The RIGGING ACADEMY OF SOUTH AFRICA reaches new heights Having identified an urgent requirement for trained and qualified rigging personnel in the areas of mechanical materials handling and related fields, Machine Moving and Engineering (MME) established the Rigging Academy of South Africa (Pty) Ltd (RASA) in 2007 at their Durban premises. The MerSETA accreditation as a training centre was obtained in 2008. It was and still is essential that the skills the learners acquired at RASA are of the highest standards. The immediate demand and popularity of the Rigging Academy qualifications, led to the opening of a satellite RASA training centre at the MME premises in Johannesburg. Ongoing drives to build accreditation for the Rigging Academy led to the opening of our first Rigging Decentralised Trade Test Centre outside Indlela (Olifantsfontein) in 2010, which is under MerSETA accreditation. A highlight in the growth of the Rigging Academy as a training centre of choice came in 2013, with the QCTO/NAMB accreditation being acquired as a Preferred

Rigger Trade Test Centre and Skills Development Provider. RASA is one of the best-equipped training facilities in South Africa, as all the equipment and technology within the Machine Moving and Engineering Group is available to the academy. Anyone that is eager to gain a formal qualification in the field of rigging and upskill themselves towards a solid career future, is welcome to enroll in any of the courses RASA has to offer. All the learnings and techniques gained in field at MME, are transferred and applied to the Rigging Academy, placing it at the cutting edge of rigger training and skills development. To date, 320 Accelerated Artisan Training Programme (AATP)
apprentices have been trained and qualified at RASA. 98 apprentices have written their trade test and 88 Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) apprentices have been trade tested. A total of 1750 short courses have been delivered. Our overall pass rate at RASA sits at 94.5%.
Skills that are in demand Rigging is recognized as a critical scarce skill, and a trade that has a shortage of qualified Competent Artisans. This means that employment opportunities are plentiful, and a good solid career choice for anyone thinking of entering this dynamic field. The Rigging Academy of South Africa also offers home study

correspondence to companies, as well as private individuals, who wish to qualify in Rigging (Mechanical Handling) with NQF levels 2, 3 and 4. Telephonic support is available to students if required and additional lessons can be arranged at additional rates based on individual requirements. Once NQF Level 2-4 has been attained, coupled with 18 months of Rigger Assistant work experience, the learner can then be registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training, as well as the Quality Control Council for Trades and Occupations, to write a Trade Test. An Apprenticeship as a Rigger is also a viable choice, where the Apprentice will be trained on the full QCTO accredited apprentice training schedule. Once completion of the minimum work experience of 80 weeks is documented, the apprentice may be registered to write a Trade Test. Once a trainee rigger has successfully passed their Trade Test at the Rigging Academy, they will be qualified with a scarce skill that is in high demand in South Africa, as a Red Seal Rigger. The RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) approach to gaining access to the Rigger Trade Test is undergoing changes that will better service the “qualified by experience” semi-skilled riggers. Here RASA will serve a critical role in the analysis and upskilling of these individuals through our recognized short courses to close the competency gaps, and result in an official qualification as a Red Seal Rigger.

