You Are Already a Perfect You
The Pain in my B--CLENCHED MUSCLES CAN BE PROBLEMATIC
O
n my first trip through San Francisco back in 1993, I was a passenger in a car cruising downtown very close to the lane of parked cars. Being young and unfamiliar to busy streets, I was quite scared! In a micro-moment I had a very odd realization that not only was I clenching my butt from being so scared, but also that I had been clenching my butt all my life in response to stressful, uncomfortable, and emotional situations! Once brought to my attention, I was able to swiftly change that pattern. I stopped feeding stress to my tired, clenched butt and began freeing my body of a chronic, stress-filled holding pattern. If I hadn’t managed the stress being held in my butt muscles, it may have later manifested in discomfort or pain. My tight muscles could have easily pulled my pelvis into a rotation that would have then affected my legs and feet, and eventually my neck and head, giving rise to the potential of arthritic conditions, limited range of motion, or a number of apparently unrelated conditions. In other words, that single issue could have created functional problems later in life. A clenched jaw or butt, tense shoulders, or tight muscles may not seem like a big deal in the moment, but in the long-term this type of muscular stress can become problematic. Releasing muscular tension through regular massage therapy is just one way to help manage this type of stress. Some people believe that massage therapy is a luxury rather than an investment, but others find the opposite to be true. Massage therapy provides many benefits. At the cellular level, it increases circulation and lymph drainage, helps to flush and eliminate toxins, softens fascia, invites the body’s natural endorphins to relieve pain, and relaxes and re-educates muscles to move with greater ease. Regular massage also promotes body awareness of how holding patterns can contribute to seemingly unrelated pain. Massage also induces “feel-good” hormones to pulse through the body, making the body feel as if it’s just had a two-week vacation! And contrary to some beliefs, massage does not have to be painful to be effective, but you may need to “try out” several therapists to find one who works well with you. Some specialized manual therapies, such as Myo-Fascial Release, Trigger Point Therapy, Structural Integration or Rolfing and Feldenkrais, address holding patterns more specifically and effectively than generalized massage. Sometimes it takes several treatments for tight muscles to truly relax, release and relearn; as with any bad habit, it takes time and commitment to break and establish a new pattern. Today, consider the holding patterns in your body and how they might be affecting the future of your long-term health and vitality. Massage therapy may be a great option to help you begin changing those patterns and reclaiming your functional health. here is really only one goal in life, that is, to be you and to be you as well as you possibly can. Over the twenty odd years that I’ve been working with people on how to improve their lives I still find it exciting to see the way in which everything seems to start falling into place for them, once they find their true self and begin living out of that. The problem is, most of us spend our lives trying to be something other than our true selves. We try to live up to what we think is expected of us – or – what we believe a person like us ought to be. This expectation comes from all around us society, parents, teachers, ministers, the media etc. We are surrounded by continual, relentless and staggering pressure to “be a particular way”, to “look a particular way” to have “particular dreams goals and ambitions” to hold “particular beliefs and values” to have a “particular type of job or profession” or a “particular level of education” and so on. To make matters worse – by the time we are in our twenties, most of these expectations are so deeply embedded within our mind that we believe that they are our own ideas! Most of us end up mistakenly believing that our true self is somehow inadequate, faulty, useless or just plain bad. Instead, we create, in our minds, an image of an ‘ideal self’ which exemplifies everything that we think we ought to be. Now we dedicate the rest of lives to the pursuit of this ideal. Sadly, most of us are doomed to either fail in this pursuit, get stuck somewhere along the way or sabotage ourselves. In some cases, we achieve the goals of the ideal self but still find our lives unsatisfying and unfulfilling. The solution is to make what I call the return journey to our true self. Everyone can do this, with some help and guidance. Unfortunately, many people are scared to make this journey because they have come to believe (mistakenly) that there is something wrong with whom they really are and that they will not like their true self. My response to people who are afraid of rediscovering their true selves is to point out that God doesn’t create rubbish. We are not born into the world alienated from ourselves. We are, in fact, born into the world as a perfect us. Uniquely talented and gifted - endowed with everything we need for a successful, happy fulfilled life. Thankfully, even though this person gets buried or suppressed, he/she is still there, it is not possible to destroy it. Next month I will talk about ways to begin this journey and how you can change the way you look at life so that you can increase your self-belief, self respect, self-confidence and decrease your stress and anxiety.

