LIGHT LIGHT Gather Around the
Creating an outdoor oasis around the fire pit
Warm summer weather provides the perfect opportunity to transform your backyard into an oasis that brings your daily life outdoors. Your backyard should be an extension of your home, adding usable square footage that welcomes family and friends. If you’ve ever been transfixed while watching a fire’s dancing flames, you know that a fire pit creates an unrivaled ambiance. It enlivens an outdoor space while providing warmth, the ability to cook, and radiating a feeling of summer nostalgia.
Fire pits have a calming effect; the heat and warm glow helps us relax and brings people together to share stories, late-night conversations, and of course, roast s’mores. Creating the perfect oasis around your fire pit will depend on your space, style, and the type of fire pit you choose.
How you design the area around your fire pit will depend on which type of fire pit is right for your lifestyle and yard. Whether you’re building a traditional wood-burning fire pit yourself or looking for a portable option with a propane tank that you can take camping, each has pros and cons that you need to weigh.
Wood-burning fire pits replicate traditional campfires. Made from various materials and available as both permanent and portable options, they provide warmth, the crackling sound of wood, and the ability to cook over
by ALLISON POLLOCK-PUGHits fire. Built-in fire pits are customizable and can be constructed with stone or brick over a weekend, whereas store-bought fire pits may carry a high price tag but come in various sizes—some of which allow for portability. Wood-burning fire pits also produce varying amounts of smoke that can irritate your eyes, nose and throat, the smell of which can also attach to fabrics.
Non-wood-burning fire pits have become more popular for their convenience in the backyard and more contemporary designs. Propane options are easily turned on and off without the messy ashes but don’t produce the warmth of a wood-burning fire and require an attached propane tank that needs regular refills. Gel fuel fire pits don’t emit smoke and cost less initially but require refueling every couple of hours. Natural gas fire pits connect to your home’s gas line. Its convenient supply and easy maintenance make it popular among homeowners, but it’s not ideal for cooking, isn’t portable, and is often costly to install.
Whether you envision relaxing backyard evenings with s’mores under the stars or plan to fill the space with friends and family ready to battle for this year’s croquet championship, seating sets the tone. If there are not enough

you choose.
seats, people won’t linger. If there’s not enough heat, people might head inside. Luckily, when it comes to sitting around a fire pit, there’s no shortage of creative options.
Safety is the top priority when planning your fire pit area—the seats must be a safe distance from the fire. Most experts recommend three to four feet between seating and the outermost edge of the fire pit. This ensures you are close enough to feel the heat yet not so close as to cause a safety hazard.
Next, you’ll want to consider style and space. Once you’ve decided on the type of fire pit that will work the best for your needs, look at the aesthetics of your home and backyard. Do you want a rustic vibe or a sleek, modern ambiance? How comfortable do you want the seats to be? Sitting on a wooden log bench is great for camping but can get uncomfortable quickly.
Adirondack chairs are the most traditional choice for fire-pit seating. They are comfortable, sit low to the ground, and have wide armrests providing a spot to set drinks and plates. Adirondack chairs come in a myriad of colors and weather-resistant materials. Depending on which kind you select, they can carry a steep price tag at several hundred dollars per chair, but the ease of simply hosing them off makes them a popular choice.
If you have an abundance of space, built-in hardscape circular benches of stone or brick pair beautifully around a fire pit. The curved shape fits perfectly around a circular fire-pit design, and the stone or concrete is fire-resistant. Depending on the material and installation method, this option can vary in price but will last for decades. Include outdoor throw pillows or a bench seat cushion for added comfort.
Creating the perfect oasis
your fire pit will depend on your space, style, and the type of fire pit
Transform your backyard into an oasis that brings your daily life outdoors.
Sectional sofas and outdoor furniture are designed for comfort with thick, deep cushions that offer a luxurious space where you might want to take a quick nap. Often made of teak or outdoor wicker, they sit low to the ground so you can enjoy the warmth from the fire. The type of fire pit you selected is important when choosing outdoor furniture with fabric cushions. The smoke smell from a wood-burning fire can penetrate fabric, causing the smoky odor to linger. Additionally, due to rain and snow in the Inland Northwest, store cushions indoors during winter or replace them each year. The cost of outdoor furniture varies widely, so shop around for one in your price range.
Whichever type of fire pit you choose or style of seating and ambiance you set, the joy of spending time outdoors by the fire pit creates lasting memories. Whether wine tasting with friends or hosting a neighborhood outdoor movie night, s’mores roasted over the fire taste just as good on a plush lounge chair as on an old folding patio chair.

