When you ask most people if they could work with their spouse, most answer with an emphatic “No.” Yet we found four local couples who are doing just that. In honor of Valentine’s day, we are shining the light on them.

The Lighthouse Christian School hosted a fun filled day for the whole community celebrating our police force, fire fighters and all of our first responders. We were there to record the fun.

With so much going on in Pompano Beach, it’s hard t keep up. Our Editor-at-Large, Jeff Levine has his finger on the pulse of Pompano. This month he addresses: The Fishing Village development, upcoming elections and topics he hopes are addressed in the State of the City

Dawne falls in love with the beach all over again. Who can blame her? It’s why we live here.

You know those days where you can’t decide where to eat or you know there is somewhere you want to try, but you can’t remember the name. Well, that’s when you should crack open our Dining Out section.

We have dedicated our last page to resorts and hotels near and far. Where to this month? We are headed out to Utah to the Amangiri Resort.

Creatively Speaking

Real Friends OK here’s the thing — I’m obsessed with “The Real Housewives” on the Bravo television network. Not just one franchise of “The Real Housewives” — I love all of them. I love the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Orange County. I love the Real Housewives of New York and New Jersey. I love the Real Housewives of Dallas, Atlanta and Potomac. And I hear there’s a new one in the making for Salt Lake City. Now that should be interesting. I realize this is a startlingly embarrassing admission. I prefer to think of myself as somewhat intellectual — emphasis on “somewhat.” And indeed I like to imagine my education has enabled me to navigate the world with an analytical mind. These qualities — imaginary or not — sit in direct contrast to my “Real Housewives” obsession. And truth be told, I know a lot of very bright women who are also super fans. Honestly, much of the housewives’ behavior is truly ridiculous and sometimes even repulsive. (Tables have been flipped. Hair has been pulled.) As individuals, hardly any of them are worthy of any sort of admiration. Case in point: on a recent episode, it came to light that several of the ladies of Orange County did not know who Ernest Hemingway was. I mean, it’s not like they couldn’t name one of his novels. They didn’t even know he wrote novels. Clearly, the bell isn’t tolling for them. In fact, every time I watch an episode, a tiny piece of my soul dies. So why do I love this show and these women? As the program is well into its second decade of production, I thought this topic was worthy of my consideration. I’m not the only one. An article on PsychologyToday.com entitled “Why We Can’t Stop Watching ‘The Real Housewives’ credits the show’s success to voyeurism and envy. Sure, most of the housewives are attractive and quite wealthy — sporting infinity pools, Channel bags and closets modeled after Hermés boutiques. But I think this misses the bigger draw — camaraderie. Don’t laugh. After giving a fair amount of thought to this topic, I’ve concluded that I’ve been sucked into this show due in part to a phenomenon I call “the circumstantial friend group.” Think about it. If you’re lucky enough to have a few close friends, typically those friends hail from different segments of your life. Maybe one is a friend from work and maybe one is a friend you know from high school or college. Maybe one is a neighbor. You get

BY SUSAN ROSSER the point. We tend to accumulate friendships from here and there. Rarely do all of our friends form a cohesive troupe. (I guess some people do?) Watching these women takes me back to my school days or summer camp. And if I’m being honest, I sort of miss those days.

LOS ANGELES - OCT 21, 2012: Lisa Vanderpump, Brandi Glanville, Yolanda H Foster, Kyle Richards, Taylor Armstrong, Adrienne Maloof at “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” season three premiere. (Photo by Jean Nelson)

During filming, the Real Housewives gather quite often. They meet for lunch. They go to parties. They host each other in their homes. And they travel together too. Of course being forced to hang out with the same people day in and day out has its drawbacks, but it is also good breeding ground for meaningful relationships. I know most people will determine I am a bit unhinged to find any value in this often vapid program. And truthfully, I haven’t really found value, I’ve just realized what I like about it is not necessarily the drama or the oversized closets or even the plethora of million dollar homes. It’s the friendships. Now how’s that for a rationalization? Perhaps I need a posse. Who’s in?

