Big Screen Game Challenge:
Working alongside Game, Light House will be hosting the final showdown for Wolverhampton’s very own Capcom Street Fighter tournament on the big screen. This will bring together a range of gamers from across the West Midlands, with preliminary matches being played throughout the day. The final battle will involve three round matches of the Black Country’s greatest contenders and the crowned winners will take home trophies. Proceeds will be donated to the UK’s Children Hospice. Spectators are welcome.

This autumn children across the Black Country are being encouraged to read one of Roald Dahl’s most well loved books – Matilda, the uplifting and hilarious tale of a girl with incredible powers. Working together with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Puffin Books, The Roald Dahl Black Country Creative Challenge is a Black Country Children’s Services Improvement Partnership initiative, designed to get children reading. The Roald Dahl Black Country Creative Challenge is a special family event suitable for families and children aged 7+. The 45 minute session will include an interactive Matilda story-telling experience, featuring extracts from the book performed by three RSC actors. As part of the ticket price, all young people attending the event will also get a copy of Matilda, courtesy of Puffin Books.

This evening we are delighted to showcase Made in Birmingham, a 60 minute music documentary that charts the cultural, social and political background of three music genres that have been strongly asssociated with the city: Reggae, Punk & Bhangra. The film, directed by Black Country based director Deborah Aston, includes archive footage and contributions from some of the most exciting and influential bands and artists to come out of the West Midlands, including Brian Travers (UB40) Dennis Seaton (Musical Youth), Amlak Tafari (Steel Pulse), Pete Hammond and Paul Foad (Au Pairs), Pato Banton (The Beat), and Kevin Rowland (Dexys Midnight Runners) to name a few. The Screen Forum will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and networking in Lock Works. The film is funded through the Digital Archive Fund c/o Screen WM and draws extensively on a host of regional, national and international film archives, including the Media Archive for Central England, ITV, OOM Gallery, and Artclips/Paris.

Tony Bayliss’ new book Past Continuous tells the tale of Matthew, a clever and musically gifted man who withdraws into himself after romantic disappointment, and Sophie a bright ambitious girl, yearning for a soul mate. Tony Bayliss has published poetry and several other books, both fiction and non-fiction. In August 2009, Past Continuous was placed on writers’ website www.autonomy.com, and within five months rose to number one in the rankings over thousands of books worldwide. This led to a publishing deal with Sparkling Books. Tony will be on hand throughout the evening to answer questions, sign copies and discuss the inspirations behind the book. A DISAPPEARING NUMBER
Experience a special biking event at Light House as a homage to the film Easy Rider. For over 40 years this iconic film has epitomised the freedom and individuality of the biking community. Made during an unsettled era of disputes, worker strikes and conformist regime, Easy Rider inspired a nation to dream and liberate themselves from the ‘establishment’. There will be live music from 12pm and a replica of the Captain America bike will be on display, followed by a screening of Easy Rider (18) at 3pm. All proceeds will go to the Air Ambulance. Lock Works will be open all day.

The Priory was a troubled housing estate in Dudley, in the West Midlands. Andrew documented the abandoned houses before the ordered demolition razed the buildings to the ground. Mostly built in the 1930s, the estate was a solution to slum clearances, but by the early 1990s houses on the estate had fallen into disrepair and the area was plagued by vandalism, drug dealing, burglary and graffiti. Dudley Council were responsible for re-homing residents which, for many, was an unwanted move, as they had spent the majority of their lives on the estate. Plans for rebuilding the estate are currently underway.
With this new body of work Jasroop explores techniques of image creation. Her final images are designed to look like contact sheets. The sheet is filled with individual images depicting a coherent series from the same scene, which when all viewed together, make up an entire image.
Fresh from it’s debut in New York, Odette’s show marks a study of geography, belief systems and the flows of nature. The significance of the phrase ‘as above, so below’ is that it is one which indigenous cultures live by: a belief that the heavens and the earth are the foundation of all creatures. Land and sky are more than just geographical icons; they are mirrors in which they see themselves reflected. The images document the vast desert landscape of Southern Australia – a traditional home of indigenous peoples – from directly above and below a single standing point, brought together as a double exposure. Odette England combines what otherwise exists separately, to explore the significance of primal ‘middle ground’ where humankind resides.

These images are much more than a typological study of the area, they provide an insight into the ideologies of residents and town planners, and raise questions about the response of councils in England to socio-economic problems.
Each photograph in the contact sheet was taken from the same spot, with the angle of the camera being adjusted slightly to record the next section. Jasroop purposefully avoided creating an exact replica of the entire scene, in order to make the viewer really look and see everyday sights with awe and wonder.

Not wanting to ruin the life of a young man he considers merely irresponsible, Cristi must either allow the arrest to be a burden on his conscience, or face censure by his serious superior for whom the word “conscience” has an entirely different meaning.
First-time helmer Edward McHenry heads up this UK war spoof using stop-motion action figures, with voices provided by a top-notch British cast led by Ewan McGregor and Rosamund Pike. Jackboots on Whitehall explores what would happen if the Battle of Britain had been won by the Germans. Timothy Spall provides the voice of Winston Churchill, while Adolf Hitler is realised by Alan Cumming, with the rest of the cast rounded out by Tom Wilkinson and Richard O’Brien.

Mussorgsky’s soulful spectacle Boris Godunov is given a new production conducted by Valery Gergiev and directed by Stephen Wadsworth. Bass René Pape will undertake the title role for the first time at the Met, leading a strong Russian cast, including Ekaterina Semenchuk, Aleksandrs Antonenko, Evgeny Nikitin and Vladimir Ognovenko in a work which captures the suffering and ambition of a nation and is also a breathtaking showcase of the Met’s formidable chorus. The libreto is based on an historical drama by Aleksandr Pushkin and Nikolai Karamzin’s History of the Russian State. For many, Boris Godunov is the greatest of all Russian operas because of its originality, drama, and characterisation, and for the powerful psychological portrayal of Tsar Boris.
