Embracing Change: A Journey Through Transformation and Growth

As the seasons shift, so too does our community. We watch the familiar ebb and flow, and while a part of us often resists these changes, the truth is that change is essential. Growth can't happen in stillness—it thrives in the transitions and moments when the world around us begins to evolve.

I won’t use the old caterpillar-turned-butterfly metaphor. Still, the sentiment holds: change challenges us because it disrupts our routines, sense of comfort, and attachment to what we know. And yet, in these moments of discomfort, we find new opportunities, perspectives, and strengths.

As we prepare to say goodbye to the warmth of summer and welcome the crispness of fall, let us embrace the inevitable changes around us. In this issue, we delve into not just the shifting seasons but the new opportunities they bring. From the anticipation

of North Idaho Classical Academy's opening in the fall of 2025, highlighted in 'An American Classical Education for Modern Times,' to the inspiring journey of Red Falcon Ranch and Caprine in 'A Story of Family, Inspiration, and Determination,' there's much to discover within these pages. And as you explore local activities to enjoy this fall in Boundary County, you'll find even more stories that capture the essence of our community. Dive in, and let these stories guide you through the season's transformations and possibilities.

Here's to new beginnings, growth, and the beauty of embracing what’s next.

By combining these various modalities, medical spas provide a thorough strategy to combat aging, allowing clients to age gracefully and confidently with noticeable improvements in both appearance and overall health.

Combining luxury and comfort, medical spas provide a pampering experience that enhances overall wellness. OFF GRID DOC: REVOLUTIONIZING HEALTH CARE IN BONNERS FERRY

From personal healing to professional caregiving

Nestled along Highway 95 in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Off Grid Doc stands out not just for its scenic location but for its innovative approach to health care. Founded by Dr. Ramon Issa and his wife Celeste in June 2021, their practice has quickly become a beacon of hope for many seeking alternatives to the conventional medical model.

Dr. Issa’s journey into medicine has been both profound and personal. Graduating from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 2001, he has worn many hats — from a family practitioner to an emergency medicine specialist in critical access hospitals. However, it was a personal health crisis that reshaped his medical philosophy. After his father passed away from metabolic-related health issues and facing his own health struggles, Dr. Issa embarked on a transformative journey. Weighing 308 pounds with mounting health issues, he decided to rethink his lifestyle and medical practice. “In May of 2017, I started thinking ‘outside the box’ of medicine that I had practiced,” he recalls. Over the next 100 days, he lost 94 pounds and revitalized his health without surgery, special exotic supplements nor an expensive gym membership — he simply changed his lifestyle and nutrition.

Inspired by his transformation and encouraged by family and friends, Dr. Issa, alongside Celeste — who manages everything from scheduling to billing and medical assistance — opened Off Grid Doc. “We started this practice with the desire to provide patients with an alternative to the medical options that are available in the mainstream medical system that many feel is broken,” explains Dr. Issa. Off Grid Doc is a membership-based Direct Primary Care practice specializing in weight loss and metabolic health. It offers comprehensive care through yearly and monthly memberships, including detailed initial consultations and specialized programs for metabolic health and weight loss.

What sets Off Grid Doc apart is its deeply personal approach to health care. The practice operates from a home-like setting, creating a relaxed environment where patients feel genuinely heard. “We do not accept insurance, which allows us to spend much more time with our patients, fully addressing their medical needs,” says Dr. Issa. This model enables them to focus on the root causes of illnesses rather than merely managing symptoms with medication.

Dr. Issa and Celeste are also deeply embedded in the Bonners Ferry community. Having moved to the area for its strong Christian values and supportive environment for homeschoolers, they are active in their local church and participate in community activities like the Rod Benders Car Club. Their faith and community service are integral to their identity and practice.

For Dr. Issa, the most rewarding aspect of his work is providing alternatives for healing. “We enjoy helping people reduce or eliminate their prescription medication and heal their bodies from symptoms of metabolic dysfunction,” he shares. His method involves using intermittent fasting, low-carb diets and the ketogenic diet, tailored to each individual’s needs, proving that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to health.