Jazz Reflections

The origins of jazz are deeply rooted in the culture of African Americans. Thanks to a grant from FAB! - Funding Arts Broward and Broward County, the Gold Coast Jazz Society is bringing this free jazz community outreach concert to Pompano Beach featuring members of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band. The concert will feature jazz standards and music from the Great American Songbook. WHEN: Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020 at 7:30pm WHERE: Pompano Beach Cultural Center, 50 West Atlantic Blvd., Pompano Beach

Troy Anderson’s Wonderful World Band — A Tribute to Louis Armstrong

This concert is a tribute to the jazz legend Louis Armstrong. Troy Anderson got his first taste for music while growing up in a Bahamian family filled with musicians. At the age of 10, he began playing the trumpet and went on to perform in the Florida Sunshine Band and the Gospel Sounds before being introduced to the world of the drum and bugle corps in school. A later stint with the Florida Vanguards taught him how to be an effective lead soprano soloist while performing in front of thousands of screaming fans. Subsequent tours with the famous Bayonne Bridgemen Drum & Bugle Corps helped hone his showmanship skills. Montage: A Film Series

Montage: A film Series is a program designed to link communities and people through the art of filmmaking and culture. To celebration of Black History Month, there will be a screening and community discussion on “Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People.” This is the first documentary to explore the role of photography in shaping the identity and aspirations of African Americans from slavery to the present. The film probes the recesses of American history through images that have been suppressed, forgotten and lost. Bringing to light the hidden and unknown photos shot by both professional and vernacular African American photographers, the film opens a window into the lives of black families whose experiences and perspectives are often missing from the traditional historical canon. African Americans historically embraced the medium as a way to subvert popular stereotypes as far back as the Civil War era, with Frederick Douglass photographed in a suit and black soldiers posing proudly in their uniforms. These images show a much more complex and nuanced view of American culture and its founding ideals. Inspired by the book “Reflections in Black” by photo historian Deborah Willis, the film features the works of esteemed photographic artists Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, Anthony Barboza, Hank Willis Thomas, Coco Fusco, Clarissa Sligh, James Van Der Zee, Gordon Parks and many others. City Beat

BY MARIE PULEO

City Will Add Temporary Beach Area Parking Lot To Meet Increased Parking Needs The City’s plan to build a 750-space public parking garage on the site of the Oceanside parking lot (109 N. Ocean Boulevard), next to the A1A fire station, is expected to be completed in the fall of 2021. In the meantime, the City intends to lease a vacant, grassy lot at 3300 SE First Street and use it as a paid public parking area with 110 to 120 spaces. The vacant lot lies just south of Atlantic Boulevard, between A1A and Hibiscus Avenue, west of the Bank of America building, and south of Walgreens. According to city officials, it will be used to meet the need for additional parking created by all the new development on the barrier island, and to accommodate cars that will be displaced from the Oceanside parking lot while the new parking garage is being built. The lot is owned by Pure Residence Resort, which has an active site plan development order to construct a 21-story extended stay hotel project, consisting of 240 condo-hotel units and ground floor retail. The site plan was approved by the Planning and Zoning Board earlier this year. Pure Residence Resort has not yet submitted an application for a building permit, and has agreed to lease the 1.01-acre lot to the City for one year. In December, the city’s Zoning

22 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

Board of Appeals approved a temporary use permit for the lot to be used for parking. The oneyear lease between the City and Pure Residence Resort needs to be approved by the City Commission. If the lease is approved, the parking lot could open as early as March. The City currently has a similar arrangement in place for the parking lot at 9 N. Pompano Beach Boulevard, just north of Atlantic Boulevard (the site of the old Howard Johnson’s). The City leases the property from JJ Land Realty. Jeff Lantz, the city’s parking operation manager, told the Zoning Board of Appeals the intended use of

Aerial view of proposed public parking area ©Google Maps 2020

the new lot is for “overflow parking” from the Pompano Beach Fishing Village, which is currently being developed just west of the pier. The Fishing Village already includes two restaurants – the Pompano Beach House and Oceanic – and has additional eateries, retail and a dual-branded Hilton hotel currently under construction. A special events venue with catering services is also planned. The 663-space Pier Parking Garage opened in 2016, but the City expects parking demands to surge with the development of all the remaining Fishing Village parcels by the end of 2021.

