Computer vision syndrome, E Ink & LCD – what is this all about?

IT

technologies become so widely spread, that we cannot really imagine how our everyday life will look like without checking the e-mail account and recent news, sharing our emotions on twitter or Facebook and reading l the brand-new best seller simultaneously. If earlier everybody wanted to have a single device to perform maximum functions, today the world of IT always offers a device that will serve any particular challenge so people tend to purchase different devices for different purposes. A smartphone is the best tool for communication, a laptop is indispensable for work, a tablet - for multimedia content, an e-reader – for reading books. Recent research on LCD and E Ink suggests that the right usage of particular devices for different purposes can provide definite health benefits. The screens of modern tablets are based on LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology, while the screen of any high quality e-reader is based on E Ink technology and the difference is obvious as long as you compare these both devices. Continious reading on LCD can lead to the Computer Vision Syndrome.

The backlight of LCD is constantly blinking, and it causes eye strain which can lead to Computer Vision Syndrome and affect the level of visual abilities. Main symptoms of CVL are eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision and dry eyes. People who spend two or more continuous hours at LCD’s every day are at greatest risk for developing the syndrome, according to the recent medical researches. At the same time the image on E Ink screen is static and completely safe for eyes. Unlike LCD screens that glow from the inside, E Ink uses only the reflected light, as well as an ordinary sheet of paper. One can read hours without feeling tired. Therefore, e-readers are adapted for use in the open air. Unlike LCD screens E Ink will provide comfortable open air reading - in the park or on the beach. As E Ink screens do not discolor even in the bright sun, you will enjoy reading even if the sun is shining directly on the display or your e-reader. And even more - the most advanced generation of E Ink screens, Carta,

used in the new PocketBook Ultra e-reader provides even better readability and improved contrast ration. Aside from health aspects, there are some more reasons to switch from LCD to E Ink while reading your favorite books. Battery life of LCD devices lasts maximum 2 days and those of electronic e-readers with E Ink screens – for several weeks without additional charging. Due to the fact that E Ink uses energy only to change pages one can read up to 10,000 pages with one single charge. And the new E Ink Carta screens show even lower power consumption results compared to previous generations. Modern e-readers such as PocketBook Ultra are also light-weight small-scale and made in the unique design to outline its owner’s sense of style. Using the E Ink readers for convenient, safe for the eyes reading and tablets with LCD for multimedia, you will truly enjoy the advantages of modern IT technologies keeping your health on the safe side.

E Ink technology makes the sunny-day reading possible.

The image on the E Ink screen (e.g. the latest generation of e-readers such as PocketBook Ultra) is static and completely safe for eyes.

All features and functions of any e-reader serve a specific purpose – to provide the most comfortable and safe for the eyes reading. An E Ink screen is one of the most necessary conditions to ensure the most comfortable reading. It is even called paper-like as optical properties of such screens are most close to paper. The technology was created specifically to simulate the ordinary printing on paper.

COOPER’S HILL CHEESE-ROLLING, MAY 26, BROCKWORTH, UNITED KINGDOM Bored of winter’s retained routine? How about trying to chase a wheel of cheese down a 295-foot hill? Origins of this event are considered to date back about two hundred years, however, no one knows the full story or reasoning for it. Some say that is has its roots in the times of the Romans relating to pagan rituals celebrating the start of spring, others say it is fertility related, and then there are those who consider that this was just one of many other unusual competitions. Nonetheless, the competition has gained an enormous popularity during the last 20 years, gathering several thousand people every year, as well as a worldwide attention. The rules of competition are as simple as possible – entering is accessible to anyone who show up and the winner is the one who has caught the rolling-down-the-hill cheese (which, by the way, reaches up to 70 miles per hour).

This festival celebrates the coming of summer, by not only lighting fires, but also taking into consideration the ancient Celtic traditions very seriously – even if it means dancing naked. In here you will have the opportunity to learn about the role of fire, witnessing quite a large group of people who take the nature of spring festivals quite interesting – without clothing. The parade of the festival is led by the May Queen and the Green Man, who at the end light a large bonfire that symbolizes the growing power of the Sun through to midsummer.

BALISPIRIT FESTIVAL MARCH 31 – APRIL 5 UBUD, BALI, INDONESIA If all the other festivals and concerts tend to take the last of your energy (from having a good time, of course), then this festival will do just the opposite – BaliSpirit Festival holds the goal of inspiring and energizing its visitors for the long months to come. The foundation part of this festival is yoga, taught by professional teachers from all around the world. You will also be awaited by music and art classes, tours in local temples and important spiritual sites, workshops introducing to healthy lifestyle and family-tended activities, such as Balinese dancing, circus tricks and storytelling for children. And at night – music from all around the world that will uplift you in the healthiest and most positive way possible. The coffin race includes teams carrying coffins of a “corpse” (being one of the team members) rush to race each other on a snowy and icy course.

And the Mayan civilization strikes again. Equinox is considered as a significant solar date symbolizing planting and harvest times. It is held twice a year, on spring and fall, “when a play of light and shadow with the stepped terraces of the pyramid creates an appearance of a serpent undulating down its stairway to connect with the snake-head sculpture at the base of the pyramid.” And what is so significant about it, you may ask? It is considered that the ancient Maya regarded this event to be a manifestation of the feathered serpent god – Kukulcan. The festival actually is pretty much about standing and watching. However, one must remember that this time shall be considered as a significant spiritual event, marking the moment with music, yoga, meditation and, of course, dancing, whilst standing on grounds surrounded by one of the most important legends and myths of all times.

SONGKRAN, APRIL 13, CHIANG MAI, THAILAND Although the roots of this “water spraying” festival are spiritual, it has become a countrywide water fight. At the time of it, any sort of water-spray devices become weapons. The water poured at one another represents a purification ritual to wash away evil spirits in anticipation of the Thai New Year. Although the festival is held throughout the many Thailand cities, the legendary city of Chiang Mai is the epicenter of it all. All the festivities are held around the 7-centuries-old moat in the Old City. The standing water in the moat is emptied and refilled with fresh water, symbolizing a renewal. The water war takes places right here, where people soak each other from head to toes. However, it does not stop there, as during the festival you can get soaked anywhere in the city.

Creativity takes courage

Līva Jaunozola - the creative soul behind all the pretty, artistic and unique you will see on the streets of Riga. She has introduced Latvia to the worldfamous concept of Pop-up store that has not only gained a vast popularity, but also helped to promote the small, however significant Latvian artisans, designers and other producers. Līva has started up an event that no women shall miss – a clothing market Andele Mandele, gathering thousands of women, as well as men to trade their currently unnecessary closet contents, more often referred to as “hunting for pearls”. And it does not end here – Līva now owns a little café called “Rasols”, carrying the concept of Soviet Union and the food served at that time. In a relatively short time you have accomplished numerous things that have gained recognition with their colourfulness and Andele Mandele market started creativeness. Let’s as an exclusive clothing market start with “the held in Riga only. Now it has first one” – Andele expanded into a regionallyMandele market*. held event, as well as divided How did it begin, and into several exclusively-themed did You know already markets, such as Andele from the beginning Mandele KIDS, Winter, Hippie that it will grow into and Dress Editions. The development has been magnificent, therefore I have also started to develop www. andelemandele.lv homepage to provide every lady with a possibility to sell out their unnecessary clothing and accessories every day. I reckon that my accomplishments would stay unnoticed if I had started it as an idea of raw business and numbers. My projects always begin with a zest to create something new, innovative and something that I personally like. To create a new project every year – for me it is a hobby. I just cannot and will not stop! Whilst on the clothing topic – which of Latvian brands have you favoured yourself? I respect and support such brands as Amoralle, Katya

NOTE

According to Līva, the most important thing when starting a project of your own, is to make sure that you will address it not only as a job to get done, but as your own personal hobby – something you will want to accomplish for your own joy and pleasure, as a choice of a lifestyle. More critical minds may perceive it as a cliché, but Līva is a strong proof for its effectiveness. Read further and a dose of motivation is assured.

