Lithuanian Independence Day
FebruAry 16th, lithuAniA This is the date when Lithuania first declared its independence from Czarist Russia on February 16, 1918. It stayed such until the Occupation by the Soviet powers in 1940. Els Enfarinats
December 28th, Alicante, Spain This annual festival is part of celebrations related to the Day of the Innocents. The title of this festival literally means “the breaded ones” or more commonly known as “the floured ones”. Participants of the festival dress in military outfits, battling with flour and eggs. This participant part is considered as a direct opposition to a group of people who overtake the city for one day and make up ridiculous laws, breaking of which costs dearly. However, all ends well each year since the very beginning of this mock-up.

Mevlana Whirling Dervishes
December 7th - 17th, Konya, Turkey This seemingly dizzy spinning around is based on teachings practised by 13th-century poet named Rumi. The idea of those men in white robes just spinning around is to find their inner peace through whirling. Rumi himself considers the whirling as a method to achieve the so called “divine harmony”. Furthermore, this festival will educate its guests on modern Islam traditions and culture.
Krampusnacht
December 5th, Tyrol, Austria Some have Grinch, but others something far scarier – a mythical horned creature which is usually considered as half-goat and half-daemon, titled the Krampus. Arriving with chain and bells, he is ready to visit all the naughty children with birch sticks in his hand and take them to the underworld. Never mind the horrific character, Austrians celebrate Krampus by parading through the streets whilst carrying torches and whipping other people with stick bundles. What a wonderful way to await Christmas time.
Berlin Film Festival
February 15th – 24th, Berlin, Germany One of the biggest names in the cinema world, this festival was founded in the very far 1951. It was an initiative of US Army Film officer Oscar Martay who persuaded the American Military to fund this festival. Berlinale shows around 400 movies in total, most of them being produced in European countries. Yet the genre variety one will find here is the widest. The whole programme is sectioned in international cinema, independent and art house, films for younger audiences, new discoveries, experimental cinematography and many more. | Winter 2017/2018

Considered as one of the most elegant Carnivals in the world, this event turns the city into an alluring platform for spectacles and performances of a lifetime. The very first Venice Carnival took place in 1162 and reached its very peak in the 18th century when Venice was titled as the pleasure capital of Europe. And the masks worn at the event are the ones that disguise the participants as they take upon their alter-egos and let go of simple and normal.

This year’s line-up includes such names as Andrew Maxwell, Nick Cody, Terry Alderton and many more. But comedy is not the only thing, as mountain races also take place. And moreover, even the comedians dressed in funny costumes show off their skills of sporting through the blissful snow of Alps.
Kurentovanje Carnival
FebruAry 2nD – 13th, lJublJAnA, sloVeniA This international carnival in Ptuj is an annual event which started out with pagan mysticism. The idea of the carnival is to chase away the winter and welcome spring to the town. The main figure of the event is Kurent who is dressed in sheepskin garments holding wooden clubs with hedgehog skins. They are the leading symbols who drive away winter and bring in everything that’s good about springtime. Various ethnographic parades are performed during daytime and concerts during nights. Much fun guaranteed!

Battle of the Oranges

It started as an uprising of commoners against an oppressive ruler, and oranges were the weapons they fought with. And now it has transformed into an annual must-visit event that recreates the historic fight between Ivrea’s mean lord and townspeople. SPORTS
Winter Olympics 2018 will feature 15 sports included in the total of 102 events. Brand new disciplines in existing sports are included in this edition’s games – big air snowboarding, mixed doubles curling, mass start speed skating and mixed team alpine skiing. The main venues the sports will take place will be on the slopes and on ice. Slopes will gather athletes from alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, Nordic combined, ski jumping and snowboard. Whereas ice will be devoted to curling, bobsled, figure skating, hockey, luge, short track, skeleton and speed skating.
TRADITIONS
Official mascots for the Winter Olympics 2018 are two animals - Soohorang (a white tiger) and Bandabi (an Asiatic black bear). Soohorang has long been considered as Korea’s guardian animal – “Sooho” is Korean for “protection” and “Rang” is derived from the word “tiger”. The traditional torch will be exactly 700 milimetres long which represents the altitude of PyeongChang – 700 metres above sea level. It will be toned with the main colours of the county – white and gold, and the five-pronged shape of torch’s flame is founded on the Korean symbol for the city of PyeongChang. Uniform cap will be decorated with a 5-angled shape in the middle, as to represent the spirit of sports, connecting 18
races, nations, religions, genders, cultures and the five continents. As organizers have declared – “United by a common passion for the Games!” The emblem of the Games 2018 has unified several concepts. The first character of the emblem represents a gathering place where heaven, earth and human are in harmony, also called the three elements of Cheonji-in. The second character is the symbol of ice and snow. Connecting the dots, the whole emblem displays a huge gathering of different people from around the world to celebrate the Olympic Winter Games, all taking place in the peaceful PyeongChang. “A square where the earth meets the sky, and where athletes excel in snow or on ice - that’s where everyone will celebrate the world’s biggest winter festival in 2018, ” such are the words from the organizers.
MEDALS
In total, 259 sets of medals have been made, ranging in weight from 586 grams (gold) and 493 grams (bronze). The medals are supposed to reflect the traditions and culture of the host nation, therefore the design for these were inspired the texture of tree trunks. On the front of it Olympic rings and dynamic diagonal lines are displayed, reflecting both the history of the Games and the determined nature of the participants. On the back of the medal, technical information is displayed – discipline, event and the PyeongChang emblem. Even the ribbon, onto which the medal hangs, has been created using a traditional South Korean fabric – gapsa. They have also been embroidered with Hangeul patterns.

and Madge Syers won their individual titles in the disciplines. Later on it was proposed to organize a whole week of winter sports, added to the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, however the idea was rejected. The plan was revisited and accepted for the 1916 Summer Olympics in Berlin but unfortunately the Games were cancelled after the outbreak of World War II.
HISTORY
The official predecessor of Winter Olympic Games was the Nordic Games, organised by General Viktor Gustaf Balck in Stockholm, Sweden. First Nordic Games were held in 1901, then in 1903, 1905 and every fourth year thereafter, just until 1926. Balck was determined to add winter sports to the Olympic programme, as Pierre de Coubertin – founder of the Olympic Games – was a close friend of his. In 1908 Summer Olympics in London, four figure skating events were added to the Games. A 10-time world champion Ulrich Salchow
20
A few years later, 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp returned with the added winter disciplines – figure skating and ice-hockey tournament. And in 1924 Summer Games in France, it was decided that the host nation would also organize a special “International Winter Sports Week”, choosing Chamonix as the host city. Thus, the very first Winter Olympic Games were held in 1924 in Chamonix, AuvergneRhône-Alpes, France. More than 250 athletes competed in 16 events, and 28 medals were won by Finnish and Norwegian athletes.
The Games were held every 4 years up until 1936, canceled for a while due to World War II. After then, next Games followed only in 1948, and from that point on Winter Olympics resumed the chronology of every 4 years, the only exception being Lillehammer Games 1994, held only 2 years after the previous Olympics.
THE HOST
PyeongChang holds a slogan “Happy 700 PyeongChang” which is taken from the city’s elevation of 700 metres above the sea level. If sightseeing around the location, make sure to visit the famous Buddhist temple Woljeongsa which is located on the eastern slopes of Odasean. This is the central temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and was founded in 643 by the Silla monk Jajang. Some of the properties to have been held by the temple are statues of Gautama Buddha and Bodhisattva, as well as Saripagoda – a 9-storey octagonal, believed to be constructed in the 10th century.

