We have not only broadened our destination list with more places of incredible culture and weather, but also added Copenhagen and Paris airports as points of take-off for SmartLynx Airlines charter flights.

But it’s not all about changes, as some things are ready to stay the same or re-appear. Such as renewing our flight to the very hot and vibrant Sharm El Sheikh from both Riga and Tallinn Airports. We also continue to strive for the very best amongst our technical team, putting safety first! At SmartLynx Airlines everything is checked to the most intricate detail just to provide the smoothest flight you may ever experience.

Now both Tallinn and Riga airports will be provided with our representative who will be there to help out each and every one of you. If there are any problems with the flight, such as delay, the friendly staff will be right there at the airport to help you. Cascamorras

sePtember 6. bAzA, sPAIN Over 500 years ago there was quite a dispute over „Virgen de la Piedad” statue, originated between two towns – Baza and Guadix. The original home of the statue – Baza – challenged a representative of the other town to try and attempt to steal the statue without being paintsplattered by the citizens. Nowadays, a reenactment of the event is developed each year where Cascamorras – a clown dressed in special clothing – runs through the city to the statue while everyone splatters him with paint. We would say it’s a good way to release some stress. 10

Laura Arnicāne and her husband Andis have decided to start up something quite new in Latvia – what initiated as living by Zero Waste principle has now turned into a new philosophy. An ideology that the family now lives by is all about being environmentfriendly by giving more thought onto how and what they consume, making their habits cyclical rather than lineal. “Instead of going to a store, buying something and throwing it out, we find ways to re-use and purchase only the things we need, rather than the ones we have just been used to.” How is such change possible and how to cope with it? it frees you and gives you more time and energy to do the things you not only need, but also like.

How do you choose to “present your idea” to the sceptical mind?

The question which is on everyone’s mind – what made you to take upon such lifestyle?

There was not one single moment that determined this change. We had been maintaining an eco-friendly lifestyle for a while. But then we started to think a bit further ahead of ourselves. It begun with thinking about what we put in our bodies, and then gradually turned into wondering about what our choices do to the world around us. At the very beginning, it was only about zero-waste. But now it has set in so much deeper. It has turned into a life philosophy, the main goal of which is to be as friendly to our environment as possible. We have heard a lot from sceptical people saying – “What’s the point? Just because we will change, does not mean anyone else is going to do that.” But the main thing to remember here is – we do not have to blindly follow everything everyone else is doing. We have decided to do things differently and we do not really care about 16

whether or not someone else won’t do it. It’s our choice to change ourselves, thus maybe changing a bit of the world for better. The change always starts within ourselves, as cliché as it may sound. And the reason we started a blog about our lifestyle – we just wanted to show people that it is entirely possible. We both have some background in marketing, therefore we were really happy to put it to a use. This blog is about informing people who have their doubts. There is no idea-pushing, just truthful display on how changing your life can benefit both you and the nature around you. A recent study showed that people just live in a mess of habits – 95 % of the things we do daily are up to our routines. And it is difficult to change them all, that’s true. But just start with one, and then the next one, and so on. Otherwise, we live in a daily turmoil that just exhausts us. And don’t think that giving up your habits restricts you in any way. It does just the opposite –

If a person does not want to talk about it – we don’t push the idea onto them. The only way we have mastered is how to address people who want to talk about it. We cannot stress that enough – this lifestyle is not meant just for the rich and elite when the only requirement is to shop at the expensive eco stores. It’s just the opposite, really. This lifestyle actually saves the three most important resources – time, money and energy. And every one of us values these resources and that is how we get people’s attention. Because who doesn’t want to save their time and energy, as well as money? Such living helps you not to harm nature, meanwhile helping yourself – all with consuming less. For instance, let’s take our shopping habits. We spend so much time in stores while trying to choose from the vast variety of things we don’t even need. There are so many people who work hard all week straight, and for what? Just to spend a weekend with their families in a supermarket? It shouldn’t be like that. Therefore, we believe that our lifestyle helps one to get out of this endless cycle of pointlessly wandering through shops thus spending all your free time. Time which you could spend so much better and worthwhile. And not to mention the financial aspect. There are so many situations when we buy something just because there is a discount to it. And we just get hooked on the item, not even considering whether we need it. We spend our resources aimlessly, and then continue working hard to do the same thing later. This lifestyle of ours actually makes us calmer and able to enjoy our lives more. Honestly, since we started living by this idea, we have never had a worry about some nonsense items we saw once in a shop or even about not having enough money at the end of the month. By putting it all into perspective, it breaks your mind free from worries. We also want to stress that we are not scientists. We won’t tell you all about scientific purpose of saving earth or its processes or resource renewing. We  | Autumn 2017

are more like representatives of popular science, and that is our purpose with the blog. We just want people to relate. We want to show that it is not necessary to live in forest cabin just to be green. Just like so many people, we live in a city apartment while finding all the possible ways to be as natural as possible. And that is what helps – when people can relate. Can you relate? “Have you ever had that feeling when something is missing all the time? You think about adding some furniture to your living room, you purchase it and then you turn on to the kitchen – a missing shelf or a bowl. And it does not end. Even when your home is just filled with interior items, every single moment you think about something that’s missing. It exhausts you so much. And now, when finally ending this cycle, we see it all around, especially with young people. And that’s just not right.”

What would be the most important factors to bear in mind when taking up Zero Waste lifestyle? After all, it’s not just the material things you give, but also emotional ones – just as your habits and routines. I must admit, you have to have a strong personal determination. Because let’s be honest – if you are not really sure about something, you will always find excuses not to do it. The inner acceptance is what it is about – if I truly want to do it, I will do it. A sceptical person will never change their stand. The moral thought world is also something to overcome. To change one’s habits – that is really difficult. However, to take a look back at yourself and your previous routines

18

– that is where you have to gather your strength. Always remember – never be critical of your past self. We change and it’s normal. You didn’t know half of the things you know now. And the fact that you’ve decided to change is good enough. Also, some dark thoughts will arise, such as insecurity of yourself. Some things you have been used to and now have to change – it will mess with your head a bit. Sometimes it’s even something that is not up to you, but rather your upbringing. All I can say – just be ready for that and do not give in. It will pass and you will understand what the change is about soon enough. You have got to be ready for experimenting

and expressing creativity. Be open to new things. There will be a few moments where you won’t see any alternative solutions. But just take some time to think it over, and suddenly you’ll realize that there is a solution. Even more than one. For example, choosing an environment-friendly shampoo - if you are not ready to wash your hair with soda-based product (made by yourself, of course), start looking for shampoos with less-synthetic packaging. And so on! Patience really is a virtue. No changes will happen immediately, even if we are used to the modern world where everything happens in a single moment. When choosing to live green and zero-waste,

| Autumn 2017

Go Green smart people

everything will be a process that takes time. You start sort of a slow-living mode, which is actually so nice. You begin to think more and make spontaneous decisions less. And I mean the decisions one usually regrets later. This lifestyle also takes up a lot of planning. It will seem to take more time at the beginning, however when you’ll get used to it – it will just come to you naturally. For instance, planning your food for the week. That doesn’t mean you have to prepare a single dish, put it in a freezer and eat every single day. You have to have a variety in your menu – just choose a different dish for every day, put down the ingredients you will need for it and prepare as much as you can in your spare time. Thus, you won’t need to spend evenings wondering about “what to eat tonight” and looking for recipes to make something. Stick to your week plan and it will take so little time that you can actually enjoy your dinner, rather than spend all the time planning it. It takes less time, as well as energy.

How did it begin for you? What would you consider as an inspiration for Zero Waste movement?

It all started with us seeing two very inspirational talks. One was about Bea Johnson who decided to start advocating the Zero Waste movement, telling of her and her family’s experience while living by a Zero Waste principle. They have been doing that since 2008, taking a stance against needless waste. And the other one was about Carolien Hoogland who lived for a year without money, thus showing everyone how many things we buy and live for that we actually don’t need. There have also been a few memorable books we’ve read, especially bright being one about minimalism. I guess that is also a closely intertwined concept which I’m really interested in and gradually striving for. I also realized that we are not cult people. There are many things we’ve taken from different people and inspirations. The main thing to remember is that information has to be carefully revised and thought about. You cannot just take one person’s stance and try to apply it to yourself. It is ok to listen to a few people and take whatever you think is the best for yourself. Autumn 2017 |

Is there such thing as a fundamental manual for living by Zero Waste concept? Sort of rules that everyone needs to put up on the wall and study?

