Myofascial Release EFFECTIVE FOR MANY PHYSICAL CONDITIONS - KEY TO ENHANCED MOVEMENT
T
o understand this technique it is important to understand the fascial system. Myo, means muscle, and fascia (pronounced “fasha”) is the connective tissue. The fascia is a specialized system of the body that has an appearance similar to a spider’s web or a sweater. Fascia is very densely woven, covering and interpenetrating every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein as well as all of our internal organs including heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord. The most interesting aspect of the fascial system is that it is not just a system of separate coverings. It is actually one structure that exists from head to foot without interruption. In this way, you can begin to see that each part of the entire body is connected to every other part by the fascia, like the yarn in a sweater. Fascia also plays an important role in the support of our bodies, since it surrounds and attaches to all structures. These structures would not be able to provide stability without the constant pull of the fascial system. In fact, our bones can be thought of as tent poles, which cannot support the structure without the constant support of the guide wires (or fascia) to keep an adequate amount of tension to allow the tent (or body) to remain upright with proper equilibrium. Trauma, such as a fall, whiplash or surgery can cause tight areas in the fascia. This system is also affected by repetitive motions or just habitual poor posture over time, which have a cumulative effect. The changes caused in the fascial system influence the skeletal framework for our posture. The fascia can exert excessive pressure producing pain or restriction of motion, decreased flexibility and is a determining factor in our ability to withstand stress and strain.
Myofascial Release is a gentle, safe and highly effective, whole body, “hands on” approach. It allows us to look at each patient as unique with focus on the whole body rather than just the injured part. Often where we feel the pain, is not where the problem really is located. MFR utilizes varying pressure from heavy to light to eliminate pain and restore motion as well as deepens the relaxation response. Myofascial Release is used to treat acute pain due to accident or injury as well as chronic neck, back, sciatic pain. It is also used to treat arthritis, Fibromyalgia, sciatica, TMJ, post surgical scar and lymphedema, just to name a few. Myofascial Release or “MFR” is a very effective hands-on technique that provides sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. It also allows the body to move to release holding patterns. Patients may be seen one-on-one with a therapist or may opt for co-treatments with two therapists. During these hands-on treatments therapists use may use other manual techniques and movement therapy. The patient is an active participant in the treatment program. Each patient is given a home program to maximize benefit from therapy. This promotes independence though education in proper body mechanics, enhancement of strength, flexibility, as well as postural and movement awareness. Coeur d’ Alene Hand Therapy and Healing Center specializes in Advanced Myofascial Release and manual therapy techniques. Call 208.664.2901 for more information or to receive a free consultation.

Getting Help with Your Budget BROUGHT TO YOU BY GARDEN PLAZA OF POST FALLS
O
ne of the adjustments that is part of life once you end your working years is adjusting to living on a different kind of income. You get used to that regular paycheck over the life of your careers in the working world and while we may be very happy to leave the stresses of the workaday life, that paycheck is one part of that world that we may miss when they finally stop. Of course, many senior citizens have some resources going into their senior years such as savings, investments, a retirement program, and, of course, Social Security. But the thing that’s hard to get used is that you are now drawing funds from a limited pool. Whether the amount of your retirement resources is big or small, outside of the income from interest and dividends, you are no longer replenishing those funds. It seems strange to say it but you have to think about how long you can live on those funds. While you would all like to live to 90 or older, from a practical point of view, we don’t want to “outlive our savings” and then become a burden to our children to support as they are working hard to raise and support their young families. So the life of senior citizen means going on some form of budget. And anything we can do to stretch the use of those retirement funds means that they will last longer as we continue to do the right thing for our health with diet and exercise so we can live a long life of a senior citizen. One resource that is worth taking a look at are programs that are geared to helping senior citizens conserve on their limited funds. One such resource is the phenomenon of the “senior discount” which is often offered at restaurants and other retail institutions to help us out. While you may be working to look
young and defeat the influence of age on your health and looks, when it comes to senior citizen discounts, its time to be honest about your age and take advantage of any help that is being offered to stretch your fixed income as much as you can. Public service companies such as your electric, gas or water companies also have programs that you can take advantage of to keep those bills under control. The one thing you want for the sake of the budget is that your bills will stay the same from month to month. But when your gas or electric bill changes a lot because of the influence of the hot summer temperatures or the cold winter months which use a lot of home heating fuel, those bills can get pretty erratic. So contact your utility companies and see what they can do for you. One program that is available to everyone is averaging your monthly utility bill. The gas or electric bill can do a quick calculation of your last year’s usage and average that and then bill you that fixed amount each month. In this way, you will know each month exactly what to expect so you don’t have any “surprises” in the mail when the bills come due. Keep your eyes open for ways that the public institutions you use the most work to help out senior citizens. They know that you are on a fixed income and nobody wants to see seniors struggle to make ends meet. Sometimes your local or state government may even have programs to reduce your sales taxes at the grocery store. Take advantage of these plans and don’t let yourself feel bad about it at all. You have worked hard all your life to support others and to be a good citizen. So let society pay you back with whatever help can be offered. You certainly deserve it.

Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LEGAL, INSURANCE AND INVESTMENT AFFAIRS
I
t’s that call that comes out of the blue, the call that you never saw coming. Bad news delivered by a friend over the phone usually starts with some hesitation in their voice. I remember the surreal feeling I had when the plant manager told me that my healthy husband had collapsed at work and was being taken to the emergency room. On that day things changed forever and the call that I never saw coming was just the start of what was to be one of the biggest challenges of my life. By the time I arrived to the hospital, my husband, John was being moved from the ER to intensive care, there was a flurry of activity to make the appropriate family notifications. Then while we waited in the intensive care unit, my mind went into overdrive. John was keeper of the family documents. He filed the legal documents like our power of attorney and will. He kept track of investments and insurance policies. He knew about the medical insurance policy and our long-term health care policy. John handled everything! As a nurse, both the rhythm and flow of the ICU were familiar to me. But suddenly taking charge of all our legal, insurance and investment affairs was overwhelming. Where would I start? Where was everything stored? What about the passwords, websites and documents? I knew some of the data was on the computer, some in a file drawer and some with an attorney. I knew enough like most of us, but what I needed was a single source, a central place where I could lay my hands on all our personal information, phone numbers, passwords, usernames, documents and policies. It was all overwhelming and only seemed to be getting worse with every fleeting thought.
As my husband started to slowly recover and the thought that I may lose him dissipated, my previous anxiety and fear morphed into a plan. A plan where I would help others prepare for life’s emergencies. I set out to create a practical, yet simple way to collect all the necessary information needed in times just like these. After a few years of planning and researching, I effectively designed a simple and practical workbook whereby all of “Life’s Stuff” could be organized in one place for anyone to access. Keep in mind what may be common knowledge to you would take an outsider considerable time to research. As a completed product, Life’s Stuff is a welcome gift for an estate executor attempting to follow instructions, for the first visit to an estate attorney and most importantly for your family. Each chapter has a separate area of focus making this an easy process to understand, follow and complete. Most of the information needed is easy to find and once your workbook is complete, you and your loved ones will feel the safety of knowing your family will be prepared for life’s – and – death’s emergencies. AUTUMN IN SANDPOINT
Autumn in Sandpoint THE UNDISCOVERED SEASON
T
hink about the beauty of the changing colors of autumn and one normally thinks of New England. Think about Sandpoint and thoughts of winter snowboarding or summer lake fun comes to mind. For many, there are simply two seasons in this neck of North Idaho woods: summer and winter. However, the national media has noted one other great time of year in North Idaho: fall. In the last two years there have been at least four national articles written about North Idaho’s autumn, and one in the Canadian Press that stated “Idaho foliage defies idea that autumn colour is something only found in the East.”. Changes come quickly and many aspects of life seem to alter overnight. Water levels are let out by the Army Corps of Engineers at the end of September, dropping six inches a day on massive Lake Pend Oreille. Creeks that roar in the spring and early summer are trickling now, and trails that are impassable then become a delight of clear nights and brilliantly colored days. By October the summer tourists are gone; the winter tourists are still months away. It is a quieter time in Sandpoint and its sister cities. Last year when Sandpoint was named America’s Most Beautiful Small Town by Rand McNally, the idea that they had only seen the town during summer and winter gave rise to the thought that they had never seen Sandpoint at its most beautiful: during fall. Autumn also brings a host of events. In northeastern Washington the North Pend Oreille Valley Lions Club starts their Autumn Colors train excursions every weekend during the month of October. Bonners Ferry and Sandpoint has their final Farmers Markets, and then there are the Oktoberfests. Just a few years ago, it seemed every town in the area had this traditional German celebration of beer and harvest. In this year of tough economic times, only Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint seem to be up to the task, with CdA’s landing September 28 and 29, and Sandpoint’s taking place October 4. In Coeur d’Alene the Oktoberfest features a fun filled weekend complete with the Gran Fondo biking event, three venues with live entertainment, German food, and activities for the entire family. Sandpoint’s Oktoberfest takes place at the old granary by Evan Brothers Coffee featuring a live music by bands including a polka band and dance, a performance by the 12 WWW.NEWSLINESONLINE.COM