THE CITY
OF PEACE The city of Sharm El Sheikh is located in the south of Sinai Peninsula, right on the coast along the Red Sea. As the Peninsula is a mountain range which is parted from the sea by a flat desert strip, the sight witnessed in the city itself is incredible. Usually regarded as the city of peace because of the numerous peace conferences it has hosted, Sharm offers the best experiences for its visitors - exploring the desert by riding with a camel, walking through secret valleys, relaxing at oasis and sleeping under the stars – it sounds like a dream but is actually true when visiting Sharm El Sheikh. HISTORY Although quite short, the city’s history is unique, as for centuries it was a merely-inhabited fishing village and nothing more. What is even more interesting – the city reached its peak as a hot tourist destination while being occupied by Israel. It actually has been occupied by the country two times, just as much as going back to Egypt’s powers. Under the Ottoman rule the city was referred to as Şarm-üş Şeyh, and during the second Israel occupation between 1967 and 1982 it was known as Ofira.

TASTE OF SHARM
Egyptian cuisine is something of unique taste, often compared to the food of Eastern Mediterranean. Some of the most famous dishes to try when in Egypt are definitely Fatta, Kushari, Ful Medames, Halawa and Konafah. So when in such local restaurants as El Masrien, Koshary El Sheikh or Fairuz, do not hesitate to ask for these. And if you do crave Egyptian interpretation of international cuisine, try some quality Indian in Rangoli or Italian food in Pomodoro or Al Fanar. For celebration we would suggest some finer diner, such as La Fleur, Caligula Hot Rock or L’entrecote Steak House. And how about some authentic Thai food at the White Elephant Thai Restaurant and Sushi Bar? If you look for more than just a restaurant, The Lounge at Mall 6 is the place to be on Thursday nights – eating, drinking and singing karaoke. | Winter 2017/2018

Naama Bay
WHAT DOES IT OFFER? Ras Mohammed National Park The park houses not only some of the world’s most amazing diving sites, but also snorkelling in a beautiful beach of this incredible peninsula. The beaches worth visiting are Old Quay Bay and Agaba Beach. And after a swim or dive at one of these beaches, do not forget to head down to the Shark Observatory cliff to take in a breathtaking view of the both sides of the Red Sea. Sharm Old Market Oh, what shopping one will do at this magnificent bazaar. Also known as Sharm al-Maya, this market is filled with people buzzing throughout small stands of spices, shisha pipes, Arabic lamps and even traditional woodwork. The venue also provides various cafes and restaurants, therefore offering the visitors an all-day experience. Naama Bay This would be the very centre of the city’s resort life. Stretching through a white sand beach and palm trees, the Bay provides fantastic experience for the vacationers. When finishing up a day beside the beach - sunbathing in the loungers and enjoying delicious treats at the beachside cafes – one can have a stroll at the promenade that rims the entire beach area. Shark’s Bay Yolanda Reef As for diving, Yolanda Reef is the way to go as this is one of the most popular diving sites. And besides that, there is also a historical value added to the site – many people come here to see the remains of an old Cypriot ship Yolanda. To explore a wreck dive is something magnificent to see – it’s like swimming through a fish aquarium filled with coral walls and old ship remains, only this time - it’s for people as well! Shark’s Bay The bay houses some of the most luxurious five-star resorts and is known for its vibe of tranquillity. And not to miss out on the city life, the area beside it offers a visit to the recently developed Soho Square Centre where entertainment selection of restaurants, bars and shops is offered. Nabq Protectorate Wherever you choose to attend, do not miss this amazing venue. Home to the world’s most northerly mangrove forest, the landscape here is full of sand dunes, lonely beaches and arak bushes. In a few words – Egypt’s wilderness in its best. After resort sites and lying in beaches, this place will truly provide a different experience.
Al Sahab Mosque Alf Leila Wa Leila Aside from the accommodation it offers, this impressive entertainment centre houses the Museum of Ancient Egyptian Heritage. The museum offers an intricate insight into the ancient civilization of Egypt and even some art and crafts from the period. In the resort one will find the Fantasia Show as one of the centrepieces of the complex – with the full performances of snake and belly dancing, as well as Sindbad flying on red carpet. And to finish up with these and even more activities, such as sport and music listening, head down to one of the restaurants to enjoy a nice meal after an even nicer day. Al Sahab Mosque This innovative mosque has been designed by Egyptian architect Fouad Tawfik Hafez who intricately combined the architecture and interior design with elements of Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman. The mosque was initially supposed to be founded in January 2011, yet the events of revolution suspended the works and pushed the date to March, 2017. So the building is very new and has spiked up the tourist interest quite swiftly. Although some consider it as “too much”, no unimpressed person has ever walked out of this spectacular building.

DIVING THROUGH SHARM EL SHEIKH Sharm El Sheikh is not just for the tourists who want to find a resort to lay and enjoy the sun at. The city also offers some of the greatest diving spots, and although the city provides a vast variety of such spots, there are some that stand out. Like Ras Um Sid Beach and Reef which not only provides a fantastic coral reef experience, but is also perfect for the beginner divers. Jackson Reef is considered as the premium diving site where vast selection of large fish and even sharks can be sighted, as well as the wreck 26
of Lara. If you are more of an experienced diver, you will want to visit the Thomas Reef. It houses most colourful soft corals and various fish species, all combining an incredible experience of the abundance of sea life. And Laguna would be an excellent diving site to see the most clown fish in one area, so Nemo fans – you know where to head. Straits of Tiran is a venue only accessible by boat and asks for good diving skills as unpredictable currents visit the site quite often.

START YOUNG Although starting up your own business is a success itself during any age, doing that in your early 20s – that’s something of an achievement. So here are some of the brightest examples of how age really does not stand in a way of success.
Mark Zuckerberg at 20 VAlue: $73.8 billion
By now, everyone in the world should know who this American entrepreneur is. Mark Zuckerberg co-founded the very core of social network platforms – Facebook. He started the whole thing off in college, initially for the sole purpose of entertainment. Who would have known that this little thing made aside would make him a multi-billionaire?

We all have used it – Mozilla Firefox. And the guy who made it real is an American software developer Blake Ross. And he did so at the young age of 25. Other than that, he has also been nominated for the very prestige “Rave Award” by the Wired Magazine. Blake also was the co-founder of “Parakey” which eventually was bought out by Zuckerberg’s treasure – “Facebook”.
The source of up-scale news on technology, digital culture and entertainment is Mashable. And it was founded by a young Peter Cashmore in 2005. Peter has even been included in the Forbes Magazine’s “30 under 30”. Currently his site has reached over 10 million readers monthly and does not plan to stop at that.
Can you even imagine starting up a business when only 14 years old? That’s how Sean Belnick theoretically started up his. When spending many days in his room, he came up with the idea of “Bizchair”. It began as selling a few office chairs, and eventually turned into a large company selling its production to such giants as Microsoft and Google.

