fall into home Improvement

Transform your space with autumn-inspired projects

With autumn’s arrival, it’s the perfect time to embark on home improvement projects that capture the essence of the season. From creating a cozy fireplace area to revamping your kitchen and enhancing your outdoor retreat, these projects will transform your living space into a haven that embraces the beauty and warmth of autumn. Whether you’re seeking to enhance aesthetics, improve energy efficiency or create inviting outdoor areas, these ideas will infuse your home with the spirit of the season. Get ready to fall in love with home improvement projects that bring the magic of autumn into your living space!

Revitalize Your Kitchen

Give your kitchen a fresh look and feel by embarking on a fall-inspired kitchen makeover. Start by updating the cabinets with a new coat of paint or staining them in rich, warm hues. Consider replacing outdated hardware with modern fixtures to add a touch of elegance. Upgrade your countertops with durable and stylish materials like granite or quartz, giving your kitchen a luxurious and functional makeover. Enhance the lighting by installing new fixtures or adding under-cabinet lighting for improved visibility and ambiance. Don’t forget about the backsplash—choose tiles in autumnal colors or opt for a nature-inspired pattern. Finally, add decorative touches like seasonal centerpieces or a cozy breakfast nook, complete with comfortable seating and warm lighting. With a kitchen makeover, you’ll create a space that is not only visually appealing but also conducive to preparing delicious meals and gathering with loved ones during the autumn season.

Create a Cozy Fireplace Area

As the temperature drops, creating a cozy fireplace area becomes a top priority. Consider updating your fireplace with a fresh coat of paint, choosing warm, earthy tones that evoke the essence of autumn. Enhance the visual appeal by installing new tiles or a stone surround that complements the color scheme. If you don’t have a fireplace, explore options for a gas or electric insert that provides both warmth and a charming focal point. Arrange cozy seating nearby, complete with soft throws and plush pillows, to create a comfortable nook where you can curl up with a book or enjoy quality time with loved ones. A revamped fireplace area will become the heart of your home during the autumn months, radiating warmth and coziness.

Boost Energy Efficiency and Maintain Exterior

Prepare your home for the changing seasons by focusing on energy efficiency and exterior maintenance. Inspect windows and doors for any drafts and seal them to prevent heat loss. Upgrade insulation in your attic and walls to ensure your home remains comfortable throughout autumn. Install weather stripping around doors and windows, and consider replacing outdated thermostats with programmable or smart thermostats to optimize energy usage. On the exterior, inspect the roof for damaged shingles, clean out gutters, and trim tree branches that could potentially cause damage during storms. Give your home a fresh coat of paint or stain to protect it from the elements and enhance its curb appeal. Don’t forget to aerate the lawn, apply fall fertilizer, and plant autumn flowers for a vibrant and inviting exterior. By addressing energy efficiency and exterior maintenance, you’ll ensure your home is ready for the autumn season.

Create an Inviting Outdoor Retreat

Maximize your enjoyment of the beautiful autumn weather by transforming your outdoor space into an inviting retreat. Install a fire pit or patio heater to extend outdoor usability into the cooler evenings. Create comfortable seating areas with cozy outdoor furniture, adorned with warm-hued cushions and blankets. Consider adding string lights or lanterns to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Enhance the cozy atmosphere with fall-themed decorations such as pumpkins, gourds and autumn wreaths. If you have a garden, plant late-blooming flowers or add autumnal plants to create a vibrant display of colors. An outdoor retreat will allow you to savor the beauty of the season, host gatherings with friends and family, or simply relax in nature’s embrace.

teacher in the spotlight

CONNIE PEREZ

Fourth Grade, Valley View Elementary School

Connie Perez was born and raised in Bonners Ferry, and in many ways, she exemplifies what it means to be a member of her community.

"I had a wonderful childhood growing up here with my family, cousins and close friends, living that laid-back Bonners Ferry life," Connie recalled. "I now enjoy teaching in the same building that I attended for fifth through eighth grade.

“This is my home and my community, and I feel blessed to be able to teach our community's children," she added.

Connie recently began her 35th year of teaching fourth grade at Valley View Elementary School, but her initial inspiration to become a teacher came when she was in third grade at Northside Elementary.

"I thought [my teacher] Miss Connor was the best, and I loved every day of that year," Connie shared. "I still remember learning my multiplication facts and trying to estimate the time interval of one minute."