Maximizing the bounty of fresh produce
by PATRICE ALLENHaving an abundant harvest from your garden is a rewarding experience, but it can also leave you with a surplus of fresh produce. Instead of letting your hard work go to waste, why not find creative ways to utilize this overabundance? From preserving the flavors of summer to sharing with friends and neighbors, there are countless ways to make the most of your garden’s bounty. Read on to explore six exciting and practical ways to put that excess produce to good use. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner, these ideas will inspire you to make the most of every juicy tomato, crisp cucumber and vibrant zucchini that graces your garden.
Preserving the Harvest: 01 02
Embrace the abundance of your garden by exploring various preservation techniques for your surplus produce. Canning, pickling, and creating delicious sauces and jams not only extend the lifespan of your homegrown treasures but also capture the essence of summer flavors to be enjoyed throughout the year. Whether you’re creating jars of vibrant salsa or preserving the tangy sweetness of fresh berries, these preservation methods lock in the freshness and allow you to savor the taste of your garden’s harvest long after the growing season has passed.
Sharing with Others:
Foster a sense of community and spread the goodness of your garden by sharing your surplus produce with friends and neighbors or local food banks. Not only does this generous act reduce food waste, but it also brings joy and nourishment to those who may not have access to fresh, homegrown fruits and vegetables. Whether you organize a neighborhood swap, donate to a community organization, or simply share a basket of goodies with a neighbor, the act of sharing your garden’s abundance strengthens connections and cultivates a spirit of giving.
Freezing for Future Delights:
Extend the enjoyment of your garden’s bounty by freezing excess fruits and vegetables. Whether you blanch them before freezing or opt for flash freezing, this preservation method retains the flavors and nutrients of your produce, allowing you to enjoy a taste of summer even in the midst of winter. From frozen berries for smoothies and pies to frozen herbs for seasoning, having a freezer stocked with your garden’s goodness ensures that you have a convenient supply of fresh ingredients ready for culinary adventures year-round.
03 04
Exploring New Culinary Frontiers:
Unleash your creativity in the kitchen by experimenting with recipes that showcase the flavors and textures of your garden produce. Take inspiration from the vibrant colors of your homegrown vegetables and fruits and dive into the world of culinary delights. Whip up refreshing salads bursting with flavor, create homemade salsas and chutneys to elevate your meals, or infuse your dishes with the aromatic herbs from your garden. The possibilities are endless, and your surplus produce provides the perfect canvas for culinary exploration and the creation of delicious masterpieces.
Juicing and Refreshing Beverages: 05 06
Quench your thirst and revitalize your body with homemade juices and refreshing beverages crafted from your garden fruits and vegetables. Extract the vibrant flavors, vitamins and nutrients by blending an assortment of your homegrown treasures. Create invigorating combinations like watermelon and mint, cucumber and lemon or a medley of berries for a burst of natural goodness. Sip on these refreshing elixirs on a hot summer day or as a healthy alternative to store-bought beverages, and relish the satisfaction of enjoying the fruits of your labor in a revitalizing form.
Sustainable
Composting:
Embrace the concept of “closing the loop” in your garden by composting your excess produce. Instead of letting valuable organic matter go to waste, transform it into nutrient-rich compost to feed your soil. Composting not only reduces your carbon footprint and minimizes food waste but also enhances the health and fertility of your garden beds. It replenishes essential nutrients, improves soil structure and supports beneficial microbial activity. By harnessing the power of composting, you create a sustainable system where your surplus produce nourishes the earth, completing the natural cycle and fostering a thriving garden ecosystem.
‘The Perfect’
LOCATION
Kootenai County Farmers MarketS’ Wednesday market has been welcomed with open arms at its new home— in Riverstone
by JILLIAN CHANDLERAfter 17 years setting up their seasonal farmers market on Fifth Street between Lakeside Avenue and Front Street in downtown Coeur d’Alene, the Kootenai County Farmers Markets’ (KCFM) Wednesday market—proudly a producer-only market—is settling in nicely to its new home. After months of researching the perfect place to host their Wednesday market in which they could remain a producer-only market, they said yes to an incredible location accessible via biking, walking and bus, with access to power, water and bathrooms, and lots of free parking.
“Cheryl Klein from Riverstone has been amazing to work alongside with. We made calls and site visits to over 20 locations throughout Kootenai County. We wanted to offer the Board as many viable options as we could. It was a large list of options but ultimately, at the end, Riverstone was the location that was ideally situated that met our needs—and it really has,” says Natalie Selbe, KCFM market manager.
“Working with their team was just a dream and so easy to work with. They wanted us, and that was our first and most important deciding factor. There were many locations that wanted us, but this marked all the checkboxes on the request list, plus it is just 3 miles from our prior location. We wanted to make sure our customers who walked and biked to us downtown still had that opportunity.”
Another noticeable perk for those driving to the market is all of the free parking Riverstone provides, plus the two-story parking structure behind Main Street. Then there is the benefit of the beautiful, clean, heated bathrooms, “a 1,000 percent improvement from the port-a-potties we had in the past,” Natalie laughs. The market made its 2023 season debut on May 17, and as Natalie smiles, “We couldn’t have found the more perfect location. It was the largest Wednesday attendance in the history of the market in both customers and vendors; beyond our wildest dreams.” Room for growth was high on the list when searching for the ideal spot for the market, as Natalie shares that they have had so many new vendor requests, she foresees the size of the Wednesday market doubling in size in the coming future.
“We couldn’t have found the more perfect location. It was the largest Wednesday attendance in the history of the market in both customers and vendors; beyond our wildest dreams.”
The Wednesday market currently has 80 vendors, whereas the Saturday market in Hayden has 120. “I would expect Wednesday’s market to match that 120 vendors sometime during the 2023 season,” she adds.
Visitors to the market will be treated to an incredible variety of vendors showcasing their amazing products— grown from the ground or handcrafted; every single item sold at Kootenai County Farmers Markets is made/grown by the person selling it to you. “You have a question about the product? The person standing in front of you at the market can tell you everything about it. That is so unique and rare,” notes Natalie.
Fresh fruits and veggies that are grown in season, honey, meat (beef, pork, bison, chicken, eggs), jewelry, sewn items, wood-turned art, tinctures/medicinal products,
dog-related products, and delicious baked goods, in addition to an amazing food court, and more, can be found at the Wednesday market.
“We want visitors to leave our market knowing every vendor who sold them their item or served them their yummy food was the one who created it. We are a producer market. That is our foundation. Those are our bi-laws that we weren’t willing to change [in order to continue the market downtown]. We are proud of our producer market.”
Natalie also reminds the community and visitors alike that their purchase from these vendors directly impacts these vendors’ lives. “These vendors have dirt under their nails, they barely sleep, they live/breathe their creations— and this is their livelihood. We don’t take it lightly when a
customer buys a product. It feeds that vendor. This is farmto-table. There isn’t a huge markup of profit. This market is providing the community with healthy, nutritious products or crafts that someone has made by their hand.”
To add to the wonderful market experience, each week, live entertainment from favorite area musicians fills the air during the entirety of the market. To check out who will be performing each week (at both the Wednesday and Saturday markets), be sure to check out the season lineup online at KootenaiFarmersMarkets.org/calendars/music-calendar.
Kootenai County Farmers Markets’ Wednesday market is held 4 to 7pm every Wednesday now through September 27, while the Saturday market in Hayden (at the corner of Prairie Avenue and Highway 95) takes place 9am to 1:30pm each Saturday through October 21.
“KCFM was founded in 1986 and [has] a strong hold in the community,” reminds Natalie. “We are grateful for those who come each week. Farmers markets are essential, and we are proud to be a local producer-only market.”
For those who would like to learn more about the Kootenai County Farmers Market, or for those interested in becoming a vendor, visit KootenaiFarmersMarkets.org. For the most up-to-date news, be sure to “like” and “follow” KCFM at Facebook.com/KootenaiCountyFarmersMarket.