At the very young age of 18 years, Aaron Levie created a website as a part of college business project. Yet the website Box. net managed to prove its potential, so it was brought further than college. Aaron’s business is a content management platform that provides solutions such as sharing and accessing files on devices, as well as solving more sophisticated business challenges.
Who hasn’t used the famous Tumblr at least once? Well, thank David Karp for it, as he created the site in 2007 with a goal to help people share practically everything online. And to add more to David’s worth, he was named the Best Young Tech Entrepreneur by BusinessWeek in 2009. It is estimated that currently Tumblr hosts approximately 375 million blogs.
Sean Whalen introduced the world to the AlterG treadmill which is intended for using in anti-gravity conditions. The road also known as the “Troll Ladder” was opened in 1936 after the total of 8-year construction. Located 853 metres above the sea level, the road steeps in the average grade of 9 percent. One of the most amazing beauties of this road is the Stigfossen waterfall which mesmerizingly runs down alongside the mountain, and it can be crossed by a small bridge on the way through the road.
Col de l’Iseran
Location: Savoie, France Being as one of the steepest roads, this mountain pass in the Alps can elevate up to a maximum of 12 % grade, reaching over 2743 metres in height. The road connects the valley of Isère and the valley od Arc River. Its location has been used for including the pass as one of the segments in Tour d’France races. And not one of the easiest ones as well, as cyclists race up to 914 metres in just over 15 kilometres.
Nordschleife
Location: Nürburg, Germany This road adjoins both public and Grand Prix race access, thus being of interest to many audiences. The pass serves as one of the tracks at the Nurburgring motosports complex, and is considered as one of the most terrifying race tracks for true motorsports enthusiasts. Reaching through the Eifel forests and surprising the drivers with steep inclines and changing road surfaces, this route really is something of an Franche-Comte, Budapest, experience. iSTORY It’s been 10 years since we first laid our hands on a miraculous invention titled iPhone, as now the brand new iPhone X is in markets, surprising the consumers with yet another genius invention by Apple. Who would’ve known that this seemingly simple phone would be a leader in its market for years to come? Yet, like all other revolutionary things, this one also has its history, and it all began with iPhone 3. Words by Gustavs Reinholds Publicity photoes
iCREATION
Steve Jobs is the one and only inventor of iPhone, from the very first moments he asked Apple Inc. engineers to research the use of touchscreen. A phone that was nearly all screen was something of an innovation at that time. How is it possible – no buttons to dial a number? And little did we know that calling and messaging would be only trivial use for a modern phone. So how did iPhone come to existence? It all started with Apple’s first big hit – iPod. It is often considered that the combination of iPod hardware and iTunes software sort of created the initial concept of iPhone. After creating a portable music player, people started to expect more and more from this revolutionary company. However, at the Apple management, mobile phones were not initial plans of the company, as they considered them as useless and terrible. However, few years in popularity, iPod started to be threatened by new phones that could play MP3s. So logically, 42
consumers would choose a device that could do more things. And that is when the collaboration between Apple and Motorola happened, that resulted in a phone titled ROKR E1 – the first mobile phone that used iTunes. During that time, Jobs was gathering all the necessary information on the device itself, trying to figure out how to pursue the design of Motorola’s phone that would be in the complete control of Apple. Soon enough, the collaboration discontinued and Apple released a brand new version of iTunes. It promised to be connected to an innovative mobile phone which could display pictures and videos, as well as would support third-party applications using the Safari engine. So being inspired by the concept of multimedia plus smartphone product, Steve Jobs announced the very first iPhone on January 9, 2007, and on June 29, iPhone was released.
First Apple iPhones were sold only with “AT&T” – American multinational telecommunications conglomerate contracts within the United States. Steve Jobs reached an agreement that they would be iPhone’s only carrier, and clientele could use it with other carriers only if they managed to unlock the phone. That, however, started to lash out in various court cases, after one of which the court barred Apple from selling their phones with a software lock. Gradually, the phone became accessible in all the countries and shook the world of technology to its cores. iPhone was an invention of a lifetime, after which many other brands have followed. Some even say that technology-wise some other brands have overpowered iPhone, however there is no arguing in the massive effect of Apple philosophy and the joy it brings to people.

Quite a visual impression
As we already concluded, the car has experienced quite a load of visual changes. The “nostrils” of the front have become much larger. And the “nose” itself has been put higher, thus creating a power-like position of the car. It now looks as a strong wrestler of sort. If earlier the looks of the previous models created a more angry impression then now BMW looks as if ready for a fight with his head held high. As a true, athletic and serious wrestler.
I’ll have the extra large BMW!
We now sit in a brand new BMW X3 with the manufacturer number G01. And we can conclude immediately that this model is much larger than the previous one. Yet it is not only the dimensions of the car, but also the wheel base which is about 5 – 6 centimetres longer. The car has been based on the BMW CLAR platform with combined technical solutions from 5th and 7th series. And this would be 48
Also a large difference from the previous models, BMW designers have decided to give up something of a defining character of BMW – the round fog lights in the front. This X3 will have elongate fog lights. Earlier it was something that differed BMWs from the other sub-type vehicles, but this is also going to be a progressive and recognized update. the car where we feel the CLAR component benefits as quite a lot has been taken over from both series. If I’m not mistaken, then this car already has different assisting components in its standard package – lane, brake and parking assistants. It has various adaptations to the intelligent safety system that foresee pedestrians that could step in front of the car. And this smart system will try to react before the driver, and warn him to avoid unpredictable situations.
Some other visual changes that everyone will notice are in the tyre arches which have been adapted to much larger tyres and wheel rims. The smallest possible wheel size for this model will be R18. And that will be something that puts quite a hole in one’s pocket when it will be time for changing the tyres for winter season. So my advice would be to talk to the dealer when purchasing the car, so that he could help you find some cost-effective solutions. | Winter 2017/2018

Let’s rock’n’drive!
I have driven an X3 model before, yet this feels so much larger. However, in no way it affects the drivability of the vehicle. It does not seem to be less controllable, quite the opposite really – it seems more agile, mobile and easier to steer. And the way BMW engineers achieved it is the power proportions between both of the axles. When entering the highway we already have the feeling that all of the others are a bit slower. And when crossing some potholes or rails, we do not feel anything under the car. It takes quite a smooth leap over such obstacles. And the excellent suspension system also does its job well, so no surprises here. I do, however, have to get used to the front bonnet - with the newly designed extension in the front, there is some getting used to the frontal dimensions of the car. Although the vehicle has such intelligent systems that the driver doesn’t even need to feel the car that much – it will warn about any danger ahead of the road. It hears, sees and feels everything we need to know. We can also turn on the Sport mode and see how beautifully the whole front panel turns red. That gives us a more intense and aggressive look, making the driver to play a bit with the speed. And when doing that, Winter 2017/2018 |
testing brakes should not be forgotten – for such a car and the size of the tyres, brake support works pretty well.
speeding-up. I do not have to worry about not being able to outrun even some of the speediest vehicles.
The feel of a roaring engine
One has to remember that all of the models will be four-wheel-drive and equipped with the 8 speed Steptronic transmission. And the top version – BMW X3 M40i – will also be accompanied with the launch control system which we have already seen on some other impressive newcomers.
What we have here is the 2.0D engine version. To say that something is missing because of that would be wrong. In the current conditions around us, this is more than enough. When stepping harder on the accelerator pedal, typical BMW feeling appears – in no way I have to worry about