In addition, at the southeast corner of the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge, a private developer is constructing a dining and retail complex. Lantz said the temporary parking lot will provide additional parking for beachgoers and workers in the area as those new components open. He noted the parking lot of the Bank of America building, which has approximately 40 parking spaces, is currently being used on the weekends when the bank is closed. Vehicles also circulate throughout the neighborhood looking for parking along SE 1st and SE 2nd Streets, and Hibiscus Avenue. “Hopefully, this lot could pull some of that traffic out of the area and into the lot,” said Lantz. Users of the parking lot will be able to pay via the cashless Passport Parking mobile app that is used by the City of Pompano Beach. Current rates are $1.50 per hour in season (Nov.15 to April 15), and $1.25 per hour during the off-season (April 16 to Nov. 14). Users will also be able to purchase 15-minute intervals. The Passport Parking app alerts users when their parking time is about to run out, so they can add time using their phone from wherever they are. Monthly permits, currently priced at $50 per month, will also be offered, as the parking lot is anticipated to be used primarily by employees. The City’s future plans include a free park-and-ride service, operated by a third party, that would transport users of the parking lot to destinations on the barrier island within a reasonable proximity. The City’s management of the lot will provide supervised and monitored parking operations with regular patrol of the lot, said Lantz. The lot will be maintained by the city’s Public Works Department, and parking curb stops will be installed to mark individual spaces. Prior to the expiration of the temporary lease, the City will be required to replace the entire site with drought-resistant sod. The City is in the process of selecting a master developer for the Oceanside parking lot site, which is a City-owned property just southwest of the Pompano Beach Fishing Village, east of the Sands Harbor Resort and Marina, and next to the A1A fire station. In addition to the public parking garage, a 300-room hotel and a beach grocery store are planned for the site. Y FEBRUARY 2020 • pointpubs.com

Another New Restaurant Is Coming to Old Town Another new restaurant is being planned for Old Town, an area the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is developing as an arts and entertainment district. The restaurant, called Papamigos, is slated to occupy a currently vacant space at 44 NE First Street, as well as an adjacent patio area overlooking the Civic Plaza fountain. Two separate lease agreements between the CRA and the restaurant operator – one for the building, and one for the outdoor space – are scheduled to go before the CRA Board for approval this month. If approved, the restaurant could open by the end of 2020. Papamigos (“friends of Papa”) is a concept of Troy Ganter and his family, the owners of Papa’s Raw Bar and Papa’s Fish House (formerly called Papa Hughie’s Seafood World) in Lighthouse Point. Ganter describes Papamigos as a “Crasian-Mexican gastro pub with island-style vibes.” The menu includes items such as a Nacho Mama’s Roll, which is a shrimp tempura sushi roll topped with homemade queso. “It sounds crazy, but it’s delicious,” said Ganter. The restaurant will also feature sushi tacos served on deep-fried nori sheets, and regular tacos made with tortillas from local Mexican cantinas. Local fresh fish will be used for the sushi. Ganter’s family has a nationally trademarked motto: “Eat, Drink and Be Local.” The concept is “to create synergy among locals and local businesses, to pool resources and work together.” In keeping with that philosophy, Papamigos will have a strong emphasis on keeping everything as local as possible, said Ganter. The restaurant’s décor will include

artwork painted by several local artists, including Dennis Friel, who did the marine-inspired murals on the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge. Friel will paint an outside mural on the patio side, and a large mural behind the sushi bar. Papamigos will serve craft beers from several local breweries – Funky Buddha, Prosperity Brewers, 26 Degrees Brewing Company, and Odd Breed, the tap room right next door. These breweries will also create beers just for Papamigos. There will be live entertainment from local musicians in a variety of genres, including reggae, Cuban roots, soul and funk. Ganter anticipates the cost to build out the interior space, as well as the patio area, will be over $1 million. He hopes to have the leases for the property signed in February, to begin construction in March and to open the restaurant in late fall 2020. Other new establishments are being planned for Old Town, including

a hip “Southern comfort” restaurant concept, named Wood & Wire, that will occupy the building at 165 NE First Avenue. Sweets and More, a dessert catering shop, just opened at 122 N. Flagler Ave., and a coffee house, called Shack In Back, is slated to open in the same space later this year. In addition, the ground floor of the historic Bank of Pompano building at 61 NE First Street is being turned into a restaurant with outdoor dining. There are also plans to convert the 1920s medical office of Dr. George McClellan – Pompano Beach’s first doctor – into a café or wine bar. At the center of this up and coming area, the CRA is in the process of creating a new pedestrian plaza, called “The Backyard.” “We really believe in the area,” said Ganter. “Timing is everything, and we believe that now is the time to make it happen, and we’re really excited. Pompano is booming.” Ganter said a number of pop-up events are planned for Papamigos

in the coming months, including at the Pompano Beach Seafood Festival, the Las Olas Food and Wine Festival, the South Beach Seafood Festival, and Old Town Untapped. “We pop up and we serve food, we create customer awareness and we gather feedback,” he said. “It’s a great way to do market research.” To stay tuned for a Papamigos pop-up, go to @ eatdrinkandbeloco on Facebook and Instagram.

