6 – 7pm: Opening reception 7 – 7.45pm: Launch of Deaffest & Ben Steiner Bursary Film Première A screening of Stephen Collins’ film Luke Starr which won the Ben Steiner Bursary in 2010 with an intro by the director himself. A fantasy comedy about a miserable man who finds a mysterious photo booth.

Another chance to catch Luke Starr along with a trailer for the nominated Gala films.

Why do we have film festivals, what’s the benefit for the filmmaker and why should you submit your films to them? Rich Warren from Encounters Bristol International Film Festival will address these issues and share his experience of attending festivals around Europe.

Encounters Bristol International Film Festival is delighted to present the 2010 Best of British programme at Deaffest 2011. Don’t miss this chance to delve into the brilliant and occasionally weird imagination of some of the most talented emerging British directors around.

Louis Neethling hosts a talk about the new project Sign Media. With the support of the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Union, the Sign Media project aims to break down these barriers with an innovative and accessible online learning resource, promoting career development and a new level of confidence for Deaf media professionals.

8pm: Film & TV Gala Awards The red carpet Gala event returns with awards for Best Drama, Best Documentary, Best Experimental and Best TV Programme. Our host for the evening will be Deaf British - Australian filmmaker Nadia Nadaraja who has worked as a presenter for BSLBT programmes ‘Wicked’ and ‘Snapshot’. In 2010, she won the award for Best Young Director at the 5th International Disability Film Festival Awards. There will be live dance performances alongside entertainment from sign language performer Ace Seyed-Ali Mahbaz, who has been touring Europe and comes to Deaffest for the first time to perform ‘Danke’ [Thank You] and ‘Zeit schnell um’ [Time Fast]. Tickets cost: £15 adults / £11 under 15s. Doors open 7.45pm. Followed by a Networking Party in Lock Works and courtyard, 10pm - late.
