Celebrating the Holidays with

T

Gratitude for Our Community

he holiday season is a time of reflection, joy and togetherness. It's a time when we gather with friends and family to celebrate traditions, exchange gifts and create cherished memories. However, it's also a time to express our gratitude for the wonderful communities that surround us.

Our communities play a crucial role in shaping our lives and experiences. They provide us with support, friendship, and a sense of belonging that is invaluable, especially during the holidays. Being grateful for our community is an important aspect of celebrating the season.

December 10 at 3pm Becker Auditorium

One of the most beautiful aspects of this time of year is the way communities come together to support one another. Whether it's through charitable acts, volunteering, or simply being there for each other, the holiday spirit tends to bring out the best in people. We see food drives, toy collections, and charity events that exemplify the compassion and generosity of our communities.

Celebrating 50 years!

In our November/December edition of Bonners Ferry Living Local, you will find

Bonners Ferry Comm. Orchestra Jubilee Concert

holiday-inspired articles to help prepare you for the season; celebrate GROW!'s successful season nourishing our local community; and get into the Christmas season with Night of Nativities and three chances to shop Bonners Ferry Farmers Market's Holiday Market; and so much more! Be sure to check out our holiday shopping pages, featuring some great local businesses to visit for all your holiday shopping needs. In a world that can sometimes feel increasingly disconnected, the holidays offer us a chance to reconnect with our roots, our communities, and each other. Let us take a moment this holiday season to be grateful for the incredible network of people who surround us, and to celebrate with an open heart the unity, diversity, and love that our communities bring into our lives. After all, it is this sense of togetherness that makes the holidays truly magical.

he holiday season is a time of enchantment and camaraderie; a chance to gather with loved ones and revel in the magic of the festivities. Yet, amidst the flurry of extravagant celebrations and opulent feasts, there exists a distinct allure in embracing the art of simplicity. This is where the concept of hosting a small dinner party during the holiday season comes to the forefront—a delightful way to foster genuine connections and create lasting memories. In an age of extravagance, the charm of simplicity shines ever brighter. As the holiday season approaches, the allure of uncomplicated gatherings holds a special place in our hearts. Rather than being consumed by elaborate decorations and menus, we can find fulfillment in cultivating an ambiance of warmth and authenticity. The foundation of a successful small dinner party lies in the choice of guests. By keeping the guest list intimate, consisting of cherished friends and close family members, the stage is set for meaningful conversations and an atmosphere of genuine relaxation. Personalized invitations, whether handwritten notes or carefully crafted digital messages, communicate a sense of significance that resonates with each individual. When it comes to decorating for such an intimate affair, less truly is more. Simplicity extends to the table itself—a tastefully arranged setting with minimal embellishments, a scattering of candles casting a warm glow, and perhaps a touch of verdant foliage to infuse a hint of nature’s elegance. The aim is not to overwhelm the senses but to create an environment where heartfelt interactions take center stage. Culinary artistry can find its zenith in the simplicity of a thoughtfully curated menu. While the allure of an elaborate banquet looms large, a well-prepared selection of dishes can leave a more indelible mark. A seasonal menu, carefully crafted from the freshest ingredients, can evoke the essence of the holidays. A succulent roast as the centerpiece, flanked by a selection of thoughtfully chosen sides and crowned with a delectable dessert, can become a symphony of flavors that resonates in the memory.

LESS truly is MORE. 14

from ordinary to extraordinary. A PERSONAL TOUCH CAN ELEVATE THE EVENING

A personal touch can elevate the evening from ordinary to extraordinary. Place cards handwritten with care, sharing anecdotes about the dishes served, or even presenting guests with a small token of appreciation to take home. Weaving these gestures into the fabric of the gathering adds depth to the experience. It’s the attention to detail and the infusion of your personality that make the occasion truly unforgettable. Introducing interactive elements into the evening can transform it into a tapestry of shared joy. Engaging games, collaborative DIY projects or even a storytelling session can weave bonds that extend beyond the event itself. These activities unlock a realm of shared experiences, fostering connections that linger long after the evening draws to a close. Hosting a small dinner party during the holiday season is a finely orchestrated art. It begins with meticulous planning, 16

BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

outlining the guest list and dispatching invitations in advance. This groundwork enables you to focus on the nuances that elevate the evening from ordinary to exceptional, ensuring every aspect is infused with thoughtfulness and intention. Central to the art of hosting is the menu. Instead of inundating yourself with an exhaustive spread, curate a selection of dishes that harmonize with one another and encapsulate the essence of the season. Accommodating dietary preferences and restrictions ensures everyone feels catered to and cherished. Timing is a silent conductor in this symphony of flavors and interactions. A well-structured timeline, guiding the presentation of each dish and the progression of the evening, maintains a harmonious flow. This foresight prevents lastminute rushes, allowing you to bask in the company of your guests and partake in the magic you’ve conjured.

