Paying Your Dues IT ALL STARTED WITH AN ELECTROMAGNETIC field. I was working for American Express when it was discovered that my department was situated on top of an electromagnetic field. No one knew if this was unhealthy or conversely, if we would develop super powers previously unknown to man. At the time, Lou Lombardo served as the Executive Vice President of Operations for American Express Travel Related Services and I was one of the approximately 15,000 employees in his charge. It was widely known around the company that Mr. Lombardo started his career at American Express in the mailroom when he was just a teenager. From time to time, he held “town hall” meetings where he informed employees about company news and goals. He always invited questions at the meeting or via interoffice memos. I sent him a memo concerning the electromagnetic field. When his secretary called me to set up a meeting, I was stunned. This was a man whose days were scheduled to the minute. I expected a stuffy and aloof executive and was taken aback by how approachable he was. It was unmistakable that no detail was too trivial. And indeed, he listened to my concerns as to whether I would develop super powers or grow a third arm (he laughed at that joke). As I recall our meeting, I have even more respect for him. Since he rocketed through the company hierarchy to become a high-ranking executive at one of the most recognizable brands in the world, my guess is that he had a “can-do” attitude from the start. Just the other day, I was texting with a college friend who runs the advertising account for a luxury car brand at one of the world’s biggest agencies. She told me that several young employees requested to be moved off her account because they had been asked

to design banners. Did they think as “newbies” they would be charged with developing worldwide creative campaigns? We’ve all read about or encountered this curious, millennial attitude. My friend reminded me that she started out filing postcards. Later, she transcribed recordings from people who had been abducted by UFOs. She texted “I got that job because I filed the postcards so fast.” My own sister, with her newly minted masters degree in healthcare administration from Duke University spent her first week at a prestigious consulting firm coloring in bullets points with a Sharpie. Really, you can’t make this stuff up. There are countless articles about millennials: Some chastise them and their less than zealous attitudes toward work — expecting to skip over menial tasks and jump right into meaningful work. Some praise them — for seeking work they love and a balanced lifestyle. Others offer all sorts of explanations for this phenomenon. But here’s the thing: Someone has to file the postcards and color in the bullets. And the truth is, all of those jobs are meaningful and important. Anyone who has achieved any professional success at all can tell stories of their humble beginnings and how critical those experiences were to their accomplishments. The truth is you don’t know what you don’t know, and any business must be learned from the bottom up. Shortly after my meeting with Lou Lombardo, he arranged for my office to be moved temporarily while a construction crew created a new space for me and my fellow graphic designers. And no, as of press time, I have not developed super powers.

Lighthouse Point Teen Accepts Appointment To The Coast Guard Academy The United States Coast Guard Academy announced that Joseph M. Zingarella from Lighthouse Point has accepted an appointment to attend the Coast Guard Academy. Zingarella was sworn-in as a member of the Class 2021 in June. He attended Cardinal Gibbons High School. Admission to the Coast Guard Academy is highly competitive and fewer than 400 appointments are offered annually from a pool of over 2,200 applicants. Cadets receive a full tuition scholarship and monthly stipend for a five year service commitment to the Coast Guard upon graduation. All graduates receive a Bachelor of Science degree and are guaranteed a position of leadership as a commissioned officer in the United States Coast Guard.

Pier Review Mayor Lamar Fisher and Pompano Beach City Commissioners (both past and present) gathered May 22 to celebrate the official groundbreaking of Pompano Beach’s new pier, which is slated to be finished by early 2019. The new 11.8 million dollar pier will be just under 30,000 square feet, which is approximately 75 percent more area than the city’s current, 16,000 square foot pier. The old pier was built in 1964.

The new pier design includes shade structures, benches and marine-related artwork. It will be elevated an additional four feet to offset sea level rising and will be constructed using top-down methods, starting from the west to the east.

CONSTRUCTION OF POMPANO BEACH’S NEW PIER IS UNDERWAY “You’ll see it growing plank by plank by plank. It will be amazing,” said Mayor Fisher at the groundbreaking. The new fishing pier will be 864 feet long, have wi-fi, underwater cameras and security cameras. “Our pier will be a destination spot ... a true fishing pier in every sense, except with 21st century design,” said Pompano Beach’s District One Commissioner Michael Sobel. Demolition of the first three spans took place in June and the first new piles will be driven in mid-July. Demolition and installation of all the spans are expected to be done by September 2018. “God willing, the completion will be done in early 2019,” said Mayor Fisher. “That’s an aggressive timeline. We have put the pressure on our contractors and all those involved, but I know they can do it. They have a great history.” Construction of the new pier has resulted in the closures of the city’s old pier as well as nearby Pompano Beach Boulevard. The stretch of the boulevard, between Northeast Second Street to Northeast Third Street, will be shut down from now until Thanksgiving.

According to Pompano Beach city staff, completion of the new Water Taxi Station No. 1 is scheduled for the end of July. The water taxi station is to be located at the Sgt. Chris Reyka Memorial Park (101 N. Riverside Dr.) on the Intracoastal Waterway at the west end of Northeast Second Street. All necessary building permits have been issued and all funding has been obtained and approved. The Water Taxi project is partially funded by a Florida Inland Navigation District Grant, which will cover about 50 percent of the cost. The City’s portion is $130,815. The exact route of the Water Taxi will be announced at a later date, but is part of a multipronged effort to make the eastern edge of Pompano Beach more accessible to shop, park, stroll and get to other oceanfront locales.

The City Commission recently passed a new ordinance that establishes a formal policy for the acceptance of gifts to the city. Residents, local businesses and organizations periodically offer gifts of property or money to the city’s various departments, but until now, the city never had an official written policy in place for accepting them. “I thought it was important that we establish a policy that sets out a very clear definition of who is allowed to accept gifts, under what circumstances they’re allowed to accept them, and what approval process has to be followed,” said Lighthouse Point Mayor Glenn Troast, who initiated the ordinance. In the past, although there was no written policy in place, all gifts, no matter how small, were tracked. The city’s Finance Department had to be notified, and monetary gifts were placed in the general fund, which is the operating fund of the city. It was up to the incumbent mayor to decide who could accept the gift and under what circumstances. “Since I became mayor, I made the decision that if it was a significant gift, I would take it before the City Commission for acceptance,” said Troast. A case in point is a $21,500 donation from the Community Foundation of Broward that was used to fund a state-of-the-art training manikin for the city’s Fire Department last year. In another instance, the City Commission was asked to authorize the acceptance of a “remodel gift” for the fire station that was offered by the home improvement show “Designing Spaces” as part of a special program highlighting hometown heroes. The firehouse makeover, which was completed last month, ended up having a