Sandpoint Music Conservatory, vendors and artist’s booths, a Waiter Race, and Beer Taste Off between Laughing Dog, NoLi, Selkirk Abbey, and MickDuff’s. In addition to other events, the night culminates with a party and dance at Evans Brothers. This all kicks off the Harvest Wine Walk. All around Sandpoint for the entire month of October visitors and locals alike can taste fine wines, and meet the winemakers at several locations throughout town where patrons can taste wines from local and regional wineries in many of the Downtown restaurants, bars, shops, and galleries; there will be live music in a warm and friendly community atmosphere! Rain or shine; all wine tastings and entertainment will be held inside participating venues. Fun events pepper the downtown landscape, but it is the countryside that is visually mesmerizing. Colors run the gamut from reds to golds against the backdrop of the deep greens and reddish browns of the coniferous forests. With some clearing of the leaves, formerly hidden glimpses of the many grand waterways and lakes now become apparent. Picnics are a favorite this time of year, and bikers and hikers seem to come out of the woodwork. Certainly, many agree that the best time of year for the phenomenal photo op is the Fall. While you can drive just a short distance in almost any direction to find great scenery, one of the best ways to see this Fall foliage is to drive the International Selkirk Loop. Sunset Magazine calls the International Selkirk Loop the “West’s Best New Scenic Drive” This 280-mile scenic drive is a meandering wander covering many of the most beautiful parts of North Idaho, Eastern Washington, and Southern British Columbia. The Idaho portion runs from Priest River, through Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry, to the border town of Porthill. If you’d like to try something different you can see the fall colors from a different perspective. Try out a lake cruise. A great way to see the leaves is the Fall Foliage Island Tour Lake Pend Oreille Cruises offer a fall cruise of the Clark Fork Delta. Cruise leaves from Kramer Marina in East Hope. Or, see it from the air. Take an aerial tour with Sandpoint Seaplane Service. There are few places like North Idaho, and few times of year like autumn. Together, they make for a magical time of year.

The Love Between Pet Owners and Pets UNCONDITIONAL LOVE FROM PETS
W
e talk to our pets and they listen. They give us unconditional love and await our attention. They amuse us and make us feel good about ourselves. As Samuel Butler famously said, “The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.” After a hard day’s work, the moment your dog runs to you when you are home wipes off the day’s fatigue. There are innumerable incidents of where a dog saved his owner or a cat woke up her owner when there was a fire in the house. They can understand when you are standing at the door or when you are depressed. Pets fill in that void in our lives that no human relationship can fulfill. Medical research says that seniors who own dogs visit a doctor less than who do not. It is a proven fact that pet owners have lower blood pressure or that the companionship of a pet helps families and people cope with serious illness. Playing with your pet burns up to 250 calories an hour. There are dogs that assist blind people in their daily lives and there are dogs that help police force in their mission to protect people. George Salpiatro, Connecticut lost his vision. He received two-year old Karl, a German shepherd as his assistant dog. As Salpiatro says, “I like to tell people that my opportunity to be equal to others came with four legs and a tail that wags!”

But there would probably be fewer people who would own a pet because of the above mentioned reasons. People who own pets simply love their pets and any and every benefit that they get because of the association is just a byproduct. And it is true that once a pet lover always a pet lover.

THE ADVENTURES OF THE FLYNN TWINS Part 3: New Friends and Old Foe By Jan St. George
“What did she say?” Arianna asked as her mom hung up the phone. Her brother, Tyler, looked up from the book he was reading. “That was Sasha from the tribal office. She told me that we illegally removed the arrowhead from the beach.” “Whoa,” said Tyler. “Does that mean Ari could go to jail?”
Did You Know? A heritage is something, such as a way of life or traditional culture, that passes from one generation to the next.
“Time out,” Tyler said as he backed away, blinking quickly. The mom who was umpiring the game waved her arms to stop play. “What’s wrong?” asked Bryce, who was catching. “I can’t see. The blade of one of the tomahawks caught the sun wrong.” Tyler looked more closely at the group of men. “Hey, wait. I think I recognize that guy.” “Who?” asked Bryce.