e’ve all heard that money doesn’t grow on trees. True, but maybe that’s just a technicality. What if you found a way to put your money to work for you by investing it underground? local nonprofit assisted living and memory care facility, Coeur d’Alene Homes, has developed their own Horticultural Therapy (HT) Garden they named the Serenity Garden. Created by landscape designer Anne Hanenburg out of Spokane, the Serenity Garden was created specifically to meet the needs of their residents. Hanenburg believes that a garden should stimulate all the senses. Eyesight and hearing are often the first senses to diminish as we age; in the Serenity Garden she used plants with memory-evoking fragrances like roses and lavender. The Serenity Garden at Coeur d’Alene Homes also has a large water feature at its core. Water is known for its healing power and the sound the water feature makes is meant to deliberately calm and soothe. “We have seen amazing results in our Serenity Garden,” explains Christel Rosen, Director of Nursing at Coeur d’Alene Homes. “If a resident suffering from Alzheimer’s becomes agitated, a walk through the Serenity Garden has a dramatic calming effect on their behavior.” Coeur d’Alene Homes hosts an annual Garden Party each May that invites volunteers and families to help residents plant flowers. Throughout the summer months residents work hands-on with staff to create beautiful bouquets, plant vegetable seeds or pluck deadhead flower tops to encourage new blooms to form. The History of Horticultural Therapy (HT) In the 1940’s and 1950’s, HT was used to care for hospitalized war veterans. The program was such a success that today HT

is recognized as a practical and viable treatment with wideranging benefits for people in therapeutic, vocational and wellness programs. A more technical definition from the American Horticultural Therapy Association is: “Horticultural Therapy is the use of professionally directed plant, gardening, and nature activities for the purpose of restoring the physical and mental health of its participants.” Benefits of HT HT is a fantastic therapy for the elderly because it helps to maintain or improve physical health by providing unlimited opportunities for exercising, increasing flexibility, improving coordination and balance, not to mention building physical strength. Multiple studies have demonstrated that respiration, pulse and blood pressure respond positively to plants and helps our aging population keep healthy and strong. In addition, reports show that gardening can possibly prevent the development of dementia. In a study of over 2,000 older people living in France, Fabrigoule et al (1995) showed that those who gardened, travelled or carried out odd jobs or knitting were significantly less likely to develop dementia than those who did not. When HT was specifically used in Alzheimer’s research, scientists found that patients with Alzheimer’s were less likely to fall or have violent moods, and were often able to function at their highest ability when given access to a garden. Easter and Tax Changes for 2012 MANDATORY ANNUAL INFLATION ADJUSTMENTS