As she got older, Connie thought about some other options, but ultimately, she knew she enjoyed school and children, and she kept coming back to the idea of teaching.

"It has been the right choice for me," she confirmed.

Throughout her teaching career, Connie has been fortunate to work alongside fellow educators like Dottie Gray and Doreen Beck, who share her passion for her students.

Connie explained that teaching elementary school requires patience, flexibility, and a willingness to grow and adapt.

"In education, I believe we are continuously learning along with the kids," Connie examined. "I used to be able to help others with the technology in the classroom. Now I rely on the younger teachers to help me out, even when they tease me about how large my text is on my phone."

Today, in addition to her teaching duties, Connie is a member of multiple committees within the Boundary County School District (BCSD), helping to make decisions on important issues like curriculum choices, report card revisions and curriculum mapping.

Aside from teaching, Connie enjoys spending time with her son Jake and his wife Kara, and the rest of her family and her friends. She appreciates the "simple things" like sitting around a campfire, playing board or card games, crafting, mountain drives or watching the kids play ball games, and she loves to read daily and watch a good movie every now and then.

Ultimately, throughout every step of her career, Connie's love for her students has been the driving force behind all that she does.

"My favorite aspect of teaching in BCSD will always be the kids," Connie explained. "They teach me perspective and help me to keep laughing at myself. I enjoy being with the kids, learning new things, laughing, playing, and watching them grow in so many ways."

Student-Athlete in the spotlight

Throughout her first three years at Bonners Ferry High School (BFHS), some of Emma Tompkins best memories have been made on the soccer pitch.

Emma has appreciated the opportunities to spend time with her friends and teammates, and she has grown in her abilities as a midfielder and forward, but her favorite part of being on the BFHS Girls Soccer squad has been playing for Head Coach Emily Winebark.

"I enjoy [Coach Winebark]," Emma said. "She treats us all equal and makes the sport enjoyable. The girls are [also] close and treat each other well on and off the field."

Last fall, during her junior season, Emma stepped up and was a key contributor on the Lady Badgers team that surprised a lot of people, finishing 9-7 overall and taking third place in the competitive 3A Intermountain League.

Emma credits Coach Winebark for not only helping her sharpen her soccer skills but also encouraging her as a student and young woman as well.

"[Coach] Winebark has influenced my growth the most in school and soccer," Emma noted. "I have grown a lot through high school with the help of many teachers."

Aside from athletics and academics, Emma loves to get involved at BFHS by supporting school spirit and attending her friends' sporting events to cheer on her fellow Badgers.

Outside of BFHS, Emma often goes fishing, hunting and hiking when the weather allows, and she enjoys spending time with the people that she loves. "My favorite thing to do is spend time with my family outdoors," Emma described.

Emma is looking forward to making the most of her senior year and soaking in all the memories she can make along the way. After graduation in the spring, her plan is to attend the University of Idaho.

Wherever Emma ends up in the future, she hopes that the lessons that she has learned from Coach Winebark and the rest of the BFHS community will guide her every step of the way.

MEET THE FRIENDS OF Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge

Local nonprofit supports and promotes wildlife refuge through outdoor education programs and community events

Linda Ellett-Fee started working for the U.S. Forest Service at the age of 19, and she spent her entire 38-year career in North Idaho and Eastern Washington fulfilling roles ranging from silviculturist to district ranger.

But once she retired, Linda's affinity for the outdoors stuck with her. That is when she first considered joining the Friends of Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge (KNWR).

“My desire to be a steward of the land somehow did not go away after retirement," Linda noted. “And I have always been interested in the Wildlife Refuge System.”

Ten years later, Linda is now the president of Friends of KNWR, which supports the wildlife refuge in Boundary County through community engagement and outdoor education.

In the early 1900s, migratory birds across America were being decimated by hunters, leading to the establishment of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) in 1918, prohibiting the killing, capturing and selling of protected migratory bird species.

Thanks to the MBTA, the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge was later approved in 1964, and through land purchases over the next 20 years, it was expanded to its current 2,774-acre property.

According the KNWR's website, the refuge has more than 300 species of wildlife, including 223 species of birds that have been overserved there.

As Linda explained, Friends of KNWR was formed in 2006 with the mission "to support and promote the KNWR in its mission, through education and interpretation, and volunteering.”