Off Grid Doc is more than just a medical practice; it’s a place where healing begins with understanding and caring. As Dr. Issa puts it, “We are successful when our patients have completed our program and have reached their goals of weight loss or reduced their need for prescription medications.” Through their innovative approach, Dr. Ramon and Celeste Issa are not just practicing medicine; they are transforming lives, one patient at a time.

‘an american
Classical Education for modern times'

NORTH IDAHO CLASSICAL ACADEMY TO OPEN ITS DOORS IN THE FALL OF 2025

North Idaho Classical Academy (NICA) is coming to Bonners Ferry with plans to open its doors to students come the 2025-2026 school year! Rooted in a collective desire to establish a school that adheres to classical education principles, the founders of NICA are made up of a diverse group of community members with various backgrounds: Lena Cordle, Riley Diehl, Christa Eby, Dave Goodenough, Kaite Gorman, Sheraya Hauck, Lynsee Leonard, Miranda Schaeffer and Liesl Woomert. “The founding group has focused to provide a rigorous and traditional liberal arts education to emphasize critical thinking, moral character, and a comprehensive understanding of Western heritage,” Jacob Francom, NICA principal, states.

The establishment of North Idaho Classical Academy has been in the works for four years now, during which time the founding group has evolved, with many individuals contributing to the effort at different stages. Jacob adds, “Their persistence and dedication have been crucial in bringing the school to fruition.”

NICA is part of the American Classical Schools of Idaho, a charter support organization that oversees its governance, with the philosophy and approach for a “classical education for modern times.” The school will utilize the Hillsdale College K-12 curriculum, which focuses on fostering critical thinking, effective communication, and a strong grasp of classical literature, history and philosophy. The integration of character education and a strong sense of civic responsibility further enriches students' educational experience.

The campus, which is situated on 13.5 acres just 5 miles outside of town (at 147 Emerson Lane in Bonners Ferry), will provide a pristine and serene environment, while the expansive grounds offer ample space for outdoor activities and exploration, creating a tranquil atmosphere that is conducive to learning and personal growth. “The peaceful surroundings will help students concentrate, reflect, and immerse themselves in

their studies, making NICA an exceptional place to learn and thrive,” Jacob notes.

As North Idaho Classical Academy continues to prepare for its opening, the staff is focused on several crucial tasks, according to Jacob. “We are setting up and remodeling facilities, ordering necessary materials, and securing the charter approval from the state. Additionally, we are seeking grant funding for buses, materials, desks and chairs. Our team is also busy developing handbooks, promoting the school within the community, hosting information sessions and conducting tours.”

Jacob emphasizes that community support is essential for the successful opening of NICA. The community can show their support in several ways: Stay up to date on the school’s progress. Consider enrolling your children in NICA. Make donations to support the school’s needs. “This collaborative effort will help ensure that NICA is well-equipped to welcome students in the fall of 2025,” Jacob smiles.

Enrollment is open to serve students from kindergarten through sixth grade for its first academic year. The school plans to add an additional grade each year until it reaches grade 12. As NICA is a public charter school, there is no tuition cost for students to attend.

“Our ultimate goal at North Idaho Classical Academy is deeply rooted in our mission ‘to train the minds and improve the hearts of students through a classical, content-rich curriculum that emphasizes virtuous living, traditional learning and civic responsibility,’” Jacob reiterates. “As stated in our mission, our aim is not only to educate but to shape the character of our students, preparing them for a life of excellence and service.”

a story of Family L inspiration and

Determination

ocated just north of Bonners Ferry is where you will find Red Falcon Ranch, owned by Todd and Angela Abraham, and helped run by their two daughters Rachel and Sarah. Here the family raises angora goats for their mohair, often called “the diamond fiber” due to its silky soft fiber and how lustrous it is, with the mohair then used for products through their brand Caprine.

Angora goats are a single-purpose goat. They are not for milking or meat but produce usable mohair all their lives. “We micron test all of our fleeces for fineness; the lower the micron, the finer and softer the mohair,” Angela explains. “The finest mohair becomes socks and throws; the remainder is used for utility goods such as rugs and horse tack.”