The new ordinance sets forth that the city’s department directors are authorized to accept gifts valued at less than $500, and city administration is authorized to accept gifts valued at $500 and less than $20,000. Upon accepting the gift, “evidence of such acceptance shall be provided to the finance director.” Gifts valued at $20,000 or more are subject to city commission approval. The ordinance also states that the value of the gift has to be set by the donor at the time the gift is tendered to the city, and the term “gift” does not include sponsorship of city events. The City Commission will be able to accept gifts by motion, resolution or ordinance, depending on the formality that may be required for significant gifts. For example, in 2015, the city commission accepted the Walt and Mary Barker Library Fund endowment gift of $500,000 through the adoption of an ordinance that established the policies and procedures for use of those funds. The idea of establishing a formal procedure for accepting gifts took root last October. At one of its meetings, the City Commission was asked to make a decision about a gift of four team shelters that were being offered by several residents and businesses to the Recreation Department for youth team sports at Frank McDonough Park. The shelters, which would shade players from the sun when they were not out on the field, had a total value of about $15,000. After lengthy discussion, the City Commission requested that the recreation director provide a recommendation on accepting the shade structures at the following meeting, at which point the gift was finally approved. “That discussion made it very clear that we did not have a formal policy on this matter, and the Commission and I felt that it was important to establish one,” said Troast, who directed the city attorney to draft an ordinance. “I think it’s just a good policy to have, and it’s good to keep people informed as to what’s going on in the city,” said Troast. “Having a written ordinance makes it very clear whose responsibility it is for what.” Y

dd Breed Wild Ales is on schedule to open its tap room in Pompano Beach’s new innovation district across the street from Bailey Contemporary Arts this August. The unique craft brewery has officially passed inspections and is well on its way to transforming its space into a polished, artsy tap room where patrons can enjoy some light bites, casual live entertainment and Odd Breed’s Wild Ales. Utilizing “wild fermentation,” Odd Breed is a one-of-a-kind concept in South Florida. The mixed-culture brews are aged in French oak barrels, carbonated in glass bottles and occasionally infused with local fresh fruits. The aptly named odd and wild brewery is the vision and cocreation of Daniel Naumko and Matt Manthe. Naumko is a Venezuelan-born, trained musician and ad agency owner turned restaurateur/ home brewer who currently operates the Sybarite Pig in Boca Raton. Manthe has been a professional brewmaster for nine years and has been an industry consultant for the past several. Together, Naumko and Manthe wanted to introduce South Florida to the magic and creativity of wild brewing.

brewer’s yeasts. The controlled fermentation process used for most American ales using brewer’s yeast generally takes only about two to three weeks from grain to glass. In the case of wild fermentation, which uses a mixed culture of naturally occurring bacterias and microbes from the environment (including from trees, fruit rinds and old wine barrels), the process can take anywhere from several months to years. Julia Herez, a craft beer enthusiast and writer for CraftBeer.com, writes that this way of brewing is “nothing short of immaculate.” “It truly puts Mother Nature at the helm of brewing magic,” she writes. “The process develops a very, very interesting, beautiful and elegant beer that can sometimes be compared to very fine wines and Champagne,” said Naumko. “We basically find microorganisms that live within our region that we can culture and add it to our beer that produces great flavor — what they call terroir.” Similar to wine, where the soil, sun, rain and region affect the grape, Odd Breed trys to incorporate environmental influences into the beer. “In our case, the only way that we can connect our beer to our region is by picking up microorganisms from the environment and fermenting those out to see what kind of flavors they produce, then adding those to our mixed culture,” he said. “We can add local yeasts and microorganisms that we can find from trees or fruit peel or different sources that produce interesting flavors. We’re adding that to our beers, so now our beers have terroir the same way that wines have terroir.” Naumko said people are often shocked when they try Odd Breed Wild Ales. “People will drink them and say, ‘Is this really beer? I have never tasted a beer like this.’ They’re right. Winning Kingfish SEAPREMACY WINS SALTWATER SHOOTOUT! D&D LANDS A $29,000 KINGFISH! THE 19TH ANNUAL MERCURY/SEAVEE POMPANO BEACH Saltwater Shootout is officially in the books. The bite was strong and the competition was tight as 131 teams vied for a cash purse in excess of $150,000. A hefty weight of more than 100 pounds was necessary to break into the top 30. Just one boat crossed the 200-pound mark to claim the first place spot in the Shootout, which is the first leg of the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit. Captain Alex Burgess and his teammates on Seapremacy, a 29-foot, Mercury-powered SeaVee, kick-started their season with a bang, catching four kingfish and four blackfin tuna for a total of 200.4 pounds. First place earned the team a check for $20,160 along with the lead standing in the tournament’s points race.

Team Doing It All/Hard Way finished in second place with four kings and four tunas weighing in at 189.2 pounds, which earned them a check for $12,042. The team received a standing ovation during the awards ceremony when they announced that they were donating over $1,400 of their winnings to the tournament’ beneficiary charity, Children’s Tumor Foundation. The third, fourth and fifth places in the Shootout were all decided by less than three pounds. First in Line/Utopia finished

third with 174.6 pounds, followed by team Blue Moon in fourth with 172.5 pounds and Miss Michelle in fifth with 171.9 pounds. Miss Michelle also won the non-pro division and the non-pro bonanza to boost their tournament winnings to $5,275. Off the Wall made history at the 2016 Saltwater Shootout when they cashed a $99,680 check, the single largest payout in the history of any meat fish tournament in South Florida. Their jackpot payout came from winning the ‘Pick 3’ category in the tournament. In this category, three of the five eligible species are drawn from a sealed container to determine which species a team must catch to win the purse. Surprisingly, the three species drawn in the 2017 Shootout were exactly the same as in 2016 — kingfish, cobia and dolphin. Even more surprising was that only one team had the winning catch in 2016 and 2017, and that team was Off the Wall. The 2017 Pick 3 jackpot earned the team a $14,165 payday. While aggregate weights determine top team standings in the Saltwater Shootout, they are not the only way to win big at the tournament. Big fish are known to yield big payouts as well, and team D&D discovered that with the biggest catch of the tournament. They made a right turn out of Hillsboro Inlet and pinned the throttles on their quad engine Mercury-powered SeaVee toward Miami, where they landed a 41-pound kingfish that took the top spot in four different heavy fish categories, for a grand total of $28,661 in prize money. Melanie Chojnacki from team High Gear was the Top Female Angler with 65.3 points and Danny Castillo from Kimbuktu took the Top Male Angler title with 107 points. Hunter Irvine on Young Guns was the Top Junior Angler with 73.4 points and James DeMarco on Cold Steel/Native Son was the Top Pee-Wee Angler with 81.1 points. The heaviest dolphin of the tournament, a 34.3 pounder, went to Jeff Frost of Lauderdale Marina Fishing Team. Bryan Sagar of team Reel Addiction landed the heaviest blackfin tuna at 37.5 pounds, and Lacy Ingram of team Reel Stubborn landed the heaviest cobia at 29.4 pounds. BOCA RATON REGIONAL HOSPITAL CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY

ON JULY 17, THE BOCA RATON REGIONAL HOSPITAL WILL BE celebrating its 50th year of medical service to the community. One may believe the origins of a hospital to be a fairly uneventful story, but Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s origin is far from it—in fact, it appears to be something out of a movie. In 1962, Gloria and Robert Drummond’s children, Debra Ann and James Randall, were poisoned. Unfortunately, the closest hospital was around thirty minutes away and, due to the distance, by the time they arrived, there was little the doctors could do. The tragic death of their children drove the Drummonds to undergo the trying process of opening a hospital in Boca Raton—an act they hoped would spare any other lives from being needlessly lost. Gloria Drummond formed the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League, named after her children, which grew quickly to 700

members in just five years. The League raised enough money to open the hospital, opening its doors on July 17, 1967. The opening of Boca Raton Regional Hospital did not mean the end of the Service League—their work had only just begun. The Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League is still providing volunteers, orchestrating fundraising events and giving donations to this day. Today, members number over 1,200 volunteers. The Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League is not the only significant growth the Hospital has seen. By 1984, the original building had grown from 104 beds to 394 beds and nine floors. The hospital also added the 25,000 square-foot Debbie-Rand Memorial Pavilion which later became the home of the Women’s Center. Before

the end of the century, the hospital had also added the Lynn Regional Cancer Center, a new maternity wing, and the Davis Therapy Centers dedicated to rehabilitation. It appears that the hospital is growing exponentially, making a significant amount of additions. The hospital established the Christine E. Lynn Heart Institute in 2006, the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute in 2008, and expanded emergency services through the Wold Family Center for Emergency Medicine, established in 2011. Bernie Marcus, the CEO of The Home Depot, and his wife, Billi, provided the Boca Raton Regional Hospital with a $25 million dollar grant which was used to create the Marcus Neuroscience Institute. Later that same year, the Hospital opened the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health and Wellness Institute. These additions place the Boca Raton Regional Hospital at the forefront of medical science and development—particularly the Neuroscience Institute, which has become a major resource in the region for the growing field of neuroscience. Over the Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s fifty years of service, a lot has changed. What has not changed, though, is the dedication of the Hospital and the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League to serving the people of Florida. At the 55th annual Boca Raton Regional Hospital Ball on January 21, Edmund Nasralla, the President of the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League, reminded attendees that they are “charged with the responsibility of ‘keeping the promise.’ To preserve and protect Gloria Drummond’s legacy, and carry it into the future with the drive and passion she bequeathed to us.” Given the development of the hospital, the myriad accolades it has received, and the many people helped, it is clear that the Boca Raton Regional Hospital has kept Gloria Drummond’s “promise.” “Here we are, today, charged with the responsibility of ‘keeping the promise.’ To preserve and protect Gloria Drummond’s legacy, and carry it into the future with the drive and passion she bequeathed to us,” said Edmund Nasralla, President of the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League. “Gloria’s unwavering commitment allowed us to build a Hospital that not only lived up to but exceeded her highest expectations.” “The unrelenting commitment from our community is rooted in the origins of Boca Raton Regional Hospital. THERE REALLY IS NO SECRET TO SUCCESS. IT’S quite simple when you think about it. Show up. Work hard. Measure your progress. Adjust as necessary. Repeat. When you look at it on paper, it seems simple. But is it? Not really! I hear a popular term being used a lot. People complain about the “daily grind.” They have to get up, go to work, deal with a bunch of crap, listen to an annoying boss (hopefully our instructors at Elite Force don’t say that), go to the gym, make dinner and go to bed. Then they have to do it again and again and again. Sounds exciting and fulfilling, right? I think of the “daily grind” as something a bit different. GRIND stands for: Get Ready…It’s a New Day! In an interview with Yahoo, Mark Cuban said “Success is not a straight line; you have to grind it out.” When I heard that, something in my thick skull clicked. Do you think of your days and weeks as mundane and boring? Are your goals exciting and igniting that fire in your belly? Tony Robbins says, “People aren’t lazy. They simply | lhpmag.com

have impotent goals — that is, goals that do not inspire them.” When you have inspiring goals, you want to get up early. You want to bust your ass every day. You want to stay up late and burn the midnight oil. I see students at Elite Force get that martial arts bug. They go from saying they don’t have time to train two times per week, to finding time to attend four or five times per week. What happened? Did they find the magic formula to add more hours in the day and more days in the week? No. They found a goal, like black belt, that inspires them to find the time to get to class so they can make progress. Progress is the magic pill for happiness. We are all happiest when we are seeing progress in our goals. When we move forward with our fitness, health, finances, business and family goals, we are excited to show up the next day and move the ball forward again. That is the GRIND mindset. I FREELY ADMIT THAT I AM ONE OF THE “ELECTRONICALLY challenged.” My granddaughters, ages 8 and 6, have mastered computers, iPads and smartphones and currently are building centrifuges to enrich uranium, while I am lucky I can utilize my “dumb phone,” which only makes and gets calls. My son gave me a new car for my birthday. This was a revelation for someone like me, a member of “The Greatest Generation,” who are not so great at dealing with modern technology. I am not used to having my car talk to me, like when I veered over the white line and heard a beep, then this disembodied female voice saying: “Hello, this is Vera. You have changed lanes without signaling.” I thought that was cool, so I deliberately crossed the line again. The voice said: “What did I just tell you? This is not good. Don’t make me tell you again.” Now, being reminded is OK, but she doesn’t have to get snotty about it. Later, while waiting at a traffic light, I heard another beep and Vera said: “The car ahead of you has moved. You’re holding up the line. This is how traffic jams get started.” I started to long for the day when the driver behind you would honk his horn the instant the traffic light changed to green. This car has more cameras than the movie set of “Mission Impossible.” It has rear cameras, side cameras and front cameras, but my favorite is the camera for “girl watching.” It doesn’t operate in real time, as this would be a distraction. Instead, it digitally records all the pretty women it sees for playback later. You can set it for blonds or brunettes. I guess there aren’t enough redheads to make it cost-effective. Yes, there is a version that records “hunks” for the ladies. Speaking of cameras, my dumb phone does take pictures. I have used it to take more than 100 photos. I know they’re in there someplace, but I have yet to retrieve a single one. I’ll have to ask my granddaughters. The current electronic lexicon contains a lot of words I don’t understand, such as wi-fi, broadband, Skype, streaming, 2G, 4G,

