From the Chairman’s Table

September is here. As we enter the third quarter of 2024, I am sure many are reflecting asking where the year has gone. So far the year has been extremely busy for LEEASA and its director with many items being dealt with at the same time.

We have the up coming Electra Mining Africa show where we are hosting a CPD conference and a forklift competition with Lifting Africa. A lot of work and planning have gone into these events to make them a success. With many hours and many site visits being completed.

The Electra Mining LEEASA Conference will take place between the 4th-5th of September 2024 with all new topics to be presented. This included Richard Oldknow who is a international Yoke Industrial Corp representative and a member of the LEEA International Technical Committee, who will grace us with his presence and presentations over the 2 days. We are sure these will add great value.

There will be a host of other topics that will too add great value which include:

• Industry trends and digitisation – Yoke Industrial Corp

• Annual Update and concerns - Department of Employment and Labour (DEL)

• Advanced Racking and Forklift Operations in Modern Mining – ACROW

• Major Inspections and Special Assessments – CrEng

We also have the forklift competition at Electra Mining

that adds a great interactive event for LEEASA and stakeholders. We encourage all LMI’s or LME’s that have forklift operators with valid forklift operator licenses to attend and stand a chance to win BIG cash prizes. This includes for 1st place – R 15 000.00, for 2nd place – R 10 000.00 and for 3rd place – R 5 000.00. More information is available on our Linkedin and the registration link is provided. This event was a great success in 2022 and we look forward to making it even bigger in 2024.

Over the past few weeks we have met with ECSA to try and resolve some issues with regards to registration and industry concerns. We are making progress on these issues however we will be able to make even more once the events are behind us and more structures are put into place.

With that LEEASA and The Department of Employment and Labour (DEL) has engaged with The Chamber of Engineering Technology (COET) to try establish a working relationship within the industry. The meeting was held a few weeks ago and we managed to establish the framework for what is required to move the industry forward. This includes the establishment of the DMR Forum which will be a forum that is chaired by the DEL and will engage periodically to work together on industry issues. We are scheduled to have the next meeting in September. We will update members on progress with regards to this forum regularly.

LEEASA is looking at trying to establish a formal trade for LMI’s to formalise a qualification. This may take some time but we are actively working on it with key stakeholders to get this to fruition.

LEEASA will be advertising for a permanent employee over the next few weeks to come on and assist with day to day tasks and driving the association growth. This will be communicated and advertised to all members. We are looking for a knowledgeable individual , that has great communication and entrepreneurial skills to come on board. This is how we will be able to give more value to our members and drive growth to do more.

LEEASA has put into production our first of many inspection tools to be released to the market to aid stakeholders in their daily tasks. We have produced

Bobcat Forklifts to benefit from company’s innovation and R&D

After the addition of Doosan forklifts to Bobcat’s compact machine portfolio and the rebranding that has led, among other things, to the replacement of the Doosan brand with the striking Bobcat decal design on the forklifts, the company intends that the forklift line will benefit significantly from the many innovations that Bobcat has developed in recent years for its compact machines.

In fact, Bobcat has confirmed that the focus of its R&D approach in this area will be in improving connectivity, performance, sustainability and safety.

Thanks to the acquisition of sister company, Doosan Industrial Vehicle,

which manufactured a leading line of forklift trucks and warehouse equipment, Bobcat can now offer its customers an even more complete package of material handling solutions.

The rebranded Doosan equipment builds on the existing compact loaders and telehandlers from Bobcat, which can be equipped with attachments such as buckets, grabs, bale clamps, dump hoppers and pallet forks, so they can be used in many industries for material handling and logistics work. The forklift range alone consists of dozens of models, including diesel forklifts with a lifting capacity of 2 to 16 tonne; LPG forklift trucks with a lifting capacity of 1.5 to 7 tonne and electric forklift trucks with a lifting capacity of 1.5 to 10 tonne.

R&D and Innovation

Not only do the ranges of machines from Bobcat fit together almost seamlessly, it is the same for the

philosophies behind them. They share a focus on robust, powerful machines that can work long hours and require little maintenance. Optimal comfort, ease of operation and safety for the driver are also important principles for R&D.

Product development has led to a number of interesting innovations at Bobcat.

These include the electric machines that Bobcat has presented to the market in recent years, with the E10e and E19e mini-excavators now available for purchase in Europe, the fully electric T7X track loader in a limited launch in North America and the S7X skid-steer loader and the recently revealed TL25.60e electric telehandler concept machines, being the most eye-catching. In addition, the MaxControl remote control for machines and MachineIQ for remote monitoring of machines have also been introduced. With

the latter tool, the status and performance of machines can be monitored and optimized.

Data and Connectivity

But developments will go even further. Vijayshekhar Nerva, responsible for innovation at Bobcat EMEA, confirms the four key principles for R&D outlined above. The first is connectivity.

Companies have access to enormous amounts of data that are important for their activities and that data must be available in real time and in the machines as well. It also concerns the performance and productivity of machines.

They must function optimally when carrying out work. The third principle is sustainability. This not only concerns emissions, but also the use of sustainable, robust materials in the production of machines and ease of maintenance, so that machines last longer.

Enhancing Safety and Efficiency

At Bobcat’s recent Demo Days event for the EMEA region,

visitors were able to see the very latest developments in the fourth segment of safety and efficiency.

They included new Operator Presence technology that leverages a 3D time-of-flight (ToF) camera to monitor users’ movements and the cab environment, enhancing safety by preventing unintended machine actions.

The Pedestrian Detection Camera uses AI-enabled processing capabilities to differentiate between humans and surroundings, reducing unnecessary operator alerts.

Bobcat’s transparent OLED (T-OLED) screen technology, developed with LG and BSI Research, enables operators to access various functionalities without taking their eyes off the worksite. This technology facilitates advanced applications like real-time virtual reality (VR) simulations for utility line mapping.

Electric Forklifts

Bobcat has recently showcased innovations for logistics and

material handling. These include prototypes of the B18NT electric forklift truck with 3 wheels and a lithium battery and the B30X-7 Plus hydrogen forklift truck.

An important expansion now on the market is the new NXE series of electric forklift trucks with 4-wheel drive.

The series consists of forklift trucks with a capacity of 6 to 10 tonne, which are suitable for heavy applications in container transport, machine construction and industry.

These zero-emission machines can work an entire day on a battery charge and are of course very suitable for work in factories and warehouses.

The machines offer excellent visibility and (in Bobcat style) a lot of comfort and features as standard that make operation easier.

Visual and audio safety when lifting and lowering loads with a crane

The hazards and solutions of lifting and lowering loads from mobile and tower cranes, whilst identifying areas for improvement and providing a more effective and proportionate approach to safe maneuvering of loads. It also discusses ways to increase safety and efficiency.

No sight below the crane hook

Although cranes are designed to lift and move heavy objects safely, they pose a number of potential hazards. The most common cause of fatalities is workers or bystanders who are struck by an object that fall from the cranes. Other causes include being run over by a crane, falling from a crane, and electrocution. When a crane operator is lifting and lowering loads there are blind spots, they are unable to see the loads below the hook or boom or actively be able to gauge the surrounding area.

This can be hazardous for the crane operator, who is unable to see, for example:

• The load

• Grounds crew below

• Equipment on the construction site

• Surrounding buildings

• Overhead power lines

All can cause accidents to personnel and damage to expensive equipment. And halt construction incurring heavy costs.

What is the solution

A large number of accidents could be avoided onsite with cranes with audio and visual systems installed.

Crane operators will have an unobstructed view from their crane cab and know where the load is below the hook at all times, and the surrounding area.

With this added safety precaution operators will have an advantage with the following:

• Visually see if a load becomes unstable

• Notice rigging failures

• Accurately steer loads into tight or awkward spaces

• See clear instruction from crew

• Avoid crew on the ground

• Quickly alert crew on the ground of possible hazard

• Avoid surrounding buildings

• Prevent expensive damage to assets

• Improve efficiency

Where is the crane hook

Not knowing where the crane hook is on a construction site can potentially be hazardous.

Traditionally: The distance between the horn, often located near the operator’s cab, and the load, is inconsistent and does not efficiently warn site personnel to the position of the hook block or load. The same can be said for airhorns or whistles when used by riggers. In both scenarios, the attention of the work force is diverted to where the sound is coming from, as opposed

to the hazard. When the grounds crew are unaware of the movement of loads this can cause damage and even fatality!