The Pop-up store in Old Riga holds two main concepts – Christmas and Summer – both offering goods made only in Latvia. The next Summer Pop-up store is planned from June until August on Kaļķu street 3.

And the very popular Pop-up stores – what themes have already been developed, and what can we await?

I created the first Pop-up store* 4 years ago, around the Christmas time. After that, Summer Pop-up store was developed, and afterwards – winter store again, and so on, and so on. The concept of our store has been changed a lot, however the location has not – it will always be located in the Old Riga, where we introduce tourists with the most recognized, tastiest Latvianproduced goods. As I consider myself as the 80/90’s child, I cherish the memories of the rich tables prepared by my grandmother – full of Rasols, speck sandwiches, pickles and coffee “Liepāja”*. And that was the festive atmosphere I wanted to implement in my café. I wanted to honour the kitchen of Soviet times, however presenting it in a modern and unusual manner. Thus, “Rasols” was born, where we serve Rasols of 3 types, and the interior varying of golden elements all around. Do You regard restaurant/ café business as risky, considering the competition in this field? What would You recognize as essential traits to possess for starting up something like that? Firstly, catering industry for me is not a business, but hobby, however – tricky enough. Because in catering industry client does not tolerate mistakes. He/she will always look for a place to sit at and have a coffee and cake - that is the simple part. HOWEVER, you have to get him/her to return, and that is where the art lays. And the client will want to return to a place where there’s tasty food, cosy

Isn’t it exhausting or stressful to balance between the Pop-up stores, Andele Mandele, café management, as well as family life? If all these projects would have appeared at one time, it would be unreal to manage them. Each of them have took their turn within a 2-year range, so it was possible for me to focus on each with a 100-percent involvement, creating a specific mechanism and launching the project. You have to know how to delegate and trust your employees. And family – there is no mechanism or routine there – – this is the part of your life that you have to be involved in with all of the heart and be ready for adventures every single day. And the most important thing – where do you gain energy and inspiration for all of this? What about specific inspiration sources You might own? My projects are the sources that inspire me. I take on one, make it work and then go to the next one. And thus my days become more colourful. And to regain some energy, it is vital for me to fly somewhere at least once in 2 months. Even just for 3 days, and then I am restarted and have gained energy sources for new adventures.

Always remember what you dreamt of in childhood and go towards the same direction.

Have you known from the beginning what will you embrace in? Have you had dreams completely different to ones indulged in now? I have read that a while ago You were working in the real estate field. Is that still going on? In the field of real estate (“Arco Real Estate” company as an agent and rent department manager) I have spent the longest stage of my life of an employee, which was 7 years. I have gained a lot of experience both in the skills of sales and working with clients, as well as have established new contacts, and secured my insight in finding the right premises. I just feel which premises will do and which not. And it is a valuable experience to know where to involve in, and what to keep out of. I have dreamt about my own café since I was a child. And now, 25 years later, my dreams and attraction to such things have come true. Considering how “fresh” and interesting your projects are, I reckon that all of this is considered not only as work, but also as hobby.

But besides that, is there anything else you love to do? That’s exactly right, all of these projects have started out as hobbies that I do for myself, emotional and visual results of my satisfaction. It is my greatest pleasure to arrange and furnish a shop or café and not run it by anyone, and afterwards to sit silently in the corner and observe the reactions of clients to the work I have done. That is something magical. If talking about other hobbies and activities – I try to spend my leisure time with the closest ones as much as possible, as well as to attend cultural arrangements, to travel. I don’t have work, I only have many colourful hobbies. How about an inspirational advice – especially for women - that would encourage to express the creativeness and courage to accomplish as much as you have already? Always remember what you dreamt of in childhood and go towards the same direction with same senses. Don’t follow trends or fashion, just your own

25

beliefs. And gain inspiration in your dreams, and that is exactly where you will gain the energy to realize them. And the most useful advice for those who want to start entrepreneurial activities in Latvia: the less you know at the beginning about the bureaucracy laws most likely to be broken, the faster you will realize your idea. Start it up at the beginning, and deal with papers afterwards, so that the zest for realizing your project does not fade away in the long queues of bureaucratic instances. And concluding with a question topical to every reader of SmartLynx magazine – do you travel a lot in the frameworks of your projects? What is your favourite means of transport? I adore travelling to foreign countries only by plane. Roadtrips are too slow for me. I like the dynamics. I often buy just a one-way ticket, because I do not always know where the specific country will take me to.

The city on the hill

BERGAMO

Bergamo, standing right on the edge of the Alps, is a city and commune in Lombardy, Italy, regarded as the administrative capital of the Province of Bergamo and holding a population over 120,000, thus being the second most visited city in Lombardy, right after Milan. Another factor that contributes to the visitation of the city – it has been listed on the World Heritage List as an important historical town of Italy.

Bergamo seems to be of the most interest to people who are keen on arts, history and culture. You can, of course, come here to lay down and catch some sun. But seeing the wonderful surroundings of the city, no soul will be left uninterested. Walking around the Rocca di Bergamo Castle, experiencing the antiqueness of Il Battistero Baptistery, or touring through Caravaggio town – none of this will stay unnoticed whilst visiting Bergamo. What sounds even more beautiful is that Bergamo has been regarded as “a tale of 2 cities”, as it is separated in two main parts – the upper city – Citta Bassa and the lower city - Citta Alta. A special cable railway – Funicolare – connects the two parts of the city, so you won’t need to tire your feet of walking.

SmartLynx | Spring 2015

T

he Upper City - Citta Alta – is regard-

ed as the busy and modern lower city. It was built in the 16th century and is surrounded by Venetian walls, as well as the amazing natural park – Parco dei Colli di Bergamo. As this part of Bergamo forms its historic centre, it is quite an expensive place to live in, properties being sold out for even 12 thousand euro per single square meter. So, what exactly seems to be worth that much? Piazza Vecchia – the very heart of the old town, portraying a combination of medieval and Renaissance architecture – the place to be for architects as well as historians. The white marble Contarini fountain, placed right in the middle of the square and guarded by marble lions, was a parting gift to Bergamo from its

administrator (Podestà) at the end of his time at the office. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore was built in the very far 12th century, possessing a historical value, as well as being an important architectural object. Over the centuries, variety of changes were made to interior of the church, including the 16th century addition of Flemish tapestries. One of the most exquisite ornaments appears to be a wooden confessional, carved by Andrea Fantioni in 1705, the object looking like an expensively carved piece of chocolate. The dome also holds frescoes by the famous Italian painter of 18th century Glovanbattista Tiepolo. The masterpiece of Lombard art - Colleoni Chapel - built between 1471 and 1475, stands out with its colorful façade,

designed by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo. Dedicated to the saints Bartholomew Mark and John the Baptist, it was built as a personal shrine for the condottiere, later – captain-general of the Republic of Venice - Bartolomeo Colleoni and his beloved daughter Medea. Citta Alta is also a host for the Archeological Civic Museum and Caffi Natural Science Museum, both housed in the Cittadella. Besides that, you would also love to visit the Botanical Garden – “Lorenzo Rota”, which is considered as a part of the

Natural museum, established in 1972. However, the garden was considered as such only after 1989, as it was previously constructed as an alpine garden.