Teacher in the Spotlight
KELLY OSLER
Special Education | Dalton Elementary School
by TAYLOR SHILLAM“Ilove helping students reach their fullest potential and feel confident about their strengths,” says Kelly Osler, K-5 Special Education teacher at Dalton Elementary School. “As a Special Education teacher, I’m passionate about helping kids understand that their disability doesn’t define them and to embrace the things that make them unique.”
Dalton Principal Jody Hiltenbrand says Kelly is the epitome of the champion every child deserves, investing her whole heart into the social, emotional and academic growth of her students.
“She deals with a myriad of challenging situations, from informing parents their child has a disability, to accepting parents who decline to test their child for services, and everything in between—and she does it all with grace,” Jody describes. “She has grit and patience, humor and warmth, toughness and professionalism. Over the past five years, it has been wonderful to watch her grow in courage, expertise and confidence.”
Kelly says her 12 years of teaching have been full of amazing moments. “I love being able to teach my students for up to six years,” she says. “It gives me the opportunity to see an exponential amount of growth from tiny 5-year-old kindergarteners to 11-year-old fifthgrade graduates.”
Kelly and her students often become quite close
after six years together. “It’s always so hard to watch them move on to middle school, but it feels wonderful knowing I helped prepare them for the next step in their journey,” she says. “I always say that I feel like a mama bird, pushing my little babies out of the nest and watching them fly away!”
Kelly says the general public may be surprised to know just how much teachers care about each and every one of their students on a deep level. “We try to be a consistent, positive, joyful presence in their lives every day,” she says. “The number of tears I’ve shed and sleepless nights I’ve had over particular students over the years are too numerous to count.”
In her classroom, she has a picture of a field filled with yellow tulips. In the center is a yellow tulip with one red petal. “I tell all of my students they are like that red and yellow tulip,” she says. “They all have something about them that makes them completely special and unique. That ‘red petal’ is what makes them unlike anyone else.”
Kelly teaches her students to share their red petal with the world, and to be kind to others when discovering their red petal.
“These students are so much more than just a ‘job’ for teachers,” Kelly says. “It is never lost on us the tremendous responsibility and privilege we have by being such a huge part of their young lives.”
“IT IS NEVER LOST ON US THE TREMENDOUS RESPONSIBILITY AND PRIVILEGE WE HAVE BY BEING SUCH A HUGE PART OF THEIR YOUNG LIVES.”