“Yes, if the tribe chose to charge her, and if she were a few years older,” their mom said. “The tribe prefers that all artifacts are left undisturbed in their current location. However, many people keep them, and others, like us, contact the tribe for advice on the ownership of the arrowhead. The tribe then considers all of the circumstances and makes a determination of the person’s guilt.”
“The older guy with the bristly grey whiskers. He tried to break into our house to steal the arrowhead my sister found.”
“I didn’t mean to do anything wrong,” Arianna said. Two tears were streaming down her cheeks. “I’ll give it back.”
The whiskered man heard the yelling, grabbed the tomahawk, and started running toward his car. Tyler and his new friends were quicker. They circled the man, who had stopped running and was panting. The dads, moms, and dancers, seeing the commotion, ran over and joined the circle.
“Sasha was very understanding. She invited us to come to the reservation this Saturday to attend their weekly family gathering. She wants you to know more about their heritage so you can share it with others.”
“Let’s get him!” Bryce yelled, and the teams ran off the field toward the group of men. “Wait, boys,” yelled the umpire, dashing after them.
“Mom!” Tyler exclaimed. “It’s the man who tried to get Ari’s arrowhead.”
“Maybe I’ll see a real tomahawk!” Tyler said.
“You’re right, Tyler,” his mom said.
“We’ll see...” replied their mom.
“George Thoroughgood. What is going on?” Sasha asked. “Is this true?”
***** “You must be Arianna,” said a tall woman with dark skin, a long braid, and a friendly smile as Arianna climbed out of their car. “I’m Sasha.” “I’m sorry I took the arrowhead,” Arianna said, holding it out to Sasha. “Hmm, this one looks like it was made from granite,” Sasha said, examining the artifact. “It’s a bit unsymmetrical. See, one side is longer than the other. This would have caused the arrow to miss its target.” “Wow! You can tell all of that from that arrowhead?” Tyler asked.

mom was sitting on a bench in the shade weaving long strands of grass together with the other moms from the tribe. He looked back at the pitcher and blinked at the flash of sun hitting the metal of a weapon being crafted by one of the dads.
“Yes, I’ve seen a few of them in my lifetime,” Sasha said with a slight smile. “As this arrowhead doesn’t have any unique features, I would like you to be its guardian, Arianna. Are you willing to accept this responsibility?” “Yes, of course I will,” Arianna said. “I’ll keep it in my purse for now,” said Mrs. Flynn as she came around the car to greet Sasha. “That would be best,” Sasha replied. “My children and other members of our tribe have been looking forward to spending time with all of you.” ***** “Hey, batter, batter, batter. Swing! batter, batter, batter.” Tyler heard the players from the other team chanting as he wheeled his bat around while waiting for the pitch. He glanced over at his sister, who was learning a tribal dance with other young girls. His

“Yeah,” admitted George, looking down at the ground. “Why, George?” asked Sasha. “It’s just an arrowhead.” One of the elder men came forward. “George, put down the tomahawk.” There was a muffled thud as it hit the dry ground. “Thank you, George. Now, do you know anything about the various artifacts that have been appearing on ebay lately? We’ve been trying to find the person, but they are using a post office box and are not responding to our emails.” “I needed the money.” George said this so quietly that Tyler could barely hear him. “I didn’t think anyone would find out.” “Mommy, is he going to go to jail?” asked Arianna. The mom who had been umpiring stepped forward. “George Thoroughgood, you are under arrest for the trafficking of stolen property.” She led him away. Sasha turned to Tyler. “Thank you, Tyler. We didn’t think it was anyone from our tribe, but we were wrong. Our ancestors are smiling down on you.” “You’re welcome. Can I finish my at-bat now?” The families packed the baselines to watch the end of the game. Everyone cheered as Tyler hit the walkoff home run. “Now you’re a hero, my friend” said Bryce, as they walked off the field together. The End.
Can you list the nine defensive players in a baseball game? List them below: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Answer: Pitcher, Catcher, First Baseman, Second Baseman, Shortstop, Third Baseman, Right Fielder, Center Fielder and Left Fielder.