Conversations are the threads that weave the evening into a vibrant tapestry. Carefully configuring the seating arrangement can spark dynamic exchanges, transcending small talk and delving into realms of shared interests and revelations. Mixing personalities ensures a kaleidoscope of discussions, enlivening the atmosphere. As the host, your demeanor paints the backdrop against which the gathering unfolds. Welcoming guests with warmth, facilitating introductions, and cultivating an environment of comfort and inclusion sets the tone. A gracious host makes every guest feel like an integral part of the celebration. While planning is imperative, embracing spontaneity injects an element of enchantment. Allowing the evening to evolve organically and adapting to unforeseen turns can lead to delightful surprises. The joy lies in observing connections deepen, witnessing laughter and camaraderie flourish in unexpected directions. As the holiday season beckons, consider the enchantment of simplicity in your celebrations. The art of a small dinner party beckons—a canvas upon which cherished memories are painted, connections forged, and the essence of togetherness celebrated. By thoughtfully curating your guest list, tending to décor and culinary delights, and imbuing each element with your personal touch, you master the art of hosting a small dinner party that resonates long after the festivities fade. Amid a world enamored with opulence, the elegance of simplicity shines bright in these moments of shared joy and authentic communion.

Math, Bonners Ferry High School

A

fter spending four years working at Turning Winds Residential Treatment Center, a boarding school for troubled teens in Troy, Montana, Russell Thorman saw an opening for a math teacher position at Bonners Ferry High School (BFHS) and decided to apply. "I was like 'Well, I am already trying to get kids to do what they don't want to do anyway,'" Russell joked. "Why not get them to do math when they don't want to do math." Despite not having studied math since high school, Russell got the job, and he is now in his eighth year teaching at BFHS.

RUSSELL THORMAN

Over the past seven years, Russell has built relationships with students inside and outside of the classroom, developed multiple apps that his students use every day and grown in his appreciation for the "wholesome" BFHS community. Born in California, Russell moved to the Spokane area at the age of 2 and spent most of his childhood years there while his father, Marvin, taught math at Upper Columbia Academy. Later, the Thorman family moved across the country when Russell was a teenager, settling in Tennessee. Russell graduated from high school in Tennessee, met his wife, Birgitta, and studied

BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

outdoor leadership with an emphasis in counseling at Southern Adventist University before moving back to the Pacific Northwest, where both he and Birgitta grew up. While studying under his dad in high school, Russell came to appreciate his father's teaching style, and he leaned heavily on his guidance after he became a math teacher himself at BFHS. "My first year teaching here, I was in deep waters," Russell recalled. "It had been like seven years since I had taken calculus—and now I [was] teaching it. So, I was on the phone with my dad every other day chatting about stuff — teaching techniques, materials, [etc.].” Over time, Russell has grown in his confidence and developed "a gift to make math achievable," Superintendent Jan Bayer noted. Russell has also aimed to develop mutual respect with his students, taking time to build relationships, whether he is teaching them math equations or playing Spikeball and disc golf during his lunch break or after school. "Obviously it's great if I can teach kids math, but if I can teach a kid how to be a great member of society, that's what I'm going for," Russell explained. "And math is a great side effect," he quipped.