T

he Lower City - Citta Bassa – is re-

garded as the modern centre of Bergamo. Until the 20th century, this part of the city was a mere composition of Borghi – the residential houses built along the main road, connecting Bergamo with several other cities of Lombardy. Afterwards, the city rapidly expanded, erecting such ma-

jor building as the courthouse and several administrative offices. Also, an extensive shopping district developed, commonly known as the street Via 20 Settembre. What to see in this part of Bergamo? Donizetti Theatre – this theatre, named after the great composer on the occasion of celebrations commemorating the centenary of his birth in 1897, is a romantic monument, surrounded by a pond and small garden, and is hosting such prestigious events as the Bergamo Jazz Festival, the Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli International

The building was planned in 1929 and completed in 1932, also holding a tall clock tower and the long windows that were considered as typical for the 1930s architecture. A wealthy collector and patron of the art – the Count Giacomo Carrara – left quite a generous legacy to the city at the

18th century. In 1973 he opened a gallery, the Count expressed a desire to initiate drawing and painting courses in the same place, hence the creation of school. Until 1912 the school was in the same building as the art gallery, and now it holds its own premises nearby. Until 1958, the Count’s properties were managed by a commissary, after which the Comune di Bergamo took over, constructing a new building in the neoclassical style. This newly-created museum continued its collection with purchases and donations, possessing not only paintings, but also drawings, prints, bronzes and sculptures.

O

utside the two parts of Bergamo

there is still a lot to see in the outskirts of the city, nature being the most attractive. If you are tired of city’s noise and the over-

whelming culture, try to take step outside the city and feel the nature of Italy. Valleys – Val Brembana and Val Seriana – are popular locations for ski slopes of great variety, provided with such a variable set of ski lifts. However, these valleys are not only a place-to-be in winter alone, in summer you will witness the amazement of lush vegetation in sunlight, and not to mention autumn – all the possible colours create a fairytale-like landscape. Lakes of Lombardy are something to see, as well. Ideal for water sports, boat trips and many other water activities whilst witnessing the beauty of surrounding villages. Other lakes are surrounded by a wildlife environment, thus creating a diversity in the nature of Lombardy. The Iseo Lake is of the most worth to visit, as it was listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

One man many talents

There’s nothing that he can’t do. He has chosen a lifestyle of dances, celebrations, sports, teaching and even magic. He has established his own dance school, and joined together many talented artists, including himself, to create one of the merriest celebration organizing companies – Masters.lv. Ladies and Gentleman, we introduce you to the one and only – Vadim Cherepanov – a man of all sorts.

Your stage name is Vadim the Master. How did that appear? I try to achieve remarkable results in everything that I take up. I create a rather high bar for myself. And as a result for these efforts, my friends, colleagues and family started to praise me. They said «Vadim, you’re like a master.» And that is how it started. You are not only creative, but also athletic. What came first – creativity or sport? I have tried different kinds of sports. However, everything started with board games.

SmartLynx | Spring 2015

Chess? Checkers. In my time I had been a candidate for the master of sports in the Soviet Union. With this, a serious sports career begun. After that, I tried football, basketball, table tennis, martial arts, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling. An athletic lifestyle has been favoured since childhood. And dancing? And to dances I went on highschool. In the beginning of the 1990’s. At that time, the first popularity wave of breakdancing had already quiet

down. In Latvia it has almost vanished. But we started to develop it from practically nothing. That means that you were at the very source of the breakdance appearance. You could say that. We started to obtain tapes, materials. In the Soviet Union none of this was open to access. There were no teachers as well. We learnt from each other. We copied moves from Michael Jackson, James Brown, MC Hammer. And in conclusion – organized Dance of Street school. We taught to dance hip-hop, breakdance, some acrobatic elements. It was a great opportunity for additional earnings. With the largest and strongest school in Latvia, our team – Battle Time Squad – was the strongest team of the 90’s in the Baltic States – repeated runnerups in competitions of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia. We also travelled to other Soviet Union Republics. That was the time when graffiti started?

SmartLynx | Spring 2015

Yes, that is an integral part of the hip-hop culture. We messed around. Drew on walls. At that time in our team was joined by famous Latvian graffiti artist – Kris. There are some of our oldest graffiti’s in Ķengarags area. On Channel 1 you performed in TV show “Minute of Fame”. And you drew there as well, however this time – on a platter. Yes. This approach appeared a bit later than graffiti, as a sort of continuation of it. It is called Spray-Paint. Drawing with a spraying device, but instead of a wall, there are horizontal surfaces. Let’s return to the breakdance school. Teacher skills – are they inherent or is there an academic base to that? Because to the enthusiasm for breakdance, I possessed a good fit which allowed me to apply for Sports Academy. I was studying to be a coach. I played football at that time, and actually – still do.

WHAT ELSE HAS VADIM DONE? Has studied at Riga Technical University and Latvian Sports Academy Been a champion in Moscow and Estonia Break Dance championships, as well as a 3-time champion of the Baltic States Acquired the honoured 3rd place at European Championship of Hip-Hop Has attended the International Olympic Academy in Greece 9-time Latvia Champion in Electric Boogie Has acquired a certificate of “Private Practice Educator”

And why did you choose not to develop yourself in your favourite thing, instead of also teaching others?

held in the “Railroad House” (currently, Moscow House). After that, I started to develop my own original performances.

It is interesting. It is interesting to impart knowledge to someone else. And also, whilst you teach, you learn it yourself. It makes you move, not to stand in one place.

But you didn’t stop there. You collected an amount of talented and creative people around you. Why was that?

However, dances is not your only talent. You are also famous with your performance with fire. Where does that come from? I was invited to show-ballet, which was then called My Style. Now it is called show-ballet Nebesa. It was interesting for me to try myself in a brand new style, as a new persona. And it was exactly there where I learnt to work with fire. And it was then when the performance “Lord of the Fire” arose. Performance that won on an Estonian TV competition “Golden Talents”. At that period I started the “fire swallowing” acts, as well as firing up my body. Fire does not make me fear like it used to.

Socializing. Opportunity to learn something new from something else. Thanks to that, I, for example, did magic tricks and magician activities five years ago. That is something where no limits appear. My first teacher at micro-magic was mister Fox, Sergey Stupakov (magician from the Ukraine, lives in Latvia). And at the same time, 5 years ago, I started to organize celebrations and other festive events. I did it in cooperation with artist from the Baltics of Masters.lv.

It is no wonder that such a fearless man was taken up as a stuntman. It was an interesting experience. Russian Stuntman Association invited me to participate in a public program. We created show programs in Moscow schools. And that was the first time for such serious show performances. However, I finished participating in different performances when victory in a dance and vocal performance competition of Latvia in 1995 appeared. The competition was

That is, Masters.lv cooperation begun with your contact list? You open your notebook, and there’s an artist already. Where to put them? All in Masters.lv? And why exactly you thought of it? I am a fan of it. I would like to combine people by their interests. I would love to help artists sell their knowledge, and potential clients – to find a suitable DJ, host of the event, musician, etc. So you have no framing around you? You dance breakdances – organize school. Have developed your own performance – create an area for other artists. Yes, it is too narrow for me in frames of one… genre. I would like to acquire something new, share an opinion. It is wonderful when such an amount of people, who are united by Masters.lv, can communicate and develop together. So, I will try to count the fields of your talent: dances, sport, drawing, fire shows, micro-magic, teacher, organizer, conductor of shows…what gives you the biggest satisfaction? In which of these the involvement is the heaviest? Each field is interesting enough. People give their emotions in all expressions, however – different ones. For the conductors of evenings – there are smiles, for magicians – surprises, the original genre inspires wonders… All of these are different angles from which to work with people. I love to give people celebrations and get back from their emotion range.