Hazards include:

• Grounds crew injuries

• Assets damaged

• Damage to surrounding buildings

• Falling loads

Remember: When working around a crane, the crane operator is going to be watching his load or the signal person and not for stray workers.

What is the solution

Fit an audio warning system to the hook block. When activated, the consistent proximity between the hook block and the load enhances the efficiency of the audio warning system and draws attention to the hazard, not away from it.

This will improve safety and efficiency:

• The ground crew more aware of moving loads

• Increase awareness of the proximity of the load

• Protect assets from damage

• Help to prevent accidents or even fatalities

What is a BlokCam

BlokCam is a crane camera system specifically designed to aid a crane operator to visually see the loads attached below the hook or boom from any crane cab. The sound and view from below the camera is transmitted and received wirelessly via the antenna systems to a screen in the cab. This allows the operator to see and hear the load and surroundings, giving an unobstructed, live, audiovisual feed of the critical areas that working in the blind would never allow.

There are two crane camera systems:

M3L - For crawler & mobile cranes

This consists of four main componenets:

• M3 Monitor

• S5 Sensor

• T3 Transmitter

• B6 Lithium Battery

X3L - For tower & large crawler cranes

This consists of six main componenets:

• M2 Monitor

• S5 Sensor

• T3 Transmitter

• R5 Repeater

• P3 Processor

• B6 Lithium Battery

What is a BlokAlert

BlokAlert is a crane audio system specifically designed to aid the grounds crew when loads are being moved via a crane. When activated by the lifting crew, the BlokAlert receiver gives out a recognisable audiovisual signal that can be seen and heard by site personnel in proximity to the hook block or load.

BlokAlert - Any crane

This consists of two main components:

• BA-R1 Reciever

• 60009 Remote control fob

Handsfree footswitch available on request. Easily operated and installed. With the control of up to 4 BlokAlert systems across sites.

Industries affected

Any industries utilising cranes can be affected by crane related accidents. Our research and feedback from customers clearly points to the fact that crane camera and alert systems greatly reduce the hazards, injuries (sometimes fatal) and bring construction to a halt. Causing spiralling costs and late deadlines!

Improve safety and efficiency summary

It is without doubt that with more tools on site such crane cameras will greatly reduce the risks for crane drivers and groundsmen, while audio awareness of where the crane hook and load are located will greatly increase safety on the ground of constructions sites. This will mean less manpower aiding the crane driver and enhance communications to the crew below, increasing efficiency, saving time and helping to prevent injury and expensive accidents. Crosby BlokCam developed this system to aid all of the above, their customer testimonials prove that these systems are needed on construction sites. “Health and safety is our highest priority. Crosby BlokCam crane cameras help to ensure that crane operators on our sites have an unobstructed view of blind spots from inside the cab.” BAM

More reach, strength, and flexibility with new Grove rough-terrain cranes

Manitowoc has launched two new Grove rough-terrain cranes that offer best-in-class boom length and strength to set new standards for the 65 USt and 80 USt classes. The GRT765 and GRT780 also deliver improved operator comfort and easier servicing inside a compact design package.

Deliveries of the first units will begin in the second half of 2024, and the new models were presented in the iron for the first time to dealers and customers at

Manitowoc’s Crane Days event in Shady Grove, Pa., U.S., this past May.

John Bair, product manager for rough-terrain cranes at Manitowoc, said:

“Customers will immediately notice the significant improvements in reach and strength, but we’ve also packed a lot of other benefits into these new models. The operators will love the comfort of our new, wider cab as well as the expanded CCS display.

We’ve also added the latest productivity and fleet management technology with our MAXbase variable outrigger positioning system and the Grove CONNECT telematics platform.

Not to mention we packed all of this into a very compact and lightweight package, which makes this crane very easy to transport, as well as maneuver around busy jobsites.”

Even greater power

The Grove GRT765 replaces the RT765E-2 in the current roughterrain crane lineup. It offers a 65 USt maximum capacity and a 126 ft four-section full power boom. The Grove GRT780 will replace both the RT770E and the GRT880 in the current rough-terrain crane lineup and offers an 80 USt maximum capacity with a 155 ft five-section full-power boom.

Both models feature a 35-56 ft bi-fold swingaway jib which can be manually offset up to 45˚. For the GRT765 there is 15,200 lbs of counterweight, while the GRT780 comes with 17,500 lbs, although customers can boost this to 20,500 lbs for even greater strength. Both can add a hydraulic counterweight removal system as an option and powerful line pull is guaranteed, with both models offering 17,160 lbs on a single line for fast set-up and operation.

Transport and set-up are centered around convenience. Both cranes typically travel as one load, with the GRT765 having a GVW of approximately 94,000 lbs.

For the GRT780, GVW is 99,500 lbs (102,500 lbs with the heavy counterweight). Overall width of both is just 9.8 ft—nearly a full 1 ft narrower than typical cranes in these classes.

Set-up is compact, and owners have greater flexibility with the MAXbase variable outrigger system, which gives increased lift capacity and asymmetric configurations to easily fit on congested sites.

The cranes are the first Grove rough-terrains to offer the Grove CONNECT telematics and fleet management system launched in 2022.

For the operator, there’s a 3-in wider, full-vision cab that tilts to 20˚ and comes with a threecamera system for better visibility. Operations can be managed via the new, bigger 12-in touchscreen

CCS display that offers controls and layout that are common across the Manitowoc product line.

For service technicians, the cranes include oCSI (on Crane Service Interface) for enhanced diagnostics and service, while centrally located

service points on the superstructure and carrier make routine maintenance easier.

A sustainability plus for Hoeflon’s C6e

Electric machines are sustainable. That’s a fact. But Hoeflon customers cite the C6e’s silent operation as an absolute plus. Previously, only the sound of a diesel engine could be heard. Now the C6e works silently. Communicating alongside a running machine is now effortless.

The C6e is not only quiet but powerful too. That is obvious from the high capacity of this tremendous machine.

The Hoeflon C6e is a fully electric mini-crane. That means CO2 neutrality when you work with this machine. In more and more places, this is a firm requirement.

Construction

We use LiFePO4 battery technology. This composition has many advantages, especially when it comes to safety compared to other Li-ion batteries. The LiFePO4 battery cells cannot ignite or explode during charging/discharging. The battery has a long service life and can be charged and discharged frequently with minimal performance

and low temperatures hardly affect the battery cell.

Information about the electric crane

At a 60% duty cycle, you can run the crane for eight hours. At lower temperatures the capacity of the battery decreases and you need to recharge it more quickly. The crane is fully charged again in five hours.

• You can work and charge at the same time. The mini-crane recharges faster than it discharges.

• At low temperatures the battery warms itself up to 0 °C, at which point it starts to charge.

• The C6e can be used at temperatures of -10 to +40 °C.

• The battery’s state of charge is shown on the machine.

• Recharging is possible with 230 V and 110 V single phase.

The C6e gets the maximum capacity out of a 3-tonne mini-crane.

The C6e’s compact size allows it to easily squeeze through tight spots. The crane is just 76 cm wide and its height can be reduced to 1.86 m.

So narrow passages are no problem at all. Whether you are hoisting a jacuzzi into a backyard or placing a complete production line in a factory, the C6e does it all.

You’re standing strong

Each leg of the C6e can be positioned separately from the other legs.

The C6e has hydraulically adjustable legs, hydraulically extendable legs and folding legs.

This allows you to set the outriggers at any angle and extend them to fit the space you have. You can also easily overcome uneven terrain or obstacles.

Positioning

Hydraulically extendable legs

The C6e’s legs are hydraulically extendable. So you can attain the maximum capacity in any situation.

Hydraulically adjustable legs

The C6e’s legs are hydraulically adjustable. This means you can always place the outriggers in the optimum position to set up the crane perfectly in any workplace.

Folding

legs

The C6e has folding legs. Normally, the leg is low to the ground so it can extend under obstacles.

When placing the outriggers over an obstacle, pull out the folding leg. The folding leg also comes in handy on uneven terrain.

This enables you to compensate for a height difference of up to two metres.

Mammoet has received its first Liebherr LR12500 crane. With a capacity of 2,500t and a 200m hook height, it will help to ensure the constructability of future energy and infrastructure developments.

Seeking greater build efficiencies, projects across a range of sectors are increasing the size and scope of prefabricated construction methodologies. As a result, assurance is needed that today’s project planning will match tomorrow’s equipment.

