See the Light IF I WERE IN CHARGE OF THE WORLD, THE summer solstice would be a national day of thanks. I know what you’re thinking—we already have one in November. But perhaps gratitude is something we should acknowledge more than once a year. So why June 21st? The longest day of the year is one of my favorites and since this is my fantasy and I rule the world, I get to choose what to celebrate. There are many reasons to love summer (even here in South Florida) but for me, my favorite part are the longer days. While intellectually, I know each day is still just 24 hours, those extra hours of daylight inexplicably lift my spirits. I should mention that my love of daylight is equally matched by my distaste for the night. OK, I’m not a complete lunatic. It’s not as if I am afraid of the dark. It’s just that everything always seems more dire after the sun sets. As children, many of us were scared of the dark. OK maybe not everyone—but I’d like to comfort myself and believe that at least most of us were afraid at night. When I was a kid, my bedroom was at the end of a long hallway. Every night I would run down the hallway and leap onto my bed like a track star. This technique allowed me to avoid the monster beneath my bed. (Why I felt safe once I was actually in the bed is still unclear to me.) Nowadays, while I am relatively certain there is no monster lurking in my bedroom, the night brings an entire new sense of dread. In the wee hours of the morning I manage to convince myself that I have a rare and incurable disease or that I will go bankrupt or any other number of insurmountable problems. Thankfully, every single day, the sun rises and in an instant whatever challenge seemed insurmountable just minutes ago–is now just another problem to solve.

But back to the daylight. Oddly, my favorite part of any day is dusk. On the surface this doesn’t make much sense, since dusk means night time is imminent. But maybe that’s why. Knowing that the night is right around the corner and that you must squeeze out every last bit of joy out of the day. I can still here the screen door in my house slamming behind me as I ran outside to join the other kids in my neighborhood for an apres dinner game of running bases. (Charlie Raffa had the best arm and could pretty much get anyone out.) And as it got darker, my mother would open that same screen door and yell out that it was time for me to come in to take a bath. Of course, this embarrassed me —as if I was the only one among my friends who bathed. It would take several attempts by my mother for me to acquiesce. Each time she called, I would insist that it was still light out. And once I was inside and looked out the kitchen window, I was always surprised to see that it actually was dark outside. Now at the end of a long summer day my husband Richard and I will fix some cocktails— usually something a little more festive— and sip them lounging in our backyard pool. We’ll float and sip and talk until the sun sets. Somehow those extra hours of daylight seem to actually slow down time. Obviously, that’s not the case—I suppose it’s just our perception of time that is altered. Either way, I’m grateful.

THE 32ND ANNUAL LADIES FISH OFF

The 32nd Annual Ladies Fish Off is June 1 - 4. This year, the tournament will benefit The Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida and The Billfish Foundation. The top ten boats and top three lady anglers receive prizes. The Ladies Fish Off has been going strong since 1986 when a group of ten enthusiastic lady anglers organized the first ladies-only saltwater tournament. Last year, 159 anglers fished on 49 boats and netted $32,000 for charity. The tournament is planned and executed 100 percent by volunteers. Since its inception, over $532,000 has been donated to the tournament’s beneficiaries. WHEN: June 1-4; Visual check out of Hillsboro Inlet and Port Everglades is conducted from 6 to 7am; Lines out at 7am: Lines in at 3pm; Weigh-in scales open at Sands Harbor Resort & Marina (125 N Riverside Dr., Pompano Beach) at 4pm: All boats weighing in fish must check in to Hillsboro Inlet by 4pm and proceed to weigh-in dock. Part One of both the Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament Summer Slam Series and the RK Sunshine SUP Series will be held on Saturday, June 3, south of the Pompano Beach Pier, 222 N. Pompano Beach Blvd. (Part Two will take place on Aug. 12). Participants can register at the kickoff party, online or the day of the event. The Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament is 7am-4pm; registration begins at 5:30am. Fish weigh-in is at 2:30pm onstage. Anglers will take their kayaks out fishing by the Pompano Beach Pier to compete for a chance to win over $40,000 in cash and prizes. Registered anglers will receive a goody bag, plus a free lunch from Zona Fresca, Jersey Mike’s Subs and the Dandee Donut Factory. RK Sunshine SUP Series registration and check-in begins at 6:30am on the beach; a pre-race meeting will be held at 8:10am; the first race begins at 8:30am. The RK Sunshine SUP Series is one of the biggest SUP (Stand Up Paddle) races in Florida, showcasing elite racers from all over the country. Races include the six-mile, three-mile, kids and tandem.