Interior wonders of BMW
In the interior we see M package which additionally provides us with some very nice features, such as sports seats for both the driver and front passenger, M leather steering wheel, instrument panel with blue decorative seam, M-specific pedals, as well as novice exterior elements – black side gills, black ledges and the overall elegant look, of course. And for me, as I have already said when testing other cars, visual developments in the car are the best investment. It is always worth updating the looks, as less people are interested in the standard looks. Visual changes should never be forgotten when creating new, impressive models. And let’s be honest, no one in the Baltics likes to be ordinary! The front panel is all clear and easy to use, as it should be with any BMW. The multi-media advancements and updates are the same we can see in the 5th series. And throughout the whole interior we do not see much extravaganza, which is a good thing. This model also has the acoustic front glass that reduces the surrounding sounds 50
in the vehicle. And the owners of this X3 will also have the opportunity to choose such feature for the side windows as well (for an extra cost, of course). And if that is done, the car will be incredibly quite for the passengers inside it, creating some positive feeling of isolation. The visual effect on the side mirrors is quite interesting – it creates a more dimensional look, seeming even a bit crooked. I believe that this provides a much better view of the surroundings, yet it is something I have to get used to. The whole looks are simple, of good quality and they look mastered professionally and well-though-out. The look of elegance is given by the Piano Black Interior Trim that is a very typical feature for a BMW. I do, however, fell like the middle console should be a bit smaller for an extra leg space. All of the buttons are well-laid-out, everything is ergonomic and comfortable. And the black headliner is included in the M Sport package to add an extra luxury feeling.

MAN AND
SPA It used to seem an unimaginable combination, as society thought that SPA procedures were feminine. Yet nowadays the opinion is changing as more men have been starting to attend SPA facilities. So which procedures should men prefer? Words by Roberts Vikmanis Photos from Depositphotos
Facial Massage
This is an excellent way to introduce the shiest men to the fantastic world of SPA. Quite often men use their facial muscles more intensely than women. And to loosen the muscles up, facial massage comes quite handy. And if specialized cleansing creams are used, the harmful consequences of daily shaving will also be reduced.
Hot Steam Sauna
For men who prefer relaxing alone, sauna is a great choice. To sit down and relax while surrounded by hot steam – it will help with any tense muscles from stress and physical activities. And it is also a great way to open up throat and nose if closed down from winter cold. An even better combination would be a nice deep tissue massage after sauna – stress relief guaranteed.
Deep Tissue Massage
This massage is focused on the deeper muscle layers. And considering the intense load men carry daily, the massage will help to loosen the muscles, as well as prevent various organ damages that may be caused from too much of the physical load. After the massage man will feel much more relaxed and ready to take upon new challenges.
Water Therapy
If man does not prefer to be wrapped in mud or chocolate, a quite intense way to keep the body firm would be a high-pressure water massage. It will open up all pores and strengthen the firmness of the body, consequently fastening blood circulation. Such massage will be very exhilarating and intense enough for even the strongest of men.
Did you know?
Many places in the world have started to offer massages only for men. For example, USA houses SPA centres that provide beer and bourbon massages. It does not mean that the beverages are just poured all over men’s bodies or just given to them as drinks. The massages consist of special creams, oils and scrubs made from the beverages which are then massaged in the body. 52

BE MERRY THROUGH
THOUGHTFUL Yet another year of merry and jolly family time has arrived. But wait – how about presents? Even though so many people have lately started to announce that they need no gifts, just family by their side, let’s be honest – everyone also loves to receive even a little thing as long as it comes from heart. So we have provided a list of presents that are not valuable in terms of money, but do hold an enormous value in terms of thoughtfulness towards your loved ones. For Him Christmas Box of Fun
Filled with the necessities your other half uses daily plus some of more exclusive things, this seemingly little cardboard item will make him smile. Stock up the box neatly with brand new boxers, snacks, Die Hard DVD, a few bottles of his favourite drink and warm pyjamas.
Activity Advent Calendar
Who says you have to buy the calendar filled with candy? We say – make your own. Write up each day until Christmas with activities your special someone loves. Whether it’s playing a video game, watching Game of Thrones or spend a night at Laser Tag – make sure that you do it all together. From time to time it is amazing when someone shows initiative to do the things you love. 54

For Her Heavenly Bath Salts
There is nothing more soothing than having a nice hot bubble bath after a long and cold winter day. Make sure that your other half has the best of beauty products around her by making them yourself. All you need is good quality sea salt, food colour and essential oil of your choice. Mix it all up and shake it in a bag, after which filling it in a good-looking mason jar. And don’t forget to add a nice candle to set the mood to a completion.
Hot Chocolate Kit
This is a gift you may improvise with. The form and shape it takes is up to you – whether it’s a mason jar, separate tubes tied together with a Christmas bow or carefully wrapped packages. The most important ingredients to add are cocoa powder, dark chocolate, sprinkles, marshmallows and some snacks to go with it, such as cookies and waffles. Make sure milk is in the fridge and this combination will be as thoughtful as ever.

For Parents Family Calendar
Parents are always happy when they have a constant reminder of how much they love their children. Therefore, make a personalized calendar of you and siblings, if you have any. But do not stick to the old-fashioned “Let’s take some photos from archives and put them in there”. Devote some time and make a photo session of your own, taking pictures topical to each month. This will look so much more thoughtful and does not require special photographer.
Decorations with Love
It’s always nice to update the Christmas tree look. We all know how parents get used to different toys in their trees, each and every one reminding them of your childhood. Yet you now have a chance to make some new memories. Gather the closest family to a joint Ornament Factory. Purchase cleancoloured ornaments and different kinds of colours, sprinkles and other decorations. Make a night out of it while making some new and thoughtful memories for your dearest – parents.
For Friends Personalized Mug
From one hand, mugs seem like a gift that is usually given when nothing else comes to mind. From the other hand – a personalized mug is something your friend will drink hot chocolate from all the time. And we are not talking about a simple mug with a picture on it. Purchase special pens for such purpose and draw your own wish for your friend. And don’t be afraid of experimenting with colour and glitter (as long as it doesn’t get inside of the mug).
Cupcake Wonder Set
This is for those friends who usually invite you to their house and prepare something delicious out of seemingly empty fridge. Help them stock up and make a beautiful box filled with the necessities for cupcake baking (optional recipe, of course). Add colourful cups, cupcake mix, silicone baking tray, pastry bag and different-shaped tips, and toppings, such as sprinkles, chocolate flakes and others. And be sure to hang around after presenting the gift, as your friend will be so impressed that some fresh cupcakes may be baked.

