With stores that resemble art installations rather than the fashion boutiques they truly are, L’Éclaireur’s innovative philosophy is apparent from the outset. Founders Armand & Martine Hadida have all but redefined the Parisian shopping experience. The high luxury concept store Le Royal L’Éclaireur located in Le Royal Monceau is inspired by the host hotel and the vanguard nature of this reinvented Parisian palace.
A multifunctional concept store in the heart of historic HautMarais, Merci combines a thoughtfully chosen collection of goods in categories from fashion and beauty to homeware and interior design. Embracing the retail experience as a meaningful, cultural affair, the store features a used book café, a cinema café and a cantine restaurant. Shopping as it should be.
The Parisians have never really been taken by tea – that is until the Japanese designed version by Kengo Kuma arrived, with its minimalist, exotic and cutting-edge vibe. Introducing tea as a means to achieving a zenlike state through the focusing of all five senses, Jugetsudo’s tea room interior incorporates bamboo hanging hauntingly from the ceiling and a ceremonial kettle.
In a space as considered and intimate as its namesake’s designs, the Damir Doma boutique combines calculatedly used walls with brassy polished metal. Hidden away in a cosy courtyard, the outlet provides a fitting setting in which to discover the multicultural talent of this Croatian-born, Berlin-schooled prodigy in the heart of Paris’s prestigious shopping district.

MONSIEUR BLEU
Boasting the likes of Marcel Proust and Coco Chanel among its former clientele, Angélina is a microcosm of former French high society, right down to its Niermans-designed Belle Epoque decor. Today, the tearoom continues to live firmly and proudly in the past, recreating history so convincingly that it’s easy to forget modern life continues outside those gold rimmed doors and pastry.
Designed by none other than cult film director David Lynch, Club Silencio is inspired by the eerie venue of the same name from Mulholland Drive. The club is open to members only before midnight, and plays host to a variety of exclusive cultural events. Non-members can always join the party at Social Club, located next to. Or head to the Experimental Cocktail Club in the parallel street – curiously intimate.
Tender cuts of superior steak accompanied by excellent South American wine make this simple Argentinian restaurant stand out from the crowd. Once a butcher’s, and still featuring the shop’s characteristic tiled walls, the small space is now a favourite haunt of the local creative crowd as well as the occasional celebrity.
With an enviable location overlooking the Seine towards the Eiffel Tower, Monsieur Bleu is part of the contemporary art space and centre Palais de Tokyo. Casual and convivial, yet with a serious self image, the restaurant was designed by architect Joseph Dirand and provides a welcome, authentic design antidote to the usual tourist trap eateries in the area.

(P O L I CE M A RRIED H E A D Q UA RTERS)
Named after the famous notes of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Tang Tang Tang Tang is a new lifestyle label by entrepreneur David Tang, the same man who established luxury brand Shanghai Tang. The 325-sqm retail store is housed in what was once a pawn shop that was built in 1888. Designed to replicate a Hong Kong apartment, it includes the living room, dining room, bedroom and wardrobe. The retro-style home features a wide array of housewares, gadgets and small appliances, and accessories like tote bags and picture frames. The signature and key colours of grey and yellow run throughout the store and are complemented by beautiful marble flooring. The high ceilings and the original arches of the street-level area are retained, so when some decorative antique pieces are added, the store will have a stylishly colonial Hong Kong feel with a modern, Western twist.
After laying dormant for almost 14 years, the former Police Married Quarters on Hollywood Road has found new life as Hong Kong’s latest creative hub for local designers of diverse disciplines. The 18,000-sqm former heritage site houses 130 units rented out to selected locally based creative talents from the fields of design, fashion and art. The site is a grade three historical building, and consists of a pair of expansive, functional buildings that were built in 1951. Today, it is a creative centre showcasing HK’s high quality brands, innovative dining ventures, and a popular events space. It remains the place to be for Hong Kong’s hipsters and younger, design-conscious crowd. The tenants at PMQ are a mix of established and upcoming names from the worlds of design, art and hospitality; studios, galleries, pop-up stores, cafés, bars and restaurants dot the complex.