Pompano Beach Voters Will Decide Three Issues In March 2020 Referendum

On March 17, 2020, Pompano Beach voters will have the opportunity to decide if they want the two-year terms that city commissioners serve to be increased to fouryear terms, if the terms of city commissioners should be staggered, and if municipal elections should be held in March, rather than in November. The City Commission voted last July to place the three issues on the ballot. The issues must be decided by voters in a referendum because they involve amending the City charter. Each of the proposed charter amendments can stand alone, and must be approved by a majority of the voters. Staggering the terms of city commissioners is the provision the Commission considered most important in changing the Pompano Beach elections process. Currently, the City elects its commissioners all at once, which could leave the commission without any experienced leadership. Staggering the terms is seen as a way to maintain continuity of leadership. In order to stagger election years for commissioners, commissioners from odd-numbered districts who are elected at the next scheduled municipal election would have an initial term of three years, and then all commissioners elected in future elections would have terms of equal length, either of two years or four years, depending on what voters decide. The term length of the Mayor-at-Large seat would remain four years. Four-year terms are being proposed for district commissioners as a way to help mitigate the tendency of “continuous campaigning” that can be fostered by twoyear terms. The proposal to transition all future municipal elections from November to the second Tuesday of March is meant give voters the chance to focus solely on local candidates and issues. The transition would be accomplished by moving the next scheduled municipal general election in November of 2020 to March of 2021, and by extending the current terms of the mayor and commissioners from November of 2020 to March of 2021. Also, try to reduce your debt load. It’s not always easy, but the lower your debt payments, the more money you’ll have available to invest. Here’s another resolution: Build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a liquid account. Such a fund will help you avoid dipping into long-term investments for emergencies, like a new furnace or major car repair. Another key resolution: Make sure your protection needs are being met with the proper amounts of life and disability insurance. Finally, resolve not to overreact to market volatility. You’ll help yourself greatly by following an appropriate investment strategy in every market environment. Work to turn these resolutions into realities. Your efforts could pay off well beyond 2014.

In Case You Missed It

In The Know BY JEFF LEVINE

Event space rendering

LOTS OF NEWS YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HEARD ABOUT IN POMPANO BEACH THIS MONTH, SO LET'S GET RIGHT TO IT. STATE OF THE CITY: The Mayor's annual Pompano Beach overview happens Feb. 24 at the Marriott. There are two issues I hope to see addressed in detail: • Traffic The City needs a comprehensive plan to address the rapidly increasing time it takes to get across town. Traffic congestion will only get worse as more and more new residences are completed. (By our count, there are over 10,000 new units planned for Pompano Beach in the coming years.) A wide-ranging plan that legitimately tackles this problem is essential. So far, the City has not shown much vision on meeting this challenge. • Livability Vs Growth The CRA and the City have done a tremendous job in attracting new construction. Some would say too good. We've seen the City Commission address this in several specific cases including the McNab Park complex and the Hidden Harbour development; attempting to meet both developers and residents needs by forcing compromises. So far, so good but this is an issue that is not going away. The number two natural resource of Pompano Beach is our blue skies. (Beach and Ocean are #1, duh.) We need to balance the desire for growth with making sure this still feels like a beach town. The case by case compromises have been a good start, but we'd like to see a broader vision to ensure we don't lose what makes Pompano Beach a terrific place. FISHING VILLAGE DEVELOPMENT: The recent potential addition of a catering facility has alarmed some residents in the A1A/ Pompano Beach Boulevard area. The spot on the southeast corner had been expected to be occupied by several restaurants and/ or shops. The biggest concern residents have is that the new building has a peak roof line of 58 feet, considerably higher than anticipated. (Full disclosure: I live right by the Fishing Village although am not directly affected by the building). Tim Hernandez, the developer of the Village, shared his thoughts with me via e-mail: " No surprise there, those same people were opposed to the entire Fishing Village redevelopment.... The height of the roof deck is 41’-10”...[and] the open air roof deck is 58’. The AOD allows a height of 105’ but in an effort to be good neighbors [all development] has been limited to 58’... The height is similar to...Oceanic, the new Hilton Hotel, and Beach House." Hernandez reminded me, "One thing lacking in the community