Energy projects in both the nuclear and oil & gas sectors will rely heavily on high capacity lifting equipment to bring forward the date of first power, while increasing the cost-effectiveness

of the build phase in the case of new construction, and reducing downtime in the case of turnaround projects. Offshore wind turbine components are growing at a fast rate, with nacelles of 1,000t, tower sections of 2,000t and jackets and monopiles of 3,000t in production.

Companies across the sector need peace of mind that components currently planned can be transported and assembled by future equipment – as lead times increase, doubly so. Similarly, civil

megaprojects will depend on highcapacity lifting equipment that allow more construction to take place away from the project site, with both cost and environmental benefits.

In all cases, the new LR12500 unit will support these construction methodologies, building in larger pieces to cut down integration and transport schedules.

The LR12500 features a wide highperformance boom, which offers increased stability at reduced (self) weight.

Despite its large size, it folds into dimensions small enough to remain in-gauge. Both features increase the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of its mobilization.

A 100 meter main boom and 108 meter luffing jib help the LR12500 to reach 200m maximum hook height. Dual engines with redundancy ensure high levels of reliability, as the crane can continue operation using just one power unit.

REACH NEW HEIGHTS

Strenx® performance steel has the right strength for world’s No.1 4,000-ton crawler crane
Tension bars in Strenx® 1100 E make a safe choice in XCMG’s recordbreaking 4,000-ton crawler cranes. This lifting giant is the world’s largest crawler crane.

The XGC88000 has a maximum rated lifting moment of 88,000 ton-force meters, which translates to a maximum lifting capacity of 4,000 tons. Strenx® 1100 E has been the high-strength structural steel of choice for the Chinese company Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group Co., known as XCMG. Tension bars are components made to withstand high tensile forces and

help maintain overall stability in structures such as cranes, buildings, bridges and more. In the XGC88000, tension bars are used to secure a rigid connection between the crane booms and the counterweights on the ground. “When we design and launch a new product such as the XGC88000 crawler crane, only the most reliable materials are used to ensure lifting equipment safety,

stability and customer satisfaction.”

Technical spokesperson at XCMG Lifting equipment safety

It takes a mighty machine that can lift massive loads to operate where other types of cranes can’t. Crawler cranes are often ideal for lifting large loads at great heights and distances in tough industries like construction, oil and gas, and agriculture. And lifting equipment safety is, of course, paramount.

As a steel with high yield strength, Strenx® structural steel is designed to work under high load stresses without causing equipment failure, while providing maximum strength at a lighter weight.

The reliable, consistent mechanical properties of Strenx® steel fulfil all the strict demands from customers and regulatory bodies. Strenx® 1100 E has been used in the XGC88000 crane from the beginning, and the tension bars are cut from plates at the SSAB Kunshan facility according to XCMG’s own design. Before the product was put into production, SSAB gave advice on material

selection and handled all the preproduction testing.

Strenx® 1100 E has a minimum yield strength of 1100 MPa. With such a strong steel, the tension bars can be made thinner, reducing the weight for easier handling and lower transportation costs. The consistent properties, guaranteed dimensional tolerances and high surface quality of Strenx® 1100 E make cutting and machining easier and more predictable. The stable workshop performance gives maximum yield and a cost-efficient production process. XCMG knows that all tension bars live up to the same high standards for strength and safety.

“XCMG is one of the leading companies in this industry,” says a spokesperson from the company’s technical department. “When we design and launch a new product such as the XGC88000 crawler crane, only the most reliable materials are used to ensure lifting equipment safety, stability and customer satisfaction. Strenx® performance steel is definitely

the perfect choice. It has all the qualities we expect from an SSAB product, and the support we get from SSAB is very valuable.”

Slurry wall construction in Naples

The company SAOS s.r.l. constructs slurry walls for infrastructure projects such as underground railways, road tunnels and high-speed railway lines throughout Italy.

The duty cycle crawler crane HS 8130.1 with the cutter LSC 8-18 from Liebherr has been working on the “Parco San Paolo” underground station in the Campanian capital

of Naples for over a year. A major benefit for the customer is the high flexibility of the carrier machine.

In just a short time the duty cycle crawler crane can be converted,

for example, to grab operation. Nenzing (Austria), 30 July 2024 − The company SAOS s.r.l. is carrying out the slurry wall work for the construction of the “Parco San Paolo” underground station in Naples.

“The slurry wall will be 1.2 metres thick and the bite length is 2.8 metres at a maximum depth of 52 metres. Altogether, 134 panels must be installed. We are using the HS 8130.1 with cutter LSC 8-18 and the HS 855 HD with hydraulic grab for this,” explains Antonio Mazzucco, Production Manager at SAOS s.r.l.

The slurry wall cutter from Liebherr is modularly designed meaning the customer can adapt the setup to suit the individual requirements and technical challenges.

On the jobsite in Naples, SAOS s.r.l. are using the standard version with a total height of 12 metres. The high weight with low centre of gravity provides for maximum verticality and excellent control. For construction sites with limited height, the modular cutting frame

can be shortened by 4 metres. A hydraulic turning device enables continuous alignment of the slurry wall cutter in the trench. This means all possible working positions are covered.

The cutting direction can be corrected using 12 independently controllable steering flaps.

The actual position of the flaps is displayed in real time on the monitor in the operator’s cabin.

Complete Package

The carrier machine for the slurry wall cutter is the duty cycle crawler crane HS 8130.1.

“This machine is ideally suited for use with slurry wall cutters as it is equipped with a powerful 570 kW Liebherr engine.

Nevertheless, it produces only low emissions and little noise. This is perfect for working in urban areas like here in Naples,” says Bertram Pfeifer, Application Specialist at Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH.

Liebherr offers the HS 8130.1 as carrier machine with slurry wall grab or cutter as well as the separation plant as a complete package. “Our application engineers can also support our customers with all technical challenges.”

Liebherr offers the “4C-Power” pay-per-use business model for the cutter wheel drives, whereby the customer only pays for the cutter wheel drives per working hour.

The advantage for the customer is that the costs are transparent and there are no surprises. The fee covers all costs of the cutter

wheel drives - overhaul, service and transport are included. Liebherr also has the possibility of monitoring the cutter wheel drives via modem.

The drive data makes it possible to react to any malfunctions at an early stage. By replacing the

POWER FACTORS, INFRARED SCANNING

drives in good time, the costs for an overhaul can be reduced and the operating time on the construction site increased.

Tower crane rental prelift planning best practices

The efficiency and safety of tower crane operations largely depends on the meticulous planning that precedes the actual work. Pre-lift planning is crucial in ensuring that tower crane activities are smooth, safe, and efficient.

This guide focuses on the best practices for pre-lift planning when renting a tower crane, drawing on industry standards and the expertise from Bigfoot Crane Company.

Understanding the importance of pre-lift planning

Pre-lift planning is not just a precaution; it’s a pivotal process that ensures all potential risks are

assessed and mitigated before a crane ever lifts a load. This stage of the project influences everything from crane selection and setup to successful execution and the safety of all personnel involved.

Project assessment and crane selection

Before a crane is selected, a thorough site inspection should be conducted. This includes evaluating the ground conditions, identifying any overhead hazards such as power lines, and assessing the site’s accessibility for crane delivery and setup. Based on the site assessment and the project’s requirements, select a crane that matches the lifting capacity needs, height requirements, and is suitable for the space constraints of the construction site. Bigfoot Crane Company often assists in this phase by providing expert consultations to

match their fleet to specific project demands.

Detailed lift planning

Develop a detailed lift plan that includes the weight of the load, the radius of the lift, rigging equipment, and the path of the lift. This plan should be reviewed and approved by a certified lift director or engineer. Utilize modern simulation tools to visualize and plan the lift in a virtual environment. This can help identify potential issues before they occur on the actual site.

Team coordination and communication

Clearly define and communicate the roles and responsibilities of all team members involved in the lifting operations, from the crane operator to the ground personnel and signal persons.

Hold a pre-lift meeting with all involved personnel to review the lift plan, discuss any concerns, and ensure everyone understands their roles and the safety procedures.

Safety protocols and compliance

Ensure that all lifting operations

comply with WorkSafe BC and BC Crane Safety regulations . This includes having the proper permits and ensuring that all crane operators are certified.

Verify that all safety equipment is in place and in good working order. This includes personal protective equipment for all workers, as well as crane safety features like load indicators.

Rigging and load management

Rigging equipment should be inspected prior to use to ensure it is not damaged or worn. This includes slings, chains, hooks, and other accessories.

