I

n 1910, the Acme Cafe was opened on Royal Street in the French Quarter. Acme has been pleasing palates of discriminating diners ever since. After a disastrous fire in 1924,The Cafe was re-established as Acme Oyster House around the corner at 724 Iberville, where it still operates today. In the early 1980’s when business slowed for many French Quarter businesses, Acme closed at 4:00 and had only one waitress on staff. This prompted Acme to make the now famous “Waitress available sometimes” neon sign, which is proudly displayed in each restaurant and on the menu. Despite the lack of business, and staff, native New Orleanian Mike Rodrigue recognized the potential. He bought Acme Oyster House in 1985 and revived the charming New Orleans’ institution. Acme served about 250,000 raw and chargrilled oysters in Mike’s first year. 23 years and four new locations later, Acme shucked well over 3.6 million fresh oysters in 2008. That’s almost 10,000 oysters a day and doesn’t even include the fried ones. The famous New Orleans Oyster Jubilee Festival was started in 2007 as another way to celebrate the food, music and culture of New Orleans. There’s live music, an oyster shucking contest and the world’s longest oyster po-boy. Acme supplies thousands of oysters for the Oyster Jubilee Festival and, along with other famous French Quarter restaurants, each cook enough oysters for a 20 foot section of the monstrous po-boy. It ends up being over 350 feet long and stuffed with more than 5,000 oysters. The Acme Oyster House has been the quintessential French Quarter home for our own boisterous wordsmiths over the past 100 years at the southeast end of the bar. Although the quality of the spoken word tends to be slurred as the sun goes down, the minds remain sharp in the discussion of politics and sports. The Corner continues to be a source for information on the latest lines, prognostications of business, legal and athletic competitions. 100 years the French Quarter has taught us many things. How to throw a good party is one of them.Let us show you what we’ve learned during your next celebration. Each Acme Oyster House can accommodate parties or business meetings of 20 to 300. Famous for it’s 15 Dozen Club, the Acme Oyster House Challenge is no fish story. The Acme Oyster House 15 Dozen Club has had over 150 people who have tried this shell shocking challenge. Adam Richman of Man Vs Food. Shoveling 3-4 at a time in his mouth, finished the challenge in just over 21 minutes, claiming another Man vs Food victory, and the 29th position on the wall of fame at Acme Oyster House.

There has to be more than just great seafood to make a New Orleans’ restaurant famous. For Acme, maybe it’s eating under the glow of neon lights, or the checkerboard tablecloths, or enjoying a good meal with close friends and complete strangers at the same time. Maybe it’s the ice cold beer. Whatever it is, we’re glad you like it. Thanks to everyone for a great first hundred years. 724 Iberville Street | New Orleans, LA 70130 | 504.522.5973 Page 28
