Plan module three

Lesson 1: Elementary schools How to use the

Bubble sheet Expanding your coverage

Including every student in the book at least three times is a challenge. Planning is the key to meeting that goal. Using the bubble sheet to brainstorm ideas for photos and secondary modules helps staffers include more students in the book and gives them direction when designing spreads.

Start with a plan:

1.Topic: Using the bubble sheet to plan your content, choose an event to cover. In this example, Field Day is the topic.

Plan module four

Angle: Add an angle to use when covering the event. The angle is the unique way you will cover the event. Because each year is different, the angle changes each year. In this instance, staffers will include coverage of students practicing for Field Day and photos of the actual competition. Main module: This part of the bubble sheet becomes the main photo module. Staffers will also include captions, a headline and, space permitting, a story. 2. Plan your first secondary coverage module. In this part of the design, staffers will interview students practicing for the event and ask them to talk about why they love it. 3. In your second module, staffers will interview students about their favorite event and include their quotes and action photos of them participating in those events. 4. The third module will include close-up face photos of students and quotes about what they’ve learned from participating in Field Day.

5. The fourth module will feature a photo of the winning class with a caption. 6. When you put it all together, you can see that we will have one main photo module and four secondary coverage areas.

Exercise 1 and resources: PowerPoint Video

Curriculum: Design chapter 4 - pages 25-34 Exercise 1 Use the bubble sheet to plan a story about the first day of school or an event occurring early in the year. Assign or take photos to tell the story of each module using the expanded plan sheet. On grid paper, sketch your design based on your plan. Using your photos, headline and captions, design the spread on computer using your plan as a “road map.” Add photos to finalize your design.
