, Storage and Delivery is one such company. When looking for a moving company that stands on a solid foundation of quality, dependability, experience, integrity, knowledge and excellence, then look no further than Bell Brothers. Serving Fort Worth, Dallas and the surrounding areas, this faith-based, family-owned business, accredited by the Better Business Bureau, can service all of your local, long distance, residential and commercial moving needs. This full-service moving company can pack your belongings; provide all standard moving supplies; move you; and even store your things in their on-site storage facility. Established in January of 2009, owner Charley Bell named his company in honor of his late brother, Matthew, who passed away several years ago. “Coming from an entrepreneurial family, Charley knew that he 16 West FW Lifestyle | May 2014
wanted to start a business one day and when he did, he wanted to name it for himself and his two brothers,” reflects Raegan Bell, Charley’s wife and co-owner. As the face of the company, Bell makes sure that all operations function smoothly each day, and this translates to keeping a steady finger on the pulse of everything from estimates, to marketing, to meeting with people in the community. “I lead the office team while Charley oversees the logistics,” she explains. “We run nine trucks each day, which are bobtails, not 18-wheelers, along with some truck and trailer combinations.” With most of its work is focused on residential needs, Bell Brothers is a fully licensed and insured company that understands every detail involved in a move, whether just a few blocks away or a couple thousand miles away, and each move begins with one simple step. “We like to ask certain questions of our customers before we start the process,” notes Bell. “When we have a full understanding of their needs, we can prepare for the move much more efficiently. For example, if we know that someone is moving from a third
floor apartment, we make sure to send in our guys who are best equipped to walk up and down stairs carrying heavy loads. If we know someone has treasured antiques to move, we know exactly how to pack them and have experienced team members who understand how to move those items. Everything we move is treated as if it belonged to our family. We appreciate how much these items mean to our customers.” Additionally, Bell Brothers stands at the ready to provide solutions, address any issues or problems, and essentially advise each customer how to make the move more affordable, efficient and carefree. “Some of our customers prefer to box up all of their things on their own and just have us come in to move those boxes, while others would rather we come in and handle every single detail,” says Bell, noting that many feel so confident in their services that they will just hand over the house keys and let Bell Brothers take it from there. “To know that they trust us completely with their home and their possessions speaks volumes, and we pride ourselves on delivering that level of honesty and integrity each and every time.” What Bell enjoys most about her job is that no two days are like and no two customers are alike. “We meet so many different people who are dealing with so many different situations,
but they all have the same needs when it comes to our involvement with them.” When providing some helpful moving tips, Bell emphasizes the importance of starting the moving process early and taking stock of what items you have in your home. “We will do a walk-through before each move and assess what needs to be stored and what needs to be packed. The more things you have packed in advance of the move, the quicker the move will flow. Also, be sure to label the boxes for whatever the new rooms are and use standard moving boxes. And if you have odd items and don’t know how to pack them, just ask us. We have the experience and skill sets to provide the care and knowledge necessary to get the job done right.” While moving can be very stressful, Bell Brothers is committed to making each move as easy and, yes, as fun as possible. In fact, they are determined that each move they make for their customers is truly a moving experience. For more information, visit Bell Brothers at 3909 East 1st Street; go online at BellBrothersMoving.com or call 817.713.1712. Wearable Works of Art Lisa McConnell, Jewelry Design Studio Article Lisa Allen | Photography Rachel Noble
P
eople really talk to Lisa McConnell. The relationships she forges with those who seek her help to revamp or preserve a cherished stone or piece of jewelry is part detective, part confidante, part visionary. Through conversation and connection, she hones in on what matters most to a customer, and creates a wearable work of art that embodies personal aesthetic, history and hope for the future. The eponymous creator of Lisa McConnell Design Studio, McConnell has been in the jewelry business for more than 30 years. She started her career in wholesale and trade work, but as the economy morphed she found herself doing more and more retail work. Eventually she was downsized, and in establishing her own studio has become known for her ability to not only handle difficult and complicated repairs but for her knack for taking older pieces and transforming them into something new. “My signature style is clean and architectural,” says McConnell, “and I work with silver, gold and platinum. I don’t specialize in just one thing.” McConnell says that she was quiet and shy as a child, but that she is able to express herself through her custom jewelry; with limited runs and exclusive pieces crafted especially for clients, McConnell has been called ‘an artist’s artist.’ The heart of McConnell’s business is guiding clients as they decide what they want to do with an older piece of jewelry. “It’s not just about style,” she says. “It’s about sentiment and the deeper meaning behind the pieces. When we sit down to talk, the focus is always on what’s most important about that piece, what the memories are and how to best preserve that. I never know what I’m going to make until we’ve talked through not just the practical issues, but the emotions that are inherent in every piece.”
18 West FW Lifestyle | May 2014
McConnell learns about each client’s lifestyle and typical daily activities as well. Knowing, for example, that a client handles paper all day in a secretarial position would steer her away from a shared pronged ring, as paper can cause the most wear and tear on a ring. “It’s like if you’re prepping to walk ten miles, you wouldn’t put on a pair of high heels,” she says, “but what really drives me isn’t the practical. It’s the story behind each piece. It’s my job to do what they want, but also to guide them and share my expertise, so there are no regrets down the road.” She’s created custom designs for people who want to commemorate life, celebrate an occasion or simply capture the roller coaster emotions of a relationship. “I know that they’ll look at this piece of jewelry for the rest of their lives,” she says. “It’s serious business about sensitive feelings and memories. When we talk, all of that comes out, and I know that I’m being trusted with a small, but very important part of their lives. We may not see each other again for years, but it’s not lost on me that for a short time I am the keeper of their story.” McConnell is also passionate about local business, and is the president and co-founder of FOWO, or Fort Worth for Women. FOWO is a business network that serves local woman-owned businesses. “I’ve been located on the west side of Fort Worth since 1996,” says McConnell, “and I passionately believe in shopping local and supporting each other. It’s not just about reinvesting our money in the community through our shopping; it’s also about being able to walk into a business and have a conversation with the owner. It’s important to be able to identify the face and the passion behind a business.” To learn more visit LisaMcConnell.com