CHAIRMANS DESK
FROM THE CHAIRMANS DESK DATE May/June 2018 As we move beyond the second half of the year I would like to bring all the LEEASA members on what has happened since we last communicated.
EVENTS ECSA;
I attended an ECSA council meeting which gave me the opportunity to express my concerns regarding the back log of LMI application to ECSA which ECSA took seriously and to date I have been party to five sessions of interviews totally five interviews per-session. My concern is the poor quality many of the applicants. In many cases these applicants have no knowledge of the required standards and being very poorly mentored by their fellow registered LMI. LME’s who employ these applicants who are not meeting the required standards and are very often indirectly in breach of DMR 22 and then have the audacity to blame ECSA for their own short comings.
Lifting Africa;
On the 8th of June Lifting Africa hosted its annual golf day which was well attended and overall a great day was had by all that took part. I would just like to personally thank the Lifting Africa team for all their efforts in making this event such a success for the Lifting Equipment industry and by giving LEEASA the opportunity to entertain its golfing members at the second watering hole.
DoL/QTCO
On the 23rd May I attended a meeting at the QTCO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations) were I was invited to this meeting by the DoL as a member of the DoL NCOP committee. The meeting was to map the road forward and get the NCOP committee’s approval on the work done so far towards the qualification for Lifting Machinery operators. There are many challenges in this area as the Lifting Equipment Industry is and will always be a difficult one to overcome when it comes to designated qualifications.
Up-coming Events;
KZN one day conference/workshop will be held on the 15th August in Durban which was requested by the LEEASA members at the last KZN members meeting where by members in the KZN area are able to earn a CPD point. Venue to be advised in due course.
Electra Mining 2018 Exhibition, NASREC
On the 12th and 13th of September 2018 LEEASA will be holding a two day Lifting Equipment Conference at the Black Eagle Electra Mining Exhibition, NASREC Johannesburg. Two CPD points available to registered persons who attend both days. Please look out for further information on all these events on our web site and in “Lifting Africa”. Lifting Africa continues to make a difference!
LEEASA website;
Our website is one our main means of communication which updates everyone on current news and forthcoming events. Please keep an eye on our website for news and announcements of upcoming events. Please use; www.leeasa.co.za Arni Sommer, Chairman. 6

ASK THE EXPERS
ASK THE EXPERTS We received the following question from an LMI that does load testing on a mine: “We have a telehandler here with 3 attachments. I’ve always only tested the machine. Now they want a load test on each attachment. And I say I do not want to hurt the machine three times a year. I am doing NDT on them. Am I wrong or not?” Answer from the experts: At the moment the LMI’s registered for Telehandlers have to test all attachments. (Similarly the fly jib must be test on a mobile cane as long boom.) A visual inspection and a NDT is great but it does not complete what is required by DMR18.5 . What I am saying is that an attachment fixed or non-fixed has to be tested as part of the whole installation. These attachments are not and cannot
be classified as lifting tackle so once they are attached to the lifting machine it becomes part of that lifting machine and it has to be test by an LMI accordingly. It may require a separate load test certificate or listed on the same certificate. It could become difficult to defend oneself on investigation as reasonable practical man in a court of law after the fact that only an inspection and NDT was carried
out but is void of a required load test to the non-fixed attachments that are actual part of lifting machine in question. Have we done enough or have we left ourselves open to prosecution for not applying DMR 18.5 correctly? The LMIs like I said, who are registered for this and who are doing it right are testing all the attachments, which was confirmed at the last SABS SANS TC 110 meeting where this as an inspection standard will be addressed.

Liebherr-Africa launches the new LTR 1090-2.1 Rough-Terrain Crane Lifting Africa recently attended the Liebherr-Africa Customer Day where the unveiling of a first of its kind rough-terrain crane took place. The LRT 1090-2.1 features superb all-terrain maneuverability with a maximum load capacity of a 100-tons. The standard VarioBase® ensures that the Liebherr roughterrain crane delivers a high level of safety and performance. The hydromechanical telescoping system with rope pull technology enables the telescope to be extended to the required length quickly and easily. The telescopic boom can extend from 12.00m to 47.00m with a lattice jib from 10.5m to 19.0m. The machine has a transportation weight of approximately 39-tons, with an operating weight of 52-tons. Mr. Kai Willems, General Manager Mobile and Crawler Cranes LiebherrAfrica, tells us more on this new product. “We based the rough terrain crane on two different crane concepts. The one has a rope boom which means the whole tail is run out with a rope system. The other features a telematics system. The boom length is 47m and a maximum length of the boom with an extension with a swing wedge is so long that we have a hook height of 66m.” According to Mr. Willems, Liebherr hasn’t produced roughterrain cranes for 20 years’ as their focus was more on their successful 12

