Odd Brew

Pompano Beach’s Innovation District will welcome a new craft brewer. Odd Breed Wild Ales is set to open their tap room across the street from Bailey Contemporary Arts in August. Odd Breed uses a special process called wild fermentation to craft a light, tart brew not dependent on brewer’s yeast. Odd Breed is one of the first brewer of its kind in South Florida.

CreativelySPEAKING

BY SUSAN ROSSER

Paying Your Dues IT ALL STARTED WITH AN ELECTROMAGNETIC field. I was working for American Express when it was discovered that my department was situated on top of an electromagnetic field. No one knew if this was unhealthy or conversely, if we would develop super powers previously unknown to man. At the time, Lou Lombardo served as the Executive Vice President of Operations for American Express Travel Related Services and I was one of the approximately 15,000 employees in his charge. It was widely known around the company that Mr. Lombardo started his career at American Express in the mailroom when he was just a teenager. From time to time, he held “town hall” meetings where he informed employees about company news and goals. He always invited questions at the meeting or via interoffice memos. I sent him a memo concerning the electromagnetic field. When his secretary called me to set up a meeting, I was stunned. This was a man whose days were scheduled to the minute. I expected a stuffy and aloof executive and was taken aback by how approachable he was. It was unmistakable that no detail was too trivial. And indeed, he listened to my concerns as to whether I would develop super powers or grow a third arm (he laughed at that joke). As I recall our meeting, I have even more respect for him. Since he rocketed through the company hierarchy to become a high-ranking executive at one of the most recognizable brands in the world, my guess is that he had a “can-do” attitude from the start. Just the other day, I was texting with a college friend who runs the advertising account for a luxury car brand at one of the world’s biggest agencies. She told me that several young employees requested to be moved off her account because they had been asked

10

to design banners. Did they think as “newbies” they would be charged with developing worldwide creative campaigns? We’ve all read about or encountered this curious, millennial attitude. My friend reminded me that she started out filing postcards. Later, she transcribed recordings from people who had been abducted by UFOs. She texted “I got that job because I filed the postcards so fast.” My own sister, with her newly minted masters degree in healthcare administration from Duke University spent her first week at a prestigious consulting firm coloring in bullets points with a Sharpie. Really, you can’t make this stuff up. There are countless articles about millennials: Some chastise them and their less than zealous attitudes toward work — expecting to skip over menial tasks and jump right into meaningful work. Some praise them — for seeking work they love and a balanced lifestyle. Others offer all sorts of explanations for this phenomenon. But here’s the thing: Someone has to file the postcards and color in the bullets. And the truth is, all of those jobs are meaningful and important. Anyone who has achieved any professional success at all can tell stories of their humble beginnings and how critical those experiences were to their accomplishments. The truth is you don’t know what you don’t know, and any business must be learned from the bottom up. Shortly after my meeting with Lou Lombardo, he arranged for my office to be moved temporarily while a construction crew created a new space for me and my fellow graphic designers. And no, as of press time, I have not developed super powers.

OUTRÉ THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS AN ADAPTATION OF GEORGE ORWELL’S “1984” AT THE POMPANO BEACH CULTURAL CENTER

The Outré Theatre Company is presenting its sixth full season of provocative theater. The first show of the 2017-2018 season will be a stage adaptation of George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984.” The adaptation, written by Andrew White, was premiered at the Lookingglass Theatre in Chicago in 2004 and later moved to Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre. The play takes place in a world of perpetual war and omnipresent government surveillance. The “superstate” and its residents are dictated to by a political regime controlled by the privileged elite of the Inner Party. These elite persecute individualism and independent thinking as “thoughtcrime,” which is enforced by the “Thought Police.” The play is a haunting look at fascism and proletariat despair. “We live in perilous, quickly changing times,” said Outré’s Artistic Director Skye Whitcomb. “Our season reflects our commitment to thought-provoking work, and it also reflects the political and social climate we find ourselves in. We’re really looking forward to our new home in Pompano Beach and are very excited about the shows we’re producing.” WHEN: July 13-30; Thursdays-Saturdays, 8pm; Sundays, 2pm WHERE: Pompano Beach Cultural Center, 50 W. Atlantic Blvd., Pompano Beach COST: $39/adults, $29/seniors and $19/students and industry professionals. Tickets are available online at ccpompano.org or by phone at 954-839-9578.

Pier Review Mayor Lamar Fisher and Pompano Beach City Commissioners (both past and present) gathered May 22 to celebrate the official groundbreaking of Pompano Beach’s new pier, which is slated to be finished by early 2019. The new 11.8 million dollar pier will be just under 30,000 square feet, which is approximately 75 percent more area than the city’s current, 16,000 square foot pier. The old pier was built in 1964.

The new pier design includes shade structures, benches and marine-related artwork. It will be elevated an additional four feet to offset sea level rising and will be constructed using top-down methods, starting from the west to the east.

