Christina’s Recommendations for Your Home this Spring
ARTICLE BY CHRISTINA KODER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHOTOS BY DIANDRA
Spring in Colorado is an exciting time of renewal and growth. The unique mix of sunshine and lingering winter weather offers a prime opportunity to enhance your home’s appeal and functionality. Here are some of Christina’s recommendations to make your property shine this spring:
1. Exterior Maintenance:
Winter can be harsh on your home’s exterior. Start by inspecting your roof for damage, cleaning gutters, and checking downspouts for clogs. Examine the siding, windows, and foundation. A pressure wash can revive the exterior, making it look fresh and inviting.
2. Landscape Revival:
Spring is prime time to boost curb appeal. Prune trees and shrubs, reseed patchy areas in the lawn, and add vibrant, cold-resistant flowers like pansies or snapdragons. Mulch garden beds for a polished look while retaining soil moisture.
3. Invest in Exterior Detailing:
Beyond basic maintenance, consider adding a pop of color
with a fresh coat of paint on your front door or shutters. Replace aging house numbers and enhance the entryway with modern light fixtures for a polished first impression.
4. Enhance Outdoor Living Spaces:
We love outdoor living, so make your decks and patios irresistible. Add weather-resistant furniture, stylish outdoor rugs and planters with cool-season flowers. String lights or a small fire feature can turn your backyard into a sought-after sanctuary.
5. Interior Refresh:
Go beyond cleaning and introduce fresh, spring-inspired elements. Swap out heavy drapes for sheer curtains to invite natural light. Introduce spring tones with throws, pillows, or floral arrangements to create a bright, welcoming space
These thoughtful improvements will not only enhance your living experience but also boost your home’s market appeal if you’re considering selling.
LEARN MORE: If you’re considering selling your home, spring is the perfect time to list! Contact Christina today to explore your options and receive a personalized market evaluation tailored to your property. Make the most of this vibrant season to showcase your home!

YOUR LOCAL BOOKSTORE LOCATED AT 631 BIRCH STREET, UNIT B WINDSOR
Sam Webb's only exposure to companion planting strategy was in elementary school when she learned about the Native American practice of the three sisters – corn, beans, and squash. She didn’t really pay that much attention to the concept. This is why she was so pleased to find and share Companion Planting for Beginners by Brian Lowell and Plant Partners by Jessica Walliser. Both teach from a science-based perspective so a trial-and-error approach isn't necessary. Companion Planting for Beginners, much as its name says, is a great book for those just starting. It talks about garden planning, soil prep, watering needs, and even how to attract the right bugs with plant groupings. Of particular interest is the last chapter, which is organized by vegetables desired in gardens and which plants to pair with them.
Plant Partners on the other hand is for the more experienced gardener and while there are chapters on topics such as soil preparation, weed management, etc. it’s much for someone who knows the basics. “Living mulch” or "growing sorghum" were not topics Sam had ever really thought about before. The book focuses on vegetable gardens and sometimes offers suggestions on pairings with flowering plants that can make for a gorgeous garden.
No matter where you are on your companion planting journey these two books will be of immense help. The store is open 10 am-6 pm Monday through Saturday and 1 pm-5 pm on Sundays.

Paige Carey Transforms Homes & Lives through Compassionate Organizing and Practical Systems for Busy Families
ARTICLE
The gift of organization was evident early in Paige Carey’s life when her mother noticed her lining up her shoes in her closet at just two years old!
After a career in marketing and becoming a mother herself, Paige re-evaluated her professional goals. Her entrepreneurial spirit and love of organization led her to open Paige Carey Organizing, where she could nurture her passion for helping others. Desiring to empower other women to rediscover their confidence after having kids enabled her to build an amazing team.
Some of the most common organizational challenges Paige faces with her clients include letting go of sentimental items, the lack of systems that accommodate daily routines, the different organizing styles of family members, time management, and maintenance.
CONTINUED >
Paige recognizes the importance of compassionate listening and genuine appreciation for the stories attached to one’s belongings to help ease the delicate process of downsizing. She recommends using memory boxes for sentimental items and thinking in terms of the value such items bear with kids or other family members.
A helpful tip she offers is the 20/20 rule. Can the item be replaced in twenty minutes for $20 or less? If the item is easily replaceable and hasn’t been used within the last year, it’s time to let go.
Daily systems that align with a family’s routine and where everything has a “home” can smooth differences in organizing styles and make things easier for families. For instance, establish stations where kids can make their lunches and pack their backpacks, dedicate a shelf in the pantry for dinner items, and designate an area for collecting kids’ school work in a place that complements the natural path of movement—typically near the door most commonly used to exit.
Paige encourages the labeling of every item’s “home” so each family member can follow the system, no matter their organizing style.
To address the issues of time management and maintenance, Paige suggests setting a daily timer to perform a 10-minute sweep of living spaces that the whole family can get in on. This will keep your beautifully organized areas looking that way. Surprisingly, just 10 minutes a day makes a significant impact!
By the way, after making your spaces not only gorgeous but functional as well, Paige and her team offer a maintenance plan. They understand how busy life gets and want to help maintain peaceful organization in their clients’ homes.
After an initial consultation with a client, Paige considers the aesthetics of their home when creating an organizational plan. She tailors it to the feel
“A home should be a sanctuary to relax and build memories with loved ones. A lack of organization can cause stress and overwhelm.”
of their home and the client’s preferences, then shares her ideas before moving forward. In that way, her organizational plans are personalized and unique to suit each client and their lifestyle.
A home should be a sanctuary to relax and build memories with loved ones. A lack of organization can cause stress and overwhelm. Paige suggests practicing the 10-minute daily clean-up, starting small, creating simple systems that match natural habits, employing the one-in-one-out rule, setting realistic expectations, and practicing grace. Her mantra? Declutter, sort, organize, repeat.
Paige loves being a business owner in the supportive community of Windsor.