The group donates to The International Selkirk Loop organization, which help to attract tourists to the area by highlighting the KNWR in its Selkirk Loop travel guide.

“The KNWR is a large attraction for people passing through,” Linda examined. “And much of that is due to the Friends group’s promotions.”

Other events and opportunities that Friends of KNWR have facilitated include partnering with the Kootenai Tribe to bring Birds of Prey Northwest to the local elementary schools, leading a fly-fishing workshop, putting on a bullfrog education program, and hosting author and teacher Jack Nisbet for a seminar.

“In the past, we have put on all manner of wildlife presentations, as well as local geology, archeology, David Thompson history, photo workshops, educational hikes, art shows and the list goes on,” Linda added.

She and the group are always looking for new volunteers to join the group, which asks only for a $10 annual membership fee.

Linda credits the group's Board of Directors, who "make everything happen," for their hard work and dedication to Friends of KNWR and its mission. This board includes Allen and Jan Rose, charter members of the organization, Linda's husband Jeff Fee, as well as Steve Jamsa, Nancy Weatherstone, and Carol and Chuck Giordano.

“We are a team, not one person is in charge,” Linda noted. “Everyone is hardworking and contributes 100 percent. And everyone is passionate about our mission.”

Ultimately, as she reflects on what she enjoys most in her position as president of Friends of KNWR and all that she gets to do to support the community and promote outdoor education, Linda knows she is exactly where she needs to be.

“What I like most is easy,” Linda explained. “The beauty of the place.

“The natural environment is similar to what it used to be before development, watching hundreds of birds in flight or on the water or a moose traveling across a field,” she continued. “We need places like this, apart from the rest, that are there to hold a spot for the good of everything else on the earth besides us and our personal needs.”

To learn more and get involved, you can call the refuge at 208.267.3888 or email knwrfriends@gmail.com and ask about Friends of KNWR. You can also visit FriendsofKootenaiNationalWildlifeRefuge.org or search "Friends of Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge" on Facebook to get connected.

A Little Pampering Goes a Long Way

Discover your confidence with Bellagente!

Celebrating two years in business this past June, Krystal Maas could not be prouder of what she and her team have accomplished since opening the doors of Bellagente, here in Bonners Ferry, in 2021, crediting the success she has experienced professionally to her family, her salon girls and the community. “Without them, we would be nothing, and we are blessed daily with a full schedule and dinner on the table.

“Being recognized and supported by this community has meant so much to us girls! I cannot believe it has been two successful years. We get to meet the best people and hear their stories on how they came to Bonners Ferry. I cannot thank every single client enough for allowing us to treat you with our individual art and skill.”

The journey that led to Bellagente began while Krystal was expecting her first son. She had lost her job while on maternity leave and was given the opportunity to enroll in school. “I knew this was my chance to give my son a better life, so I headed straight to Sandpoint School of Hair Design and started nail school,” she smiles. Thirteen years of experience later, she is living her dream as owner of Bellagente.

34

A full-service salon, Bellagente’s offerings include manicures and pedicures, acrylics and gel sets, full-service hair with cuts and colors, face waxing, natural lash lifts and teeth whitening. Looking to accessorize your new look? They carry a local jewelry line, crafted by Pioneer Lodge, as well as hair and body products.

When a guest enters Bellagente, they will be greeted by one of the friendly stylists or technicians. Then it’s time to kick back with a nice beverage (hot or cold), enjoy the music or a light read, while they take care of the rest! No childcare? No worries! They invite you to bring your child along. “Everyone needs a break sometimes, and we try our best to allow everyone a great experience and appointment,” notes Krystal. “We are small but mighty and go out of our way to get you in and on your way—with a smile.”

Krystal, who is an experienced nail tech specializing in hand-sculpted hard gel nails, is joined by her fabulous team of salon girls: Inga Brown, cosmetologist (blonding and fashion colors), Nicole Mayhew, cosmetologist (blonding, toning and scalp massage), and Laura Neumeyer (lash technician). “The girls I have had the opportunity to work with in the past and currently all have a special place in my heart!” smiles Krystal. “We have laughed. We have cried. We have grown with one another, and I would not change that

a bit. Salon sisters is a very powerful thing, and sometimes you’re with them more than your own family. These girls are family.”