30 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

is a quality event space [for local community events...The] operators also expect to bring corporate meetings and retreats to Pompano ... now being held in NYC, Boca, Miami or Fort Lauderdale. This will benefit local entertainers, florists, furniture rental and many other small businesses.” I also asked Hernandez if he was concerned that a rather large building primarily used for private events might hurt the "Delraylike" walkability that was an important part of the projects goals. He responded, "the whole development was designed to be walkable with narrow streets, wide sidewalks, small blocks and buildings pulled close to the streets. Whether we put one more restaurant or this venue won’t change that." So far, the CRA, Hernandez and his team have done an impressive job with complex. I do hope there will be enough activity and gathering spot type places for people from around the county to decide it is worth the drive to Pompano Beach. IMPORTANT LOCAL ELECTION: On Mar, 17, Pompano Beach will vote on whether to make City Commissioner terms four years, to stagger the terms and to move elections to March instead of November. (They had been in March until just recently). On the pro side, moving the election to March will allow greater focus on local issues since it wouldn't compete against presidential or other major elections. On the con side, less people tend to vote in March elections. In a rapidly changing city, we want as many people to vote as possible. We also don't want to allow power brokers and other influencers to exert disproportionate control over city politics. I would urge you to go to the polls on Mar. 17 to vote against future March elections. (Yes, I get the irony.) One more suggestion: make sure to vote before heading to any St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Drinking and voting don't mix. (Or do they?)

It Dawned On Me

Falling in Love with the Beach All Over Again IN THIS MONTH OF LOVE, I’VE RETURNED TO MY FIRST SIGNIFICANT OTHER: THE BEACH. BUT FIRST, PLEASE ENDURE A BRIEF RICHARDS FAMILY HISTORY LESSON. We first moved here after staycationing locally one summer week. Rather than flying north to see family (our usual trip), we drove 30 minutes east and settled in at an oceanfront hotel, behaving like tourists 24/7 (the Mai-Kai! Pier 66! Heidi’s Ice Cream, for the old-timers). We loved it so much that we bought a little condo, a “vacation home,” 30 minutes from our actual home. We began spending weekends here, fell in love, and moved here permanently the next year. That was 15 years ago, and I love it just as much now as I did then. But life happens, and those moments actually at the beach are rare. Stuff gets in the way, and although the beach is close by, I don’t go as often as I should, never mind that just going is a production: Towels? Check. Chairs? Check. Sunscreen? Check. Some days, just the thought of packing for the beach is enough to nix the idea altogether. While we’re lucky enough to live where other people vacation, most of us don’t take full advantage of what 2017’s nearly 13 million visitors to Broward County* already know – this is a great place not just to live, but to visit! Lucky us. After a difficult year personally, friends and family exhorted me

BY DAWNE RICHARDS

to do something for myself – visit an exotic locale; go on a cruise; see the Mayan ruins. Bah! After years of corporate travel, the idea of “going somewhere” holds little appeal. Plus, logistics: Grandkids. Animals. Mail. The list goes on and on. However, since we do live where people vacation, I decided to take the funds I’d spend touring these exotic locales and spend it right here: I rented a fully furnished oceanfront condo. It’s five minutes from my house, which means that every.single.day (for 365 days, if you’re counting!) I get a mini-vacation. Whether I’m there for 30 minutes or overnight, I get a daily dose of vitamin sea, with no need to board the animals, hold the mail, or pack my bags. Plus, I have a great place to host those pesky beloved friends and family who love to visit Florida, like the other 13 million people who do the same. Just two months into this adventure, I can say unequivocally that it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I arrived with all I needed: a toothbrush. Mornings, I enjoy coffee with friends on the balcony; evenings, my son and I head over to play chess while being serenaded by the ocean waves. When I need five minutes of serenity, I’ve got it. My granddaughter and I are creating priceless lifelong memories at “Yiayia’s beach house.” I strongly recommend giving this a try; you can find some amazing places for the off-season at very reasonable prices. And I bet you’ll fall back in love with the #1 reason most of us came here in the first place.

COUPLES WHO WORK TOGETHER

How do they do it? Impossible for some and a blessing

for others, we asked four local couples to share secrets of their success by having their lives so closely intertwined. Two of the couples began their professional lives together soon after becoming a couple. All four couples have children and some have pets as well. They lead very full lives indeed!