Gardening for the

e all garden for different reasons‌ to grow healthy food, to exercise, to create beauty, to learn, to meet people, to be outdoors, to win a competition, to make memories, to simply enjoy the process. No matter the motivation for your horticultural endeavors, gardening offers a unique opportunity to engage the present moment. In our hurried age, experts all around recommend taking time to slow down and connect with what is happening right now. Gardening offers a unique opportunity to stop and smell the roses‌ We can credit Aristotle with the classification of our five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing. As early as the late 1700s the famous philosopher Immanuel Kant advocated that our knowledge of the outside world depends on our modes of perception. Poets and artists through the ages have found words and pictures to express this connection. Each of our five senses connects an organ with specialized cellular structures designed to respond to specific stimuli and are linked to the nervous system and brain. Scientists have studied the advantages of engaging our senses to 20 West FW Lifestyle | May 2014
become more mindful, or aware. Some of those benefits include reducing stress and rumination; increasing memory, focus and mental flexibility; decreasing emotional reactivity and finding greater satisfaction in relationships. So why not try this unique approach and incorporate a little something for each of your five senses in your garden or landscape this spring and summer?
SIGHT
Gardens can be beautiful visual art and using some ideas from the art world can really enhance yours, especially if selecting color overwhelms you. One great tool is the color wheel. You can purchase an inexpensive one at any craft store. To create a bold, dramatic effect, try planting in complementary colors. These are any colors opposite each other on the wheel. Take the color wheel with you when you go to purchase your plants. For example, when choosing annuals, select a flower color you like then locate the opposite color on the wheel and find other florae in that hue. Or try an analogous color scheme (a cluster of three adjacent colors on the wheel). Focal points are another idea for gardening that we borrow from art and design principals. It is also a science term in physics. In optics, a focal point is created by using a lens to direct light rays to a certain point. In design, something creative is used as that lens to lead an observer’s eyes through a work of art, a room, a landscape or… a garden. They help create visual order in what can appear as chaos. Think of your garden as a map, and focal points as the larger cities on the map that your eyes see first because they are the largest. A fountain, a wind sculpture or a bird house make great centerpieces.
SOUND
With the hustle and bustle of our lives, silence can be a beautiful sound. Simply sitting in the quiet of a garden can be music to our ears. If you want to add the twinkling tones of nature’s songbirds, attract birds by providing consistent food, water and cover. Research types of birds to determine what they eat and what types of nesting they require and provide those. A simple, shallow (no more than 3” deep) birdbath is a great way to furnish water. Or, impart a more man-made touch with the subtle melodies of a delicate wind chime to add a magical quality to the air. continued >

gardening for the five senses (continued)
TOUCH
As you plan for the sense of touch, think “petting zoo for plants” and ask yourself if the texture of the plant is interesting and durable. One of the most delightful plants to feel is Lambs’ Ear. Its large leaves are densely covered in silky, white hairs and feel like velvet. Snapdragons are another playful flower that is amazing to touch. They come in a variety of vivid, bright colors and their blooms open and close when pinched at the “jaw.” Kids love both of these plants.
SMELL
TASTE
One of the joys of growing your own food is the experience of the freedom of plucking something off a plant and eating it in nature. Berries are a sweet favorite, of course, though they require a lot of sun and can take years to establish. In the meantime, there are so many types of mint that are fun to eat. Planting several different kinds and then taste testing them is a treat. Many types of flowers are also edible, such as marigold, nasturtiums, pansies and peonies. Be careful, though, because not every flower is edible. Never use pesticides or chemicals on them, don’t eat them from the roadside, and be sure you correctly identify the flower before you eat it.