In the background of their relationship outer forces appear - Italian and world history events closely impact the relationship of the two women. This story is about the women growing old, and in the very centre of attention there is the whole Italy, not being capable of letting go of its past and managing to live in the current times.
publisheD by howArD booKs This is a brand new and bold interpretation of the creation of a man. It has been based on centuries-old writings and researches, at the same time arguing with the traditional opinions on how and when we were created. The story tells of an island - a young woman has been flushed out from the ocean, all in ice, broken and almost frozen to death. Fortunately, Lilly has been rescued and taken in by Eve – the Mother of the Living. She calls Lilly her own daughter and invites her to witness the birth of the world in the Garden of Eden. It is considered that with this work the author invites readers on a brand new conversation on male and female equality in the context of our creation. Whether one agrees with the story or not, this concept will make you think long and hard about the existence of men and even meaning of life. | Winter 2017/2018

Westworld | Season 2 | 2018
Story of “Westworld” really is a genuine breakthrough in the science fiction field. The second season of this successful series is a balance between science fiction and western, and it will see its light in 2018. Storyline of the series will bring us into a futuristic entertainment park that creates an authentic Wild West experience. And as practice shows, the artificial intellect can and will start making decisions independently. Evolutionary androids have decided that people created from flesh and blood have no right to decide their destiny, therefore starting up a war against humanity. Fundaments for the project told of in the series can be sought in the original movie „Westworld”, created by Michael Crichton in 1973. The director’s chair is split between Saturn award nominee Jonathan Nolan, BAFTA winner Johnny Campbell, Richard J. Lewis and Michelle McLaren. The actor list is quite impressive as well - Anthony Hopkins leading the show incredibly, as well as appearances from Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden and Jeffrey Right. It is no surprise that there is a vast number of fans who are eager to see the second season of the show, both young and old. 58
Game of thrones | Season 8 | 2018
In the list of the most anticipated TV shows of 2018, these series are one of the most awaited (if not the first one) on the list for sure. Moreover, this is the season which will finalize one of the most recognized TV projects in the last years. The only thing one might find a bit disappointing is that the viewers will be granted with only 6 episodes instead of the standard 10. The creators of the show explain that it is due to the enormous budget spent on the series and lack of writing material for the adaptation. Fans of the novel series „A Song of Ice and Fire” also know that George R. R. Martin does not plan to change the rate for writing just because of the series. That is exactly why the show crew have taken quite a long time in terms of storyline development.
On the basis of the new season a new book will be set based on „A Dream of Spring”, and the development of the new storyline will be conducted by Dave Hill, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, who were able to write some worthy material for the previous seasons. It is no surprise that the contents of 8th season are kept in a secret. The only information extracted by some insighters is the list of actors with whom the contracts have been prolonged. The first episode of the final season will definitely cast personas of Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Kit Harington, Emilia Clark, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams and John Bradley. | Winter 2017/2018

It is doubtful that one will find a person who didn’t watch the cult series on the secret FBI agents – Mulder and Scully – X-Files. In 1993 it appeared on the screen and during a short period of time it turned out to be quite popular in many countries of the world. However, after 9 seasons of filming the series went into a long quiet phase, despite the growing interest from viewers. And only after 13 years a short season 10 was released in 2016, consisting of 6 shows. The public received it in huge ovations so Fox decided to continue developing more seasons. The new episodes can be awaited in January 2018. Chris Carter, the creator of X-files has shared some of the details included in the brand new season: Mulder and Scully trade places and Scully will find herself in a hospital while Mulder is safe and sound – such was the idea of writers already in the previous season. Also, some new aspects in the life of the duo will be discovered – not only in professional, but also private life. Partly, the fact of Scully giving their child up for adoption 15 years ago will be touched upon. 8 out of 10 episodes of this season will be ended with stories in the manner of “Monster Week”, not connected to the overall plotline.
One more project form Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander who decided to continue the show thanks to the amazing viewing figures and positive feedback from critics. Director of these episodes will be Ryan Murphy who knows how to keep audience on the edge of their seats. He had already demonstrated his skill in the „American Horror Story”, „Scream Queens” and „Feud”. He will also be joined by Oscar nominee John Singleton. In the actor list of the new season, some great names have been announced – Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss. In the centre of this story – medical centre “Memorial” in New Orleans have been left without electricity for four days during the storm “Katerina”. Doctors with Anna Pou (Paulson) in front have been left with the terrible decisions on which of the patients are worth saving. And those who are in critical condition were given lethal doses of morphine. Next day the hospital was evacuated, and when investigation revealed that 23 of the dead patients had high levels of morphine in their blood, Doctor Pou and two nurses were accused of second degree murders. Fate of the rest of the members – played by Annette Bening, Dennis Quaid, Matthew Broderick, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Courtney B. Vance – is still a mystery. 59

RUN Doing exercise such as running in wintertime seems like a “no, no” for a lot of people, mostly justifying it with an inappropriate weather. Yet most of the experts in the field have reassured that with several basic prerequisites one can have just as safe and complete exercise as in any season of the year. Clothing
The secret to getting dressed for a run so that you wouldn’t freeze or sweat too much – dress as if it is approximately 7 degrees warmer. And always wear gloves and a hat. When finished with the run, do not forget that your body temperature will drop down quite fast, so do not be fooled by feeling too hot. So change your clothes as soon as you can and put a dry hat on your head. Accompanied by hot cocoa, you won’t go wrong.
Pre-run
Before the actual run, get your blood pumping a bit. Do some running up the stairs, stretching and jumping a rope. Some people get that done by running after their kids or trying to make it to the bus. So the opportunities are vast and improvisation is 64

welcome. However, do not exaggerate – the limit should be when the sweat starts to come out.
Visibility
Not only is it important for the runner to see the way, but also for others to see the runner. And because winter season is known for its short-timed daylight, it is most probably that you will be running in the dark. So be sure to acquire reflective running clothes, as well as add some more reflective elements onto different places of your body. And don’t forget to do so from both front and back.
Wind
When running during a windier period, firstly - plan out your track so that the wind is in your face when starting the run and on your back when returning home. If it’s the other way around, you’ll get too hot from the wind on your back and too cold when it’s blowing in your flushed face. Secondly, use Vaseline-based products to cover your face and lips with. This will prevent pain and irritated skin after the run.
Hydration
Even if not feeling like having some water due to cold, it is important to hydrate just as much you would during warmer seasons. Just because it is cold outside doesn’t mean that you lose less fluid. Winter 2017/2018 |