Mr Mohamed Dawood, Owner of MH Dawood Plant Services, receiving the key to their brand new Liebherr NCB-6 tower crane
Liebherr-Africa (Pty) Ltd, founding in 1958 in the South African city of Springs, was one of the first Liebherr companies outside of Germany. In the 1960s the new location had the purpose of bridging the very expensive transport routes from Europe to Africa. In addition to South Africa itself, the neighbouring countries were also to be supplied. In the beginning, Liebherr-Africa (Pty) Ltd was responsible for the manufacture and sale of tower cranes, specialized cranes and concrete mixers. Today, the Company sells and supports construction machines as well as mining and material handling equipment amongst others, for The Group. Liebherr is not only one of the world's largest manufacturers of construction machinery. The more than 42,000 employees worldwide also help to shape technological advances in many other industries. The Liebherr Group is still managed by the Liebherr family.

Cutting fuel consumption, emissions and noise with the latest evolution in hybrid RTG technology As the drive to improve environmental performance at container terminals continues to gather pace, operators are faced with several choices when it comes to expanding or renewing their rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) crane fleets in order to achieve sustainability gains. Hybrid RTG drivelines have developed significantly in recent years, offering even greater gains in fuel efficiency and reductions in emissions and noise. Kalmar is now proud to introduce its secondgeneration hybrid RTG – a highly fuel-efficient machine that makes no compromises on performance. While vessels and road trucks are the most significant sources of air pollution at container terminals, sustainable hybrid solutions for container handling can help operators reduce their airborne and noise emissions significantly while reducing both fuel and maintenance costs at the same time. Hybrid technologies are a particularly attractive alternative to fully electric drivelines in markets where the quality and reliability of the electricity supply may be poor, or at terminals where the existing infrastructure may not support a cable-reel or bus bar setup. The new Kalmar Hybrid RTG builds on the proven, sustainable performance of the previous-generation model to deliver even greater savings in fuel efficiency, airborne and noise emissions, and maintenance costs. 14
Lifting Africa - May/Jun 2018
The latest in battery and regenerative energy technology The super-capacitor system of the previous model has been replaced by the latest lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology, which has a much higher energy-storage capacity. The Li-ion battery, which comes with a five-year guarantee, is combined with a smaller diesel power unit, which is not only highly fuel-efficient – consuming up to
50% less fuel than a conventionally powered RTG – but also quieter and easier to maintain. Just like the previous-generation model, the new Kalmar Hybrid RTG features a regenerative energy system that stores energy generated by braking and spreader-lowering for later use. The gains in terms of fuel efficiency and lower maintenance requirements can be explained in extremely simple terms: the power unit’s running hours are
Greater savings in fuel efficiency, airborne and noise emissions, and maintenance costs.
Proven Kalmar quality and performance Just like all our other RTG models, the Kalmar Hybrid RTG is a highly efficient and flexible platform that offers industry-leading performance levels and state-of-the-art features. These include an intuitive graphical user interface as standard as well as options such as an electromechanical anti-sway system, SmartProfile stack anti-collision system, and SmartView camera
system. The Kalmar Hybrid RTG can be customized to meet the precise business requirements of each individual operator terminal in terms of height, width and cabin options.
No compromises on performance or sustainability With its ability to cut the cost of every container move while also minimising environmental impact, hybrid RTG technology is a highly attractive option for many terminals around the world. The Kalmar Hybrid RTG combines the latest in Li-ion battery and diesel powerunit technology with Kalmar’s proven and flexible platform to deliver a machine that makes no compromises on performance or sustainability.

MOBILE KNUCKLE BOOM CRANE
Big names in truck cranes Mobile cranes and the future of knuckle and telescopic boom cranes on freight carriers. Taking a view on the mobile crane market, as the world evolves and industries are shaken by new developments. All businesses are being disrupted through various forms of enhancements efficiencies and sometimes just practical solutions. Today's mobile crane industry is dominated by big players who in many cases have amassed fortunes. The mobile crane hire industry has had reasonable growth and rate hikes. Today it is extremely difficult to enter this space unless you have mega bucks to invest. Many of today’s big players have paid up cranes.