Elin & Andy TROUSDALE { LE BISTRO RESTAURANT }

How many years have you been a couple? 22 How many years have you worked together? 21 What do you each do to maintain your independence? In addition to all things food related, we each have separate hobbies and interests. Andy enjoys classic automobile restoration and gardening. Elin enjoys biking, Pilates, retail therapy and lunch with friends. How do you balance your business and leisure time together as a couple? Most of our leisure time together revolves around food and dining. It’s a passion we both have. When we are not working in the restaurant, we spend time dining out and cooking together at home. The business of all things food related is a constant in our lives as a couple and as a family, our son included.

Elin and Andy celebrated Elin’s birthday in the South of France

What is your advice for couples considering working together? Praise each other, know when to be silent and when speak up. Understand each others strong and weak points and create a balance. Verbal and non-verbal communication is very important. Create a non-verbal language with your partner. It’s like a dance: follow and lead, lead and follow. Practice and you’ll each know what to do without saying a word. How will you celebrate Valentine’s Day? We will be working hard serving others so they may have a special Valentine’s Day.

It’s important to spend time every once in awhile doing the things you love on your own time. How do you balance your business and leisure time together as a couple? Balance is the key. We try not to talk about work during our free time. Instead we talk about the good things in life like family and our daughter. What is your advice for couples considering working together? Always have a separate work space and different responsibilities. Communication is also a key element for success. How will you celebrate Valentine’s Day? We celebrate everyday!

{ AVENGER FLIGHT GROUP COMMERCIAL AVIATION SIMULATION }

How many years have you been a couple? We’ve been together for 26 years. And we just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve. How many years have you worked together? My husband, Eduardo, started the company seven years ago. I joined four years ago as it grew. Ed is the Senior Vice President of Operations -Technical and Infrastructure. I am the Director of Human Resources. He was one of the founding members. We operate in four U.S. locations and four in foreign countries.

What do you each do to maintain your independence? We naturally spend some time apart because Eduardo travels often for business. When I travel, Eduardo stays home with the kids. We also have some independent activities we each do. How do you balance your business and leisure time together as a couple? We both enjoy boating together, and when we do, we’re with friends and/or family so we don’t discuss business. Same for when we go out for dinner or are spending time with our three sons.

What is your advice for couples considering working together? If you’re going to be partners, make sure you share the same goals and be willing to compromise on how to reach them. In our case, I report to a different senior vice president, so we have different responsibilities How will you celebrate Valentine’s Day? We will most likely with a boat ride and a nice meal out.

SAFETY PALOOZA PHOTOS BY JAY PETKOV

In the spirit of safety first, the Lighthouse Christian School hosted a Safety Palooza in January. Families came out to celebrate our first responders. Kids had the chance to interact with members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office specialty units, marine patrol, K-9 dog unit, Lighthouse Point and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and Police. There was also a team on site distributing fingerprint I.D. cards for children. There were motorcycles, fire trucks, humvees, jaws of life and even a robotic camera! While safety was the star of the show, kids also enjoyed a bounce house, dunk tank, a Florida fun train and carnival games and plenty of food and drink.

Dining Out Oceanic. AMERICAN • SEAFOOD The long awaited Oceanic on Pompano Beach lives up to the hype. Along with stunning ocean views, the restaurant offers a comprehensive menu with an emphasis on seafood. If you are looking for a standout salad, the watermelon arugula salad with grilled shrimp is a perfect choice. The ingredients really shined with top notch shrimp served over juicy watermelon and peppery arugula all dressed with a light vinaigrette. The shrimp and grits were prepared traditionally and packed with flavor. For meat lovers, the baby back ribs were melting off the bone and there was enough for a doggy bag. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant boasts dazzling architecture inspired by the great ocean liners of years past. Last Resort

Solitude and Utah’s Desert Beauty at Amangiri BY RICHARD ROSSER

Modern luxury hotels are pushing the envelope in terms of locations and experiences. Disconnecting from the chaos of modern life and escaping to unique landscapes used to involve tents and 4x4 vehicles. Now, luxury hospitality operators like Aman Resorts are creating locations in desolate locations like Wadi Rum in Jordan and the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia With room rates at Amangiri running between $500 to $3,000 per night, this is a premium property with all that one expects in terms of service and amenities. Hot-air ballooning over the desert at sunrise? Helicopter or walking tours of the Grand Canyon? Boat tours of the vast Lake Powell? The isolation of the resort brings peace but its location is close to some of America’s great western landmarks and experiences. Seeking more solitude? The resort recently opened 10 luxury “tent pavilions” between 1,800 to 2,800 square feet with one and two-bedroom options. They hate the term “glamping” but this is a good example of it... and it looks amazing.