SmartLynx | Spring 2015

And how do you try not to forget breakdancing amongst all of this? If I understand correctly, you manage a whole school of breakdance? When a person takes up something, it is difficult to throw it away. We have now one of the largest breakdance schools in Latvia – Extreme. We continue to train the kids, and others. Sometimes kids are followed by their parents. And I advise to dance for everyone, not depending on their age. And there is nothing bad when mom or dad joins their kid in dancing, to feel young again. They will acquire an interesting experience. Now I get it, you don’t throw away what you’ve started. You develop in every field. How do you rest? I try to travel with my family, friends once or twice a year. Last summer I flew to the USA, after that – there was a trip to Turkey. I love active holiday. On boat, or bike. And even during my holidays I try to find somewhere to draw on. Or just to show magic tricks to people. To bend a spoon or fork in a restaurant - and that is not vandalism – it is just a trick. A trick after which waitresses start to fuss and bring new cutlery, asking to do the trick again. They bring knifes, ladles… As we have already started to talk about family. Who watches over? Who supports at home? My family always helps and supports morally. And not only at home. My wife always helps with project organization, such as, vocal-dancing festivals, New Year’s Celebration

“New Year’s for Friends”, children’s dance camps. We do all the projects together. Daughter also becomes a creative mind. Plays piano. It seems that she is also going to be an artist. Is there anything else you would like to realize in your life? I work on new performance routines a lot. I have many ideas. And I also have a dream. I want to find a writer-journalist who would help me to write a book. A book about my creative journey. Maybe my story will encourage young people to develop, and do what they like. It is a huge problem nowadays. Many people go to a job they don’t like, young people sit at the computers

constantly. However, for people to be happy – they just have to do their hobby so that it brings income. Make it your job, your beloved job. I have accomplished that. And it is possible that a book about it would help people to believe in themselves. Maybe even a film would be better. In conclusion, could you tell us of the most epic event, which you were participating in, or had to organize? The first thing that comes into my mind – Moscow Championship of 1999, thousands of people on the Red Square. You look as far as you can and see no end for the amount of people. We got the first place with the

team back then. And since then it cannot be forgotten, the spirit, energy, mad feeling. But for the events organized by us – Eastern Europe Championships in Breakdance “Riga Open”. At this event, the strongest dancers from all over Eastern Europe gathered. Including the ultimate champions of the world – team Top Nine (Saint Petersburg), who won almost every world-wide championship. It was the most spectacular celebration, festival of such kind in the history of Latvia. And 6 years in a row, we celebrate the New Year at one of the largest celebrations – “New Year’s with Friends”.

TENERIFE. Ahh, sound of the word itself gives you a realistic feeling of sun’s brightness, floristic colorfulness and people’s happiness. Located in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of North Africa, Tenerife will delight each of its visi tors with a bright sunshine every day. Tenerife is considered the largest and most populous of the 7 Canary Islands, therefore do take into account amounts of people you’ll see there. Happy people, nevertheless. One of the reasons for this joy is one of the world’s largest carnivals Tenerife hosts. The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is held annually, attracting thousands of people around the world and being closely similar to the famous Rio de Janeiro Carnival, thus attempting to become a World Heritage Site.

About 5 million tourists visit Tenerife each year.

The most important story is the one that tells what made the island for what it is? Time for history.

S

panish conquest

The earliest known history of Tenerife is considered to begin with the Guanche people. Being the original inhabitants of the island, their presence on it can be dated back to 200 BC. What is interesting, unlike the typical Spaniard people who are dark-haired and tan, these people were more of Scandinavian appearances. They wore clothes made from goat’s skin or woven from plant fibers. Making rough pottery, fashioned ornaments and necklaces of wood, bones and shells, Guanches lived in the mountains, their homes being natural or artificial caves.Tinerfe was one of the original monarchs of the island, therefore the name is still appearing in a lot of places even nowadays. Tinerfe had 9 children, and after his death a lot of arguments arose on how the island would be divided. Eventually, the issue was sorted by creating 9 municipalities, each of them ruled by one of the sons. Thus, municipal areas known today appeared – Taoro, Guimar, Abona, Anaga, Tegueste, Taraconte, Icode, Daute and Adeje. About 500 years ago the island, consisting of 9 municipalities, were of desired conquest for the Spanish. Initially,

they easily conquered the neighboring Canarian islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The other 5 islands put up a larger fight, however they gradually fell to the aggressors. The last one left was Tenerife, proving their bravery and courage. Unfortunately, the island was finally capitulated in 1496. With many other significant events, the rest of Tenerife’s history continued under the reign of the Spanish.

Its 24hour festivities make the place a great attraction for not only the locals, but also tourists from all over the world. And the famous nightlife of Veronica’s Strip – packed with nightclubs, cabaret bars, live music venues, shops and restaurants – comes alive every night. For calmer ones, the Golf las Americas is recommended, located in the very heart of the resort. And for the active goers, all sorts of water activities are offered, including jet-skiing, scuba diving and windsurfing, and the famous boat-rides with an opportunity to watch wales and dolphins, or an excursion on a pirate ship and yellow submarine.

THE BIZARRE 5

Weird, strange, extraordinary, peculiar…none of these terms could fully describe the constructions stated in this Top 5. You might think that just a round house looks odd, or a pink-and-green coloured residence is something unusual and worth looking at for quite a time. However, none of them could compete with these 5 weirdest-looking houses of all times. And the best thing is – they all can be easily accessed, just by setting a tour date. So grab your cameras, jump in the plane and take a long look at these odd constructions, because who knows – maybe one of these actually do become one of your dream houses!

Designed by Vlado Milunic in cooperation with Frank Gehry in 1992, this building, also known as “Fred and Ginger”, used to cause some loud controversies. The dancing house stood out from the Baroque, Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings for which Prague is so famous. However, the Czech president Václav Havel supported the idea, hoping that it would become a centre of cultural activity. Why Fred and Ginger, you might ask. The house resembles a pair of dancers, who are the legendary dancers

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Style of the building is known as deconstructivist (“new baroque” – as some designers may refer) architecture. Interior of the construction includes 2 central bodies. The first one is a glass tower, supported by curved pillars, and the second one goes parallel to the Vltava River, characterized by the mouldings that follow a wavy motion. The dancing construction includes office premises, as well as highly-maintained French restaurant, which is on the top floor of the Dancing House and happens to be the only part open to the public.

It also looks as if it’s about to collapse. Columns tilt at scary angles. Walls teeter, swerve, and collide in random curves and angles. Materials change wherever you look: brick, mirror-surface steel, brushed aluminium, brightly coloured painy, corrugated metal. Everything looks improvised, as if thrown up at the last moment. The Legend of Fabergé

Fabergé egg – one of the finest jewelled objects created by Peter Carl Fabergé and his company. With the most famous series being the “Imperial Easter Eggs”, Fabergé introduced world to the most legendary objects of art that have still been preserved with a passion and poignancy of a lost world.

About Peter Carl Fabergé The legendary artist-jeweller, and goldsmith to the Russian Imperial Court was an extraordinary artist after whom a world-known company and brand has been named. He was born in 1846 to his goldsmith father, thus inheriting the skills of

handicraft. He was educated in St. Petersburg and Dresden where he fell under the influence of the Renaissance and Baroque treasures in the famous Green Vaults. He had also travelled extensively, thus acquiring the inspiration behind his mesmerizing works of art. His exquisite jewels were always made to the smallest detail, so that everything would appear to the perfection, which could be related to a true Russian spirit at that time.