What Kyrstal has found most fulfilling in this endeavor is her ability to help women find their confidence. “There’s nothing like a new set of nails or manicure (or cut and color) to make you feel like a completely different woman,” she affirms. “You just carry yourself differently, and I love that I am a part of that boost.”

Krystal encourages everyone, like herself, to make every day count, work hard, pursue your goals, and be the best you can be! And she reiterates how thankful she is to her staff and community. “Bellagente is nothing without you!”

With the arrival of a new season, there’s no time like the present to let Krystal, Inga, Nicole and Laura treat you to a little pampering and a boost of confidence. You deserve it.

Top treatments and techniques for a youthful glow

36

While a glowing complexion and youthful skin

are always in style, skin-care trends can evolve and change as often as the seasons. Thanks to the latest beauty treatments and technologies, it’s now easier than ever to maintain your skin’s healthy glow into the fall. Start with some of 2023’s most popular skin-care trends:

MINIMALIST ROUTINES

Fall has a way of inspiring change and reigniting routine in every aspect of life. If it’s time to reimagine your skin-care routine this season, we have good news: Minimalism is in. Today’s trending skin-care routines require fewer products and less time (and often as a result, less spending).

With multi-use products and multi-faceted tools offering a handful of skin-friendly benefits at once, skin-care routines have become more streamlined. This comes at perfect timing for maintaining proper skin care during the busy back-to-school season. Serums that pack a punch with vitamins, peptides, antioxidants and soothing acids are an easy way to stay at the top of your skin-care game with minimal product.

your BEST SEASON this SKIN

Advanced all-in-one tools like the TheraFace Pro and the Solawave Skincare Wand make it easy to perform several different therapies from home. The TheraFace Pro’s attachments include gentle pressurized therapy to release facial tension (battle puffiness, along with three different LED light rings to target fine lines, acne and wrinkles. The small, lightweight Solawave 4-in-1 Skincare Wand completes multiple functions, including gentle massage and therapeutic Red Light Therapy.

With carefully multifaceted products and tools, you can streamline your beauty routine right along with your fall schedule.

SKIN CYCLING

Another way to stretch your beauty budget is skin cycling, an approach that involves applying skin-care products intermittently, in a cycle of about four days at a time. Rather than using all of your products every day, you select a few to use during that four-day period. During that time, other products will be put on a ‘rest cycle’ and unused, until their application cycle begins.

Skin cycling promotes the strategic application of products, preventing skin irritation or potentially damaging over-application, by avoiding the use of many active ingredients at once. This technique is often recommended for sensitive skin, or those keeping it simple with the minimalist trend. Just use a few products for a few days, then switch to the others in your arsenal, and repeat.

SKIN SCULPTING TECHNOLOGIES

At salons and med spas, the latest beauty technologies are making it easier than ever to sculpt skin across the face and body. Popular new technologies and tools can quickly tone and tighten targeted areas for noticeable results in less time, all without a need for surgery.

CoolSculpting technology treats the desired area by targeting and freezing skin cells in a light, painless procedure. The cooling procedure causes the fat cells to die off naturally, resulting in enhanced toning and shaping in the affected area. Results typically continue to develop in the weeks following treatment.

Often called a needle-free alternative to fillers and Botox, the Emface uses radiofrequency technology paired with high-intensity electromagnetic stimulation to boost the strengthening, firming proteins in the skin like collagen and elastin. The result: a more sculpted appearance after a minimally invasive treatment that works to build muscle and eliminate fat all at once. With no needles and no recovery time required, Emface is a top choice for keeping the skin lifted and tightened.

Also using electric frequency technology, Emsculpt body sculpting technology can tighten and tone areas of the body in just 30-minute sessions. Results are often noticed in the form of visible slimming and toning, especially around the abs and core.

DEFINED LIPS

Lips are always a top focal point of the face, but the trendiest ways to define them have looked different over the years. Today’s trends celebrate definition over volume, using lighter fillers and opting for popular treatments to enhance the natural shape of the lips. During a lip flip procedure, the provider will typically make several Botox injections to the upper part of the lips. This helps relax (“flip”) the top lip, revealing more lip and less gum, resulting in the appearance of fuller lips without the use of added filler.

LASER SKIN THERAPY

Laser therapy can be highly targeted and used to address a wide array of skin concerns. from banishing dark spots and fine lines, to reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, acne scarring and more.