CONSTRUCTION OF POMPANO BEACH’S NEW PIER IS UNDERWAY “You’ll see it growing plank by plank by plank. It will be amazing,” said Mayor Fisher at the groundbreaking. The new fishing pier will be 864 feet long, have wi-fi, underwater cameras and security cameras. “Our pier will be a destination spot ... a true fishing pier in every sense, except with 21st century design,” said Pompano Beach’s District One Commissioner Michael Sobel. Demolition of the first three spans took place in June and the first new piles will be driven in mid-July. Demolition and installation of all the spans are expected to be done by September 2018. “God willing, the completion will be done in early 2019,” said Mayor Fisher. “That’s an aggressive timeline. We have put the pressure on our contractors and all those involved, but I know they can do it. They have a great history.” Construction of the new pier has resulted in the closures of the city’s old pier as well as nearby Pompano Beach Boulevard. The stretch of the boulevard, between Northeast Second Street to Northeast Third Street, will be shut down from now until Thanksgiving.

Pompano Beach Designated a Preserve America Community The City of Pompano Beach has been designated a Preserve America Community. Pompano Beach is the first City in Broward County to receive this prestigious honor awarded by the White House. In recognition of this accomplishment, Preserve America held a Street Sign Unveiling Ceremony on May 9 at the fire fountain across the street from Bailey Contemporary Arts. Communities selected through the Preserve America Program receive national recognition for their accomplishments in preserving special places. Benefits include use of the Preserve America logo on educational and promotional materials; a community sign; listing in a web-based directory that showcases Pompano Beach’s preservation efforts and heritage tourism destinations; and other support. Many Preserve America Communities are featured in

“Discover Our Shared Heritage” National Register Travel Itineraries, as well as in the “Teaching with Historic Places” curricular materials created by the National Park Service. The Preserve America Program became an authorized part of the National Historic Preservation Program when former President Barack Obama signed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009. With this designation, 906 Preserve America Communities have been designated in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and two U.S. territories, including historic

neighborhoods within large cities and tribal communities. The Preserve America Program goals include a greater shared knowledge about the nation’s past; strengthened regional identities and local pride; increased local participation in preserving the country’s cultural and natural heritage assets; and support for the economic vitality of our communities.

CITY VISTA

Redevelopment Management Associates (RMA) and the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) of Pompano Beach have announced a new Artist in Residence program at their City Vista development near the Pompano Beach Cultural Center off Atlantic Boulevard. According to RMA’s plans, the City Vista development will include approximately 108 income-restricted apartments, three market-rate apartments and 3,800 square feet of ground floor commercial space. The one- and two-bedroom apartments will be available for lease by Landmark Developers. Artists who meet income requirements and apply to be a part of the Artist in Residence program will be provided leasing applications as soon as they become available from Landmark Developers. Those accepted for residency will receive various discounts, promotion opportunities and special access to classes and events at the cultural centers in exchange for occasionally volunteering at culture-related events and promoting Pompano Beach Arts. Artists are encouraged to submit a portfolio of their artistic work to innovate@copbfl.com “This is a tremendous opportunity for artists to live in an urban, dynamic new downtown community,” said Jody Leshinsky, Cultural Executive Director. “The Artist in Residence program will facilitate the success of City Vista, while also promoting Pompano Beach’s cultural arts scene, attracting and retaining talented individuals in the developing downtown, and providing a steady stream of volunteers to participate in the City’s growing cultural arts brand.” The City Vista development is what the RMA believes to be the “next step in the creation of The Pompano Beach Innovation District.” The Innovation District project began with the transformation of two deteriorating historic buildings into Ali Cultural Arts and Bailey Contemporary Arts. City Vista is the result of a public-private partnership between Landmark Developers and the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA); the CRA contributed the land upon which City Vista is being built. For more information, contact Emily Marcus, CRA Project Manager, at 954-786-7835 or visit pompanobeachfl.gov/index.php/pages/cra/cra.

FORENSIC AUDIT AUTHORIZED FOR POMPANO BEACH’S NORTHWEST CRA The Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency Board has authorized a forensic audit of the City’s Northwest Community Redevelopment Agency (NWCRA) tax spending since 1989 by a certified public accounting firm paid for by Broward County. The audit is in response to suspicions raised at a City Commission meeting which questioned CRA spending. Community Redevelopment Agencies (CRAs) are authorized by a Florida Statute to implement an economic development strategy to eliminate and prevent conditions of blight in designated geographical areas in the community. CRAs can also be job creators and drive major developments. Pompano Beach currently has two redevelopment areas under the management of CRAs — one in the East near the Pompano Beach pier, and the other in the Northwest near the new cultural center and City Hall.

