SHORTLY ON TUNISIA
The wonder that is Tunisia is located in Northwest Africa, surrounded by the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains, northern borders of the Sahara desert, and stretching right along Mediterranean Sea coastline. Main foundations for Tunisian culture are the periods of Ottoman and French rules, which would partly explain the rich mix of Arab souks and mosques with modern-style office buildings in the capital Tunis. Nevertheless, Tunisia has also witnessed waves of many other cultures by the Jew, Roman, Vandal and even Spanish settlers.
ANCIENT SETTLING
It is rumoured in a legend that Dido, a princess of Tyre, was the very first outsider to settle in the native Tunisian tribes, as she founded the city of Carthage in the 9th century. Although the city developed into quite a strong and prominent location, it was still fought in wars and won over by Rome in the 2nd century. In the 7th century came the Arab conquerors who managed to convert the natives, called Berbers, to Islam. All of the area was ruled by a string of dynasties right up until the 19th century, when the French colonial rule took over. Tunisia gained its independence only quite recently – in 1956.
14
FOUR-PARTED
It is usually considered that the territory of Tunisia is divided into 4 regions because of its natural diversity. There is the north region, the semiarid central region, eastcentral coastal region and the desert south region. The central and southern regions are mainly inhabited by native people who prefer to live by a seminomadic approach to life. However the north and east parts of the country are inhabited by quite a mix and density of population. Moreover, Tunisian city populations have expanded quite rapidly since the beginning of this century, and it is calculated that at least two thirds of Tunisians live in the cities. And Tunis alone accommodates for almost one tenth of Tunisia’s population.
ARTS AND CRAFTS
When talking about the art of painting, it is considered that the birth of it is strongly connected to the School of Tunis which was founded in 1949 by a group of talented artists from Tunisia, bringing together French, Muslims, Christians and Jews. The literature part of Tunisian culture is usually divided into two main categories – Arabic and French. Arabic literature roots in the 7th century, however the French literature was introduced only around the 19th century. In terms of music, Tunisia experienced activity in the beginning of the 20th century with liturgical repertoire that was associated with some religious brotherhoods. | Summer 2018

TUNIS
Medina is considered as a national treasure, full of ancient streets and alleys where one will meet and greet the very essence of Tunisia. Along with the many markets and cafes, historic palaces and mosques have also made their way into the Medina of Tunis. Bardo Museum is a must-see for everyone, as this is considered the very best museum of the whole country. It will provide quite a detailed and intriguing view into the ancient North African life, all the while introducing the visitors to a magnificent traditional interiors of the buildings. Carthage is located just northeast of Tunis, opening up a view to a city that once was. The ruins of this once powerful city are scattered across quite a large area, yet still including such elements as Roman baths, basilicas and a few houses. 16
DJERBA MAHDIA
Although quite small in size, the Musée de Mahdia is considered as quite an excellent destination for any tourist, providing such treats as expansive mosaics, 3rd-century marble statues and even ancient oil lamps. For the ones that are getting too tired of the architectural, cultural and historical aspect of Tunisia, try a bit of relaxing at the beautiful Mahdia Main Beach. Skifa El Kahla is a massive gate that is the sole survivor of the city of Fatimid, providing an imaginative look into what the city once was and what it could have been.
El Ghriba is considered the most significant synagogue on the island of Djerba, just as well the oldest in whole North Africa. Although being blank from the outside, the interior of the building glows in blue tiles and dark wooden furniture. For a more modern look on the city, as well as country itself, try visiting the Museum of Popular Arts & Traditions, getting a look at collections of traditional and modern pottery, jewellery and even clothing. Explorer types are offered a fantastic experience in Cave d’Ali Berbere – a cave that is supported by stone arches that date back to the Roman times. | Summer 2018

Oh, what a time for Baltic residents to live in. 2018 marks an important milestone for Latvian and Estonian citizens, as after non-imaginable difficulties, challenges and years of suffering, the two countries have managed to finally celebrate the long-awaited Centennials. The whole year of 2018 is full of events, performances and other activities celebrating the different aspects of countries stepping over the 100-year line, and as any other celebration of such kind should have – one major highlight of the celebration. What does it mean to Estonians and Latvians, and more importantly – how did the road to 100 years of existence came to be? Read up and find out!

History of Estonia through Periods
Ancient Settlers It was right after the end of European Ice Age when the first Estonians settled along the Baltic Coast, some time in 9000 B.C. Until 800 A.D. Estonians managed to form traditional villages and certain societies, many of which are still inhabited nowadays. One of the most interesting developments in these Estonian societies was the tradition of folk songs, hence Estonians owning one of the biggest collections of folk songs in the world. This cultural phenomenon can still be grasped on the island of Kihnu and the Setu border region of Estonia. And just like for many neighbouring tribes and developing nations, Estonian people praised nature and 20

History of Latvia through Periods
Early Settlers It is believed that the earliest people settling in Latvia were hunters and gatherers, arriving right after the last known Ice Age in Europe. However, the true ancestors of Latvians were the Baltic tribes who resided in the territory around 2000 B.C. The 12th century saw the end of Latvian pagans, as during the time the takeover of Christianity developed. This is what Latvians now know as the Crusade Wars, where German crusaders arrived to the territory to convert Latvian pagans to Christianity by force. After that, the German crusaders were commanded by the Bishop Albert Buxhoevedn to sail into the Gulf of Riga, landing and settling on the site of Riga and establishing it as the | Summer 2018