In-office laser therapies use ultra-focused lasers that can target the desired areas of the skin, removing the outer layer to reveal the healthier skin underneath. The laser’s sharp focus allows this to happen without damage to surrounding tissues. The resulting collagen stimulation and elastin production brings the added benefit of restoring volume to the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

LED LIGHT THERAPY

When it comes to anti-aging therapies, LED light therapy is almost as non-invasive as it gets. It involves using light at different wavelengths

to produce targeted results for regeneration, firmness and texture. Often, a series of 20-minute treatments is recommended. Even better, the treatment involves lying under a machine emitting LED light—a good time to relax and treat your skin all at once!

HEALTH-FOCUSED, HOLISTIC TREATMENTS

Skin health is often about glowing from the inside out. Providers are now more often implementing holistic strategies into their treatment offerings, incorporating aspects of nutrition, metabolism, rejuvenation, mental health, supplementation and more.

Boosting the results of your skin-care routine with proper supplementation can further amplify the results of your beauty regimen, all while supporting total-body wellness. Top skin-supporting supplements often include vitamins A, C and E, collagen, and sun-protective glutathione.

TREAT YOUR SKIN THIS FALL

Everyone deserves some pampering from time to time. Whether it’s from the comfort of your home, or during a visit to your aesthetician, dedicating some time to skin care (and self-care) can help you maintain glowing skin well past summertime. With a minimalist routine and a few key products and treatments, autumn skin care has never been easier!

Inspiring active play for children’s health

Childhood is a phase of life brimming with energy and enthusiasm. It’s an age characterized by exploration, play and physical activity. However, in this digital era, electronic devices can often overshadow traditional play, hindering children’s physical development. To combat this issue, a delightful and engaging approach is to promote exercise through play, which effectively intertwines the benefits of physical activity with the joy of childhood fun.

Exercise is vital for a child’s overall health, enhancing growth, strengthening muscles, refining motor skills and promoting mental well-being. It has also been linked to improved academic performance and self-esteem. The World Health Organization suggests that children aged 5 to 17 should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorousintensity physical activity daily. Encouraging exercise through play can help achieve these recommendations while offering an enjoyable experience to your child.

Play-based exercises can be facilitated both indoors and outdoors, involving a variety of activities such as hide and seek, tag, hopscotch, or even structured sports. These games not only support physical fitness but also stimulate cognitive, emotional and social development.

Outdoor play presents numerous opportunities for enjoyable exercise. Encouraging your child to participate in classic games like tag or capture the flag provides them with a cardiovascular workout while promoting teamwork and strategic thinking. Nature walks and bike rides offer a change of scenery and can stimulate curiosity about the environment. Even gardening can be a source of physical activity and a lesson about nature and responsibility. Outdoor playgrounds are another excellent avenue, where climbing, swinging and sliding aid in muscle development and coordination.

Indoor play can be just as beneficial if the weather or other circumstances don’t allow for outside activities. Create a mini-obstacle course using household items, fostering an adventurous spirit and facilitating coordination and problem-solving skills. Games like “Simon Says” or “Musical Chairs” encourage movement while promoting listening skills and quick decision-making. Dance parties can also be a fun way to get your child moving, fostering creativity and rhythm.

While encouraging exercise through play, it’s important to focus on fun rather than competition. Making the activity enjoyable increases the likelihood that the child will continue to engage in physical activity as they grow older. Additionally, it’s crucial to lead by example; children are more likely to follow an active lifestyle if they see their parents or guardians enjoying physical activities.

parents or guardians enjoying physical activities. Involvement in the choice of activity is another crucial aspect. Offer your child a range of games or sports to choose from, catering to their interests and abilities. This autonomy can significantly increase their motivation to participate.

Combining play and exercise also paves the way for teaching vital life skills. Games involving teams can develop cooperation and communication skills, while solo games can enhance self-confidence and determination. Additionally, introducing the concepts of friendly competition, winning and losing can help children cope with similar situations in the future.

However, while incorporating exercise into play, remember to ensure safety. All activities should be age-appropriate and conducted in a secure environment. Use safety equipment when necessary, like helmets for bike riding or knee pads for rollerblading.

It’s also essential to maintain a balanced approach. Remember that rest and recovery are equally important in a child’s routine. Provide ample time for calm activities such as reading, drawing, or other creative pursuits.