A flawless new roof by Slaughter
seamlessly into
When Mike Slaughter started Slaughter Roofing in 1987, almost 40 years ago, he did all the shingling and construction work himself. As the business grew, he took on more help with the labor, and it became apparent to Mike and his wife, Virginia that more attention was needed in the office. Mike and Virginia have worked together full-time for the past 30 years, with Virginia managing the office and Mike managing sales and production. Every business has growing pains and Mike and Virginia have learned that just like in a marriage, the challenges teach you how strong you are together and set you up for more success.
For the first 26 years, Slaughter Roofing operated out of Mike and Virginia’s home and a warehouse. “This kept us very cozy and involved 24/7,” said Virginia. “That has been the biggest joy and the biggest challenge.” Mike and Virginia find their strengths complement each other and contribute to the success of Slaughter Roofing. “Mike is very business and production-oriented, and I am detail-oriented,” said Virginia. “Those gifts work very well together and produce our amazing company today.” Through it all, Mike and Virginia speak fondly of the relationships they have developed with the people they serve and the joy they have found in getting to know other couples in the roofing business. “Our favorite part of our business is by far the people…” Mike said. “We love meeting new people, reconnecting with old friends, and providing a service they are both satisfied with and can depend on. We are not just replacing a roof or fixing a leak, we are protecting what’s inside – the things you love the most.”
CONTINUED >
Slaughter Roofing is dedicated to taking the fear out of getting a new roof by educating its customers personally. “We’ve developed a hands-on approach to walking our customers through the repair or replacement process,” Mike added. “Hiring a roofing company can be daunting but our goal is to make the process simple and straightforward.”
While many companies like Slaughter Roofing focus on expanding their business to increase profits, the Slaughters have chosen to follow a less conventional path and remain a small business in Northern Colorado. “We’ve chosen to stay in Northern Colorado because scale creates distance and our value is in the community that we have roots planted in,” Mike said. “We love Northern Colorado and it’s a privilege to be a part of this community.” The Slaughters know that residents of this area, many of whom are their friends, are tired of high-pressure salespeople who come in after a storm. Slaughter Roofing, remaining community-oriented and striving to be a good neighbor, keeps its process straightforward.
“One of our core values: to invest in the well-being of our community and the neighborhoods we live and work in.”

and the neighborhoods we live and work in.” In addition to their commitment to customer service, the Slaughters give back to the community to demonstrate their gratitude for a great place for their family and business to grow and thrive. “Part of our mission as a local business is to be a good neighbor,” Mike said. “Every year we partner with several local organizations we believe are working to better this community. Some of the groups we have worked with are Weld Food Bank, Boys & Girls Club of Weld County, and Big Bones Canine Rescue.” Slaughter Roofing was even recognized by the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs of Weld County as the 2024 Champion of Youth.
Staying locally focused has also allowed the Slaughters to uphold one of their core values: “to invest in the well-being of our community
Every day, members of Slaughter Roofing strive to build relationships with their community, meet the needs of their customers, and strengthen their hometown. The Slaughter family hopes that if they were to close their doors tomorrow, the impact they left on the community could be measured in more than just how many shingles they laid. The team at Slaughter Roofing is more than just good roofers, they’re good neighbors. mike@slaughter-roofing.com | 970-330-7881

April McClure and Aaron Havens, owners of Sky Service Pros know that keeping windows clean really opens up a home by letting natural light in and exposing those often ignored nooks and crannies. In some cases, it even makes the atmosphere feel cleaner and bigger. Clean windows allow homeowners to “focus on what matters inside their home instead of being distracted by the dirt and dog snoots.” Clean windows make everything more clear!
Discounted service plans are a commonality at many window-cleaning services, including Sky Service Pros. Multiple services, including window washing and gutter cleaning, are available through Sky Service Pros and can be scheduled regularly for hassle-free home upkeep. Homeowners can enjoy effortless maintenance and flexibility with recurring services. Let cadence and quality be the responsibility of Sky Service Pros!
Keeping windows and gutters in optimal condition adds value to a home whereas hard water stains, ripped screens, and clogged gutters depreciate it. April and Aaron work hard to keep windows and gutters at their best because they believe that homeowners, the Queens and Kings of a “castle,” deserve to enjoy a home that is loved and cared for! Contact Sky Service Pros at 970-306-6139.
Illusions Complete Home Solutions’ services elevate the impact of homes, offering whole-house, kitchen, and bathroom remodels, basement finishes, interior design, window treatments, furniture, accessories, and more. For aesthetic appeal, they suggest creating a beautiful wood accent wall or a custom mantel. A fresh coat of paint changes the look of any space. Draperies or other window treatments soften a space and add color and texture.
Business partners and spouses Stacy and Aaron Alms love creating timeless spaces for their clients, ensuring clients’ investments are well-spent long-term. Trends and innovations focus on clients’ specific needs while incorporating creativity to remain unique.
Hiring professionals when making meaningful updates saves money on products and selections and ensures quality construction. Choose professionals who listen to your vision and lifestyle preferences and are enjoyable to work with, assuring a stress-free, fun, and memorable experience.

There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment.
The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home!
By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room.
Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are

many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the home, house plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus.
Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends. Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants.
Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot.
Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls.
No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature and to reconnect with the living world. We all benefit from the additional life that houseplants bring into our homes. In this crazy world of ours, wouldn’t be it nice to return home to your own personal indoor greenspace?
Happy gardening!