Actually, there is a pyramid of the concept of Zero Waste. And it might surprise you, but the top layer is not about waste at all. It follows as this: 1. Giving up. Just give up the things that do not serve you. The things you haven’t used for a while and the ones that just take up your space. 2. Reduce. We never suggest anyone to abandon such basic things as toothpaste or facial crème. All we say is that there are too many varieties of such in every single house. Day cream, night cream, sunscreen and so many more that actually can be reduced to one single item. 3. Sustainability. Think about items you can re-use and give up the things that serve you for a short period of time. Plastic wraps and bags are things we can invest in once and then re-use. For example, we ourselves try to use one coffee mug or water bottle as many times as possible. Just invest in one sustainable packaging and it will serve for a long time. Choose quality over quantity, as simple as that. 4. Recycling. The reason why this is only on the fourth level of the pyramid – if you observe all the upper aspects, recycling will be the easiest thing. We re-cycle in simple cardboard boxes and to be honest

– it takes one month to fill up a small box. So do not start with recycling, but rather with reducing. 5. Compost. This is only an optional choice. If you live in an environment where you can make an actual pile of compost, created by household waste, it’s great. If not – just be sure to follow all of the other pyramid ways and it will make a change.

For those who are a bit afraid, yet wanting to make some changes for not only a better world, but also for better selves – what would be your advice?

First of all, start by giving up spontaneous purchases. When you decide to buy something, make sure it’s purposeful. Then start planning, which is the key to leading a life without things you don’t need. Even though it will be challenging in the beginning, thinking ahead of whether or not you will want a cup of coffee on your way to work – you will get used to it. And patience – well, I mentioned it before and I will mention it again - it is an important trait to develop. Because nothing will come to you immediately – all changes, whatever they are about, require time and adjusting. And when you start to get into it, you will not even notice how fine you are doing. From www.seekthesimple.com It is a philosophy that encourages to think over our everyday life – what, how much and how do we consume. Simply said, we encourage thinking and re-building your concept of how you’ve lived, consumed and thrown things out. Zero Waste stands for different resource cycle, other than the one we have been used to. What to start with, you may ask? Definitely by observing your daily rituals and finding the things you might do differently. For example, not to buy products in packages, instead using re-using your own prepared bags. And then comes the creative part – try making things on your own. Do you like coconut milk? Make it from a coconut bought at the store. Do you like a fancy facial crème? Make it yourself from amazing ingredients. You get the idea! And then comes the last thing – recycling. If you have a strong willpower, recycle everything. If not, recycle some things. It is important to start! 19

Neither could we, but that’s what the place started from; beginning from 1980’s many investors started to pick up on the location’s benefits and begun to build their resorts just to be the top coastal resort beside the Red Sea. HURGHADA IS DIVIDED INTO 5 MAIN PARTS El Ahia and El Helal are considered to be the northern part of Hurghada, located near the administrative area of the city, including police departments, Mayor’s office and even Immigration Services. This region mainly consists of private villas and highrated hotels, therefore regarded as one the safest in the city.

El Dahara is the old part of the city and where the true essence of Hurghada lies. This is where all the local shops are located, traders keenly waiting for bargaining. Perfumes, papyrus, jewellery, shisha pipes and so many more traditional Egyptian bounties can be found in this region. This is also the place where most of the locals live, yet still housing various hotels, restaurants and food markets.

El Kawsar is regarded as the modern part of Hurghada and the “new city centre”. Located in the area there is the Esplanada Mall - one of the largest shopping areas. One will also find the famous Little Buddha Bar, Club and Restaurant which is rumoured as one of the most fun places in the city. High-rated hotels are also quite a frequent sight in the region.

El Memsha is a village road stretching for over four kilometres and is a place where most of the city’s hotels can be found. The road also locates the traditional bazaar, post office and long-distance bus stations in case you are planning to take a trip to Cairo or some other Egyptian must-see sights. Comparing to the other parts of the city, this region tends to be more quiet and hussle-free.

Sekalla or Sheratin road is the city centre where various bazaars, supermarkets, restaurants and night clubs are located. One will also find the famous Sakala square which is surrounded by specialized fish restaurants and local food establishments. Further on, El Arousa square can also be found where a bride (or a mermaid) stands in the middle of the road.

WHAT TO DO? Water-sports have become a huge part of Hurghada’s lifestyle, as it offers vast opportunities of windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, diving and so many more. Diving and snorkelling are especially spectacular, as Hurghada holds most amazing underwater gardens, rare fish and coral reefs. Mahmya is an island that is just a 45-minute boat ride away from Hurghada. The stunning coral reefs and turquoise waters are just a few of island’s beauties. One can snorkel in the waters, as well as enjoy a nice buffet lunch with a spectacular view. El Gouna is also considered as the “Venice of Africa”. It began as a project of just a few private villas, yet now has grown into a private city housing its very own school, hospital, entertainment facilities, hotels and even an airport. This place is usually trendy for the high-class locals or richer tourists. If the vibrant city seems a bit much to you and your fellow companions, try going to Sahl Hasheesh. It is considered as the most peaceful, natural environment in the whole region, and its seaside – as the most beautiful. Hurghada Marina Boulevard is usually a great place for evening strolls, looking at and dreaming about luxury yachts parked in the marina. Why evening? Because this is one of the best places to witness a magical sunset that falls right into the Red Sea. Although not that typical for Egypt, this city also houses two churches of beautiful architecture – the Red Sea Monasteries of St. Anthony and St. Paul. These are supposed to date back to 4th century AD. St. Anthony church is encircled by large walls, surrounding a garden, chapels and even a bakery. And St. Paul’s was built by two hermits who decided to isolate themselves from the material world. And turning on to the Islamic religion – go and see the Abdulmoneim Riadh Mosque. Located right in-between the ocean and the main street, this beautiful piece of architecture consists of impressive arches, domes and intricately carved hallways. And every day the call for prayer can be heard as the sound resonates from within the building walls. For families traveling with children (or just for fun adults), Hurghada offers not just Autumn 2017 |

And all of the fun activities have been developed to be fitted for all ages, starting from infants to adults. Still for the larger families – we also suggest the Hurghada Grand Aquarium. This venue offers a spectacular experience of the marine life in the Red Sea. The selection of fish is unbelievable, just as well as other sea creatures you will have never seen before.

As already mentioned before, diving is a must-do activity while visiting Hurghada. Here are a few choices – Umm Gamaar features a cave a few metres below the surface, and dolphins and sharks are quite often visitors to the area. HURGHADA TRADITIONAL CUISINE

Fatta is a dish usually prepared for celebrations, yet often enough consumed on a daily basis as well. It consists of fried bread and rice layers, all covered in garlic and vinegar meat soup. Just as the name sounds in English – this dish tends to be quite fattening. Molokhia or Mulukhiya is a soup or sauce made from the leaves of jute and corchorus plants, all chopped up with garlic, coriander and meat. Usually served with bread or rice, this dish is prepared quite differently in various Egyptian regions, like substituting meat with shrimp. Halawa is made from sesame paste, usually prepared in all kinds of shapes. Just as a simple energy bar, this food is consumed

as a snack and could be infused with many ingredients, such as almonds, pistachios or pine nuts. Feseekh is considered an appropriate dish only during the Sham-El-Nessim festival (spring celebration). The dish basically is a fermented, salted and dried grey mullet. But not just anyone can prepare it, as this calls for a specialist titled Fasakhani. If an amateur tries preparing the fish, it could actually be poisonous. Kushari is considered as the Egyptian national dish, as well as the most popular item to consume during lunch breaks. Its consistence is quite simple yet delicious – pasta and tomato sauce, embellished with rice, lentils, caramelized onions, garlic and chickpeas.

EGYPT HACKS Hire a tour guide

Any place in Egypt is one of the most challenging (yet spectacular) to travel at. Therefore, hiring a local guide will help you to experience most of the Egyptian culture while keeping safe and sound.

Negotiate

Always negotiate the price for items. Even when you buy just a bottle of water or gum – ask for the price first and if you think that the salesman has exceeded it a bit, let him know and get a lower value. 26

Comfort first

Bring the most comfortable shoes you have as you will be walking long distances by foot, and the roads in Egypt also tend to be dirty.

Stay hydrated

This is a must! The weather will be unusually hot, and even if you feel fine after a longer walk, keep that water bottle with you at all times. Dehydration is something no one wants to experience during their vacation.

Respect

We all know that the Egyptian culture is one of the most peculiar, therefore be sure you respect their traditions. For women: avoid as much nakedness on your body as possible. The clear alternative would be to keep your knees and shoulders covered and have a scarf with you at all times, in case visiting a mosque. For men: although wearing shorts is fine, avoid any sleeveless shirts or gym attires. Also, if visiting someone’s house, pair of long trousers will be necessary.