An active childhood sets the foundation for a healthy and happy adulthood. Encouraging exercise through play, while ensuring safety and balance, can truly make fitness an enjoyable part of your child’s life. It is a practical and fun-filled strategy to ensure your child’s health and happiness, ensuring they are well-equipped to face the future.

As a parent or caregiver, it can seem like a daunting task to introduce and maintain an exercise routine for your child, particularly with the allure of screen time and other sedentary activities. However, by making it a playful and enjoyable experience, children are more likely to participate willingly and actively.

To effectively encourage exercise through play, it’s vital to be creative and innovative. Parents can transform mundane chores into fun games. For instance, tidying up can become a race to see who can pick up the most toys in a set time. Even a grocery shopping trip can be made into an activity involving walking and carrying items, while teaching about food groups and healthy choices.

Additionally, technology need not be the enemy of physical activity. There are numerous interactive video games that require physical movement, combining children’s interest in digital platforms with exercise. These games often incorporate dancing, sports and other active pursuits, seamlessly merging screen time with physical activity.

Consider involving your child in age-appropriate exercises that you do as well. Yoga, for example, can be introduced with simple poses, creating a shared experience that encourages mindfulness along with physical activity.

Lastly, it’s essential to praise and positively reinforce your child’s engagement in these play-based activities. Recognition of their efforts can go a long way in motivating them to continue. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small, to instill a sense of accomplishment and positivity toward exercise.

By adopting these strategies, parents can effectively integrate exercise into their child’s daily routine, fostering an enduring appreciation for physical activity. The key lies in making it enjoyable and participatory, effectively ensuring that exercise through play becomes a cherished part of their childhood and beyond.

Recognition of their efforts can go a long way in motivating them to continue.

The Benefits of Routine

Back to school and back on schedule

As we shift back to school, embracing a structured routine can yield unexpected health benefits. An established routine enhances both physical and mental health. On a physical level, maintaining consistent sleep and meal schedules helps regulate our bodies' internal clocks, fostering better sleep and digestion. A nutritious, timely breakfast jumpstarts metabolism and improves concentration, and regular exercise bolsters overall health and energy.

Mentally, routines reduce stress and anxiety. When we know what's coming, we're less likely to feel overwhelmed. Regular study periods support academic success, while scheduled downtime aids relaxation. Importantly, don't forget to incorporate breaks for self-care: reading, meditating, or enjoying a favorite hobby.

Remember, flexibility is key. Routines should be guidelines, not strict rules, and it's healthy to deviate occasionally. Ultimately, routines should support, not hinder, our well-being. Consistency in scheduling can truly pave the way for a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.

Bringing essential medical services closer to home

It's a chronic autoimmune disease that wreaks havoc on the body, causing inflammation in the joints and leading to painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity.

Imagine waking up every morning, and struggling with the simplest of tasks. That's life with rheumatoid arthritis and many other autoimmune disorders. The Infusion and Procedures Clinic represents a significant stride forward in providing comprehensive health care services to treat illnesses like these right within our community.

Made possible through the fundraising by the Fry Healthcare Foundation and the dedicated support of our local community, the clinic offers a range of vital infusions for antibiotics, antivirals, corticosteroids, and immune therapy for autoimmune diseases such as iron deficiency anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, osteoporosis and myasthenia gravis. For someone living with these conditions, these infusions are critical to improving quality of life, and having the option to receive them locally can be life changing.

Alongside blood administration, it provides medication administration, intravenous fluid administration, hydration therapy, vascular access care and phlebotomy. All these services are provided with utmost care and professionalism by a team of highly trained and empathetic health care professionals.

As an outpatient facility, the clinic also specializes in various procedures such as thoracentesis, paracentesis, nerve blocks, PICC line placement and lumbar punctures. This ensures that essential procedures can be accessed conveniently, without the need for longdistance travel.

In addition to these services, the Infusion and Procedures Clinic provides crucial support for patients, who require specialty medications. If a particular medication is ineffective in its standard pill form, the clinic offers a valuable alternative through infusion therapy. This is vital for people who need central line care/ troubleshooting and IV-line insertion and maintenance.

If you're unsure about the specific medications offered or have a special request, the staff at the clinic is always ready to help. You can reach out to them at 208.267.3141 ext. 4249. They are committed to accommodating the diverse needs of our community.