its elements as the main fundaments of Estonian ideology, religion, way of living and many others. Vikings Somewhere between 800 and 1200 A.D. was the period when the calm Estonian settlers were raided by the Baltic Vikings. Therefore the inhabitants of Estonia’s largest island known as Saaremaa formed quite a massive naval force for themselves, largely popular by quite daredevil’s moves – Estonians kidnapped the Norwegian Queen Astrid and her son and future King. Then, at the beginning of 12th century they also moved on to destroy the then-capital of Sweden – Sigtuna. From these and other raids Saaremaa is rich of Estonian Viking treasures even nowadays. Medieval Times After the harsh Viking era, Estonians were rapidly taken over by Christian crowds and subsequently converted to Christianity. It was also the time when Germans gained huge influence over Estonians for the next 700 years, and the territory known as Estonia and Latvia became the Medieval Livonia. At the very same time, Estonia’s main towns Tallinn, Tartu, Pärnu and Viljandi were official members of the Hanseatic League – a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and their market towns, dominating the Baltic maritime trade along Northern Europe. Soon after, the country and its thriving economy was noted by neighbouring kingdoms which strived to expand their geographic borders. Thus, Estonia became to be governed by the king of Denmark, Sweden and the Russian tsar. Modern Times Since 1918, the Republic of Estonia has been an independent state, yet such status was interrupted by the Soviet occupation and the World War II, lasting for half a century. After that, Estonia restored its independence in 1991.
The Story of Independence
Estonians got their chance to exact their right to self-determination and establish a state of their own on February 24, 1918. On February 19, 1918 the Council of Elders of the Provincial Assembly formed the Estonian Salvation Committee which in turn drafted the “Manifesto to the Peoples of Estonia” declaring Estonia an independent republic. German troops reached Tallinn the following day, and it was only when The World War I ended that Estonia was relieved of the German occupation. It was only on April 23, 1919 when the birth of the Riigikogu, Estonia’s Parliament was witnessed. The final armistice of the War of Independence, which started on November 28, 1918, took effect on January 3, 1920, and on February 2, the Tartu Peace Treaty was signed. After the conclusion of this treaty, Estonia had become a full-fledged state, recognized de jure by the international community as well. 22
Capital of Latvia. The German-formed Brotherhood of the Sword now called the whole Baltic Region as Livonia, thus also making Germans as the feudal ruling class in Latvia. Invasions In 1588 Latvia suffered quite a disaster when the powerful Russia was on its way to find an access to the sea, therefore invading Latvia. It created the Livonian Wars which lasted until 1583. During the very same time, Poles managed to invade Latvia from the South regions, conquering Latgale region and ruling the area until the late 18th century. And if that was not enough, in 1621 the Swedes conquered Riga and Northeast Latvia, holding the region until they fought the Great Northern War against Russia in (1700 – 1721). The Russians managed to re-capture Riga in 1710 and all Swedish territory in Latvia came under Russian control. At the end of the 18th century Russia, Prussia and Austria divided up Poland between them and as a result the Polish owned parts of Latvia came under Russian control. From then on all of Latvia was ruled by Russia. Starting from the 19th Century During 19th century nationalism among Latvians revived, and waves of demonstrations of Latvian nationalists started to make their way all over Latvia and Russia. As 1918 witnessed the collapse of Russia, Latvia was taken over by Germans. And that was the time when Latvians saw the opportunity for independence and managed the Germans to surrender themselves in November, 1918. However, the German troops were still left in Latvia and Communist Russians had no intention to leave Latvia as well, so Russians held parts of southeastern Latvia. When in 1939 the Nazis and Communists agreed to divide Eastern Europe between them, Latvia was assigned to the Soviet Union. Yet World War II followed when Germans managed to regain the control of Latvia, only to lose it after Germany being defeated in the War. Many tragic events happened during this time, but in August 1991, the Communist tyranny in the country collapsed and Latvia was finally recognized for its independence yet again.
The Story of Independence
In March 1917 a conference was held where it was first officially manifested that Latvia, same as other nations, owns the right of selfdetermination. In November of the same year and official document was issued, declaring that Latvia is an autonomous nation =. And a year later – on November 18, 1918 – the Republic of Latvia was proclaimed. However not the Soviet Union nor Germany agreed to the decision, therefore our ancestors fought for our country for almost 2 years. It was the first time when our country was protected by a newly-established Latvian army. The road to a worldly-recognized independence was long and hard, yet we made it. And now, on November 18, 2018, Latvians are proud to be celebrating the centenary of the Republic of Latvia. | Summer 2018

The development of Porto Montenegro has created a brand new vibrant community of the city of Tivat where everyone now strive to spend their time at. And it is not only the amenities that draw people, especially tourists, to this location. It is the fact that it lies on a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Bay of Kotor, the largest natural harbour in the Eastern Mediterranean. “Yachts are getting bigger and bigger and people are complaining that they can’t find proper berths for them. That’s no problem in Tivat. It used to cater to warships.” Peter Munk, Chief Investor, Porto Montenegro. 25

Have a Summer Party at Lastva
Right near Tivat there is a place called Gornja Lastva where festivities of Lastva are organized each summer, usually in the first Saturday of August. Full of diverse cultural and artistic programs, this celebration gathers both locals and tourists to introduce them to such traditional folk dances as Lastva and Skaljari, as well as songs performed in a traditional way of singing, called the songs of clappers. Other than that, art exhibitions and manifestations by Tivat artists are also offered for enjoyment. 26
Relax in the Summer House Buca
This special summer house dates back to the 17th century when it belonged to a once-famous Kotor noble family named Buca. They created a spectacular complex of 5 facilities – residential house, economy house, church, chapel and entrance porch. What was then just a casual cottage house is now a restored gallery with space for summer concerts, art exhibitions and other cultural events. And top it all off, the original architecture of white stone finish has been preserved to emphasize the building’s historical value.
Also known as the Town Park or the Green Oasis, this park was initially developed on the grounds of the famous Tivat noble families – Radali and Lukovic. The park is supposed to own the biggest botanical garden in the South Adriatic region, and is better known as the Navy Park. The story tells that in 1982, the War Navy of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy – Admiral von Sternek – decided to cultivate the former military shipbuilding surroundings with flowers, so he ordered all the captains of the Austro-Hungarian navy to bring all possible specimens of plants from their travels. And now we have a chance to see what exotics herbs and plants were brought during the 19th century, by having a stroll down the park. | Summer 2018

THE ALL ENGLAND LAWN TENNIS AND CROQUET CLUB
The Beginning
The beginnings of Wimbledon were signed off with just 22 players who introduced the Gentlemen’s Singles at the very first tournament, and spectators paid a now-hilarious entrance fee of one shilling to watch the final match. The first Championship was won by Spencer Gore who was an old Harrovian rackets player.
Spencer Gore Continuing the championship’s development, a lot of new aspects were introduced. One of the most significant was introducing Ladies’ Singles along with Gentlemen’s Doubles competitions in 1884, thus opening a path to female athletes to shine. In the new Ladies Singles the total of 13 participants played, and Maud Watson became the very first female champion of Wimbledon games. Considering the growing popularity of the newly-introduced tennis championship, the All England Croquet Club changed its name to the All England Tennis & Croquet Club in 1899. 30
May Sutton 1905 not only saw its very first international Ladies’ Singles champion – May Sutton, but also drew a record time at the Wimbledon Men’s Doubles, the title of the champions of which received brothers Laurie and Reggie Doherty, both born right there in Wimbledon. And the very first international champion of Men’s Singles was witnessed in 1907 – Australian player Norman Brookes. In 1913 – the list of competitions grew with Ladies’ Doubles and Mixed Doubles. In 1920 building works on the new Wimbledon Championships location site in Church Road were started, and two years later the Club moved to the present site, with the capacity of 14 000 people. Just like so many traditional events throughout the world, Wimbledon also had the unfortunate luck to be put on hold because of the World War II. It was in 1946 when the Championships re-opened for further tennis games. It was only in 1967 when Wimbledon made its way to the colour television, first broadcasted on BBC network. And ten years forward, the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum was opened to the public, thus increasing the potential audience of the championship even furthermore.