andatory annual inflation adjustments generally affect federal income tax brackets, retirement plan contribution limits and exemption levels from year to year. The 3.8% inflation rate (measured by the Consumer Price Index) used to index 2012 tax rates is higher than it was in the previous two years; the adjustments could lower your tax bill on your 2012 return (due in April 2013). Here are some changes that may affect you and your family.
The income phaseout limit for deducting contributions to traditional IRAs (for active participants in employer-sponsored retirement plans) rose to $58,000 AGI ($92,000 for joint filers), an increase of $2,000 over 2011. Happy Easter! EASTER CELEBRATIONS AROUND THE WORLD
A
s a butterfly soared overhead, one caterpillar said to the other, “You’ll never get me up in one of those things.” Yet for every caterpillar the time comes when the urge to eat and grow subsides and he instinctively begins to form a chrysalis around himself. The chrysalis hardens and you’d think for all the world that the caterpillar is dead. But one spring morning the life inside the chrysalis begins to writhe, the top cracks open, and a beautifully-formed butterfly emerges. For hours it will stand stretching and drying its wings, moving them slowly up and down, up and down. And then, before you know it, the butterfly glides aloft, effortlessly riding the currents of the air. Somehow, the miracle of the butterfly never loses its fascination for us. Perhaps because the butterfly is a living parable of the promise of resurrection. Around the world millions of people celebrate Easter, a celebration that reminds us that Jesus’ resurrection from the grave is God’s proof to us that death is not the end. The empty tomb and Jesus’ Spirit within us testify that Easter morning is God’s triumph over death. And ultimately, Jesus promised, God will raise from the dead us who believe in His Son. Here’s a window into some of the culture and traditions around the world that take place every Easter season: ARGENTINA Easter Sunday in Argentina consists of consuming eggs as well as the special Easter cake, Rosca de Pascua. People exchange eggs not only with their family, but also with friends and colleagues and the day culminates in attending mass followed by a big family gathering involving lots of food, often a huge barbecue. GREECE On Good Friday in Athens, a replica of Christ’s tomb is carried through town. People flock to churches at midnight on Saturday carrying unlit candles that they light from the Holy Flame and walk through town enjoying a glorious display of
fireworks, bells and jubilation. Easter Sunday’s menu features spit-fire roast lamb and lots of colored eggs. ITALY While Easter mass will be held in every church in Italy, the biggest and most popular mass is held by the Pope at St. Peter’s Basilica. On Good Friday, the Pope celebrates the Via Crucis or Stations of the Cross in Rome near the Colosseum. A huge cross with burning torches lights the sky as the stations of the cross are described in several languages. At the end, the Pope gives a blessing. SCOTLAND Easter in Scotland is a mostly laid back event featuring traditional things like attending mass and having a big meal, but Scots also add a bit of fun for the kids - after eggs are boiled and painted in all kinds of colors and designs, they’re taken to park hills for rolling on Easter Sunday. The event symbolizes the rolling away of stones on Jesus’ tomb, thereby assisting in His resurrection. SEVILLE, SPAIN Seville in Andalucia is the most famed Spanish region for Easter celebrations. It has 52 different religious brotherhoods whose members parade through the streets for the entire Holy Week manifesting the crucifixion. Processions continue for almost 24 hours culminating in the jubilation of the resurrection which is observed by floats covered in flowers, dancing in the streets and traditional sweet cakes. SWEDEN Humour-filled celebrations commence on Easter Saturday with children dressing up as good witches and giving out letters and cards in return for eggs, sweets and coins. On Easter Sunday, food takes centre stage where, in typically Nordic fashion, the

feast comprises mostly fish. Edibles include different kinds of herring, smoked salmon, a hint of roast ham and various cheeses. Eggs are exchanged and used in a game where participants roll them down roofing tiles to see which can go the farthest without breaking.

FRANCE Church bells ring every day of the year except for the three days of Easter. Legend has it that the bells stop ringing because they’ve made a trip to Rome in order to be blessed. On Easter Sunday, the bells make their return and tour the country sprinkling chocolate eggs, chickens and rabbits in every garden. After midday, children head to the gardens to find the hidden treasures left by the bells. The day includes a hearty meal, normally consisting of lamb, the Easter dish of choice. BRAZIL Brazil has the largest Catholic population in the world. Holy Week - Semana Santa in Portuguese - is observed throughout the country with processions and rituals similar to those of other Catholic countries, yet made unique by the specific context in which they happen. Holy Week is held from 9 to 12 April, is the most important religious event in Brazil. The processions and masses occur in virtually all cities. In some of these events become diversified attractions, but that did not stop having a religious nature. While many take the opportunity for a journey of pleasure and relaxation, others prefer to accompany processions and masses performed in some Brazilian cities.

istinguished Young Women of Coeur d’Alene is an official local preliminary of Distinguished Young Women, a national scholarship program that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership and talent in young women. In addition to earning scholarships for college, those who participate in the Distinguished Young Women program develop friendships, self-confidence and
other life skills that pave the way for future success. The Distinguished Young Women experience is open to every eligible young woman and there is no cost to participate. The competition for scholarships begins at the local level, in towns and cities like yours. Participants from throughout the region join together in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where a panel of five judges will select the representative(s) who will move on to the next level of competition at Distinguished Young Women of Idaho. The young woman selected as the state representative will then compete in the annual National Finals
competition in Mobile, Alabama. State representatives from all 50 states will travel to the historic port city of Mobile, Alabama, for the 55th Annual Distinguished Young Women National Finals, June 28-30, 2012. They will spend two weeks getting to know outstanding girls from across the country, engaging in community service and team development activities and preparing for the National Finals competition. All state representatives will compete for a share of more than $130,000 in cash scholarships and the opportunity to represent the national program as the Distinguished Young Woman of America. FRUIT THIEVES A fruit farmer hired two new workers for his fields, but before he sent them out for the day’s work, he told them he had just one rule: don’t steal any fruit. The two agreed to obey the rule. After the day was over, the two workers came in to report to the farmer. He asked them if they had stolen any fruit, and immediately their conscience forced them to tell the truth.