6G, etc. When I was having a computer problem, my daughter told me to “reboot.” I thought that meant buy new shoes. I couldn’t figure out how that would solve the computer problem. I am, however, proud to report that I have learned to operate the GPS in my new car. I have become so proficient that I am able to mess with Vera’s head. I punch in the destination, then deliberately alter the route that Vera has prescribed. Vera: “Recalculating. In 200 feet make a legal U-turn.” I keep going. Vera: “Recalculating. Turn left at traffic light.” I keep going. Vera: “OK, idiot. Now you’re on your own.” Of course, I only do this when I know where I’m going. I love my new car, but it is beginning to scare me. It has started sending me e-mails. (True.) The latest one said: “Your windshield washer fluid is low. Please refill.” Then it got really scary when it added: “Buy the fluid at Publix. They have a twofer.” Y

Enhanced Life Estate Deed: Is It Safe?

THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO AVOID PROBATE ON your home when you die. If you are single, there will be probate when you die unless you choose one of the options below. If you are married and own your home together, your surviving spouse will not have probate; however, there will be probate when the second of you passes away, unless one of these options is done. Let us assume that you own your home jointly with your spouse and that you have two children. Both of you desire to have your two children inherit your home equally when you both pass away.

The first option is to add the names of your two children to the deed as joint tenants with right of survivorship. This is not a good idea. It would affect your ability to claim your full homestead exemption. In addition, you lose control of your property and can only sell it if your children both agree and sign all closing documents. If you wanted to take one of the children off the deed, you would be unable to do so. If one of your children files for bankruptcy, has an adverse judgment or files for divorce, your property could be subject to liens or other legal action. Therefore, I recommend

against a deed with your children as joint tenants with right of survivorship. The second option is a life estate deed. There are two types of life estate deeds: regular and enhanced (also referred to as Lady Bird). The regular life estate deed requires that your children join in any sale or other changes on the deed; therefore, you have lost control and cannot take your child’s name off the deed if you choose to do so. The enhanced life estate deed gives you the sole right to sell the property during your lifetime or make any other changes to the deed without the permission of your child. The enhanced life estate deed has very specific legal language in order to be effective. Therefore, do not attempt to do this on your own. Even with the enhanced life estate deed, there are risks, particularly if your child has a bankruptcy, outstanding judgment or undergoes divorce. The worst risk, however, is if, God forbid, your child dies before you or with you in a common accident. Your child’s estate would then become the owner of the property once you died, which would result in probate being required. Thus, the main purpose of the life estate deed is not accomplished. The best way to avoid probate on your home is to do a revocable living trust. When you sign the revocable living trust agreement, you also sign a deed transferring the property to you as trustees of your trust. You are able to keep your homestead exemption, maintain complete control of the property during your lifetime and make amendments to your trust without changing the deed. There are no risks involved, since your children’s names do not appear on the deed. The only disadvantage of the revocable living trust is that it will cost more money in attorney’s fees. When you discuss the options with your attorney, you should discuss the difference in fees between the revocable living trust and the enhanced life estate deed. TERRORISM IS AN ACT OF VIOLENCE USED TO INCITE FEAR and draw attention to a cause. It is frightening because of its randomness and unpredictability. Children may be confused over how a person could harm themselves in order to harm others, especially to harm innocent children. The recent terrorist attacks in England, once again, brought fear into many of our lives. It brings back the memories of other horrific incidents here in the U.S. for many adults. Today our children are experiencing more

anxiety and higher levels of anxiety than ever before. Anxiety has substantially increased among children and college-age students since the 1950s. Anxiety is something most children experience as a normal part of childhood. It is typical for children to go through a temporary phase that resolves. But children who suffer from an anxiety disorder experience fear, nervousness and shyness, and they start to avoid places and activities. The attack at the Ariana Grande concert brought terrorism to a whole new level for our kids. Many are keenly aware of this event because it happened to a pop icon who is popular with our children, and she happens to be from South Florida. Kids are also more acutely aware of current events due to social media. Parents need to be prepared to answer questions and quell fears that have come up for our young people. It is important to know the facts and clearly share them with your child. We all know the age-old “telephone game.” Frequently, facts become

distorted, embellished or just plain wrong as more people share a story. Parents should ask their children what they have read or heard about the incident. Listen to what they know and how they feel about it. Facts can be clarified on an age-appropriate level. Answer questions they may have succinctly, and be sure to address the issues directly. Avoid giving unnecessary details or discussing issues they have not brought up. When parents discuss fearful situations in a calm manner, it helps the child feel calm. Children who view their parents as scared feel even more certain there is something they should be very concerned about. Shield your child from exposure to the news that would be upsetting for them to hear. Talk to your child about your intention to keep them safe, and talk about other adults around them who also have the goal of keeping children safe. Teachers, police officers and firefighters are all part of the community that is here to keep you and your family safe. Children’s anxiety may not go away overnight. Therefore, it is important to be there to provide ongoing emotional support. When unexpected or traumatic occurrences happen, it is helpful to continue with the daily routine. Keeping things the same and predictable helps people move on. Children are resilient and will typically bounce back from their fear. The following signs may be an indication of ongoing worry: • difficulty separating from the parent • trouble sleeping • nightmares about an incident or themes of it coming up in play or discussions regularly • changes in eating habits • avoiding situations that remind him or her of the incident • persistent worry that something similar will happen • a noticeable detachment of feelings about the event • jumpiness If your child consistently exhibits these changes in behavior that begin to negatively impact their ability to go to school, spend time with friends or family, or engage in previously enjoyed activities, it is time to seek professional guidance. Lessons From Bait Fish BY JIM MATHIE

WHO KNEW THERE ARE 125 DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF BAIT fish? Pompano Beach resident Patrick Lynch knows, because he’s co-owner of Bionic Baits. Lynch took me on a tour of his facility, which got me thinking about the lessons we can learn from a bait fish. But first, a little bit about Lynch and Bionic Baits: Lynch’s facility has 2.5 million pounds of bait at his 19,000-squarefoot Pompano Beach warehouse. Bionic Baits is considered the largest volume distributor of bait in the southeastern United States. They import and export bait worldwide. Much has happened to grow the business from its humble start as M & M

