Health, Wellness, and New Beginnings

As the calendar turns to January, there’s a collective sense of renewal in the air. It’s a time to reflect on the year past and set intentions for the year ahead. For many of us, the new year represents a clean slate—a chance to prioritize our health and wellness, both physically and mentally.

Health isn’t just about exercise routines or diet plans; it’s about creating balance. It’s about giving yourself grace on the hard days and celebrating small victories that often go unnoticed. Wellness comes in many forms: a quiet moment with a steaming cup of tea, a brisk walk outdoors, or even reconnecting with a long-neglected hobby.

January is also a time of optimism and possibility. Whether you’re setting bold resolutions or committing to smaller, more sustainable changes, remember that progress is not always linear. The most important step is the first one, no matter how small.

This month, let’s embrace new beginnings with open hearts and a positive mindset. Let’s focus on gratitude for the journey, knowing that every choice to care for ourselves is a step toward a healthier, more fulfilling life.

As you turn these pages, you will learn about how important community, mental health, and good food are for our souls.

Here’s to a year of wellness, growth, and fresh starts.

ARTICLE BY ANDREA WALKER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABBIE DOWNES EMPOWERING RESIDENTS WITH PHYSICAL, MENTAL, SOCIAL, AND SPIRITUAL SUPPORT DAILY

“Participating in activities enriches lives by creating deeper friendships.” – Cori Allen

Columbine Health is dedicated to promoting holistic well-being for its residents, providing support in areas of physical health, mental engagement, and spiritual care. With a focus on personalized nutrition, regular physical activity, and enriching social and creative activities, Columbine Health fosters a community where residents can thrive. This commitment is reflected in the efforts of leaders like Anna Von Dreele, Administrator at The Windsor Independent Living and Westwood Patio Homes, and Cori Allen, Activities Director, who work to ensure each resident feels supported and valued every day. As described by Anna, “Columbine Health is more than just a place to live—it is a community where residents can feel engaged, supported, and empowered to live their healthiest lives.”

SUPPORTING PHYSICAL WELLNESS WITH NUTRITION AND EXERCISE

Columbine Health prioritizes balanced nutrition as a foundation for wellness. Chef Glenn and his staff make healthy meals, offering nutritious choices based on resident input. This approach supports residents'  strength, immune health, and overall vitality. Regular physical activity is also a core part of Columbine Health’s wellness strategy, with exercise sessions led by a vendor three times a week, as well as monthly blood pressure checks. Additionally, residents enjoy walking groups, fitness classes, and outings to nearby parks, with close proximity to Windsor’s recreational spots like Boardwalk Park and local golf courses. Health is also about joy, as seen when the residents' hearts were filled with happiness during a recent Halloween visit from local children.

A resident enjoys a moment of joy and connection with a baby chick.
“Columbine Health is a community where residents feel engaged, supported, and empowered.” - Anna Von Dreele
At Columbine Commons, residents' smiles say it all.

ENHANCING LIVES WITH SOCIAL AND CREATIVE ACTIVITIES

Social engagement is an essential part of life at Columbine Health. The Activities Director, Cori Allen crafts a variety of activities designed to keep residents mentally and socially active. From fitness sessions and arts and crafts to games, parties, and spiritual gatherings, Columbine Health offers something for everyone. Cori’s work reflects Columbine’s goal to create a supportive, vibrant environment that enriches residents' lives and strengthens community bonds. Participating in these activities enables residents to form friendships, stay active, and continue pursuing personal interests. As Cori explains, “Participating in activities enriches lives by creating deeper friendships, sharing smiles, and providing opportunities for leadership.” Outings like those to Hearts & Horses, a therapeutic equine program, have been especially meaningful for residents like Barbara and Cecilia, who were able to relive fond memories of horseback riding from their younger days. These outings allow residents to reconnect with past experiences and form new, cherished memories.

PROMOTING MENTAL

WELLNESS THROUGH CREATIVE AND INTELLECTUAL  ENGAGEMENT

Creative activities and intellectual engagement are central to maintaining mental wellness among Columbine Health’s residents. Research shows that creative pursuits like painting, music, and storytelling can improve cognitive function, elevate mood, and provide an outlet for self-expression. Columbine Health embraces these activities to encourage continued learning, growth, and fulfillment among residents, showing that the pursuit of knowledge and creativity knows no age limits.