Z UROLOGY IN POMPANO BEACH OFFERS STATE-OF-THE-ART CARE When did you start this business? I founded Z Urology 12 years ago, when I opened an office in Fort Lauderdale. In 2010, I opened my second location in Coral Springs, and this year our Pompano Beach office was added. Prior to starting my own urology practice, I was in a fellowship program in male infertility. What made you want to start this business? I have always dreamed of owning my own urology practice, and there was also a huge need in the area. Do you have a mission statement? To provide excellence in urologic care while being compassionate and available at all times. How many employees do have? The practice now has close to 30 employees, including five doctors and two physician assistants. Our doctors are on staff at seven hospitals in the area. There is a practitioner available to patients via phone access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. What services does your business provide? We provide comprehensive care for patients with a variety of urological issues, such as male infertility, male and female sexual

dysfunction, urinary incontinence, or elderly and female patients in need of complex pelvic floor reconstruction. Procedures are performed using the latest minimally invasive methods and robotic technologies. Dr. Christopher Hollowell, one of our practitioners, has an expertise in female urology, and commonly treats the condition of overactive bladder. His area of expertise also extends to pediatric urology. What special skills or experience do you have that you bring to your business? I was the first surgeon to perform a robotic laparoscopic surgery in urology in Broward County. I have also been a pioneering researcher in the use of biologic- and stem cell-based therapies in urology, which has led to successful trials in the treatment of Peyronie’s disease and other urological conditions. By being on the cutting edge of research we can educate and offer our patients the most advanced medical care in the world. Where are you located and what are your hours of operation? Our new office in Pompano Beach is located at 990 N. Federal Highway. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-5:30pm. A Leap of Faith IN CASE YOU MISSED IT, Pompano said goodbye to the current Pompano Beach Fishing Pier on May 22. Since it first opened in 1964, it has been a fixture for locals and tourists alike. I don’t personally remember the “glory days” of our pier. My youth was spent elsewhere, specifically at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. Casino Pier, of course, bears little resemblance to our pier. I did, however, grow up fishing with my father. I purchased my very first fishing rod at the age of six. It was a baby blue beauty and I got it at the Point Pleasant Boardwalk, which was not far from Casino Pier. Point Pleasant was much closer to our summer home, and exponentially more family-friendly than Seaside Heights in the 1960s. It took me all summer to amass enough tickets playing Skee-Ball to earn enough points to get that rod. My parents could likely have bought me one for far less money, but I had a goal! I kept my six-year-old eyes on that prize all summer, its baby blue gleaming behind the arcade counter. But I digress. Sort of. If you’re still with me, you know that this is all about fishing, and memories. Those of us who grew up near the ocean know the magic of fishing; those of us who don’t fish can still understand its lure (pun intended). As for the pier, well, piers are simply magical. Whether its a sunny morning, an afternoon or a late night, when you’re near a pier, you’re never far from having some company. And that, really, is what a place like our pier is all about. Fast forward a few decades to my children’s earlier years. The Pompano Pier is the backdrop of so many memories, the famous Junior Lifeguard Pier Jump being just one. On May 22, I stood

surrounded by faces full of excitement, giddy with the vision of our fabulous new pier. Watching eagerly as local dignitaries merrily picked up their ceremonial sledgehammers to signify the end of an era and the beginning of a new one, I was shocked to find myself blinking back tears. 1964! Where have the years gone? It was unexpectedly like saying goodbye to an old friend. Yes, our new pier will be fabulous. Yes, we will make new memories, as will our children, and their children. Memories of fishing. Of meeting that special someone. Of watching the sun rise over the ocean. Of making that fearless pier jump. That pier jump is a leap of faith, to be sure. And now, our city is engaging in a collective leap of faith — a leap into the future for our city. And what an exciting leap it is! But still. Goodbye, old girl. Thank you for the memories. And thanks to our city leaders for envisioning the future — a new pier that will form the backdrop of childhood for generations to come. Y If all goes as planned, the new Pompano Beach pier is scheduled to open in late January 2019.

Winning Kingfish SEAPREMACY WINS SALTWATER SHOOTOUT! D&D LANDS A $29,000 KINGFISH! THE 19TH ANNUAL MERCURY/SEAVEE POMPANO BEACH Saltwater Shootout is officially in the books. 131 teams competed for a cash purse in excess of $150,000. The bite was strong and the competition was tight. A hefty weight of more than 100 pounds was necessary to break into the Top 30 in the tournament, due in large part to a great tuna bite with 151 blackfin tuna weighed in on Saturday. Just one boat crossed the 200-pound mark to claim the first place spot in the Shootout and kick start their season with a bang at the first leg of the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit. Captain Alex Burgess and his teammates on Seapremacy, a 29 foot Mercury powered SeaVee, caught four kingfish and four blackfin tuna for a total of 200.4 pounds. First place earned the team a check for $20,160 along with the lead in the top team of the season point’s race. Team Doing It All/Hard Way finished just behind Seapremacy in second place with 189.2 points and a check for $12,042. They also weighed in four kings and four tunas. They

received a standing ovation during the awards ceremony when they announced that they were donating over $1,400 of their winnings to the tournament charity, Children’s Tumor Foundation. Third, fourth and fifth place in the Shootout were all decided by less than three pounds. First in Line/Utopia finished third with 174.6 pounds followed by team Blue Moon in fourth with 172.5