HEAD, SHOULDERS, KNEES AND TOES Some enjoy spending their winters with activities one can do only during this cold season, skiing and snowboarding being the most popular. So that you wouldn’t get any unnecessary traumas and feel more confident on the slopes, try out some of these effective exercises at least a few weeks before the snow hits.
Hips
Knees
Core
One of the most frequent traumas while skiing or snowboarding appears in knees. Therefore it is imperative to strengthen them as much as possible before stepping on snow. First, put your legs into the usual ski or snowboard position. Then twist your knees forward and straighten them back. Repeat for at least 20 times and exercise daily.
Legs
So that you wouldn’t end your ski trip with stiff limbs and not being able to walk down the stairs, make sure to pay enough attention to your legs. And the best way to do that for winter sports is to do simple step-downs and split-squats. Repeat them at least 25 times a day and you’ll be good to go. 66
To correct yourself in the right position, straighten the hips and shift both hips and pelvis forwards to bring weight to the front of the feet, till you feel almost as if you’re going to tip over. Add this movement to the pelvic neutral movements above, and repeat at least 30 times a day.
The best way to keep your spine strong on the slopes is to strengthen it before. And the way to do that is the good-old planking. Both traditional face-down planking and side planking would be the excellent choice. Start out early with just a few seconds and eventually you will notice how the time spent while in the plank position will rise up.
Balance
To improve your balance while on any kind of board, do a 4-level exercise. First lie down on your right side with the same arm tucked beneath head. Then raise the left leg and lower it putting it behind the right leg. Then bring your left knee to your chest, and kick your left leg behind you. And then make clockwise circles with the left leg. After that, switch sides and repeat.
Arms
Although not that much used during the sport, arm strength is required to swiftly get up from the falls and deep snow heaps. One way is to do the traditional push-ups on the floor. After doing some of the traditional exercising, find some elevated surfaces standing opposite to each other. Put your feet on one surface and your arms behind you on other. Then start a slow push up and down. And if you want a more advanced exercise, also strengthening your core, do some pull-ups on a bar.
Elasticity
It is important not to be too tense on the mountain, as it could lead to some very painful strains. Just before stepping on the track, do at least a 15-minute warm-up. Leg and arm twists will do the trick for the extremities. By doing several slow circles with your head, you will loosen up the neck. Then circle your shoulders to the front and back, right after doing several full stretches by reaching your toes. Then some bending to the left and to the right – and you are ready to go!

Mirabell Palace and Gardens
Hohensalzburg Fortress is considered as the largest fully-preserved castle in Central Europe and is also used as the main emblem of the city of Salzburg. The fortress was built in 1077 by the orders of archbishop Gebhard. And only in 1500, under the supervision of archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, the fortress developed to the look it still preserves today. To approach the castle, one can choose between two ways – either going up by foot or riding the funicular, also known as the “Festungsbahn”. Having been the main residence of princearchibishops, the venue still holds various objects used during medieval times. Both the Marionette Museum and the Museum 68
of the Rainer Regiment welcome tourists to explore the past lives in Salzburg. And the old fortress also is used for famous Salzburg Fortress Concerts, as well as a multimedia Magical Theatre and modern media installations. In the very heart of the beautiful city of Salzburg you will find the cultural value DomQuartier. This architectural complex consists of the Residenz and the Cathedral. This is where on January 27, 1756 a genius was born – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The whole Mozart family lived in the house for 26 years, Mozart spending his childhood with his sister Nannerl. In 1773 the family moved to different settings which we now know as the “Mozart Residence” right there on the Makartplatz Square. The museum in Mozart’s birth-house was opened already in 1880 by the International Mozarteum Foundation. The whole experience will take you through all the rooms Mozart once walked through, all the while discovering different items of his everyday life in the 18th century. One will also have the pleasure to see Mozart’s very own musical instruments – violin and clavichord. Museum of Modern Art, on the top of Mönchsberg, is always a good idea – not only because of the art, but also the fantastic view of the old city it provides. Some valuable international works of 20th and 21st century inhabit in this
unique building. The whole area of the museum makes up for 2300 square metres, accommodating both internationallyacclaimed and self-owned collections. The building was designed by an architecture team from Munich – Friedrich Hoff and Zwink, and it was opened up in 2004. One of the greatest sights in the museum is glassed-in staircase which gives a view of the 19th-century water tower. Mirabell Palace and Gardens would be the most romantic sight to experience in Salzburg. The palace was built in 1606 under the orders of prince-archbishop Wolf Dietrich who built the palace for his beloved mistress – Salome Alt. The Marble Hall – former banquet hall of prince-archbishops, is regarded as one of the most beautiful wedding halls in the world, which explains a lot of white dresses and black suits the tourists may witness during their visits. There is also the highlight of the Angel Staircase leading up to the Marble Hall. And the garden – oh, what a sight to see! The baroque-like form oriented towards the cathedral and fortress seems so magnificent and historical. One of the main points of the garden is the Pegasus Fountain, as well as the Hedge Theatre being one of the oldest hedge theatres in the north side of the Alps. Various folk events and other performances are held here during summers. And the large garden also makes up two smaller ones – the Dwarf Garden and the Rose Garden.

RELAXING OR TREATING. HOW ABOUT
BOTH?
Escaping daily routine and be spoiled with relaxing procedures sounds quite majestic. Yet SPA is far more than that – it’s about preventing health issues caused by constant stress and tenseness one encounters daily. Words by Liene Eglīte Photos from Depositphotos
Benefits of Sauna
When attending a SPA, one of the most integral activities is visiting the saunas. It is one of the most calming activities that boosts health and, of course, emotional state of mind. To have a steam and escape everyday stress – that should be enjoyed by everyone. Other than that, it is considered that a sauna visit can significantly lower stress hormones, thus keeping the positive hormones in balance. If you have acquired a wound, do not be afraid of treating it with some steaming at sauna – various studies have shown that sauna effect can improve tissue and wound healing. Moreover, sauna supports the heart health by reducing one’s blood pressure, as well as increasing oxygenation and circulation. It also helps with some of the more serious medical conditions, such as depression or autoimmune disease.
Therapy and Massages
Of course the most important reasons for attending relaxing centres are treatments included in a full SPA programme experience. Massages and similar procedures can do wonders by releasing us from everyday anxiety and strained muscles. Some massages are lighter, helping to relax and energize, such as Swedish massage. Then there are more explicit 70
Would you try out these? treatments, such as deep-tissue massages that help with strained muscles, as well as injuries. Such therapies as hydrotherapy, electrotherapy and kinesitherapy are unique procedures aimed at specific problematic zones. Traditional Thai massage will compress the muscles, mobilize joints and involve acupressure. And the way it’s done is quite unusual – the therapist uses his own body to move the customer in several different positions.
Hotel Heubad in Northern Italy offers quite an unusual treatment with hay. The customers have to lie down covered in fresh, warm hay. After around 20 minutes they are transferred to a water bed for a continued rest. It is considered that the warm hay detoxifies one’s body and helps sore muscles, all the while stimulating body’s metabolism.
Energetic Recreation
More active people definitely prefer places that offer not only relaxing massages and bubble baths, but also some athletic activities. Not all, yet most SPA treatment centres are all about active recreation, so be sure to take some time in the swimming pool, doing a few laps after your massage. Also, aerobics and pilates are great ways to stretch out and keep your blood pumping for a better metabolism. Some of the most popular trends currently are yoga and movement trainings that provide not only physical benefits, but also strengthen the mental state of mind. Some centres also provide various medical gymnastics and examinations to determine one’s health condition in order to provide the most appropriate treatment the centre can offer.
Cryotherapy is something of a trend now. The Haikko Spa in Finland provides a chamber containing -110°C temperature, and visitors enter it for 3 minutes at a time. The benefits of such are muscle pain relief and glowing skin. Would you dare to have a massage with snakes? If so, Bali Heritage Reflexology and SPA is the right choice for you. The treatment is several pythons put on one’s body and letting them move around it. It is said that this plus the adrenaline will positively impact metabolism. | Winter 2017/2018

