Fun & Interesting Facts

Information about NOLA & Louisiana

Among the holdings of the Louisiana State Museum is a death mask of the face of Napoleon Bonaparte, cast by his attending physicians a day and a half after Napoleon died on the island of St. Helena. The Fair Grounds in New Orleans was the first racetrack to introduce a mechanical starting gate and the first to glass-enclose and steam-heat the grandstand, in 1924.

The Battle of New Orleans, which made Andrew Jackson a national hero, was fought two weeks after the War of 1812 had ended and more than a month before the news of the war's end had reached Louisiana. Louisiana is the only state with a large population of Cajuns, descendants of the Acadians who were driven out of Canada in the 1700s because they wouldn't pledge allegiance to the King of England.

In Louisiana, biting someone with your natural teeth is considered a simple assault, but biting someone with your false teeth is considered an aggravated assault. The Saint Charles streetcar line in New Orleans and the San Francisco, California cable cars are the nation's only mobile national monuments.

Tabasco, a Louisiana pepper sauce bottled on Avery Island by the McIlhenny Company, holds the second oldest food trademark in the U.S. Patent Office.

Gallery Burguieres Debuts Cocoally When local artist Ally Burguieres opened her French Quarter gallery three years ago, she could not have anticipated becoming a staple in the new parent community. “I was shocked to realize how much my art resonated with young mothers and fathers,” the thirty-year old artist says. “My work has always focused on animals and nostalgia, and I think new parents get excited to share art that is meaningful and sentimental with their children.” Burguieres’s Notebook Series, a collection of large-scale paintings designed to look like drawings on looseleaf paper, reminds art lovers of school days spent sketching and doodling. Her newest venture — a line of onesies, toddler tees, and adult clothing created under the name Cocoally —transforms her sweet animals and sentimental images into wearable art. The name Cocoally is a combination of the artist’s first name, Ally, and the name of her rescue Chihuahua (and constant companion), Cocoa. “The purity and innocence animals embody is one of my favorite inspirations,” Burguieres says. “To me, animals and children display the same curiosity, eagerness, and love of life that translates beautifully into art.” Cocoally clothes feature many of the animals and images her collectors have come to love, along with some new patterns exclusive to the Cocoally line. “I’m playing around with patterned scarves for the moms and dads,” Burguieres says. Many of these patterns complement the baby onesies and toddlers tees, offering parents a chance to playfully coordinate with their children. “Being a new parent is a such a fun time,” Burguieres adds. “It’s a time to enjoy life, share moments, and create family bonds.” Cocoally is available in Gallery Burguieres at 736 Royal Street. Select styles can also be found at Ragdoll at 818 Royal Street, Nola Potter at 240 Pelican Avenue on Algiers Point, and top boutiques around New Orleans. Page 30