Securely attach the load using the appropriate rigging techniques. Ensure that the load is balanced and that the rigging is configured to maintain control of the load at all times.

Environmental considerations

Keep a close eye on weather conditions leading up to and during the lift. High winds, rain, or lightning can pose significant risks during crane operations.

Utilizing wireless wind anemometers can provide realtime data directly to the crane operator or project management team, enhancing the ability to make informed decisions quickly in changing weather conditions. Learn more about wireless wind anemometers at shop.bigfootcrane. com. Plan the lift to minimize the environmental impact.

This includes avoiding disruption to local wildlife and adhering to any environmental regulations specific to the site.

Emergency preparedness

Have a clear, well-communicated emergency response plan in place. This should include procedures for dealing with equipment failures, medical emergencies, and other unforeseen incidents.

Specifically for crane operations, have a rescue plan in place for retrieving personnel from height in the event of an incident.

Steel company chooses BB Cranes

BB Cranes is to manufacture six overhead cranes for steel distributor D&E Group, for installation in new warehouses being built in Cape Town and George.

The additional warehouses will meet increasing demand by engineering firms, construction companies and general industry for D&E Group’s product ranges in mild steel, aluminium and stainless steel.

D&E’s warehouse cranes will be a mix of 8 and 5-tonners designed as single-girder electric overhead travelling machines. Condra will manufacture them to FEM class 2M standard, the classification for medium to heavy-duty service. The cranes will incorporate larger diameter wheels and miscellaneous other components on the hoists and end-carriages to ensure durability under conditions of intensive usage. Lifting heights will be around 6,5 metres. Girder spans will range between 12 and 20 metres.

Stephen Brink Jnr, senior sales executive at BB Cranes, explained that local manufacture helped win the D&E order.

“Because we manufacture in Cape Town, customers get a short lead time on a new crane. They also gain access to readily available spare parts for maximum crane uptime.

We deliver spares within 24 hours,” he said.

“If a crane is to be cost effective, downtime has to be minimised,” he expanded.

“But users who buy foreign cranes sometimes don’t take into consideration how much downtime will cost them if the crane is idle for long periods while spares are imported from abroad. Our spares are made locally, so delivery is almost immediate.”

Commenting on manufacturing capacity, Brink claimed that BB Cranes can deliver a new crane between eight and twelve weeks from date of order.

“Our competitors can rarely deliver in less than sixteen weeks,” said Brink. “So, because crane users often leave their lifting equipment orders until the last minute, having the shortest lead time gives us significant competitive advantage.”

Asked about expansion plans at BB Cranes, Brink announced that the company has recently added 400 square metres of factory floor space

to its Rivergate premises. “This extra space is allowing smoother production of an order book that continues to grow,” said Brink. “We have employed an additional fabricator, and we have ongoing training programmes in place for factory staff.”

BB Cranes was founded in 1992 to marry Cape Town-manufactured crane girders and electrification systems to technically complex hoists, crabs, end-carriages and other crane components supplied by Johannesburg-based Condra, saving customers the cost of transporting a complete crane between Gauteng and the Mother City.

BB Cranes became majority-owned by Condra in 2016, and wholly owned in 2022. The company is currently working towards ISO 9001:2015 certification to match that held by Condra.

LTM 1650-8.1

The 8-axle crane can complete hoisting work in the 700-tonne class or even higher with ease. It therefore has a nominal lifting capacity of 700 tonnes.

In a lifting capacity comparison, the LTM 1650-8.1 exceeds its predecessor’s capacity by between 15 and 50 percent, depending on its equipment package.

The ultimate guide to overhead crane operator training

You’re interested in getting started as an overhead crane operator but you’re not sure where to even begin.

What is an overhead crane?

An overhead crane is a machine, or piece of equipment, that allows you to lift and move heavy materials from one location to another in a precise manner.

There are three basic types of overhead cranes:

• Gantry Crane: A gantry crane is a type of overhead crane with a single or double girder configuration supported by freestanding legs that move on wheels or along a track or rail system.

• Jib Crane: Jib cranes are shaped like an upside-down L. They are stationed in one space via a support beam or attached to a building.

• Bridge Crane: Bridge cranes are mounted on either side of a building and form a “bridge” above the work floor.

How are overhead cranes typically used?

Overhead cranes are regularly utilized to move heavy loads in factories, warehouses, and other industrial settings.

They’re often precision configured and designed to fit a specific form of loading application. Think automobile manufacturers, ship building facilities, and storage yards where items are regularly loaded and unloaded from trucks, rail cars and barges.

Before, During, and After the Lift

When lifting and moving a load, there are three phases of the lift, each of which are addressed in the ASME

B30.2 Overhead and Gantry Cranes standard:

1. Before the lift

2. During the lift

3. After the lift

Before the Lift:

• Read and be familiar with the applicable provisions of crane equipment safety standards and the instructions listed in manual(s) provided with the equipment

• Be familiar with controls, instructions, and warnings located on the lifting equipment

• Not energize the main switch (crane disconnect) if a warning sign, lock, or tag is on the device until the sign, lock, or tag is removed by the person who placed it on the device or by a designated person

• Not remove a warning sign, lock, or tag that is on any switch that controls power to the crane, such as, but not limited to, the crane disconnect, motion disconnect, or runway disconnect, if the sign, lock, or tag was placed on the device by another person

• Place all controllers in the off position before closing the main line disconnect device

• Verify that no worker is on or adjacent to the crane before closing the main switch (crane disconnect)

• Not remove or obscure the warning or safety labels, plates, or tags furnished on the lifting equipment

• Be familiar with and understand hand signals

Additional Responsibilities

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, ASME B30.2 outlines the following tasks that crane operators shall do before executing an overhead lift:

• Verify that the hook, bridge, and trolley travel in the

same direction as shown on the controls

• Verify that the hoist rope is free from kinks or twists and is not wrapped around the load

• Verify that the load, sling, or lifting device (when not reeved into the hoist ropes) is seated in the bowl of the hook

• Verify that the hook latch (when provided) is closed and not supporting any part of the load

• Verify that the rope is seated in the drum grooves and in the sheave(s) grooves if there is or has been a slack rope condition

• Activate the warning device, when a device is furnished

During the Lift, ASME B30.2 states that crane operators shall:

• Respond to all signals from a lift director or designated signalperson.

• Verify the weight of the load without using a loadlimiting device

• Make the lift only if the load is within the working load limit of the crane, hoist, and the components used in rigging.

• Minimize swinging of the load, and avoid sudden acceleration and deceleration of the load.

• Verify that the load and rigging are free to move and will clear all obstructions

After the lift, ASME B30.2 states that crane operators shall:

• Lift the load block and attachments above the highest movable obstruction under the crane when the crane is not in use

• Properly secure an outdoor overhead or gantry crane when the crane is shut down

• Open the crane main line disconnect device and the magnet disconnect switch (when applicable) before leaving the crane cab

• Place the controllers in the off position before leaving the controls of the crane

• Shut off the power to pendant-operated cranes before leaving area

Believe it or not, this above list is not comprehensive, hence the need training.

Hoist certification

The issue of the validity and wording of the different types of certificates that are issued for hand powered lifting devices, which include chain blocks and lever hoists and commonly referred to as “hoists” often arise in the work place when audits or inspections are conducted.

These certificates are commonly issued by persons or entities that supply, inspect and /or test this equipment.

Sadly, many of these certificates are badly, or incorrectly worded and if required as evidence in a court of law, would be declared invalid. Before we take a look at the wording and contents of

these certificates, we need to establish what the different types of certificates are, as well their purpose and legal compliance. Users must comply to the law and the hoists that they purchase and use, must conform to a specific quality standard.

For the purpose of this article, we will use the word hoist to include

chain blocks and lever hoists as defined in SANS 500 and included in DMR 18 as hand powered lifting devices.

Hoist Certificate types can be broadly categorized into the following:

Certificate of Inspection.

This specifies, and details the results of a visual, external inspection, conducted by a trained and appointed inspector. This competent person, such as a LTI or LMI needs to be appointed, in writing, by the user. The inspection should be conducted in accordance with a proper detailed check list fully completed.

Certificate of Test

This certifies, and details the results of an actual performance test, which is commonly referred to as a proof load, or test load, that was conducted on a specific type of hoist. This certificate must be issued by the OEM, Supplier or entity, such as a LME, that tested the machine, either after manufacturing,

assembling or during the actual service life of the machine, as specified in DMR 18 and SANS 500:2023.