34

points and Miss Michelle in fifth with 171.9 points. Miss Michelle also won the Non-Pro Division and the Non-Pro Bonanza to boost their tournament winnings to $5,275. Off the Wall made history at the 2016 Saltwater Shootout when they cashed a $99,680 check, the single largest payout in the history of any meatfish tournament in South Florida. Their jackpot payout came from winning the ‘Pick 3’ category in the tournament. In this category, three of the five eligible species are drawn from a sealed container to determine which species a team must catch to win the purse. Ironically, the three species drawn in the 2017 Shootout were exactly the same as 2016 – kingfish, cobia and dolphin. Even more ironic, only one team had the winning catch in 2016 and 2017 and that team was Off the Wall. The 2017 Pick 3 jackpot earned the team a $14,165 payday. While aggregate weights determine top team standings in the Saltwater Shootout, they are not the only way to win big at the tournament. Big fish are known to yield big payouts as well and team D&D discovered that with the biggest catch of the tournament. They made a right turn out of Hillsboro Inlet on Saturday and pinned the throttles on their quad engine Mercury powered SeaVee towards Miami where they landed a 41-pound kingfish that took the top spot in four different heavy fish categories for a grand total of $28,661 in prize money! Melanie Chojnacki from team High Gear was the Top Female Angler with 65.3 points and Danny Castillo from Kimbuktu took the Top Male Angler title with 107 points. Hunter Irvine on Young Guns was the Top Junior Angler with 73.4 points and James DeMarco on Cold Steel/Native Son was the Top Pee-Wee Angler with 81.1 points. The heaviest dolphin of the tournament, a 34.3 pounder, went to Jeff Frost of Lauderdale Marina Fishing Team. Bryan Sagar of team Reel Addiction landed the heaviest blackfin tuna at 37.5 pounds and Lacy Ingram of team Reel Stubborn landed the heaviest cobia at 29.4 pounds. The exciting 3-leg PBSC summer series continues June 8 - 11 with its second leg, the Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam. Registration for the Saltwater Slam is currently open at www.saltwaterslam.com For a complete list of results from the Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Shootout, visit www.saltwatershootout.com

A Caribbean Day-Cay BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU

STEPPING OUT ONTO THE SAND AND APPROACHING THE tiki hut for On the Beach Watersports is like stepping into a teletransporter with a direct flight to a remote island in the Caribbean. A rainbow-colored, 27-year-old parrot named Sarah squawks as she dangles upside down from a stick suspended from the beachside stand. You can smell coconut oil and citrus as Kenny the Suntan Man demonstrates his homemade lotions for a guest. Tropical frozen drinks are served from the poolside tiki bar, guests lounge under beach cabanas and the skin-drying sensation of saltwater hangs heavy in the ocean breeze. The sun-warmed sand beckons you to slip off your sandals and dig in your toes. If you’re looking for a Caribbean-style vacation without going very far, then taking a daytrip to On the Beach Watersports is the perfect getaway. The beachside vendor behind the Wyndham Royal Vista resort provides everything a tropical day should -relaxation, intoxication, excitement and leisure. There are jet skis, kayaks, standup paddleboards, cocktails, sail boats, cabanas and, of course, Sarah the Parrot.

You’ll be greeted by Kenny the Suntan Man, a charismatic and chatty New Yorker who has worked for the beachside vendor since 1983 and started his own suntan lotion line in 1985. Kenny hadn’t intended on being in the suntan lotion business, but when the resort he was working for at the time promised to provide free suntanning products for the Miss Florida pageant and bailed last minute, Kenny stepped in. “Two weeks later I was in Miami searching for a chemist. That’s when I picked up the name, The Suntan Man and started Under the Sun lotions,” Kenny said. Now Under the Sun products are sold online, in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean islands and various spots in the U.S. On the label is Sarah’s predecessor, a parrot named

36

Trigger. Kenny has been in the suntan and beach activity business ever since. On the Beach Watersports celebrated its 20 year anniversary at its current location on the first of June. “Basically what we do here is we show people what the proper use of suntan lotion is. We teach people how to tan safe in South Florida and enjoy their vacation. And we set the customers up with all the services they could want,” Kenny said. “We have jet skis, paddle boards, kayaks, sail boats, cabanas and chairs. We keep our prices low. A chair is only $5 for the day or $20 for the week.” Kenny said many of his customers are locals. “We get a lot of families that come every weekend. They live in the area and will walk over. The patio bar is open everyday from noon to closing,” he said. Kenny is not the only longtime employee working around On the Beach Watersports. Tony has been working there for almost 18 years (since he was 18), Henry has been there for three, the bartender at the tiki bar, Susie, for 19 and Sarah the parrot for 18. It’s easy to tell why. On the Beach Watersports is a little oasis. For my July Urban Adventure, Kenny invited me to help On the Beach Watersports celebrate their 20th anniversary. I took the opportunity to get my adrenaline fix on a jet ski. Kenny hooked me and my boss up with two four-stroke jet skis, Henry instructed me on how to work the beast, and I was off. Being on the jet ski reminded me a little bit of the last time I was on a mechanical bull, only this time I was in the middle of the ocean and could control the trashing myself. The ocean was choppy, so my new sea bull bucked up waves and crashed back down. My thighs burned as I hovered above the seat. As I pulled the throttle all the way down and gunned across the water, my arms tensed and I had trouble keeping a straight line. I squinted my eyes as the ocean water whipped my face. The feeling was exhilarating. Unfortunately, there’s a fairly contained space in which jetskiiers can cruise, so the path is pretty much a zig-zag, back-andforth track, but with enough speed and dare, the experience is still pretty gratifying. If jet skiing isn’t enough adventure for you, On the Beach Watersports also makes daily trips out to the Everglades for airboat rides and gator shows. “We have a shuttle bus that picks people up anywhere in South Florida within a ten mile radius of us.” said Kenny. “We bring people out to the Everglades to Holiday Park. We let the gator boys do the gator show.” Y On the Beach Watersports opens daily at 9am and closes between 6 and 7 at night in the summertime. Learn more online at onthebeach.ws. You can also order Kenny’s Under the Sun products at underthesunskincare.com. On the Beach Watersports is located at 1110 S. Ocean Blvd. in Pompano Beach.

