Embracing Change: A Journey Through Transformation and Growth
As the seasons shift, so too does our community. We watch the familiar ebb and flow, and while a part of us often resists these changes, the truth is that change is essential. Growth can’t happen in stillness—it thrives in the transitions and moments when the world around us begins to evolve.
I won’t use the old caterpillar-turned-butterfly metaphor. Still, the sentiment holds: change challenges us because it disrupts our routines, sense of comfort, and attachment to what we know. And yet, in these moments of discomfort, we find new opportunities, perspectives, and strengths.
As we prepare to say goodbye to the warmth of summer and welcome the crispness of fall, let us embrace the inevitable changes around us. In this issue, we reflect on the shifts in our surroundings and dive into the
inspiring stories and experiences that these changes bring. From Alex’s Safe Place - A Place to Heal, offering a sanctuary for growth, to the mesmerizing glass art of Dale Chihuly in his hometown of Tacoma, Washington, and the vibrant community spirit of The Grand Cinema, our cherished nonprofit movie theater, this magazine invites you to explore these stories and much more. Let these pages guide you through a season of transformation and discovery.
Here’s to new beginnings, growth, and the beauty of embracing what’s next.

Med spas and wellness
by PATRICE ALLEN
Medical spas, or med spas, are revolutionizing the wellness and beauty industry by combining advanced medical treatments with the relaxing atmosphere of a spa. They offer a unique blend of aesthetics, wellness and innovation, creating a sanctuary where clients can rejuvenate both body and mind. They provide the perfect blend of aesthetics, wellness and innovation, offering a sanctuary where clients can receive advanced medical treatments in a serene, luxurious environment. With a focus on personalized care, holistic wellness and cutting-edge technology, medical spas provide a comprehensive approach to beauty and well-being, making them the ultimate destination for those seeking rejuvenation and relaxation.
Innovative Treatments
Med spas stand at the forefront of innovation, offering cuttingedge treatments that go beyond traditional spa services. From laser therapies and chemical peels to minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, med spas utilize the latest technology to provide effective, non-surgical solutions. These advancements ensure clients achieve their desired results with minimal downtime, all within a soothing environment that promotes healing and relaxation. Advanced technologies like radiofrequency and ultrasound are used to promote skin tightening and rejuvenation, offering less invasive alternatives to traditional procedures. These innovative treatments are continually updated to incorporate the latest scientific advancements, ensuring that clients receive the most current and effective care available.
Personalized Care
Each client receives a tailored treatment plan designed to address their unique needs and goals. Experienced medical professionals conduct thorough consultations to understand individual concerns, allowing them to recommend the most appropriate services. This bespoke approach ensures optimal results and enhances overall well-being. Personalized care extends beyond just the treatments; it includes follow-up sessions and at-home care recommendations to maintain and enhance the results. This level of attention and customization makes clients feel valued and cared for, creating a trusting relationship between the client and the medical spa staff, ultimately leading to higher satisfaction and better outcomes.
Holistic Wellness
Embracing a holistic approach, many medical spas integrate wellness services that promote physical, mental and emotional health. Beyond aesthetic enhancements, clients can benefit from wellness therapies such as acupuncture, nutritional counseling and stress management programs. This comprehensive focus on health and wellbeing distinguishes medical spas as true sanctuaries for rejuvenation, helping clients achieve a balanced and healthy lifestyle. The incorporation of practices such as meditation, yoga and mindfulness further supports clients’ overall wellbeing, making the experience at a medical spa not just about looking good but also feeling great from the inside out.
Finding the Perfect Med Spa: Your guide to choosing the right team
Selecting the right med spa and team is crucial for achieving your aesthetic and wellness goals. Start by researching reputable med spas with positive reviews and licensed medical professionals on staff. Schedule consultations to discuss your needs and assess their expertise. During visits, note the facility’s cleanliness and ambiance. Ask about the range of services and the technology they use, ensuring they offer FDA-approved treatments. Evaluate their personalized care approach — your med spa should tailor treatments to your unique needs and provide clear post-procedure instructions. Finally, consider the rapport with the staff. A compassionate, knowledgeable team that listens to your concerns and explains procedures clearly can make a significant difference in your med spa experience.