Certificate of Conformance (not compliance)

This certifies that the hoist was manufactured in accordance with a specific SANS or other International Standard, such as EN, DIN, JIS, BS or US Fed Spec. The number of the Standard referenced, must appear on the Certificate.

Certificate of Test and Conformance

This certifies that the hoist was manufactured, and conforms to a specific International quality Standard and is then tested, by the OEM, Supplier or LME to a specific proof load, or test load, specified in the Standard, on a calibrated test rig.

Validity of certificates

For the record, all hoists that are sold and distributed in the RSA are imported, mainly from Eastern Countries. These units are either completely chained up by the manufacturer overseas, and supplied to the user in sealed cartons, or the units are imported partly assembled and un chained. These hoists are then assembled locally and the hand and load chains are fitted. The units then have to be tested before dispatch to a user. This is to comply with DMR 18 (5), and should be conducted by registered LME/LMIs and a proper certificate of test must be issued.

The issue of the validity of mostly small sized printed certificates, often in a foreign language, that comes with a chain block or lever hoist in a sealed carton and then dispatched directly to the user, raises a serious legal issue in terms of the OHS Act. If we scrutinize DMR 18 (5) it requires testing by a LME/LMI “before they are put into use…….” Therefore, if these chained up units, in sealed boxes, are dispatched without being individually tested, they do not comply to the law, and are supplied illegally. A proper printed certificate of test, signed by a LMI on behalf of a LME, should be issued and supplied with the unit,

to the user. This is referred to as the “birth certificate” and it should be filed by the user, and be available for audits and inspections.

CE Mark relevance. It is necessary to note that if a hoist has a CE mark, which is normally stamped or marked on the identification plate, or printed in the hoists accompanying manual, the hoist has to be issued with a EU Declaration of Conformity. This document, referred to as a DOC, confirms and states that the hoist conforms with relevant EU Safety Standards. These documents are published as EC Machinery Directives, such as EC Directive 2006/42/EC which covers machinery, including hoists, for acceptance in EU countries. It is common in our country that many hoists that are distributed and marked CE, do not have operating manuals or are issued with a relevant DOC.

In conclusion, it is important to note that the onus is on the user to comply to the law and only use quality, certified and tested hoists. Unfortunately, there are importers and distributors who are not concerned about the quality of hoists that they supply, but only

in profits generated by volume of sales. If the user is not concerned about using proper good quality hoists, normally because of being more expensive to purchase, he or she must be aware that they are the responsible party that will face prosecution, should a failure result in damage to plant or equipment, or resulting injury.

Lastly, all certificates, such as inspection, test or conformance certificates must be filed and kept on record by the user and be available for scrutiny, for audit purposes or should any incidents occur.

At the end of the day, there is no substitute for safety and users must only purchase and use quality, branded, tested and properly certified hoists.

The contents of this article is the opinion of the writer only. It is supplied without prejudice or bias untoward any party or persons and may not be used as factual whatsoever, should a dispute arise or in a court of law.

Single fall and double fall chain blocks a comparative analysis

Chain blocks, also known as chain hoists, are essential tools in various industries, providing a reliable and efficient means of lifting and moving heavy loads. This article will delve into the differences, benefits, and safety ratings of two types of chain blocks: single fall and double fall.

Single Fall Chain Blocks

Single fall chain blocks lift the load on a single fall of load chain. They are typically used for lower capacity blocks, such as 500kg or 1T.

Benefits

Single fall chain blocks are lightweight and compact, making them highly portable and versatile. They are easy to install even in restricted environments. These chain blocks are also cost-effective and easily maintained and repaired. They do not require any power source other than human effort, making them ideal for situations where access to electricity or hydraulic power is limited6.

Safety Rating

Single fall chain blocks are designed with safety in mind. They often feature a double pawl brake system, forged safety latch, and forged and heat-treated load hooks with batch traceability and stretch indicators. They meet and exceed all the requirements within BS EN 13157:

2004+A1:2009, ANSI/ASME B30.16, AS1418.2, and SANS 15942.

Double Fall Chain Blocks

Double fall chain blocks operate multiple fall chains to reduce the effort needed to lift the load. They are typically used for higher capacity blocks.

Benefits

Double fall chain blocks have an improved hand chain guide that prevents canting or jamming of the hand chain, leading to a smooth running of the chain.

High-quality bearings on side plates, gearbox, and load chain sheave ensure smooth operation of load chain and drive pinion. The doublechain design distributes the load evenly, reducing the risk of chain failure and ensuring a secure lifting process.

Safety Rating

Double fall chain blocks are designed with enhanced safety features. The product incorporates

a double chain system with 8 mm chains, which enhances its safety and reliability during lifting operations. They are also manufactured in compliance with the EU’s explosion-proof standard ATEX94/9/EC and Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC9.

Conclusion

Both single fall and double fall chain blocks have their unique advantages and safety features. The choice between the two largely depends on the specific requirements of the lifting task, including the weight of the load and the available resources. Regardless of the type, it’s crucial to use these tools correctly and safely to ensure efficient and accident-free operations. Always remember to check the Safe Working Load (SWL) or Working Load Limit (WWL) before using any chain block

PHL Hydraulics UK Ltd has successfully completed its first Enerpac SCJ-100 cube jack project involving the installation of 12 pre-cast concrete bridge decks each weighting 110 T on a estuary crossing The decks were transported to the pier locations along a fabricated causeway on SPMTs. At each location, the cube jacks, with temporary frame supporting the bridge deck, were stroked to +1.8m, and driven in between piers and lowered onto pre-set bearings.

Anthony Redmond again, “We’re now being asked to handle larger civils projects and so opted for the Enerpac 100 ton cube jack to give us the lifting capability and speed of deployment we’ll need. As our first cube jack project showed, we made the right choice! Our team did a

great job on their first lifting project with the SCJ-100 cube jacks.”

Enerpac SCJ-Series 100

The SCJ-100 Cube Jack is a compact and portable hydraulic solution for synchronised incremental lifting and lowering of heavy loads up to 400 tons. It uses a base lifting frame and self-aligning, lightweight steel cribbing blocks to provide highcapacity and stable lifting up to 3m. The SCJ-100 Cube Jack comes with a storage frame to make tool maintenance and inventory management easier.

Steel cribbing blocks have several benefits over wood cribbing, including fewer cribbing components to handle and align, lifting up to 8 times faster, and lifting higher than using traditional cribbing methods. Cube Jacks operate with up to 700 bar hydraulic pressure and are compatible with standard pumps, such as the Enerpac Split-Flow Pump that offers the ability to evenly operate multiple Cube Jacks.

Modulift spreader beams lift new intercity express “bullet train”

Japan-based lifting gear supplier, Nakamura Industry Co. Ltd. and their customer have successfully lifted an EMU3000 train using Modulift spreader beams.

Below-the-hook, Nakamura’s customer employed two MOD® 34 spreader beams at a span of 3.5m, providing four lifting points underneath the train to evenly distribute the weight.

The two spreader beams were attached to drop links and shackles at the end of each beam, with synthetic round slings below the beams, and wire rope slings above. This allowed the train to be safely lifted onto the vessel ready for transportation from Japan. The spreader beams were disassembled, and the same configuration used to unload the train at its destination in Taiwan, where it will serve the East Coast line. Deliveries of the EMU3000

trains have been ongoing since 2021 by Hitachi Group, with the remainder of the trains due to be delivered and installed this year.

A total of 50 12-car trains (total 600 cars) have been built for TRA (Taiwan Railways Administration), replacing 30-year-old 8-car trains. The whole project will increase passenger capacity and enable passengers to travel around the island of Taiwan in 6 hours.

Osaka-based business Nakamura Industry Co. Ltd. is a distributor of Modulift spreader beams and holds stock from 6t to 100t for fast delivery throughout Japan. They also supply a variety of products from wire rope and synthetic slings to hooks and shackles. Sumihide

Haruta, Executive Officer and General Manager, Sales Division at Nakamura Industry Co., Ltd. commented “The Modulift spreader beams’ adaptable design allowed our customer to safely configure the lift for the EMU3000. These beams were transported with the train, facilitating easy disassembly, shipping, and reassembly before offloading.” Sarah Spivey, Managing Director of Modulift said “Modulift spreader beams are portable, lightweight, and easy to transport and store. They proved to be the ideal lifting solution for safely transporting the train from Japan to Taiwan. Top 10 hydraulic system safety precautions

Hydraulic system precautions include operating the system only for its intended purposes.