The first Fabergé egg was created for Tsar Alexander III – he wanted to give his wife, the Empress Maria Fedorovna, a special Easter egg in 1885 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their engagement. It is known as the Hen Egg, and had been crafted from gold. The egg’s shell, divided into two halves, opens to reveal the first

surprise – a matte yellow-gold yolk, which subsequently opens to reveal a multicoloured gold hen. The hen contains a gold and diamond replica of the imperial crown from which a small ruby pendant was suspended, however these 2 elements have been lost ever since. It is rumoured that inspiration for this particular piece was an

INFO:

egg owned by the Empress’s aunt – Princess Vilhelmine Marie of Denmark – which had captivated Maria’s imagination during her

Hen Egg childhood. After a great recognition of Fabergé’s first egg, Alexander appointed him a goldsmith by special appointment to the Imperial Crown, and commissioned an egg the next year as well. After Alexander III’s death, his son Nicholas II presented a Fabergé egg to both his wife and mother. Thereafter, each year an egg was produced, except for the 1904 and 1905, during the Russo-Japanese War. The Imperial eggs were of great fame, therefore Fabergé was commissioned to make similar eggs for a few private clients as well, including the Duchess of Marlborough, the Rothschild family and the Yusupovs. Fabergé has also made a series of 7 eggs for the industrialist Alexander Kelch, logically titled the “Kelch” eggs. Four of the “Kelch” eggs are currently owned by a private collector, 2 of them – by Viktor Vekselberg – a popular Ukrainian-born Russian businessman. And 1 egg has had the honour to be included in the Royal Collection in London. Since the Russian Revolution, the Fabergé trademark has been sold for several times, and a few companies have retailed eggrelated merchandise using the Fabergé name. Currently, the trademark is once again owned by Fabergé Limited, mostly making egg-themed jewellery, thus preserving the initial value of Fabergé.

- The Royal Collection in London fully owns three of the Imperial Eggs: Basket of Wild Flowers, Colonnade and Mosaic. - In 1917, during the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks seized the Fabergé workshops and their treasures, subsequently closing down all production. Consequently, Peter Carl Fabergé and his family fled from Russia. - The “Renaissance egg” is one of the few eggs made to be displayed on its side, rather than standing on one end. - Joseph Stalin thought to have made the right decision by selling many of the eggs in 1927, just to come down to a bigger prosperity. He even hired a Soviet agent in Fabergé eggs, who sold them to certain collectors.

Quite a variety of word combinations, defining the celebration of Easter, appear in the Estonian language. For example, ülestõusmispühad - meaning “the rising holiday” and marking the resurrection of Jesus; lihavõtted – meat taking – referring to the end of fasting period and start of eating the meat again; munadepühad – egg holiday – symbolizing fertility and creation, just like in any other cultures of the world; and kiigepühad – swing holiday – referring to quite an old Estonian tradition of taking a

Therefore, it is no rare occasion when Estonians, stepping their feet on such swing, try to swing to the fullest. Estonia regards Easter as not only a church celebration, but also a spring holiday, welcoming the warm weather and bright sun to wait ahead of us. Traditional meals on such tables are mostly of veal and seafood dishes, making attempt to provide as much as heavy and fatty food as possible, as a well-deserved prize after the fasting period. various brownish-colored shapes. And both Estonians and Latvians prefer it rather than painting the eggs using bright markers or special egg colors. Some even wrap the eggs with different flowers and brunches to make the decoration more unique. After the eggs have been boiled, the competition can begin – each competes with a single egg, trying to break the other. The one who breaks everyone’s egg shells – wins, claiming the loser’s egg. However, be noted that wooden eggs are not qualified for this competition!

And when the food has been enjoyed, eggs have been cracked and The Estonian Open Air Museum, considered as the largest museum in the country, annually holds an Easter and Spring Fair, inviting people to indulge in various traditional activities, such as making your own willow whistles, ride the village swings and take pleasures of traditional farm food experience. Besides that, plenty of performances, concerts, competitions and handicraft activities await for you and your family.

Easter Traditions

Then there is the most awaited Easter tradition, seriously practiced in all of the Baltic States – the egg knocking. Before it happens, the previous day is spent for decorating the eggs, mostly by boiling them in the mass consisting of dry onion skins. Such technique provides the eggs to come out beautifully ornamented with

MIX DESCRIPTION Whip the farmer cheese for 1 to 2 minutes. Add cream cheese, butter, sugar, egg yolks, salt and continue to whip until the mix is fluffy. Beat in the lemon juice, zest, vanilla, cream, raisins and nuts. Line a pot with two layers of cheesecloth. Spoon the ready Pasha mix into the pot. Fold the excess cheesecloth over the top of Pasha. Place a plate on top of it with a heavy weight. Place a second plate underneath the pot to prevent any drainage. Refrigerate for 24 to 48 hours. When serving, unwrap the cheesecloth from the top, hold a serving plate over the pot and flip it upside down. Top with whipped cream and fruit. Slice as a cake. Voilà a la Pasha!

The Ultimate Easter Must-know

We present you with a beginner’s guide to one one of the brightest, happiest and sunniest holidays – 14 Facts & Figures about Easter

The traditional act of painting eggs is actually called Pysanka, which is coming from Ukrainian verb pysaty, meaning to “write”, as the designs were not painted on but written on with beeswax. That must have taken a lot of time before the celebration could start.

The tallest chocolate Easter egg is 10.39 metres high and 7,200 kg heavy. It was made in Italy in 2011 and believed to be taller than a giraffe and heavier than an elephant. To have been there and to have eaten it…

SmartLynx | Spring 2015

The date of Passover depends on the specific phase of the moon, therefore Easter is considered a movable feast. We know, it’s confusing every single year.

The Easter Bunny dates back to the 18th century US. They were actually Easter Hares at the time, originating in Europe. Such hare was to determine whether children were good or naughty, and bringing toys, candy and eggs to the obedient children. And to those who misbehave – bad eggs. Or nothing, it’s up to parents to decide.

The significant process of giving the eggs can be traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans – to them egg was a genuine symbol of life. And these eggs were usually of red colour, thus honouring the spring.

It is rumoured that if you get up early enough on Easter morning and go for a swim in a cold stream, your rheumatism pain (if existing, of course) will be eased. However, we strongly advise to not actually try it. Instead, get an appointment.

FACTS smart Easter

63

During the 19th century Easter eggs were used as birth certificates. Many families, after greeting their offspring, were not able to get to the closest town hall to file a birth certificate. Therefore, an egg, dyed and inscribed with certain text, was accepted as a form of identification.

In terms of candy, Easter is supposed to be the second most profitable holiday in the USA, right after Halloween. An estimate of 1.9 billion US dollars are spent on candy during Easter. If only we’d have so much to spend on anything…

Most popular symbols of Easter – egg, bonfires, candles, lilies, cross, palm, bunny and even a lamb.

A fun game, dating back to medieval times, was held in churches during Easter time – the priest would throw a hard-boiled egg to one of the choir boys, after which the boy would throw it to the next one. And when the clock struck 12 – the one with an egg in hands was considered a winner and could keep it. The only question – what time did they start?

When receiving a delicious chocolate bunny, approximately 76% of people bite off ears first, while others go for the tail. Quite an interesting survey to carry out.

In Sweden, they do not have an Easter Bunny. Instead they own an Easter Wizard. A bit more fun, isn’t it?

