Why include modules?

Adding secondary modules makes your book more inclusive of the student body. It increases coverage and helps you sell more books.

Before designing:

Use the bubble sheet to plan your content. Select your topic and angle. Determine your primary area of focus and supplemental areas to cover. Take or assign photos that tell the story for each module and choose the photos you will use on your spread.

Finalize spread with designed headline, story, photos & quotes

1. Use your plan as your guide for design. 2. Place the dominant photo first near the center of the spread. Remember to keep faces away from the gutter. 3. Build your primary photo module first using traditional one-pica inner margins to hold the module together. (Some schools use a half-pica between photos in all modules, including the primary photo area.) 4. Write and place captions on or near the photos, adding mini-headlines to reflect photo content. 5. Design and build secondary coverage modules. Include titles and captions or idents. Title designs should reflect the look of the primary and secondary headlines. 6. Design a primary headline using theme type and a contrasting typeface. Add a secondary headline to further explain spread content. Include a short story, if needed. Place photos and quotes in the headline design to add depth to the coverage.

Curriculum: Design chapter 4 - pages 25-34 Exercise 2 Use the bubble sheet to plan a story about the first day of school or an event occurring early in the year. Assign or take photos to tell the story of each module using the expanded plan sheet. On grid paper, sketch your design based on your plan.