BmW 5 series smart car

Model BMW 540i xDrive (G30) Type Sedan Transmission 8-speed Automatic Combined Fuel Consumption 6.9 l/ 100 km Engine Type 6-cylinder, 3.0 litres

What we have here today is a brand new BMW 5 Series, first presented in the Paris Motor Show. It is considered as a direct competitor to Mercedes-Benz E Class, and also one to the new Audi A6, although it is still being manufactured. So let’s take a seat and look how well does this shiny vehicle perform.

Assisting Well

This car has experienced a lot of conceptual enhancements. Many things have been overtaken from flagship 7 Series, and not just that – they have also been upgraded significantly. For example - the assistant systems. They are not just the same as in the 7 Series, they are improved. And we are 44

talking about vast spectrum of functions – various lane assistants, brake assistants and safety features, such as Distronic Radar which intuitively adapts to the driver. It weighs in whether there is an obstacle or a vehicle too close in front of you. Such function helps well on the highways at high speed. Although there are a lot of systems assisting you, they do not restrict the driver from making different manoeuvres.

Smart Car

Basically, all of these functions are closely adapted to the driver. Even the start-stop automatics that we have been introduced to a few years ago. This system in BMW is already that smart that it actually weighs in

whether or not it is worth turning off the engine. If older systems turn it off as soon as we stop, then this vehicle thinks prior. It has many various factors according to which this decision is made, and yes – the system is so smart already that it actually makes a decision. It does not just read the signs, but also is starting to read the traffic light signals – so if you stop at the red light which is due to turn green in the matter of seconds, the engine will not turn off. Also, if the driver makes the same route every day, the system starts to recognize it. It seems a bit weird, however this is the direction the manufacturers are going now – to implement the so called autonomous driving. | Autumn 2017

BMW 5 Series smart car

Interface by a Wave

As it can be seen from the very beginning of driving, the projection on the front glass takes up a larger space than in the previous models. It also displays more features, such as navigation. The interface system with a 10.25 inch-screen is also implemented with the hand gesture feature. The driver does not need to change his position to reach the panel, rather just waving at it. It is a significant improvement in the field of safety, as the driver does not need to make any excessive moves that do not comply with safe driving.

Lighter, better, faster

This model has been made lighter – in comparison to the previous model, it lacks already 100 kg. It is all thanks to the CLAR (the new Cluster Architecture platform) technology. And that makes a positive impact on not only the consumption, but also dynamics. Nowadays there are so many elements one can make lighter. I believe that in this car a lot of aluminium has been used instead of the heavy, rigid metal. When driving it, the lightness can be felt as well. The modified suspension set-ups are working incredibly. The car overcame various obstacles pretty easy. The way it just “eats up” the road pits seems so easy-going. I do not feel alarmed, whatsoever. It is a bit tricky in terms of speed though, meaning that it is very difficult to feel it. I do not even notice as we have already accelerated to the city’s speed limit of 50 km/h. Therefore, the driver has to be very careful with that, especially bearing in mind the new unmarked police cars going all around Latvia. We can hear the engine quite well in this vehicle. However, I believe that the model with smaller engine is a lot quieter. And it is also easy to spot the shifting of the gears, the total of which are 8 in this model. However, I do not regard it as a negative thing – I actually believe that BMW engineers have thought this out well, wanting the driver to gain the dynamic feeling and to feel every kilometre driven with this car. Everything in this model has become better, lighter and faster.  Autumn 2017 |

45

Inside the BMW

It seems that more thought has been given to everyone in the car, not only just the driver. As I have witnessed in other tests and now myself – there is a lot more space in the back of the car. This model also includes screens for the passengers in the back. However, not this, nor the very comfortable seating would make me want to go in the back and feel as if I am in a limousine. After all, the main moto of BMW is “Sheer Driving Pleasure” which is truly manifested in this model. The feeling you get while driving this model is as if you are driving a much smaller car – it is more responsive and adapts quite well. Driving really does seem to enhance the joy of driving. The only thing that I would want to change about the interior – buttons. The plastic material of the buttons does not comply well with the rest of the interior that seems to be tailored as a suit, special for the driver. The NAPPA leather lining is well-thought-out choice for the interior. 46

| Autumn 2017

Exterior

The vehicle looks really classy, especially in this Black Sapphire Metallic and with the so called M package (which is a must-have for our region). Sides include air currents that enhance the so called shark look. It is surprising that these are R20 tyres, giving a completely different feeling when driving. As soon as you approach the vehicle, lights appear in the handles. Such feature has been noticed in older models as well, yet it is always a nice touch. The trunk seems deep enough to house even skis or snowboards. Some space of it has been also taken up by the tyre arches which are pretty high in this model. The fin that also works as an antenna is a must in BMW. The adaptive LED lights are also self-evident, as all modern cars include them now.

Autumn 2017 |

Concluding

This vehicle has so many new functions that it is worth just sitting in the garage for one day and to make sense out of all. Although BMW has not yet launched this model with a full autonomous system, it is in their plans to provide such with the new 7 Series. We can enjoy some of the features of such system in this model, yet we have to bear in mind that our roads are not really suitable for such driving. We have a long, literal road ahead us. And most importantly – more and more cars are being manufactured in a way for the driver and passengers to forget about the world around them. And in its essence – it is completely right. It works for the choosy Europeans, which we qualify for as well. Unfortunately, our roads do not.

HAS SHAVING BECOME MORE

MODERN?

Barbershop specialists have so much experience to share when it comes to the historical knowledge into the world of shaving. How has it changed since the “Sweeney Todd” times? Is it still as dangerous as many might think? And most importantly, how to gain a smooth and elegant shave?

The main thing that has changed about the shaving ritual is attitude. A modern urban citizen is in a constant rush. If earlier shaving was a man’s ritual, taking up to 30 to 40 minutes, then now it is part of a daily routine that is attempted to be simplified and more comfortable. Nowadays, even 10 minutes for shaving are considered a much too long time to take. Of course, the product assortment and choices were not as vast as they are now. Currently, man has the choice of trying out many various razor types, even having the liberty to choose from such factors as manufacturer, design 48

and material. And not to mention all the additional equipment – knives, brushes, bowls, towels and shaving cosmetics. If we talk about shaving in a hair salon, earlier it actually was much more dangerous. But not by razors or knives – that process has been maintained and perfected throughout countless years. There was an incredible chance of getting infected by various sicknesses. However, now the disinfection standards are very high, especially in Latvia. It actually has been noted that Latvian standards are even higher than in Ireland and England.

Nowadays, the level of danger while shaving is up to the man himself. And that has not been affected by time. Of course, now there are so many products available that help to prepare one’s skin for the whole process of shaving – hair softener, pore opener and other helpful features. Maybe that could be considered as a modern benefit, however the skin can be prepared well enough with a simple hot towel. And when shaving, one has to hold the razor at a correct angle, all while gently stretching the skin. So yet again, it is all about the process that the man or a specialist performs. | Autumn 2017

Yes, that really is a thing. Moreover, it’s a business. Sarah Kaufmann, more widely known as The Cheese Lady, is a woman who makes her living as a cheese sculptor. Not only does she creates masterpieces for stores or different events, but also hosts workshops on the art and traditions of cheese making and sculpting.

Why Start Business in the Baltics?

Other than the fact that Baltic States are all about mixing business and pleasure, there are several more reasons why one should consider starting up a company in this environment. Especially, if you have developed a unique idea based on the ones we have collected here. So we present just a few out of so many reasons why consider starting up your venture in one of these Baltic grounds.

BALTICS Latvia is an excellent environment for innovations that make one healthier and fitter. Such as the new studio equipped with a brand new technology- EMS. It is an electric muscle stimulation that adapts to each body, thus providing an effective workout of one’s muscles in a very short period of time. This small business has already developed quickly in the world and now makes its way into the Baltics.

LATVIA • Economic crisis has been a reason for the government to develop various programs that would attract foreign investments. • One can choose to start up incorporate limited liability company, joint stock company, branch, representative office or even sole trader. • Registration procedures are rather quick and unchallenging. It has been calculated that establishing a company in Latvia takes average of 1 to 4 days. • Latvia is sort of a logistic hotspot in all of the Eastern Europe – it houses convenient seaports and transport routes, as well as is just a few hours away by plane from all European “hot” cities. • The internet connection is considered as one of the fastest in the world. • Almost all of the citizens of Latvia speak at least two languages – Latvian and Russian. • Number of educated people is one of the highest, therefore creating a lot of industry specialists.