Baits in a 1,500-square-foot warehouse at Southwest 15th Street and Dixie Highway in Deerfield Beach back in 1994 to the massive place it is today. Patrick has a background that’s as diverse as the types of bait he sells. Born in the Atlanta region, his family moved to Marathon when he was young. He likes to say, “We come from fish,” and these early years helped him develop his knowledge for fishing, diving and boating. After earning his degree at the University of Florida, he became a stockbroker, but soon realized the fish business was in his blood. Growing up in Marathon, he would sell fish to various restaurants. That led to him opening Lynch Seafood Market at 437 E. Atlantic Blvd. in Pompano Beach in 1992. He even tried a stint in construction management, but had the

opportunity to co-own M & M Baits with Mark Montella and soon sold his seafood market, which is still in business today. The name changed to Bionic Baits because their ballyhoo baits seemed to “last forever,” even when trolling. Ballyhoo is a very popular bait locally and can be used to catch a large assortment of fish. In Lynch’s Pompano Beach frozen warehouse, there are plenty of workers ‘rigging baits’ with the proper hooks and packaging them for sale. But there are also plenty of ‘naked’ baits, meaning the fisherman will rig his own bait. As in life, it’s all about bait presentation. There’s an analogy to life with how the bait is “presented” while trying to catch fish. In life, many good ideas go unrealized unless they’re “presented” well. Obviously, the bait alone doesn’t catch the intended fish; it’s the hook and how it’s secured within the bait. Even if an idea is presented well, there needs to be a hook. And then, it’s how the bait is secured to the line. An idea needs to keep someone on the line. The bait fish also teaches us about the hierarchy of the food chain. For the most part, the 125 varieties of bait fish are at the bottom of the food chain. But even bait fish need to eat to survive. So technically, they are not at the very bottom. As in life, the small fish are eaten by the bigger fish and so forth until you get to the Apex Predator. But even with the top dog, there’s usually a bigger one in the crowd. The bait fish made me realize no matter what, there will always be someone bigger and better. Like the bait fish, you are who you are. But just as Lynch grew his business from scratch, you can strive to be the strongest version of yourself. After viewing the outcome of bait fish at the Bionic Baits facility though, I’d still rather be a Apex Predator. THE TRIUMPHS AND DISAPPOINTMENTS WHILE WORKING ON THE OLDSMOBILE CAMPAIGN IN THE 1970S

LAST MONTH, I WROTE A COLUMN DETAILING HOW MY ART director/partner Paul and I had created my favorite commercial. When a friend read my column, he said, “OK, but what was your most successful one?” Beautiful, painful memories. My most successful idea was the biggest disappointment of my 50-year career. The year was 1969. The advertising agency I worked at, Leo Burnett (Chicago), had just bought an agency in Detroit with one big account: Oldsmobile. Creative teams in Detroit and Chicago were turned loose. We had one month to create an advertising campaign introducing the 1970 Oldsmobiles. We were all told to concentrate on

Oldsmobile’s Cutlass, then the third-best-selling car in the country (Chevy and Ford held the first and second spots). For two weeks, Paul and I struggled with ideas that elicited snide remarks from both of us: “It’s been done.” “Trite.” And the most frequent comment: “!*%#&!+!” Then one day, I had to drive to work. I turned on the radio and listened to music on the way. After a few songs, the disc jockey played Sammy Davis Jr.’s recording of “If My Friends Could See Me Now.” The song was a big hit from the musical, “Sweet Charity,” which had opened the previous year. I was lucky I didn’t get a speeding ticket on the way to the agency.

“It’s a great way to describe how you feel when you buy a car!” I said to Paul excitedly when I finally arrived. “Yeah, but it’s going to cost to buy that song.” “Not our problem. Let the production staff worry about money. And look how the song ends: ‘What a step-up, holy cow!’ A great selling line for a car!” We debated several scenarios before settling on one featuring a young fireman showing off his new Cutlass to his cohorts at the fire station. With the fire chief lip-syncing the line, “Holy cow!” The next day, I had a brainstorm: Why not have Sammy Davis Jr. sing our jingle? “It’ll cost a fortune!” Paul said. “What are you, my wife?” “Hey, I’m only saying what the suits’ll say.” (Suits: account executives; frequently, the enemy.) As it turns out, the suits loved the idea. And while Paul and I prepared storyboards and a recorded sound track, the suits contacted our production department to start negotiations with Sammy Davis Jr.’s agent. At that time, celebrities were insisting on high, sixfigure fees (which later grew into millions). Sammy Davis, it turns out, was delighted to become the first African-American spokesperson for a major advertiser. He was asking for “only” $250,000. “And that’s over my objections,” his agent told our production staff. It was mid-March. In those days, all new car models were introduced in the fall. In order to make September air dates, commercials had to be shot in June so they could go through what was then a lengthy film production process. This meant we had about two months to finish creating campaigns and getting approvals. Oldsmobile annually sponsored the Miss America Pageant. They bought five minutes of air time to introduce their new models: one minute each for the Toronado, Olds 98, Olds 88, Cutlass and Olds Omega. By the time Paul and I were ready for our presentation to the creative review committee, I had written a five-minute parodic lyric to “If My Friends...,” incorporating all five models. “The idea,” I explained to the committee, “is for Sammy Davis Jr. to sing the song while dancing from one car to another. We’ll let him choreograph the dance and introduce all the new models. Then, for the rest of the year, we use the [CONTINUED ON PAGE 64]