Some communities dye not only eggs, but chicks as well, assuring that it is not dangerous to chicks’ health. It can be assured to 100%, however, we strongly suggest to leave alone the chicks!

The name Easter comes from Eostre or Eastre – an Anglo-Saxon Goddess of light and the dawn, having been honoured at various pagan festivities celebrating the arrival of spring. Nowadays Easter is celebrated no matter what the religion, because all it has become truly about – greeting the spring time at your and your family’s door!

Your modern coach

Fit Smart Watch

This season, our athletic SmartLynx stewardess Eveli will try out even more athletic Adidas Fit Smart Watch. A sophisticated athlete’s friend, kindly provided by MySport shop. Let’s see how this gadget runs.

T

o start with, I have to say that running has been love of my life only last three to four years. Though, even if I love it so much, I tend to skip trainings when it is bad weather outside or seemingly too busy day schedule. Estonian most famous sport physiologist, Kristjan Port, has said „Don’t lean on willpower, it is too weak muscle to cope with!”. This quote seems to stick me quite well also. So, what I seem to need on low willpower times is an incentive, which keeps me going without excuses. Good fitness tracker could be just one that needed. Today, I am happy to test Adidas newest fitness tracker, The Fit Smart, which brings along miCoach Train & Run app, allowing you to have all information about your workouts and training plan gathered together in one account. The Fit Smart is looking just like an usual watch, made of soft silicone material, which is easy to bend around your wrist. It’s not heavy and available in two sizes – small and large, with adjustable strap. It feels really comfortable against the skin but it’s necessary to pick right size of band, cause other way around it might be too loose and starts to annoy you. The

As Eveli has close relations with sports and has run marathons before we decided that she is a perfect match for Adidas newest fitness tracker, The Fit Smart.

device has a white LED display that’s bright and stays on during whole of your workout. It consists three buttons: a big center button to activate the device and two navigation buttons for selection options. It seems easy to use but in truth, misleads in the beginning. For example, certain terms displayed on the device require a little bit of research to understand, what exactly “FREE”, “SR” or “AW” stands for. None of this information is represented on miCoach app and I couldn’t complete my “AW” (assessment workout) without reading the instructions, which I finally found from miCoach account “Guidelines and Tutorials” section. Well, in an ironical way, for using The Fit Smart without any instructions at all, you just have to be smart. One more thing I found perhaps not so necessary according to design, is two navigation buttons – one could actually be already enough to do the work.

H

owever, Fit Smart is a perfect companion for you if you’re training for a race or just want to stay in shape. MiCoach Train & Run app helps to set a training schedule, and actually acts like a real coach during workouts. You are free to choose your own training plan. MiCoach is flexible on distance and target goals. You can either select distance for 5K, 10K, half marathon or full marathon. After setting a training plan, the app will create a training calendar that displays the days you are scheduled to work out. If wanted – reminder could be set. It really sent me an alert to phone to remind me that I have a workout to do on certain days.

SmartLynx | Spring 2015

So, there are useful features to help staying organized during low willpower periods. Still, Fit Smart is meant to be used only for workouts, it means that it doesn’t provide any feedback about other daily habits like steps and sleep.

A

fter two days testing, I decided to take a chance and seek deeper inside of Fit Smart possibilities world. You just cannot allow yourself to miss any features of Fit Smart – firstly because it probably have to earn back its price for you, and secondly, it just have so much to offer you for your own improvement. For example, during my “AW” training, device will gather information, which will be visible after synchronizing watch data via Bluetooth with miCoach app. It calibrates personal heart rate zones and pace zones. Complete workout sync data reflect breakdown of stats, including personal time, distance, average heart rate, speed, calories burned and steps per minute. The app also displays charts, showing how the speed, heart rate and stride rate varied during my workout – as well, provides mile splits. Another neat feature of Fit Smart is that after a “FREE” workout, the device calculates your “Run Score,” which is a score out of 1000 that you can use to see if you’re improving in your workouts. Though, one weak point of Fit Smart seems to be lacking of GPS – it only uses an accelerometer to track pace and distance. So, if you like to know accurate distance and map of your route, you should probably use secondary device (like smartphone).

I

n general, I assume that in longer period of time, The Fit Smart will show off with its battery longevity. To charge the device, you have to attach it to the magnetized charging cradle and connect the USB to computer or other charging hub. Adidas states that five days of use will be got from the 200mAh battery, with an hour’s training a day. Company would give proof that battery can last over a week on standby mode mixed with training sessions. Furthermore, the same important as battery life, is memory storage. Well, the device itself has memory enough to store around ten hours of workout data. It’s easy to access to recent history by navigating through the watch’s homescreen. And if you get worried about strength of this watch – there’s no need for that. It’s sweat proof and 3ATM water resistant. But, Adidas by itself doesn’t really recommend to go swimming with it on.

F

rom the view of userfriendliness, I would give it green light to consume. I really love the display without usual display – there are no glass or pixels packed into the Fit Smart, which makes it slighter and more fancy. It is available in two colors: black and pearl, which means good compromise in a classical way. Whoever might worry about pearly one getting dirty or damaged, can easily buy black instead. Testing period showed that I would be exactly this person who prefers black to pearl, cause pearl really is getting dirty. Also, design isn’t so outstanding to wear it daily bases. Though, by keeping it in visible place at home, you can raise “willpower muscle” for sure.

Adidas

A

person who has not owned an iPhone before, it would be more complicated to remember all of these combinations. There is also the light option. And what’s funny, once me and my friends tried different hand lights versus the iPhone light – and the iPhone light proved to be the brightest one.

75

T

he size of this thing actually does not bother at all. Holding it in just one hand, I can easily reach all corners with just one finger. But I do believe that iPhone 6 Plus would be less convenient. The lock button is not at the top anymore, it’s now on the right side – I reckon it is also because of the size. Otherwise, it would not be as easy to reach and push. And the earplug input is now at the bottom, instead of the top of the phone.

T

hat makes me wonder what the music sounds like. I’ll go to iTunes store and check it out. Yes, the quality of the sound seems much better, and louder as well. It seems so loud that I could even do without speakers when listening to music at home.

I

’ll look at some random applications. Oh, there is PowerPoint, Word and Excel in here. It’s official, this phone has substituted a computer. It even makes me forget the basic functions of a phone – a phone! It seems that number dial, contact search and calling functions are the same.

I

t also seems that the touchscreen function of the phone is improved. That it is kind of smarter. It seems to

perceive my touch faster and more precise. And it is nice that because of the large screen you don’t need to zoom in all the time. I’ll try entering my e-mail through browser, as there are always those small places that you have to fill in. Ok, so – everything can be overseen, no zoom option is necessary. That really makes things easier.

L

et’s see if the big-screen benefit would also work in YouTube application. Yes, you can oversee more things than usual, in several levels and layers.

V

ideo seems to be loading slow…but I believe that this is not phone’s fault. Oh, it automatically offers to show the video on the Apple TV. That’s interesting.

I

like that the new iOS automatically includes Health application – it counts your steps, distances walked and similar things. And after that, it forms a schedule and list for every day, week and month, thus showing your overall physical work done. And it also offers to link this to similar applications, so to help you form an individual training and dieting program. I also like the Pass Book application, however, it cannot be used as much in Latvia, as not many airline companies actually support it. I hope it will change in time, because that would make traveling so much easier.

L

et’s look at the wallpapers that the new phone offers. The possibilities are so much more than in the previous phones. And I love that all the wallpapers that iPhone offers are truly beautiful and of high quality, that you don’t

even feel the need to look for other pictures on the internet.