Lifting Africa - May/Jun 2018
Mobile crane prices are exceptionally high, running these units through permits, drivers, fuel, etc. is an expensive business. Lift and shift Equipment were the first to bring in the mobile knuckle boom and telescopic boom cranes which were mounted to a standard 8x4 Volvo truck chassis. Both units were legally road registered conforming to the road axle legislation musses. These units did not require any permits. The establishment of this crane combination immediately eats into the mobile crane market
The simplicity of actually going to site and getting the job done has to improve the cost to the consumer. At present the client starts paying once the crane arrives on site. The mobile cranes are rented out on a 9-hour day shift, this is what the client pays. The site establishment is a process of positioning the crane, having another truck haul in, placing the counter weights and then the job begins, you are lucky to be lifting by 10 AM. The crane hire excludes a rigging team to take care of the rigging, positioning, loading or unloading which is a further cost to the consumer. Once completed,

you need to de-mobilise the site which takes more time. Optional solutions: 8x4 Freight carrier with 80-ton mobile knuckle or telescopic boom, 3 axle drawbar trailer driver & assistant. This team can get to site without a permit, immediately position the crane, load or offload. Up to 30 tons on the draw bar trailer and move on. Alternatively, they can carry out site work more efficiently allowing them to do more than one job per day. A mobile knuckle or telescopic mounted to a freight carrier chassis will be in and ready to load in 15 minutes. The pioneers

Combilift sets the benchmark for mass customisation Combilift, the material handling solutions provider, has set the benchmark for mass production of customised innovative products according to Martin McVicar, Managing Director. Lifting Africa was invited to the official opening of the new Combilift Global Headquarters, where Mr McVicar was speaking. Built at a cost of R785 million, the new 500,000 sq.ft (46,500 sq. m) Global Headquarters and new manufacturing facility will allow Combilift to double production. Established in 1998, Combilift currently exports 98% of its products to 85 countries through its 250-strong international dealer network. Combilift is celebrating its 20th year anniversary of lifting innovation.
Mass Customisation An acknowledged world leader in the material-handling sector, Martin McVicar, Managing Director, Combilift, attributes the company’s impressive growth to mass customisation. “Mass customisation is the new frontier for both the customer and the manufacturer. Increasingly customers are expecting products to be tailored to meet their needs. Forklift producers that offer customised products generally produce low volume, but Combilift is setting the benchmark by offering the mass production of tailored products, resulting in a strategic advantage for our customers.” Combilift offers a free logistic and warehouse design service. Combi-Connect allows the customer to see the benefit a Combilift product will bring to their business. “Our engineers proactively design, plan and produce solutions in collaboration with our customers by offering material flow analysis and 3D animations. We work with customers to produce warehouse designs to visualise the capacity potential as well as the optimum flow of materials on their site” says McVicar. The Combilift approach is one of listening to its global network of customers. “We work closely with our customers and dealers to identify solutions that best match their individual specific needs. Combilift invests 7% of its annual turnover (revenue) in Research and Development (R & D) to enhance its customisation capability.”
Growth of Combilift Established by Martin McVicar, Managing Director and Robert in Moffett, Technical Director, in 1998, Combilift is a privately held and fully capitalised company. It developed the world’s first multidirectional all-wheel drive IC engine powered forklift in 1998. In its first year of operation, Combilift produced 18 units, 17 of which were exported. The company has more than doubled in the last 5 years and now has 40,000 units in operation in over 85 countries. Combilift’s product portfolio has expanded way beyond its first multidirectional Combilift, with innovative product development and customisation being a cornerstone of the company’s ethos according to McVicar. “As a company, Combilift has always focused on a number of niche market segments and has a proven track record of launching one to two new products annually. In the first 10 years, Combilift concentrated on the long load material handling sector. Between 2008 and 2018, Combilift diversified its product ranged by developing a number of innovative space saving warehouse and heavy load handling products; the Aisle Master articulated truck and the Straddle Carrier (Combi-SC) respectively. Combilift entered the pedestrian forklift market with the introduction a number of unique products (Combi-WR and Combi-CS) in the last 5 years, which benefit from its patented multi-positional operator tiller arm technology.
New Factory The new 46,500 sq. m purpose–built factory is set on a 100-acre site with room for expansion. With 11 acres of roof space, it is one of the largest manufacturing operations under one single roof in the Republic of Ireland. Incorporating the latest manufacturing processes with a focus on sustainability, the new factory will enable Combilift to double its output in a single shift across all production lines. Four 90 metre- moving assembly lines produce a finished truck every 15 minutes. Certified to international quality and safety management standards, the new headquarters and manufacturing facility has been awarded ISO 9001 international quality management system, ISO 14001 Environment Management and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series 20 Lifting Africa - May/Jun 2018