It’s essential to avoid using the

hydraulic system for

tasks it wasn’t designed for, as this can lead to excessive pressure, stress on the hydraulic components, and potential system failure.

Following manufacturer guidelines and using the hydraulic system within its specified limits ensures the safe and efficient operation of the system. It also helps prevent damage to the hydraulic lines and other components.

Inspect Hydraulic Systems Before Use

Before operating a hydraulic system, inspect it thoroughly for low hydraulic oil fluid levels, signs of leaks, loose fittings, cracked hoses, or any other issues.

Addressing potential problems ahead of time can prevent system failures or accidents caused by malfunctioning hydraulics during operation.

Repair Leaks Before Operating

If you discover an escaping oil or hydraulic fluid leak anywhere in the hydraulic system, this is your sign to not operate the system.

Leaking hydraulic fluid is a hazard and can lead to pump failure or other damage.

Before use, ensure any leaks are thoroughly repaired to prevent unsafe drops in fluid levels or system malfunctions. You’ll need to address the source of the leak to stop additional hydraulic oil from escaping.

Shut Down Malfunctioning Hydraulic System

Hydraulic systems operate under tremendous pressure. If the hydraulic system overheats, loses pressure, or suddenly stops working during operation, shut it down immediately.

Continuing to use a faulty highpressure hydraulic system can lead to dangerous malfunctions, highpressure sprays, or system failures.

Remember that your safety relies on properly maintaining hydraulic equipment and immediately addressing any issues that arise.

Use Proper PPE with Hydraulics

It sounds simple, but when handling hydraulic systems, wearing the proper personal protective

equipment (PPE) is essential for ensuring safety.

PPE such as safety glasses, gloves, and protective clothing shields against potential hazards such as high-pressure fluid leaks, flying debris, or accidental contact with moving parts.

By wearing the appropriate PPE, you can minimize the risk of injuries and protect yourself from the potential dangers associated with hydraulic systems. Adhere to safety protocols and regulations to create a safer working environment with hydraulic systems.

Keep Body Parts Away from Moving Hydraulics

When working with hydraulic systems, never put your hands, face, arms, or any other body parts into or near moving components.

The pumps, motors, cylinders, control valves, and other parts present crushing and cutting hazards. Maintain a safe distance from all moving hydraulic parts,

even when the system is shut down. Following hydraulic safety protocols protects operators from severe injury caused by powerful moving mechanisms.

Use Proper LOTO with Hydraulic System Maintenance

Proper lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedures are also important when performing maintenance or repairs on hydraulic systems. LOTO involves isolating energy sources, such as hydraulic pumps, motors, and cylinders, to prevent accidental start-up or release of stored energ

To implement LOTO correctly, follow these steps:

• Identify all energy sources;

• Isolate and lock out each source;

• Release residual pressure;

• Verify the system is de-energized;

• Attach lockout/tagout devices to ensure the system remains isolated.

Following these procedures can keep personnel safe working on hydraulic systems.

Get Proper Hydraulic System Training

Hydraulic system operators must verify that they have received proper training on how to use the system correctly.

To prevent accidents and prioritize safety, understanding the functions, controls, and potential risks associated with hydraulic systems is crucial.

Proper training gives operators the

the overall safety and efficiency of hydraulic system operations

Maintain Hydraulic System Regularly

Ensuring the safety of hydraulic systems entails regular maintenance and upkeep.

By conducting routine inspections, identifying and rectifying potential issues, and adhering to proper maintenance protocols, you can mitigate risks and uphold the reliable operation of your hydraulic system. Don’t overlook the importance of maintaining your hydraulic system for optimal performance.

Prioritize Emergency Response Preparedness

Last but not least, in hydraulic system safety, always prioritize emergency response preparedness.

This involves having a well-defined emergency response plan in place, which outlines the importance of prompt and effective actions in case of emergencies.

Here are some key steps for responding to hydraulic system emergencies:

• Identify potential risks and hazards;

• Establish clear communication and notification procedures;

• Train employees on emergency response protocols;

• Have designated roles and responsibilities; emergency response preparedness

Understanding hydraulic cylinders

Whether you are simply wondering “what is a hydraulic cylinder?” or looking to learn about hydraulic cylinder parts and how they work, or possibly are considering hydraulic cylinder repair or a hydraulic cylinder rebuild, understanding the basics of these cylinders is essential.

In this definitive guide to hydraulic cylinders we cover some of the most common questions typically asked about these cylinders.

A hydraulic cylinder or a hydraulic actuator, is a mechanical device that generates force through linear motion.

It achieves this by using pressurized hydraulic fluid, typically oil. The basic setup includes a cylinder barrel containing a piston attached

to a piston rod. This setup allows the cylinder to exert force in one direction, making it an essential component in a myriad of machines, from construction equipment to manufacturing machinery.

Hydraulic cylinder components

Hydraulic cylinder manufacturers can build cylinders in all sizes. From micro-hydraulic cylinders weighing a few ounces to massive industrial

cylinders used with excavating shovels, hydraulic actuators generally contain the same basic components:

Piston: The piston rod extends through the head of the cylinder and utilizes the forces of the hydraulic fluid to retract or extend.

Seals are placed around the piston to maintain the correct pressure in the barrel.

Cylinder barrel: The barrel is constructed of a seamless steel tube that houses the cylinder. The barrel’s solid structure holds the pressure and prevents leaking.

Cylinder head: The head is the part of the cylinder where the piston retracts and extends. When the piston extends, the other end of the barrel is closed off to maintain pressure. The head contains the bearings and seals that align the piston and keep the cylinder sealed.

Cylinder base: The barrel is enclosed at the cylinder base and sealed tight to prevent fluid leaks.

The equipment that uses the cylinder is mounted at the base.

Gaskets, seals and other components: The seals and gaskets in a hydraulic actuator are dynamic components that must withstand extreme pressures and temperatures without failing. The seals are made from different materials, including Teflon, polyurethane, fluorocarbon, metal and nitrile rubber. Some materials like rubber are suited for lowtemperature operation, but for high-temperature jobs, the seals are fluorocarbon.

Hydraulic cylinder advantages

The horsepower-to-weight ratio of a hydraulic cylinder is superior to that of a pneumatic cylinder, with hydraulics gaining one or two horsepower per pound. When it comes to power, a hydraulic cylinder can create a mechanical force that is 25 times more powerful than a pneumatic cylinder with the exact dimensions. Unlike pneumatic cylinders that max

out at 250 psi, a top-of-the-line hydraulic pump can produce 4000 psi. Since the hydraulic fluid is incompressible, hydraulic cylinders do not need additional fluid added to maintain constant force and torque. Even if the hydraulic pump and motor are located a significant distance from the operation, they can function efficiently without a noticeable loss of power.

Types of hydraulic cylinders

There are many types of hydraulic cylinders for sale, with these being the four most common:

Single-acting cylinders

Single acting hydraulic cylinders produce power when hydraulic fluid enters a single port and flows into the cylinder and causes the cylinder to retract. Also called push cylinders, they feature a singleacting piston that moves in one direction and requires a motor or spring to reset its position.

Double-acting cylinders

In double acting hydraulic cylinder

models, fluid moves into one port and exits through a second port, forcing the cylinder to retract and extend. With two pressurized chambers, double-acting pistons do not require a spring or motor to operate.

Telescopic cylinders

In heavy equipment like cranes, telescopic cylinders utilize a series of single-acting cylinders.

When one cylinder retracts, it transfers force to the next cylinder.

Tandem cylinders

With two separate barrels connected by the piston rods, the tandem cylinder design achieves a significant degree of force in a small area.

Tandem cylinders can be combined in stages to provide more power.

A magnetic attraction to safety

Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) is a great example of how technology can play a vital role in improving lifting safety, says Keith Tonge, Technical Officer at the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA).

Regular inspection of a crane’s structure, its sheaves, the hook and block mechanisms are just some of the areas of focus for maintenance programmes. Wire ropes should also be a key part, yet too often this element is overlooked. Neglecting proper maintenance and inspection of the crane rope means the risk of

missing internal degradation may lead to rope failure with potentially catastrophic results.

Many operations still rely only on visual inspection of wire ropes. However, plant engineers should consider the crucial role Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) can play in maintenance – particularly on safety critical crane installations that are being used intensively throughout their working life.