Wimbledon Fashion
During the 19th century, the commonly accepted dress-code for the players was a plain white long-sleeved shirt and trousers for men, and a full-length corseted with dress and a hat for women. It was only around the 1920’s when fresh innovations in clothing were introduced, especially for women. Such as shorter skirts, shorts and even sleeveless tops were some of the new design solutions that made their way into the competition, creating a whole different ease of movement during the matches, and showing off more of individual personalities amongst the players.
32
Traditions
• The obligatory strawberries and cream are considered as the main food source for each Wimbledon tournament. • The traditional colours of Wimbledon are dark green and purple, yet all tennis players are required to wear all-white clothing. • Earlier players were obliged to bow or curtsy for any members of the royal family, seated in the specially-devoted Royal Box. However, 2003 saw the changes to that, now only requiring the players to bow or curtsy only if His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales or Her Majesty the Queen is present at the games. • Since 2009, all Men and Women competitions are referred to as “Gentlemen’s” and “Ladies”. • Ball boys and ball girls are now chosen from schools in the London boroughs of Merton, Sutton, Kingston, Wandsworth and Surrey. Prior to this, the schools from which the children were drawn from were only limited to the Shaftesbury Children’s Home.
Prizes
For the first 5 years of the competition winners were presented with the traditional Wimbledon trophies, after which the All England Club decided to change up the trophy game – future trophies were no longer becoming the property of the champions, instead granting the winners with replicas of the trophy whilst the originals were located in the Wimbledon Museum. And it was not until 1968 when the trophies were supplemented with prize money as well. Moreover, it was only in 2007 when an equal amount of prize money was awarded to both male and female champions. Champions of the Men’s Singles receive trophies in form of a silver gilt cup that is engraved with “The All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Champion of the World” and additionally – inscribed with the name of the winner, starting from the very beginning of the year 1877. However, in 2009 there was no more room for further winners to be inscribed in, so an addition of a black plinth garnished with a silver band was made to make room for the names of future champions. In turn, women champions of the Ladies’ Singles receive a sterling silver salver, also recognized as the “Rosewater Dish”, first introduced in 1886. And for each of the Doubles’ tournaments a silver challenge cup is handed to the winners.

Of the 4 major annual tennis tournaments known as the ‘Grand Slams’, Wimbledon is the only one to still be played on grass, which is where the name lawn tennis originated. The past winner with most titles from Wimbledon and the Wimbledon Tennis Champion with 9 titles from ladies Single is Martina Navratilova. Wiliam Renshaw and Pete Sampras are Wimbledon’s past winners for the most men’s singles titles with 7 titles each.

Though properly called “The Championships,

Wimbledon was contested by top-ranked amateur players, professional players were prohibited from participating. This changed with the advent of the open era in 1968.

Dynamic Riding
Visual Impressions
The look of this motorcycle really is impressive, an obvious BMW design in the best way possible. What I like about this design that with just few elements, the look of it can be changed. For example, the bag on the back of the vehicle makes it look a bit less aggressive, but as soon as you take it off – the look turns to a bolder, more fearless appearance. And the so called “Angel Eyes”, quite, a typical feature for BMW vehicles, preserves a certain elegance and smoothness to the ride. Just as the rear stop lights – I must say that those have been designed pretty beautiful. When riding the Bagger through the city, I couldn’t help but to notice the looks from people. This model is quite new and not so popular in Europe yet, so it is no wonder that people tend to stop and turn their heads to the direction this ride is going. It really is a sight for the eyes. 52
When stepping onto it, you will feel relaxed and safe, especially because of its dimensions. And the best feeling of all – after just about 5 minutes of riding you feel as if you have driven the vehicle for a long time already. There are absolutely no problems when braking rapidly before the potholes and even if by accident you do wind up in one – it is hardly noticeable with this ride. And the acceleration even does not need to be mentioned – just a few seconds and you are ready for the big roads. I would also like to note that the dynamics of the vehicle do not change a lot when riding it solo or with a passenger, which sometimes might be troubling with other similar vehicles. As any modern motorcycle would, this BMW also provides 3 riding modes – Rain, Road and Dynamic. Though when riding in the city, I did not use them as much as when riding onto a highway – then the mode switching gets interesting! This motorcycle is essentially great for long highway trips, just as well for our roads in the city. | Summer 2018

In words of the Creators
Game of Electronics
Comfort Comes First
A very important role in a good motorcycle is played by seats – and not only the driver’s, but also the rear passenger’s seats. And as we tried it out, both of them are extremely comfortable and the backrest seems to fit perfectly. And the heated seats and grips are just like a cherry on top of an ice-cream. The front windshield is excellently positioned to protect the driver from wind, bugs, anything really. What I must note is the fact that it can adjusted. If going on highways, the windshield can be lifted up for a more comfortable and safer ride. And when riding in the city, it can be lowered even as much as almost unnoticed. So it does not bother the driver in any way. 54
There are many electronic features to play with, music is loud enough to hear it even on faster speeds, seats and handles. The control panel is easy to understand, accessible and overall – everything that a car would have is also built in this ride as well. The display has the standard ride mode, gear indicator, coolant temperature, fuel level etc. One thing that I especially appreciate in motorcycles is cruise control, necessary on longer trips. And to drop some more names into this game, the ride includes Bluetooth Interface Control, Central Locking System, Gearshift Assist Pro, Keyless ride and many more functions to choose from when putting together your own BMW K 1600. The switches and buttons on the bars are something to get used of eventually. There are 11 switches on the left and 3 on the right handlebar. The audio system may be controlled with the buttons on the left fairing. So before getting on longer drives, I might suggest a quick tutorial on how to operate all of these switches.
“This bagger is made for gliding along. Brimming with presence, the sloping line of the silhouette makes the K 1600 B low and streamlined. The Black Storm Metallic colour, combined with the various black tones, gives the Bagger its shape and makes it appear imposing and confident at the same time. The chopped windscreen and the striking rear section with LED indicators and brake lights integrated into the cases define the style. The black 6-cylinder completes the strong character and overall image. And with the standard tubular handlebars, the Bagger can be easily steered towards the horizon. The standard dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) provides optimum handling and riding dynamics. In addition, the “CRUISE” setting ensures soft damping comfort. The optional floorboards offer a relaxed foot-forward riding position. With additional options like the audio system with Satellite Radio and Bluetooth, Hill Start Control (HSC), Shift Assist Pro, Central Locking/Alarm, and additional storage compartments, you can improve your riding experience in a fully customized way. With a relaxed posture and an unmistakable presence, you are guaranteed to draw looks from your fellow riders.” | Summer 2018

SAFE TRAVELS!
No one really wants to think about unfortunate situations during holidays, just focusing on the culture and experiences the vacation will offer. But be advised to check off just a few of preventative measures when leaving for a travel will pay off. We do not say that something might happen, but if it does – it is so much better to be prepared and well to come to the best and fastest solution possible when it comes to your health. Words by Liene Eglīte Photos from Depositphotos
Hiking and simple walking is the best way to keep the energy flowing. Try not to use public transportation as much and go by foot through the cities you are exploring – thus you will see so much more than from a window of a bus. And imagine how many souvenir shops you will be able to visit. 60
Routine exercises should be worked out before any trip. There is usually a lot of walking when traveling abroad, including airports, so make sure to spend at least 10 minutes on some light stretching every night before bed. Your muscles will thank you!
Sleep is for everyone, even vacationers! As much as you want to enjoy every possible moment of your vacation, do not make the mistake of thinking that sleep is not important. It is, especially when planning long walking and exploring days ahead. | Summer 2018
CARING FOR THE QUALITY OF LIFE
Key to hydration is only water. This does not just go for the southern vacations in the sun. Hydration is the key in any season, and do not think that the juices and lemonades you have consumed will somehow replace simple clean water.
Do not stress on following certain plans or schedules. Vacation is all about relaxing and trying to enjoy the days off, instead of starting to worry about such trivial things as being late to a tour bus or the restaurant being out of your favourite pasta dish.