By offering a wide range of activities— from art workshops to book clubs and group discussions—Columbine Health creates a lively environment that nurtures residents’ mental engagement and cognitive health.

SUPPORTING SPIRITUAL HEALTH AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

For residents facing life’s challenges, including health concerns or the loss of loved ones, spiritual care provides essential emotional support. Columbine Health offers opportunities for residents to reflect on their beliefs, find solace, and build resilience. This holistic approach to wellness includes creating space for reflection, growth, and connection, which helps residents navigate transitions with greater peace and understanding.

A CONTINUUM OF CARE FOR COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Columbine Health’s Windsor Campus offers a continuum of care, from age 55-plus patio homes to skilled nursing facilities, ensuring residents can access the services they need as they age. For Anna Von Dreele, who has over 16 years of experience at Columbine Health, this continuum represents the organization’s dedication to resident-centered care. She highlights the benefits of Columbine Health’s locally owned foundation, which fosters a responsive culture that meets residents' and families’ needs effectively.

CHOOSING COLUMBINE HEALTH: A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY AND CARE

The staff at Columbine Health work diligently to create an environment that feels like family. As Cori warmly states, “You are valuable and important, and I look forward to your ideas, so we can have fun enjoying life together.” Columbine Health Systems is more than just a place to live—it is a community where residents can feel engaged, supported, and empowered to live their healthiest lives. For those seeking a vibrant, supportive community for themselves or a loved one, Columbine Health is a place where wellness is woven into every aspect of daily life. Find them at 1475 Main Street, Windsor, CO. Visit their website  https://www.columbinehealth.com/ columbinecommons or call 970-449-5540 for more information.

Elevate Your Mental Health

ARTICLE BY BRITTANY BISCEGLIA

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID GROSSMAN WITH COLORADO PHOTOGRAPHY IOME

Becky Lauridsen, owner of IOME.

Stress. We all experience it. Stress is a healthy and natural response that helps us address threats and challenges. However, continuously facing relentless challenges can become negatively wearing and unhealthy over time. In a world where we are often spread thin, it doesn’t take much to feel overwhelmed. Faced with daily challenges, with so much to prioritize and do, we can lose track of ourselves and our well-being until we hit that breaking point.

Becky Lauridsen, owner of IOME and a Licensed Professional Counselor, experienced her breaking point. Living on autopilot, clocking in and out of a job she wasn’t happy with, felt as though when she came home, her family was getting what was left of her, which wasn’t much! Instead of an I Owe You, Becky decided to give herself an I Owe Me, which is how the name IOME was created, and she opened her clinic in 2018. “You deserve the best because your loved ones deserve the best of you, not what’s left of you,” says Becky, and she believes that similar to physical health, we can take a preventative approach to our mental health.

While IOME provides a wide range of therapy services, Becky is excited to now offer LENS Neurofeedback Therapy! LENS Neurofeedback is IOME’s newest cutting-edge therapy technology, offering non-invasive, low-intensity electromagnetic signals, encouraging the brain to recalibrate itself naturally. LENS therapy focuses on the brain’s more holistic, electrical ability rather than just the chemical balance or imbalance. LENS Neurofeedback is a transformative tool that blends scientific insight with compassionate care, providing clients with real-time insights into their brain activity. LENS is not just about helping clients feel better, it’s also about showing clients the tangible changes in their brain activity, allowing them to see and track their

progress. Each session is individually tailored to each client’s need and provides a comprehensive view of a client’s journey, including the meaningful milestones achieved toward better mental and emotional health. The combination of tailored treatment, visible progress, and effective feedback offers clients long-term growth and is a great form of therapy to feel informed, supported, and empowered in the journey of mental health and progress.

Individual Counseling, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Infrared Sauna Therapy, Enneagram Coaching, and Mental Wellness in the Workplace are also offered at IOME. Combining these services has a unique ability to complement other therapeutic modalities, enhancing overall wellness. As we enter the new year, it’s essential to take proactive steps toward nurturing our mental health and Becky likes to remind people to take the following preventative measures:

• Prioritize Self-Care

• Stay Connected

• Engage in Physical Activity

• Establish a Routine

• Practice Mindfulness and Breathing Exercises

• Set Small, Achievable Goals

• Limit Exposure to Stressors/Triggers

• Seek Professional Support

Investing in your mental health is a lifelong journey, and the new year is a perfect opportunity to prioritize your well-being. Remember, asking for help and taking small steps toward a healthier, more balanced life is okay! To learn more about IOME and its preventative wellness support, including memberships, visit their clinic at 1180 Main Street, Unit 2 in Windsor, call them at 970-200-8783, or visit their website at www.IOweMeNow.com.