When we first met Tyler and Arianna, they had been building a sand castle at the beach. Arianna discovered an arrowhead. While waiting to hear back from the tribal headquarters about the ownership of the arrowhead, an older man, who had approached them at the beach, tried to break into their house. Tyler had set up a barricade of Wedgits building blocks in front of the door, which crashed when the stranger tried to enter.

Grow Your Own Crystals! BROUGHT TO YOU BY MOBIUS SCIENCE CENTER
C
rystals are amazing but the process of making one usually involves boiling water, multiple steps, and often a disappointing result after waiting for several weeks. At Mobius we’ve found an easy, almost guaranteed to work process to grow a sizable crystal in as little as a week. Say hello to my little friend: Alum. Used as an ingredient in making pickles, alum can be found in the spice section of many grocery stores and will grow a decent crystal with minimum effort. Give this a try: 1. In a small glass container mix ½ cup of hot tap water with 2 ½ tablespoons alum. Don’t worry if it doesn’t all dissolve. Place the jar in a quiet spot for two to three days. 2. Once you observe a bunch of small crystals formed in the bottom of the jar, pour the solution into a clean jar and scoop out the crystals onto a paper towel. Use your hands to sift through the crystals until you find a large one. 3. Here’s the tricky part: you need to attach a piece of fishing line to the crystal. We use fishing line because crystals won’t grow on the line itself . We make a little loop at one end of the fishing line and tighten it just enough to hold the crystal in place. 4. Suspend the crystal in the clean jar filled with a mixture of ½ cups of hot tap water and 2 ½ tablespoons of alum, making sure that the crystal doesn’t touch the bottom or sides of the jar. Place the jar back in a quiet spot and check on it every day. If crystals start forming on the sides or bottom of the jar, pour the solution into a clean jar and re-suspend the crystal in it. 5. The crystal should grow noticeably every day, around the fishing line. We’ve kept our crystals growing for up to two weeks with great results. When you are happy with
the size of the crystal, you can pour out the remaining solution and use the fishing line to hang the crystal wherever you please. 6. Further experiments: Try suspending two or more crystals at the same time in the same jar. Does this effect the growth of the crystals? Or try coloring the solution with food dye. Play with the variables. If you discover something cool, let us know at: info@mobiusspokane.org *Thanks to Anne Marie Helmenstine Ph.D and about.com for the alum crystal idea.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE
Tubbs Hill BY COLIN ANDERSON
W
hether you’re looking for a short nature walk, brisk hike, or just some place to take a quick dip into Coeur d’Alene Lake, Tubbs Hill has something for just about everyone. Managed by the Coeur d’Alene Parks Department, this 120-acre park lets you get away to nature just feet from the bustling of Sherman Avenue and the resort. There are two trailheads and the most commonly used is at the 3rd street parking lot next to the boat launch. Here you’ll find a map that shows several different routes that criss cross through the area. The best part about this trail is its relative ease of access and condition. Because it’s widely used by tourists and locals alike, it’s well packed and in most places plenty wide enough to get several people through at a time. Most choose to follow the main trail along the lake. This trail is relatively flat and is great if you have young children or pets with you (dogs are allowed but must be leashed at all times). In the summer months you’ll see people scurrying down to one of the many inlets where a rocky beach and a cool refreshing dip awaits. Remember not to blaze your own trail as trampling vegetation can have many negaSki Schweitzer Mountian, with over 2900 acres of amazing terrain and renowned tree skiing! tive effects on the local landscape. Once you pass the first point the trail typically becomes a little less busy as there are fewer swimming holes. It also becomes a little bit steeper. Here more serious hikers can access the upper trail and turn their two mile hike into four or six miles. No matter which trail you choose, the large ponderosas and other vegetation keep the path well shaded. If you continue on the lower trail you’ll have ample opportunities for great photos of the lake. You’ll also come across a swinging bridge that will test your balance. Often times we take for granted places like Tubbs Hill, putting it on our to-do list but never actually tackling it. With so many varying trails, you have plenty of reasons to keep coming back. Having a nature trail so close to a downtown is incredibly rare and is something everyone should appreciate. For more information on Tubbs Hill including interactive maps and history, visit the Coeur d’Alene Parks Department at 710 East Mullan Avenue.