Relaxing Environment
The tranquil ambiance of a medical spa enhances the overall experience, combining the clinical expertise of a medical facility with the serene atmosphere of a traditional spa. Soft lighting, soothing music and luxurious amenities create a peaceful environment where clients can unwind and de-stress, making their treatments even more enjoyable. The attention to detail in creating a calming atmosphere, from aromatherapy to plush furnishings, ensures that every visit feels like a retreat. This relaxing environment not only enhances the effectiveness of treatments but also promotes mental well-being, helping clients feel rejuvenated and refreshed both during and after their visit.
These minimally invasive procedures deliver natural-looking results, helping clients look and feel their best.
Advanced Skin Care
Medical spas offer advanced skin-care treatments that go beyond over-the-counter products. Utilizing medicalgrade ingredients and state-of-the-art technology, these treatments address a variety of skin concerns, from aging and acne to hyperpigmentation and rosacea. Clients leave with radiant, youthful skin that reflects the expertise and care provided by skilled professionals. Treatments like microneedling, PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy and customized facials are tailored to each client’s skin type and concerns, ensuring the best possible results. Regular skin assessments and adjustments to the skincare regimen ensure ongoing improvement and adaptation to changing skin needs, providing long-term benefits and healthier, more vibrant skin.
Non-Surgical Solutions
For those seeking aesthetic improvements without surgery, medical spas provide a range of non-surgical options. Treatments like Botox, dermal fillers and body contouring allow clients to enhance their appearance without the risks and recovery time associated with surgery. These minimally invasive procedures deliver natural-looking results, helping clients look and feel their best. Advanced techniques such as thread lifts, which provide a subtle lift to sagging skin, and non-surgical rhinoplasty, offer clients more choices in their aesthetic journey. The variety of non-surgical solutions ensures that clients can achieve their desired look in a way that fits their lifestyle and comfort level, making beauty enhancements more accessible and appealing.

By continually updating their equipment and techniques, medical spas stay at the forefront of the industry, offering clients the benefits of the latest research and developments in aesthetic and wellness treatments.
Northwest Medical Arts
WHERE MEDICINE MEETS ART, PAIRED WITH A PASSION FOR COMMUNITY
by ELIZABETH RAY
Since opening the doors of Northwest Medical Arts (NWMA) in University Place in April of 2023, owners Shanti Benoit, ARNP, and Heather Grods, ARNP, continue to showcase their passion and love of beauty by integrating medicine and art, where they utilize the latest treatments and techniques to help people feel their best selves while highlighting their innate, natural beauty.
“We aren’t trying to define beauty but rather acknowledge and showcase the beauty that everyone is born with,” Heather explains. “When one feels beautiful, that translates into confidence that transcends all aspects of one’s life and relationships. We use our skills to act as a mirror to show our clients how beautiful and powerful they already are. That ripple effect has the power to create positive changes in people and communities.”
As a comprehensive skin health and rejuvenation center, Heather and Shanti treat skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, melasma, sun damage and general anti-aging. Their services range from Botox, dermal fillers, laser hair removal, microneedling, PRP (platelet-rich plasma), BBL (broadband light treatments), HALO, IV therapies and lipotropic fat-burning shots.
Their more than 17 years of combined experience allows Heather and Shanti to set realistic expectations and make the best recommendations for their clients, educating their patients about the aging process, the different treatment options available, and allowing them to make an informed decision — without high-pressure sales.
What truly makes Northwest Medical Arts stand out is through their membership program, in which a portion of their revenue goes back to a local nonprofit at the end of each quarter. “It is in
our heart that as our business grows, our social impact can reach further. From sponsoring blood drives to hosting community events, to creating ‘Kindness Week’ and having all of Pierce County officially proclaim it, we are here to be a positive presence in our community,” notes Shanti. “We believe that together, by fostering kindness, we can make a lasting impact on the lives around us.”
As nurses, Shanti and Heather have a heart for people and service. Heather’s military service has shaped her as a provider and has driven how NWMA gives back to veterans and their families. Donating to nonprofits that focus on veterans, such as Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation, and as a “thank you,” they offer military and veterans special Northwest Medical Arts discounts.