ALL ABOARD THE MARKET TRAIN
Instead of hypnotically going through malls and stores to purchase yet another impersonal item for your family members, try shopping in the most authentic Christmas spirit meanwhile acquiring some heartfelt gifts for your loved ones. We introduce the jolliest markets to attend during winter season. Words by Roberts Vikmanis Photos from Depositphotos
Altmarkt, Dresden, Germany
noVember 29 – December 24 “Frohe Weihnachten!” Let’s be honest – Germany is the most obvious choice for the most authentic Christmas spirit. The oldest market in Germany is located in Dresden, established in 1434. In the centre of it a traditional German fruitcake – stollen – begins the whole show. It is paraded through the streets of Dresden and introduced into the Dresden Striezelmarkt, after which a slice of it will be given to anyone around. The whole programme of the market includes not only gluhwein and local cuisine, but also traditional crafts and more than 100 events and performances. Millions of visitors usually attend the market, so make sure you are one in a million!
Vörösmarty Square, Budapest, Hungary
noVember 10 – December 31 “Boldog karácsonyt!” In the very centre of the city – the Vörösmarty Square – there is the magnificent Budapest Christmas Fair. This is the oldest and considerably the most astonishing market in Budapest. 72
The smell of mulled wine and roasted goods just begins the Christmas spirit, as light and music shows also await the guests of Budapest. Displayed on the façade of the restored Gerbaud building, the show will take your breath away as the windows turn into Advent calendar counting the days to Christmas. And while the count continues, make sure to try out some traditional food, such as stuffed cabbage, pork knuckle and Kurtoskalacs – baked dough product coated in sugar and cinnamon. Or get some of the artisan crafts as presents for your close ones.
Vesterbrogade 3, Copenhagen, Denmark,
noVember 18 – December 31 “Glædelig Jul!” This is quite a special Christmas market, as it is located in a rather closed space while still being in the very heart of the city. Tivoli gardens are an incredible venue every season, however on Christmas it turns into something enchanting. The seemingly small space of 82 square metres is packed with wooden stalls selling arts and crafts, local cuisine and hot drinks. Snow-covered trees, magical sound of the Christmas bells and even Santa’s reindeer – all of this will be met in one of the most fascinating holiday fairs. And do not forget to stop by the snowwhite installations in the middle of the gardens surrounded by live Christmas music – if that won’t give you the Christmas spirit, then we do not know what will. | Winter 2017/2018
Place Broglie, Strasbourg, France
November 24 –December 24 “Joyeux Noël!” Christmas Fairs of this mesmerizing town will transform even the most sceptical of people into full-blown Christmas enthusiasts. Most of the markets are located in Strasbourg’s Cathedral Square, and the rest are surrounding other streets of the town. Market on Place des Meuniers is a particular must-attend, as it provides the famous Alsatian cuisine. Just as well go and visit the Christkindelsmärik – a place where you will feel like attending a 16th century market. All of the markets consist of 300 stalls which offer the vast variety of crafts and food that would make not only the best Christmas presents, but also treats for yourself, such as Alsatian wine, spiced breads and other pastries. And after all the fun head down to Place Kleber where the Great Christmas Tree stands bright and tall. C

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,

However in this sequel of the famous story, the Rock will take upon the lead. In this brand new adventure story four teenagers are brought into the world of Jumanji when playing an old video game. And once again they discover that they do not play Jumanji – Jumanji plays them. Be sure to catch up on their adventures through a dangerous jungle. Director: Jake Kasdan Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan
World of Jumanji
Before we all jump into the Jumanji train yet again, let’s take a look back and revise some things about the original Jumanji. The movie was released in 1995, starring Robbin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce. This movie had a promising set of special effects, being one of the most impressive CGI movies at the time. The movie was taken in Keene, New Hampshire which represented the fictional town of Brantford. There were some additional shots taken in Vancouver as well. The story is focused on young Alan Parrish who found a mysterious board game buried a century ago in a construction site. Alan took the game home and showed it to his friend Sarah, and as they go along playing it, Sarah is chased out of the house and Alan is sucked into the game. 26 years later two orphaned siblings – Judy and Peter Shepherds – find the game in the attic and begin playing it. They unwillingly release Alan who is now an adult, having been trapped in the game for 26 years. The trio now locates Sarah and persuade her to join in the game, in order to reverse all the destruction the game has caused. The whole movie did quite well for the cast, as it earned 100,475,249 dollars, as well as additional 162,322,000 outside the United 80
States and Canada. However the reviews for the movie were as different as night and day. The average rating of the movie was 5.6, yet the author of the book – Chris Van Allsburg – was more than satisfied with how the movie turned out. After the movie, there was an attempt to re-create it as television series between 1996 and 1999. Although most of the series were quite similar to the movie, some pieces were still missing, one of the most prominent being the absence of Sarah’s character. A movie sequel was also in talks, as “Zathura: A Space Adventure” was produced. It was also an adaption of Van Allsburg’s book, assumingly being more directly connected to the Jumanji story. And currently we are waiting for yet another sequel – Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. So if you are a true fan of this horrifying, yet amazing story, be sure not to miss the whole thing. Did you know? • Word “Jumanji” is a Zulu word, meaning “many effects”. • The movie is based on a children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg, published in 1981. • There are total of 110 spaces in the Jumanji board game. • The role of Alan Parrish was also considered to be played by Steve Martin, Martin Short, Bruce Campbell,

Robert De Niro, Billy Crystal, Howie Mandel and Alec Baldwin. End of the movie was shot first, because the middle part would completely destroy the set of Parrish house. The role of Judy was handed to Kirsten Dunst, but it is known that Scarlett Johansson also auditioned for the same role. If you travel to Keene, New Hampshire, you will still see the symbolic sign of the “Parrish Shoes”. The author of “Jumanji” book also wrote “The Polar Express”. Alan Parrish’s father and Hunter Van Pelt are actually played by the same actor – Jonathan Hyde. The original game used in the movie was sold for more than 60 thousand dollars on eBay. A video game for the PlayStation 2 was released in 2006. | Winter 2017/2018

PAIN THAT INSPIRES Nir Hod is an Israeli artist who is widely known for his provocative works. His works embody not only the allurement of darkness and painful history, but also hints of narcissism. Most of his works are based on traditions, influenced by styles of Baroque and Rococo, all successfully combined with abstraction and modernism. As the artist himself has once said: “Many artists use their talent, yet talent uses only the best artists. Words by Mara Mikelsone Photos provided by Nir Hod

Tell us more about the essence of your works – why do they often include the topics of pain and darkness?
I have always sighted something romantic about the darkness, especially when it comes hand in hand with grief. I myself always feel something sad inside of me, yet I believe it is beautiful. And it’s not the sadness per se, but the melancholic feeling it gives. I think that every artist feels such emotions inside himself. And there is something that catches your eye in it – both spiritually and physically. And it has always been challenging and beautiful to work with that.
In many of the works you also use the dark side of the history. How has this tragic darkness seduced you to use it in art?
My aim is to integrate the history and its dark side in the society, so that the memory of it wouldn’t disappear. I have grown up in the shadows of World War II and Holocaust, living the life after. And in my works I use this subject and add a definite spice to it, then highlighting it back into the society and culture. Such approach makes me more involved in the history and its consequences in the modern world. Winter 2017/2018 |
Who are the people or which time period from the history it is that you inspire from? To be more precise, what is your source of inspiration?
I do not have only one. I have always considered myself as a man who enjoys every single day. I always feel alive and that is the feeling that inspires me. Life inspires me! I am open to new things, not putting any boundaries around me. And anything can inspire me – whether it is a museum I have visited, a person I have met or just a tree in my way. The surroundings inspire me and make me a better artist.
What in your opinion makes a good artist? Or even a great one?
A true artist is closely linked to his ego, not being afraid of being a narcissist. I consider myself as such and that has only helped me. And artist has to be able to do more and more – to progress. And if one puts such pressure on himself daily, the so called lovehate relationship develops. And constant existence in such relationship makes a better artist and does not let himself go. And if we talk about the works – I believe that every single work of an artist is excellent if you view them in perspective. Each stage of being an artist is his best
time – and what he has done in that particular time period really is his best work at the time. And as long as he manages to progress, each work becomes worthy. I feel brave enough in my current career and I am proud of what I have done and what I do now. It took a long time for me to feel this way, but I have finally got there. 83

