Exercise1: Design your first spread Locate and scan or plan and take 10-14 photos to tell the story of your life. Write a primary and secondary headline to describe your story. Write a creative feature story to add to your page. In addition, write captions for each photo and add a mini-headline describing each photo. Sketch your design on grid paper first. Include these elements: • Headline (primary and secondary) • Photos • Captions/idents • A story Remember to use traditional internal margins (one pica between all elements) on your spread, as shown on the sketch. Now use your sketch as a “road map” and design the spread in the online program, as shown on the sample online design spread. Save your online design as a Standard PDF and send it to your teacher for grading. For a review of how to design a spread in the online program, go to this link to see an instructional video.

Exercise: Design your second spread Examine your first design. Is your dominant photo vertical or horizontal? Using the same photos, design a spread with the dominant in an opposite format. In other words, if your dominant on your first design was horizontal, your second design should feature a vertical dominant, and vice versa. Sketch your design on grid paper first. (Add website links to the sketch in the online design program) Include these elements: • Headline (primary and secondary) • Photos • Captions/idents • Your story Remember to use one-pica internal margins between all elements. Now use your sketch as a “road map” and design the spread in the online program. Save your online design as a Standard PDF and send it to your teacher for grading. Tight - 3 points between photos: Used in mods to show that photos are related to each other. Expanded - 3-4 picas: Used to separate and highlight modules to draw readers to those elements. Now use your sketch as a “road map” and design the spread in the online program. (Add link to finished online design) Save your online design as a Standard PDF and send it to your teacher for grading.