Student-Athlete in the spotlight

by CHRISTIAN WEANER

E ELI NEWELL, SENIOR

li Newell has always been a well-rounded athlete. Throughout his childhood and adolescent years, he has played basketball, football and golf, and he plans to run track this spring, but his skills have never shined brighter than on the soccer pitch this fall. Overcoming an early season struggle with patellar tendinitis in his knee that caused Eli to miss the first few weeks of the season, the senior striker recently led Bonners Ferry to one of its best seasons in school history. Eli played soccer for the first time at the age of 11 on a rec team but did not play again until his freshman year of high school. He went to football for his sophomore year before returning to soccer last fall, when he scored 16 goals in 21 matches. "The best thing about soccer is that it is still a pretty new sport for me, and there is still a lot for me to get better at," Eli noted. Despite missing the first two matches of the year, Eli had 26 goals during the regular season this fall, and on October 11, he scored the game-winning goal in Bonners Ferry's 1-0 District I Championship victory. "As a striker, he is relentless, good for not only a few rapid

22

BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

offensive runs but for a sustained effort of pushing the opponent's defense and finding ways to get to the goal and follow up with the score," Badgers Head Coach Paul Bonnell explained. In addition to his on-field prowess, Eli has grown as a leader amongst his teammates and sets an example for others to follow. "He is a respectful and coachable athlete, always willing to work hard in practice," Paul added. "He leads quietly and by example and encourages his teammates to pull their weight (play up to their ability and with confidence) and play their best." Eli credits the hard work that he and his teammates put in during the offseason as the catalyst for the Badgers' success this season, and he also acknowledges the support of his coaches and family not only this season but throughout his high school career. "During my time in sports at BFHS, I think I have developed a better work ethic," Eli said. "I think that my brothers and dad have influenced my growth the most because of their experience in athletics." Outside of school and sports, Eli loves outdoor activities like skating, swimming, snowboarding, biking, flips and digging. He plans to attend college and travel after graduating in the spring.

GROW!, which stands for Gardeners for Organic Wellbeing, is a testament to the power of community-driven sustainability. The heart and soul of GROW!'s mission is to bolster the local food system while promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Their work extends far beyond growing vegetables; it's about cultivating a sense of well-being and fostering a vibrant, engaged community. To get a glimpse of their impact, look no further than their impressive track record during the spring and summer months. With a relentless dedication to their cause, GROW! planted a remarkable 40-tree orchard, featuring an array of fruit trees that might surprise you in the North Idaho climate: peaches, nectarines, figs, goji berries and blueberries. This orchard, a year and a half in the making, now stands as a thriving testament to their commitment. While the garden itself thrived, GROW! president Michelle Muir and her team offered

invaluable education to the community. Arthur Church, one of the board members and a walking encyclopedia of gardening wisdom, hosted numerous classes in the garden. From soil enrichment techniques to rehabilitating old orchards, these classes empowered residents with the knowledge to cultivate their gardens successfully. Summer marked the time for GROW!'s hard work to come to fruition, quite literally. With abundant harvests of tomatoes, beans, peas, corn and peppers, the team had more than enough to share with those in need. Local food banks, the Restorium and the Senior Center received their bounty, filling the plates and hearts of countless residents. As the season rolled into fall, late crops like zucchinis, corn and squash ripened, joining the ranks of their previously mentioned successes. This season alone, GROW! has managed to donate over 1,000 pounds of fresh, locally grown produce to neighbors in need. Now, what's the secret behind GROW!'s flourishing garden? The answer lies in the dedication of its volunteers. Over the past season, GROW! witnessed a significant increase in volunteer engagement. They introduced garden and orchard workdays on the first Saturday of each month, complemented by short classes that not only attracted november/december 2023 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL

grow together. green thumbs but also bolstered the volunteer base. After all, as the saying goes, "Many hands make light work." While the volunteer roster diversified over the season, the core group remained solid, composed mainly of board members and a neighbor who generously donated both time and equipment to keep the garden thriving. And they're not alone; local businesses like Boundary Tractor and Sugar Plum Floral have lent a helping hand to support GROW!'s initiatives. Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for GROW! It's a fundamental principle that guides their every action. Gardening, at its essence, is one of the most sustainable practices, but GROW! takes it a step further. They've implemented a drip-line watering system in the orchard, several raised beds and two hoop houses. By targeting water usage precisely where plants need it, they significantly reduce waste. This system is set to expand across most of the garden next year. Furthermore, GROW! practices soil stewardship by planting cover crops. After harvesting a section of the garden, they sow cover crops, which, once mature, are tilled back into the soil, enriching it with essential nutrients. The result? Lush, fertile soil ready for another season of planting. While the numbers tell a compelling story, sometimes it's the little moments that resonate most deeply. During a visit from a local Scout troop, Michelle offered the kids a chance to taste fresh vegetables plucked straight from the garden. For many of them, it was a revelatory experience. The expressions of wonder and delight on their faces as they savored the flavors of the gardenfresh produce were priceless. These small moments reaffirm the profound impact of GROW!'s work in the community. As winter approaches, GROW! doesn't plan to hibernate. They have an exciting lineup of events, including the second annual Pumpkin Carving Party for neighborhood kids, where leftover pumpkins will be donated to local food banks for jack-o'-lanterns. From November to March, GROW! will host a series of potluck-and-learn classes, providing an opportunity to connect, learn and grow together. The community can become part of this thriving movement by attending these classes or following GROW! on Facebook (search GrowBoundaryCounty) and subscribing to their newsletter through the website (GrowBoundaryCounty.org). Donations are also always appreciated and go a long way in supporting GROW!'s mission. The organization’s impact is far-reaching, but their ambitions extend even further. With plans to secure grants and donations, they aim to update their water system, expand the garden to better serve the community, and implement drip-line watering throughout the garden. They also envision building a kiosk-type sign at the garden's entrance to highlight sponsors, share garden maps, and educate visitors about GROW!'s mission. As GROW! continues to nourish the community and promote sustainable practices, one thing is clear: The future looks greener, tastier and more vibrant for Boundary County. In the words of Dan and Michelle Muir, “GROW! is sowing the seeds of change, one garden bed at a time.” So, whether you're a seasoned gardener or a curious newbie, there's a place for you in this thriving community of earth stewards. Come, be a part of GROW!, and watch the harvest of sustainability and community flourish 27 november/december 2023 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL before your eyes.

A NIGHT OF

Nativities

A Christmastime community centered on Jesus Christ

W

hen Melissa Bateman was asked to head up the committee in charge of running the annual Night of Nativities event, a memory came to her mind.

"When my boys were little, on our way to church, we would pass a church in town that had a parking lot full of vehicles," Melissa recalled. "One Sunday, I noticed that my son looked concerned that so many people were attending 'another church.' I took the opportunity to remind him how blessed we are to live in a community full of people who believe just like us that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the World." For Melissa, Night of Nativities is about bringing people together, regardless of their religious affiliation, to remember and appreciate the true meaning of the Christmas season.

Night of Nativities first started in 2014 when Lisa Carle decided to bring a Christmastime tradition from her hometown to Bonners Ferry. From the outset, Lisa sought to make the event nondenominational, reaching out to the local ministerial association and recruiting volunteers from around the community. The LDS church offered to host the event, as they had space big enough for Lisa’s vision. The purpose of Night of Nativities, Melissa explained, is to unify people in Bonners Ferry, "spreading the message of love, hope, and the birth of Christ during the holiday season." "Night of Nativities serves as an opportunity for the entire community to come together and reflect on the spiritual significance of Christmas," Melissa noted. "The event often features a display of various Nativity

scenes from different cultures and artistic interpretations. It also includes music and activities for all ages, fostering a sense of unity, joy and goodwill among attendees." Ultimately, Melissa's hope is that attendees will leave encouraged not only by the holiday festivities but more importantly by the overwhelming sense of community that stems from a renewed focus on the spiritual significance of Christmas. "Through the enchanting Nativity displays, live performances and warm interactions with fellow attendees, we hope to foster a sense of togetherness and the understanding that Christmas is a time for coming together, sharing love and remembering the humble origins of this special occasion," Melissa emphasized. "In an increasingly divided world, we are setting aside a weekend dedicated to celebrating our common bonds rather than our differences. Night of Nativities offers a meaningful opportunity to achieve just that,” Melissa concluded. Night of Nativities will be held on Friday and Saturday, December 1 and 2, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. DODGE PEAK LODGE A memorable experience awaits by JILLIAN CHANDLER

