ORGANIZATION WITH A CAUSE Hope House Since 2009, Hope House has been a steadfast source of support in Boundary County, extending aid to families and individuals facing hardships. Eli and Anna Pine, who took over in 2022, emphasize its mission of aiding those facing financial difficulties or emergencies. “Our mission is to help those in need,” Eli shares, underscoring their commitment to providing essential items to those in crisis. Hope House strengthens the community with programs like the annual Back to School Bash, where local children receive school supplies and shoes, enabling them to start the year on the right foot. The organization has also hosted fundraisers and community dinners and provided emergency aid to families who have lost homes to fire. Local groups, including the Robotics Club and Leadership, regularly join Hope House’s efforts, demonstrating the collective spirit of the area. Guided by the motto, “Simply here to help with no strings attached,” Hope House offers food, clothing, and household essentials with guidelines designed for immediate, supportive assistance. “We are always looking for other ways to expand what we do,” Eli explains, inviting others to contribute ideas and donations to further their outreach. Through the community’s generosity, Hope House continues to bring hope and vital resources to those who need them most. 5100 Camelot Lane Duplex A, Moyie Springs 208.946.9947 f @Hope-House-of-Boundary-County TheHopeHouse.us

FINEST PERSON OF THE YEAR Terry Huggins Terry Huggins, a 71-year-old Bonners Ferry native, embodies resilience and dedication. Despite enduring significant health challenges, including severe nerve and tendon damage from a reaction to an antibiotic a decade ago, Terry refused to sit still. With the support of his wife, Sue, and their family, including their two daughters, Christa and April, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, he found a purpose—cleaning the roads of Bonners Ferry. Averaging a thousand miles annually, Terry walks highways, county roads, and campgrounds, picking up trash and taking the time to recycle what he can to reduce landfill use.
L’S
23
“I have always loved living here. If I can change one person’s attitude about throwing out trash, then it’s all been worth it,” he says. Terry’s community has supported his mission, providing him with supplies and covering fuel expenses. However, Terry’s road cleanup efforts paused due to health setbacks this summer. His hands worsened, and his balance became a struggle. Yet, the community rallied for him. A group called “Trash for Terry” took action, with people from multiple states joining the effort.

Grateful for his community’s support and with his family by his side, Terry remains hopeful: “I am hoping that by spring I will be able to get back out on the roads cleaning them again.”

FINEST TEACHER OF THE YEAR Lauren Bartoe
Valley View Elementary Lauren Bartoe, a dedicated educator at Valley View Elementary in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, has inspired young minds for 14 years. Her teaching journey was shaped by her enjoyment of being around children and her passion for creative problem-solving. After earning dual degrees in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Grove City College in Pennsylvania, Lauren gained international experience in London before completing her Master’s in Educational Leadership at Edinboro University. She returned to her hometown to teach and two years later made her way to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, where she found her home in the kindergarten classroom. Inspired by her grandmother, who taught third grade for 30 years, Lauren remembers her as “one of the best people I have ever known, kind, loving, patient, and calm.” Lauren’s teaching style reflects that. “I want kindergarten to be a positive experience,” she shares, often using funny voices during storytime or dressing up in outlandish outfits to keep her students excited about school. “My favorite thing to do in class is read stories out loud. Finding a good book and sharing my excitement with kids—and having them beg to hear stories over and over again—is a joy that not many people get to experience.” Lauren values the countless connections she’s made with families over the years. She believes small gestures of appreciation, like a smile or a favorite coffee, mean the world to teachers who give so much of themselves every day.

or the holiday season ahead, embracing online shopping or big-box retailers is tempting. But you can make each gift special this year by buying locally in Bonners Ferry. When you support local businesses, you’re doing more than making a purchase. You’re investing in our community and the people who call it home, helping to create a local economy that benefits everyone. And while it’s important during the holiday season, supporting local businesses year-round can keep our town thriving. Shopping locally means going to the very businesses that make Bonners Ferry unique. Take Mane Street Hair Design, 6451 McCall Street, for instance. It is a full-service salon that offers everything from hair to nails to tanning, and gift certificates are great holiday gifts. If you spend locally at places such as Mane Street Hair Design, you aren’t just getting personalized, specialized care — you are helping to keep these services in our town. Each time you support a small business, you contribute more life to our community. Gifts from Teascarlet Fine Art are not only beautiful, but you also support your local artists and have a piece of locally made home décor in your home. Supporting small businesses helps keep Bonners Ferry's creative spirit alive, allowing our artists to thrive and share their talents with others. Shopping at Maas Designs, located inside Turner Plumbing LLC at 138 Latigo Lane, is also a oneof-a-kind experience. Locally crafted, Maas Designs creates custom pieces on wood, slate, and metals. If you shop at Bonners Ferry businesses, you not only receive something special and curated, but you’re also buying from people who love their customers and their communities. For example, at Teascarlet Fine Art, every painting and sculpture is created with a sense of detail and an eye for beauty, making each purchase unique. These local experiences make local shopping all the more uplifting than going to a big-box retailer. There’s something about simply walking around downtown Bonners Ferry and stopping into Under the Sun to get some
holiday decorations or special gift items that add to the shopping experience. It’s sentimental to be in the local shops, meeting your friends, and being part of the community. Those little acts keep us connected and make us realize the importance of supporting our neighbors. Shopping local isn’t just for the holidays: it’s a year-round investment in Bonners Ferry. Businesses such as Maas Designs, Teascarlet Fine Art, and Mane Street Hair Design aren't just shops; they’re community. 9B Family Foundations & Foundations School: Building Strong Foundations Faith-based education and family support in North Idaho

BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL WINTER 2024-2025
C
reating a strong foundation for education and family development, 9B Family Foundations and Foundations School are making a meaningful impact on North Idaho families. Led by Charli Turner, these innovative programs combine faith-based learning with tailored educational approaches, empowering students and their families to thrive. With a focus on community, character, and education, these schools provide an environment where growth and support go hand in hand. 9B Family Foundations, established in 2022, serves as a Christian preschool and a vital family resource center. “We offer a Bible preschool from 9am -12pm each day with an afternoon childcare option,” explains Turner. The resource center offers parenting classes, family coaching, and guidance for families in need. Meanwhile, Foundations School—a Bible-based, trade-focused K-12 program— has grown into a unique educational hub in Naples, Idaho. “Foundations School is unique in our ability to meet each individual student where they are and create a learning program for just them,” Turner shares.
Operating with shared core values, both schools are guided by four pillars: Faith Foundations, Educational Building Blocks, Character Development, and Strengthening Families and Communities. Turner highlights the synergy between the two programs: “Between the preschool and K-12 school, we have close to 100 students enrolled.” At 9B Family Foundations, the focus starts early, serving children from five weeks old through kindergarten. Each class is carefully designed to meet the developmental needs of specific age groups, fostering curiosity and creativity. “The lessons are created each week with an intentional approach to each age group with a unique set of songs, books, and creative and physical activities to engage little minds,” Turner explains. Foundations School offers an equally dynamic experience for K-12 students, combining traditional academic subjects with hands-on trade skills. Weekly Skills Days expose students to various trades and jobs in the local area, preparing them for real-world opportunities. “We are raising expectations in a culture that has been lowering the bar for too long,” Turner states. The curriculum also emphasizes ethics, financial literacy, and history, incorporating resources like Dave Ramsey’s Smart Dollar and Financial Peace University, Mike Rowe’s Work Ethics, and Mystery of History. Each day begins with a meaningful ritual, including the ringing of a bell, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Foundations School Pledge: “We pledge to serve God first in everything that we do, be a friend to people, and live a life worthy of our calling.” Both schools strongly emphasize family and community involvement. From seasonal events like the Fall Festival Carnival to acts of kindness such as food drives and the Angel Tree gift program, students learn the importance of service and connection. “Our students and their families participate in many community involvement activities throughout the year,” Turner shares. For Foundations School, partnerships with local businesses and tradespeople have been instrumental. “Over 60 tradesmen and businesses have partnered with us to offer our Skills Day classes, field trips, and even apprenticeships,” Turner says. The community's support has allowed the school to thrive, providing everything from books to furniture, child care, and teacher resources. Looking ahead, Turner and her team have ambitious plans. In the next five years, they aim to build a shared facility for both schools, including a full-sized gymnasium that can also serve as a community center. “We are prayerful and excited to watch this dream grow,” Turner shares. Families seeking a personalized, faith-based education with a strong sense of community will find 9B Family Foundations and Foundations School valuable resources. “We are certain that if we keep God in our foundations, we will be successful,” Turner reflects. 9BFamilyFoundations.com 9B Family Foundations 7142 2nd St. Bonners Ferry 208.610.6507 Foundations School 138 Latigo Ln. Relief from Chronic Pain: A NEW OPTION FOR BOUNDARY COUNTY RESIDENTS Now available at Boundary Community Hospital by DANIELLE LARSSON, Boundary Community Hospital
P
ain is an unwelcome part of life, but it serves important functions like alerting us to potential harm and signaling underlying issues. However, when pain lingers for 12 weeks or longer, it becomes a chronic condition that disrupts daily life. Chronic pain can range from a dull ache to a sharp, stabbing sensation and often interferes with sleep, work, and social activities. If you’ve been experiencing pain for three months or more, it’s time to explore effective management strategies. Recognizing and Addressing Chronic Pain Chronic pain persists even after the initial cause, such as an injury or illness, has healed. While this condition can affect every aspect of life, relief is possible. Non-medical methods, like regular exercise and a healthy diet, can improve mobility and reduce inflammation, offering some relief. For more persistent cases, medical treatments, such as medications, physical therapy, or minimally invasive procedures like nerve blocks or corticosteroid injections, can target the source of pain and provide lasting relief. Personalized Care with HPM Boundary Community Hospital (BCH) is proud to introduce Holistic Pain Management (HPM) to its services, offering advanced care to residents of Boundary County and the surrounding areas. Starting November 26, HPM