Kickoff Party Spectators can enjoy live music by the Copper Tones from 10am to 1:30pm. Free SUP and kayak demos will be offered on the beach. Vendors will give away free goodies. Boredom Busters SUMMER CAMP OPTIONS FOR KIDS

Kid’s Drama Camp

Lighthouse Point resident Emily Taffel is offering a drama program for kids in conjunction with the Lighthouse Point Recreation Summer Camp. Classes will be about one-hour long, and consist of acting, improv and public speaking techniques. Campers can choose to be part of a show at the end of the summer camp session, with large roles for those who plan to attend all summer and small parts for those traveling on vacation. Taffel has taught similar programs throughout Broward County. Hola Mundo Beach Camp and Recycled Art Project

For more than 12 years, a group of local educators has been offering the Hola Mundo summer program for children ages 4-13. This is the seventh year the program is being held on the beach, near the Pompano Beach Pier. Children participate in activities and sports while being exposed to the Spanish language. This summer, under the direction of local artist Carrie Bennett, the children will create a public art installation made entirely of recycled plastic bottle caps and lids. They will team together to organize the collected caps into a mural design and adhere them to panels for public display. The idea behind the project is to keep the beaches and local community clean by turning trash into art and encouraging creative community collaboration. The art assemblage will take place directly on the beach at Pavilion 2 beginning the week of June 12. This “Color the City” initiative aims to expand its mission, partnering with surrounding cities to bring color and light to South Florida through community involvement and creative teamwork. Deerfield Beach Summer Camps

The City of Deerfield Beach will offer a variety of summer camps for children of different ages. Day camps for children ages 6-12 will run from June 12 to August 4 at Deerfield Beach Middle School, Quiet Waters Elementary School (there will be a separate camp for middle school kids), Highlands Community Center and Oveta McKeithen Recreational Complex. In addition to the day camps, specialty camps include Teen Camp (ages 13-16), Drama Camp (ages 6-15), Jr. Lifeguard Camp (ages 9-17) and Surf Camp (ages 6-13). Deerfield Beach Pier Cleanup The 9th annual Reef Sweep (Deerfield Beach’s pier cleanup day presented by Dixie Divers) is upon us. This is your opportunity to help clean up the ocean, dive in a traditionally forbidden spot, contribute to the city’s environmental education programs, try out some new gear and participate in breaking a Guinness World Record for longest underwater human chain (all in the same day!). Scuba divers and snorkelers will swim out from shore around Deerfield Beach pier, an area traditionaly closed to divers, to pick up litter. The fishing pier will be closed from 9am to noon to create a safe space to maneuver around the pilings. Non-swimming volunteers will help the divers by lifting buckets and clearing debris. As the trash comes out of the ocean, the City of Deerfield Beach will weight it and keep track of its composition. This information will then be used for environmental education programs.