LOAD TESTING
All Konecranes branches now equipped with water bags for load testing Load testing of cranes is a vitally important part of Konecranes’ service and maintenance programme, especially where older cranes are concerned. In order to speed up the load testing and avoid downtime, all Konecranes branches are now equipped with their own water bags. Konecranes South Africa have also designed and manufactured a Mobile Test Crane for load testing on site. The customer no longer has to wait for his lifting equipment to be returned to site, as all the units are tested on the customers' premises, in their presence. It is unique as it can print the Load Test Certificate on the spot. Lifting equipment is certified proof load tested in accordance with all safety aspects and regulations. This rig can test from chain blocks (manual and air driven) to lever hoists, coffin hoists etc. The Mobile Test Rig can handle a 30-ton capacity and it has a heavy duty battery back-up where electricity is not available. The advantage of testing in this manner has proven far better and much quicker, improving Konecranes' service. “Our investments in fully equipping our branches with mobile test rigs and our own static weights and branded water bags has already proved to have tremendous benefits and advantages,” says John MacDonald, Service, Sales and Marketing Director of Konecranes. “It has most certainly raised the bar in our industry and set new and higher standards in service delivery.

TOWER CRANES
Crane & Hoist Equipment SA supplies tower cranes to WBHO
A Potain MTD218 like the machine which WBHO has purchased from Crane & Hoist Equipment SA.
An in-depth understanding of lifting solutions and in particular tower cranes has seen Crane & Hoist Equipment SA secure an order from WBHO for three used Potain tower cranes. Louw Smit, sales director of Crane & Hoist Equipment SA, says that when a company is adding to its tower crane fleet it is critical that the configuration of the units already in the fleet are considered. “By doing this, it is possible to allow optimum usage of the new cranes as well as the existing equipment by ensuring that the majority of sections and chassis are interchangeable.” Smit says it is also always advisable when making the decision to purchase second-hand tower cranes, that the supplier selected has a sound understanding of the market, the application of this equipment and most importantly has access to quality used equipment. “We sourced two of the tower cranes via our network in Europe and the third one locally. The tower cranes will be thoroughly inspected to ensure the lifting performance of the equipment prior to handing over to the customer,” Smit says. The tower cranes which will bolster the WBHO fleet are a Potain MD238A, a Potain MD 208A and a Potain MTD218. The Potain MD238A offers a 10-ton maximum lifting capacity with a 60-metre jib and will allow good reach onto a project site. This particular tower crane also offers the flexibility of erection using fixing angles making 26

it suitable for confined spaces. Where this is not required, this crane offers the options of being installed on a chassis. Adding to the flexibility of this crane, it is possible to anchor and jack the crane which will provide additional height. The Potain MD208A has a 62,5-metre jib length with a 10-ton maximum capacity. It offers the same flexibility in terms of either fixing angles or chassis mount. Additional height is again possible through jacking. The Potain MDT 218 has a 65-metre jib length with a 10-ton maximum capacity and is installed using fixing angles making it suitable for erection in tight areas.
Crane & Hoist Equipment SA was established late last year to offer a range of tower crane sourcing, refurbishment, sales and site management services. The company has strong supply networks locally and abroad to source used cranes, and also has close links with original equipment suppliers allowing it to provide an above average service to the market.