song for Cutlass only.” The committee, after listening to hundreds (literally hundreds) of ideas for two full weeks, selected ten for pretesting before going to Oldsmobile. “Friends” was one of them, and out-tested every other concept. The presentation to Oldsmobile, in mid-April, went superbly. They loved the idea. They loved the song. They loved the fireman commercial. They loved everything. What happened subsequently was told to me by our suits. Oldsmobile sat down with General Motors (GM) management, who loved the idea of the song, and the basic concept. Apparently, however, they questioned the agency’s assessment that the use of Sammy Davis Jr. would not be risky, even though 37 percent of all Oldsmobiles were sold in the Southeast. GM prepared a questionnaire for their Southeastern dealerships. Each dealership was to send the questionnaire to its best customers, asking about the use of Sammy Davis Jr. as a spokesperson. The responses had to be in GM’s hands by June 1. I was on good terms with Craig, one of our “suits,” whose connections with a few lower-management types at Oldsmobile made him privy to the responses. He read them at Oldsmobile, but could not make copies of them. “You wouldn’t want to read them anyway,” he told us. “Nothing but hatred. The kinds of ugly, racist comments someone would make only if he wanted to remain anonymous. But they all signed their names! All of them. And only three of them thought Sammy Davis would be OK.” This could never happen today, with African-American spokespeople actually commonplace. But it was a different world in 1969. I have never blamed General Motors or Oldsmobile for dropping Sammy Davis Jr. After all, they made a decision based on economic reasons, not racial ones. But I have never forgiven the bigots who responded to the survey. The five-minute introductory commercial was scrapped. But the fireman commercial ran on the Miss America broadcast, and for the rest of 1970. Paul and I created three more “Friends” commercials, and helped produce them. We used a very successful singer by the name of Dick Noel, and, though he was no Sammy Davis Jr., was excellent. By the end of 1971, Cutlass was the best-selling car in the country, and the campaign ran until 1973, when the gas crisis hit. Oldsmobile. My most successful effort ever. STEPPING OUT ONTO THE SAND AND APPROACHING THE tiki hut for On the Beach Watersports is like stepping into a teletransporter with a direct flight to a remote island in the Caribbean. A rainbow-colored, 27-year-old parrot named Sarah squawks as she dangles upside down from a stick suspended from the beachside stand. You can smell coconut oil and citrus as Kenny the Suntan Man demonstrates his homemade lotions for a guest. Tropical frozen drinks are served from the poolside tiki bar, guests lounge under beach cabanas and the skin-drying sensation of saltwater hangs heavy in the ocean breeze. The sun-warmed sand beckons you to slip off your sandals and dig in your toes. If you’re looking for a Caribbean-style vacation without going very far, then taking a day trip to On the Beach Watersports is the perfect getaway. The beachside vendor behind the Wyndham Royal Vista resort provides everything a tropical day should— relaxation, intoxication, excitement and leisure. There are jet skis, kayaks, standup paddleboards, cocktails, sail boats, cabanas and, of course, Sarah the Parrot.

You’ll be greeted by Kenny the Suntan Man, a charismatic and chatty New Yorker who has worked for the beachside vendor since 1983 and started his own suntan lotion line in 1985. Kenny hadn’t intended on being in the suntan lotion business, but when the resort he was working for at the time promised to provide free suntanning products for the Miss Florida pageant and bailed last minute, Kenny stepped in. “Two weeks later I was in Miami searching for a chemist. That’s when I picked up the name, The Suntan Man and started Under the Sun lotions,” Kenny said. Now Under the Sun products are sold online, in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean islands and various spots in the U.S. On the label is Sarah’s predecessor, a parrot named

Trigger. Kenny has been in the suntan and beach activity business ever since. On the Beach Watersports celebrated its 20 year anniversary at its current location on the first of June. “Basically what we do here is we show people what the proper use of suntan lotion is. We teach people how to tan safe in South Florida and enjoy their vacation. And we set the customers up with all the services they could want,” Kenny said. “We have jet skis, paddle boards, kayaks, sail boats, cabanas and chairs. We keep our prices low. A chair is only $5 for the day or $20 for the week.” Kenny said many of his customers are locals. “We get a lot of families that come every weekend. They live in the area and will walk over. The patio bar is open everyday from noon to closing,” he said. Kenny is not the only longtime employee working around On the Beach Watersports. Tony has been working there for almost 18 years (since he was 18), Henry has been there for three, the bartender at the tiki bar, Susie, for 19 and Sarah the parrot for 18. It’s easy to tell why. On the Beach Watersports is a little oasis. For my July Urban Adventure, Kenny invited me to help On the Beach Watersports celebrate their 20th anniversary. I took the opportunity to get my adrenaline fix on aLawson jet ski. Kenny hooked me Richard and Mark and my boss up with two four-stroke jet skis, Henry instructed me on how to work the beast, and I was off. Being on the jet ski reminded me a little bit of the last time I was on a mechanical bull, only this time I was in the middle of the ocean and could control the trashing myself. The ocean was choppy, so my new sea bull bucked up waves and crashed back down. My thighs burned as I hovered above the seat. As I pulled the throttle all the way down and gunned across the water, my arms tensed and I had trouble keeping a straight line. I squinted my eyes as the ocean water whipped my face. The feeling was exhilarating. Unfortunately, there’s a fairly contained space in which jetskiiers can cruise, so the path is pretty much a zig-zag, back-andforth track, but with enough speed and dare, the experience is still pretty gratifying. If jet skiing isn’t enough adventure for you, On the Beach Watersports also makes daily trips out to the Everglades for airboat rides and gator shows. “We have a shuttle bus that picks people up anywhere in South Florida within a ten mile radius of us.” said Kenny. “We bring people out to the Everglades to Holiday Park. arly one morning last month, a group of about 20 people – including a designer, a construction manager, professional installers and a three-camera production crew – descended upon the Lighthouse Point fire station and got to work. So why was the firehouse such a beehive of activity? Because when “Designing Spaces,” the home improvement show that airs on the Lifetime network, scouted the area for a location to feature in its upcoming special program celebrating hometown heroes, they chose the Lighthouse Point fire station. Being selected meant that the fire station, which was built in 1974, would receive the gift of a much-needed makeover, a project that took place over four consecutive days. Downstairs, the crew focused on the kitchen and break room. Upstairs, they targeted the bunk room and a common area that is used

partly as a classroom, partly as a lounge area. “These areas are just very aged and not conducive to a modern work force,” said Lighthouse Point Fire Chief David Donzella. “Designing Spaces” partnered with local businesses who provided materials for the project. Chief Donzella was asked to provide a wish list, and then they did their best to find partners to fulfill that wish list. “It’s a story about the men and women who serve in the firehouse, but it’s also a story about the community coming together and helping to make it over,” said “Designing Spaces” Producer/Director Arash Farsi. “I think what drives these businesses to do it is that they’re giving back to the ones who are looking out for us.” The Home Depot in Deerfield Beach donated a long list of items, including hardware, a new microwave oven, a “brick” wall treatment, new handles for the firefighters’ lockers, cleaning

products and a number of volunteers. Home Depot also arranged for paint to be donated by Behr, one of its vendors. “Designing Spaces” worked with Fort Lauderdalebased interior designer and decorator Heidi Pettee to put together a vision for the makeover that would best benefit the firefighters. “It centered around upgrading the space to be more contemporary, but to still provide a homey environment for them while they’re away from their loved ones supporting the community,” said Pettee. For the color palette, Pettee chose to use lots of white to brighten the environment, contrasted with some grey tones, and warmed with the feel of natural wood. The work in the kitchen and adjacent dining area, or break room, involved covering the existing grey tile floor, which was the original flooring from when the firehouse was built, with a new vinyl flooring that looks like natural

wooden planks. Philadelphia Commercial, a division of Shaw Flooring, donated all the flooring for both the downstairs and upstairs, and brought in their crew to do the installation. The old kitchen cabinets, which were pale grey with red handles, were replaced with brand new white cabinets with classic moulding, a donation from Innovation Cabinetry. Polished nickel handles and a new counter top were provided by Home Depot, and a backsplash made of white “subway” tile was donated by Philadelphia Commercial. A set of shiny new pots and pans were a gift from Range Kleen. The focal wall in the break room was covered with a new “faux” brick panel reminiscent of old firehouses found in Chicago or New York, only painted white. A special feature was placed in the middle of the brick wall: a vinyl application of the Lighthouse Point Fire Department logo that is four feet in diameter.


