The Gift of Perspective

As we step into the season of giving, it's a perfect time to reflect on how we nurture not just others, but also ourselves. Travel, for me, has always been a key part of maintaining mental health. It offers a shift in perspective, a chance to step outside the routine, and the opportunity to see life through fresh eyes. Whether it's a grand adventure across the globe or a quick weekend away, travel reminds us how much there is to be thankful for. My recent trip to France was just that—a beautiful reminder of the world’s wonders and the rejuvenating power of new experiences. Please check out the article that highlights "Dream Vacations by Melissa".  A local travel agent is always nice to have!

But mental health isn't just about escapes. It’s about creating joy and balance in our everyday lives. I’m continuously inspired by the sense of community we have here in Windsor. Whether you’re attending a local event, chatting with neighbors, or lacing up your sneakers for a run with run.Windsor, this town reminds us that connection and movement are essential gifts to give ourselves. Supporting our local shops and businesses is another way we can invest in our community’s well-being. Shopping local is not only an act of kindness but a way to sustain the vibrant heartbeat of Windsor.  Fun fact that many don't know...Windsor has its very own local book store....Words of Windsor.  Check out their book review as you are thumbing through all the pages and then run down to Words of Windsor to see all the books they have to offer!

As we head into the holidays, let’s remember that while gifts are often material, some of the most profound gifts are the ones we give ourselves: time, travel, community, and a grateful heart.

Wishing you all a season of warmth and connection.

YOUR LOCAL BOOKSTORE LOCATED AT 631 BIRCH STREET, UNIT B WINDSOR

Holiday Mayhem Awaits!

The holidays can be a magical time, but let’s face it—they can also get a bit messy! And maybe that’s why “The Santa Trap” by Jonathan Emmett and “Grumpy Monkey Oh, No! Christmas” by Suzanne Lang are two of our store’s favorite holiday books. These stories bring humor to the ups and downs of the season.

Meet Bradley Bartleby in “The Santa Trap.” As the book says, he’s bad—really bad. This troublemaker has big ideas about what he deserves from Santa and decides to make sure he gets it. After a disappointing gift last year, Bradley outfits his entire house with traps to catch Santa, ready to have some words with him about last Christmas. But things don’t go as planned… in a BIG way. By the end, Bradley learns a little something about what the holidays are really about.

In “Grumpy Monkey Oh, No! Christmas,” Jim the monkey is not having the Christmas he hoped for. It’s wet and miserable, and Jim isn’t shy about letting everyone know how he feels. Then, a friend offers him a warm cup of tea. As it soothes his stomach, Jim slows down, noticing the small wonders of the season he’d been too grumpy to see.

We love these books for bringing humor to holiday mishaps and warming our hearts. Our store has these and many other Christmas books, puzzles, and treats to help make your holiday season special. We’re open 10 am-6 pm Monday through Saturday and 1 pm-5 pm on Sundays.

"The Santa Trap" and "Grumpy Monkey Oh, No! Christmas” bring humor and heart to the holiday season's ups and downs.

HOW COLORADO NATIVE, MANDY MULLEN TURNED HER PASSION FOR RUNNING INTO WHAT IS NOW A THRIVING COMMUNITY, BUSINESS, AND MORE

RUNNING STRONGER TOGETHER

Off to a great start at the run. Windsor Turkey Trot!

In the heart of Colorado, Mandy Mullen has harnessed her passion for running to build the run.Windsor Race Series, a vibrant community initiative that promotes physical fitness while fostering

and her team poured incredible creativity and effort into designing a race that adhered to safety standards. This included implementing social distancing, staggering the 300 participants

local engagement. With the support of runners, volunteers, and sponsors, this series has evolved into a dynamic platform that serves people of all abilities, uniting them through shared experiences and a love for the sport.

The journey began in 2017 with a women’s running group founded by two stay-at-home moms. As a certified running coach, Mandy aimed to provide women with the support and knowledge to start or continue their running journeys. This led to the acquisition of a local 5K around Windsor Lake. This experience ignited Mandy’s love for race directing, leading her to envision something larger.  Despite challenges like organizing Windsor’s first half marathon in 2020 and a studio closure post-pandemic, Mandy stayed committed to her vision.

