This evening we are delighted to present the premiere of Pete Blaggit, the second feature from Wolverhampton based filmmaker Mark Jeavons. Starring ex Coronation Street and Shortland Street star, Adam Rickitt, this has been 4 years in the making for the director, who started his career in 2002 as a trainee at Light House before moving on to write and direct his own films. Pete Blaggit is one angry man. A wedding video guy for more than 20 years, he’s just about had enough of filming happy couples tying the knot. It seems that life can’t get much worse for Pete. But it does. Everything changes one night when Pete is abducted and raped…by aliens! A surreal comedy drama about one man’s journey of self discovery. If you’ve never had a Kipper Tie with two sugars then you’ve never had a cup of tea in the Black Country. Susan was raised in the West Midlands by her Scottish family. She has the Glaswegian attitude, which doesn’t match her Brummie drawl. This Brumwegian (or Glummie) has been badly dubbed all her life! Come and listen to Susan’s hilarious obsession with accents. This show is everything you wanted to know about accents but woz afraid to ask cos you don’t sound posh enough innit? Think Frankie Boyle meets Julie Walters! The show received rave reviews at its debut at this year’s Edinburgh Festival.

A nostalgic look back at the changing face of shopping and trade in Wolverhampton curated by the Media Archive for Central England. From the market stall to the high street, the precinct to the shopping centre, join MACE in looking back at our retail history through local archive film. We’ll be remembering the demise of the much loved Victorian Queen’s and Central arcades and other buildings that are long gone, and celebrating the city’s high street characters. Phil Leach will lead a discussion after the screening when you are invited to bring your own memories and comments about the changing face of shopping in Wolverhampton.

Suitable for aged 14 and over. For more info visit: www.susan-murray.co.uk

An Evening of Ambiance with Thee Moths & Mutate is the night to embrace the winter cold in the atmospheric atrium, with visuals and candle light, enjoy a picnic on the cobbles and a feast for your ears. Both Thee Moths & Mutate have been making music since the early 90s. Thee Moths is the name of Stourbridge based visual and sound artist Alex Botten-Clark. Thee Moths build arching walls of choral singing, buzzing massed synths, twinkling bells, and rattling percussion. Thee Moths recently performed at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, hot off the back of a guerrilla performance at the Frankfurt Museum of Communication. Mutate is a no-nonsense project of Ade Bordicott, founder of Birmingham’s own Stray Recordings and one half of Señor Citizen. Mutate’s sound can vary from feedback-laden dub to guitar drone that imitates 70s synth and wistful harmonics.

URBAN FICTIONS

MAIN GALLERY

Urban Fictions by Richard Rowland Urban Fictions is a photographic and video exhibition examining the emergence of simulated urban developments in Eastern China. The work documents a series of new towns which have been constructed based on different European architectural models, including English, French, Dutch, German and Swedish pastiches.

Richard’s work also raises questions on photography itself. He ‘documents’ his subjects, but acknowledges a certain artifice and ambivalence in what might be termed a ‘documentary aesthetic’. The relationship between visual documentation and artificial environments offered by Urban Fictions challenges our understanding of the photographic image as document. The use of both the still and moving image in Urban Fictions recalls the complex convergences that occurred during the origins of documentary photography as it developed out of documentary film.

These idealised reconstructions appear as hyperreal utopias that seek to create rather than reflect historical reality. The exhibition presents a complex social depiction of aspects of modern China, and its relationship with the West. It offers us a way in which we might imagine and observe early twenty-first century China as a newly international community. Through its images of modern China the exhibition raises compelling questions about the complex, shifting and uncertain character of an increasingly international world.

Richard Rowland studied at the University of Brighton. He has participated in group exhibitions across Europe including ‘This Crazy World’, Kosovo National Art Gallery, Pristina and Exposicio de Fotographies, Escola Massana, Barcelona, and had a solo exhibition at Lighthouse, Brighton. His book, The Regency Project, was published by anotherpublication in 2007, and he is currently working on a book with FAR Architecture Center Shanghai. Urban Fictions is supported by Arts Council England.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK

The true story of a man who stumbled into a lucrative career as one of Europe’s biggest drug dealers comes to the screen in this comedy-drama, adapted from the autobiography by the real-life Howard Marks. Howard Marks (Rhys Ifans) was a young Welshman studying at Oxford University where he discovered marijuana. Mark struck up a friendship with the dealers which planted the seeds for his future career. Marks is good friends with Rhys Ifans, who was cast to play him in the film.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK Fri 5 - Thu 11 Nov Cert 12A, 2hr Dir. David Fincher, USA, 2010 Director David Fincher explores the moment at which Facebook, the most revolutionary social phenomena of the new century, was invented through the warring perspectives of the super-smart young men who each claimed to be there at its inception. The result is a drama rife with both creation and destruction; one that audaciously avoids a singular POV, but instead, by tracking duelling narratives, mirrors the clashing truths and constantly morphing social relationships that define our time.

ENTER THE VOID Fri 12, Sun 14, Mon 15, Wed 17 & Thu 18 Nov Cert 18, 2hr22 Dir. Gaspar Noe, Fra/Ger, 2009 Set in the heart of Tokyo, the film tells the tale of Oscar, a young American drug-dealer, struggling to protect his sister, following the death of their parents. Told entirely from Oscar’s point of view, even after his death early in the film, we are taken on an unprecedented journey through the darker side of life and death. Expertly exploring the very subject of humanity itself, Enter the Void is a hedonistic vision of the dangers that lie within us all. Nominated for the Palme D’Or at Cannes 2009.

First-time helmer Edward McHenry heads up this UK war spoof using stop-motion action figures, with voices provided by a top-notch British cast led by Ewan McGregor and Rosamund Pike. Jackboots on Whitehall explores what would happen if the Battle of Britain had been won by the Germans. Timothy Spall provides the voice of Winston Churchill, while Adolf Hitler is realised by Alan Cumming, with the rest of the cast rounded out by Tom Wilkinson and Richard O’Brien.

In a happy suburban neighbourhood sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbours, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. Armed with his arsenal of freeze rays and battle-ready vehicles, Gru vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters three little orphaned girls who see something in him that no one else ever has: a potential Dad.

Spanning 20 years and 2 continents, this clay animated film tells of a pen-pal relationship between two very different people: Mary Dinkle (Toni Collette), a chubby, lonely 8-year-old living in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia; and Max Horovitz (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), a severely obese, 44-year-old Jewish man with Aspergers Syndrome living in New York City. This unlikely pair exchange letters discussing every possible subject, revealing they have more in common than you might first expect.

Cert 12A, 2hr10 Dir. Mike Leigh, UK, 2010 British filmmaker Mike Leigh delivers another honest portrait of ordinary people in this comedy drama. Tom (Jim Broadbent) and Gerri are a couple drifting past middle age into their sixties. They have a happy marriage and a grown son, Joe, an activist lawyer who hasn’t settled down yet. One of Gerri’s co-workers, Mary, puts up a facade of desperate good cheer despite being lonely. Gerri is startled when Mary begins openly flirting with Joe, more than 20 years her junior. Mary’s troubles only grow worse when she discovers Katie, Joe’s new girlfriend.

LET ME IN

Against a backdrop of war and poverty, Out of the Ashes traces the extraordinary journey of a team of young Afghan men, as they chase a seemingly impossible dream. This feature-length documentary follows the Afghan cricket team in their quest against the odds to qualify for the 2011 World Cup. Backed by Oscar winning director and cricket fan Sam Mendes, Out of the Ashes follows the squad over two years as they go from playing on rubble pitches to the international league tables.

ANOTHER YEAR

MARY AND MAX

A powerful drama about the passions and violence of a group of soldiers stationed at Pearl Harbour just before World War II. Based on the massive novel by James Jones, deemed near impossible to adapt for the screen because of its strong sexual content and language, From Here to Eternity emerged as a lavish, star-studded spectacle. Starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed and Frank Sinatra.

Burke and Hare is a comedic take on the true story of the 1828 Edinburgh body-snatchers William Burke (Simon Pegg) and William Hare (Andy Serkis). These two Irish entrepreneurs, spurred on by a chance meeting with a gorgeous actress (Isla Fisher), discover that a dead body can fetch a hefty price when the demands of the leading medical professors Dr. Knox (Tom Wilkinson) and Dr. Monroe (Tim Curry) reach beyond that of the local supply.