JADE LOTUS HEALING: Where Care Meets WELLNESS

The inspiration behind a career in bodywork which led to the opening of Jade Lotus Healing dates back to when Christina Thrutchley was a young girl. After her mother had been in an accident, Christina stepped in to help take care of running the house and meeting her mother's personal needs like bathing and dressing. Being in the caretaker role put her in touch with her desire to be supportive as a caregiver, and she wanted to carry that on through adulthood.

She considered massage as a career path, but motherhood found her at an earlier-than-expected age, and a move overseas with her military husband led her to take on different careers. Feeling the draw to a bodywork profession working with people to help them feel comfortable in their bodies and find nervous system balance, she stepped into teaching where she could work with young children and “give them all her love.” She then transitioned into nannying, the position that led her to Colorado as she and her mènage moved along with her nanny family. This move prompted her to dig deeper into discovering what she wanted to do. One night after experiencing a vivid dream, she visualized the word “massage” on her wall. Over the next several days she consistently received indications about doing bodywork, being

hands-on, and helping people relieve the pain in their bodies. Decidedly, she attended Front Range to receive a degree in Integrative Health and certification in Massage Therapy. She also took Healing Touch classes and became a Reiki master.

Christina emphasizes the complementary nature of different modalities in promoting overall well-being. Massage works with the outward manifestation of stress levels and pain resulting from the busyness of life. Reiki and Healing Touch address more of the energetic levels. She explains that every human being is made of energy. She is a facilitator who helps people hold on to what they need and let go of what they don’t through the release of energy blockages. She stresses the importance of respect and receiving consent before working with someone’s energy in much the same way you would ask permission to give a hug to someone.

Jade Lotus Healing is a massage and wellness center that offers massage, Reiki, esthetician services, light therapy, yoga, meditation, and community outreach including monthly breathwork classes and a women’s game group. They work with a diverse clientele, including veterans, seniors, first responders, businesspeople, and children and adults with special and higher needs.

To facilitate your own health and wellness, Christina offers some helpful suggestions:

• Stay hydrated.

• Check in on your posture throughout the day.

• Take small breaks to check in with your body and make necessary adjustments.

Jade Lotus can be found at 745 Jackson Court, Windsor, CO. You can book a service on their website at  https://www.jlhealing.com/book-now or by calling 970-703-3440. Let Christina, Annie, Ash, and Kristina help you on your self-care journey.

“My clients’ comfort is my foremost concern, and I always tell them, ‘If there’s anything that’s making you uncomfortable, whether it’s pressure, whether you’re just having a moment and you need a break, let me know. It’s your session.’”

Monthly Book Review by Words of Windso r

The New Year often inspires fresh starts and self-reflection. While Sam doesn’t typically create an extensive bucket list of yearly “To-Dos,” she firmly believes in the importance of understanding what we truly want from life. For her, Start With Why by Simon Sinek has been a cornerstone on this journey of self-discovery.

Sinek’s writings frequently draw on business examples, as these scenarios are familiar to many of us. However, the lessons extend far beyond the workplace. Whether in our homes, families, businesses, volunteer efforts, or community interactions, we all need a clear understanding of who we are, what we aim to achieve, and how we can collaborate with others to move forward.

It’s easy to observe what someone—or a business—does, whether that’s selling books, writing books, crafting furniture, or pursuing countless other endeavors. But uncovering the deeper Why behind those actions is challenging because it’s intangible. Yet, understanding our Why is essential; without it, our efforts risk becoming aimless, like wheels spinning without traction.

This year, instead of compiling a list of “What-to-Dos,” let’s give ourselves the gift of digging deep to uncover our “Why-we-Dos.” At Words of Windsor, we look forward to supporting you on your journey of self-discovery.

Words of Windsor is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Simon Sinek's Start with Why is a great book to incorporate in your journey to self-discovery.