The Pier dive is one of the most fun for local divers because of the variety of marine life that congregates around the pier. The Reef Sweep is a once-a-year treat for diving enthusiasts. Participants are asked to please bring cutting tools (for monofilament), snips, scissors and small rakes. Each volunteer will receive a t-shirt and goodie bag. After the cleanup, beginning at 11am, those diving will gather to begin the quest to break the Guinness World Record for longest underwater human chain. The current world record is set at 182 divers held in Koh Tao, Thailand. With the traditionally high turnout of volunteers at the Reef Sweep, breaking the record should be no problem. There will also be a gear demo from noon until 4pm. The demo is a great opportunity to try out top-of-the-line Buoyancy Control Devices (BCD’s), regulators and the new full face snorkel masks. When: Registration is at 7:30am at the pier. Unload gear in front of the pier. Diving will be permitted from the beach from 9am until 11am. Organizing for the Guiness World Record begins at 11am. Record should be set by noon. The gear demo runs from noon until 4pm. Where: Parking at the pier will not be free, but parking at the Deerfield Beach fire station is free on a first come, first served basis. Requirements: In order to dive, participants must have a C card or Certification Number and sign a liability release for before entering the water. When did you start this business? We started The Gun Collection in late 2014. What was your inspiration? There were a couple of reasons we did this. We have an interest in older firearms: the history, engineering, etc. Also, having been part of the industry as an interested party for decades, we have seen a lot of situations where people were taken advantage of — especially the widows of avid collectors. I have seen disreputable dealers pay them $50 for a piece worth $2,000. My wife is an attorney who has handled many guardianships and Medicaid plans for women in really difficult circumstances. It makes her angry when she sees people taking unfair advantage of people/women who need the financial benefit these firearms and related items provide. We have made it our mission to see that people preserve the investment their loved ones have made.

Here Comes Summer ONE WOMAN’S QUEST FOR AN OUTDOOR OASIS

BY DAWNE RICHARDS AH, JUNE! THE BEGINNING OF OUR “winter” — you know, the season when the streets empty of children and neighbors go inside and don’t return (because being outside is simply unbearable). And just like northerners venture back outside in the spring, we venture back outside in the fall. “But wait!” you say. “We live by the beach! The weather is always gorgeous!” Well, yes. Yes, we do. But 90/90 (90 degrees/90 percent humidity) is, at least for me, not ideal. However, my family won’t let that stop us. We have outdoor space, and we’re by the beach, with its fabulous breezes. Surely we won’t be robbed of our outdoor paradise for several months a year. Enter the patio upgrade: a combination of astonishing Craigslist finds (good) and budget-friendly indulgences (hello, tiki carving). My family has, over time, fashioned our own slice of year-round outdoor paradise (we have a flag proclaiming “Paradise,” so it must be true). With an arsenal of the right weapons, you too can arm your patio against the elements 24/7/365. Really. Our first significant upgrade came on a Friday afternoon one May when I stumbled on a fresh Craigslist posting with the exact patio furniture I’d been lusting after. The price was 10 percent of the original cost. Text to husband: “It’s 5pm. Be at [address 10 minutes from home] at 6pm. Resistance is futile.” That evening, we sealed the deal. The seller’s wife had threatened him with the arrival of their new furniture on Saturday, and had mandated the immediate disappearance of their existing two year “old” set. He was thrilled to be able to meet the ultimatum. We were thrilled to find our dream set for a price that wouldn’t require the sale of a child. And … enter the rainy season. The incredibly thick cushions

provided living room grade comfort, at least when they weren’t soaked with the results of our daily summer deluges. “We can’t have this!” I cried. Ignoring my husband’s eye roll, I set out in search of the best way to keep the rain off our new “outdoor living room.” “Here’s our best protection from the sun,” said the retractable awning salesperson. Me: “That’s great! Does it keep the rain out?” Him: “Um, yes, if that’s your main concern.” Well, DUH. He had clearly not experienced the wet side of South Florida summers. Enter the awning, which (and I am not exaggerating) has truly transformed the space into an extension of our living room. It’s incredible. And yes, it shades the area, making it cooler, and cools off the living room too, which, pre-awning, was losing its battle with the hellish summer western sun. I bet you’re thinking, “What about the mosquitoes?” Well, we’re out of space here, but what it took to win that battle would fill another column. Suffice it to say that we eventually won (mostly). Are we finished? What a naïve question. Of course not! Next up: trompe l’oeil breeze block on the concrete wall. It’s going to be outstanding. Y

Get High in the Sky

“FLY THE FRIENDLY SKIES” IS THE SLOGAN OF UNITED AIRLINES. Well, they may be friendly in the sky, but on the ground, not so much. (I’ve never understood their catch phrase. It implies that the other airlines are up there dodging flak and waves of Kamikaze.)

