Raising Children

There is a midrash that when a child is growing in the womb, an angel comes and visits the child. The angel lights a candle above the child’s head, and proceeds to teach the entire Torah. This makes the child very happy, and so the child kicks the mother in joy.

Then the angel prepares the child to come into the world by wrapping the child in three special coverings: a covering for the body, a covering for the mind, and a covering for the soul. These coverings protect the child for their entrance into the world. As our children grow, tradition teaches that it is incumbent upon us, as parents and as a community, to guide children to develop the tools to remove those coverings.

The first is for the body, and we remove that covering when we celebrate the child’s birth, announcing and consecrating the child’s name. As our children grow, we help them discover their

only lifted when our children grow to full adulthood. This is sometimes celebrated under the Chuppah, by the lifting of the veil.

We must help our children discover their spiritual selves. We need to teach them how to experience awe and wonder. We need to teach them how to overcome disappointment, and how to persevere when life is tough. We need to teach them to cultivate curiosity, how to appreciate art and beauty, how to weep in shared anguish, or even in joy. We need to teach them how to make moral choices, and how to wrestle with ethical decisions. We need to teach them wisdom, compassion, justice, awareness, gratitude, resilience, and humility.

We must be as deliberate in growing our children’s spirituality as we are about growing their bodies and minds.

I am so proud of all the ways Temple Beth El partners with our children and youth in helping them to grow, especially in cultivating their spirituality. I love watching our children discover their heritage in religious school, seeing young

We do all we can to feed them healthy foods (sometimes), and to grow their physical capacities. If they express an interest, we help them to explore that passion. If they experience obstacles, we help them to overcome them.

When we celebrate Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and lift the cover from the Torah scroll, we rejoice in the ongoing evolution of our childrens’ minds. We provide our children the best education we can offer. We teach them to read, to write, and to develop skills in language, mathematics, science, and history. We help them learn to process their ideas, to express their opinions, and to grow their capacity for logic and reason.

But too often, we forget that after Bar/Bat Mitzvah, our most important task remains. For the covering of the soul is

people volunteer as Madrichim–teacher assistants in younger children’s classrooms. I’m excited to see a renaissance of youth activity as the pandemic continues to recede – with our children’s and youth choirs, our teen band, our summer CIT’s in the ELC, opportunities for community service and social justice work, and so many other areas of Temple life.

A child comes into the world with the raw ingredients for living a holy and fulfilled life, but it is our collective responsibility to help a child refine all the gifts God and we give them – body, mind, and spirit.

NEW SERVICE LOCATIONS THIS YEAR!

It Begins with Aleph

Did you know that we start preparing our students for Bar/ Bat Mitzvah on the first week of Kindergarten Religious School?!? Our educators and clergy work together throughout the year to be sure we are teaching prayers effectively and with a huge dose of fun in our weekly Tefillah (prayer) gathering with students. Building this foundation gives our students the knowledge they will need for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and provides them with a sense of comfort and feeling of belonging to the larger Jewish community when they are in services throughout their lives.

Additionally, our students learn Modern

Hebrew every week with a native Israeli speaking teacher that enhances their prayer learning while being fun and physically active.

We are teaching prayers effectively and with a huge dose of fun in our weekly Tefillah (prayer) gathering with students.

Hebrew Through Movement embraces the “sound to print philosophy”, mirroring how we raise our children, speaking to them as babies and toddlers and then introducing them to the letters and reading as they already “know” English.

Feeling at ease with the prayers and Hebrew at a young age reduces the natural anxiety that most Bar/Bat Mitzvah students have. These best practices in the religious school are coupled with attending Shabbat services, in person or via livestream.

Each year a group of our Beth El Teens participates as counselors and staff.

A Camp Jenny Story

Hello my name is Stephanie Jaro and I had the wonderful opportunity and privilege to be a counselor at Camp Jenny 2023 this year. This was my first year ever partaking in Camp Jenny after hearing about it for years. I was chosen along with many other passionate and driven people to take part in this amazing program. Camp Jenny has been around for 30 years, giving impoverished children in Atlanta, grades kindergarten through fifth, the opportunity to experience summer camp during Memorial Day weekend. Camp Jenny is about so much more than giving these kids the experience of summer camp and being there this past weekend has shown me just that.

There is a magic in Camp Jenny, something really special. Being able to

experience it has left a permanent impact on me. The emotion, feelings, and hard work that is put into giving these kids the best experience possible is something that will forever stick with me. I was placed as a junior counselor in a bunk with three 6- and 7-year-olds and three other counselors. We all worked so hard to give these kids the best time, and while yes it was hard, it was one hundred percent worth it to see these kids running around on the field with not a care in the world. The reward that we all felt seeing smiling campers face their fears and try new things is unforgettable. Camp Jenny is so much more than just a weekend to give kids the experience of summer camp, it is love and kindness and care that fills each one of these children and creates something beautiful.