D

irk and Kim Van Der Kolk have called North Idaho home for more than two decades, during which time they were the proud owners of two restaurants in the Coeur d’Alene/Hayden area, as well as a certified home for the elderly. When Kim’s mother became ill five years ago, the couple decided to sell everything and move to Florida to care for her. Unfortunately, Kim’s mother passed away soon after. After a bit of persuading, her father, known to many as Grandpa Joe, agreed to move back with Kim and her husband to the beautiful Northwest—Bonners Ferry to be exact. Following their move back to the Idaho panhandle, a new endeavor would soon follow. In December of 2019, Dirk and Kim opened Tavern at the Lodge at Dodge Peak Lodge to eager diners seeking new flavors, and in February of 2020, their purchase of the whole Dodge Peak Lodge property was finalized. Their dream of being back in Idaho and once again owning their own business has been realized, and with much anticipation and excitement for the Van Der Kolks as well as the Bonners Ferry community as a whole. Dodge Peak Lodge is a finely crafted log structure which features comfortable accommodations, each room adorned with locally handcrafted log furniture. Named after Dodge Peak in Boundary County, the lodge is located in the Kootenai River Valley and offers rooms accommodating families and groups of up to five people, individuals and couples. They offer special weekly rates for those looking to enjoy an extended stay—including meal plans. They offer packages for weddings, family reunions, parties, hunters and snowmobilers, even wine tastings, including up to 14 hotel rooms and even an event space. And RV Parking is available on-site. In addition to the wonderful accommodations, you’ll find The Tavern at the Lodge, where Dirk brings decades of restaurant and cooking experience—Dirk cooked at a variety of restaurants all over Europe!—to the table. “Really, his passion is what prompted us to open this restaurant,” says Kim, “and hospitality has always run in my blood. This is a perfect combo for us!” Guests will find a delicious array of starters, soups and salads, and delightful entrees. From stuffed mushrooms and escargot to Spanish shrimp, your taste buds are sure to dance! And don’t forget about their house-made, from scratch, French Onion and Lobster Bisque soups. Entrees feature everything from Chicken Marsala and Veal Parmesan to Rib Eye Steak and Tuscany Shrimp Pasta. And you can’t forget their selection of Schnitzel, served with knodel and vegetables. Then there are the specials, like the Paella Spanish and Bouillabaisse. Their goal at Tavern at the Lodge is to make their customers happy and have them “leaving with a memorable experience.” “I think we are unique first and foremost because of our outstanding chef, my husband, Dirk,” affirms Kim. “In addition, our menu is quite diverse with many European favorites.” Dirk and Kim are truly grateful for all of the encouragement and positivity they have received from the community in this endeavor over the last three years. “Just all the support we have been shown and the willingness to help in any way to have us succeed,” smiles Kim. “We are big on family, and friends who have become like family, and have always had their support. The community of Bonners Ferry continues to welcome us with open arms.” The Van Der Kolks feel blessed to have been given the incredible opportunity to be a part of the Bonners Ferry community which has so graciously accepted them since relocating to the area, and shown unwavering support to Dodge Peak. They invite you to dine with them for dinner Thursday through Saturday, with service provided 5 to 8pm, book a stay—or both. Reservations for dinner are recommended, though not required. To reserve your room, you can do so online.

Shopping Local for the Holidays Why choosing local businesses can make a big difference this festive season

34

BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

A

s the holiday season approaches, the excitement of gift-giving and festive gatherings fills the air. While many of us indulge in the convenience of online shopping and big-box retailers, it's crucial not to overlook the significant impact that shopping local can have on your community. Choosing to support local businesses during the holidays can make a world of difference. When you shop at local businesses, you're not just buying a product; you're investing in your community. Local stores, restaurants and artisans are often the heart and soul of your neighborhood. Your purchases contribute to their growth and success, which, in turn, bolsters the local economy. It leads to more job opportunities, improved infrastructure, and a vibrant community that everyone can enjoy. Local businesses offer a diverse range of unique and handcrafted products that you won't find in larger commercial stores. Choosing gifts from these businesses adds a personal touch to your presents. Whether it's a piece of handmade jewelry, a custom artwork or locally sourced delicacies, you're bound to find items that are both thoughtful and meaningful, making your holiday gifting even more special. Shopping local can also be a more environmentally responsible choice. With smaller distances to travel, local products often have a smaller carbon footprint compared to items transported over long

distances. Supporting local businesses can help reduce emissions and promote sustainability, which is increasingly important in a world facing climate challenges. Many local businesses are the embodiment of the American dream. They are often run by passionate entrepreneurs who take great pride in their work. By shopping local, you're not only supporting their endeavors, but you're also encouraging others to follow their dreams and start their own businesses. This perpetuates a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in your community. Local businesses tend to prioritize customer service because they value the relationships they build with their neighbors. You're more likely to receive a personal and friendly experience when you shop locally. The staff often knows their products well and can provide expert advice, ensuring you make the right choices for your holiday purchases. Shopping local can create a sense of belonging within your community. As you frequent local stores and become a familiar face, you establish a connection with the business owners and fellow shoppers. It builds a sense of camaraderie and unity that makes your neighborhood feel like a true home. This year, consider making a commitment to shop local, and let the spirit of the season shine brightly in your own neighborhood.