There’s nothing like the surprise of encountering a beautiful scent as you walk through a garden. It’s fun to try to identify where it’s coming from. Honeysuckle and lilac are two of nature’s most permeating scents. Honeysuckle has wonderful sweet smell, and it flourishes in sunny areas with a rock wall, trellis or fence to grow on. It also attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and bees so vital to all botanical life. Lilac is also a pleasant smell, and comes in many varieties. The Korean Dwarf Lilac is an easy-to-maintain tree-like bush in the shape of a popsicle. The skinny trunk is topped by a puff of greenery with clusters of powerful-smelling lavender blooms in the spring. To maintain the circular shape and thickness, be sure to trim monthly. Be sure to include a beautiful bench or a pea pebble path in your design. Then make time to take a walk or sit and enjoy the fruits of your labors with your eyes, ears, fingers, mouth and nose. No matter what type of garden you grow, consider your five senses as you plan and plant. It makes sense! These ideas were inspired by our friends at GardenWeasel. com, experts in landscape and gardening for more than 30 years. Find more gardening tips at GroundBreakingTips.com.

In the Garden of Stone By Susan Tekulve
Reviewed by Tracy Sullivan
I
n the epic novel In the Garden of Stone, author Susan Tekulve beautifully weaves a tale of multiple generations living in the rural coal mining country of West Virginia. Tekulve’s debut novel won the South Carolina First Novel Prize in 2012. The book is filled with stories of love and hardship told primarily in the female characters’ voices. Beginning in 1924, the book opens with 16-year-old Emma Palmisano’s life within an immigrant miner’s family. They are dirt poor, yet happy. When a coal car derails one night and buries Emma’s home, she awakens to the sound of a railroad man, Caleb Sypher, digging her out and gently cleaning the coal off her feet. Charmed by his kindness and the prospect of a better life, Emma is whisked away to a farm high in the mountains and realizes a lifestyle she could never have imagined. In the Garden of Stone details Emma’s life through its highs and lows. We are introduced to her son Dean, his wife, their daughter and the challenges they all face. Tekulve’s writing is finely nuanced and the characters are well written. However, I felt a bit disappointed that each time I became attached to a new character, the narrative switched and questions were briefly left unanswered. When the story returned to the previous character, questions were answered but without fail, some type of misfortune had befallen them. Although the families endure, I kept hoping some of them might avoid the fate of their ancestors and perhaps live a less trag-
edy-riddled life. The characters show pride and stoically accept the destiny that befalls each of them. It is hard not to root for Emma and her son’s family. Throughout the book, the elegantly portrayed descriptions of the Appalachian landscape—from the coalmines to the mountains to the intricate stone sculptures—almost create a character of Appalachia itself. These families cherish the land on which they dwell and the importance of the part it plays in their lives. The lives of all are fraught with illness, betrayal and loss. It’s easy to lose track of the story’s uplifting moments and theme of forgiveness. Simple pleasures are never taken for granted throughout this novel. When placed in the characters’ shoes, the reader might wonder if they would have acted the same or taken a different path. The importance of time and place is a huge factor when judging the actions of not only the main storytellers, but of secondary characters as well. In the Garden of Stone may not be the most uplifting book, but it leaves a strong impression with the reader. In these times when some people might take life’s simple pleasures for granted, this story shows that it is possible to endure most anything and be thankful for all that we have. Susan Tekulve’s nonfiction, short stories and essays have appeared in journals including Denver Quarterly, Indiana Review, Georgia Review, Connecticut Review, and Shenandoah. Her story collection My Mother’s War Stories received the 2004 Winnow Press fiction prize.