To get involved in next year’s Camp Jenny, please email Ross Glinkenhouse at rglinkenhouse@ tbeboca.org. Teen Applications will be available in December.

Summer Fun

rgraf@tbeboca.org

As a child, I loved summer camp. Day camp, sleep-away…it didn’t matter. The less stressful pace, few demands, and pure fun was a winning combination for me. At the Beth El Early Learning Center’s Summer Adventure Camp we create that feeling for the children that attend our program. Our primary goal is FUN! We are unique in that we only offer summer camp for young children ages 2-4. This allows us to focus completely on activities and special events that are meant for them. Each week brings a different theme and new adventures. The fun includes everything you’d want in summer camp including shows, bounce houses, petting zoos, Kona ice truck visits, sweet summer treats, specialty days, and more. Our Splash Pad is perfect for cooling off from the hot Florida summer sun.

We’ve Almost Got You Covered

It was only two years ago at the Beck Family Campus when we opened our new “Natural Themed” playground to provide another space for children to enjoy the outdoors. But there was something missing: a shade structure on this playground which will keep our kids protected from the harsh Florida sun.

$5,000 away from being “covered.”

As an unbudgeted expense, we rely on your generosity and support to bring this shade project fundraiser to completion. With your help, we hope to have the shade structure installed and completed at the beginning of 2024.

We thank you, our community thanks you, and no doubt, some much “cooler” Beck Family Campus children in the future thank you.

It is perhaps most noticeable today, when we are all no doubt experiencing the summer heat.

Costs for this shade structure, which will reduce sun and heat exposure for our children, will be in the vicinity of $50,000. Temple Beth El’s Brotherhood stepped up with an incredible matching gift for the first $25,000 donated to honor Bruce Moldow for the 2023 Brotherhood Golf Outing!

As you read this, we are roughly

A special thanks to all those who have supported this meaningful project as of May 30, 2023.

Art All Day

This past April, we offered a sold-out Art All Day trip that was led by expert art historian, Amy Herman, with Rabbi Jessica Mates and Cantor Lori Brock, and was generously supported by Temple Beth El’s Project Nuremberg, underwritten by Jay and Marilyn Weinberg, which provides programming that explores the Holocaust, Law and Ethics and Friends of Music and Arts

As one participant wrote: ’Thank you for including me in this spectacular day. I just loved it. The speakers were terrific, it was educational, and the attendees were warm and welcoming. I look forward to attending more programs like this when they appear. From beginning to end, this was a well-coordinated and well-thought-out special event.’

We look forward to a delicious challahbaking workshop in August led by Tami Weisman, famous for her gorgeous homemade challahs posted on Facebook. This program is co-sponsored by ELC Parenthood and Religious School Parent Tribes.

Inspired by challah making, we are delighted to welcome the amazing Idan Chabasov, aka the Challah Prince and Paula Shoyer, aka the Kosher Baker as guest speakers at the Annual Sisterhood Luncheon in December. Expect this to be another sold-out event, so get your tickets as soon as they are available (late Fall).

Stay tuned, Temple Beth El Sisterhood members: exciting things are coming your way!

The Expert In Orthopedic Spine Surgery

Dr. Norton is a world-leading expert in minimally invasive spine surgery and in office treatment of vertebral compression fractures with the kyphoplasty procedure. Dr Norton spends time when not seeing patients, teaching other surgeons cutting-edge minimally invasive surgical techniques. He recently even wrote a book chapter for a major spine textbook on how to do the kyphoplasty procedure in the office.

Throughout his career, Dr. Norton has had a strong interest in academic medicine and has been actively involved in teaching and research. He has authored multiple publications on a variety of topics related to spine surgery in numerous peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. He has received several research grants and has presented his research at both national and international conferences.

Compression fractures of the spine occur most often in people with osteoporosis, after a fall, after a forceful cough or sneeze, or simply from bending over to tie shoes. Fortunately, he can treat patients with an easy solution called a Kyphoplasty, performed in my office in about 10-minutes. After numbing the area, he will simply place a small needle into the broken bone under x-ray guidance. He can then inject a small amount of bone “glue” to stabilize the broken bone. This is a permanent fix and serves to get rid of the pain from the broken bone and prevent further collapse of the bone so you don’t become deformed and hunched over. The pain is gone immediately and you can walk out of the office with just a Band- Aid! Skilled in the most advanced surgical techniques and emerging technologies, Dr. Robert Norton offers expertise in all aspects of spine care. His expertise and excellent surgical outcomes have earned him the nickname, “Miracle Worker.”