Give yourself, or that special someone, the gift of Lore Coffee

GIFT THE JOY

OF SPECIALTY COFFEE

by JILLIAN CHANDLER

6378 Main Street, Suite A, Bonners Ferry, ID LoreRoasters.com

onners Ferry is home to Lore Coffee Roasters, where owners Graysen Spiller and Nicholas Carter specialize in roasting specialty coffee—the synthesis of a scientific and craftsman approach. Sourcing the highest quality coffee available, they roast it in such a way that clearly reveals the naturally occurring characteristics found in each coffee. “We love coffee and want to share that love and experience with the people of this great community,” Nicholas shares. Coffee is roasted in their new, modified 2023 Diedrich IR-12, 12kg machine, which they use to roast between 13 to 18 pounds at a time; each batch takes between 10 and 12 minutes to complete. “Designed specifically for roasting small-batch specialty coffee, the machine allows us to control and track every variable while roasting a batch of coffee,” states Nicholas. “Those variables are the gas setting, airflow and real-time tracking of the temperature of the coffee inside the drum. Ultimately, all of this allows for us to roast each coffee in a uniquely designed profile best suited for its qualities.” Nicholas and Graysen are excited to share that they are allocating their time this winter to production with their wholesaling operation(s), which means current (and future) customers are going to get access to more coffee, more frequently, and the national retail roasting and distribution will increase. “Future wholesaling customers are going to have access to coffees that they may have never been able to consider until they are able to partner with us,” Graysen says. “We are currently looking for select partnerships; slots are filling up.” Whether you prefer consistency or variety, Lore Coffee Roasters has something for you through their coffee subscriptions. “Within our subscription plan, a customer who prefers consistency will have the option to choose between our 3 Mile House Blend, North Hill Espresso Blend and our natural decaf coffee from Colombia. Someone who prefers variety will get a selection of our rotating single-origin coffee offerings. This option is meant for people who really want to experience what coffee can be,” notes Nicholas. Customers also have the option to choose how much coffee they want and how often they would like it; every one, two or four weeks. For those looking to become educated in coffee, Lore’s cupping classes are something to look forward to on weekends. One can expect to be taken along a journey around the current seasonal coffees that are available in-house and any experimental and unique coffee samples that have come into the lab. There is a small fee to attend these two-hour classes, and everyone will walk away with a bag of coffee of their choice. “Education entails training for individuals or groups who want to make coffee at home with their own machines or for staff in any restaurant setting, whether it be a coffee shop, restaurant, resort, or coffee hut,” notes Graysen. During the holiday season, be sure to look for Lore Coffee at local retailers to include Boundary Shipping in Bonners Ferry, Homestead Produce in Three Mile and Winter Ridge Natural Foods in Sandpoint. Custom coffee is roasted and supplied (private label) to The Gathering Place and Sharon’s Country Store. For those looking to give the gift of Lore Coffee this holiday season, you can order through the website and have it sent directly to your family and friends. Nick and Graysen are excited to share that they have found and are settling into their new location! You can now find them at 6378 Main Street, Suite A, in Bonners Ferry. They will be opening to the public in early November. ‘Tis the season to share the gift of Lore Coffee.

n the pursuit of a healthier life, we often focus on the physical aspects—regular exercise, balanced diets and sufficient sleep. However, a growing body of research has revealed that happiness, that elusive and subjective emotion, plays a pivotal role in our overall wellbeing. Beyond its emotional benefits, happiness has been scientifically linked to improved cardiovascular health, healthier eating patterns and exercise habits, a stronger immune system, and more. This intriguing connection underscores the importance of nurturing our emotional state alongside our physical efforts.

and cardiovascular health. When we experience happiness, our bodies release hormones like endorphins and oxytocin, which promote relaxation and lower stress levels. Reduced stress directly translates to a healthier heart by lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease. A study conducted by the American Heart Association found that individuals with positive emotional well-being were less likely to develop coronary heart disease. This highlights the tangible impact of happiness on our cardiovascular system and emphasizes the need to prioritize our emotional health.