“I wanted impact on the wall,” said Pettee. “I like the fact that it represents the firefighters and celebrates who they are in a graphic way.” The three other walls of the break room, which were a cream color, were painted white. To “cozy up” the space, a large grey horizontal band was added. The band serves as a space to organize a collection of old framed firehouse photos and memorabilia. “Walking into the kitchen area, everything just seems brighter,” said firefighter paramedic Nick Palmisano, who has been with the Lighthouse Point Fire Department for seven years. “We’re here one out of three days, so this is our secondary home. It definitely has a warm, welcoming feel, more so than the old décor.” Upstairs, the “Designing Spaces” team gave particular attention to the bunk room, which is where the firefighters sleep at night. The firefighters work in three rotating 24-hour shifts (24 hours on, 48 hours off) with a minimum of six firefighters on duty each shift. consisted of one big open space filled with six twin beds. In order to give the firefighters more privacy, “Designing Spaces” partnered with the Pompano Beach branch of California-based Contractors Wardrobe, who provided highquality plexiglass partitions to place between the beds. The partitions are not only stylish, they are movable, which allows for flexibility in the room configuration. Home Depot donated silver industrial clip-on lamps that attach to the partitions so that each bed has an individual light. In terms of color, the sleep area is the reverse of the kitchen and break room. Instead of being mostly white with accents of grey, it is mostly grey tones with pops of white. Dark grey was used on the walls and for the new vinyl plank flooring to make the room more serene for sleeping. White accents include the partitions (which have an alpine oak middle section) and the new end tables. A narrow band of white was painted on the upper portion of the walls, and the existing headboards were painted dark grey. The city contributed new mattresses and box springs, which were topped with grey and white bedding. The color scheme carries over into the upstairs common area, where the walls were painted with bands of grey and white. The carpeting, which was showing signs of wear and tear in high traffic areas, was replaced with

carpet tiles that are grey with hints of brown, and have a subtle linear pattern. The tiles were placed in a way that alternates the direction of the linear pattern and gives movement. They were chosen for their durability and practicality; if the carpet is stained or damaged, only the affected tiles need to be replaced. As part of their improvement efforts, the “Designing Spaces” team had a fire sprinkler system installed throughout the firehouse. It was lacking because when the firehouse was built, there was no requirement to have one. The National Fire Sprinkler Association donated the system and subcontracted workers to install it. Thanks to the “Designing Spaces” team, the fire department received some stateof-the-art equipment from Scott Safety, a leading manufacturer of innovative protective equipment and safety devices. The company donated three thermal imaging cameras that fit into firefighters’ masks and keep the thermal image in view at all times. Scott Safety also donated one RIT-Pak Fast Attack. Launched in January, this compact device designed for rapid intervention teams (RIT) allows firefighters to administer air to a victim while getting them out of a hazardous situation. To top it all off, each of the fire department’s 26 firefighters received the gift of a fresh new

How to Watch the Show The Designing Spaces special “Spaces of Hope” episode featuring the Lighthouse Point firehouse makeover is scheduled to air on Aug. 4 and Aug. 11, 7:30-8am ET, on the Lifetime network (it will be shown an additional 75 times in major markets on affiliate networks). During the remodeling project, it was hectic as the “Designing Spaces” team and the firefighters worked around each other, but there was a mutual respect. “It was definitely a positive atmosphere,” said firefighter Palmisano. “They did everything in their power to make sure that they weren’t in our way.” For “Designing Spaces,” which is based in Deerfield Beach, this was their very first firehouse makeover. It was for a special series that the show produces called “Spaces of Hope.” For this series, they have carried out makeovers, both nationally and locally, at places like the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Love Jen Center in Hollywood, Kids in Distress in Fort Lauderdale, the Boys and Girls Club of Pompano Beach, veterans’ homes, animal shelters and schools. The objective of the firehouse makeover was not only to update the space and give the firefighters some of the comforts of home, but to give viewers a window into their world, to show them firehouse life and the dedication the firefighters have for the job. As a way to show the firefighters’ involvement in the community, the “Designing Spaces” crew filmed them as they participated in this year’s Lighthouse Point Keeper Days. The Chief Content Officer of “Designing Spaces,” Jason Gagnon, had a special passion for telling this story because his father, a retired lieutenant, served in the Miami-Dade County Fire Department for 30 years, and his uncles and cousins are active in other fire departments in South Florida. Gagnon was excited about giving back to the firefighters, who are “so selfless and put their lives in harm’s way on a daily basis.” The total value of the firehouse remodel is approximately $100,000. “The makeover gives a nice fresh appearance to a very old building, and makes it more pleasant to work in,” said Chief Donzella. LIGHTHOUSE POINT RESIDENT KNIGHTED BY QUEEN ELIZABETH II FOR HIS WORK ON A CRIMINAL INTELLIGENCE DATABASE


P

aul Wiggins Esq., MBE, a Lighthouse Point resident and dual citizen of the U.S. and U.K,, was recently Invested into an Order of the Knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in London. By being Invested into an Order of the Knighthood, Paul has earned a seat in the “Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.� Such a rank has been given to British citizens from the government since 1917 in recognition of top-notch civilian and military achievements. Wiggins was honored for his creation of a computer system and database that helps the British Overseas Territories in the Caribbean track criminals. The system, most often referred to as the Overseas Territories Regional Criminal Intelligence System (OTRCIS), was also used by U.S. authorities to help identify the Boston bombers.

Paul, his wife Gerzell and some close friends attended the honorary ceremony, officially called an Investiture in the U.K., which was held in the Royal Ballroom in Buckingham Palace on March 10. “Having an opportunity to visit the palace for this life changing event is an experience I will never forget,” said Paul’s wife, Gerzell Wiggins. “For Paul, having the British Monarchy recognize and bestow this title upon him for the amazing work that he does with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and their territories is an honor and a privilege.”

