So Many Things to Love About Windsor!

As the new year unfolds in Windsor, I find myself reflecting on the many things that make our community so vibrant and full of heart. There’s a unique kind of love that binds us here—a love for family, health, books, food, art, and above all, each other. It’s a love that inspires and strengthens, even during the most challenging times.

Family is the cornerstone of our lives. Whether it's the hugs exchanged after a long day or the simple joy of a meal together, family roots us and reminds us of what truly matters. Windsor’s families—yours and mine—are the bedrock of this town’s spirit.

Equally essential is our collective focus on health and well-being. From morning runs through our scenic trails to the yoga classes held in local studios, Windsor offers countless ways to nourish body and mind. Let’s continue to support one another in living vibrant, healthy lives, finding balance in the midst of our busy days, and make sure you check out the Brave Living Wellness article.  You may even want to sign up for their retreat.

Books, too, are a gateway to connection and inspiration. Our local library and independent bookstore are treasures, offering stories that entertain, educate, and expand our horizons. Whether you’re delving into a historical novel or a memoir that speaks to the soul, there’s always something new to discover and share.  You will learn more about Words of Windsor which is our local book store in their article as well.

And who could forget the culinary delights of Windsor? Our town is blessed with restaurants, bakeries, and breweries that bring people together over good food and drink. There’s something magical about savoring a perfectly crafted dish or a cup of coffee brewed just right, especially when shared with loved ones.

Art, in all its forms, is another thread that weaves through our community. From gallery exhibitions to live performances, Windsor’s artists inspire us to see the world in new and beautiful ways. Supporting the arts not only enriches our lives but also celebrates the creativity that defines us.

Together, these passions create the fabric of our community. Each day, I’m reminded of how fortunate we are to call Windsor home—a place where love and connection are at the heart of everything we do. Let’s continue to celebrate and nurture this wonderful community in 2025 and beyond.

Fuel Your Love for Books

Hungry? I am not talking about feeding your belly, I am talking about feeding your mind! Words of Windsor bookstore offers a smorgasbord of books and literature to feed that hungry mind. From fiction and fantasy to non-fiction and mystery, there is a book to satisfy any mindful mood or appetite!

Sam Webb, Owner of Words of Windsor has always had a love for reading and books. At an early age, Sam would completely immerse herself in book after book and never denied her passion, which is what helped her open her own bookstore! "Books hold an entire world between their covers," says Sam, "and when you open up a book and read, it opens up a whole new world for the reader." Whether it is a fiction novel about magical fantasy, sparking the imagination of "what-if," or a non-fiction book about a historical period that takes you back in time, to read is to invoke imagination and provoke thought.

At Words of Windsor, there are books for every mood, and people have many, often evoking them to read multiple books at a time. In a time when so much shopping is done online, Sam has observed a resurgence in people shopping locally more and more. While online shopping is convenient, there's a growing desire to reconnect with the experience of shopping in person - especially for items like books. It's about immersing yourself in the atmosphere of a bookstore as you select the novel you're about to dive into. It makes sense and it's fun! Not only does Words of Windsor sell new books for children and adults, but the store also has a local interest section with books and items highlighting Colorado and Windsor. Journaling supplies, cards, puzzles, teas, mugs, and other fun gifts can also be found. Serving as a community gathering place, Words of

BRAVE LIVING WELLNESS

EMPOWERING WOMEN TO RECLAIM THEIR BEST SELVES

Self-love and care are essential to becoming your best self.

Suz Kandler of Brave Living Wellness in Windsor remembers being athletic from a young age. Starting in gymnastics at age three and transitioning to competitive cheerleading at age 16 set the stage for her life journey of striving to be her best self, fueling her excitement to encourage others to do the same.

Her career path includes roles as a weight loss counselor, a manager at weight-loss companies, and a partner at a health and fitness organization—each requiring her to motivate people to pursue a personal wellness plan that feels good and brings joy.

Brave Living Wellness is the culmination of Suz’s mission to inspire and encourage growth. She helps women tap into the powerful version of themselves that may have gotten lost over the years. Using nutrition, health, wellness, and mindset she helps them set a vision for themselves and works CONTINUED >

together with them to feel empowered again. Her approach is holistic, meaning it focuses on overall wellness—addressing areas such as career health, spiritual health, nutrition, maintaining a healthy weight, and self-advocacy. She guides women to live bravely through whatever goals they want to set for themselves.

Prioritizing self-love and care is a common struggle among women with barriers like time, money, and feelings of selfishness or guilt standing in the way. Suz uses the analogy of the oxygen mask on an airplane to help explain the importance of self-love and care. In the unfortunate event of needing to apply oxygen masks during a flight, you are advised to put yours on first before assisting another with theirs. If you aren’t able to breathe, you can’t help another person. In the same way, Suz educates women to understand that when they feel their best, they can better support the ones they love because their loved ones are getting the best version of them.