On the flip side, negative emotions often lead to comfort eating, where unhealthy, high-calorie foods are consumed as a coping mechanism. By fostering happiness, we can consciously influence our food choices, contributing to long-term health. Moreover, the connection between happiness and exercise is a reinforcing cycle. Engaging in physical activities releases endorphins, often referred to as “feel-good” hormones. These endorphins induce a sense of happiness and euphoria, promoting regular exercise. Simultaneously, when we’re happy, we’re more inclined to engage in physical activities that we enjoy, leading to increased motivation and adherence to workout routines. This synergy between happiness and exercise underscores the importance of integrating joyful movement into our lives. In the era of health concerns, bolstering our immune system has never been more crucial. Emerging research reveals that happiness has a direct impact on the immune system’s efficacy. The stress hormone cortisol, which can weaken the immune response, is regulated by positive emotions. When we’re happy, cortisol levels decrease, allowing our immune system to function optimally. Furthermore, studies have shown that happier individuals tend to recover faster from illnesses and have a reduced susceptibility to infections. This connection serves as a compelling reason to prioritize activities that bring us joy and cultivate an emotionally positive environment. Delving deeper into the physiological realm, happiness has been linked to cellular health and longevity. Telomeres, the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes, play a crucial role in cellular aging. Shortened telomeres are associated with age-related diseases and a decreased lifespan. Remarkably, a study conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, found that individuals reporting higher levels of happiness had longer telomeres. This suggests that happiness may contribute to slowing down the cellular aging process, leading to a longer and healthier life. Stress is an omnipresent adversary in today’s fast-paced world, taking a toll on both our mental and physical health. Enter happiness as a potent stress buffer. When we’re happy, our bodies

release chemicals that counteract the effects of stress hormones. This not only helps us manage stress more effectively but also translates to a healthier body. Chronic stress is linked to a plethora of health issues, including cardiovascular diseases, compromised immune function and mental health disorders. By cultivating happiness, we equip ourselves with a powerful tool to mitigate the harmful effects of stress. The interplay between happiness and physical health is undeniably intricate. As we strive for a healthier life, we must recognize the symbiotic relationship between emotional and physical well-being. Nurturing happiness involves a multifaceted approach that includes practicing gratitude, nurturing social connections, engaging in regular exercise and pursuing activities that spark joy. By integrating these practices into our lives, we set the stage for a harmonious coexistence of happiness and health.

happiness

It is plain to see that the scientific evidence is resounding: Happiness is far more than a fleeting emotion. It’s a powerful force that directly influences our physical well-being. From enhancing cardiovascular health and encouraging healthier eating patterns to boosting the immune system and promoting cellular health, happiness is an essential ingredient for a healthier life. As we navigate the complexities of modern existence, let us remember that fostering happiness is not only a pursuit of emotional fulfillment but also a proactive investment in our long-term health.

Early Detection Your most effective weapon against breast cancer

B

reast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, as of the end of 2020, 7.8 million women diagnosed within the past five years are still alive. Despite the sobering statistics, early detection dramatically improves prognosis. Advanced imaging technologies, like 3D mammography (also known as digital breast tomosynthesis), have revolutionized early detection. Earlier detection correlates with a better prognosis, giving you more reason than ever not to skip your annual mammogram. In our own Boundary County, more than 3,000 women are within the recommended mammogram screening age of 40 to 75. Unfortunately, many skip screenings due to misunderstandings, such as the belief that family history is the only risk factor. However, less than 15 percent of breast cancer cases are linked to family history. Symptoms of breast cancer can vary from a painless lump in the breast to changes in breast appearance or skin. Notably, early stage cancers often show no symptoms, making screenings crucial. Women between the ages of 40 and 49 account for one in six breast cancer cases, underscoring the need to start screening at age 40. Then, add the pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Mix until everything is fully incorporated and the batter is smooth. • Pour the filling over the crust in the springform pan. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release any air bubbles. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 50 to 60 minutes, or until the edges are set but the center is slightly jiggly. • While the cheesecake is baking, prepare the topping by mixing together the sour cream, sugar and vanilla extract in a small bowl. • Once the cheesecake is done baking, remove it from the oven and carefully spread the sour cream topping evenly over the surface. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes to set the topping. • Remove the cheesecake from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate the cheesecake for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld and the cheesecake to fully set. • Before serving, carefully remove the sides of the springform pan. or all of those who enjoy shopping at the Bonners Ferry Farmers Market during the summer months, their annual Holiday Market is one you won’t want to miss!