Credit Card Debt is on the Rise W
ith consumer confidence growing, many consumers are pulling out their credit cards once again and forgetting about their savings accounts. A recent survey by Bankrate.com found that almost 30 percent of Americans have more credit card debt than they have in savings. Additionally, only 51 percent have enough emergency savings to pay off their credit card debt. In the last quarter of 2013, America’s debt, which includes mortgages, auto loans, student loans and credit cards, rose 2.1 percent or $241 billion. That is the largest increase since the third quarter of 2007. “People are feeling more confident in their financial situation,” states Jana Castanon, spokesperson for Apprisen. “They have endured the struggles of the last six years and are rewarding themselves at the expense of accumulating more credit card debt. It seems many have forgotten the lessons of the past.”
Before credit card debt gets out of control, Apprisen offers some tips to decrease debt and increase savings: Write down all of your outstanding debts. It’s important that you know who you owe and how much. Make a list of your creditors, balances, interest rates and minimum payments due. Once you look at the total, you might be surprised at how fast the debt accumulated and be more motivated to pay it off. Create a spending plan. Allocate every dollar that comes into the household, to a specific spending category. Don’t forget to include your periodic expenses, such as gifts, clothes, insurance, etc. Then, look for ways to increase income or decrease expenses to generate additional cash flow to apply towards your debt. Create a debt snowball. Make minimum payments on all of your debts except for the one with the lowest balance or highest interest rate, whichever you decide you want to pay off first. Then apply the additional cash you have “found” in your budget to that payment. When that debt is paid off, take that whole amount and apply it to the next account. Make a commitment not to use your credit cards during this time. Transfer a set amount from your paycheck to a savings account. Increasing savings is equally important as paying down debt. Automatically transfer a specific amount from your paycheck to a savings account. Be realistic about what you are putting in. If you are depositing $50 and taking out $50, you are defeating the purpose. If you could only put $20 in and leave it in, you will be more successful in building your emergency fund. “Sometimes, it is too easy to fall back into old patterns of behavior,” says Castanon. “Before it’s too late, make a conscious effort to get your debt under control and your emergency savings funded, so when the next life event happens you will be financially prepared.”
Apprisen, a national nonprofit credit counseling agency, has been helping consumers manage their finances and get out of debt for almost 60 years.

Parting Thoughts
Greetings from Zin City Words Denise Snodell
I
have a dirty little secret. I’m a non-gardener who has somehow slyly scraped the earth’s surface. Yes, it’s true I’m not ambitious about “planting things.” While other suburbanites take pride in nudging photosynthesis, I am clueless. Clueless. My hidden outdoorsy adventure has nothing to do with homegrown veggies and herbs, either. Nice concept, but I thrill at harvesting crops in the grocery produce section only. It’s all prepicked and shiny and waxed. Nice. Whatever it takes to avoid the effort involved with growing cornucopia fillers, I’m there. But flowers are a different story. I cultivate some myself. Crazy as it sounds, every summer, all summer long and into fall, my house is bursting with colorful, artful bouquets from my very own secret garden. It’s not exactly a garden. My planting area is a little patch of sloping not-grass on a narrow side yard, right up against the house. Picture this glamorous triangulation: a small area of lumpy dirt just below the dryer vent, smack dab between a small concrete door slab and a spidery window well. What I just described is the opposite of a British flower scenario. (English people set the bar for lovely flower gardens.) If I were, say, an outskirt Londoner, my so-called garden would instead be in full view, punctuated with a delicate iron trellis and an antique stone bench, just beyond a row of fragrant, exotic roses. But here I am in Middle America, with the frumpiest set-up the outdoors can offer. Did I mention the dryer vent? Fear not, when warm weather hits, I have some stuff even British royalty would die for. Good ol’ blaring American sun. A few cheap packets of zinnia seeds. A watering can. And southern exposure. Take that, Queen.

The thing about zinnias is they’re perfect cutting flowers. And that’s why I’m a big fan. Probably many people who know what they’re doing plant zinnias as part of a sweeping, stay-put master-gardened grand plan. Their zins might serve as an untouchable color patch to transition the eye from, say, hydrangeas to box hedges. That sounds horrible, in retrospect, but it’s coming from me. What do I know? Nothing. So how did this whole zinnia thing happen? By accident. Years ago, I received a free seed sample in the mail. I think it was from a real estate agent. Can’t remember. The packet showed such a colorful mix and stated these suckers were great cutting flowers. When I noticed the instructions advised to plant the seeds just a quarter inch deep in the soil, I was totally on board. A fraction of an inch meant no worm encounters and no complications. Plus, I knew there was that un-mowable bare section at the side of the house, soaking up all that sunlight in vain. My cutting garden was born. It’s been bouquet city ever since. Inspired, but not a gardener? Trust me, zinnias are so forgiving. They can get thirsty, yes, but who wouldn’t with all that sun? I’m sure garden clubbers have strict “how to” rules, but I plant my little buddies on my own schedule—sometime in the spring, when I feel like it. I always drop the seeds too close together, oops. Some years I fertilize the soil, others I don’t. Regardless, the zinnias always show up, and they’re always beautiful. My only advice, other than “just add water,” is to make sure you buy seeds labeled “giant” or “super giant.” Ka-pow! It’s a good idea to have garden scissors, too. Upon the first wave of blooms, I run with mine.