also did summer track and indoor track with G3 athletics.”
From her experience as a track athlete for CHS, she learned how firsthand hard work can pay off. “I have also learned how to work well with others, even those I don’t particularly enjoy being around.”
At 18, Kytriana (Ky) Burrell, who graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in June, is a two-time district champion and three-time state qualifier in track and field.
While Ky didn’t immediately begin her high athletic career as a track athlete, she ended it on a high note, after winning multiple regional titles in the 100-meter dash, 200, and 4x100 relay.
“I think my biggest challenge in sports was that I didn’t start doing track until my sophomore year, and I felt like I was much further behind everyone else who had been running for much longer,” she says. “To make up for the gap, I had to work twice as hard by lifting weights, doing extra practice, and completing a lot of rehab to ensure my body was feeling good.”
Ky is grateful to her parents for supporting her success. “I have to thank my parents for a large part of my success because they made sure I still did everything I needed to do, especially when I didn’t want to,” she says. “I
Her hard work certainly has paid off, through each successful season and competition, and now her path forward to continued success beyond high school.
“As of this year, I have podiumed at state four times,” she says. Ky plans to continue running track at the University of Texas at Arlington while studying to become an architectural engineer.
“I’m interested in architecture because I have always loved creating my own cool designs, as well as walking through homes and looking at their different designs,” she says. “I wanted to be able to do both: I want to design beautiful buildings and homes, then walk through them to see the final design.”
Ky loves the competitive aspect of her sport and will continue to pursue her goals in the next steps of her career. “I enjoy track because I like the aspect of competing with myself and the constant goal of trying to break my PRs,” she says. “I also really enjoy relays and having that community. Even if I don’t exactly work with them, I love that I have a team.”
THE SPOTLIGHT
“Iplayed football my whole life and was a two-time all-defensive back and a two-year starter,” says Brodie Beebe, who completed his senior year at Lake City High School in June. “In academics, I always kept a 3.5 GPA and above, all four years of high school.”
“Brodie has been a T-Wolf since he was born,” says Lake City principal Deanne Clifford. “Every Friday night, you would find him on the sidelines of the football games, just a little man dreaming of the day he would be on the field.” Ever since, Brodie has worked hard in the classroom, on the field, and in the student section of the basketball stands “as our number one fan,” she says.
This fall, Brodie will attend the University of Alabama. “I will not be playing any sports. I had to hang up the cleats after a good decade of playing the game I loved,” he says. “I decided to do this solely to accomplish everything I intend on doing. It came down to what would give me a better opportunity in life, and where can I get a better education. I think the other thing that came into place was listening to my
body. After 10 years of playing a contact sport, I’d realized it was time.”
Brodie’s career interests lie in the business world. “I’ve been around business my whole life, so I know how it moves inside and out. I really hope I can take from what I’ve learned and apply that knowledge,” he says. Brodie hopes to become an entrepreneur.
While Brodie won’t continue his sport in college, he’ll keep the experiences and lessons learned.
“By far, the biggest challenge I overcame was getting suspended in my junior year. I know I messed up, and I learned from that,” he says. “That’s the biggest thing about life: You learn and grow. No one is perfect, and it’s about how you respond to adversity, rather than hide from it.”
Brodie credits a former coach, Greg Peach, for instilling in him the importance of accountability and being reliable. “I’m taking those life lessons with me all the way through,” he says. “In football, your team has to rely on you. In the real world, your boss and coworkers rely on you, and your family relies on you.”
Contact was one of Brodie’s favorite aspects of football but also the lesson that not everything comes easy. “It’s a year-round sport, not just a fall sport,” he says. “It teaches you that you have to prepare for life, and not just go for it.”
Although Brodie is retiring his cleats, he will remain a Timberwolf. “Brodie is well-liked, kind, generous and humble,” Deanne says. “We are truly proud of him! Brodie epitomizes everything it means to be a Timberwolf. He loves Lake City High School with all his heart and represents the spirit of the Timberwolf.”
“THAT’S THE BIGGEST THING ABOUT LIFE: YOU LEARN AND GROW.”
ACRES OF FUN
The North Idaho State Fair returns this August
The Kootenai County Fairgrounds welcomes back the North Idaho State Fair this August, now a tradition more than 100 years old! Arriving August 18 through 27, the fair has transformed over the decades to become a 10-day family friendly event, encompassing entertainment, education and community. With “Acres of Fun” promised in 2023, the North Idaho State Fair continues to grow and provide something to look forward to for all ages in Kootenai County and beyond.
In addition to the iconic atmosphere, fair food and countless vendors to explore, the North Idaho State Fair is known to fill its schedule with unique events, exhibits and entertainment. Highlights include the carnival attractions, livestock programs, ground attractions and the Findlay Arena events.
“We are always excited to share our Findlay Arena Show lineup,” says Alexcia Jordan, general manager for the Kootenai County Fairgrounds. “This year, we will have Big Air at the Fair, Monster Trucks, Party in the Dirt Concert Series, our incredible PRCA Rodeo, the Gem State Stampede, and we end with a long-time favorite—the Demo Derby!”
The fair’s entertainment features are curated with guests of all ages in mind, from the concert series’ selected artists to multiple rodeo events and daily family friendly activities. This year’s Party in the Dirt Concert Series takes place August 21, 22 and 23 and includes GRAMMY® award-winning singer/songwriter Carly Pearce,
popular country artist Chase Rice and well-known hip hop artist and prominent pop culture figure Lil Jon.
“Overall, we have had a very positive response to the whole lineup,” Alexcia says of the concert series. “We work really hard to see that the fair truly offers something fun for the whole family. This year, I think our team really has put together an incredible event.”
The highly anticipated Gem State Stampede PRCA Rodeo and Demolition Derby events are known to sell out, so guests are advised to plan ahead and buy their tickets early. Alexcia also recommends visiting the fair on opening day to take in the Drone Show.
“If you didn’t get to see the Drone Show last year on opening day, I highly recommend coming out this year on opening night, August 18. As soon as it gets dark, look to the sky and you will see an incredible sight brought to us by Idaho Central Credit Union,” She says. While the Drone Show, illuminated by arena lights after sunset, can be seen from anywhere on the fairgrounds, the grandstands will have the best viewing point, and spectators will hear music the Drone Show is coordinated with.
Prior to the Drone Show is the Big Air at the Fair attraction, which involves X Gamers showing off their best tricks on dirt bikes, 4-wheelers and more.
A selection of grounds attractions is included for free with fair admission, including the popular Nascar RACING and Hang Bar by
THAT LAST A LIFETIME.”
Challenge, stunts by the Jetpack Flying Water Circus, activityfilled fun zones for the kids, and more. “We have so much to see, from thrill shows to educational shows and strolling acts around the grounds. “There is something for the whole family!” Alexcia says.
“Something not everyone knows about our local fair is it is not funded by tax dollars,” she adds. “We are fully self-sustaining, which is something our team is very proud of. We’re grateful to our sponsors and community that help us thrive!”
Another fair feature attendees don’t often know about is the free exhibits program, open to all residents of Idaho’s 10 northern counties.
Participants in the exhibits program “can compete for ribbons and prizes in all sorts of categories from canning, quilting, leather work, model building, and even Lego projects,” Alexcia shares. “We have hundreds of classes to participate in and divisions that everyone in the family can enter.”
Additional exhibit categories include culinary arts, home arts, and horticulture. Those interested in showcasing their talent in the fair’s exhibits program can register online now.
“Our team and Board work hard to bring the community together each year to preserve traditions and educate about agriculture,” Alexcia says, noting that the fair’s entertainment, food and shopping are only the beginning of the fun. “The North Idaho State Fair is unique, internationally award-winning, and dedicated to bringing families and friends together to make beautiful memories that last a lifetime.”
Tickets to the North Idaho State Fair and the Party in the Dirt concert series are available now. Plan your visit early and continue to check the fair website for the most up-to-date daily event schedules at NISFair.Fun.

55 YEARS OF ART ON THE GREEN
Experience the arts at Coeur d’Alene’s local art festival
by TAYLOR SHILLAMThis August marks 55 years of Art on the Green, the original Coeur d’Alene arts festival supporting artists, arts education and community projects. Art on the Green has taken to the grounds of North Idaho College (NIC) every summer for decades, in celebration of local art in all of its forms, including musical performances and handcrafted goods.
“There is something at Art on the Green for everyone. We have over 120 artist booths, which includes the 12 youth booths,” shared Diane Solomon, president of the Citizens’ Council of the Arts (CCA). “This festival is a great opportunity for friends, family and neighbors to gather and enjoy a great outdoor event!”
A nonprofit organization, CCA presents the volunteer-led Art on the Green each summer. All proceeds from the festival and food court are used to donate art supplies to local schools and provide three days of free entertainment for all ages.
“This year, we’re excited to present more kid-focused entertainment in the early parts of all three days on our South Stage,” Diane said. “The Sorensen Elementary drummers will open the festival on Friday, August 4, on the Main Stage and also present an interactive performance on the South Stage where kids can join in.”
That Saturday, the North Idaho Rock Band will perform and offer a workshop, followed by performances throughout the day by the Coeur d’Alene Music Conservatory. On Sunday, Highland Dancers will perform and present an interactive workshop where kids can participate and learn how to dance along with them.
“This year, for the first time, Citizens Council for the Arts has sponsored a Student Juried Art Show open to local high school students,” Diane said. “The accepted art will be on display adjacent to our long-running Juried Art Show.”
While Art on the Green takes place just three days a year, its preparation is a year-round affair.
“CCA volunteers work all year to plan this long-running art festival,” shared Diane. “We have a group of about 35 who do the majority of the planning. During the week of the festival, over 350 volunteers support all of the food, children’s art garden area, juried shows, our information booth, entertainment team, grounds crews, and the beer and wine garden.”
All profits from these offerings are used to support CCA community projects like offering grants to local art teachers for supplies, art for a local school each year (this year, Lakeland High School), and to support the festival for the next year.
“These types of events are great opportunities for local people to get out and experience all of the arts the surrounding area has to offer,” Diane said. “There will be all kinds of handmade art for sale. Most of our entertainment on two stages will be performed by local artists who many people in our community would not often have the opportunity to see or hear.”
Diane added that the CCA is excited to talk to all who might be interested in volunteering to become part of the Art on the Green Community and assist in presenting a great long-running community event in its 55th year. As the sponsor of Art on the Green, CCA will have a booth where anyone interested can visit to chat about joining the team.
Art on the Green will return to North Idaho College on August 4 through 6 to provide free family friendly entertainment. For more information, visit ArtontheGreenCdA.com.

