Shopping Locally FRESHER, SAFER, BUILDS COMMUNITY
W
In the last 10 years Americans have seen a boom in local food markets and for good reason. While Americans continue to buy more fast food, they still expect perfect ingredients and they are finding them. So why are they turning to their local markets more and more? In a nutshell they want fresh, healthy produce with great flavor. There are numerous other benefits to buying local products and it would seem Americans are now rediscovering what their local growers have to offer. FRESHER Locally grown items are usually harvested 1 or 2 days before hitting the market making them significantly fresher then traditional store bought ingredients. Given that produce loses nutrients quickly, a recently harvested crop is preferred for its ripeness alone. SAFER Even when it’s not organically grown, small farms tend to be less aggressive than large factory farms about using chemicals. For those consumers opposed to using genetically altered produce, locally grown produce will offer the best product. BUILDS COMMUNITY When you go to a local market you get a chance to see the grower and talk to them eye-to-eye. This opportunity to meet the growers in person goes a long way in creating a sense of community and maintaining tradition in addition to supporting local growers financially. By continuing to support local growers today, you are ensuring that they will be around tomorrow. In fact more and more non-chain grocers are carrying locally grown products. They must, it’s what consumers are demanding. Try buying local flavors. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain.

eurofeedback (NFB), also called neurotherapy or EEG biofeedback, is an alternative therapy for adults and children dealing with any of a wide range of physical, emotional, and mental challenges, including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, panic attacks, relationship issues, addictions, fibromyalgia, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). NFB is non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical, and has a lengthy track record of use by sports professionals, therapists, and even government agencies (NASA used it in the 1960s to train astronauts). In recent years, interest in and use of NFB has seen a resurgence due to medical discoveries regarding brain plasticity. Research is now showing that the brain can be trained to rewire itself for sharper mental acuity, more efficient performance, and better overall health. NFB offers a way to achieve this rewiring, or brainwave training, with almost no effort on the part of the trainee. Whether the result of diagnosed disorders or injuries, cognitive deterioration due to aging (including menopause), or simply the outcome of poor sleep patterns, performance anxiety, and job stress, NFB has been clinically proven to provide relief from symptoms. Most subjects (95%) achieve benefits that restore wellness and quality of life, often very quickly, without aid of drugs, surgery, or continuous medical care. Veterans and their families in particular can benefit from NFB treatment. PTSD takes a toll, not only on the returning vet, but also on his or her family. Symptoms such as nightmares, irritability, impatience, anxiety, panic attacks, hypervigilance, and alcohol/drug abuse all conspire to undermine the veteran’s ability to reintegrate into life at home. These
symptoms can quickly cause problems on a number of fronts, from family interactions and work performance to impulse control and ability to function effectively in society. Needless to say, the results can be devastating. Neurofeedback can dramatically reduce these symptoms, often within five, one-hour sessions (though 15-20 sessions are recommended to receive the full benefits of NFB in cases of PTSD). Even young, fit individuals can use NFB to improve performance. Numerous Olympic and professional athletes, from skiers to soccer players, use NFB to prepare for competition. Neurofeedback’s ability to help athletes improve their focus allows them to get and stay “in the zone.” In fact, members of the four-time World Cup-winning Italian soccer team called neurofeedback their “secret weapon”! For more information visit changeyourmind.biz or call Kim Birkhimer at 208.610.3183.

Boundary County Backpacks LOCALS START AN AMAZING PROGRAM THAT FEEDS NAPLE’S CHILDREN
M
ost say they love living in Bonners Ferry because its a caring community. When someone is need, the community comes together and fills the needs. Recently a group has come together to help fight hunger for the Naples school children. The “Boundary County Backpack Program”, provides Naples school children with backpacks full of food to go home with after school on Thursday for the weekend. In Boundary County there are three day weekends which can be a challenge for families. The cost of the kits are $6.09 per weekend pack, per student. The program is funded by citizens of Bonners Ferry, organizations and a grant from the Equinox Foundation. On Wednesdays, Anne Mae Spalding and Barbara Binall stuff the thirty one backpacks, which Merle Dinning then delivers and distributes to Naples School on Thursdays. Shirley Anderson meets the Second Harvest truck in Sagle and they transport the food to the Trinity Lutheran Church. The families with children who qualify for free or reduced breakfast and lunch programs are invited to apply for the community sponsored weekend program.
The financial needs have been met for this years program providing thirty-one backpacks per week through the school year. The group is working now to raise funds for the next school year, hopefully expanding to other schools. A community wide group of volunteers from Trinity Lutheran Church serves as Bo-Co Back Pack fiscal sponsor. If you are interested in contributing to the children, donations may be made to Bo-Co Back Packs, Trinity Lutheran 6784 Cody Street, Bonners Ferry, Idaho 83805. Bo-Co meets for a short meeting the third Thursday of each month at Trinity Lutheran at 6pm. Everyone is welcome. For more information call Shirley Anderson at 208.267.3068. Information by Shirley Anderson and Gini Woodward
Naples School was chosen for the first year pilot program because 76% of the students qualify for the school food programs. Second Harvest, a partner of “Feeding America” reports that “kids growing up in families where food is in short supply are at increased risk for behavioral problems, learning disabilities and other physical and cognitive impairments.”