PENTAHOTEL HONG KONG
3
As a city that is forever moving forward, Hong Kong has no shortage of new hotels coming to the fore. Pentahotel opened its doors in Diamond Hill, a fast-emerging district in East Kowloon. The 32-storey hotel’s modern exterior creates an interesting juxtaposition with the surroundings, since it is located at 19 Luk Hop Street, which consists of several old properties. Rooms are modern and simply furnished with a youthful appeal. The hotel describes its style as “rustic” and this is evident from the use of lightly textured wood and aged brick walls. The hotel features a number of artworks showcasing a collage of pictures of Hong Kong. The funky and iconic designs are produced through a partnership with local design brand G.O.D to inject a distinctive Hong Kong flavour into the design of each room. This youthful and fun vibe extends throughout the hotel. Staff uniforms comprise black shirts, jeans and sneakers footwear.

Whenever passing through the Flat Iron District in Lower Manhattan, it is impossible not to be drawn into the ABC Carpet and Home store. The eclectic assortment of beautiful textiles, apparel, and furniture are artfully merchandised, with visual stimulation to be found in every nook and cranny of the store. With many one-of-a-kind and luxury pieces on display, ABC is an exciting sensory experience that showcases the modern home as a carefully curated and cultivated space. Whether you are shopping, browsing or stopping in for a bite at the famous ABC Kitchen, your senses pull you in many different directions. New Yorkers know ABC as the place for cutting-edge home inspiration.
DOVER STREET M ARKET Dover Street Market is a concept store situated in an upscale neighbourhood on Lexington Avenue on the East Side of Manhattan. The New York location is one among the four company stores, owned by brand Comme des Garçons, and the first and only location in the Western Hemisphere. The store stands tall at seven levels and even houses its very own eatery, the Rose Bakery, on its first floor. Dover Street Market carries some of the worlds most avant-garde and artistic luxury designer brands like Prada and Rick Owens. While their merchandise assortment is quite fashion forward, most find the store artistically stimulating and an inspiration in and of itself. It is currently one of the most exceptional shopping experiences in New York City.

STR AND
3
Strand is one of New York’s most unique retail experiences, specialising solely in the business of books. The store first opened its doors in the 1920s along with many other bookstores nearby, creating a mini-community of bookshops in Lower Manhattan. Today however, Strand is the only remaining shop of its kind in this area, which indicates that it is a truly special retailer. Customers are able to visit and comb through the assortment of books outside the store being sold at a value of just one dollar. Also, shoppers are able to sell old books to the store so that each book can continue to enlighten more readers instead of collecting dust on a shelf. This makes shopping there particularly exciting, as you never know what rare copies you might come across. Every visit is an adventure.
BERRY PARK Berry Park, located in Brooklyn on the border of Williamsburg and Greenpoint, is a rooftop bar and eatery. It offers one of the most fun and exciting dining experiences within New York City. The venue is located close to the East River and has incredible views of Lower Manhattan. Billing themselves as “Williamsburg’s premier soccer bar,” Berry Park shows soccer as well as other major sporting events on their two projector screens for diners. The bar serves food which bridges a German and American style, elevating classics like soft pretzels and ice cream sandwiches with exceptional ingredients and new flavours. Perfect for anyone looking for a quintessential New York City rooftop dining experience.

LONDON
THE LONDON EDITION BERNER’S TAVERN THE BASEMENT Just off Oxford Street lies one of London’s most stylish hotspots. With its grand foyer, The London Edition is a beautiful juxtaposition of late Baroque architecture with modern art installations. A hotel, but also a great place to socialise, the venue’s visitors can expect to rub shoulders with celebrities, designers and other recognisable faces. Berner’s Tavern, its glamorous restaurant, is studded up to the ceiling in an array of artworks. Featuring beautiful dishes created by expert hands, the restaurant is a feast for the eye and is, in our opinion, the most stylish place to be in London. However, the party doesn’t stop there. Head down to the stylish nightclub, The Basement, and see some of your favourite up-and-coming music artists and DJs performing beneath the hotel. We enjoy cocktails created by their talented bartenders; a night out here is always memorable.