Utilizing the latest advancements in medical technology, HPM develops personalized treatment plans to help patients regain control of their lives. What to Expect During your visit, HPM specialists will assess your pain, medical history, and its impact on your daily activities to create a customized approach. Common treatments include physical therapy, advanced injections, and other non-surgical techniques aimed at reducing pain and improving mobility. If chronic pain affects your quality of life, HPM is here to help. Visit the BCH website at BoundaryCommunityHospital.org/painrelief to find out more and start your journey toward relief. With HPM, advanced pain management is now available right in your community, providing relief close to home.

Butternut Squash Bisque Ingredients:
1 medium butternut squash (about 3 lbs), peeled, seeded, and cubed 2 tbsp. olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 cups vegetable broth 1 cup coconut milk (or heavy cream for a richer taste) 1 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon Salt and pepper to taste Fresh thyme for garnish (optional)
Method:
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Toss the butternut squash cubes with 1 tbsp olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread them on a baking sheet and roast for 25-30 minutes until tender and lightly caramelized. 2. In a large pot, heat the remaining olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, cooking until soft and fragrant, about 5 minutes. 3. Add the roasted butternut squash to the pot along with the vegetable broth, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
4. Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth. Alternatively, carefully transfer the mixture to a blender and puree in batches. 5. Stir in the coconut milk or cream, and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste. 6. Ladle the bisque into bowls and garnish with fresh thyme, if desired.

Pioneer Lodge Venue:
Celebrating Milestones A scenic space for weddings and gatherings
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
U
nder Wally Amoth's ownership, Pioneer Lodge Venue in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, has transformed into a go-to destination for events of all kinds. His vision for the scenic property has created an adaptable space for weddings, reunions, retreats, and more. Located at 1258 Pioneer Road, the lodge combines natural beauty, thoughtful services, and warm hospitality to create a memorable experience for its guests. Wally’s journey to owning the venue was guided by opportunity and connection. “I always had an eye out for something like this that I could take over,” he explained. “When the previous owners decided to sell, they offered it to us since we have been family friends for a while.” This personal relationship with the former owners became the foundation for his vision of building a communityfriendly venue. With his goal clearly defined, Wally aims to make Pioneer Lodge a place for people to celebrate life’s milestones and enjoy meaningful gatherings. “To create a beautiful place
56 56 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL WINTER 2024-2025
for people to come and celebrate,” he said, summing up his goal. His vision extends beyond weddings; he hopes the lodge will be recognized as a space for all events. “It’s not just for weddings, but for any event you may need to plan.” Pioneer Lodge accommodates a variety of occasions with its flexible offerings. Weddings remain a central focus, with weekday, weekend, and full-weekend packages available to meet every couple's needs. Each package includes the use of the house for getting ready, the barn for the ceremony or reception, and the garage for additional preparation. “We work hard to accommodate every couple who reaches out to us,” Amoth said, emphasizing his commitment to customer satisfaction. Beyond weddings, the lodge is an excellent venue for holiday parties, Christmas celebrations, family reunions, dinner gatherings, and retreats. In the off-season, it’s turned into a cozy Airbnb rental, where visitors can enjoy the peaceful location. What sets the lodge apart is its thoughtful service. The onsite house, featuring four bedrooms and two bathrooms, provides a convenient space for the wedding party to prepare and stay. Additionally, the barn includes a bunkhouse above, offering a comfortable retreat for the groom and groomsmen. These features make hosting events at Pioneer Lodge easy and enjoyable for everyone. The property’s natural beauty, combined with its rustic charm, is its most memorable feature. Mission Creek winds through the grounds, creating an ideal setting for outdoor ceremonies. “There is a beautiful grassy meadow next to the creek where a bride could easily set up her wedding,” Amoth noted, highlighting the venue’s appeal. The lodge overlooks the Kootenai Valley and surrounding mountains, providing panoramic views that enhance the event experience, living up to its reputation as a picturesque venue. Looking ahead, Pioneer Lodge is set to grow and improve. “We plan on adding bathrooms to the barn to accommodate guests better and building a pavilion in the meadow by the creek for weddings and family reunions,” he shares. These enhancements will further elevate the lodge’s offerings. Pioneer Lodge Venue reflects Wally Amoth’s vision of creating a welcoming space for celebrating life’s special moments. Whether you’re having a wedding, reunion, or company meeting, this venue offers local-style service, beautiful natural amenities, and a range of packages to accommodate any size occasion. Pioneer Lodge continues to grow as a go-to destination for celebrations in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