Indoor Air Quality - There is Something in the Air FIVE WAYS TO BREATHE EASY THIS WINTER
A
s the weather starts to cool off and we look ahead to the long winter, now is a good time for homeowners to think about how to improve indoor air quality. Have you ever stopped to think about how clean the air in your home is? You might be surprised to learn that the air you and your family breathe each day may contain pollutants such as: • Pollen • Mold • Volatile Organic Compounds • Dust Mites • Pet Dander • Smoke & Dust
if they become saturated, they can no longer do their job. 3. Duct Cleaning – Air ducts circulate your air throughout your home and happen to also be a very attractive place for dust, pollen, mold and other contaminants to collect. Every few years it’s important to have your ducts professionally cleaned to ensure they aren’t harboring dangerous contaminants that can spread throughout your home. How long since you’ve had your ducts cleaned? Have you ever? 4. Humidifiers – Proper humidity balance not only means improved comfort, but it also helps to minimize dust problems. Low humidity leads to more dead skin and dust in the house, while high humidity can promote the development of dust mites.
Over time this can negatively affect your health in a number of ways, including aggravated allergies, increased chance for asthma attacks via airborne triggers, and illness caused by reactions to poisonous toxins and bacteria in the air. Here are 5 ways you can stay healthy by maintaining high indoor air quality in your home: 1. Cleaning Your Air Conditioner – One of the best things you can do is to clean your air conditioner inside and out on a regular basis. A properly maintained AC will not only help keep your air clean (and you healthy), but the system will also function more efficiently and last longer, thus saving you money. 2. Replace Your Air Filters – Changing or cleaning out your air filters regularly is one of the easiest and most important parts of air conditioner and furnace maintenance. These air filters are your number one line of defense against all manner of indoor air pollutants, but
5. Electronic Air Cleaners – An electronic air cleaner can remove up to 99.98% of airborne allergens from all the air that is heated or cooled, making it 100 times more effective than a 1” filter. For more information about how you can improve the air quality in your home, call R&R Heating & Air Conditioning at 208.765.9355 or visit www.randrheating.com.

ACTIVITIES AND FUN
HELP WANTED
A sign was hung in an office window. It read: Help wanted. Must type 70 words a minute. Must be computer literate. Must be bilingual. An equal opportunity employer.
A dog was ambling down the street and saw the sign. He looked at it for a moment, pulled it down with his mouth, and walked into the manager’s office, making it clear he wished to apply for the job. The office manager laughed and said, “I can’t hire a dog for this job.” The dog pointed to the line: “An equal opportunity employer.” So the manager said, “OK, take this letter and type it.” The dog went off to the word processor and returned a minute later with the finished letter, perfectly formatted. The manager said, “Alright, here’s a problem. Write a computer program for it and run it.” Fifteen minutes later, the dog came back with the correct answer. The manager still wasn’t convinced. “I still can’t hire you for this position. You’ve got to be bilingual.” The dog looked up at the manager and said, “Meow.”
BEWARE OF DOG
Upon entering a little country store, the stranger noticed a sign warning, “Danger! Beware of dog!” posted on the glass door. Inside, he noticed a harmless old hound dog asleep on the floor beside the cash register. “Is that the dog folks are supposed to beware of?” he asked the owner. “Yep, that’s him,” came the reply.
THE LUCKY SAUCER
A famous art collector is walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store and he does a double take. He knows that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable, so he walks casually into the store and offers to buy the cat for two dollars. The store owner replies, “I’m sorry, but the cat isn’t for sale. The collector says, “Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to catch mice. I’ll pay you twenty dollars for that cat.” And the owner says “Sold,” and hands over the cat. The collector continues, “Hey, for the twenty bucks I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer. The cat’s used to it and it’ll save me from having to get a dish.” To which the owner says, “Sorry buddy, but that’s my lucky saucer. So far this week I’ve sold sixty-eight cats.”
DALMATION
Sunday School helper was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children began discussing the dog’s duties. “They use him to keep crowds back,” said one youngster. “No,” said another, “he’s just for good luck.” A third child brought the argument to a close. “They use the dogs,” she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrant.”
BEAR ALERT
The California State Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen and golfers to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the Yosemite and Mammoth areas.
The stranger couldn’t help but be amused. “That certainly doesn’t look like a dangerous dog to me. Why in the world would you post that sign?”
They advise people to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert but not startle the bear unexpectedly. They also advise carrying pepper spray in case of an encounter with a bear.
“Because,” the owner explained, “Before I posted that sign, people kept tripping over him.”
It is also a good idea to watch for fresh signs of bear activity and know the difference between black bear and grizzly bear droppings. Black bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly squirrel fur. Grizzly bear droppings have little bells in them and smell like pepper spray.