Some practical day-to-day habits that Suz suggests to actively cultivate self-love are:

• Having a morning routine which could include quiet time, personal development, journaling, visualizing your day, movement, and supplementation.

• Time-blocking your commitments. Be sure to include “me time” moments.

• Practicing portion control.

• Hydrating. Drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily.

As another form of self-love, retreats provide a space that empowers women, recharges them, reignites their passion, and inspires them to become better versions of themselves.

After attending several, Suz is excited to host her first retreat in the mountains this summer. For additional information or to learn more about Brave Living Wellness, contact Suz at suz@braveliningwellness.me.

WINDOR’S PUBLIC ART RENAISSANCE

ARTICLE BY LAURA BROWARNY PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE TOWN OF WINDSOR
Muralist Chelsea Hart creates a mural on the sidewalk outside of Chimney Park Pool.

Transforming Spaces, Fostering Connections, and Celebrating Creativity Across the Growing Town

Public art benefits a community in so many ways besides creating a more beautiful place to live. Artwork that is accessible to everyone creates a sense of place making a town unique, driving the economy by attracting new people, and bringing physical environments to life by encouraging interaction with the art and with each other.

Windsor’s population is growing steadily, and it can be a challenge for a town with explosive growth to continue cultivating a sense of connection and community. Having art in public places provides residents with a jumping-off point for starting conversations and making connections with each other and their environment.

The Town of Windsor’s answer to this challenge comes from an unexpected place: the Parks and Rec Department. Windsor’s Parks, Recreation & Culture, specifically its Culture Division, is a small but mighty team that is working hard to ensure Windsor is a beautiful and exciting place to live.

In 2021, Culture Supervisor Laura Browarny stood in front of the Windsor Town Board to present a new Public Art Policy, the approval of which kick-started Windsor’s public art program and founded the Windsor Arts Commission. The

The latest addition to Windsor's public art is a sculpture series by light artist David Farquharson, installed at the new police station in December 2024.

Windsor Arts Commission, lovingly referred to as WAC is a team of volunteer community members appointed by the Town Board to help make decisions related to public art and to host special arts events for the community. WAC works closely with the Culture Division to identify locations and projects that would be a good fit for public artwork, select artists, and refine design concepts.

In its first few years of activity, WAC has accomplished more in the field of public art than most cities see in a decade. This is because of the dedication of the volunteers, the support of the Town Board, and the creativity and collaboration of the Culture staff. The Town staff responsible for public art in Windsor include Culture Supervisor Laura Browarny and Arts and Exhibits Specialist Chris Bates. Laura has been with the Town since 2017 building cultural programs including the Town of Windsor Museums. Chris began his relationship with Windsor as a muralist, selected to create WAC’s very first mural located at 408 Main Street. After completing multiple art projects for the Town, Chris joined the Culture staff to support other public artists working in Windsor.

So far, WAC has completed five murals and two large sculptures around town. Community members can use an interactive public art map to learn where to find these artworks and about the artists who created them. Some of the projects that have become community favorites include a mural on the Lakeview Tattoo building at 411 Main Street, created as a collaboration between WAC, the building owners, and the Windsor Downtown Alliance, and the “Stagecoach Time Machine,” installed at the new Historic Halfway Homestead in the summer of 2024. The next sculptures to arrive in Windsor are currently under construction in Monument, Colorado in the studio of metalwork artist Jodie Bliss. The monumental sculptures, which double as seating areas, will be installed at Kyger Open Space in early 2025.

The Culture Division also manages the Town of Windsor Museums, including the Art & Heritage Center and the Windsor History Museum. Just like public art, museums add value to a community in so many ways. The Town of Windsor Museums are growing and expanding alongside the Town’s public art program, and Windsor residents can expect to see some exciting new developments from the Museums in 2025.

THE SCOTTSDALE LURE OF

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.

Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.

Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture.

To the south is Downtown Scottsdale—also known as Old Town Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm

(including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square , one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.

Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor mini-golf destination Puttshack . What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL

PLAY

Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.

For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a pool a perfect choice. Many local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.

Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak in North Scottsdale is a popular mountain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is a park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love McCormickStillman Railroad Park , which boasts a small-scale train that circles the park and plenty of play areas.

A destination filled with numerous attractions is A rizona Boardwalk , a center that includes Butterfly Wonderland , OdySea Aquarium , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , Museum of Illusions , and more.

CULTURE

The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.

However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!

There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.

On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.

NEARBY

While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.