Unless you’ve been hunting truffles in Siberia, you have heard about the paying customer who was injured while being forcibly removed from his seat to make room for a United employee. This takes customer service to a new level. Now, when you are bumped from a flight, you don’t have to walk off the plane. You are dragged down the aisle, thus conserving your energy. You even get complimentary removal of your carry-ons by the “customer service specialists,” otherwise known as airline police. As the story goes, United needed seats for a flight crew so that they could man a flight in another city. I don’t know about you, but I never had a job where my employer would assault a customer so that I could get to work. (However, I did have a boss once who admonished a stock clerk for parking in my Employee of the Month spot.)

I have a suggestion as to how to handle problems like this in the future. If you lose your seat on the plane due to bumping, you should be given a seat on the airline’s board of directors. At the rate airlines bump passengers, it will take about a day for us customers to gain control of the companies. As the new bosses, our first order of business should be to remove all of the seats and replace them with half as many leather recliners. Next, we will re-institute food service. Our caterer will be Seafood World, with an emphasis on stone crab. When stone crab is out of season, we will offer a high-end surfand-turf buffet prepared by Wolfgang Puck. The next thing to go will be the claustrophobic lavatories. They will be replaced with en-suite bathrooms. I know what you’re thinking. All this will reduce revenues to the point where the airlines will become unprofitable. Not to worry, I have the answer. We can eliminate the shortfall by installing blackjack tables on all flights. This will provide an ancillary benefit to the gaming industry by creating jobs for dealers and pit bosses. (By the way, never split fours.) First class will be re-named “high-roller class.” At a certain level of play, you will be eligible for the super-colossal size stone crab claws and a foot massage. “Whales,” the highest of high-rollers, will receive “comps,” such as free flights, the gift of their choice from In-Flight magazine and a subscription to Florida Gardening. The latter is to ensure that they only plant native species in our state. Lines of credit will be available. Anyone who refuses to pay off his markers will be gently removed from the airplane—in mid-flight. This will keep deadbeat losses to a minimum. Flight attendants will be re-designated as cocktail waitresses. They will make more in tips than they do now in salary. All “playing customers” will receive free cocktails. The new slogan will be: “Come fly with us. We’ll get you high before you leave the ground.” Y

A Day as a Derby Grrl BY MISS ADVENTURE PHOTOS BY JOE YERKOVICH I ENVISIONED WAR PAINT, BRUISED THIGHS AND spandex. I predicted raw skid burns on my elbows and knees. I imagined grimacing, snarling, beastly girls ready to pummel me. I worried about chipped teeth and heard echoes of hockey slams and rugby tackles. These were the flashes on loop in my brain the day I knew I was to take my next Urban Adventure: skating with the Gold Coast Derby Grrls at Xtreme Action Park on Powerline Rd. in Ft. Lauderdale. To my surprise, when I entered the rink arena that night, I heard warm laughter from small groups of girls congregating around the edge of the rink and saw friendly faces welcoming me to my first open practice. One of the leaders of the group (a girl who goes by the derby name “Anakin Skyblocker” and coaches the newbies like me, who are referred to by team members as “Fresh Meat”) showed me onto the rink where there were plastic boxes full of knee pads, helmets, wrist guards and elbow pads. I couldn’t help but feel like a jittery five-year-old learning to skate for the first time as I slid on the knee pads and velcroed on my wrist guards. After tying up my skates (which are the classic, old-fashioned kind with actual shoelaces), I stood up on the wheels feeling wobbly. I shuffled my feet to the edge of the rink and took a breath before stepping cautiously onto the slick surface. I realized then that my enemy was not going to be the other badass players, but rather my own klutziness. I had not skated in about a decade and felt completely inept with those clunky appendages at the ends of my precarious limbs. Luckily, at these open recruitment nights, the skaters separate into groups — the Fresh Meat group (where I belonged), and the seasoned players. While the real team did drills around a large oval of neon cones in the center of the rink, the Fresh Meat skaters convened on the far end of the rink, far out of the way. If one can’t quite make the Fresh Meat cut, there’s even one more step down — the “Rotten Meat” group.