Additional nonprofits they have worked with/ volunteered for include Associated Ministries, Multicultural Child and Family Hope Center, and Rebuilding Hope. “These are amazing organizations doing incredible things in our community. They inspire us to grow so we can support their efforts in a bigger way each year,” Shanti affirms. She and Heather are also proud members of the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce and have worked closely with the City of University Place.
Having the opportunity to immerse themselves within the local business community, the two share that it has been a gift to meet other like-minded, small-business owners. “The connections we have made with our local business community is invaluable, and seeing other women entrepreneurs who are community-focused has been an amazing experience,” Heather says. “We believe that if we can combine our efforts with other small businesses that share our vision of creating a stronger, more connected community, we can have a major social impact.”
Alex’s Safe PlaceA Place to Heal
CONTINUING ALEX’S LEGACY
by RACHEL KELLY
Patti Danner started Alex’s Safe Place, a local nonprofit where both people and animals can heal, because she has a deep understanding of loss. “My son Alex and I were connected at the hip before he died,” says Patti. “Here (on the farm with the animals) I feel him. Seeing others heal heals me too — and in this way I communicate his legacy.”
Patti lost her son in 2020. Heartbroken and under extreme mental stress, it seemed that no relief could be found. Eventually she forced herself to go see her horse Moki, and it was there that she found solace, understanding and comfort in
the unconditional love of her horse. In time she began to look beyond herself, and what she saw bothered her. She saw horses being sold to kill buyers — buyers who would bring the horses to slaughter before their time. She saw animals without a home. She saw owners whose animals weren’t quite the right fit.
She also saw others grieving; others who were broken. She looked around and saw people who were much like her. She simply had to do something. Perhaps others could find comfort in the same way that she had? Surely others needed the same support, the same simple understanding, that she had received.
Their love and company is simpler, more straightforward, and in it many find that they can simply “be.”
In 2022, Alex’s Safe Place was born — an animal therapy service for those who have experienced loss and brokenness. Normally such services are very expensive, as there are a lot of costs associated with keeping animals healthy and the land that they live on thriving. To take the burden of cost off the shoulders of those who are weary, all who wish to receive services at Alex’s Safe Place are generously sponsored.
At Alex’s Safe Place, there are not just horses! There are also mini donkeys, bunnies, alpacas, and one very sweet kangaroo. All levels of gentle interaction are acceptable — it’s not necessary that participants pet or hug the animals. Different people need different things, and some people simply prefer to interact with the animals by being around them. Their love and company is simpler, more straightforward, and in it many find that they can simply “be.” In the future, Patti hopes to offer these services to children through day camps that teach mutual trust, empathy and understanding.
Healing goes both ways, as the animals often have a history themselves before finding rest on the farm. Alex’s Safe Place really is a place of rest, providing a light in seemingly hopeless situations.
To support Alex’s Safe Place, you can attend their upcoming auction on November 16 at the Environmental Services Building in Chambers Bay. For more information and details on events, pictures of the animals, or information on becoming a sponsor, please visit their website at AlexsSafePlace.org.
The Grand Cinema: Our Nonprofit Movie Theater
Your support could save the Grand
The Grand Cinema has a well-documented history of enriching and enhancing the cultural vitality of Tacoma through film. So does the Merlino Arts Center, which houses the cinema. The Center was built in 1925 and was originally occupied by the Washington State International Order of Odd Fellows. The building was used for meetings, dances and social events until participation in the order slacked off after WWII. Events continued in the building until its purchase by the Merlino family in 1982.
by RACHEL KELLY
The building has been filled with the arts since then. However, its landmark community patronage to the arts may be in danger. Save the Grand! is a local initiative for the purchase of the building by The Grand Cinema from the Merlino family.
“This is a perfect opportunity for The Grand Cinema to secure its future and grow as a nonprofit,” shares Rachel Marecle, chief development officer for The Grand. “We must avoid the fate of an outside buyer coming in and repurposing the building or raising rents so high no one can afford it. We have seen it happen in Seattle two times (Harvard Exit and Grand Illusion). The
Merlino Arts Center is a one-of-a-kind cultural hub in Tacoma/Pierce County, home to the Tacoma City Ballet, Dukesbay Theater, Corina Bakery, several arts studios and healing arts. We must preserve this community gem.”