OVERHEAD CRANES
Exxaro’s 18,4-metre span 50/20-ton machine featuring variable frequency drives on the main lift, long travel and cross travel to facilitate precise positioning of very heavy loads, under test in Condra’s Johannesburg factory mid-April 2018.
More cranes for Grootegeluk Exxaro has again chosen Condra to manufacture high-lift overhead travelling cranes for vehicle workshops at its Grootegeluk Coal Mine, near Lephalale in Limpopo Province. Orders for three cranes placed late last year bring to six the number of these machines supplied by Johannesburg-based Condra since mid-2016, with a total combined order value of some R10-million. The first of the new orders, for two cranes, was secured by authorised Condra distributor H&H Specialised Services in November of last year. A third crane was ordered in December and a further order for a fourth machine is expected soon. H&H Specialised Services will supply staff and technical expertise to install and commission all new cranes, the first two of which have already been delivered. Both are 50-ton double-girder electric overhead travelling cranes with standard two speed hoists, and both have 28
Lifting Africa - May/Jun 2018
spans of 18,4 meters. The third crane, delivered last week, is an 18,4-meter span 50/20ton machine featuring variable frequency drives on the main lift, long travel and cross travel to facilitate precise positioning of very heavy loads. The auxiliary hoist on this machine has a standard two-speed option, while lift heights of the main and auxiliary hoists are 16 metres and 17 meters respectively, similar to those of the first two cranes. Design of all three machines was described by a Condra spokesman as “standard”, although they feature live-axle drives across their design in place of the more common ring-gear configuration, part of Condra’s mandate to keep maintenance costs to a minimum.
Other non-standard elements of the Exxaro contract include special LED lighting, limit switches on the long-travels and cross-travels, and armoured cable on all wiring. The Condra spokesman said that manufacture of all three machines had been straightforward except for painting, which took twice as long as the usual seven days because of heavy rains experienced during this final phase of manufacture.
All cranes were nevertheless delivered on schedule. Condra is in constant pursuit of lower machine maintenance costs, one result of which is the live-axle drives incorporated in the Exxaro cranes.
Additionally, hoists are fitted wherever possible with high tensile-strength ropes to reduce rope diameter and enable a reduction in drum diameter and a smaller gearbox and motor. All these factors all help the customer to contain costs.

HEAVY LIFT
Babcock’s plant division gives customers a lift Babcock’s safety first philosophy has resulted in its plant hire business receiving two orders from Air Products South Africa (Pty) Limited to install two 88-ton cryogenic tanks at its plant in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. Following the first successful, incident-free heavy lift in 2017, Air Products contracted Babcock to undertake the transport, cranage and rigging to install a second cryogenic tank at the same plant this year. The cryogenic tanks are used to store CO₂. The second installation will be undertaken by the Liebherr LTM1500 500-ton mobile crane and multi-axle trailer, which was also used for the first lift. Despite it being an extremely large crane used for heavy lifts, the Liebherr LTM1500 is quick and easy to erect. Michael Hawkins, Heavy Lift Manager at Babcock, says that the first tank was installed within four hours using a team of four Babcock employees and six rigging specialists. “The first installation for Air Products went so well that they requested we manage the entire project for the second tank, including transporting the tank from Germiston to Newcastle, cranage and rigging,” explains Hawkins. Air Products manufactures, supplies and distributes industrial and 30