With the smell of fresh, new books in the air, Foyles Bookshop has recently had a brand and image change, making it one of London’s most appealing book retail spaces. Located in the old Central St. Martin’s School of Art and Design, the store space has a Scandinavian feel with its natural woods and smooth white finishes. Thousands of books and magazines are beautifully displayed, perfect for browsing and finding something special. Its shelves hold an array of the latest design magazines and books from independent publishing houses. We love this store because of its large size, unique reads and contemporary design. It keeps us up-to-date with design, fashion, retail and so much more.

NOVA IDEA LUCE
The reason it’s the best in Ancona is because it contains almost every style of clothing, from elegant to sporty, ceremony to casual. They have clothes for every need, divided into several areas. Bikers, metal, dark, classic, trendy, vintage and many more styles, all under one roof. It’s full of accessories and everything you see inside the store, furniture included, is for sale. Gigolé is also unique from the outside: it has fighter-bomber stuck in the roof. You can’t miss it.
If you come to Ancona and you want to have the best food and drink experience, you must go to il Passetto Restaurant. From outside you are attracted by its oval shape, which is absolutely unique. The building was built in the 50s, but the contrast with the contemporary design of some components in the composition is amazing. Once you get inside, expect luxury furniture, excellent service, and a rooftop with a fantastic view over the sea. The food and wines are exceptional and you can taste some of the best Italian meat and fish specialities. Highly recommended!
The first selection is a concept design store called Nova Idea Luce, which deals in design accessories and lighting. If you are searching for a rare design fitting, they have it for sure. The exhibition space is amazing, full of colour and odd objects for every need. Nova Idea Luce is the most important reseller of famous design objects from brands such as Castiglioni, Pesce, Saarinen, Flos, Vitra and so on. For swatches, lamps, chairs, radio and ornaments, Nova is the best.

This bookstore sells new and vintage books, movies and DVDs, and features a reading lounge and other facilities. The facade, by Klein Dytham Architecture, is made up of myriad interwoven T-shapes in a nod to featured retailer Tsutaya. In addition to this masterfully subtle branding, the store is innovative in the sense that it is not just somewhere to shop; it’s also a place to spend time.
Despite its name Hotel Emanon is a new and stylish restaurant and coffee bar. Though the venue is not actually a hotel, it embodies the values and atmosphere of that industry by offering impeccable and intuitive service, and all the other features of a great hotel – except the option to overnight. Emanon is NoName spelt backwards, and everything there is for sale, including the unique furniture and accessories.
Bicqlo is a collaboration store by fashion giants Uniqlo and home appliance retailer Bic Camera. The space is located in the dynamic retail district of Shinjuku, and stocks items by both brands. The mannequins wear Uniqlo clothes, and are displayed using home electronics such as cameras and vacuum cleaners. The store is energetic and garners universal appeal by offering the very latest products from the fashion and interiors worlds.

With its exposed brickwork, leather antique armchairs and book-lined walls, the Brooklyn Parlor in Shinjuku lives up to its name as a hip New York haunt. The theme even extends to the menu, which includes pancakes, burgers and Brooklyn beer. Another impressive imitation, upscale Agave in Roppongi replicates the look and feel of a Mexican cantina, offering over 300 different types of tequila. The bar is stylishly designed with a cosy atmosphere. The Starbucks Meguro also stands out. Specially designed to fit with the local Japanese setting, the store adopts the atmosphere of a traditional tearoom; it displays traditional Japanese paintings, has partitions like shoji sliding doors, and also sells Japanese ceramic cups. As a global brand, Starbucks has a unified image around the world, but it is innovating by creating stores that adapt to the local taste.