WILD & ODD

ODD BREED BREWING COMPANY IS ON SCHEDULE TO OPEN THEIR TAP ROOM IN DOWNTOWN POMPANO BEACH IN AUGUST. THE BREWERS ARE ON A MISSION TO INTRODUCE SOUTH FLORIDIANS TO A DIFFERENT BREED OF BEER — ALES CRAFTED USING WILD FERMENTATION.

Daniel Naumko and Matt Manthe.

Breed uses French Oak Barrels to age the beer. “We look for a more subtle, less vanilla-forward barrel, instead of the American oak,” said Naumko. “American oak is very good for bourbons and things like that, but for us it wouldn’t be the best choice because we’re looking for subtlety and elegance in flavor.” Odd Breed purchases recently emptied barrels from California, France and other parts of Europe that have been used to make both white and red wines. “When we get those barrels, we do a thorough cleaning of them to neutralize any potential bacteria that would be unwanted for us in our beers,” Naumko explained. “We fill the barrel with our beer and then we pitch our mixed culture. We allow it to ferment over the course of six to eight months.” Once the beer is fermented, Odd Breed does “bottle conditioning.” Similar to high-end champagnes, Odd Breed carbonates their beer naturally inside the bottle. “This usually takes anywhere between six to eight weeks, sometimes even more depending on the gravity of the beer,” said Naumko. Once the base beer is created, Odd Breed takes some of it to create fruit-infused beers using local and fresh fruits. “We have teamed up with a lot of local farmers that source interesting, fresh fruits, mostly organic, homegrown stuff that is grown without pesticides,” said Naumko. “We take all those fruits and after the beer is done and ready to go, we take a portion and separate them in different barrels or stainless steel containers. We put fruit inside those containers and then pitch the beer on top. Then we get a beautiful, even more complex fruit character that’s not just an added fruit puree.” Locally, Odd Breed has used passionfruit, starfruit, oranges, limes, lemons and mangoes. “We made a farmhouse beer in which we used three different varietals of mango that was very successful at all the festivals and beer events that we’ve poured at,” said Naumko. “People love that beer. Love it.” For fruits not available in South Florida, like cherries, blackberries and raspberries, Odd Breed uses flash-frozen fruits. “They pick the fruit at its best moment of ripeness and then they deep freeze it and vacuum seal it. It’s very clean. It’s the best way to preserve fruit,” said Naumko. “Theres a lot of breweries locally that use extracts that are not necessarily natural. The extracts leave a very artificial note in the beer. We steer away from that.”

Once the final products are made, Odd Breed bottles their beer in green glass bottles similar to Champagne. The beer comes in both 750ml and 375ml bottles. The labels are all custom-crafted by local artists, including South Florida’s own Rob Lloyd, who is known for creating beer-inspired art. Lloyd’s work can be found in Belgium, Germany and Miami. Naumko says he hopes to support other local artists by featuring their work on the labels and in the tap room.

An Artist’s Village

In addition to supporting local artists through the labels and art, Naumko plans on having live music and spoken word at the tap room. The brewery’s close proximity to Bailey Contemporary Arts, Ali Cultural Arts, Pompano Beach’s new cultural center and the city’s planned artist-in-residence apartments at City Vista, make it a prime location to contribute to a creative village. “We’re very, very excited about creating this little cool section of Pompano where there’s a lot of art and a lot of creativity going on,” said Naumko. “We have Kombucha makers, we have Blooming Bean brewing, grinding and roasting their own coffee, we have us making craft beer with a very strong connection to the region… I think the vibe is going to be kind of like Wynwood. That’s what I foresee happening.” While patrons enjoy music, beer and art, Naumko said Odd Breed will also offer some light bites. There will be no commercial kitchen in the Tap Room, but Naumko said Odd Breed plans on having locally-baked bread delivered daily, some local cured meats, artisanal cheeses and a variety of house-made pickles, which Naumko’s family makes at his Boca Raton restaurant the Sybarite Pig. “It’s a very European concept,” he said. “I think people will like it.” Odd Breed Wild Ales will call Pompano Beach its home, opening its doors across the street from Bailey Contemporary Arts at 50 NE First St. in Pompano Beach. If all goes as planned, the Odd Breed tap room will be open sometime in August. Check OddBreed. com for the most up-todate details. Y