Adidas

GADGET PROVIDED BY

T

he sides of the phone seem to merge with the screen quite flawlessly, like there is no end for the display. And the main home button as well, it is not as prominent as it was on the previous models.

T

he screen width is large, and you can oversee everything easily. However, because of the size, I have my doubts when holding the phone in one hand – it is so large that I’m afraid drop it. And it seems so fragile that if I would put it in my pocket and sit – it may break. And if talking about the design – I do like the previous designs better, as they were more characteristic for Apple. The square corners and all. But now it looks like all other phones in the smartphone market. And if it would be the iPhone 6 Plus – then I think it would look a bit silly when held to the ear as a phone.

O

f course, the size has its benefits. For example, overviewing the Google Maps, or playing games (like Candy Crush), or if having something to write or create in Word, Excel or PowerPoint. Also, book reading, which becomes more and more popular with the means of technology. Such size would be harder to get along with though, if the person would not have owned a phone of that size before. Like me, for example – my current phone is thinner and smaller.

H

owever, if I was offered with this current space-grey iPhone 6 – I would take it, no doubt. The looks may differ, but the inside of it is much better.

Mercedes Benz TEST DRIVE photo by andrey skriban

This season we have cooperated with the general representative of Mercedes-Benz in Latvia – “SIA Domenikss “ – to try out the brand new Mercedes-Benz C-Class 220 Bluetec, 2.2 Diesel. See what Zigmars Vestfals – our car expert, strategic procurement and car fleet manager in Europe, as well as a genuine fan of Mercedes - has to say about the elegant, yet powerful C-Class.

T

he latest C-Class holds a new design, optics, as well as the position of Mercedes star. As this, right here, is an EXCLUSIVE LINE model (Avantgarde and AMG Line models as other options), the star is elevated, placed on the bonnet. Just as we are used to. However, the star for other lines and models is now integrated in the grills of the car. So the fans of Mercedes will have to get over it, and start getting used to this design. Which is not bad at all, just more difficult to take on right away. Direct competitors of such model would be BMW 3 series, or Audi A4 - however, I think that the upcoming model would be more of a competitor than the existing A4.

B

rand new C class This model has been transformed significantly, various details of aluminium, thus making whole car a lot (100kg) lighter. And it is not only for gas consumption purposes, but also for safety, everything has been well-thought-

out. Bonnet is longer, almost 10 centimetres more than the previous models. But I must say that it is quite common that nowadays cars seem to get longer, bigger. However, I don’t think that the passengers in the back can actually feel the difference between these 10 centimetres. The front seats are in a different form though, more comfortable, therefore, passengers in the back have more space for legs. However, if someone does complain about space and comfort, let’s be realistic – this still is a C-Class. If you do want an endless comfort and space, you have to purchase S-Class, or at least E-Class. Of course, the pricing will differ immediately, but that’s what comfort takes. When taking a seat, we can see and feel the high quality materials that the interior has been finished with. No signs of cheapness whatsoever. You can feel that manufacturers have thought a lot about the owner of C-Class – he/she is worth of having a joy in luxury as well. I say it

ENGINES This model has a 2.2L diesel engine with a well-known Common Rail technology. The torque of 400Nm and 170 HP is quite impressive for such a small engine. There are also high-powered AMG models to be launched, complete with a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine developing around 450 horsepower.

considering that a while ago the C-Class was regarded as a cheaper model of Mercedes-Benz. But now you can say that it is a smaller copy of S-Class. If we look on all the functions and options, then we really experience the benefits of S-Class, because almost all of such are available in this model. Except the Night Vision System. The AIRMATIC air suspension system is available as well, which was not an option for the previous C-Class model. LED lights integrated both back and front, and adaptive break lights are also integrated, along with many other

diesel-run models will now have to comply with the EURO 6 emission standard. It also gives us more savings in annual taxes, therefore the times when we drove 6.0 engines are now over. Gas prices and tax politics eventually have changed a lot in the industry, as well as in trends and habits people indulge in. The colour, as for any Mercedes, is available in quite a variety – silver, black, white, and this one – Citrine Brown– seems quite extraordinary. The weather today is quite nasty, so we have driven through dirty roads, and I must say – no dirt seems to be

visible on this colour. On a black Mercedes it would be very visible, but this colour is somewhat successful, similar to silver. As I’ve laughed about it – I have a Mercedes in a colour of a silver bucket, however there is a huge difference if you wash it once in a week, or every second day. Let’s see what the trunk is like. No spare wheel, however a compressor is included. The trunk seems spacious enough, a bit bigger than in the previous models. I like these little compartments on sides sepa-

P

erks of being good-looking I can honestly say that the exterior has been well-thoughtout. It really does remind me of a small S-Class, and there’s nothing much to add to it. Let’s see the back of the car. Lamps completely differ from the previous model, again – reminding of S-Class. BlueTEC included as well, as all

rated by nets – it has finally been thought out - when you have some smaller things to put in, for example glass bottles, they don’t roll around the whole trunk. You can also bend down the middle chair for skis or equipment of similar sort. Actually, you can bend down all of the back chairs which is quite practical.

nside story When taking a seat, we can see quite a large screen - COMAND Online High-resolution display with TFT technology – with an option to connect with your mobile data plan as well. Such process seems simple enough. As I understood, this screen is the largest available, and is not removable. If it’s removed, there will be no use in it anymore. You can surf the internet, as well as a variety of specialized apps. However, it does not allow you to do such things while driving. Which in my opinion is very acceptable. Driver’s attention shouldn’t be taken by gadgets whilst driving. The screen also provides a manual, which is useful and more manageable than the printed books. The new Touchpad just over the controller button is quite an interesting option in here, which you won’t find in any other competitor cars. Many friends of mine say that the IDrive system of BMW is more intuitive and successful, but I will not agree. I think that this one is simple enough, you do not have to know a lot of IT to get acquainted with it. When you just put your whole hand on the touchpad, nothing happens as it understands that you are not trying to launch any functions. Let’s hear what the sound is like – seems good, of high quality, offering a set of variations. There are other changes in saloon as well, the middle console is much bigger and wider, with all the nice chrome diffusers. The

interior of Classic Mercedes-Benz cars combined with new elements, which results in a nice-looking interior of high quality. All buttons, details are qualitative, especially this small watch in the middle looking like an elegant wrist watch (please ask the dealer for this option, when buying a C Class). It is difficult to say what lacks in this car. It is pleasant to sit in here, it’s comfortable, and I don’t know what’s it like at the back, but in front the space is more than enough. Heated seats which in our region is more than necessary. And something new- here in the glove compartment you can put a rechargeable scent bottle– special perfume for a specific smell of the car. However, I love the genuine Mercedes-Benz smell, but this is just an additional option. Something to definitely try out.

vercoming the competition Of course, you have to understand that C-Class adds up a bit more expensive than its direct competitors. If we take the model with a standard basic equipment, C180 model, its initial price would amount starting from EUR 33/34 000– at least in Germany. And A4 and BMW starts the pricing from EUR 29 000. But I will repeat myself, the money spent would be worth it, because the quality, feeling you get when driving the “small S-Class” – it really is worth it. Yes, it is possible that you will notice a lot of reviews saying that BMW is easier to control, a bit better and more sports-like. But we all know that Mercedes thinks about comfort, and the steering wheel system in this model works well enough. For me, I don’t need it to

be even more precise. The car listens to you right away, it’s responsive enough. Therefore, the few thousand euro in addition are reasonable in this case. What else is really important about this model – the drag coefficient is really low, if not mistaken – 0.24. If comparing to BMW and Audi, it is at least 1 star ahead of these competitors for now. Such coefficient is closely related to the everyday gas consumption. As a genuine fan of Mercedes, I have to get used to the rear design, as well as the previously mentioned star position. It seems a bit different than usual, but it’s the question of time. And I can truly affirm that every fan of Mercedes, just like me, will not be disappointed in this model. It really is worth the slight expensiveness, as no elements of quality have been spared.