An incredible experience awaits on the shores of Priest Lake
by JILLIAN CHANDLER“Sunrises, moon rises, rainbows, wildlife, beach fires, stargazing, lakeshore walks and time on the water are more common here than just about anywhere else.”
Situated among towering pines on the sandy shores of Reeder Bay on Priest Lake, Elkins Resort is surrounded by Forest Service land, making for incredible views. “Sunrises, moon rises, rainbows, wildlife, beach fires, stargazing, lakeshore walks and time on the water are more common here than just about anywhere else,” smiles Tracie Szybnski.
Elkins Resort on Priest Lake has been in continuous operation since being established in 1932. Owners Mike and Tracie Szybnski and Sharon Davis continue many of the traditions set out by the Elkins family. Guests are able to keep their reservations from year to year, which means familiar faces regularly walk through the door. Long-term friendships and even new families are formed along the way.
Open year-round, Elkins Resort is a full-service resort offering lodging, dining, restaurant, bar, boat rentals, moorage, store and gift shop. The owners and staff are able to offer their guests a very unique experience that combines excellent customer service, a beautiful setting, comfortable lodging and outstanding cuisine. “Our approach to business has created generational customers,” shares Tracie. “Both cabin and restaurant guests have been coming back for three to four generations.”
All 30 cabins have full kitchens and living areas, giving guests the ability to choose going out to eat or staying in. Most cabins have fireplaces with wood provided— which is something not available in most cities anymore, Tracie notes.
During your stay, you’ll be treated to several different dining experiences at Elkins Resort. The lodge holds a dining room open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the bar offering a more casual spot for lunch and dinner. During the summer months, outdoor dining is available on the front lawn. Chef Graham Byxbee has been showcasing his culinary talents at the resort for more than 15 years. “His constant research and innovations keep both the favorites and new items mouthwatering,” says Tracie.
Elkins is famous for their Pepper Steak, Herb-Encrusted Halibut, Huckleberry Daiquiris … and much more. Restaurant manager Cricket Hass is the master behind the bar, where she creates innovative—and delicious—cocktails incorporating local ingredients. Assistant restaurant manager Hailee DeSpain plays an important role in training the Elkins team to give friendly and professional service.
As you make your way outside to the shoreline, boat rentals are available right on the water (Memorial Day weekend through September). The rental fleet includes Harris pontoon boats, Cobalt runabouts, Whalers, fishing boats, canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. Tracie adds, “These are all self-driven, giving you the opportunity to explore 27,000-plus acres of water on Priest Lake and Upper Priest Lake.”
If you’re looking for that dream wedding location, look no further than Elkins Resort. Weddings are hosted September through June, and wedding packages include exclusive use of the lodge and front lawn for the ceremony and reception,
planning of the event, staff for the event, one night’s lodging for the wedding couple, and catering of the event. “Jennifer Bushman, our event coordinator and assistant general manager, works with each wedding party directly to ensure all the details are handled, creating a personal experience not many others can match,” Tracie adds.
Decade after decade, what has continued to set Elkins apart from other resorts in the area is consistency and service. “We aim to create the best experience possible,” Tracie says proudly. “Our friendly team goes out of their way to serve our customers. The year-round team, including head of maintenance Bill Bushman, keeps the resort put together.”
If you’re looking to make cherished memories in a beautiful setting along the shores of Priest Lake, Elkins Resort and its dedicated team is ready to treat you, your friends and family to an unforgettable experience.

Northwest Adventures: Which one is right for you?
by ALLISON POLLOCK-PUGHSummer is when the Northwest takes center stage and shines like the sun on the sea. There’s nothing quite like a summer day spent outdoors, enjoying the picturesque views of glistening rivers and lakes surrounded by evergreen trees, only falling into shadow when the sun sets behind the beautifully steadfast mountain ranges.
The warm summer weather creates an idyllic time for outdoor activities. Access to some of the greatest rivers in the country, hundreds of campsites, thousands of trails and lakes provide abundant opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.
Whether you’re ready for extreme whitewater rafting, planning a family camping trip, or outdoor wine tasting tours are more your thing, here are some outdoor adventures to try based on your interests and personality.
If you like an outdoor walk in nature
It may be the fresh air, the serenity, or the forced disconnect that comes with no cell service in the mountains, but hiking has a way of clearing your mind and making you feel calm and refreshed. Whether you’re traversing a steep grade to a panoramic mountain peak, overnight
backpacking through the Cascade or Rocky Mountain Ranges, or just taking a quiet walk in the forest, the benefits of hiking are as vast as the mountains themselves.
Hiking has many advantages and is even medically prescribed as “ecotherapy” for the mental health benefits it provides. It can improve your overall fitness and stamina while also offering options for any skill and ability level. Looking for an easy hike close to home? Or, maybe something more challenging that ends at a hot spring? In the Northwest, you don’t have to go far to find a beautiful spot to suit your needs. Plus, there are numerous websites that provide details and difficulty levels of hiking trails so you can be well-prepared before setting out on your adventure.
If your ideal outdoor experience includes charcuterie and tastings
One of the best parts of having so many wineries in the Northwest are the opportunities to enjoy the beautiful scenery that comes with vast sprawling vineyards. And, with all the amazing vineyards clustered together throughout the region, who says you can’t experience the outdoors while tasting some of the award-winning wines?
Valleys adorned with thousands of rows of grapevines surrounded by rolling hills, mountains and rivers provide panoramic views and a peaceful atmosphere not to be rivaled. Since they’re also a hotspot for travelers, there is often a wide variety of restaurants and outdoor activities nearby. Some ways to get more time in nature while exploring the vineyards are walking tours, bike rentals, or golf courses—there are even wineries where you can have a tasting with your feet in a river. Whether you prefer crisp whites, sparkling bubbly or bold reds, you’ll find plenty of outdoor experience while sipping your tasting flight at one of the region’s wineries.
If you’re a thrill-seeker looking for action
Have you ever wondered what life is like for the birds? Parasailing from a boat is a great family activity and gives an aerial view from 500 feet while paragliding lets the wind take you over water. Maybe being high up amongst the trees is more your style. The whole family can take in the view as you glide through the treetops while ziplining down a mountain.
Looking for adventure but want to stay out of the sky? Whitewater rafting is an experience the whole family can enjoy, with each river providing a different current and challenge. If you want an endurance-filled activity, the forests, deserts and backcountry trails make the Northwest one of the country’s best locations for mountain biking. Whichever activity you choose, just make sure you find a reputable guide before heading out.
If you’re a water-lover (don’t forget your life vest!)
There is simply nothing better than a summer day on the water in the Northwest, which makes it one of the top water sport destinations in the US. Whether you want to kayak on the sound searching for seals, go fly fishing for trout in the Snake River, or load up your kids and floaties for a day at the beach, the opportunities to spend a day (or week) on the water are endless.
Boating is a great way to get on the water, and there’s nothing quite like the feeling of gliding across the water on water skis, a wakeboard or innertube. But, being