MRT gives a view into the heart of a wire rope used on cranes in order to detect any deterioration that might have occurred in service.

It gives plant engineers the ability to predict the life expectancy of the rope, allowing them to plan replacement in a just-in-time manner, without the need for bulky wire rope hogging storeroom space.

The technology involves passing the rope through a permanent magnet. This sets up an electromotive force, which is picked up with electronic sensors that can detect any breaks in the rope or any corrosion that occurs throughout the section of the rope, which is known as Loss of Metallic Area (LMA). There are different MRT equipment

manufacturers but the method is exactly the same with each one, giving clear visibility of any broken wires, voids and corrosion.

To examine the core of the rope without MRT, is a time consuming process. On multi-strand crane ropes, you can never see the core because the multiple layers can’t be opened up due to the underlying layers being laid in the opposite direction to the outer strands. A rope may outwardly look perfectly OK, but if its core is utterly degraded through fatigue failure, it can drop a load. This failure can, however, be detected quickly using MRT, preventing the risk of accident.

Early MRT machines were cumbersome with the recorder and oscilloscope almost filling an entire room, which didn’t make using MRT easy for maintenance of wire ropes installed on cranes. However, advances in technology have made the technology eminently portable – it can even become a fixture of the crane itself in some cases, allowing the rope to be constantly monitored as it is used. An MRT unit today can send a signal directly to a manager’s computer screen to

give a visual representation of how the wire rope is deteriorating over time.

The technology has been incorporated into ISO 4309 Cranes – Wire ropes – Care and maintenance, inspection and discard as a method of examination of in-service cranes ropes, but only as a supplement to visual examination.

MRT is, however, a vital tool for safety and maintenance systems and has become crucial for routine monitoring of ropes particularly in applications where minimising costly downtime is particularly critical – such as offshore.

Many safety critical cranes will use MRT to produce a ‘baseline’ as a ‘birth certificate’ for a length of wire rope.

So when it enters service, the engineer knows precisely what that rope is like at the outset and can then accurately monitor any deterioration throughout its service life.

When the rope gets to the point of rejection criteria, managers can plan in the change without fear of rope failure, maximising uptime in busy operations.

When it comes to the provision of lifting equipment maintenance and repair services it is always prudent

to seek out the ‘gold standard’. In addition to offering expertise on MRT and condition monitoring of wire ropes, LEEA members are structured to provide specialised repair and maintenance as well as the inspection function, as separate parts of a one stop shop,

Horizontal safety line

Does your workforce use temporary horizontal anchor lines? Are you certain these webbing lines are installed, tensioned, and locked correctly, without the guesswork? Designed to enable clearance heights to be calculated correctly?

Are the components strong, robust and fit for purpose in the event of a fall? Are you sure?

Unlike anything else on the market the HSL2 is the first temporary horizontal webbing anchor line to

allow the installer to be certain of the tension of the line and be confident the ratchet is loaded with the correct amount of webbing and locked securely.

For over 20 years, SpanSet have

led the way with our iconic HSL ‘Red SpanSet’, often copied, never equalled!

Drawing from our Height Safety, Lifting and Load Control manufacturing expertise, we have combined innovative design with quality components to produce our best horizontal webbing anchor line yet.

The HSL2 allows your workforce to focus on the job in hand, confident their safety line is correctly set up, strong and will protect them when working near exposed edges.

HSL2 - Temporary Horizontal Safety Line

A pre-assembled webbing anchor line for the attachment of fall arrest or work restraint equipment.

Protecting workers when accessing unprotected edges in a wide variety of industries from construction (eg. slab edge installation), nuclear, warehousing to marine.

Quality SpanSet Ratchet

With patented “Tension Force Indicator” technology guarantees safe installation every time.

Ratchet also incorporates a unique ‘fill line’ indicator - confirming to the installer when the ratchet is loaded with the correct number of turns of webbing to lock it securely when under tension. Improved ratchet mechanism allows finer adjustment - making it easier to achieve the correct tension in the line!

Anchor Hooks

Fitted with safety swivel anchor hooks - the swivel takes the twist out of the webbing during installation. The hooks always remain closed and secure under load.

Tested under cyclic loading conditions - to ensure they are suitable for windy conditions. Wind can cause high frequency vibration in the line, this could cause a traditional karabiner to fail. Our safety swivel hooks will not fail in windy conditions.

Connection Rings

Two in-line connection rings are fitted to the line. These ensure all lanyard karabiners and hooks are

compatible. The rings slide freely along the line, allowing the worker to move easily and reducing wear and tear – no ill-fitting karabiners catching on the webbing.

Integrated transport/storage bagSpecifically designed to ensure set up of the line is intuitive, transport around site is straightforward and any spare adjustment webbing can be packed away in the bag reducing wear and tear.

Tension Force Indicator (TFI)

No guesswork!

When using a temporary horizontal anchor line, it is essential workers know how much the web would deflect in the event of a fall.

This is critical for fall arrest applications where too much deflection of the line could mean there might not be enough clearance height.

The tension in the line must therefore not be left to chance. Our patented Tension Torce Indicator (TFI) allows the worker to confirm the tension is applied by the ratchet

to the line is correct - every time!

Instruction manual provides compehensive clearance height data taking into account bot the length of the web between anchor points and the height of the line above the worker.

HSL2 Horizontal Safety Line

Designed and manufactured in the UK by SpanSet - inventors of the original Horizontal webbing anchor line, often copied, never beaten and yet remains competitively priced!

Although some customers can be intimidated by the amount of data, DEVELON and its distributors are working hard to develop training programs that help educate customers on how to navigate the system. This starts with DEVELON distributors using brief, streamlined training materials, which are very effective with sales specialists.

The MY DEVELON Team adds that when a customer purchases a new machine, the Develon distributorship sales specialists provide some basic training about telematics with the customer. So when the customer leaves with the new machine, they have a telematics profile. The customer can log in and start tracking the new machine immediately.

One of the most popular features of telematics services today, according to Develon, is the ability to receive codes from machines. Distributors and customers can subscribe to receive notifications when a DEVELON machine requires

service. This allows distributors to proactively engage with customers and their machines, thereby optimizing uptime protection.

The telematics offering helps keep customers’ machines working the way they were intended, the MY DEVELON Team adds. Distributors and customers can better remotely monitor machines to ensure they are in good health and can schedule routine maintenance to ensure it is done when it is needed.

The MY DEVELON application (app) is available for download from popular application service providers. Current users of the DEVELON Fleet Management system should replace the current app by downloading the new MY DEVELON app. They can log in with their same credentials.

Hot Dip Galvanizing Solutions to corrosive challenges stand the

test of time and safely extend life-of-mine

The Hot Dip Galvanizers Association of South Africa (HDGASA) spends a significant amount of time liaising with the mining sector where the tough environment - characterised by acidic fissure waters, humidity, fumes and gases, as well as dust and abrasion - takes its toll on pivotal steel infrastructure.

HDGASA Executive Director Robin Clarke advises that, although hot dip galvanizing is primarily favoured for economic reasons, the collateral outcome is improved mine safety:

“The design criteria are largely economical: how long will a mine last and be safely serviceable? The

key elements are cost to build, cost to operate and cost to maintain. Hot dip galvanizing is competitive across all these criteria,” Clarke points out.

The mining sector faces many challenges, including economic turbulence, fluctuating commodity

prices, the entrance of new investors and skills scarcity. “We can never assume that knowledge and experience are embedded. Much of what we do is informative and educational,” Clarke says.

Lessons from the past

While it has now really taken hold in the sector, hot dip galvanizing only began to gain traction within South Africa’s deep-level mining sector comparatively recently.

During the 1990s, Clarke’s HDGASA predecessors set out to demonstrate that this was the best corrosion control mechanism for mining.

A forward-thinking engineer at a large mining house collaborated with the HDGASA and the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) to scientifically investigate the impact of hot dip galvanizing over a 10 period.

Up until then, a tendency to overdesign steel sections to compensate for probable levels of corrosion prevailed.

“During 1995 and 1996, various

tests and simulations were performed to establish probable real- world performance outcomes for hot dip galvanized steel in deeplevel mining applications. The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) performed tests with both natural and service mine water, extracted from shafts in service.

Outperforming expectations and safely operating beyond LOM

The testing process occurred over a 500-day period. Steel test pieces, with a hot dip galvanized coating averaging 200µm thickness were used.