ESTONIA • In 2000, Estonian government passed a law declaring internet access a human right, therefore one will find Wi-Fi even in the most rural of places. • Estonian government would not charge a corporate tax like others, being very liberal in this sense. It taxes distributed corporate profit at the capital gains rate of 21 %. And if company invests its profits back into the business, it would face no tax expense. • Three major success stories are already telling you something – Skype, TransferWise and Taxify. • There are already various businesses that operate with just few employees and small capital. They can even develop faster, from a financial aspect. • According to Wall Street Journal, Estonia houses more start-ups per head of population than any other European country. • Its innovative e-residency programme is one of the first ones in the world that offers the new entrepreneurs to become Estonia’s digital residents. • Each year the number of Estonian companies grows rapidly. It would mean a more intense competition, however it is also a proof for fertile business grounds.

Well, the clear answer would be – we do not live in an ocean. Yet this invention does not take that for an answer. The Goldfish Walker (do not worry – not just for goldfish) is a specially made installation on wheels in which one can easily put the fish bowl in. After that – be sure to walk on smooth roads, as pits can make the water splash out.

Computers going visual

Is there anything computers cannot do? Apparently not because now computers will recognize images better than humans. Although this might seem a bit scary (artificial intelligence taking over the world and all), this is actually great news. This emerging invention will be a huge investment into the medical field with diagnostics.

One might think of several technological implementations into such kind of shoes – imagine, no more sweaty feet and feeling chill all through a hot summer season. Yet, these are just shoes with holes in them, the inventors of which try to pass it as a luxury. Better yet – there are actually people who buy this invention of the decade. Would you try it?

THE COMEBACK

OF 2017 –

TWIN PEAKS

Television has been made a huge part of our daily entertainment assortment. Whether you are a sci-fi fan watching “Doctor Who” or a warrior spirit closely following the mysterious plots of “Game of Thrones”, there is no denying that this kind of TV is even more exciting than a full-length movie. Therefore, to celebrate the amazing concept of TV shows, we begin this season with the return of the decade – “Twin Peaks”. Words by Anastasija Stepakova Publicity photos

THE CREATOR

Who created this mesmerizing piece of TV, you might ask? None other than David Keith Lynch himself. In simple words - an American filmmaker, musician, writer, artist, photographer, as well as a prominent representative of American independent cinema. Yet there is nothing simple about this human being. How did he come to the world of cinema and created such works of art? This is the story of an exceptional director and an integral part of American, as well as World’s cinema. In 1967 Lynch began to study the camera art and took his first short movie titled “The Alphabet” which combined both animated cartoons and motion picture. The picture had been based on a nightmare experienced by the Lynch’s wife’s goddaughter Peggy. Peggy also played the role of a girl in the movie. During the same time Lynch was working on the movie titled “The Grandmother”. With the prepared script he participated in a competition to receive a scholarship of the American Film Institution. And for his own surprise, he did receive the prize. In 1971 Lynch started to work on his fulllength debut, funnily titled as “Eraserhead”. Because of some financial problems, the filming was abruptly stopped, and only five 56

years later (in 1976) the work on the movie was finally finished. In spite of the initial skeptical studio reviews of the movie, the work turned into a cult movie. Even Stanley Kubrick had expressed his regret of not taking such movie himself. In 1980 Lynch starts his work on the “Elephant Man” which received a total of eight Oscar nominations, including one for directing. The movie touches upon the topic of humanness by presenting an image of a crippled hero who turns out to be more kind, honest and humane than the surrounding people we call “normal”. After this, Lynch was offered to direct the third part of the “Star Wars” epos, however he preferred the drama “Dune”. In 1986 the scandalous thriller “Blue Velvet” comes out, telling a story of a secret criminal network that controls the lives of patriotic American town citizens. The movie receives an award from the National Society of Film Critics in the nomination of “Best Movie” and “Best Director”. Later on, in 1990 Lynch filmed the grotesque road movie “Wild at Heart”. Despite the mixed reactions of critics, the jury of Cannes Film Festival with Bernardo Bertolucci in the front decides to award the movie with the “Palme d’Or” award. The very same

year had also consisted of Lynch’s debut on TV with “Twin Peaks”. The plot of the series – investigation into a mysterious killer who murdered a schoolgirl Laura Palmer in a small American town named Twin Peaks. The series became a well-known cultural milestone in the beginning of 1990’s. Since then, every year there is a large gathering of all the “Twin Peaks” fans held in Seattle. In 1992, a prequel of the psychedelic “Twin Peaks” comes out – “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me”. The premiere of the picture in Cannes turned out to fail, however – press was full of devastating reviews. The director himself explains the failure with the fact that everyone awaited to see the continuation of “Twin Peaks”, however received something very different. Critics’ objections against the movie resulted in two ill-connected parts of one movie. Years later the movie “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me” is no longer considered as a fiasco; more positive reviews start to come out. On May 5, 2017 David Lynch announced his leave from cinema. However, after the Cannes Film Festival (May 17 to 28), Lynch has changed his mind. It is considered that the change of heart was due to exuberant ovations over the new season of renewed “Twin Peaks”, directed by him. | Autumn 2017

Twin Peaks

THE STORY BEHIND THE TOWN

So what is it about “Twin Peaks” that has made the beginning of the 1990’s so attached to the show? Let’s start with the plot: Following an FBI special agent Dale Cooper, we get to meet the mysterious town of Twin Peaks the agent has been drawn to. The recent murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer has created a lot of suspicion amongst the town residents, all of which is combined with criminal, melodramatic and even supernatural elements. As the story goes further, we discover new and terrifying things about the eccentric characters. The rest of the story is up to your eyes and ears. Meanwhile, here are „Twin Peaks” 1992 facts and figures that might shock the ones who already know the show and intrigue the ones who are about to watch it. • The bird you see in the opening titles is one of the Wren species; • The full name of agent Cooper is Dale Bartholomew Cooper; • Laura’s favourite drink is cocktail named „the brown cow” (cola + vanilla ice-cream);

• Harry Goaz (Andy) met Lynch accidentally – when he was working as a taxi driver, he took Lynch to a concert. They started a conversation which resulted in an invite to act in the show; • Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne) is the niece of the famous 70’s rock singer Suzi Quatro; • Miguel Ferrer (Albert Rosenfield) is the son of actor José Ferrer and the cousin of the famous George Clooney; • During the very peak of the show, ABC organized a special telephone line: one could call the number and hear the plot of the previous episode from Lucy Moran (Kimmy Robertson); • Sheryl Lee (Laura, Maddy) was haunted with nightmares long after the end of the series, where she saw the Killer Bob; • The scene where Maddy gets murdered was shot in two versions: in one the murderer was Leland Palmer, and in the other – Benjamin Horne. It was done in such a manner so that not even the filming crew would know who the real killer was;

WHAT COMES NEXT?

So why is it that we decided to write about this show? Well, you might have heard that David Lynch, in collaboration with Mark Frost, decided to not stop there – “Twin Peaks: The Return” had been premiered on the screens on May 21, 2017, allowing the fans to experience the cinematographic joy they’ve been waiting for years. It is now Showtime TV series consisting of the total of 18 episodes, and the finale is due on September 3, 2017. The first two episodes Autumn 2017 |

of the renewed show were presented in the Cannes Film Festival 2017, after which Lynch received a full 5-minute long ovation. The whole series were developed by Lynch and Frost in the term of several years. Most of the original actors returned to the show, including Kyle MacLachlan in the role of FBI special agent Dale Cooper. Also a variety of new actors will appear, amongst which are Balthazar Getty, Laura Dern, Naomi Watts, Scott Coffey, Michael Cera, Jim Belushi,

• In 1990 „Esquire” included a cover where dead Laura was pictured, wrapped in plastic, with the title – „Woman of the Year”; • When Catherine Martell disappears after the fire of sawmill, and a mysterious Japanese appears in the town - not even the film crew knew that it was just disguised Piper Laurie. • David Lynch chose Sheryl Lee for the role of Laura just because he liked a photo of her. Only later on was he actually captivated by her act; • Frank Silva initially was just a crew member on the set. After Lynch noticed him as he was working on Laura’s room set, he took some shots of Frank and decided that he would be an ideal evil spirit; • Only 15 days pass from the moment of finding Laura Palmer’s body to discovering her murderer;

Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Until the premiere, not much was known about the plot of the new series, however the Showtime president David Nevins stated that “the new series would bring back agent Cooper to Twin Peaks”. So get off the magazine and start watching because this is promised to be an unforgettable and thrilling ride.

NO SUCH THING AS BAD

WEATHER

Although autumn seems to be associated with rainfalls and wind, it shouldn’t be a reason to limit your children’s outdoor activities. How to expand their playground by not banning any puddle-hopping and leafkicking? The answer is simple – put on the right clothing. Words by Māra Miķelsone Photos from Depositphotos

Avoid zippers and buttons

Because of the sudden temperature changes, it will be much easier if the clothes are easy to take off, rather than buttoning and unbuttoning for several minutes. Children really do not like having long breaks between playing sessions.

