Exercise 1: Design your first spread Use the bubble sheet to plan a story about the first day of school or an event occurring early in the year. Assign or take photos to tell the story of each module. Sketch your design on grid paper first. Include these elements: • Headline (primary and secondary) • Photos • Captions/idents • A story, space permitting • Modules placed to the outside of the design. Remember to use the three types of internal margins on your design: Traditional - one-pica: Used in the major photo module to “hold” the mod together. Tight - 3 points between photos: Used in mods to show that photos are related to each other. Expanded - 3-4 picas: Used to separate and highlight modules to draw readers to those elements. Now use your sketch as a “road map” and design the spread in the online program. Add photos to your design and save it as a Standard PDF. Send the PDF to your teacher for grading. Note the final design. For a review of how to design a spread in the online program, go to this instructional video.