The Grand Cinema itself has functioned as a nonprofit cinema since 1997 with two paid staff and a host of volunteers. Since then, they have grown to an organization that partners with a local booker and art curator to select films that contribute to the vitality and education of our community. They host film camps, special series and events, and support local filmmakers and artists. Their work is made possible by volunteers who do everything from cleaning the theater between showings to selling concessions and is supported by members who enjoy discounts on movie screenings along with other benefits.
You can be a part of saving the Grand by donating to their click-andpledge campaign online at GrandCinema.com/home and clicking
“Save the Grand.” To purchase the building, they need to reach their goal of $5.5 million by June 30, 2025. As of August 2024, they have over 1,100 individual donors and have already raised $4 million of the $5.5 million goal. “We are so grateful for the overwhelming support of our community,” Rachel smiles. “The Grand Cinema is a special, inclusive space that embraces this community and welcomes everyone. That is why so many people support this fundraising campaign.”
As Wendell Ratliff, marketing and sponsorship manager for The Grand Cinema, adds, “I expected our campaign to receive support,
but the amount of people I run into that ask me how we are doing on our campaign, the amount of folks who let me know that they can’t imagine our city without an independent art house theater, truly astounds me. It’s easy to get caught up in the work of it all and forget just how irreplaceable a community-centered space like The Grand is!”
Show your support to help save the beloved Grand Cinema today to ensure a bright future for this iconic community staple.

Discover local art and meet the makers
by ELIZABETH RAY
The Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour, an artistic tradition that has flourished for over three decades, captivates art lovers and the local community. Founded in 1993 by a group of dedicated Gig Harbor artists and craftspeople, the tour was born out of a desire to offer the public a unique glimpse into the creative process. This year, the free event, led by President Lea Basile-Lazarus, celebrates its 31st consecutive year, with 44 artists showcasing their work across 25 destinations.
Visitors to this year’s tour can expect a rich tapestry of art forms to explore, ranging from stone sculptures and watercolor paintings to ceramics, jewelry, woodworking, and much more. The diversity of mediums reflects the vibrant creativity thriving in Gig Harbor. While many artists will demonstrate their craft during the tour, those who share studio spaces might not have the opportunity to do so. However, all are eager to engage with visitors, sharing their techniques, inspirations, and the stories behind their work.
The Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour serves as an artistic showcase and educational platform, offering the community a chance to witness the intricacies of artistic creation. "We screen our artists so that all are accomplished and knowledgeable in what they do," says Basile-Lazarus, highlighting the tour’s commitment to quality and expertise. This focus on education extends to visitors of all ages, particularly children, who might otherwise lack exposure to the arts due to diminishing funding for arts education in schools.
Participating in the tour offers numerous benefits to artists and the community, including a unique once-a-year opportunity to acquire art. Artists can share their processes, educate visitors about their craft, sell their work, and promote the vibrant artistic community of Gig Harbor.
For visitors, the experience is both educational and enriching, offering a deeper appreciation for the arts and the opportunity to meet local artists and support local talent by purchasing original pieces directly from the artists.
Beyond the studios, the Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour invites participants to fully immerse themselves in the charm of the local area. Whether enjoying a picnic in a park, dining at one of Gig Harbor’s fine restaurants, or exploring the waterfront shops, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Out-of-town visitors can easily find accommodations in local hotels and bed and breakfasts, making participating in the event convenient.
This year’s tour is bolstered by the support of local sponsors, including Print Solutions, Land Use and Property Law, Gessel Painting, Remax, Windermere, Penninsula Art League, Anderson Homes, Best Western, and BECU, which serves as the Open Studio Tour partner. Their contributions and a grant from the City of Gig Harbor’s Creative Art Grants Program ensure that the Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour remains a cherished tradition for years to come.
For more information and to plan your visit, check out their website at GigHarborOpenStudioTour.org. This year’s tour will take place from September 20 - 22, 2024, with free self-guided tours available from 10 am to 5 pm.