The Winners of ISPY* ISPY - International Sales Person of the Year

Yes, we can! SmartLynx team participated 2nd time in ISPY contest and for the first time we won medals! SmartLynx representatives in ISPY 2015 (International Sales Person of the Year) were Senior Cabin Crew member Diāna Jakadela, Cabin crew member from SmartLynx Tallinn base Eveli Pettai, and Riga Cabin Crew members Jānis Ielītis and Dace Straupmane. Among 100 contestants from 33 airlines (like Air France, WizzAir, Finnair, Cathay Pacific, EasyJet and others) Diāna and Dace won golden medals in category Emotionally Intelligent Teamwork– Team Award. We are extremely happy for such a high international appreciation and proud to work in one airline together with such brilliant colleagues!

I

SPY Contestant Diary Diary of Cabin Crew members Dace Straupmane, who was one of 4 SmartLynx Crew members who won internal competition and was SmartLynx Airlines representative in this most famous and international Cabin Crew members contest.

Before preparation Facing the great unknown We had a lot of challenging tasks before heading to Brighton. Our team had to do pre-event online sales training, from where we got a lot of knowledge starting from how to create and deliver the perfect sales announcement to product merchandising and emotional intelligence; we also had to fill a Service Style questionnaire to find out what service style we each have. Besides that we had to come up with an idea of a product for the Dragons Den task. Overall, only 10 products were chosen, and we were super excited to find out that our product was one of them. We had to create a service announcement and, of course, study ISPY In-flight retail brochure with all the products to prepare for product knowledge test and practical tasks ahead of us. Day one - Hello ISPY!

SmartLynx | Spring 2015

In the morning we arrived at the wonderful Grand Brighton Hotel, already excited and wondering what was expecting us; we already had the feeling that this will be the most exciting week in our lives. We barely got to unpack and have a quick bite after the long trip, and then there they were - all the hundreds of products from ISPY brochure that we had been studying months before this event - waiting for us to try them in the grand expo. This was also a great opportunity to meet our ISPY buddies- cabin crews from all around the world and ISPY winners from previous years, who encouraged us a lot. After testing and trying out the products from ISPY menu we had a cocktail and popcorn party, our heads were already spinning from meeting so many

cabin crews, their managers, sponsors and ISPY organisers’ team. Such a fun night, we could have chatted and spent time with all of them till early morning, but it was time to say goodnight, we all had to be fresh and full of energy the next day. Day two - The Uniform show-off-day Throughout the day all cabin crews wore their uniforms, and it was magnificent to see so many cabin crews from so many airlines in their uniforms. It was like a fashion show of uniforms, so colourful and bright - exotic Kenya Airways, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Air Mauritius, classy Air France, Air Canada, glamorous Virgin Atlantic, Garuda Indonesia and many more cabin crews, all smiling and full of excitement. We had

professional pictures taken of us, individually, in team and all together, 37 airlines attending, represented by almost 100 of their bestselling cabin crews. After feeling like celebrities posing for photographers, we had our first ISPY crew training. I really admire how in ISPY they made training fun and entertaining. We were divided in few teams, each team had a country to represent, our team got South Africa, and the task was to find a solution for keeping our people in our country, a way to increase population and to strengthen it after it was destroyed by a big disaster. This task was assessed based on team communication; self-management, relationship management, handling conflict, ability to raise the energy and many more aspects. To be honest, it was quite a challenging task, taking into account all the different nationalities our team had; Italians, Chinese, Americans, Turkish and us, Latvians and Estonians. Luckily, after a lot of arguing and laughing we managed to fulfil this task perfectly. After a bright day filled with fun and colourful impressions we had an amazing dinner party with excellent food and lots of dancing. Day three - Test fever Day started with the product knowledge test. Well, that wasn’t as easy as we had thought, there were some very complex questions, not to mention the time pressure. Yet, I believe we did our best. The next challenge was to deal with stage fright as it was time to present our unique product ‘’Relaxsphere’’ for Dragons Dens judges, which, in fact, were real investors.

*

Our presentation went super smooth, and everyone loved it, all the applauses and cheerful comments were like music to our ears. We were extremely proud of ourselves. Finally we were able to have some fun, and in the evening we were entertained by our attractive crew representatives in ISPY’s Got Talent show with lot of dancing, singing and comedy. It was a truly enjoyable evening, with great food, a wide choice of attractions and lots of fun. Day four – The Big Day coming soon Day started with Airline of the year presentations, where Aer Lingus, Air Asia X, Hong Kong Airlines and Wizz Air presented their improvements in inflight retail on board and how they motivate their cabin crew for sales. Then there was the trade-show, with all the retail on board companies, presenting their best products, it was very interesting to talk in person with so many representatives and also to taste, try and test many of the products. We also got to vote for the best trade show product. Our favourite was ‘’The Little Coffee Bag‘’ coffee; we personally hope to see their delicious coffee in our in-flight menu soon. After the trade show there was the last big task for our team, the practical assessment. We had to merchandise our service trolley, according to our chosen destination and we had to read our previously prepared announcement in a room full of judges, they were watching our every move, writing things down, taking pictures and recording our delivery of the an-

The ISPY story began in 1999 when twenty eight crew representing fourteen airlines, came to London for two days to compete for the title of Inflight Sales Person of the Year. Today there are following nominations

nouncement, so you can imagine the pressure. Also, there were passengers, people seated in a mock-up aircraft, and within 12 minutes we had to sell them products, showing to the judges our ability to work in team, product knowledge and all the sales techniques we knew. In the evening the ISPY’s organising team had put together a Chill & Thrill evening; a truly well-deserved relaxing evening. It was super casual, with lots of activities, like rodeo bull riding, where our Janis set an actual record, surfing, limbo dance and many more. In addition, there was a secret celebrity - David Beckham’s only officially recognised look-alike; our hearts melted.

Day five - The gold winners are..... The start of this important day was really easy and enjoyable; we had a perfume challenge from Coty, we had to guess by smell witch perfume it was, it was lot of fun, trying to not get lost in this wonderful world of perfumery. Later this day we had rehearsal for the award ceremony, we got called out on stage to collect our diplomas, and who knew that we will step on stage few hours later to held in our hands an actual award. This year ISPY went high-tech, throughout the week each team had a tablet with our product knowledge guide, our calendar and our ISPY page where we could upload our photos and collective, which was so cool! On the tablet we also had to vote for many nominations. After a little beauty sleep we started getting ready for ISPY Gala Award ceremony. Lipsticks, fake lashes, bow ties, tuxedos, sparkling dresses....wow, each one of us looked like a movie star on the red carpet, so glamorous and elegant. Day six – the hard goodbyes I woke up, and looked at the shiny gold medal. Yes, it happened, we did it, and it was not a dream! And then a bit sad feeling sneaked up - last day, really? Is this amazing journey over? Packing bags, saying goodbyes to the new friends we made throughout these intense days. It is once in a lifetime opportunity indeed, such an inspiring event. We for sure gained a lot of knowledge and positive energy. We will never forget it. Arriving in Riga airport, our amazing support team were there with posters and flowers welcoming us back home. What an amazing heart-touching surprise you made for us. Thank you SmartLynx for believing in us and giving us the courage and strength to show the world that we can be one of the best!