Could you say more about your famous collage of pictures – “Mother”.
The focus of this picture has always been the little boy with the desperation in his eyes and arms raised in fear. However I noticed something different in the picture – something that did not catch an immediate attention from public. It was a woman who sort of blended into the picture and I decided to bring her out and put her into a Warhol-type collage. With this I gave her an opportunity to escape the tragic reality and step into a different life. A life to be just a woman, a mother. And I remember when I first showed the picture to public who did not know about the origins of the picture. I asked them to make guesses about what this woman could be. That was my provocation! Most of the people were determined to believe that she is a fashionista in designer clothing, going for a stroll or shopping spree. However, as soon as they found out who she actually is, they felt guilty. Yet I don’t think they should. I just wanted to show that the less you know the background of something, the easier it is to fall in love. And that actually is the purest love there is.

And what about the works „The Life We Left Behind”? What would be the message behind these paintings? It took me four years to develop these works. They embody tradition fused with modern elements, all the while including a functional aspect as well – and I believe that is a must in modern painting. From the technical point of view, the painting show colour degradation on the canvas. The whole method of the work was quite complicated. It included chrome layer on painted canvas, after which it was dried and then put in an oven. After – a high-pressure gun was used to make the image “broken”. I call it the intentionally unintentional approach. And the whole method has given the works many layers, thus pushing it into a whole new level. Winter 2017/2018 |
And regarding the concept of the work – it is of essence that the viewer sees his reflection in the chromed surface. Thus the viewer becomes an integral part of the work. When creating the work, I was strongly influenced by Wilde’s Dorian Gray. The viewer sees himself in the paint, the layers of which are far more than initially thought. Also, by using such material, I have acquired a light from dark. And as cliché as it sound – there is always light in the darkness. And the works also display the behaviour of people – how they act when they see themselves. And it is something that has always been important in all my works – the reaction and emotions of the viewers of my works.

SUPERVISING IN
AVIATION AND
WINTER SPORTS We introduce you to Lauris Kiukucāns, the Ground Instructor at SmartLynx Airlines who has been taken over by the world of winter sports. He started out as a luge rider, having experienced some great athletic times in the sport, and currently Lauris is a certified national referee in bobsleigh, luge and skeleton.
From an athlete to a referee – is it important to do the sport itself before being “on the other side”?
It certainly helps as you know the sport like no one else does. After I did my luge-time, the Federation approached me themselves and offered to referee in various national championships and competitions. And my goal is to acquire an international certificate, to broaden the horizons around the world.
What horizons have you seen when luging?
I feel like I’ve done quite enough for me, and the brightest experiences in luge sport have been in both Europe and US. I began the sport when attending the Children and Youth Luge Sport School in 5th grade led by the excellent Ingrīda Amantova. After that I attended the Laurenči Sporta School, and then got proposed to the Murjāņi Sports Gymnasium which is the next step in the career of luge, skeleton and bob-sleigh sports. 90
As soon as the season started, we were driven around various tracks throughout Europe, and that was quite a positive experience. Yet, we were intensely looked over in regards to the school work. If one had even a single mark below 5, it was it for luging until that was corrected. We were still pupils after all and had to acquire a comprehensive education.
What kind of exercising do luge riders do when it’s the off-season?
We trained different positions as the sport requires various skills from the athlete. We rode the so called roller luge in summertime. Although it was not exactly the same, it was an important exercise to do. And then, of course, coordination tasks. Luge riding requires quite a stamina in that field because riding was fast and with swift turns - one has to be on the top of his mind game while on such speed. So we did different coordination tasks, and I must admit they were intense. But they did prepare us well for the sport. | Winter 2017/2018
Winter Sport smartlynx
And then we had the professional physical fitness trainers to keep us up with our strength and fitness levels. Nowadays, each athlete also has a physiotherapist which was not the case earlier. I’m not sure whether it is actually necessary, yet everything is developing and maybe it helps the athletes in some way. Also, when still in school, until the 10th grade a lot of work was done with the weight of the future athletes.
And now, being a referee – how does that work while still working at SmartLynx?
I must say that the company is one of most forthcoming when it comes to its employees. We are supported in our hobbies, thus always finding time for that.
And while at SmartLynx, you…
Then I do the Ground Instructor work. We train both pilots and flight attendants by inserting them in challenging mock-up situations. We have a special plane built for that, so that an effective simulation can be carried out. Also, I do the practical examination of the future flight attendants what we call the land-check. It is when they are finally put on the plane with the passengers and do a full flight.

Turning back to the winter sports topic for just one moment – as you like to travel to different mountains, what would be some ski resorts you might suggest to our fellow passengers?
Well, it differs from the experience. For less-than-average skiers and snowboarders I would suggest Slovakia. It is very rich of beginner slopes, providing numerous possibilities for one to learn the sport. And then there is a fantastic place, mainly interesting for students and youngsters who can spare some more funds on the trip. It is in Bergamo – Livigno. It is full of pubs, bars and clubs one can have great fun at, all the while offering some amazing ski tracks to spend time at during daytime. And for the professionals - definitely Alps. They reach up to 3000 metres and are branched into numerous tracks for the visitors to ski and snowboard on. 91

TRAVELING WITH PETS

That allows you on time make the check in, give away your luggage and go trough security procedures. SMARTLYNX TRAVEL TIPS DURING THE FLIGHT
ALCOHOL
FOR YOUR HEALTH
To feel your best in the air remember: Alcohol: Alcohol should be consumed only in moderation. For each glass of alcohol, drink two glasses of water. Water: Please make sure that you are drinking enough water during your flight. Doctors are recommending to drink at least 0,5-0,6 l water every two flight hours. Clothes: Baggy clothes are best in the air. Try not to wear any tight – fitting clothes, loosen top buttons, belts and shoelaces and remove tight socks. Circulation: Circulation of blood is helped if you try not to cross your legs or ankles for long periods of time. Elastic support socks or stockings may help. From time to time it is good to stand up and make a little walk or make some exercises. Remember that even the smallest movements help with blood circulations, so you can also do some stretching while seated.
SLEEP AND SEATBELTS
If you´re planning to sleep during the flight, we recommend you fasten your seatbelt so the cabin crew don’t have to wake you should the Captain need to turn on the “fasten seatbelt” sign. We recommend that you keep your seatbelt fastened at all times while seated.
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
SMOKING