Addressing Dry Mouth
Causes and prevention of dental decay and tooth loss
Dry mouth, or xerostomia, is a condition characterized by an insufficient production of saliva. This issue, which can significantly impact oral health, becomes more prevalent with age and is a major cause of dental decay and tooth loss among the elderly.
Causes of Dry Mouth
Several factors contribute to dry mouth. Medications are a primary cause; many prescription and over-the-counter drugs list dry mouth as a side effect. These include antihistamines, decongestants, painkillers, diuretics, and medications for hypertension, depression and anxiety.
Medical conditions can also lead to dry mouth. Autoimmune diseases like Sjögren’s syndrome, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease are notable contributors. Additionally, cancer treatments, particularly radiation therapy to the head and neck, can damage salivary glands and reduce saliva production.
Lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption exacerbate dry mouth. Dehydration, often due to inadequate fluid intake or excessive caffeine consumption, is another significant factor.
Preventing Dental Decay and Tooth Loss
Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health by neutralizing acids produced by bacteria, washing away food particles and providing disease-fighting substances. When saliva production is compromised, the risk of dental decay and tooth loss increases. Here are some strategies to mitigate these risks:
• Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and flossing regularly helps remove plaque and prevent decay. Consider using an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce bacterial load.
• Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help alleviate dry mouth symptoms. Sipping water frequently keeps the mouth moist and helps wash away food particles and bacteria.
• Choose Products that Increase Salivary Flow: Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva production. Opt for gum containing xylitol, a natural sweetener that can help prevent tooth decay. This is true for all xylitol-based products, including sugar free candy. Another salivary stimulator is a product called XyliMelt discs.
• Use Saliva Substitutes: Over-the-counter saliva substitutes and mouthwashes designed for dry mouth can provide temporary relief and help maintain moisture levels in the mouth.
• Avoid Tobacco and Alcohol: Both substances can dry out the mouth and increase the risk of decay and oral infections. Limiting or avoiding them can improve overall oral health.
• Regular Dental Check-ups: Frequent visits to the dentist for cleanings and examinations are essential. A dentist can identify early signs of
decay and suggest specific treatments or preventive measures tailored to individuals with dry mouth.
• Modify Medications: If medication-induced dry mouth is severe, consult with a health-care provider. They may adjust the dosage or switch to alternative medications with fewer side effects.
Addressing dry mouth proactively through these measures can significantly reduce the risk of dental decay and tooth loss, ensuring better oral health and quality of life, especially as one ages.

Bloom Boutique and Team Schulte partner to bring Cinderella moments to local teens
by PAIGE SCHULTE
In a heartwarming collaboration aimed at spreading joy and community spirit, the last two years, Bloom Boutique teamed up with Team Schulte & Co to support Ali’s Prom Project, a Tacoma-based charity dedicated to making prom dreams a reality for underprivileged teens. The partnership has sparked a unique initiative where the community can contribute to this cause while also receiving a special token of appreciation donated by Bloom and Team Schulte.
Ali’s Prom Project has long been known for its mission to empower teens from low-income, homeless or foster care backgrounds by providing them with new and gently used formal wear. This includes everything from dresses and accessories to shoes, thanks in part to Bloom Boutique and Team Schulte & Co of Neighborhood Experts Real Estate, that completes the Cinderella experience.
The last two years leading up to spring break for the community, community members are encouraged to participate in a shoe drive hosted at Bloom Boutique in Uptown Gig Harbor. The premise is simple yet impactful: For every pair of new or lightly used formal footwear donated by the community, donors will receive a complimentary pair of stylish spring sandals courtesy of Bloom and Team Schulte. This initiative not only encourages charitable giving but also rewards donors with a gesture of thanks that they can enjoy. “Shoes can be difficult to make fit. You can’t take them in or out to fit just perfectly, so the shoe drives fill a big need for these teens to complete their prom outfit experience,” explains Ali of Ali’s Prom Project.

Hosting the Perfect Thanksgiving
A guide to a memorable feast
Hosting the perfect Thanksgiving is all about planning, preparation, and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere for your guests. Start by setting a thoughtful guest list and sending out invitations early to ensure everyone can attend. Once you have a headcount, plan your menu, balancing traditional favorites like turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce with a few unique dishes to surprise and delight your guests. Consider dietary restrictions and preferences to accommodate all your guests comfortably.