beautiful adventure.
If you find the idea of living off the grid appealing
Camping is one of the most common outdoor activities in the world, and for good reason. Disconnecting from everyday stressors while being engulfed in nature and sleeping underneath the stars is revitalizing— allowing you to slow down, focus on relationships and learn valuable life skills.
Camping is also very flexible, so depending on whether you’ll be truly roughing it or are looking for more of a Troop Beverly Hills experience, there are options for you to choose what works best for you and your
you spend your camping days and nights. Just remember that many campgrounds require reservations, and some book up quickly!
The Northwest’s proximity to water, mountains and desert make it one of the most appealing places to spend the summer. While some activities require training or expensive equipment (boats/RVs), spending time outdoors doesn’t have to be expensive or extravagant—there’s a reason country songs have been written about simply floating a river.
Lifelong memories are made during the little moments of togetherness. So, load up the life vests, water toys, sunscreen and snacks, and wherever you’re headed, you’ll be set for a great adventure.

Exploring the benefits of cycling for your body, mind, and summer adventures
by THOMAS WILLIAMSSummer is a time for fun, sun and relaxation, but for parents, it can also be a stressful time trying to keep kids entertained and engaged while school is out. Prepping for summer activities ahead of time can help alleviate some of that stress and ensure that your kids have a summer filled with fun and meaningful experiences.
As the sun shines brighter and the temperature rises, the allure of summer beckons us to step outside and embrace the great outdoors. And what better way to seize the season than by hopping on a bicycle and pedaling through the warm summer breeze?
Whether you choose the adventure of exploring scenic trails or the convenience of stationary cycling in the comfort of your home or gym, bike riding offers a multitude of benefits for both your physical well-being and mental health. Let’s delve into the advantages of bike riding and uncover how this invigorating activity can contribute to your overall fitness, enhance your cardiovascular health, boost your mood, and bring a sense of joy to your summer adventures.
So, get ready to grab your helmet, fasten your shoelaces, and join us on a journey exploring the transformative power of pedaling through summer.
Bike riding is an excellent form of exercise that provides a full-body workout. It engages various muscle groups, including the legs, glutes, core, and even the upper body if you maintain proper posture. Regular cycling helps to build strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness. By pedaling, you strengthen your leg muscles, leading to improved balance and stability.
Additionally, cycling is a low-impact exercise, which means it puts less stress on your joints compared to highimpact activities like running. This makes it a suitable option for people of all ages and fitness levels, including those recovering from injuries or dealing with joint pain.
Cycling is also an effective way to maintain a healthy weight. It burns calories, aiding in weight management and reducing the risk of obesity. According to estimates, a person weighing 155 pounds can burn approximately 300 calories during a 30-minute moderate-intensity bike ride.
Furthermore, bike riding promotes cardiovascular health. Pedaling on a regular basis contributes to a healthier heart and improved cardiovascular function. Cycling helps to increase the heart rate, improving blood circulation and lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure. It also boosts the production of HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol)
Beyond the physical benefits, bike riding offers significant advantages for your mental well-being.

while reducing LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol), leading to a healthier lipid profile.
Beyond the physical benefits, bike riding offers significant advantages for your mental well-being. Engaging in regular physical activity releases endorphins, often referred to as “feel-good” hormones, which enhance your mood and reduce stress levels. Cycling outdoors allows you to connect with nature, enjoying the fresh air, scenery and natural beauty around you. This can have a calming effect on the mind and improve your overall sense of well-being.
Moreover, bike riding can serve as a form of meditation and stress relief. When you pedal, you can enter a state of flow, where your mind is fully absorbed in the present moment. This can help you release negative thoughts and worries, promoting mental clarity and relaxation. Cycling can be a form of active mindfulness, allowing you to focus on the rhythmic movement and experience a sense of tranquility.
Bike riding also provides an opportunity for social interaction and community engagement. You can join group rides, cycling clubs, or charity events, where you can connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for biking. This social aspect not only adds enjoyment to your rides but also fosters a sense of belonging and support.
In addition to outdoor bike riding, stationary cycling offers its own set of benefits. Indoor cycling classes, for example, provide a structured and energetic environment led by an instructor, which can be motivating and inspiring. Stationary bikes equipped with modern features like virtual training programs and interactive screens can add an element of excitement and variety to your workout routine.
Stationary cycling allows you to pedal away without worrying about traffic, weather conditions or time constraints. It provides a convenient option for those with busy schedules or limited access to outdoor biking routes. You can cycle at home or the gym, adjusting the resistance levels and intensity according to your fitness goals.
While bike riding offers numerous benefits, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Always wear a properly fitted helmet and appropriate cycling gear. Observe traffic rules, use hand signals, and stay visible to motorists. If you’re cycling outdoors, choose routes that are suitable for your skill level, and stay alert to your surroundings. For stationary cycling, make sure to adjust the bike settings and maintain proper form to prevent injuries.
Bike riding, whether outdoors or indoors, brings a multitude of benefits for your body and mind. It improves physical fitness, promotes cardiovascular health and aids in weight management. Furthermore, it enhances mental well-being, reduces stress, and allows for social interaction and community engagement. So, this summer, hop on your bike or stationary cycle and pedal your way to a healthier, happier you. Enjoy the freedom, the scenery, and the exhilarating feeling of the wind against your face as you embrace the joy of pedaling through summer.