Layers are fun!

It is best to dress your child in layers. Start with a t-shirt and pants. Then add on to a long-sleeved jumper and a light jacket. If it gets too hot, it is always easier to take some layers off rather than finding warmer clothing outside.

Closed-toe shoes

Respecting the previously mentioned rain, closed-toe shoes are way to go. However, do not throw on rubber boots yet – if it doesn’t rain, your child will get way too hot in those, as these boots do not really let the feet breathe. 58

Don’t forget the jacket!

We all know how tricky the beginning of autumn can be. First it’s all heat and sun, then suddenly – rainfalls and chilly winds. A jacket should not be that thick, as long as it’s waterproof. However, if a colder day is expected – turn to the ski jacket, as it’s usually both warm and protects from excess water and humidity.

Accessorize

Hat and gloves are also items worth throwing in your bag. If the air gets too chilly, it is easy to catch cold from running around without any hat on. Your kid is not a fan of hats? Very well, some ear-muffs are also a fun and creative way to keep those ears safe and sound.

Avoid hazards!

hooked on somewhere and hurt your kid, so better safe than sorry – just wear a turtleneck.

Keep a spare hoodie with you

If it gets too cold with all the layers and jackets anyway, there is one magic trick – a hoodie. It really is magic, as it has been keeping everyone warm since it was invented – both adults and children.

Don’t forget about yourself!

Dress extra warm for yourself, as we all know you won’t be running around as much as your kid. Also, add an umbrella to your packing list as there may be some standing around while the little ones play. And if there’s still some space left – no one ever has regretted taking a thermos filled with nice, hot tea on a day out.

STAY WARM AND

ENTERTAINED In need for some fall-activity inspiration? We got you! These are just some of the many various activities to try out in this chilly, yet fun season. The idea is simple – just learn to use what this season has to offer and you will not find a day to be bored. Words by Māra Miķelsone Photos from Depositphotos

Fall art

All the colours out there should not just be a view to sight. Collect the brightest leaves, roundest acorns and longest sticks – all of which can be excellent props for your child’s work of art. Just add some glue, paper and imagination.

Apple treats

Apple is one of autumn’s best treasures, so make sure you teach your kids to cherish them. First game would be filling up a bath tub or a bucket and pick them up with your mouth blindfolded. We guarantee fun for all! And not to go them to waste – make an apple pie or candy apples together for an evening treat.

Autumn 2017 |

Corn painting

Did you know that there is such a thing? And the best of all, it’s suited for both children and adults. Just take a corn cob, dip it in paint and then roll over a large piece of paper. For kids it will be a fun art experiment and for adults – quite a stressrelief process.

Pumpkin carving

One of the most fun celebrations during fall season is most definitely Halloween. Therefore, do not miss a chance to make the “scariest pumpkin” contest by carving out several pumpkins. If there are many of you – make teams, as children will need parental help anyway.

Nature walk

Fall is one season a year when so many nature treasures are just laying around the ground. Make a list with visuals of acorns, leaves, chestnuts, rowans and other elements with tick-in boxes. Give the print-out to your kid and let him find all the nature’s treasures, as well as add the list with some unexpected ones. And do not forget to take a look in page 40 of this SmartLynx issue – if you are fortunate enough to travel to one of these places during fall 2017, make sure you take your kids on a nice long walk through a place that is so much more exciting than the backyard of your house or a local forest (not that those places aren’t cool either). 

GYM DAYS ARE OVER Nowadays it is very trendy to go to the gym in the name of beauty and health. Taking selfies in front of the mirror just to show everyone how you’ve been sweating to keep in shape. But what if we told you that you don’t have to torture yourself with daily gym sessions, all while keep your body healthy and happy? We have joined for a conversation with Jekaterina Lomakina who reveals an incredible invention, saving both time and energy while still keeping you in shape. Exclusively for SmartLynx magazine

Before the “Big Reveal”, why do you think sports matter? Is it really just a trend or just the only way to get fit? It is difficult to provide an even exercise for all the muscle groups in everyday life. That subsequently leads to muscle weakening, especially when working in an office-job. It is no rare occasion when problems with spine arise, causing pain in joints because of stiffness or cramps of muscles. And low physical activity level leads to impaired circulation, which accordingly impacts all body indicators, starting from appearance to even serious health problems. Not forgetting that a weak body fails to effectively resist illnesses. All of this is true, but do we really need to go attending all the Pilates, aerobics and yoga classes, or exercising on the primitive mechanical equipment – all of which takes such a long time to bring oneself into shape? I agree! Moreover, even four hours a week in the gym do not bring any special results. 62

We do not play around, take walks, spend time with our children, run with dogs or just relax. All we do is suffer in the gym day in and day out.

Statistics, by the way, clearly state that only 7 % of those who attend the gym actually enjoy it. It’s only 7 visitors out of hundred! Do you want to know who are these people? Take a look around. These are people who do not wear hopelessness on their faces. They do not rush to work off their minimal norms just to get back home faster. They are in excellent shape; they enjoy sports right alongside their friends who are also right there in the gym, and they spend so much as 12 hours per week on the trainings. | Autumn 2017

ems fitness smart sport

Is there anything we can do to spend time with our loved ones, relax aer a tough week or just NOT sweat monotonous in a stuffy gym environment? Fortunately for many people, yes, there is an alternative to that. Clear and simple – EMS! Technology does not stand still and has transformed from the empty commercial promises, such as sticking a small device onto your stomach and expecting to start losing weight while just sitting and eating. What we have now is an innovation based on EMS – electric muscle stimulation. It means – compulsive muscle clenching with bioelectrical discharges that are skin-identical, and also repeatedly intensified. Such practice has already been popular in the world for a while now, yet the Baltic territory has just started to acquire it. And to look at it from the business point of view – it is considered as one of the most effective and quicklydeveloping small businesses. That sounds a bit confusing. In simple words – what would be the benefits of the EMS training? First of all, such training has an individual approach – an exercise plane made only by you, trainer and specific analysis of your body. It also saves a lot of time - even the shortest of trainings (20 minutes) will provide you with a noticeable result which can be compared to two-hour workout in a gym. If we get into numbers, this exercise Autumn 2017 |

activates around 93 % of the muscles at the same time – such numbers cannot be reached even by professional sportsmen, as EMS reaches the muscle layers that cannot be reached with simple workouts. Not less important, it is a completely safe workout. As exercising does not require actual force, there is absolutely no risk of injuring any body tissues. The technique of training with EMS does and incredible work with ones spine, especially if being at a desk job for a long time. Even just as little as 1 training per week (length of which is 20 minutes) will do enough to not just balance the needed activities for your body, but also to help lose some weight. And there is a pleasant bonus. You don’t have to bring any spare clothes with you, as special costume will be given to you on location. Now you know that there is no need for blindly following a fashion trend of spending all your free time while sweating in the gym. All you need to do is spend enjoyable 20 minutes with EMS workout and gain much more than from numerous hours of gym fitness. With just one workout you activate almost all body muscles – even the ones you didn’t know existed. And even three to four hours of standard exercise cannot provide such result. Never mind that – even professional athletes cannot achieve that! It’s just a few workouts in a week on EMS and no more will you have to think about keeping in shape.

Sometimes the waves are so large that they can reach up to several metres in the air and even make an impressing roaring sound.

THE FESTIVAL OF

OCTOBER

Although being mostly known for the vast varieties of beer, this festival also employs so much beer-free fun and joy that it is now one of the hottest “must-visit” events in the world. To not get confused by the heaps and leaps of activities provided during the event, we have provided a strategic guide to anyone who is about to experience this unique event we call the Oktoberfest. But first, let’s find out how it all started. Words by Māra Miķelsone Photos from Depositphotos

The Beginning

The very first Oktoberfest was celebrated during 1810, in honour of the wedding of prince of Bavaria – Ludwig I who married the princess of Saxon-Hildburghausen - Therese. All of the citizens were invited to the fields in front of the city gates where festivities were held. The field was titled Theresienwiese (known as Therese’s Meadow), named after the new Crown Princess. In 1811 the event was added with an agriculture show which still exists nowadays. Although the 70

festival was cancelled for 1813 due to Napoleonic Wars, it grew rapidly after that. Various new entertainments appeared, such as carnival booths, tree climbing and swinging attractions, bowling alleys and many more. And the parade that started in honour of Prince and Princess, continued to be an annual event – thousands of people, dressed in traditional costumes, walking through the centre of Munich right to the Oktoberfest venue. 