specialty gas products and chemicals to customers in South Africa and internationally in the steel, stainless steel, chemical, petrochemical, and engineering industries. Hawkins reports that in addition to providing incident-free heavy lifting services to Air Products, Babcock has successfully completed various other
heavy lifts in the last few months. The company places emphasis on safety and training and prides itself on its safety record, which currently stands at 20 years without a single product fail or injury. In February 2018 Babcock received an order from Transnet to upright an 180-ton electric locomotive that had
HEAVY LIFT
derailed in Katu. As the line could only be isolated for three hours, the recovery of the locomotive was undertaken utilising a Liebherr LTM1400 and LTM1500 in tandem to place the locomotive back on the tracks. “Babcock provided the cranage and rigging and the successful outcome has since resulted in Babcock receiving further orders for locomotive recoveries from Transnet,” says Hawkins. Earlier this year Babcock was called on by Sappi Ngodwana to install 10 evaporator columns, ranging in mass from 36 to 74 tons, as well as the offloading of a complex cooler weighing 95 tons. These lifts once again utilised the 500-ton Liebherr LTM1500 mobile crane. During Sappi Ngodwana’s annual shutdown in May, Babcock will be removing an existing cooler and installing a new cooler using a Liebherr LG1550; a 600-ton lattice boom crane with 200-ton counterweights on the carrier deck. Babcock is the largest empowered mobile crane and plant service provider in South Africa with a substantial fleet of cranes with lifting capacities from 8 to 600 tons. The company specialises in the provision of mobile crane services, rigging equipment and expertise, abnormal transport, and welding and mechanical construction plant. Babcock has a combined inventory of more than 40 000 items, distributed nationally and within the other South African Development Community countries, for a wide range of contracts ranging from infrastructure projects and mines to wind farms and marine projects. The company moves equipment into place with a focus on safety and clear communication and planning while its QR code scan and tracking system monitors the lifecycle of every single item of inventory so as to have instant access to the items’ hire history, service intervals and related parts. In addition, Babcock’s plant is serviced after every hire and inspections are carried out every three months to guarantee the highest in safety and operational standards.

HEAVY LIFT
Going in from above avoids dismantling a plant A fertilizer company in Southern Alberta, Canada, was updating and replacing aged components from the 1970’s in their nitrogen complex. The main item that needed replacing was a reactor vessel, which assists in creating urea to create fertilizer. The new vessel was made in Austria and the client required the most efficient way to get it installed at its final destination. So, four years before the actual exchange they engaged Mammoet. The early involvement enabled us to deliver and execute a comprehensive plan that optimized the overall approach that identified and seized several time saving opportunities. Creative thinking and the right equipment minimize downtime. Using their global network, resources and longstanding expertise in factory-to-foundation projects. Mammoet orchestrated all transport modalities; barging, ocean transport, rail transport, jack & slide, and finally SPMT transport. Mammoet ensured these modalities were wellaligned to one another in order to realize the most efficient logistics possible. To accommodate transport of the vessel Mammoet designed shipping saddles that were optimal for ocean and rail. The saddles eliminated the need to re-secure the vessel at each trans-loading point. This helped save time and money and contributed to a safe journey for the vessel. The original vessel, weighing 410 metric tons was located in a 70m high building. For its exchange, the client had originally planned to dismantle a side of the building. Within their extensive array of cranes, Mammoet were able to provide a LR 11350 – with a boom length of 126m and maximum lifting capacity of up to 1,350 metric tons, the crane would be able to perform the exchange without the need to dismantle and reconstruct part of the building. This reduced expensive downtime and reconstruction costs. Mammoet’s comprehensive approach provided for a safe and efficient exchange of the reactor vessel, helping the customer to restart fertilizer production earlier than originally planned.