Preparation is key to a smooth Thanksgiving day. Make a detailed shopping list and shop early to avoid last-minute stress. Prepare as many dishes as possible in advance — pies, casseroles and side dishes can often be made a day or two ahead. On the day of the feast, create a cooking schedule to ensure everything is ready at the same time.
Setting the scene is equally important. Decorate your home with seasonal touches such as autumn leaves, pumpkins and candles to create a cozy, festive atmosphere. Arrange your dining table thoughtfully, with plenty of space for each guest and a beautiful centerpiece to set the tone.
As your guests arrive, greet them with a warm welcome and perhaps a seasonal cocktail or mocktail. Encourage mingling with light appetizers before the main meal. During dinner, facilitate engaging conversations by sharing what you’re thankful for and inviting others to do the same.
Finally, don’t forget the importance of hospitality. Ensure everyone feels at home, attend to any needs promptly, and most importantly, enjoy the company and the celebration. With thoughtful planning and a warm spirit, your Thanksgiving gathering will be memorable for all the right reasons.

Back to School
The importance of a steady routine
As school resumes, establishing a consistent routine is crucial for children’s success and well-being. A structured schedule helps students manage their time effectively, reducing stress and enhancing their ability to balance academic responsibilities with extracurricular activities and relaxation. Regular sleep patterns ensure they are well-rested, improving concentration and performance in school. Consistent meal times provide the necessary energy for active learning and participation. Moreover, a steady routine fosters a sense of security and stability, essential for emotional and mental health, especially during the transition back to school. Parents can support this by setting specific times for homework, leisure and chores, and by maintaining open communication about their children’s daily experiences and challenges. Encouraging a regular routine not only boosts academic performance but also helps children develop essential life skills such as time management and self-discipline, setting a foundation for long-term success.

BOOST YOURImmunity
As the leaves change color and the air turns crisp, our bodies need a robust immune system to fend off the seasonal colds and flu. The transition from summer to fall brings a plethora of nutrient-rich foods that can enhance our immunity. Incorporating these fall superfoods into your diet can help you stay healthy and energized during the colder months.
Pumpkin
Pumpkin is a quintessential fall favorite and a powerhouse of nutrition. Rich in vitamins A and C, pumpkin boosts immune function by supporting the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting infections. Vitamin A, derived from the beta-carotene in pumpkins, plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of our skin, acting as the first line of defense against pathogens.
The high fiber content in pumpkin aids digestion, promoting a healthy gut environment that is essential for optimal immune function. The antioxidants present in pumpkin, such as alpha-carotene and betacarotene, protect your cells from free radicals and reduce inflammation. Enjoy pumpkin in soups, roasted as a side dish, or even in smoothies, for a delicious and immune-boosting treat. Pumpkin seeds are also beneficial as they contain zinc, another nutrient that supports immune health.
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are another fall staple that is packed with beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A. This nutrient is vital for maintaining healthy skin and mucous membranes, which act as barriers against infections. Sweet potatoes also contain vitamin C, manganese and antioxidants that further enhance your immune system. The fiber in sweet potatoes supports digestive health, ensuring a well-functioning gut, which is crucial for overall immune health.
The antioxidants in sweet potatoes, including anthocyanins in purple varieties, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and support immune health. Sweet potatoes are incredibly versatile and can be baked, mashed or used in stews to take full advantage of their health benefits. Their natural sweetness also makes them a comforting and nutritious addition to fall meals.
FALL SUPERFOODS TO KEEP YOU HEALTHY
by PATRICE ALLEN
Pomegranates
Pomegranates are in season during the fall and are renowned for their high levels of antioxidants, particularly vitamin C and polyphenols. These compounds help protect your immune cells from damage and support overall immune function. Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, stimulates the production of white blood cells and helps them function more effectively, thereby enhancing the body’s ability to fight infections.