No Boat? No Problem. No Boat? No Problem.
This summer, surf, wake, cruise … with Inland Wake+
by JILLIAN CHANDLER“We wanted to share our passion with people who maybe don’t own a boat, don’t want to buy a boat, nor have the experience of operating a boat, so they can create the same memories we have made with our family,” smiles Nichelle Holmes.
She, along with husband Reed, are the proud owners of Inland Wake+, where they offer their customers a full boating experience—with 2023 marking their second season here in Coeur d’Alene.
“We had vacationed here every summer from Western Washington (Mt. Rainier area), for 10plus years, and we knew one day we’d make the move,” shares Nichelle. “We moved here two years ago and love Coeur d’Alene just the way it is. We love being a part of this community, where everyone is so welcoming and kind.”
Growing up on the water, boating and enjoying water sports, Reed shares his passion and love of boating and the outdoors not only with his family (he and Nichelle have an 18-, 8- and almost 3-year-old) but brings his love of boating and water to the business—and their customers.
Inland Wake+’s boating season kicks off around Memorial Day, as the couple eagerly awaits having the privilege to get both locals and visitors alike out on the water for an unforgettable experience. “With our family background, and with us being a small family running this business, once you step onto our boat, you become like family to us,” says Nichelle. “We’re professional, experienced, and our ultimate goal is for everyone to have fun.”
At Inland Wake+, they provide the boat (a Malibu 25 LSV, a 25-foot wakesurf/wakeboard boat), a licensed USCG captain, wake surf coach, USCG-approved life jackets and a selection of boards from beginner to expert. Whether you’re looking for wake surf lessons, sunset surf sessions, lake tours, or cruises to dinner, Inland Wake+ handles it all. Even better, they invite you to celebrate that special moment, such as a bachelorette/bachelor party, proposal or birthday, with them. They’ll make it memorable while you sit back and take it all in.
Inland Wake+ operates not only on Lake Coeur d'Alene but Hayden Lake and Lake Pend Oreille and offers two-, four- and six-hour sessions.
The couple is proud of the business they’ve created, the success they’ve seen, and find the path they’ve chosen truly fulfilling. “It is so gratifying when we see someone smiling behind the boat or on the boat,” Nichelle says. “We truly love it when we can provide an experience our customers won’t forget.”
This summer, don’t miss your chance to get out on the water. Let Reed and Nichelle of Inland Wake+ take the wheel as you enjoy the beauty—and excitement—of the season.
It is so gratifying when we see someone smiling behind the boat or on the boat.

NIC hosted five graduation ceremonies in 10 days to celebrate different successes. More than 400 students—now NIC alumni— participated in graduation ceremonies at the Coeur d’Alene campus for the college’s Nursing program, GED certificate program, Basic Patrol Academy and the Radiography Technology program, along with NIC’s Commencement.
NIC’s Radiography Technology program graduated seven students in a pinning ceremony May 3, while the Basic Patrol Academy held a ceremony for 12 graduates May 4.
More than 150 students earned their GED certificates with support from North Idaho College’s Adult Education Center and GED testing centers, and 45 of the graduates attended a graduation ceremony May 4 at Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center. GED test graduates were commended for their perseverance through the test-taking process, which, with tutoring, took graduates anywhere from a few days to a year.
“Education can be scary,” NIC President Nick Swayne said. “Getting involved, taking that step and having the courage to step up and
come back to school and start your education journey is incredibly brave.”
NIC also held a graduation celebration for 32 students from the NIC Nursing program in a pinning ceremony May 10 in Boswell Hall. Graduates were praised for their classroom excellence that led to a National Council Licensure Examination pass rate of 97.5 percent, 17 percent higher than the national average.
NIC’s Commencement ceremony was held on May 12, and more than 300 of the 659 associate degree graduates walked across the stage in Christianson Gymnasium.
“In every class I had, I was surrounded by the most kind, dedicated, intelligent people I have ever met,” outgoing ASNIC President Damian Maxwell said. “I realized this is much more than an institution—it’s a community; a place for people from all walks of life to come to better themselves and the people around them.”
A total of 1,388 degrees and certificates were awarded to NIC students throughout the year in anything from art to welding.
NIC’s Workforce Training Center in Post Falls also celebrates a plethora of student success. With more than 4,000 graduates a year, the WTC programs host graduations year-round, including Firefighter 1 Academy, Certified Nursing Assistant, Dental Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician and more.

Sculptra is not your ordinary dermal filler. Unlike traditional fillers that merely fill in wrinkles and lines, Sculptra works from within the skin to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. As we age, collagen production slows down, leading to the formation of wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin. Sculptra effectively addresses these issues by encouraging the skin to renew itself naturally.
This unique treatment offers a gradual, subtle transformation. After a series of Sculptra injections, you will notice restored facial volume, reduced facial folds, and a rejuvenated complexion. The benefits go beyond cosmetic enhancement. By stimulating collagen production,
Sculptra also contributes to improved skin health, making your skin look and feel healthier.