Although freshly-squeezed juice can be accessed at any time of the year, it has been widely observed that summer is the peak of the season when it comes to people choosing fresh juice instead of other forms of beverages, such as lemonades, wine seltzers or mixed drinks that contain just a concentration of certain fruit. Therefore, we would like you to meet with some of the most respected fruit that have made their way on top of the juicesqueezing list and add them to your daily juice cleanse.

Apple
Apart from possessing natural teeth-cleaning features, apples also contain antioxidants that lower the chance of developing such diseases as diabetes and asthma. And an apple a day really does keep the doctor away, as it reduces risks of high blood pressure or cholesterol. Just remember – the most amounts of vitamins live in the skin of the apple so do not peel it.
Blackberry
The intense purple colour of these berries saturates anthocyanin – an antioxidant that reduces risks of cancer or strokes. They also provide a large amount of vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese.
Blueberry
The activity of antioxidants in blueberries is one of the highest among any other fruit in the world, providing such treats as vitamin C, manganese and dietary fibre. They are also known to lower the risk of developing age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.
Cantaloupe
The highest concentrated antioxidant in this fruit is beta carotene that reduces the risk of developing cataracts. It’s also known as a great provider of smoother and youngerlooking skin, as well as vitamin C that significantly boosts cell reproduction. 62
Cherry
The red-coloured treats one usually finds in the neighbourhood trees help reduce inflammation and ease such pains as arthritis or gout. They also are great for those who are striving to lose some weight or possess a higher level of cholesterol.
Grapefruit
Capacitating a great number of lycopene and flavonoids, grapefruit protects the body from certain types of cancer, as well as boosts the supply of pectin which lowers cholesterol levels. And not to mention the daily dose of vitamin c it provides when feeling a bit under the weather.
Mango
The highest ranking antioxidants in this exotic fruit are lutein and zeaxanthin that protect vision and reduce age-related macular degeneration. Also, the high levels of beta carotene ensure the body’s ability to convert it into vitamin A, thus promoting bone growth and healthy immune system.
Orange
It takes just one orange to reach the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, so important for one’s immune system. It is also advised for pregnant women to consume the fruit often, as it helps preventing neural tube defects in infants. Keep in mind the white part of the orange we usually try to get rid of contains nearly the same amount of vitamin C as the core flesh of the fruit.
Peach
One of the greatest traits of peaches is an excellent regulation of the immune system, and it is also great for fighting off unwanted infections. The high amounts of potassium minerals boost nerve and muscle health.
Strawberry
Apart from being rich with vitamin C, manganese and potassium, strawberry is also helpful for preventing hardened arteries and suppressing the progression of cancerous tumours. | Summer 2018

YOGA
Not so long ago yoga seemed as a strange concept to the Western society, yet fast enough it integrated in our culture with its incredible ability to harmonize between the physical and peace-of-mind exercising. And now we are granted with the opportunity to find the most suitable yoga style to our own lifestyle among so many offered. Here are some of the most popular yoga styles according to the wellrespected “Yoga Journal” of 40 years. Words by Liene Eglīte Photos from Depositphotos
Hatha yoga
Hatha yoga is probably the best to start out with for the beginners, as it is usually slower than any other yoga styles. It is based on more of a physical practice, including many physical postures intertwined with breathing. 64
Iyengar yoga
This style is more for precise and very thorough movements all the while exercising the right breathing. The precise postures are held and perfected for quite a long time, so patience is the key when exercising Iyengar yoga.
Kundalini yoga
The Kundalini approach is to achieve equal harmony between the spiritual and physical. It is thought that this yoga style releases the energy trapped in the body’s lower spine, assisted by chanting mantras and doing meditation. | Summer 2018
CARING FOR YOUR HEALTH
Ashtanga yoga
Being one of the most challenging types of yoga, Ashtanga is meant for advanced yoga enthusiasts. It involves specific, physically demanding postures, all done in a certain sequence and started out with sun salutations.
Vinyasa yoga
This is one of the most popular yoga styles, also being one of the most athletic. It was adapted from Vinyasa a few decades back and is focused on movements and postures that harmonize with breathing.
Consultations, diagnostics, treatment CHECK-UP programs
Bikram yoga
The obvious difference of Bikram yoga from other yoga styles is the fact that it is held in a steamy hot room in which a series of 26 basic poses are executed.
Summer 2018 |
Anusara yoga
Anusara is considered to be very similar to Vinyasa, although it deals with a much bigger focus on the connection between mind, body and hearth. It is all about opening one’s heart through specific movements.

manhood smart men
WHAT
MAKES MANHOOD?
Edgars Rozenvalds - entrepreneur and owner of the very first barbershop in Latvia “Wood Religion Barbershop” - has something to say about what makes a good and respected man, both in terms of his appearance and attitude towards his other half.
I believe that this is the time which has stopped in a very beautiful period – when a suit for a man was the top of the elegance, and true gentlemen visited barbershops to not only trim the beard, but also discuss men matters and hobbies with other mates of same interests. For example, who would have thought that the traditional English barbershops would also make their way into the lives of the conservative Latvian “machos”? It was about 5 years ago when I started to think about why Latvian women started to choose foreign men more often. And the answer was simple – it was because western men tended to care for themselves more, not being afraid that looking after your hair or skin was a weak show of manhood. And now we see that also Latvian and Baltic men start to do the same and they start to realize that their exterior will show others who they are and what are they capable of. The beginning of this culture in Baltic environment was quite challenging. When 66
men started attending barbershops, they did it following their women. Women wanted to control everything, including the way men got groomed. Men had to step up and make their own decisions, and that in no way was an act of rebellion but just the necessary position men had to step into. Although many women tend to control their men led by good intentions – to care and nurture – it has to stop at the line when they start to perform maternal roles. A man has to have an equal partner beside him, not another mother to hide behind in challenging situations. And I believe that attending the barbershops alone and making their own decisions was just the right first step for men to follow through such principle. That also made me think of what a good relationship is made of. I would compare it to a business – one has to be careful, able to analyse the risks and be respectful towards the partner. Respect is something that makes a successful relationship, yet it has to be reminded that it is a two-way street. To receive the earned respected,
one has to do the same towards the partner – to listen, to hear and to try becoming better for each other. It is not fair to suddenly change one’s face after a certain period in a relationship – it is one of the utmost signs of disrespect towards the partner, not to be tolerated by anyone. And the same goes for love – the feelings must be mutual. If one person in the relationship feels suffocated and hurt, that is not right. In no world must a person suffer, just because the relationship is too inconvenient to end. For the relationship that seems to be the one, I advise the man to know when and how to say “thank you”. I believe that women should be pampered and spoiled a bit, therefore gifts really are a good way for appreciation, and I truly wonder about people who do not use the opportunity just for the sake of a principle. A woman needs support for what she is and does, and a true man will know how to give it.