What’s On Oktoberfest?

Remember that the festival is not only about sitting in the tent and enjoying delicious Munich beer (although that seems fun enough). Oktoberfest is a historical event, therefore traditions follow during the whole duration of the festivities. What happens when? Find out on the Oktober-calendar. | Autumn 2017

Labietis Latvia

The Place This relatively recent Latvian brewery started up as a small pub in the close centre of the city, and has now expanded into 3 different branches. In the first brewery, one can actually see all the beer-makers in progress while sipping on the beers. 12 different delicious beverages, as well as additional types of beer already packed in bottles for take-away. This would be the very heart and soul of „Labietis” where new types of beer come in constantly. Another branch of „Labietis” can be found in one of the most unique places of Riga – the central market. After wandering through all the stalls of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products, one can chill by a glass of beer. Always available 8 types of beer, as well as the ones in the bottles for take-away. And beer brewery in Eimuri is on its way. The Beer From more than 40 different beer types, “Labietis” has divided their beers into 5 families, all named after colours. Grey beers are the ones with alcohol content till 5 % and include such names as Soho Dandy, Little Dew and Shepherd’s Boy. Yellow category is for the beverages that reach 6 % strength and include Daughter of the Kind, White Aborigine and Dawn. Red contains the beer with 6 % to 8 % alcohol contents and some of most famous names of these are Midsummer Witch, Legendary Ferryman of Riga and Indigenous Woman. Black category already contains beers stronger than 8 % and such titles as Grave Digger and Tapeworm Slayer. And then there is the purple beer category that exceeds 10 % alcohol limits and includes mysterious names, such as Bee Keeper’s Widow, Wizard and Magic Forest.

Tanker Estonia

The Place As two Estonian friends – Jaanis and Ryan – started out in a garage, experimenting with certain beer recipes, they eventually met Ants who already owned his brand titled Tanker. Three guys decided to join their forces and have now grown into one of the most recognized breweries in Estonia. As the guys describe the brewery themselves: “We like to break the rules of tradition and experiment with different raw materials, sourcing freshest ingredients from farmers to create new and interesting flavors. We are focused on the finest of details in our brewing process, techniques, and ingredient selection. At Tanker we take risks and are not afraid of experimenting to create something special. Tanker always has something new and fresh, offer refreshingly different beer with our collaborations, seasonal beers, and our solid year round core beers.” The Beer Tanker produces more than 60 different types of beer, all of them distinguished as seasonal, specials limited editions, collaborations and core beers. The core ones usually stay the same as being the most recognized, such as Checkmate, Reloaded and Sauna Session. Seasonal are made according to each season’s trends, introducing such names as Must Kapten and Kashei Bessmertniy. The Special beers are special not only by their taste, but also the names – you will not get enough of Hallucination, Party Starter, Red Rain and Skeleton Force. And the collaborations are made cooperating with different brands, having developed such names as Love Will Tear Us Apart, Silly Juice, Shadow Assassin and Surf Wax.

Sakiškių Alus Lithuania

The Place This Vilnius-based brewery, as so many others, was created from an idea of homebrewing. The concept of this brewery means to create hand-made modern beer in a hand built brewery. Linas Zakarevičius is the man behind the idea, starting from a home brewery and now expanded into an 80 square metre double storey house. Linas himself agrees that it may not be enough for a production brewery, however this facility creates the best beer ideas, using only hand-made equipment. The Beer Sakiškių beer is all about flavours and aromas, not ruined by such processes as filtering or pasteurizing. Always choosing the best and freshest ingredients available, this brewery manages to keep their beers fresh and with live yeast. All of the beers are named by style, just so everyone knows exactly what will be in the bottle. So be sure to try out names from the light beers, such as Cucumber Saison, English Bitter and Raspberry Gose to see if the name matches the taste. And the dark category will introduce you to Chipotle Porter, Coconut Milk Stout and Hazelnut Altbier.

Lehe Estonia Malduguns Latvia

The Place This Latvian brewery started out in 2013, and it was not long before Malduguns was included in the “Top 100 brewers in the world”. The creators behind are three home-brewers – Krišjānis Zeļģis, Valdis Jansons and Andris Liepiņš. Although not quite large yet, this brewery creates widelyrecognized, handmade and well-matured craft beer that is popular in both Latvia and nations outside local boundaries. The Beer Malduguns beer types are not a lot, however each and every one of them have already reached the best quality, as prepared by hand and as cautious as ever. Having named each and every one of them by various Latvian names that would be translated as Ginger Autumn, Green Pistol and Last Guest, this craft brewery will introduce one to the tastes never experienced before.

The Place This Estonian Brewery was established by two beer-enthusiasts – Tarmo and Gristel. Started out as a hobby at home, their created beer was eventually more widely requested by friends and family, thus the idea of their own business arising. In words of the pair: “We have the freedom to brew the beer we like and is an interesting smack to good beer admirer. We have no obligations to investors, which would force us to make compromise in the quality or range of products. The beer in our brewery is born out of love and not the desire to gain the market share or grow revenue.” The Beer Lehe’s beer is made following the traditions of beer-craft, using only malts, hops, water and yeast. However, the names of these traditional beers are not that conventional – have you ever tried a beverage named Are You Free Tonight?, The Jaunty Rottweiler or Time Capsule? No? Then be sure to taste these unique crafts.

Gubernija Lithuania

The Place Considered as one of the oldest breweries in Lithuania (and the largest from this list), this establishment produces its beers in building that have been listed as National Lithuanian Heritage. “We do our best in keeping up with the old traditions of brewery, naturalness and authenticity in selecting primary products and subsidiary component as well as following the requirements of traditional brewery technology.” The Beer The beer is crafted as close to the 17th century traditions as possible, offering dark, light and ale types of beer. Therefore, both the tastes and process of making them are very conventional, such as the titles of the beer. With Gubernijos Ekstra, Grand Miežių and Tamsusis Elis you will be sure of what comes into the pint.

Põhjala Estonia

Saldalus Latvia

The Place Located at a small town in Latvia – Saldus, this brewery has created its wonders from 2010. Mārtiņš Kazradzis started it out as an attempt to try brewing beer at home and it succeeded. Together with his wife, the Kazradzis family decided to turn it into a professional business of creating high-quality craft beer. The Beer Although having introduced only four types of beer, each and every one of them is as unique and rich in flavour as one will never have experienced before. So be sure to try out the fruity Flower, the rich Dark, the strong Black Wolf and the original Dunkel.

The Place It all started out with Chris Pilkington and his team who decided to create a beer with an excellent quality and in varieties some may not even imagine. They have not only reached a success in providing Estonia and Europe with outstanding craft beer, but also have started the business of Põhjala merchandise, including comfortable shirts, sweaters and glasses to enjoy the beer with. The Beer The high-quality crafts are divided into the core range, seasonal, specials and cellar series. The core includes such names as Virmalised, Rukkirääk and Must Kuld. Seasonals contain such highlights as Odravein and Saak. The special ones are also titled quite special, as the names here include Here Comes the Night Time, Batch Zero and North of Bend. And the cellar series contain quite amusing titles, such as Mel Gibson and Porridge Bullet. Who wouldn’t want to try that out?

Alsteka Lithuania

The Place This Lithuanian craft brewery has been created and developed with a unique, yet traditional approach of beer-making. The main goal of the brewery is to offer its clients with a vast variety of beers, all made with the traditions of its location – Pasvalys. Also specializing in manufacturing ales, Alsteka has made sure that its beers are available also in Kaunas, Vilnius, Šiauliai and Panevėžys. The Beer The way Alsteka approaches making of craft beer is pretty unique. With involvement of famous artists, the brewery has created such wonders as Voodoo Tune, Honey Meadow, Buck’s Salvation and Shrove Miracle. Other beers, also made with the best the brewery can offer, are divided into categories of light, strong and specials for events. The brewery also manufactures the famous Baltic non-alcoholic beverage – Kvass.