Unleash your confidence in stylish swimwear
by ELIZABETH RAYWhen the sun is shining, and the waves are calling, it’s time to hit the beach and make a splash in your stylish swimwear. Your choice of swimsuit not only determines your comfort level but also plays a significant role in boosting your confidence. Finding the perfect swimsuit that complements your body, while showcasing your unique style, can make all the difference. In this article, we will explore tips and tricks to help you exude confidence in your beachwear, so you can rock the shoreline with flair and self-assurance.
First and foremost, embrace your body shape. Every body is beautiful, and the key to feeling confident in your swimsuit is embracing your unique shape. Whether you have an hourglass figure, a pear shape, an athletic build, or any other body type, there are swimsuit styles that can highlight your best features while flattering your figure. For example, if you have an hourglass figure, opt for a swimsuit with a defined
waistline to accentuate your curves. If you have a pear shape, consider a swimsuit with ruching or patterns on the top to draw attention upward. Remember, confidence starts from within, so embrace your body and let your swimwear accentuate your natural beauty.
Knowing your personal style is crucial. Just like any other piece of clothing, swimwear comes in a variety of styles, from bikinis to onepieces, tankinis to monokinis. Understanding your personal style will help you choose a swimsuit that reflects your taste and makes you feel like your best self. If you prefer a more modest look, a one-piece or tankini with strategic cutouts can offer both coverage and style. On the other hand, if you’re a fan of a bold and daring look, a bikini or a trendy high-cut one-piece can be your go-to choice. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors, patterns and designs to find the swimwear that resonates with your personal style.

YOUR BEACHWEAR perfect
In addition to considering body shape, style, fit, design details and accessories, it’s important to prioritize comfort when choosing your perfect beachwear. A comfortable swimsuit allows you to move freely, enjoy your time in the water and confidently engage in beach activities. Look for swimsuits made from high-quality, breathable fabrics that provide both support and stretch. Adjustable straps, removable padding and elastic waistbands can further enhance comfort and ensure a secure fit. Remember, when you feel comfortable in your swimsuit, you’ll exude even more confidence, allowing you to fully embrace the beach experience and showcase your personal style with ease.

Nature's Breath
Rejuvenate and revive in the great outdoors
In today's fast-paced and digitally connected world, it's increasingly crucial to step outside, unplug, and reconnect with nature. A breath of fresh air can work wonders for our physical and mental well-being. Immersing ourselves in the natural world allows us to escape daily routines and experience freedom and rejuvenation.
Fresh air brings a myriad of benefits to our bodies. Nature's air is often cleaner and oxygen-rich, providing our lungs with a refreshing boost. This increased oxygen intake improves cardiovascular health, boosts immunity and enhances energy levels. Spending time outdoors exposes us to natural sunlight, essential for vitamin D production, which is crucial for bone health and regulating mood.
Beyond physical advantages, being surrounded by nature profoundly impacts our mental and emotional well-being. Research shows that green spaces reduce stress, elevate mood and promote mental clarity. They provide respite from technology's constant stimulation, allowing us to engage our senses organically. The sights, sounds and smells of nature evoke calm and relaxation, enabling us to recharge and find balance.
Embrace the opportunity to step outside, breathe deeply, and relish nature's simple pleasures. Whether it's a leisurely stroll, a mountain hike, or sitting under a tree, the benefits of getting outdoors and breathing in fresh air are undeniable. It's an invitation to reconnect with ourselves and the world, revitalizing body, mind and spirit.

The Compass by Margaritaville is a new hotel in Medford that is a partnership with the Coquille Tribe and Margaritaville. The Coquille people’s “Spirit of the Potlatch” is a tradition of hospitality long practiced by the tribe. This welcoming environment is also pet friendly with a location that makes it a perfect base from which to explore Crater Lake National Park.
Although the size of a chain hotel, the Compass brings a resort feel with its high ceilings and tropical décor. The rolling hills of the Rogue Valley surround the pool deck, and the expansive lawn is popular for games of corn hole. The open-air bar has a beachy vibe with tropical drinks, and happy hour offering amazing specials each afternoon. The tropical décor carries into comfortable rooms with custom bedding. Families will love the bunk bed option with a choice of a kingor two queen-size beds, or splurge on a one-bedroom king suite for a couple’s getaway. Pets are welcome with a modest pet fee. Each morning, enjoy a scrumptious breakfast buffet with both hot and cold favorites.

Traveling with pets during the summer necessitates alfresco dining, and Medford has a variety of options. The Southern Oregon Artisan Corridor, located in Central Point, will delight foodies with the Rogue Creamery’s award-winning blue cheeses, Lillie Belle Farms gourmet chocolates and Ledger David Cellars. Pick up supplies for a picnic or relax at Ledger David’s outdoor tasting room to enjoy your bounty. No trip to Crater Lake National Park is complete without a trip to Beckie’s Café for the celebrated pies. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Beckie’s has been dishing up delectable comfort food since 1926. Get your pie to go and enjoy at the picnic tables nestled in a garden shaded by old-growth trees.
A local favorite is Jasper’s, with a variety of burgers, hotdogs and shakes. It’s a dive, but the outdoor garden area is pleasant with tables under shade trees and awnings. Order a burger patty for your dog to enjoy. Jasper’s also has puppy ice cream. Many of the wineries on the wine trails surrounding Medford have pet-friendly areas where visitors can enjoy outdoor tastings.
Insider Tip: Enjoy happy hour each afternoon at The 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill in the Compass, which offers outdoor seating, and Fido is welcome. Great specials on food and drink.

Jaws drop upon the first views of this water-filled collapsed volcano at Crater Lake National Park. It is absolutely stunning, as the rocky terrain contrasts with crystal blue water. The massive snowfall this year deluged the park with 52 feet of snow, so visitors will likely see snow into July before Rim Drive around the lake is completely clear. The park is surprisingly pet friendly with five trails that allow pets. These range from short hikes to the challenging Pacific Crest Trail, which passes through the park. Other areas include the overlooks, roads, campgrounds, picnic areas and paved parking lots.
Insider Tip: Plan to arrive at the park early to avoid the crowds.
You will want to take Highway 62, also known as Crater Lake Highway, from Medford to Crater Lake National Park. On the way back, stop at the Rogue River Gorge Viewpoint for a short .3-mile loop trail, which has four viewpoints of the Rogue River Gorge and interpretive signs. It is pet friendly, but some animals may be frightened by the loud rushing water. Right next door is Beckie’s for a pie stop. A little further down Highway 62 is the Natural Bridge Trail. The shorter trail leads to an ancient lava tube where the Rogue River sinks away, running underground before popping back up further downstream. Later in the summer, when water levels are lower, it forms a natural land bridge. The trail is very scenic with plenty of benches for a rest or to enjoy the sounds of the birds chirping and the rushing water. This stop is also pet friendly.
