Place captions to the outside or on photos, if necessary

Step

Step

Place smaller photos, working from the inside to the outside

1. Choose your best storytelling picture as the dominant image and place it first near the center of the spread, but not in dead center. Remember to keep faces out of the gutter (space between the two facing pages). 2. Place smaller photos one pica (one-sixth of an inch) away from the dominant and other photos. 3. Continue adding smaller pictures, placing each one pica away from the dominant and other pictures. 4. Place captions to the outside portion of the design, using small headlines to reflect the content of each image. 5. Continue adding smaller pictures using contrast in size and shape (vertical vs. horizontal). If necessary, place a caption on a photo, using a semi-transparent box behind the caption so it is readable.

Finalize spread with designed headline and story

Step

Step

Add smaller photos while maintaining one-pica inner margins

6. Design a primary headline using theme type and a contrasting typeface. Add a secondary headline to further explain spread content. Include a short story, if needed. Headlines can also include photos and quotes to add depth to coverage.