To say I was relieved at this skill-level separation is an understatement, though some part of me looked longingly at the heat of excitement at the center where a coach blew a whistle and called out commands. This coach, by the way, went by the derby name “JustAss of the Piece” (in reference to her status as an exstripper-turned-lawyer). Derby names, I came to learn, are a fun tradition granted to each girl who joins the league. Anakin Skyblocker circled up the newbies and taught us — a group of about 15 girls — how to do the most basic maneuvers: the T-stop, the wedge stop, spinning around to skate backwards, and my personal favorite, jumping over a styrofoam pool noodle laid out on the ground. The first jump over that noodle was rather comical — my wheeled heels flew out from under me and my ass thumped hard on the ground (leaving a bruise I wish I could brag about). This was the case for most of us fresh meats. Yet, the

An iced cold beer on a blistering Florida summer day usually hits the spot. Nevertheless, there are times that call for something with a little more pizazz. The folks over at the Wyndham Deerfield Beach Resort and Chanson Restaurant at the Royal Blues Hotel were kind enough to share a few recipes. Exchange Club Park The Double Life of

The long-awaited reopening of Exchange Club Park is finally here, and residents of Pompano Beach and Lighthouse Point will once again be able to enjoy this waterfront oasis. After being closed for nearly two years, the park has emerged with a whole new look, but there’s more to this makeover than meets the eye. Since September 2015, Exchange Club Park, that rare piece of green space located on the Intracoastal Waterway in what many think is Lighthouse Point, but is actually Pompano Beach, has been inaccessible to the public from land or water while it has undergone a major transformation. Stripped of its dense, towering Australian pines, which shaded the just over 14-acre area, the land was laid practically bare, and left with a big, flat, bald spot in the middle. The picnic tables, playground equipment, barbecue grills and volleyball area were removed. This month, however, the park, tucked away at the end of Northeast 24th Street, is scheduled to reopen, featuring new landscaping, fencing and a walking path. So why did the park undergo an extensive makeover? Because, technically, it really isn’t a park. The primary purpose of this land is to serve as a site for depositing materials dredged from the Intracoastal Waterway and the Hillsboro Inlet. It has been designated for that purpose since the 1930s. “We have a hard time with folks understanding the difference between the two,” said Janet Zimmerman,

Assistant Executive Director of the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND), which owns the site. FIND is responsible for the management and long-term maintenance of the section of the Intracoastal Waterway that stretches from the Georgia-Florida line down to Miami-Dade County. Since 1981, FIND has leased the property to the City of Pompano Beach for use as a public passive park operated in cooperation with the City of Lighthouse Point. “It’s a nice arrangement that we can do dual purpose at this one site, but we need to make sure that it is available for its main purpose,” said Zimmerman. The last time the property was used as a deposit site for dredged material was in the mid-1960s, when a pile of rock debris was dumped there, most likely from the dredging of the Hillsboro Inlet. A section of the Intracoastal is expected to be dredged sometime in 2018. “That’s why we’ve been preparing this property,” said Zimmerman, underscoring an important distinction. From FIND’S point of view, they were not making over the park, but rather getting the property ready to receive dredged materials.

As part of this preparation, all of the non-native invasive plant and tree species within the property, including the Australian pines, were removed. The center of the property, which had several tree-covered mounds formed from past deposits of dredged materials, was cleared and leveled out to create a flat, open working area. Although many people will miss the Australian pines, a species that was once widely used for erosion control along beaches, they are now legally prohibited for use in Florida due to their invasive nature, rapid growth rate and nonnative status, according to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). Other non-native invasive species removed from the property were the red-berried Brazilian pepper trees and mahoe trees (they posed a specific threat to the federally protected mangrove trees on the east edge of the property, along the shoreline), and ground cover like the mother-in-