REALIZE
YOUR
IDEA THROUGH CROWDFUNDING
The beauty of crowdfunding is that it not only provides an easily-accessible financial boost for small businesses, but also simultaneously promotes company’s product, thus creating a significant base of potential consumers. And it is actually quite simple – you just choose a crowdfunding platform from many available on the internet, create your business profile, set the desired funding goal and publish the information. And now it’s a waiting game – interested people notice your idea and decide to donate, often in exchange for company’s assets as a reward. Words by Roberts Vikmanis Photos from Depositphotos

How does it help your new business?
Instead of attending networking events to find potential business partners or investors, crowdfunding helps you to find more limited number of people who are most likely to be interested in your business and ready to invest in it. Often enough you start with people you know, sharing the funding request with them. Also, crowdfunding means funding assets that you do not have to pay back – not in terms of invested money or interest rates, but only in product (which also is not always the case). The other helpful side of it is that by putting your business idea out in the field, it gains an additional attention from both potential customers and investors. Your idea will stand out in the crowd and gradually be noticed by more people who consequently can become a part of your professional network.
Types of crowdfunding
Small-business owners will most likely encounter upon two types of crowdfunding – rewards-based and equity-based. Summer 2018 |
Rewards-based crowdfunding The way this type of funding works is an agreement between the donor and project developer who should reward the donation with a product related to the project, usually of value that complies with the made donation. Most often it is a guarantee to have an early access to company’s developed product. Equity-based crowdfunding This is where the donors receive shares in the company, and the number of those is also based on the respective contribution. This is usually realized by donors who believe in the future development of the company, expecting return on the investment. Just remember that crowdfunding is an excellent solution for securing financing to give a boost to your company’s initial development. It does not work as a longterm solution for your business financing. As soon as you have acquired the expected funding, start making plans for larger financial assets, considering such options as bank loans, online lenders, personal loans etc.
INTERESTING FACT
According to a recent report by PwC and the Crowdfunding Centre - “Women Unbound: Unleashing female entrepreneurial potential” – female entrepreneurs across the globe are 32 % more likely to succeed with crowdfunding than their male counterparts. It is suggested that women gain better results as potential investors perceive it as participation outside the borders of male-dominated capitalist ventures. It is also because of the tendency for women to use more personal and informal language in business. 69

HOUSING
GONE SMART
The idea for optimizing home works appeared in the 20th century with such devices as vacuum cleaner and washing machine. Then came many more appliances that were all about saving time and automatizing house works, thus opening a way to more comfortinducing innovations, including smart houses. Words by Gustavs Reinholds Photos from Depositphotos
How did houses become smart?
As written in a Forbes article by Andrew Weinreich, “In 1966, the first home computer, the ECHO IV, was built by a Westinghouse engineer on his own time with permission from his employer. The ECHO IV was designed to accomplish, among other things, tasks like computing shopping lists, controlling the temperature of your home, or turning your appliances on or off. The ECHO IV never commercially shipped. As the decades passed, the promise of technology in the home seemed to arrive in slow motion, even while there was a general awareness that this was an area with immense potential. In 1984, the National Association of Homebuilders coined the term “smart home” as a niche group that advocated for integrating technological solutions into the homebuilding process.”
How does it work?
This just proves that the idea of such home has existed for quite a while. To create a house of intelligent technology, simplifying and automating daily tasks, was a dream 70
of a bunch of minds. Not spending time on such trivial tasks as turning on lights, locking doors, lowering shades or changing thermostat settings – that does sound appealing. First smart devices in housing were connected to a single device which was placed right there in the house. Therefore, a remote control of different functions was not possible, yet it could be done from just one place. As the next step was to come up with a solution that could embody the remote factor, inventors started working on it – and voila! Now all we need is an internet connection and a device with us to carry out the controlling, which usually is a phone, tablet or computer.
What it does for you?
To get a clearer picture of how exactly the smart house system works, here are some of the most popular tasks it can perform for you: • Turn the lights on and off outside the room – especially useful for nurseries when not wanting to wake up the kid by walking in the room and turning off the
lights • Turn off the power sockets when hit with the sudden little panic attacks of “Did I turn the iron off?” • Optimize the consumption of heating while outside the house – during the cold seasons, reduce the temperature to the minimal stat and increase it before going home at the just enough time to not walk in a refrigerator after work. All in all – it will significantly reduce the costs • Adapt the necessary temperature for each room separately to avoid conflict between those family members who are “always cold” and “always hot” • Safety sensors alarm you in case movement or opening of windows or doors is detected to prevent burgling • Other sensors detect alerts of such potential dangers as leaking or smoke • Lift up or down window blinds without stepping out of the bed, or open up the gate in case a visitor arrives and you are too caught up in something to walk out and let them in

Delacroix (1798-1863) in the Louvre, Paris (FR)
MarcH 29 – July 23 One of the most prominent names of French Romanticism has re-appeared after quite a while. The last retrospective the Louvre displayed of Eugène Delacroix was in 1963, and now an exhibition of 180 artworks by the artist has returned. Some of masterpieces will delight the viewers, such as Liberty Leading the People, The Massacre at Chios, Women of Algiers. Some of them have been acquired as loans from the National Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Gallery of Canada. 78
Wanderlust in Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin (DE) May 10 – septeMber 16 This exhibition celebrates the true meaning of what we call Wanderlust – the wandering of nature, over the Alps and throughout the life. And at the very centre of it are journeys on foot – a key subject in the 19th century European art, all of which is represented in 100 works of art, created by such names as Caspar David Friedrich, Norway’s Johan Christian Dahl, Switzerland’s Ferdinand Hodler, Paul Gauguin, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and others.
Frida Kahlo in Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest (HU)
July 6 – nOVeMber 4 We all know Frida, both from her art, as well as many stories and movies dedicated to the eccentric Mexican artist. Many of the artworks in the Gallery have been loaned from the Museo Dolores Olmedo in Mexico City, including Kahlo’s famous self-portraits. | Summer 2018
Gabriele Münter in Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk (DK)
May 3 – August 19 Although not many have heard of this eccentric artist, Gabriele Münter has managed to surprise anyone who have had the chance to see her artworks. Münter is an experimental German painter, also a co-founder of the Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter with her lover Wassily Kardinski and others. The exhibition in this museum will accommodate artist’s 130 works – paintings, drawings, photos and many exhibits that have not been displayed up until now.
Andy Warhol – After Munch in Munch Museum, Oslo (NO)
Alberto Giacometti in Guggenheim Bilbao, Bilbao, Basque Country (ES) October 19 – February 24, 2019 The first part of the 20th century witnessed the emergence of one of the most talented artists – the Swiss sculptor, painter and printmaker Alberto Giacometti. Regarded as the “perfect existential artist”, his works will be exhibited as a story of his life in sculptures and paintings in forms of cubism and surrealism – periods which were at their peak during the lifespan of the artist.
May 26 – August 26 Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, who we all definitely know for his famous painting “The Scream,” is the person to whom Munch Museum was dedicated. And as Munch was one of Andy Warhol’s favourite artists who had also visited the Museum in 1983, this exhibition is no coincidence. Andy Warhol – After Munch is an exhibition of his take on famous Munch works in forms of drawings, silkscreen prints and paintings. Warhol’s interpretations of Munch’s most famous works, such as The Scream, SelfPortrait with Skeleton Arm and Madonna, are must-see objects in this exhibition.
Grayson Perry in Kiasma, Helsinki (FI) Miró, a wild spirit in Miró Mallorca Fundacío, Palma (ES)
Until 2019 The display will include the Catalan artist’s – Joan Miró’s influences, starting from prehistoric cave paintings to Japanese artworks. The location of the exhibition is also the place where Miró lived and worked until the end of his days, therefore the venue also includes a sight of his house, museum and even a sculpture garden. Summer 2018 |
Allées et Venues in Museo Carmen Thyssen Andorra, Principality of Andorra (AD) Until September 10 Although the Museum opened only last year, the collections it started with were already an outstanding take-off. THE GRAND OF SCI-FI:
WESTWORLD
“Westworld” is an American science fiction thriller of western genre that has rapidly gained massive audiences of viewers worldwide. Created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, this show is based on a 1973 movie of the same name, written and directed by Michael Chrichton. The series even ranked as the most-watched first season of any HBO original series, and the expectations are just as high for the second season, released on spring 2018. Conception of WW 2016
The ground-breaking show of 2016 is actually the second attempt to revive the story. It was first remade in 1980 series “Beyond Westworld”, also based on Crichton’s original movie. Yet it never made it further than just 5 produced episodes from which only 3 were actually aired. The whole idea of remaking a modern version of the 70s movie was already conceived during the early 1990s, brought up by the “Warner Bros.” studio. Only later on film producer Jerry Weintraub convinced HBO network to approve for a pilot of a potential remake, inviting Nolan and Joy to join the project. In 2013 the network announced ordering a pilot for a potential TV series, later on announcing “Westworld” as official series that would be premiered in 80
2015. However, the preparation took longer than expected so 2015 was awaited with a teaser that disclosed show’s actual premiere in 2016. And so the brand new wonder of science fiction began.
It Tells of…
The story of Westworld is set in a fictional Wild West themed amusement park run by the Delos Corporation. The park, co-founded and creatively directed by Dr. Robert Ford, is technologically advanced and resided by humanoid robots, also regarded as the hosts of the park. The whole concept of such park is to entertain the rich who are offered to be guests of the park, where they may indulge in whatever desires they wish with absolutely no consequences or retaliation from the hosts
– more often than not the desires being violence and murder of the hosts. Yet the robot hosts are erased of their memories daily and put back on the set narrative each day, so that the whole world would go on a constant loop and any guest arriving may enjoy the set narrative. Yet the violence and power of guests soon come to an end as the robots start developing different perception which closely resembles an actual consciousness seeded in artificial intelligence. Thus the world starts to crumble and actions of guests, as well as the inventors of the world face the danger of an uncontrolled artificial intelligence – a situation we all start to fear more in reality as well.