Now 91 years old, Queen Elizabeth II does not partake in as many investitures as she once did, instead having Prince Charles, Princess Ann or Prince William conduct the ceremonies. Wiggins was thrilled to learn the Queen herself would be giving him his medal of honor. “Who better to do it than Her Majesty herself,” said Paul. Along with Paul, there were approximately 60 honorees at the March 10 investiture. Before entering the ballroom, honorees are briefed and given detailed instructions on how to properly walk, bow or curtsy, shake the Queen’s hand and address her. In the first introduction, honorees address the Queen as “Your Majesty.” In subsequent meetings and during this conversation, they are instructed to address her as “Ma’am.” After the briefing, honorees are guided to the Royal Ballroom, where they are called to the podium one-by-one. The Queen graces each of the Knights’ shoulders with an actual sword (in the case of the Queen, one that belonged to her father, George VI). Then the Queen places the insignia and medal on each recipient. Paul said the investitures are one of the few occasions when the Queen actually removes her gloves. In British culture, this is an extreme symbol of respect and honor. Paul said he was humbled and honored to both shake Her Majesty’s hand, and converse with her. After each honoree is adorned at the podium, they have the opportunity to speak with the Queen for two minutes. Wiggins said the conversation is traditionally not to be discussed with anyone, so he couldn’t reveal what was said. One of the most striking observations Paul made was how differently he and his wife were treated once he was made an official Member of the British Order (MBE). As an MBE, Paul and his wife are now able to use the Chapel of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, located at the East end of the Crypt of St. Paul’s Cathedral and were able to [CONTINUED ON PAGE 108]

In an age when everyone is well aware they should be eating more vegetables, whole grains and fruits, we still pine for hamburgers. Recently, the Food Network tackled the national burger scene in “52 Top Burgers from Coast to Coast.” What a pleasant surprise to find our very own Charm City Burger on the map. Sure we know what a gem it is, but a little national recognition never hurt anyone. Of course we had been to Charm City many times since they opened a few years ago, but we made a special trip to celebrate — any excuse to indulge. Here are a few of our favorites...

While the fresh food is the real star, the Keys-inspired décor certainly accounts for part of their charm. The restaurant serves a selection of clams and oysters on the half shell. There are options for cooked oysters including the black and blue version topped with blue cheese and bacon. The menu also goes way beyond typical raw bar offerings with inventive tacos and sliders. Papa’s also offers a wide array of sushi and sashimi. Start off with one of the towers of Van Buskirk (you’ll find a few menu items named after locals.) The bare naked lady version is a combination of spicy wahoo and tuna with tobiko and masago topped with spicy mayo and served with taro chips. They serve all your classic sushi rolls but the superstars are their specialty rolls. There are plenty of land lubber options including burgers and hibachi offerings. For a traditional German meal, try the wienerschnitzel—it’s divine—a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed—throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers—which, of course, is a great sign. The whole cathedral is quite amazing.” As an MBE, Paul and his wife are now invited to attend services and functions at St. Paul’s Cathedral, may renew their wedding vows there, and may have their children baptized at the Cathedral. Paul said he and his wife hope to go back to London at some point to attend.

Paul’s induction into the British Order was in recognition of his work with the British Overseas Territories in the Caribbean. Paul is officially employed by the British Consulate-General out of Miami, but frequently travels to work in Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Turks and Caicos Islands, and a few other extremely remote locations in the South Atlantic. At these locations, Paul helps implement and train local leadership and officers on how to use his crime intelligence system, which he has been developing since 1996. The system has different names in different locations and can be customized to suit the user’s needs, but is generally referred to as the Overseas Territories Regional Criminal Intelligence System (OTRCIS). OTRCIS allows for powerful data storage, search, retrieval and analysis of data to assist in the development and dissemination of intelligence to help solve and combat crime. Paul started the database from scratch in 1996 and has helped build it to the mature and robust database that it is today. Because of the remoteness of many of the overseas British Territories, in some cases OTRCIS was the very first computer system the islands had ever implemented. Paul said some of his training had to start as basic as how to use a computer mouse and keyboard. Now the trainings are robust. Anguilla’s Governor, Christina Scott, was excited to have Paul’s system in place on Anguilla. “I am delighted to see the how this system and the training will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the challenging work of solving crimes, which in turn will help keep Anguilla a safe place to live, work and visit,” she said on social media in response to a review of systems on the island. Even though Paul is now one notch higher on the British Order, he remains humble. “I’m still Paul,” he said, “the same Paul that walks down the street with his dog, Riley.”

The Tapestry of Recreation WHY SHOULD CITIES FUND RECREATIONAL opportunities that clearly attract a limited number of residents? A recent newsletter from Pompano Beach commissioner Mike Sobel referred briefly to a $2.5 million annual subsidy for the city golf course. His remark was clearly meant to spark this question among residents. Should all of the city’s taxpayers fund lower fees so residents who choose to golf can do so at a lower rate? Clearly golfers can afford to pay the full amount, right? What about beach visitors expecting a clean, well-maintained beach area or fisherman at area piers getting access to the ocean for much less than the cost to provide? Should parents of local youth pay all the costs for sports fields, lights, etc.?

So I called city leaders in area cities to probe for answers. The mayor of Lighthouse Point, Glenn Troast summed up the issues this way: “That’s a difficult issue to assess because there are so many intangibles.” Clear answers in black and white are not easy in the arena of recreation and leisure activities. There are not many special formulas or easy comparisons to other cities. What one city spends on a specific program may be very different from what is spent in another city.

The answer to the question lay within the context of local politics: elected officials who live and govern within each city must campaign face-to-face with residents. If residents are happy about life in their city ...these leaders know it. When residents are unhappy, commissioners hear about it. Recreation is part of everyday life and happy residents go about their days not bothering commissioners. Unhappy residents let their thoughts be known. A large group of seniors in Lighthouse Point wanted to add yoga classes at the library, so they raised there voices and now those are available. Obviously, the funding made sense to enough people. Sure, one can argue that a city “needs” a golf course, city pool or tennis center to attract residents or new businesses. There is some truth to this; but one could say that all those amenities can or should be funded by those who use them. There isn’t a publicly-funded trampoline center and yet those seem to be a whole lot of fun for kids. The long list of area programs is excellent, but clearly I could list many other activities that might be offered to residents. Unfortunately, there is no recreation formula available for any city. The tapestry of our lives involves a variety of aspects that bring us joy and happiness. Many seniors clearly remember being a kid playing at the park or recall being a young parent taking their kids to local sport leagues. Their tax dollars to support those programs pay into a system their grandchildren now enjoy. Some people fish, some play golf and some like big holiday parades down main street. Together, we make our preferences known and explore new options to create a better quality of life for everyone. The word “love” is tricky for politicians but I can use it. Do you “love” living where you live? Why or why not? Using tax dollars to support selected recreational programs and facilities is a critical part of creating that feeling ... but very difficult to quantify. If you don’t love where you live, call your commissioner to suggest new colors for the tapestry.