JIP CRANES
Palfinger MFA jib: maximum reach and flexibility With the new MFA jib, Palfinger has increased the maximum reach of the TEC crane series by another 5.5 meters. Above all, the new application from Palfinger will meet the special requirements for longer reach and greater flexibility from customers in the height logistics industry. The MFA jib can be used to lift loads to previously inaccessible positions and, as a result, perform extraordinary operations. The Palfinger loader crane is valued by customers as a multifunctional piece of equipment that can be deployed for a wide range of tasks. A variety of existing attachments supports this flexibility. With the new MFA jib, the crane can now be perfectly equipped for height logistics tasks that require an even longer reach. Both a rigid and swiveling version are being introduced. The optional angle adjustment of between +20° and -60° makes it possible to perform operations above projecting edges that were previously inaccessible for the crane, uniting the benefits of a mechanical extension with the flexibility of a fly jib. The MFA jib permits a maximum lifting capacity of 350–650 kg and can also be used for rope winch operation.
Time and cost savings and ease of use The MFA jib is connected to the standardised multifunction adapter (MFA). For users, the big advantage of this universal connection is that all the attachments can be secured and exchanged quickly and easily. In practice, this results in huge time and cost savings. "The Palfinger MFA jib is the perfect addition to the PK 200002 L SH with PJ 300. It is easy to use and impressed
me right from the start", explains Josef Lierzer from Hierzmann Transporte in Unterpremstätten, Steiermark, Austria. Josef is one of the first crane operators to use the MFA jib.
Requirements and availability
New TOOL software function
Like the multifunction adapter, the MFA jib is available for all cranes in the TEC series and fly jibs with P-Profiles and is available now.
The MFA jib is integrated in the electronic high-performance stability control system (HPSC) using the new TOOL software function. TOOL enables the various additional devices connected via the MFA to be included in the calculation of the stability limit for P-Profile cranes.

FORKLIFT
Breathing new life into old forklifts An in-depth understanding of lifting solutions and in particular tower cranes has seen Crane & Hoist Equipment SA secure an order from WBHO for three used Potain tower cranes. At this year’s NAMPO Harvest Days, Goscor Rental Company showcased its refurbished Doosan D25S-5 forklift, reaffirming that when times are this tough, rebuilding equipment breathes new life into old gear, thereby creating opportunities for farmers who may be cash strapped to buy new. That southern African farmers are facing multiple challenges,
34
Lifting Africa - May/Jun 2018
including climate change and resultant droughts and poor yields, is no overstatement. Added to this is the lack of access to finance, which makes it difficult for farmers to acquire the capital equipment they need to run productive and profitable operations. As a solutions provider to the agricultural community, Goscor Rental Company (GRC), a division of Goscor Lift
Truck Company (GLTC), has identified the need to offer machine rebuilding services for the full range of products in its stable, allowing customers to extend the lifecycles of their existing forklifts, or buying refurbished or fully rebuilt units that have the same capabilities of a new unit, but coming at a much lesser price. Lavesh Gunpath, Sales Executive at GRC, says NAMPO, as the premier
FORKLIFTS
agricultural show, and the biggest of its nature in the southern hemisphere, offered a perfect platform for GRC to showcase its refurbishing prowess, allowing customers to physically see the quality of these machines. “In these challenging economic times, it is sometimes difficult for farmers to buy new and we have therefore made the refurbishment route a viable alternative. We established a dedicated Rebuild Centre in March 2017, which is purely focused on refurbishing ex-long term rental units,” explains Gunpath. “Our refurbishment division has proven its ability to make previously used machines as good as new.” All refurbishments are completed in-house by experienced technicians and close attention is paid to the quality and long-term utility as each component receives the necessary attention to increase the lifetime. Refurbishing services span across all the forklift brands in the GLTC stable. These include Crown, Doosan, Bendi and Hubtex. Each refurbishing job starts with a full analysis that documents each step the refurbishing team needs to take to ensure greater quality. “The refurbishing process includes engine and transmission compression testing; drainage and filling of oil and lubricants; refurbishment of hydraulic systems (change hydraulic pipes if required); mast refurbishment; new tyres; a complete respray; new stickers; load testing and new battery installation,” says Gunpath. With each refurbished unit, customers get 250 hour or 3-month warranty, whichever comes first. “From the interactions we had with customers at NAMPO, many farmers showed interest in the 36-month lease-toown option which we offer on our refurbished units,” concludes Gunpath.