The Arbor is the powerful true story of Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar and her daughter Lorraine. When Andrea died, tragically at the age of 29 in 1990, Lorraine was just ten years old. The Arbor catches up with Lorraine in the present day, also at the age of 29; ostracised from her mother’s family and in prison undergoing rehab. Through compelling interviews we learn that Lorraine blames her mother for all that is wrong in her life. A truly unique blend of documentary and fiction, The Arbor is a captivating and revelatory piece of cinema.

LET ME IN

Abby is a secretive 12-year old girl, who moves next door to Owen, a social outcast who is viciously bullied at school. Owen forms a profound bond with his new neighbour but as a string of grisly murders occupy the town, Owen has to confront the reality that this seemingly innocent girl is really a savage vampire. Let Me In is a haunting and provocative thriller produced by legendary British horror brand Hammer Films and based on the best-selling novel Let the Right One In.

This was the first colour film that the late great Norman Wisdom starred in. Wisdom’s character works for Grimsdale’s Dairy as a milkman in competition with Consolidated Dairies, an ever-growing rival company. Much of the humour centres on classic slapstick comedy, with Norman encountering various comedic escapades, from being dragged around gardens by an errant lawnmower, to using the fire brigade’s high pressure hosepipes to blast fireman off their ladders.

As an assassin, Jack (George Clooney) is constantly on the move and always alone. After a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected, Jack retreats to the Italian countryside. He relishes being away from death for a spell as he holes up in a small medieval town. While there, Jack pursues a torrid liaison with a beautiful woman named Clara. Jack and Clara’s time together evolves into a romance, one seemingly free of danger. But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate. This suspense thriller is directed by Anton Corbijn (Control).

THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST

In the last instalment of the film adaptations of the Millennium trilogy, we find Lisbeth Salander in an intensive care unit with a bullet wound to her head. She’s fighting for her life in more ways than one: if and when she recovers, she’ll be taken to stand trial for three murders. The Kids Are All Right is the heartfelt new comedy starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. Two teenaged children get the notion to seek out their biological father and introduce him into the family life that their two mothers (Bening and Moore) have built for them. Once the donor (Ruffalo) is found, the household will never be the same again. The New York Times raves that this film is “a generous, nearly note perfect portrait of a modern family.”

Ray Winstone plays Frank Horner, a solicitor based in a small town in Wiltshire. His daughter Helen is leaving home for the first time to go to university and move in with her boyfriend. Frank has to come to terms with parting from his ‘princess’, whom he has smothered with love for over 20 years. How does he cope when something unexpected happens to her? Frank has to search for the answers, which brings him into contact with the murky world of Helen’s dark side.

Amidst power cuts and strikes, Joe McCain is bored of a life that’s going nowhere. Enter hairdresser Jane. She is blonde, brassy, and moving to the beat of a whole new world of sound, movement and all-nighter dancing at The Wigan Casino, the home of Northern Soul. Mandy, a cute and spunky artist, is eager to help Joe become the cool “soul boy” he wants to be. ROUND IRELAND WITH A FRIDGE Mon 20 - Thu 23 Dec Cert PG, 1hr29 Dir. Ed Bye, UK, 2010

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA

When comedian Tony Hawks accepted a drunken bet that he couldn’t hitchhike around the whole of Ireland with his fridge, little did he know that the trip would change his life and turn him into a bestselling writer. Tony has adapted his book for the screen and the result is a life-affirming British comedy that takes him on a romantic, surreal journey. Along the way, Tony and his fridge fall for a roving radio reporter, encounter a philosophical toiletries salesman, ride the Atlantic with a surfing barman and end their trip with a triumphal entry into Dublin.

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA Thu 23 Dec Cert U, 1hr31 Dir. Sam Wood, 1935, USA Cost: £6.50 / £5.20 conc.

A Night at the Opera is generally regarded as the last great installment in the Marx Brothers’ film series. It follows Groucho, Chico and Harpo as they battle arrogant opera tenor Lassparri in an attempt to help their friend Ricardo take centre stage and win the heart of Rosa, leading to the climax in which the Marxes sabotage the opening night of Il Trovatore. A Night at the Opera is guaranteed to have you giggling from one end of the musical scale to the other. Celebrate the festive season with a complimentary cocktail for all ticket holders.