IT’S TIME TO DISCOVER RED FALCON RANCH AND CAPRINE

Selling fleeces “one fleece at a time” was a lot of work, Angela recalls, and by 2019, they had too many fleeces in storage. She had heard about the USDA value-added producer grant and decided to pursue it to make useful goods out of their goats’ mohair. It took two years and a feasibility study to win the competitive grant, which provided them the ability to create a brand identity, Caprine, and produce the first production run of socks and throws.

Believe you can do it. Never give up. Always have hope.

Angela submitted the completed grant in May of 2021. In July, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. That August, she found out that she had won the grant. “Without hesitation, my mom accepted the grant, knowing that she would also be going through chemo, radiation and surgery,” Sarah recalls. “She worked on product concepts and prototypes with a couple family owned mills until she found one that worked just right with mohair. She worked on branding and packaging. She had Zoom calls with no hair on her head. While sitting in the chemo chair for infusions, she was answering emails. Through chemotherapy, a lumpectomy, then mastectomy, and then radiation, she was working on building Caprine. And every morning, she was out doing chores taking care of her goats.”

Angela homeschooled her daughters, who went on to attend the University of Idaho, both graduating with honors in May of 2023. Angela shares that Rachel majored in wildlife resources and minored in French and rangeland ecology management. To pay her way through school, she worked for the Forest Service in Bonners Ferry as a wildland firefighter. As for Sarah, she majored in small business and entrepreneurship. Sarah also runs her own business called Pine Rose and Co., an online yarn reseller business that she started at 17 years old, which paid her way through college. Both girls also studied abroad; Rachel for three semesters and Sarah two.

“I have always encouraged them to never just settle, learn as much as you can, study history, explore, and enjoy the journey,” Angela smiles.

After graduating, the sisters backpacked through Europe for three months, then came home to work on the ranch and Caprine. Sarah built the website for Caprine, which launched in November of 2023. Caprine is run by Angela and Sarah with help from Rachel, while Red Falcon Ranch is run by Rachel with the help of Angela and Sarah. “Together, the three of us run both businesses and wear lots of hats,” Angela affirms.

Despite the challenges faced, Angela encourages, “Believe you can do it. Never give up. Always have hope. I am 18 months cancer free. I didn’t let cancer stop me, in fact, it challenged me to do even greater things. Working with my daughters has been amazing, and I am so thankful for this time with them. They are incredible women with so much talent.”

North Idaho Family Dentistry: Modern Care, Community Focus

Innovative dental treatments with small-town commitment by

In Bonners Ferry, North Idaho Family Dentistry has established itself as a leader in modern dental care, balancing advanced treatments with a deep connection to the local community. Under the guidance of Dr. Taylor Geyman, DDS, this practice has been serving patients since 2017, offering a blend of cutting-edge technology and small-town values that sets it apart in the region.

Dr. Geyman, a Bonners Ferry native, brings a wealth of expertise to the practice. He is skilled in various specialties, including sedation, oral surgery, implants, and prosthetics. His roots in the area run deep, with his family moving to Bonners Ferry over 20 years ago.

“We love offering sedation or ‘comfort dentistry,’ being on the edge of technology, and keeping up with the latest in the industry,” says Dr. Geyman, highlighting the practice’s commitment to patient comfort and innovation.

What distinguishes North Idaho Family Dentistry from other practices in the area is its unique range of services. From anti-wrinkle injections and therapeutic injections with Botox or Xeomin to sedation dentistry and implant placement, the practice offers comprehensive care that meets the diverse needs of its patients. Dr. Geyman explains, “Offering these services makes our practice unique compared to others in the

area.” By providing these specialized treatments locally, North Idaho Family Dentistry ensures that patients can access high-quality care without the need to travel far from home.

One of the standout services at North Idaho Family Dentistry is the administration of Botox and Xeomin injections. These treatments, provided by Dr. Jessica Horricks or Ashley Martinez, RN, address various conditions, including wrinkles, headaches, and jaw pain. “We reverse wrinkles, relieve jaw pain, and reduce frequent headaches and migraines,” says Dr. Geyman, emphasizing these injections’ dual cosmetic and therapeutic benefits. Patients begin with a consultation to determine the best course of action, and treatment can often be administered on the same day.