The flat open work area in the center of the property was seeded with native wildflowers that will provide natural habitat and ground cover to keep the soil in place, but due to an insufficient amount of rainfall, nothing has sprouted yet. If the property is used as a deposit site for any upcoming dredging projects, this wildflower meadow will be covered with dredge material or equipment, and will need to be reseeded after each project. One of the biggest attractions of the park has always been the sandy beach area along the Intracoastal. The beach will remain as it was before, where small boats, kayaks and paddle boards can come ashore. Amenities such as new playground equipment and picnic tables won’t be placed in the park until more details about the 2018 dredging project are available. For that project, FIND will be working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to remove small shoals in the Intracoastal Waterway,

law’s tongue (its narrow, stiff yellow-tipped leaves grow vertically to about two feet tall). Everything native was left behind, including the mangroves, palm trees and some ficus. The next phase of the project – the landscaping – lasted from August 2016 until this January (including a 90-day grow-in period). It involved the planting of a buffer of native trees, shrubs and ground cover around the perimeter of the property. This buffer includes a variety of palms, live oak, gumbo limbo, sea grape, pitch apple and buttonwood trees, as well as dune sunflowers. A new pine needle walking path was installed inside the buffer.

In this portion of the waterway, the authorized minimum depth is 10 feet, but the surveys that FIND conducts every few years show that in some areas shoals have reduced the depth to five or six feet. Because this stretch of the Intracoastal Waterway can be kept naturally deep for long periods of time, it could be another 10 to 20 years before it needs to be dredged again, though “it’s very difficult to predict,” said Zimmerman. Despite all the preparations, there is a possibility that the Exchange Club Park site might not be needed for the upcoming project.

While the cities agreed to share the development cost (about $100,000) and maintenance costs, the park became the pet project of the Pompano Beach Exchange Club, a service organization. The club’s members soon went to work on cleaning the heavily wooded area. Then, they built a double-looped jogging path that meandered through the Australian pine trees. Because of the organization’s efforts, the cities adopted resolutions naming the park after the Exchange Club. “We spent a lot of man hours over a period of several months cleaning out that property,” said James Wieland, a former Exchange Club Park in the 1950s. Exchange Club Park opened in June 1982 and was formally dedicated on Sept. 11, 1982. The following year, the Exchange Club built a wooden gazebo at the top of a rock mound, and eventually, a path leading up to it. Their goal was to add something new each year. The park is operated and maintained jointly between Pompano and Lighthouse Point. Presently, Lighthouse Point is responsible for opening and closing the park, daily housekeeping and the mowing of the park, while Pompano performs maintenance duties involving repairs. The Exchange Club conducts clean-up sessions several times a year, picking up garbage and large debris from the park and THE HISTORY beach area. “It depends on the quality of the material that has to be dredged and the depth requirements and offloading ability of the equipment that is used to remove it,” said Zimmerman. Once the material is dredged, beach compatible sand will be placed back either on the beach, just offshore or in the Hillsboro Inlet sand trap. This effort will be coordinated with a variety of government entities that are interested in obtaining the material for beach re-nourishment. The remaining material can be used as fill material in road construction and for other purposes.

location where the new access road was to be constructed turned out to be wetland area. The two cities and FIND are still determining how to repurpose the funds that were allocated for the project. The gravel parking area has been reestablished in its original location. Various solutions to the parking problem along 24th Street are being considered. “The area is not set up for large public gatherings,” said Lighthouse Point Public Works Director Charles Schramm, whose department oversees the daily maintenance of the park. “It’s in a small neighborhood with only one access street, and is more about small group and local resident usage.” Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point and the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) have put together a ‘mutual aid agreement’ that will allow the Lighthouse Point Police Department to enforce state statutes as well as Pompano code within the park. Before the agreement was put in place, only the BSO was responsible for the security of the park. Some of the most common issues at the park have been the parking along 24th Street, noise, crowds, alcohol consumption, dogs (no dogs are allowed inside the park or on the beach area), campfires, fights and vehicles driving in areas of the park that are prohibited. “I think the agreement will provide better coverage at the park because both police agencies will be monitoring the activity there,” said Lighthouse Point Police Chief Ross Licata. “We will be allowed to take enforcement action when we see violations occurring on the park property.” FIND met with the BSO to make sure the new design of the property was in line with the BSO’s standards for good visibility into the park when driving by. The new design provides a more open viewing than what existed before. Originally, the reopening of Exchange Club Park was expected to take place in May 2016, but preparing the property took longer than anticipated. The main reason for the delay was that when the project as a whole was put out to bid, only one contractor submitted a response, and it