You will have three opportunities to shop: 9am to 3pm November 17 and 18, and again December 16. Held at the Boundary County Fair’s Exhibit Hall, find all of your favorite market vendors, plus some new ones that you’ll only find participating at the Holiday Market. The November markets, held the weekend prior to Thanksgiving, will offer everything from autumn décor for your home to dinner rolls for your Thanksgiving table. Held in conjunction with the Mennonite Bake Sale, the Vintage Sale in the Memorial Hall, and the Catholic Church Holiday Market, be sure to make time to stop by all of the wonderful markets in town that weekend. “We’re hoping the December 16 market lets you get your lastminute gifts that you may have forgotten and helps you avoid a winter trip out of town,” shares Cassidy Cossairt of the Bonners Ferry Farmers Market.

DECEMBER

Each day, there will be more than 30 booths offering handmade art, crafts, jewelry, baked goods and fresh produce. And as they only allow vendors who make their products, everything is unique. “Our people are so creative and make such awesome items that you wouldn’t find elsewhere,” Cassidy notes. The Bonners Ferry Farmers Market team would like to thank the community for all of their support over the years. For vendors, these markets grant them the opportunity to see people they wouldn’t often see otherwise, catching up with them and showcasing what they make with others. “It’s just a wonderful sense of community at our markets,” Cassidy smiles. Mark your calendars for November 17 and 18, and December 16, and attend the Holiday Markets, where you can support and shop local. “Local money stays local, and Boundary County is too cool not to support,” Cassidy adds. “We love where we live and the people who make it home.” Those interested in helping organize the 2023 Holiday Market can join the committee by sending an email to board@bonnersferryfarmersmarket.org.

FAIRBANKS Aurora Season in Alaska is a magical time when tourism slows down and serenity reigns in the backcountry. There is no better way to experience this than on the Aurora Winter Train, which travels between Anchorage and Fairbanks. For the ultimate experience, fly into Anchorage and spend a day or two. Board the Aurora Winter Train on a full day trip to Fairbanks. Along the way, enjoy the winter wonderland of Alaska’s backcountry. Guests will enjoy the comfort of a warm train car with comfy seats and picture windows to view the incredible scenery. Keep an eye out for wildlife, which are easier to spot against the pristine white snow. Riding the rails along the Susitna River is even more spectacular on a clear day when it is possible to see Mount Denali. Arrive in Fairbanks and spend a few days to experience the Aurora Borealis. Alaska Airlines offers flights from Fairbanks and Anchorage to Seattle with easy connections to other cities. Pro Tip: If you don’t want to invest in heavy winter gear for outdoor activities, many outfitters in both cities offer clothing and boot rentals.

STAY

The Marriott Anchorage Downtown is a perfect base hotel for your time visiting Alaska’s capital city. The location is so convenient, and guests can walk to the Alaska Railroad Depot or the bus station. It is also easy to walk to shops and restaurants. Enjoy city and mountain views from the hotel. The hotel underwent a complete renovation with vibrant colors that really brighten things up during winter’s extremely short daylight hours. This full-service hotel has a lovely indoor pool and fitness center. If you want to see the Aurora Borealis, then the Chena Hot Springs Resort is the place to stay. It is a scenic 60-mile drive from downtown Fairbanks to the very end of the Chena Hot Springs Road. Lodging ranges from dry cabins (no running water and outdoor restrooms) to nice hotel rooms. On-site is a pool house with access to the outdoor hot springs and an Ice Museum constructed of ice. Pro Tip: Book a shuttle through the Chena Hot Springs Resort, and it will pick you up from the train station. MARRIOTT ANCHORAGE DOWNTOWN Marriott.com CHENA HOT SPRINGS RESORT ChenaHotSprings.com

On a clear day you may even see Mount Denali. Interpretive signs along the trail highlight the natural and human history of the area. There is so much to do at the Chena Hot Springs Resort during the winter. A must do is the Aurora Viewing Tour. It is a 30-minute drive from the resort to Charlie Dome.