THE ROYAL

STORY

Words by Roberts Vikmanis Publicity photos

OF

BRITAIN

During times when everything royal has become so popular – we start to wonder, how did it all begin? We have decided to narrow it down to a few pages and show you how the British Monarchy came to its existence and led to one of the country’s most impressive leaders – Queen Elizabeth II. It all started with King Alfred the Great – the very first effective King of England during the time period from 871 to 899. While being the official King of Wessex, his majesty ran the country through various obstacles – London’s fall to Viking raiders, Guthrum’s Danish army invasion and their defeat, establishment of a permanent

army and navy, and most importantly – the beginning of early British History also known as the Anglo Saxon Chronicle. After the King died and got buried at Winchester, his son Edward became a king, also titled as the King Edward The Elder, reigning until 924. Taking up the title as “King of the Angles and Saxons”, this ruler saw England through

King Edward VIII 84

quite similar issues as his father. It was the beginning of re-conquest of Danelaw lands, as well as the defeat of the last great Viking army ravaging the lands of England. Buried just where his father was, Edward’s successor was his son, at the time titled as the King Athelstan, reigning until 940. King Athelstan was more widely known for making his sister to marry the Viking King of York just to strengthen his relationship with the North. He also invaded Scotland, defeating the alliance of Scots, Celts, Danes and Vikings at the Battle of Brunanburh. That gave him the title of King of all Britain. Athelstan died at Gloucester and was buried at Malmesbury. King Edmund took over the reign in 940, during his reign reestablishing the control over Northumbria and ruling a united England, also extending his reign into the South of Scotland. King Edmund witnessed a tragic death as he was murdered at a party in Pucklechurch. After his brother’s slightly short reign, his brother Edred took over and witnessed the expulsion of the last Danish king of York. And just a year after, his life also came to an end. The short-span reigns continued, as in | Autumn 2017

Royal Story smart history

King George VI 955 King Edwy was crowned at Kingstonupon-Thames. During his reign, Mercians and Northumbrians rebelled against the King, and just a few years later the King also witnessed his death. King Edgar, also known as Edgar King of Mercia and Northumbria, becomes the King of all England. During his reign, in 965, one of the most historical places was founded – Westminster Abbey. Just as the Northern Kings submitted to King Edgar at Chester, Edgar died at Winchester. Right after, the 13year old King Edward The Martyr became the successor to the King’s title. However, just 3 years into his reign, King Edward The Martyr was murdered at Corfe Castle. Following the tragic death of his halfbrother, Aethelred became the King Aethelred II The Unready, finally having a longer reign than his predecessors. And just as they, he also had the chance to fight against Danes, just as they renewed their raids on England. His Majesty ordered a massacre of Danish settlers. However, the Danes were ready as they raided Kent, organized the burning of Cantenbury Cathedral and murdering of Archbishop Alphege. Just as the King Sweyn Forkbeard of Denmark lands in England and is proclaimed the king, Aethelred fleed to Normandy and was recalled as the King. His son, King Edmund II Ironside becomes the King. During the Battle of Abingdon, Edmund was defeated by King Canute II of Denmark. They came to an agreement where the kingdom was divided in two – Canute took the land of North of the Thames and Edmund – the South. The same year, Edmund was assassinated and Canute Autumn 2017 |

took over England. King Canute married the widow of King Aethelred II – Emma of Normandy. Canute divided England into 4 earldoms, as well as became the King of Norway. Just after his death, the whole Northern European Empire begins to disintegrate. Canute’s illegitimate son King Harold I Harefoot assumes the throne from his half-brother, Harthacanute, who at the time was away fighting in Denmark. Five years into the reign, Harold dies and the throne goes to the King Harthacanute, just as initially anticipated. However, just after two years, Harthacanute dies and the throne goes to the rightful heir – the son of Aethelred II. King Edward The Confessor married Edith, daughter of Earl Godwin of Wessex. However, after quarrelling with Godwin, he banishes the whole Godwin family from England. Right after, Edward promises the throne to William, Duke of Normandy. However, after King Edward The Confessor died, the throne went to the legitimate successor Harold Godwinson. King Harold II, though, had one of the shortest reigns in the history, as during the very same year of coronation, he was killed at the Battle of Hastings. Even shorter was the reign of his grandson Edmund II, who reigned for a few weeks just before submitting to the William of Normandy. During the reign of King William I The Conqueror, works on the Tower of London begun. Also, the Norman Cathedral of Winchester began its construction. After the death of the King, King William II Rufus came into the throne. As he was killed by an arrow while hunting in the New Forest,

King Henry I succeeded as a ruler. Robert of Normandy decided to invade England in order to throw his brother from the throne, thus a war breaks between the two. As Henry died of food poisoning in France, King Stephen usurped the crown from Henry’s daughter Matilda. After reaching an agreement with Matilda’s son Henry Plantagenet, after Stephen’s death, King Henry II becomes the ruler. Right after him, King Richard I The Lion Heart came in the picture. Following his capture by the Emperor of Germany and reaching a release after a ransom of 100 000 marks, King Richard went to France, never to see his homeland again. After the death of his brother, King John succeeds to the throne. After quite a long quarrel with the Pope and fleeing North, John died and King Henry III came into the throne. Being just 9, he actually witnessed a long run ahead of him with

prospects and her involvement into the art of theatre, she dies and King James I becomes the King of England. During his reign, James managed to unite the thrones of Scotland and England. After the death of his father, King Charles I comes into the throne. After being executed, England was followed by an 11-year long rule of the Parliament. After that, King Charles II becomes the king. His successor was his brother, King James II. After he abdicated and fled to exile in France, King William III and Queen Mary II became the joint King and Queen. In 1964 Queen Mary died, and 1702 witnessed the death of the King as well. After succeeding her brother, Queen Anne became as the ruler. After leading England into the war with France and transferring the seat of Scottish government to London, Anne dies in 1714, and her distant cousin George becomes the King George I. His son succeeds him as the King George II, and in succession – his grandson becomes King George III in 1760. After spending 9 years as the Prince Regent for his blind and deranged father, King George IV finally came into the reign in 1820. King’s successor was his brother, titled as King William IV. Witnessing the opening of the new London Bridge, as well as cholera spreads during 1832, the King died and was succeeded by the very Queen Victoria I. Having led a legendary reign, as well as introduced the concept of all things Victorian, she died aged 81 and her throne was given to her son – King Edward VII. Living in his mother’s shadow for a while, the King died in 1910 and the throne went to his son King George V. After witnessing the World War I, the King died in 1936 and his son – King Edward VIII came into the reign. However, on the wish to marry Mrs Wallis Simpson, he took the choice of renouncing the throne for himself and all of his descendants. His reign subsequently went to his brother – King George VI. Having led the country through the brutal times of the World War II, the king died in 1952 and his throne went to Queen Elizabeth II, whose story is still being written.

COOKING FOR

CHILDREN WITH

CHILDREN

Māris has been working in aviation for 10 years and almost as much in the field of cooking. Six years in, while working in a restaurant, Māris decided to take upon a challenge – to start cooking classes for children. As Māris regards himself - “We do not teach how to cook. We teach how to fall in love with cooking.”

Why did you choose teaching children?

It’s simple – because children love to learn and they actually want to do it. And the main thing is – such classes are very good for them. I can see how children get free and relaxed, as we allow them to cook in the way they feel most comfortable. It is also so motivating to see how excited they are when they learn to do something new. And it’s even the simplest of things, like learning how to cut tomatoes. They get hooked and start doing it with genuine enthusiasm.

What would be the most difficult thing about teaching kids as young as even 6? Well, it was challenging in the beginning, as communicating with children really isn’t the same as with adults. There was some getting used to, but now I find myself 90

feeling better while being around the joyfulness of kids. Children from 6 to 9 – they are mostly interested in products we use. Youth from ages 10 to 14 are interested in everything, starting from the products, processes and, of course, the results.

How about adapting to children’s needs, wishes, and also dietary restrictions?

We always take into account kids’ and their parents’ restrictions and requirements. We organize classes so that they would be suitable for each kid, not leaving anyone out and more importantly – not making them cook or eat something they wouldn’t want. Especially when we organize individual classes. So all in all – we usually find common language to make the classes the best way we can.

| Autumn 2017

Cooking With Children smartlynx

What would be the most important thing children learn in these classes? Except for becoming great cooks, of course. We always teach children to improvise. I, myself, never cook by a certain recipe and teach kids the same thing. Because they should be able to go by their sense, rather than by a book that sort of restricts them. We also spend quite some time to teach children about the presentation of food. It

does not necessarily mean that they have to prepare a dish according to restaurant standards. Not at all, as we always allow the children to express their creativity not only with making food, but also with presenting it. And it is amazing to see the results of each kid, as they are all different and unique. And what is important to note – we always use products that are healthy, seasonal and of course – contain no chemicals. It

is fun sometimes to teach children that you do not need any food colours, rather just natural things – until the classes they wouldn’t even think of what bright colours they can get from such things as spinach, blackcurrant and various fruit available in many gardens. Therefore, I like to think that we teach them about all the basics of healthy food and its availability in local markets, gardens and all around in the nature.

Who is Māris?

What do the cooking classes offer?