• One of show’s directors – Jonathan Nolan – is the brother of famous Cristopher Nolan. One can see the resemblance in taste, for sure. • One of the most symbolic quotes of the show – “These violent delights have violent ends” – comes from Shakespeare’s “Rome and Juliet”. • The first one to have been asked of this remake was none other than Quentin Tarantino, but he declined the offer. • As mentioned in episode 3 of the first season, the cost of staying in the park is 40 thousand dollars per day for each guest. • The show has received the largest number of Emmy nominations among any drama series – total of 22. • Nolan has regarded the description of the show as “the next chapter of the human story, in which we stop being protagonists.” • Sir Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood were the first cast members to be officially announced. • The very first season gathered around 11.7 million viewers per episode, which grosses as the highest number ever for a new drama series. • First season was made up of 10 episodes, and the second is to be expected to have just as much. • The original “Westworld” of 1973 was quite an inspiration for Arnold Schwarzenegger as he prepared for the role in “The Terminator”. • It is planned that the story will last up to five seasons in total. • “The Maze” and “The Door” are the subsequent titles for show’s first and second seasons.

PREPARE YOUR KID FOR FESTIVAL SEASON There’s quite a lot of controversy on whether children should be attending music festivals – some think it is too much, others believe that no one should limit them to the fun just because of their age. The main thing here is to be prepared – as long as you pay special attention to your kid during the festival and prepare him for all situations, anything is possible. Make any festival children-friendly by yourselves! Words by Māra Miķelsone Publicity photos

ESSENTIALS
SAFETY
Before attending the festival, you might need to make up a plan of sort that would foresee all potential unfortunate situations. First, adults should clearly understand each other when it comes to „who is watching the kids”? If one of you wants to leave for a bit, make sure that the other parent stays there with kids. If that goes wrong by some reason, do some pre-preparing, such as providing your kid with a wristband with your names and phone numbers on it. It is important that the label is something that cannot be easily lost, therefore badges around the neck will not do their job well. Sometimes even a simple writing on child’s arm with a marker is assurance enough. Before entering the location, talk to your kids about a possible situation of getting lost. Simply explain to them what to do in case this happens – make sure they remember your names and what you are wearing. Just as well decide upon a place to meet in case you part your ways. Such place should be very prominent, preferably in unordinary colour or shape – thus, the kid will surely remember the place and associate it with safety. Summer 2018 |
It is impossible to do without a bunch of toys and things for your kid to play with while you enjoy some music. Think thoroughly about packing the items – a compact, water-proof backpack will be the best choice. Don’t forget to fill it with water bottle and some snacks as well, in case the little one gets hungry or thirsty. Some of the toys you might consider – bubbles, glow sticks, face paint, fun hats. After all, festivals are for expressing yourself in the most creative way possible, and the same goes to parents. Considering the loud music around the territory, it is important to invest in some quality ear defenders for kids. You might think that the music is not so loud, but those little ears are not the same as the adult ones. So do not be cheap on these – find some credible brands and also do not forget consulting your kid on the design of those. Otherwise, they will try hard to get rid of them. Children are very often getting tired real fast of taking long walks and standing around. So take an inflatable chair or a pop-up stool with you, easy to pack and practical for seating. You just as well might add a blanket to sit on when having some food. And if the little rascal is the one not getting enough running time, the seats will serve just as well for the adults to watch over the kids. Some parents have started to take this thing on a whole new level – with a cart. And you know what, it is actually quite a wise idea! Make a comfortable cart for your kid to sit in, thus not limiting yourself to the places you may visit in the festival territory. It is much easier than trying to catch your running child through the crowds or just the opposite – carrying him around in your hands. And the last, but definitely not least – first aid kid. Although all festivals are equipped with medical assistance, you never know how fast can you get there in case of an accident. Pack the basics – band aids, anti-bacterial gel, sunscreen, paracetamol, medicine for stomach ache, tic removal kit and anything else you know your kid will need if special attention to his medical condition should be paid.
83

CLOTHING
The worst thing that one can expect during a festival in terms of clothing – rain. Not only does it mean that you will soak wet, but also the mud bath afterwards. Yet mud and puddles sound fun to children, so make sure to pack good-quality wellies and raincoats that are good enough for water protection, yet not too thick so that the kid will not get hot during the whole puddlejump activity. And if the weather proves to be excellent – shorts, shirt, comfortable sneakers and most definitely a hat should be with you at all times. And layers are the key to everything because they can be easily adjusted – removed or added – whenever necessary.
CAMPING
The very first thing when arriving at the festival with children should be setting up a camp. If living in a tent, make sure to put it up some place aside. We all know that the tent built next to the passages might get damaged by people who had had too much fun, if you know what we mean. Also, make sure to prepare children’s place for sleeping before moving to the festival territory, so that you can return ready to put your kid to sleep – especially considering that most of the times you will be leaving the festival with the child sleeping in your arms. Talking about the venue around the tent – prepare it with a large blanket and if possible, some sort of a border to isolate your little camping place from the rest of the crowd. Even a bright ribbon will do at this point. Investment in some quality sleeping bags, as well as roll mats for your kids to sleep on, should be significant. It is important that the kid won’t wake up the next day from being too cold or hot, or worse – with a back-ache from an uncomfortable mattress. Also, make sure that you put up some extra nets, as well as insect-repellent products. 84

SMART CELEBRATION As we all know, this year marks Latvia’s 100 years since establishing its independence, and what better way to celebrate it than with one of the most unique events in the whole world – The Nationwide Latvian Song and Dance Celebration. Here we have 3 stories of our very own SmartLynx colleagues, sharing their experiences on participating in the Celebration and what it means to them.