However, to access the services at the Infusion and Procedures Clinic, it's necessary to have an order sent from your primary care physician. The clinic's team will then work with your insurance to attain pre-authorization.

The addition of the Infusion and Procedures Clinic at Boundary Community Hospital has made a significant difference. Bringing essential health care services within our community is a comfort and a relief. The convenience of receiving necessary treatments close to home is invaluable.

Nutrient-Packed Granola Bars

Perfect snack for kids—and adults—on the go!

Tip

Ingredients

Ingredients

2 cups rolled oats

1 cup nuts

(almonds, walnuts or cashews), chopped

1/2 cup dried fruits

(raisins, cranberries or chopped dates)

1/4 cup honey or maple syrup

1/4 cup nut butter (peanut butter or almond butter)

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup ground flaxseed

1/4 cup shredded coconut

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/2 tsp. cinnamon (optional)

A pinch of salt

These nutrient-packed granola bars are versatile, and you can customize them by adding other ingredients like chia seeds, dark chocolate chips, or even protein powder to boost their nutritional value. Enjoy!

Method

Method

• Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a baking dish or pan with parchment paper and set aside.

• In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, chopped nuts, dried fruits, ground flaxseed, shredded coconut, cinnamon (if using) and salt. Mix well.

• In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the honey or maple syrup, nut butter, coconut oil and vanilla extract. Stir until everything is melted and well combined. Remove from heat.

• Pour the wet mixture over the dry ingredients in the mixing bowl. Use a spatula or your hands to mix everything together until all the dry ingredients are coated and evenly distributed.

• Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish or pan. Use your hands or the back of a spoon to press it down firmly and make sure it’s evenly spread.

• Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown.

• Remove from the oven and let it cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, refrigerate for about an hour to firm up.

• Once the granola mixture is firm, remove it from the pan and cut it into bars or squares of your desired size.

• Store the granola bars in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for longer shelf life.

A Night For the Museum returns for an evening of camaraderie in support of our local museum

This fall marks the 12th year of A Night For the Museum, a fundraising event open to museum members and business sponsors, and then to the public (if seats are still available). This intimate event, open to just 100 guests, provides food and fellowship, games, historical teasers and a live auction, making it popular and enjoyable for all in attendance year after year.

At the time Boundary County Museum buildings were acquired in 2006, the museum was functioning on a limited budget. The old buildings (dating back to 1917 and 1920) were in desperate need of repairs and renovations. “With that in mind, the Board of Trustees put their heads together and tossed ideas around the table, coming up with the idea of a fundraising dinner,” says John Standal, chairman of the Fundraising Dinner Committee in 2010. And A Night for the Museum was born.

“The success of this event is due to generous sponsors, members and dinner goers who enjoy it as a social event, as well as an opportunity to explore the museum, while helping to raise needed funds,” affirms Cal Russell, current president of Boundary County Historical Society. “One of the many highlights of the event is completing a fun and yet competitive historical game activity as a group, based upon a predetermined theme chosen by the museum staff. The live auction generates competition, lively bidding wars and satisfied winners.”

The 2023 date has been set for Saturday, October 14. Once invitations have been sent to members of the museum and

14 October

business sponsors, if any open seats remain, tickets will become available to the public.

Since the event’s inception, funds raised have been designated for roof and building repairs, upgrades in lighting and UV shades for the protection of artifacts on display in the exhibits, a furnace upgrade (in the 1920 building) and the installation of a networking system of computers for the Archives Room. As of press time, the Board of Trustees had not yet determined the designation for the dinner/auction funds.

“Many people consider the museum a real gem or treasure of Boundary County,” shares Dave Gray, current vice president of Boundary County Historical Society. “The purpose of the Boundary County Historical Society shall be to bring together persons interested in the history of Boundary County; to promote further interest in the heritage of this area; to gather information, objects and materials relative to its history and development; and to carry on education programs concerning this region. The community's support at this event helps to achieve this mission.”

For those interested in becoming a member of the museum, a sponsor for events, or a museum volunteer, Dottie Gray, secretary for the museum, encourages you to stop by (7229 Main Street in Bonners Ferry). You can also call the museum at 208.267.7720 or send an email to bcmuseum@meadowcrk.com. Be sure to check out the website at BoundaryCountyMuseum.org and like them on Facebook.