• Master classes for children, currently held on Sundays • At the end of the year – starting classes for children under 6 • Master classes for parties • Individual master classes • Menu preparation Autumn 2017 |

• Chef of children’s culinary school • Flight attendant at SmartLynx Airlines • Judge for kayaking and rowing championships • A man who goes by the famous Paul Bocuse’s saying: “Life is a small kitchen, on which we prepare dishes called happiness. In this kitchen we are our own chefs, and it’s up to us to decide what ingredients we will add to our dishes. It is important to remember that there is no universal recipe, so create, try something new. And, maybe, then, in the end, the reward will be waiting for you.” 91

Smart Interns smartlynx

SMART

INTERNS

This summer has been particularly busy at SmartLynx Airlines as we were joined by fantastic interns from different backgrounds. Each learning the field they are most passionate about, these young people are successfully climbing the career ladder of the aviation industry.

We have gathered some of them to tell us and you – passengers about what’s it like to be an intern at SmartLynx Airlines. Find out about their daily tasks, most interesting and brightest moments while being part of the SmartLynx team, as well as their own personal achievements during the internship. In other words – meet the Smart Interns.

traveling. My daily tasks in financial department of the company are to receive different invoices and to put them into the system for further processing. The most interesting part of my internship is to communicate with different people from various departments, to get to know about things they are doing at work. I have learned how to use various professional programmes that will be useful for my future career. I would really love to connect my future with aviation, because it is very interesting to learn something new every day. The most interesting part of my internship is to communicate with different people from various departments.

Kristofers Granats

Anastasija Boldaveska

I am a third year student of Banku Augstskola. Currently, I am obtaining a Bachelor’s degree of Business and Finance. My previous experience at the seaport brought me exposure to the accounting services, where I was working as an accountant assistant. I have chosen SmartLynx for my internship because I am interested in aviation and 92

At the moment I’m studying in Riga State Gymnasium No.1, in 12th grade. I also received a private pilot license and at the moment I’m working on the Airline Transport Pilot License Course in Riga, Latvia and building up my flight hours. Last year I worked in the Riga International airport in Havas for 3 months. It was a great learning experience on how to cooperate with people from different nations and work as a team. SmartLynx Airlines had always been a wellknown brand and a respectable company in Latvian aviation community. I wanted to

have an insight in airline’s everyday life, so I decided to join this company and do my best each day to help out and learn a thing or two. As I work in the Safety Department, each day is different- full of surprises. I could not specify one task, but most of the work I do is related to operating manuals and standards. Aviation is a very well-regulated industry, it’s important to make sure that company follows latest regulations and recommendations. I love almost every aspect of my job. I enjoy having a challenge each and every day, as well as having the opportunity to work together with professionals from various nations. The achievement with SmartLynx was the fact that I received positive feedback about the work from my colleagues. It is a pleasure to realize that you have the power to solve problems and to facilitate the work for other people. The most important thing I learned this summer is the fact that every problem is solvable. If it is not solvable- it’s not a problem! It is important to take matters with ease and be patient. At the moment I’m completely sure about my future in aviation. In following years I would like to finish the flight training and start working for an airline as a first officer. Next year, however, I would like to continue my journey in office and join Operations | Autumn 2017

mutual trust with clients, colleagues and passengers are the key elements for a long term success of an airline. For my personal growth the key takeaway is that you should always be critical towards your knowledge and get as many opinions as possible to achieve the best possible result. My future career will continue to be in aviation. I have been hired and will continue my employment in the role of Commercial Manager at SmartLynx. Aviation is my passion, so the most interesting part of my internship is the ability to learn from passionate, friendly, proactive and professional colleagues with tremendous experience and knowledge in aviation.

Communication with personnel and more experienced colleagues was very forthcoming and responsive. I appreciate the kind attitude of the employees towards the “new ones”.

Davis Nabutovskis

I went to school at Riga State Gymnasium No. 1 after which I started studying Business and Economics at Stockholm School of Economics in Riga. Some of my professional experiences so far include running a fin-tech start-up, working for a music industry start-up and being an intern at airBaltic. The choice for SmartLynx was based on an opportunity. A recruiting agent offered me to apply for a full time job at SmartLynx even though I did not yet have the required level of experience. During the job interview at SmartLynx it was agreed that I would first try it as an intern at the Commercial Department. Commercial Department is responsible for all the revenue of SmartLynx. Daily tasks that I do at SmartLynx are connected with focus on both present and future revenue. I am learning the complexities of B2B ACMI (Business to Business Aircraft Crew Maintenance and Insurance) Sales and am researching new potential markets for our operations and targeting potential future customers. Aviation is my passion, so the most interesting part of my internship is the ability to learn from passionate, friendly, proactive and professional colleagues with tremendous experience and knowledge in aviation. I have an entrepreneurial and problem solving mind-set with many ideas, so my main achievement has been to already implement some of my ideas in real life. Professionally I learned that reputation and Autumn 2017 |

I believe that one of the most interesting parts of my internship was the excursion in RIX airport as a part of personnel, and not as a passenger. We also visited maintenance storage facility which was quite an interesting experience to have. Every day I learn something new in this internship. In this time period I have been in an auditor role, participated in various meetings. I can also improve my English skills during my stay here. Before my internship I had zero knowledge in aviation, now I feel I have grown because I now start to understand aviation world more – all the processes, terms, regulations etc. If answering the question on whether I consider my future career in aviation – well, I have already been working in two different departments, so there is still a place to climb the ladder even further.

Madara Sidra-Lapinska

Sintija Beate Boldisovica

I am a third year student in BA school of business and finance, studying innovation and product development of business. In SmartLynx I got my first professional work experience. Previous year I worked in finance department. I chose to spend my internship at SmartLynx because it offers a very useful first work experience. Communication with personnel and more experienced colleagues was very forthcoming and responsive. I appreciate the kind attitude of the employees towards the “new ones”. Positive and motivated working atmosphere in the office. I like to take on a new challenge, that’s why I am currently an intern at safety and security department. My daily tasks during the internship are doing safety and security reports as a Coordinator at Security and Safety Department, as well as preparing other reports and supervise report work/follow-up process.

I have graduated University of Latvia and got Professional Bachelor’s Degree in E-business and logistics management, This is my second internship in SmartLynx Logistics department. During the studies, I also gained some experience in IT field as a web designer. I think SmartLynx Airlines is the best place for internship if you want to improve yourself in aviation field and receive great experience. I do different kinds of reports, daily routine tasks and e-mail distribution. My internship at SmartLynx is not just a way to get a check-mark in your internship list, but rather a way to get unlimited experience to your future opportunities. During the internship I have learned how to organize my job as effective as possible to accomplish all set tasks. There are a lot of things that I have learned about logistics, which are impossible to learn in books or courses. I see my future in logistics and planning, however only the time will show if it be in aviation or in other industry. My internship at SmartLynx is not just a way to get a check-mark in your internship list, but rather a way to get unlimited experience to your future opportunities. 93

MYTHS AND FEAR-BREAKING FACTS Get some more knowledge on “plane stuff” with these fun facts.

1. Even the strongest of turbulences is in no way an indicator to danger. The only thing that is in danger of dropping to the ground is your drink. 2. There is no lightning that could cause any damage to the plane, as they all are built to withstand such strikes. The material of the plane itself protects you already. 3. If you suddenly get scared of the position the plane’s wings are in – upward – do not be alarmed. They are in such way because it makes the plane more aerodynamic and helps to reduce such things as turbulence or dragging during take-off and landing. 4. Just because the plane takes a longer time to reach its destination as usual, it does not mean that there is something wrong. It is no rare occasion when such factors as headwind and tailwind appear, actually slowing down the plane or just the opposite – helps to propel the plane even faster. 5. The red and green light on the each side of the plane is no warning – they have been placed like that just to let the other plane crossing your path know which direction the other vessel is going to. 6. We have all heard about the “fact” of all the toilet waste going right out of the plane and onto someone’s head. Not true. All of the waste is sucked down and collected in special waste tanks that are emptied only at the airport. 7. Just because you don’t seem to like the food on board, may not be airline’s fault at all. It has been scientifically proven that the senses of taste actually changes a lot while human is in air. 8. No! You cannot get sucked into the airplane’s toilet. The vacuum system installed in it (as fearful is the sound it makes) is a closed one and works only near the mouth of the disposal pipe.

Clothes: Baggy clothes are best in the air. Try not to wear any tight – fitting clothes, loosen top buttons, belts and shoelaces and remove tight socks. Circulation: Circulation of blood is helped if you try not to cross your legs or ankles for long periods of time. Elastic support socks or stockings may help. From time to time it is good to stand up and make a little walk or make some exercises. Remember that even the smallest movements help with blood circulations, so you can also do some stretching while seated.