„I wish everyone to experience the Final Concert of the Song and Dance Celebration at least once in their lifetime – no matter if you are a participant or just a listener.”
When did you begin playing Kokle (a traditional Latvian plucked string instrument), as well as singing in a choir? It all began with music school where I learnt to play Kokle. At the very beginning I did not stand out with a particular talent for it, there actually were a lot of challenges – I was holding my hands incorrectly, did not feel the rhythm precisely, and the sound did not come out right. However, a lesson after a lesson, a concert after a concert – all of these steps made me learn more and a few years later music took upon a largely significant role in my life. What ensemble and choir are you a member of? Currently I am playing in a Kokle ensemble “Raksti” which I have been a part of for almost 7 years. And for the singing – I am a member of choir “Via Stella” where I have sung for basically the origins of the choir – for 17 years now. There are also some projects where I perform with Kokle as a solo performance. Do you have a favourite song to play or sing? Favourite songs for me change accordingly to the current emotions, situations. Nevertheless, there are a few young composers amongst my friends – I like that they are creating something brand new. Sometimes it may include new experiments and unordinary sound elements. Recently I started to fancy improvisation on Kokle – when the musical piece has been created at the exact moment. What does the participation in Song and Dance Celebration mean to you? Especially – during Latvia’s Centenary? I believe that every single Latvian Song celebration is significant and special, regardless of whether it is the centenary or any other year. Participants and organizers prepare for each Celebration as for the utmost ceremonial, grand and heartfelt of events. While the period until the Celebration is spent on smaller projects amongst the ensembles and collectives, then during the Celebration the most significant power and beauty can be seen in the moments when all of these people come together and perform in the same concerts.
88
How many Song and Dance Celebrations have you attended in your lifetime? Is there anything particular that has stood out during those? If I recall correctly, I have participated in all Song and Dance Celebrations since year 2005 – both Youth and Nationwide. When participating with the choir, I sing together with my best friend – therefore, I am truly happy to have participated in all of these Celebration together with her. What is it that you await the most during this year’s Song and Dance Celebration? As classes and concerts have taken up almost all of the time while preparing for the Celebration, I have had not much chance to listen to other works and performances. But I would be happy to attend the Dance Concerts during the Celebration. From the concerts I will participate myself, I especially await the Folk Music Concert on July 3, which I will attend with my ensemble “Raksti”. On the very same day we will also have a very interesting cooperation – we will perform together with a brass band in the Brass Band Concert. And as the highlight of the week will, of course, be the Final Concert on July 8 where some of the most beautiful Latvian choir songs will be performed. I think that a very pleasant moment will also be after the Final Concert when all participants and viewers will unite in common songs and dances during the night. | Summer 2018

“If you ask me what I expect from the Celebration, I would definitely say – celebration itself. Celebration of the power of voice, strength of a song and the union of a nation. When I sing, my soul rises up in the sky just where a plane leaves the white trail.”
When did you begin singing in a choir? My singing career began in the elementary school when music teacher created a small school choir. As I was also a student of local Music school and my oldest sister sang a lot in church choir, singing and music overall have always been huge parts of my life. There have been several different choirs I participated in for last 20 years – girl, youth and mixed. And I always felt my soul being joyful and delighted when I sang and kept traditions of Latvian singing culture, especially together with thousands of other people during Song and Dance Celebrations. What choir are you a member of? Currently I sing in women’s choir “Magone” or “Poppy”, which was established less than 2 years ago in Katlakalns, Kekavas district. It all began with 24 enthusiastic women and one professional and capable conductor Baiba Āboliņa-Smirnova. In just half a year we grew in our abilities and desires so much that we managed to achieve 1st degree diploma in mandatory choral exposition prior national Song and Dance Celebration (held every year before the Celebration), had different concerts in local House of Culture and around Latvia, and in just 1 year we were invited to Austria and Italy to have fellowship concerts with choirs of local Latvian communities. Although we don’t have national costumes yet (we are currently working on it), we made specifically designed dresses to represent the colour of poppy stem mixed with accessories of national symbols and red lips just as a poppy flower. As I took part in the founding of this choir and am the leader of 2nd alto group, this choir lays deep into my heart and my daily life, having at least 1 rehearsal every week. Do you have a favourite song to sing? There are hundreds of songs I know but only one still gives me goose-bumps and tears of joy in my eyes every time I sing it – “Gaismas pils” or “Castle of Light”.
Summer 2018 |
What does the participation in Song and Dance Celebration mean to you? Especially – during Latvia’s Centenary? I think that the National Song and Dance Celebration brings Latvians (and not only Latvians) to the roots of our traditions, shows the strength and power of our nation where every single person (singer or dancer) is a value. And with this festival we can bring this understanding of value to everyone listening and watching the performances. Together we are power! And this is important to understand, especially when there is so much unknown in the future. This year’s Celebration marks the 100th anniversary of Latvian independence so it will bring a lot of attention worldwide and I cannot imagine a better way how to share one of the most beautiful Latvian traditions. How many Song and Dance Celebrations have you attended in your lifetime? Is there anything particular that has stood out during those? This year will be my fifth time that I participate in the Celebration. Every time is a bit different as it depends on the choir, people around you and the common mood. I remember the last festival 5 years ago, when we had repetitions and the weather changed drastically – there is one song you sing in a sun in +28 degrees, and as soon as the next song comes on – rain showers and thunder suddenly appear. And the best part – no one (not a student nor senior) cared about the bad weather, as everyone continued to sing because we had this one common target in mind – to give the best performance to the audience and charge all of us with positive emotions. What is it that you await the most during this year’s Song and Dance Celebration? In every festival there are some new songs we have to learn in addition to those which are sung for decades and are loved by public. On one hand it is interesting for me to hear how new songs will be produced and passed to audience, but on the other hand – understandable that the commonly known songs will give and bring more emotions, especially if led by all-beloved senior conductors. 89