Local Light BY MARIE PULEO

GERMAN-BORN CONRAD PICKEL

SPENT A LIFETIME MAKING LIGHT COME ALIVE THROUGH THE STAINED GLASS ART HE CREATED IN CITIES AROUND THE UNITED STATES. IN THE LATE 1960s, HE LIVED AND WORKED IN POMPANO BEACH, LEAVING HIS CULTURAL IMPRINT ON THE CITY, AND SOUTH FLORIDA.

Every week, thousands of people all over America see his works, yet many don’t know his name. Conrad Pickel, who for a time called Pompano Beach his home, designed stained glass windows for more than 800 churches throughout the country and is credited in the Guinness Book of World Records as having created the largest stained glass window in the world. “He always had one project after another,” said his son Paul Pickel. “If he were still living, I just can’t imagine the different projects he would have come up with or designed, because he was always, always working.” Born in Germany in 1906, Conrad Pickel grew up in Munich where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, then worked as an apprentice at the prestigious Franz Mayer Studio, learning the art of stained glass. At the age of 21, Pickel came to the United States to visit an uncle who had settled in Pittsburgh. The artist intended to stay for only a year, but ended up staying the rest of his life. For the next two decades, Pickel worked as a glass painter for studios in various locations around the country, including Los Angeles, New York, Boston and New

Jersey. In the early 1930s, while working in Columbus, Ohio, he married Joan Friedlemaier, whose father was a glass painter and Pickel’s co-worker. Around 1937, Pickel moved to New Berlin, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee, with his wife and their young daughter Erma. He worked for a prominent studio there, but had always wanted to start one of his own. So he eventually began working out of his home, looking for commissions. His big break came in 1947, when he learned that St. Helena Catholic Church in Minneapolis was bidding a project for stained glass windows. Pickel met with the pastor, who liked his work, but was refused the job because he didn’t have the backing of a large studio. As Pickel was walking out the door, the priest told him that the windows he really liked were in a church in Owatonna, Minnesota. “My father turned around and said, ‘I designed them,’” recounted Paul Pickel. The priest asked him to come back in and agreed to

Conrad Pickel (known as “Connie” to his friends) is noted primarily for his figures, especially faces and hands, and for his color. His trademark is his “Pickel blue,” which he used often. “It’s a soft cobalt blue with a bit of gray in it, so that it’s calming,” said Paul Pickel. “It was probably his favorite color.” “He was amazing too in the way he designed with the line work,” noted Paul Pickel. “When he would paint lips or eyes, he was able to create this fantastic expression with just a very simple, beautiful crisp line. I think he was a genius at that.” In 1956, Conrad Pickel opened a branch of his studio in Vero Beach, Florida, which his son Paul now runs. Pickel had visited friends there, and liked the area so much that he bought some property, designed a house and moved down with his wife and then 12-year-old son. The house, which he built with an architect friend, featured “Pickel” qualities, including his stained glass windows and mosaic tiles. Unfortunately, the waterfront home, which was eventually sold to another family, was flooded by two hurricanes and had to be torn down. The next stop on the artist’s itinerary was Pompano Beach. In 1965, his daughter Erma Obermayr moved there

He always had one project after another. If he were still living, I just can’t imagine the different projects he would have come up with or designed, because he was always, always working. —PAUL order one window, 20 feet high and four feet wide, for $2,300. He told Pickel that if he liked the window he would give him the order for the others. Pickel returned to New Berlin, converted a factory loft into a studio, and hired several people to help him. When the window was completed, the priest came to look at it. Happy with what he saw, he gave Pickel the commission. “They’re still some of the finest windows I have ever seen in my life,” said Paul Pickel. By the early 1950s, Pickel had moved his rapidly growing business into a three-floor building he built next door to his other studio. He now had one of the leading stained glass studios in the United States.