The 2020 Windsor Half Marathon was a pivotal point in recognizing the benefits of organized running events. Against the backdrop of COVID-19, she

into waves of 25, requiring masks, and hosting a limited after-party. That year, runners from ten states traveled to Windsor, drawn by the rarity of in-person events. Today, Mandy’s races continue to attract participants from across Colorado, the U.S., and even the UK. In October 2024, the Windsor Marathon welcomed runners and their families from 15 different states, highlighting the series's growing appeal.

Today, run.Windsor hosts nine local events in Windsor, Severance, and Greeley. From a 1-mile Kids Run to 5k’s and a 24-hour backyard ultra race, they cater to a wide range of participants. Mandy recalls a moment at Weld Your Mettle when local, Brandon Holt reached the 100-mile mark. “This is what it’s been about all along—helping people reach new potential,” she reflected, capturing the essence of their mission.

New experiences were shared a month later at Red, White and Brew

in Raindance. This event featured a 12-hour "last man standing" race, where participants completed a 4.2-mile loop every hour on the hour. Starting with 22 athletes, the competition intensified throughout the day, with some dropping out or missing the hourly cutoff. By 6 PM, the atmosphere was electric as five runners, who formed strong bonds throughout the day, crossed the finish line for the last time. The event was amplified with cold plunges, saunas, and kids' bouncy houses.

As the series expanded, Mandy’s personal running journey also evolved. Once a hopeful participant for the Boston Marathon, she shifted her focus to ultramarathons. Now, you’re more likely to find her at the finish line of the Leadville 100 than a road race. Inspired by her experiences, she and Shawn Wherry created run.Colorado Relays as they took over Colorado’s only two cross-state overnight relay races.

The Wild West Relay, a 200-mile journey from Fort Collins to Steamboat Springs, and the Flaming Foliage, 165 miles from Idaho Springs to Buena Vista, showcase more than just running—they celebrate teamwork, camaraderie, and unforgettable adventures. Participants take turns running various sections of the course, working together to reach the finish line.

While they embrace the ultra running world, the team remains committed to creating a welcoming environment for beginner runners. They understand the profound impact running can have on mental, emotional, and physical well-being. The

atmosphere at their events emphasizes celebration rather than competition, showcasing the spirit and resilience of the Northern Colorado community.

Team member Suz Kandler shared how transformative her experience was at the Flaming Foliage Relay, where her husband and niece volunteered. Nowadays, you’ll often see Suz’s family volunteering at races. “Many people have reached out to thank me for inspiring them as a fellow beginner. I’m a part of this team to show that running doesn’t have to be intimidating—we all start somewhere.”

At the heart of the run.Windsor Race Series is the commitment to making each event a community celebration by integrating local businesses and nonprofits. This collaboration enhances the race day experience and encourages runners and spectators to support local businesses.

You’ll find the entire run.Windsor team including course director Shawn, Suz, Mandy’s husband Nick, who serves as the timer, their two young boys, family, and friends at the finish of every race. To this day, they maintain an unspoken rule that the finish line arch remains up until the very last runner crosses. As their slogan emphasizes, "We are Stronger Together."

Having experiences like this can stimulate creativity and new ways of thinking.

Melissa is an advocate for travel’s ability to impact mental wellness. Shifting the way we view travel from being a luxury to a necessity, to being present with self and family, and to nurturing those relationships lends itself to overall health. She stresses the importance of taking time out to check in with ourselves in order to see what we need, asking questions like, “Are we happy?” and “What changes or adjustments do we need to make?” The mental flexibility to be able to let go of the dayto-day and be in the here and now is linked to overall cognitive health and personal growth.

Exposure to new cultures, ideas, and experiences can stimulate creativity and new ways of thinking. In short, travel fosters self-enhancement, reduces stress, and provides mental rejuvenation, which all contribute to better overall mental health.

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org