“I wish everyone to be a part of the Centenary Song and Dance Celebration to enjoy even the slightest part of the power that comes through songs and dances, something that we as Latvians can be proud of.”
When did you begin dancing folk dances? I began dancing when I was 3 years old – my mom took me to a dance collective. And to be honest – I associated my whole childhood with dancing. We had a very strict, yet beloved dance teacher who taught as well. So I danced until 9th grade, and when I moved to Riga during my Senior year, dancing was put to hold. Nevertheless, dancing was still of great interest to me, periodically reminding myself that this is where I want to return. Also, my mom, who has been a dancer for 40 years now, accompanied me to all folk dancing concerts and performances I attended regularly. Then, two years ago, I decided upon returning to dance, unfortunately my ankle trauma put dancing on hold yet again. But as I recovered, I returned to dancing last September and now I am back where I am supposed to be. What ensemble are you a member of? I currently dance in a dance ensemble “Zīle” in Ķekava, and I chose it thanks to my childhood friend who had danced in the ensemble for many seasons and encouraged me to go there as well. I heard a lot about the friendliness of the collective, therefore it played a huge role in deciding upon it. Especially considering my doubts on whether I would be able to jump back in the dancing steps. Moreover, “Zīle” celebrates a 50-year anniversary this year, which is a significant milestone for the ensemble, therefore I am even happier to have chosen it in the right moment. Do you have a favourite dance to perform? I have a lot of favourite dances I would wish to perform, and I am gradually going towards it. However there is one favourite, of course, which is called “Sasala Jūriņa”. I also love the powerful performance of the song itself, sung by Latvian singer Ance Krauze. Every time I watch the dance, my breath is taken away. What does the participation in Song and Dance Celebration mean to you? Especially – during Latvia’s Centenary? To perform in the Celebration is fulfilling my biggest dream, considering that this will actually be the first Celebration I have attended as a participant. And I am unimaginably happy to have the honour
90
to be one of the thousands of dancers and singers who will unite and create something truly Latvian together, making new memories for both the participants and viewers. How many Song and Dance Celebrations have you attended in your lifetime? Is there anything particular that has stood out during those? This will be my first Celebration as a participant, however I have experienced it before – both during childhood when following my mom as she participated, and being as a volunteer of the organizing team of the Celebration. I have also had the chance to be involved in the Celebration thanks to my dad who plays in a brass band and actually holds quite a record – he has participated in 10 Celebrations in total. Also, my grandmother has participated as a dancer and is now singing in a senior choir. It seems that everyone around me has experienced the participation in the Celebration and now it is my turn! What is it that you await the most during this year’s Song and Dance Celebration? I await absolutely everything, just to enjoy the magnificent feeling of togetherness and the uplifting proudness on who we are and what we do. | Summer 2018
SMART EMPLOYEE
As you might have noticed in this issue’s vehicle article, our very own Nikolajs Kozaks dared to try out the brand new BMW Bagger. Let’s get to know more about Nikolajs and what he does at SmartLynx. Life on the Road
I remember that I wanted to ride a motorcycle since I was child, but overall I have had a life with motorcycles for 8 years now. I have also been riding with many rides that aren’t even my own – I usually help my friends to choose the right ride for them by testing them out before purchasing. Currently I am not a member of any moto society, as I really do not have enough time for that. The work schedule is pretty full. But I do get on my bike as much as possible. I usually try to plan longer trips to go on with my wife. As soon as the season starts, we get on the bike and enjoy the road.
Life at SmartLynx
I have been working in SmartLynx for almost 3 years now as a Flight Dispatcher – it means
that I am preparing flight plans for the pilots, making sure nothing overlaps and the planes take and land as planned. Before that I was a flight coordinator for 1 year, and ground handling dispatcher for 5 years working at a ground handling company, making my way up to where I am now. I must say that the years spent in SmartLynx are really like working amongst family. And what I especially appreciate is that I feel valued and recognized for the work I do. I was recently sent down to the USA to acquire a Flight Dispatcher certificate – it was a 2-month long training course at the very prestigious Jeppesen Academy in Denver, Colorado. And such opportunity is really a gift from the company, a bonus of sort for good results in the work I do. So that really is an important milestone in my career.

The concept of the new logo was developed by our very own Public Relations and Marketing Manager Ilva Priedniece, introducing fresh look on the ideology of SmartLynx Airlines. “We approached this task with a great respect to existing brand identity and corporate legend- the story about lynx, both animal and star constellation, which is very saturated and still has a great potential for marketing use,” says Ilva. “The main idea was to achieve greater dynamics with forms and colours, and update the logo and other elements of corporate identity according to modern design requirements.” *The contest is being organized by Intellectual Property Information Centre of the Patent Office in cooperation with the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Latvian National Group of International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI LNG) and Latvian Designers’ Association. 91

SMARTLYNX TRAVEL TIPS DURING THE FLIGHT
ALCOHOL
FOR YOUR HEALTH
To feel your best in the air remember: Alcohol: Alcohol should be consumed only in moderation. For each glass of alcohol, drink two glasses of water. Water: Please make sure that you are drinking enough water during your flight. Doctors are recommending to drink at least 0,5-0,6 l water every two flight hours. Clothes: Baggy clothes are best in the air. Try not to wear any tight – fitting clothes, loosen top buttons, belts and shoelaces and remove tight socks. Circulation: Circulation of blood is helped if you try not to cross your legs or ankles for long periods of time. Elastic support socks or stockings may help. From time to time it is good to stand up and make a little walk or make some exercises. Remember that even the smallest movements help with blood circulations, so you can also do some stretching while seated.
SLEEP AND SEATBELTS
If you´re planning to sleep during the flight, we recommend you fasten your seatbelt so the cabin crew don’t have to wake you should the Captain need to turn on the “fasten seatbelt” sign. We recommend that you keep your seatbelt fastened at all times while seated.
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
SMOKING
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Hopefully, we already know about your special requirements, such as wheelchair assistance or dietary request. If not, and this is an outbound flight, please advise a member cabin crew so they can make appropriate arrangements for your return journey. Summer 2018 |
Alcohol should be consumed only in moderation. Drinking your own alcohol, including alcohol you have been purchased from tax free shop at airport, is strictly forbidden. Passengers may only consume alcoholic drinks served by the crew. Please note, that crew can evaluate the situation and refuse to serve alcoholic drinks without any further explanation at any time.
In line with international policy, all SmartLynx flights are non-smoking. It is an offence to smoke on board and it is forbidden also in lavatories. We ask you to refine from smoking for the comfort and safety of passengers and crew.
To use of radios and devices with radio transmitter/receivers is strictly prohibited during the flight, as it may interfere with the aircraft´s navigation system. Mobile telephones, with the exception of those with a “flight safe” mode, should be switched off at all times on board the aircraft. Phones with a “flight safe” mode should have this activated before you switch your mobile phone off for take-off. Personal CD, DVD and MP3 players may be used, but only when the seatbelt sign is switched off. Wireless devices such as PDA-s laptop computers, electronic games and E-readers may only be used on board if the wireless function is disabled and again, may only be used while the seatbelt sign is off. 95
SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS! We value your feedback! We strive to make every flight into the best experience possible for our passengers, hence we highly value every feedback we can get. We would be very grateful if you could spare a moment and fill out a very small survey concerning onboard service. Please ask Flight Attendants for a survey form to provide your feedback and return the filled survey form back to the Flight Attendants.