PICKEL

from Wisconsin with her first husband Russell, who was a periodontist. Conrad Pickel and his wife soon followed. Pickel, who was looking for an area where he could build another house, found a waterfront property in the Santa Barbara Shores neighborhood. “He loved the lot,” said Paul Pickel. “Once he had that, he designed the house to fit it, because it narrowed at one end.” He wanted to make the house, which was completed in 1967, a prototype that incorporated his various ideas of stained glass, including one of his inventions, a stained glass block called decralite. At that time there was a type of decorative white block that was made in Florida and used for balconies. These

blocks had openings, so Pickel decided that he would fill the voids with faceted glass – one-inch thick pieces of rich-colored glass held in place with epoxy – and create a stained glass building block. “His motto was ‘Let your walls be your windows,’” explained Paul Pickel. One outstanding example of Conrad Pickel’s use of these stained glass blocks is the enormous north window in the Advent Lutheran Church in Boca Raton. During the period that Pickel and his wife lived in their Pompano Beach home, the artist worked on numerous projects in the area. The house included an upstairs studio. Pickel would do his designs there and send them back and forth to the main studio in Wisconsin. He also rented a studio in west Pompano, and hired someone to help him do some of the fabrication there. In addition to using faceted glass, which came into vogue in the 1960s, Pickel used traditional leaded glass (pieces of painted glass joined together using a framework of lead strips) for his windows. His most important works in the area, according to Paul Pickel, are the steeple of St. Clement Catholic Church in Wilton Manors; the large window behind the altar of St. Stephen Evangelical Lutheran Church on 14th Street Causeway in Pompano Beach; the side and south windows of Christ Lutheran Church in Fort Lauderdale; and the large sanctuary windows of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Sunrise. All were done with faceted glass, a technique that uses an epoxy resin to hold the colored pieces of glass together, with the epoxy becoming part of the design. When the window is seen from the outside, the epoxy is light in color. But when it’s seen from the inside in dim light, the epoxy appears black, which creates a striking contrast with the rich-colored glass, an effect that Conrad Pickel loved and used skillfully in his work. “I think he was one of the best faceted glass designers anyplace in the world,” said Paul Pickel, who is an accredited member and past president of the Stained Glass Association of America, and was the recipient of the association’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. The project that landed Conrad Pickel in the Guinness Book of World Records was the faceted glass window he and his studio created for the mausoleum at Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, Illinois, outside of Chicago. Constructed from 1968 to 1972, it measures over 23,000 square feet, and is the world’s largest stained glass window. Another of his father’s most important works,

said Paul Pickel, is a faceted glass window that was commissioned in 1981 by the Union Congregational Church in West Palm Beach (the church is now the home of a Spanish-speaking Seventh-day Adventist Church). The Window of the Radiant Christ, which depicts Jesus standing over the New Jerusalem, was once listed as an attraction in the American Automobile Association travel guides. At 75 feet wide and 27 feet high, it is one of the largest stained glass windows in the country. A much smaller example of one of his faceted glass windows can be seen in St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Lighthouse Point. He crafted the narrow, vertical column of stained glass that can be seen behind the altars of both the main church and the adjacent chapel. In his Pompano home, one of the most striking features was the vertical stained glass louvers in the walls that enclosed the pool, which was inside the house, and covered with a screen roof. Each louver was two feet by six feet, and there were ten louvers in each wall. They opened and closed with hinges, and had an abstract design made of faceted glass. “That had not really ever been done before,” said Paul Pickel. “It was experimental.”

Today, one louvered wall remains, and can be seen from the front of the house. The façade of the house also features a rectangular faceted glass window that is in what used to be Conrad Pickel’s upstairs studio. Over what is now the entrance to the house, the artist installed a circular leaded glass window, which has numbers underneath it, and is a working sundial. Other stained glass elements include a musically themed decralite wall on the outside upper deck, and a light box at the top of a staircase. An Asian-inspired leaded glass window in an upstairs bedroom was installed by the artist at the request of the family that owned the house after he did. It is one of only a few windows that he ever did in this style. Downstairs, in the walls of what used to be the TV room and master bedroom, the artist used decralite blocks filled with pale blue glass. He also used decralite blocks done in various colors in the pool area. The patio and the inside of the pool were covered in one-inch by one-inch tiles. Pickel designed a mosaic for the bottom of the pool that includes a series of fish, and he spent many hours, along with some people from his studio, laying down the tiles.

“He loved the pool area,” said Paul Pickel, “It was so inspiring to him, to sit by the pool with the sun coming in and the stained glass around. I think that was the part of the house he enjoyed the most.” On the upper sun deck, he had a putting green. At one end of the pool, a winding staircase leads down to what was once his wine cellar. From a small window in the former wine cellar, you can see into the pool. “He had a lot of fun designing different elements for that particular house,” Paul Pickel said. The tile floor in front of the fireplace in the dining room included mosaics of a backgammon board, a chess board and a tic-tac-toe grid. “He enjoyed that house so much,” said Paul Pickel, “because it had his character in it. It wasn’t just a runof-the-mill house. It had the glass and the color and the little whimsical additions that he put into it, and was a welcoming and fun place to be.” But in 1970, it was time to move on. Conrad Pickel had always dreamed of opening an art gallery where he could display his stained glass, paintings, sculptures, and mosaics. After driving up and down the coast from Pompano to Palm Beach, he found a house on Federal Highway in Boynton Beach, a

location he liked because it was on a main thoroughfare. He purchased the lot, tore down the house, and built his gallery there, which he named Gallery Fantasia. He sold his house in Pompano, and he and his wife moved to Boynton Beach. The gallery was a cultural gathering place where Pickel organized free concerts and lectures, but it proved to be