Pomegranate juice or seeds can be added to salads, yogurt, drinks, or enjoyed on their own for a tangy, health-boosting snack. The antioxidants in pomegranates also reduce inflammation and support cardiovascular health by improving cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Pomegranates have been shown to have antiviral properties, making them an excellent addition to your diet during cold and flu season. Enjoy the sweet-tart flavor and the numerous health benefits of this vibrant fruit.
Garlic
Garlic is a natural immune booster known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. It contains allicin, a compound that enhances the response of white blood cells to fight off infections. Incorporating garlic into your meals can help protect against colds and flu. Allicin is released when garlic is crushed or chopped, so let it sit for a few minutes before cooking to maximize its health benefits.
Garlic also supports cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels, further contributing to overall well-being. Use garlic in soups, stews or roasted vegetables to add flavor and health benefits. The pungent aroma and taste of garlic not only enhance your meals but also provide significant health advantages.
Incorporating these fall superfoods into your diet can significantly boost your immune system and keep you healthy during the colder months. Embrace the season by enjoying the rich flavors and nutritional benefits these foods have to offer. Stay well, and enjoy the beauty and bounty of fall!

Embrace Fall
Energize your health with outdoor activities
As fall arrives, embrace the cooler weather by staying active outdoors. Take advantage of the stunning foliage with activities like hiking, biking, or walking in local parks. Not only does this boost physical fitness, but being outside can also improve mood and reduce stress. Fall offers unique opportunities for fun activities like apple picking or visiting pumpkin patches, making exercise enjoyable. Additionally, the crisp air can enhance your energy levels. Aim for at least 30 minutes of outdoor activity several times a week to reap the mental and physical benefits of this vibrant season.
Boost Your Well-Being
To stay healthy during the fall months, focus on boosting your immune system and maintaining overall wellness. Incorporate seasonal fruits and vegetables, rich in vitamins and antioxidants, into your diet. Foods like pumpkins, apples and leafy greens are excellent choices. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and herbal teas. Prioritize regular exercise, taking advantage of the crisp weather for outdoor activities like hiking or brisk walking. Get sufficient sleep to support your immune function, aiming for 7 to 9 hours per night. Wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs, and consider getting a flu shot for added protection. Finally, manage stress through mindfulness practices, such as meditation or yoga, to keep both your mind and body in peak condition.

Discover Dale Chihuly’s glass art in his hometown, Tacoma,
Washington
“Iwanted the bridge to have the same type of impact on the viewer, whether it was near or far, light or dark. That is one of the real successes of the bridge, that constant sense of ‘wow.’” - Dale Chihuly, Glass Artist
Any exploration of Dale Chihuly’s glass art in his hometown of Tacoma should start at the Chihuly Bridge of Glass. This stunning Tacoma landmark consists of three installations. Make sure to look up when crossing through the Seaform Pavilion to observe the colorful ceiling, which showcases 2,364 pieces of glass from Chihuly’s Seaform and Persian series. The next section of the bridge has the Crystal Towers with large chunks of polyvitro, a resin which resembles the glacial ice of Mount Rainier. The third element is the Venetian Wall, and it is stunning. It is 80-feet long and showcases 109 sculptures from Chihuly’s Venetian, Ikebana and Putti series.
The Chihuly Bridge of Glass is not just a Tacoma landmark; it also serves as a pedestrian walkway which connects the Museum of Glass with an easy walk to the Tacoma Art Museum and Union Station, which have exhibits of Chihuly’s work.

Two must-see museums to view Chihuly’s work in Tacoma are the Museum of Glass and Tacoma Art Museum. Both have a large collection of his work. La Finestra is a cute Mediterranean café located in the Museum of Glass. Ingredients are locally sourced, and the wine list highlights small, family vineyards. They are known for their crisp, flaky and buttery croissants. In addition to the Chihuly Bridge of Glass, free public displays of his art can be seen at Union Station, which is now a Federal building. Have an ID ready to show the security guard before entering. Go upstairs to the second floor to see four large pieces and a chandelier which hangs in the rotunda.
For those who want to try glassblowing, book an appointment at Area 253 Glassblowing or the Tacoma Glassblowing Studio. Both pack and ship glass art for visitors. A popular fall activity is Glass Art Pumpkin Patches. Visit the Tacoma Glassblowing Studio’s website for locations.