was significantly over the budget. It turned out to be more economical to break the project down into different parts, and use four different contractors for each type of work. “The time it took go through the bidding and awarding process of each portion of the project added substantial time to the project,” said Zimmerman. The process of obtaining a license from Broward County to remove the invasive mahoe trees within the mangrove area also added to the timeline. The preparation of MSA-726 has cost FIND just over $1 million. FIND, a special State taxing district made up of 12 counties along Florida’s East Coast, gets its funding through a small portion of total real property taxes provided by these counties. When FIND turned the property over to the City of Pompano Beach at the end of February of this year, final preparations for its reopening to the public got underway. The traditional chain link fence around the perimeter of the property was replaced with a decorative six-foot-high black aluminum “picket” fence, which was paid for by both FIND and the City of Pompano Beach; FIND contributed the amount it would have cost to put in a new chain link fence ($105,500), and Pompano paid the difference ($59,500). “We’re excited about reopening and providing services for the residents around the park,” said Mark Beaudreau, Pompano Beach’s Recreation Programs Administrator. “It’s been a long, slow process, but we’re finally here. When the seasonal rains come and the meadow area grows in, I think it’s going to be an enhancement to the area. It will provide residents with a nice passive park.” If the property needs to be used as a deposit site for the dredging operations that are planned for 2018, the park will be closed again for a short period of time. In the meantime, this summer is the perfect time for residents to get acquainted with the new incarnation of what for many has been a long-cherished, secluded waterfront spot. Y

Pompano Beach Cultural Center and Library Ribbon Cutting Celebration PHOTO BY JEFF GRAVES Pompano Beach unveiled its new Cultural Center and Library at an opening reception and ribbon cutting on May 11. The Cultural Center is kickstarting the summer with a world premiere exhibit on loan from the Cuban government. “Shipwrecked of Reason: Half a Century in Cuban Art,” which features the work of 20 Cuban contemporary artists working in a diverse

range of media from the past 50 years. The exhibit is on display until the end of July. Throughout the year, the Cultural Center will host a variety of performances and exhibitions from the Center’s new Cultural Alliance, made up of some of South Florida’s best cultural organizations. The Cultural Center and Library is scheduled to open this fall.

The red ribbon was fittingly used in a cultural performance with dancers from Kevin Black Productions’ Cirquesco. The ribbon was cut by Florida State Representative Kristin Jacobs.

WHY DO SO MANY UNIVERSITIES PRIDE THEMSELVES ON WHOM THEY KEEP OUT? of which we all can be proud? Shouldn’t that be the standard we all seek? The Wall Street Journal reported the number of open Dr. John C. Hitt, President, University of Central Florida manufacturing jobs has been rising since 2009, and this year stands at the highest level in 15 years, siting U.S. Labor Department data. These open jobs require applicants with more knowledge and skills than was required in previous decades. With unemployment currently at 4.4 percent, and a high level of open jobs for which there are not enough qualified applicants, the options are to import skilled people or create them here. Recruiting highly skilled immigrants is a practice not without controversy. Should businesses invest more heavily in employee training and education for current U.S. residents? Absolutely. That is happening and will Dr. John C. Hitt, President, University of Central Florida continue, but industry has never been able to educate the masses. The famous G.I. His leadership has been essential to this accomplishment and I’m quick to note the average GPA for incoming freshman is 4.0. In a recent editorial in the alumni magazine, Dr. Hitt’s message strikes a cord that should resonate with us all: “With all the benefits college offers individuals and society, one question has always bothered me: Why do universities pride themselves on whom they keep out? The standard practice for decades has been for institutions to boast how exclusive they are and how many applications they reject. . . . . If higher education is such a powerful force for good in the world, shouldn’t we make it more accessible? Shouldn’t we strive to transform more lives and communities?”