HEALTHY LIVING
How Fatherhood Contributes to Fitness FATHERHOOD CREATES POSITIVE CHANGES TO MALE HEALTH
W
hen speaking about fitness and healthy living, most men usually think of the stereotyped image of a guy eating a balanced diet, going to the gym regularly and engaging into sports activities. All right, if you want to be different, you’ll probably choose yoga, ballroom dancing, carpentry or even pottery as your means to exercise, relieve stress and fight boredom. But you’ll probably do a lot of sneaking when you want to do some unique stuff. Yet the truth is that male health is not only limited to diet or doing exercises or sports. For, there are other aspects of a man’s life that directly or indirectly influence his health. No wonder fitness and healthy living is a must for every man. If you’re a father, you may be wondering how that role affects your over all fitness and healthy living. Of course, expecting and having your first-born child is a mixture of excitement, happiness and worry. Yet as the number of your kids increase and you start to face the tough challenges of parenting, you’ll probably give a more serious thought on your role as a dad. You’ll have to quickly master multitasking as you change diapers, feed your kids, watch them as they run around the house or reprimand them when they get excessively naughty. Is fatherhood doing good or bad things to men’s health?
happiness and fulfillment. The responsibility of being a father always changes the lifestyle of men. They no longer work nor live for their wife, but for their entire family. In this case, they may start to drop unhealthy practices such as smoking and drinking in order to set a good example for their kids. Moreover, their desire to watch and be with their children as they grow will inspire them to maintain their health and live longer. Hence, they’ll find more reasons to eat healthy foods, exercise regularly, drive carefully and visit their physician regularly. Of course, the joy of men is even doubled or tripled when they start to have grandchildren. Things keep on getting better as their family grows. It goes without saying that fitness and healthy living is still maintained when a man becomes a father.
Generally, fatherhood creates positive changes to the entire male health. This is true compared to men who aren’t married or who don’t have kids yet. Of course, this does not mean that single men aren’t as equally healthy as married men. However, being a father gives you a certain edge in terms of fitness and healthy living. In fact, fathers who spend quality time with their kids are more likely to experience greater

Cruise Ship Vacations for Seniors EXPERIENCE THE FUN AND EXCITEMENT ABOARD A CRUISE SHIP
I
n many areas of the world, including the United States, we often view senior citizens as having limits. While health issues may plague some senior citizens, most individuals are healthy and happy. In fact, many consider their senior years to be the prime of their live. If you are one of those individuals, you could experience fun and excitement aboard a cruise ship. One of the most common concerns aboard a cruise is safety. Many senior citizens and their family members are concerned with the health risks of taking a cruise. If you or your family has fears associated with extended cruises, you may want to seek guidance from your family physician. With a simple visit, your physician may easily be able to determine whether or not you are up for the voyage. If and when you receive the okay from your doctor, you can begin to further examine vacationing aboard a cruise ship. When examining cruise ships, you are encouraged to examine a number of cruise lines and each of the ships that they have available. To get started on your search, it is advised that you examine Royal Caribbean Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Lines and Princess Cruises. The foresaid cruise lines are just a few of the many that service travelers; however, they are often considered the most popular. When examining a particular cruise ship, you are encouraged to search for activities and services that you are attracted to. These services are important because they are often the only way for seniors to find the perfect cruise ship. At the current time, there is not a large, well-known cruise ship company
that offers cruises specifically for senior citizens. That does not mean that you shouldn’t take a cruise. It does; however, mean that you may need to spend more time researching your available options. You can and should search for cruise ship activities based on your own preferences. Many seniors prefer cruise ships that offer elegant dinning facilities and activities geared towards mature crowds. If safety is a concern, you may wish to vacation aboard a family fun cruise. These cruises are geared towards individuals and families of all ages. Many times, a family fun cruise has a more appropriate environment. Seniors, including yourself, may find this environment warm and welcoming. Once you have made the decision to take a cruise ship vacation, you may be excited to book your reservations. Senior citizens are urged to refrain from purchasing tickets and making travel accommodations on a whim. This is because many seniors qualify for cruise ship and other travel discounts. Many of these discounts are offered by AARP, Triple A and other membership clubs. Even if you may not qualify for travel deals and discounts, you should still see if they exist. Until you look, you never know if you can book a cruise at a discounted price. Cruise ship travel is a fun, exciting and rewarding experience, no matter what your age. With a large number of discounts, it is quite possible that you can all enjoy a vacation aboard a cruise ship, without having to go broke.

ACTIVITIES AND FUN
FRUIT THIEVES A fruit farmer hired two new workers for his fields, but before he sent them out for the day’s work, he told them he had just one rule: don’t steal any fruit. The two agreed to obey the rule. After the day was over, the two workers came in to report to the farmer. He asked them if they had stolen any fruit, and immediately their conscience forced them to tell the truth.
farmer promptly told him that as part of his punishment, he would have to stuff each cherry up his nose. The thief was upset about this, but he knew he had done wrong, so he slowly began to push the cherries up his nose one by one. As he was working on the third cherry, he began to laugh hysterically. The farmer asked him, “What’s so funny?” The thief replied, “The other guy is out there picking watermelons!”
“Yes, we did. We ate some when we got hungry,” they said.
JUST LOOKING AROUND
The farmer replied, “Okay, here is your punishment. I want each of you to go pick ten of your favorite fruit and come back to me.”
A blind man walks into a store with his seeing eye dog.
The men couldn’t believe their ears. This seemed more like a reward than a punishment! After fifteen minutes, the first thief came back with ten cherries. The
All of a sudden, he picks up the leash and begins swinging the dog over his head. The manager runs up to the man and asks, “What are you doing?!” The blind man replies, “Just looking around.”