too expensive to run, and he closed it in 1983. The twostory building, which is filled with stained glass windows created by Pickel, is now home to a real estate firm. In 1977, his entire studio operation was relocated to Vero Beach, and soon after, he closed the studio in Wisconsin. Pickel continued to live and work in Boynton Beach until his death in 1994, at age 88. In 2014, to honor his contributions to the city, Boynton Beach created an annual Conrad Pickel Celebration which it holds on the third Saturday in May. It includes a tour of buildings that contain examples of his stained glass work, as well as lectures and an art exhibit. Gloria Jacaruso, who with her husband Anthony has owned Conrad Pickel’s former Pompano Beach home since 2002, is a participant in the celebration. She gives a video presentation highlighting the Pickel features that make her house unique. When Jacaruso and her husband were house hunting in Pompano, they had narrowed it down to a few choices. She knew she wanted the one built by Conrad Pickel. “It’s not a cookie-cutter house,” said Jacaruso. “We lived in a brand-new house before this, and it was like a big box. Where else could you have a house with all these unique things?” The Pompano Beach Historical Society has expressed interest in preserving the house, and told Jacaruso that because of the artwork, the mid-century modern architecture and the history of the artist it is a good candidate for the National Register of Historic Places. “We didn’t know anything about the artist when we bought the house, but because of the City of Boynton Beach’s efforts to educate the public about Conrad Pickel, we have come to appreciate it even more,” said Jacaruso. “It’s surprising that such an internationally acclaimed artist has so many works here in South Florida.” “He was always a dreamer, and he dreamed big,” said Paul Pickel. “He had an energetic body and an energetic mind, and was always trying to create the next project.” “I think the long-lasting contribution of his art work,” Pickel continued, “is that many thousands of people see it every week in churches around the country, and even though they might not know who he is, they are inspired by it. The spirit that he created with his windows touches something in their soul.” Y

So when you’re looking for a change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. The kitchen offers an array of bar food as well as some classics like bangers and mash and fish-n-chips. The casual atmosphere is created by an immense array of nautical artifacts and oddities that fill every inch of the pub. The bar is large and there are tables, too—many have ocean views. Finish off with the Greek yogurt mousse, a lightly sweetened cloud with a hint of cocoa and a strawberry sauce to compliment. Table 2201 has a menu full of your Greek favorites without all of the hooplah. So if you are looking for a genuine Greek dinner without having to dance on tables and yell “opa”—not that there’s anything wrong with that—Table 2201 is a good choice. 2201 E. The Tapestry of Recreation WHY SHOULD CITIES FUND RECREATIONAL opportunities that clearly attract a limited number of residents? A recent newsletter from Pompano Beach commissioner Mike Sobel referred briefly to a $2.5 million annual subsidy for the city golf course. His remark was clearly meant to spark this question among residents. Should all of the city’s taxpayers fund lower fees so residents who choose to golf can do so at a lower rate? Clearly golfers can afford to pay the full amount, right? What about beach visitors expecting a clean, well-maintained beach area or fisherman at area piers getting access to the ocean for much less than the cost to provide? Should parents of local youth pay all the costs for sports fields, lights, etc.?

So I called city leaders in area cities to probe for answers. The mayor of Lighthouse Point, Glenn Troast summed up the issues this way: “That’s a difficult issue to assess because there are so many intangibles.” Clear answers in black and white are not easy in the arena of recreation and leisure activities. There are not many special formulas or easy comparisons to other cities. What one city spends on a specific program may be very different from what is spent in another city.

BY RICHARD ROSSER

The answer to the question lay within the context of local politics: elected officials who live and govern within each city must campaign face-to-face with residents. If residents are happy about life in their city ...these leaders know it. When residents are unhappy, commissioners hear about it. Recreation is part of everyday life and happy residents go about their days not bothering commissioners. Unhappy residents let their thoughts be known. A large group of seniors in Lighthouse Point wanted to add yoga classes at the library, so they raised there voices and now those are available. Obviously, the funding made sense to enough people. Sure, one can argue that a city “needs” a golf course, city pool or tennis center to attract residents or new businesses. There is some truth to this; but one could say that all those amenities can or should be funded by those who use them. There isn’t a publicly-funded trampoline center and yet those seem to be a whole lot of fun for kids. The long list of area programs is excellent, but clearly I could list many other activities that might be offered to residents. Unfortunately, there is no recreation formula available for any city. The tapestry of our lives involves a variety of aspects that bring us joy and happiness. Many seniors clearly remember being a kid playing at the park or recall being a young parent taking their kids to local sport leagues. Their tax dollars to support those programs pay into a system their grandchildren now enjoy. Some people fish, some play golf and some like big holiday parades down main street. Together, we make our preferences known and explore new options to create a better quality of life for everyone. The word “love” is tricky for politicians but I can use it. Do you “love” living where you live? Why or why not? Using tax dollars to support selected recreational programs and facilities is a critical part of creating that feeling ... but very difficult to quantify. If you don’t love where you live, call your commissioner to suggest new colors for the tapestry.