The loss of zinc on the test pieces exposed to natural water equated to 4µm/per annum, which equated to a probable coating life of 50 years. The test pieces subjected to typical mine service water suffered a loss in the order of 8µm per annum, which translates into a probable service life of 25 years, easily meeting the 25 year life-ofmine (LOM) estimate which the design engineer was briefed to achieved,” he explains.

In January 2003 and 2006, further tests verified these original predictions.

Corrosion levels remained low, with only some isolated spots (where the galvanized coating had been mechanically damaged during installation) showing marginal deterioration.

“On these spots, no corrosion creep was evident and a portion of the zinc-iron alloy - still at about 24 µm - provided corrosion protection. The bottom line was, that 10 years after being applied, the corrosion control of zinc had outperformed

expectations - except for a very particular application, where the vertically-oriented steel buntons had eroded, after being subjected to direct impingement of water droplets, dust and debris at high velocity.”

Mining engineers undertook either to minimise this falling material, or redesign shields over the buntons.

The HDGASA has subsequently published papers addressing corrosion challenges in deep-level mining, particularly in instances where corrosion cells develop due to the accumulation of debris at catch points in crevices, and surfaces of various hollow section components.

However, even these illustrated the positive impact of utilising a corrosion control hot dip galvanized coating.

Clarke says lower levels of corrosion mean that many mines are now safely operating beyond their originally envisaged LOM.

At feasibility level, design engineers are even considering designing for durability beyond the original LOM specification - which is even more reason to hot dip galvanise.

“It is very gratifying that hot dip galvanizing has now gained traction to the extent that it has, with virtually all steel work either being galvanized or considered for galvanizing,” he says.

‘Hot’ solutions to corrosive challenges

The HDGASA’s role in the mining sector did not stop there: the Association recently addressed challenges in coal washing, due

to the presence of high levels of extremely corrosive sulphur. The solution extended beyond merely galvanizing, with the HDGASA proposing a combination of galvanizing and paint, known as a duplex system.

“Pioneering work was done in response to engineering requests for solutions to extremely corrosive challenges.

We therefore compiled operating procedures for preparation and painting, and we also collaborated with paint manufacturers.”

“After 10 years, the duplex system which we recommended remains in exceptional condition - and is expected to provide another 15 years’ service life,” he advises.

“The HDGASA will continue to play an important role in mining, supporting what is now widely accepted in the sector as an embedded corrosion protection technology backed by sound science, and with a proven ability to extend life-of-mine and improve return-on-investment,” Clarke concludes.

Hot Dip Galvanizing (HDG) is a process used to protect steel and iron from corrosion by coating them with a layer of zinc.

This technique involves immersing the metal in a bath of molten zinc, which forms a durable and corrosion-resistant coating.

In the lifting industry, which includes equipment and components such as cranes, hoists, and lifting slings, Hot Dip Galvanizing can be highly beneficial for several reasons.

Benefits of Hot Dip Galvanizing in the Lifting Industry

Corrosion Resistance: HDG provides effective and proven corrosion control, which is crucial for lifting equipment exposed to environments, including exterior atmospheric and marine conditions.

Durability: The zinc coating applied through HDG is a diffusion coating which is metallurgically bonded to the steel, offering proven ongoing protection that can extend the life of lifting equipment.

Maintenance Reduction: Galvanized coatings require less frequent maintenance compared to steel coated with purely barriertype coatings. HDG coatings reduce long-term maintenance costs and downtime through their ability to provide both barrier and cathodic protection to steel.

Cost-Effectiveness: At times it may arise that the initial cost of galvanizing may require a higher initial investment, the extended service life and reduced maintenance make it the best lifetime costed choice. Over the service life of the article.

Enhanced Safety: Corrosion can compromise the structural integrity of lifting equipment. By controlling corrosion, HDG maintains the strength and reliability of the equipment, thereby contributing to safer operations.

Environmental Resistance: HDG can withstand various environmental factors, including exposure to

atmospheric conditions as well as soil and water environments making it suitable for a wide range of lifting applications.

Applications of Hot Dip Galvanizing in the Lifting Industry

Crane Components: Galvanizing crane parts such as beams, columns, and other structural elements to ensure they withstand the elements and to maintain the design strength of the components over and extended service life.

Hoists and Winches: Protecting hoist and winch components from corrosion, especially when used in outdoor or harsh lowers maintenance costs and allows for greater availability over the service life of the articles.

Lifting Slings - Wire rope lifting slings are typically manufactured from galvanized wire strands

Support Structures: Galvanizing support structures, such as towers and poles, that are integral to lifting systems.

Safety Barriers and Rails: Coating safety barriers and railings used in conjunction with lifting equipment to ensure their longevity and effectiveness.

Considerations for Using Hot Dip Galvanizing

Preparation of articles: Proper surface preparation is essential for effective galvanizing. The metal must be clean and free of contaminants before coating. Comprehensive standards are

available to guide the fabricator and manufacturer as well as the designer in components and materials to be hot dip galvanized such as ISO 14713 parts 1 and 2.

Size and Shape Limitations:

Potential limitations regarding the size and shape of components to be immersed in the galvanizing bath are best dealt with at the design phase in conjunction with the galvanizer.

Heat Sensitivity: Hot Dip

Galvanizing occurs at a temperature of around 450oC Iron and Steel will is not be affected by this temperature range as the transformation of the metal and thus changes to its properties will only occur at temperatures above 700oC However, careful consideration is required for materials that may be subject to stresses which may be relieved at the galvanizing temperature end may result in potential to distort or warp the material unless dealt with in an appropriate manner. affected by the galvanizing process.

Aesthetic Considerations: The finish of hot-dip galvanized steel may not always be as smooth or uniform as other coatings, which may be a consideration for applications where appearance is important. However, the limits of the aesthetics may be enhanced by a system known as Duplex coating for aesthetic and/or legal reasons, such as orange and white stripping of high tower equipment to conform to aviation regulations. Aesthetics for architectural, identifying coloured or camouflage appearances and extended service life may also employ Duplex systems.

Overall, Hot Dip Galvanizing is historically and industrially widely used as the most effective method for protecting steel components, in the lifting industry, ensuring their durability, safety, and performance in challenging environments.

Branching out with Combilift

The Combi-CLL (Container LogLoader) was recently exhibited at EXPO Richmond 2024, one of America’s leading trade shows for the forest products industry.

The concept and operation of the Combi-CLL is based on that of the Combi-CSS (Container Slip Sheet), which has been successfully deployed across numerous industries for the mechanised loading of long products such as packs of timber or steel into containers. This not only reduces the risk of accidents to the workforce and product damage but is incredibly fast compared to

other methods – a 40’ container can be fully loaded by one operator in under 6 minutes.

The 30t capacity electrohydraulically powered Combi-CLL offers the same benefits when it comes to speed, safety and product integrity. It was designed to address the requirements of exporters of softwood and hardwood logs, the nature and shape of which make them much trickier to handle than palletised or packed products. Logs can be individually lifted and preloaded into a robust, high-sided metal “tub” before the patented push-pull mechanism powers the

tub into the container. Once inside, the hydraulic dropdown hatch is closed and locked into position to hold the logs securely in place, and the tub is retracted to allow the logs to settle within the container.

Once again, Combilift has come up with a customer-led solution that also has potential for applications beyond the forestry and timber industries.

Vanguard overcome extreme weather conditions to relocate the SAS Assegaai

Vanguard were required to battle extreme weather conditions to successfully complete the relocation of a 650t ex South African Navy submarine.

The SAS Assegaai, which was decommissioned in 2003, was required to be transported 1.5km from the Navy Dockyard to the new Naval Heritage Site in Simons Town.

Measuring 58m in length and 6m in width, the Vanguard team engineered a solution using 34 axle lines to lift, transport and position the submarine. With 2 x 9 axles in

the forward position and 2 x 8 axle lines at the aft, the operational team were able to negotiate the route with extreme precision. Utilising the trailers to lift the cargo from the dockyard’s synchro lift, relocate the vessel, position it over the premade plinths and lower it into its final position. “This project was extremely interesting for the Vanguard team, not only for the engineering challenge that was presented, but also due to the history and heritage of the cargo being transported”, commented Andy Seleke, Field Manager at Vanguard.

“Due to the nature of our work, we always build contingencies into every project we undertake, but the weather conditions are not something that we can control. The extreme weather conditions that we faced during the move created additional complexities, however the experience and diligence of the whole Vanguard team was evident and enabled the vessel to be delivered safely.”
