Exercise1A: Design your first spread Locate and scan or plan and take 10-14 photos to tell the story of your life. Write a primary and secondary headline to describe your story. Write a creative feature story to add to your page. In addition, write captions for each photo and add a mini-headline describing each photo. Sketch your design on grid paper first. Include these elements: • Headline (primary and secondary) • Photos • Captions/idents • Your story Remember to use one-pica internal margins between all elements. See sketched design. Now use your sketch as a “road map” and design the spread in the online program. See finished online design. Now add photos to your design. Exercise 1B: Design your second spread Examine your first design. Is your dominant photo vertical, square or horizontal? Using the same photos or choosing a different topic with photos, design a spread with the dominant in a different format. In other words, if your dominant on your first design was horizontalor square, your second design should feature a vertical dominant, and vice versa. Sketch your design on grid paper first. Include these elements: • Headline (primary and secondary) • Photos • Captions/idents • Your story Remember to use one-pica internal margins between all elements. See sketched design.