The practice’s dedication to patient comfort is further evident in its approach to sedation dentistry. North Idaho Family Dentistry offers a range of sedation options, from Nitrous Oxide to IV sedation, ensuring every patient can undergo dental procedures in a calm, stress-free environment. Dr. Geyman describes the typical experience as “One or two visits to collaborate with the patient on a plan for oral health that blends our recommendations with patient wishes. We can typically schedule your sedation visit quickly, focusing

on maintaining a relaxing and safe environment and ensuring you don’t have a memory of the visit. Sedation typically provides for a better healing experience.”

North Idaho Family Dentistry is also a leader in the provision of implant dentures, offering both snap-in and fixed options. These advanced dental solutions significantly improve traditional dentures, giving patients excellent stability and confidence. “Implant dentures have been life-changing for patients,” notes Dr. Geyman. With benefits such as reduced bulkiness, better retention, and the elimination of adhesive, these dentures represent a significant advancement in dental care.

The success of North Idaho Family Dentistry is not solely due to its advanced services but also to the dedicated team and supportive community that surrounds it. “An amazing and knowledgeable staff and supportive community,” Dr. Geyman acknowledges, have played a crucial role in the practice’s growth and positive reputation. The team’s involvement in local organizations like 4H and Parks & Rec underscores their commitment to giving back to the community that has embraced them so warmly.

For Dr. Geyman and his team, being part of the Bonners Ferry community is one of the most rewarding aspects of their work. “We love to give back to the community that gives us so much. We also strive to buy local as much as possible,” Dr. Geyman shares, reflecting the practice’s deeprooted values and dedication to patient care and community involvement.

As North Idaho Family Dentistry continues to grow and evolve, it remains steadfast in its mission to provide the latest advancements in dental care while staying true to the small-town values that have earned it a trusted place in the Bonners Ferry community.

Autumn Garden Magic:

1 3 ESSENTIAL CLEANUP TIPS

Remove Dead and Diseased Plants: Clear out any dead or diseased plants from your garden to prevent pests and diseases from overwintering. Compost healthy plant debris but dispose of any diseased material to avoid contamination.

2 3

Mulch Your Garden Beds: Apply a layer of mulch to your garden beds to protect the soil during the winter months. Mulching helps regulate soil temperature, retain moisture and prevent erosion.

Prune Perennials and Shrubs: Trim back perennials and prune shrubs to tidy up the garden and encourage healthy growth in the spring. Focus on removing dead or damaged branches and shaping plants as needed.

COZY FALL RECIPE

DELICIOUS Pumpkin CHILI

Ingredients

1 tbsp. olive oil

• 1 medium onion, diced

• 3 cloves garlic, minced

1 bell pepper (red or green), diced

• 1 medium carrot, diced

• 2 cups fresh pumpkin, cubed

1 pound ground turkey or beef

• 1 (15-oz.) can black beans, drained and rinsed

• 1 (15-oz.) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed

• 1 (14.5-oz.) can diced tomatoes

2 cups vegetable or chicken broth

• 1 tbsp. chili powder

• 1 tsp. ground cumin

1 tsp. smoked paprika

• 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

• Salt and pepper to taste

Optional toppings: shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, fresh cilantro, avocado slices

Method

1. Heat the oil. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

2. Sauté the vegetables. Add the diced onion, minced garlic, diced bell pepper, diced carrot and cubed pumpkin. Cook until the vegetables are soft, about 5 to 7 minutes.

3. Cook the meat. Add the ground turkey or beef to the pot. Cook until the meat is browned and cooked through, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.

4. Add the beans and tomatoes. Stir in the black beans, kidney beans and diced tomatoes.

5. Add the broth and spices. Pour in the vegetable or chicken broth. Add the chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, ground cinnamon, salt and pepper. Stir to combine.

6. Simmer the chili. Bring the chili to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld together.

7. Adjust seasoning. Taste the chili and adjust the seasoning as needed, adding more salt, pepper and/or spices to suit your taste.

8. Serve. Ladle the chili into bowls and top with your favorite toppings, such as shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, fresh cilantro or avocado slices. Or all of the above!

9. Enjoy your warm and hearty Autumn Pumpkin Chili! This recipe is perfect for cozy fall nights and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
