Summertime in Gig Harbor
Summertime in Gig Harbor is a picturesque blend of natural beauty and vibrant community activities. Nestled along the waterfront, the town comes alive with outdoor adventures and family friendly events. Warm, sunny days invite residents and visitors to kayak, canoe, paddleboard, boat and fish in the Puget Sound. Local parks for families are in abundance, and there’s always a local hike to take in the scenery. The downtown waterfront, and surrounding areas, buzz with local activities, events and farmers markets. Café and restaurant seating spills outdoors for diners to take in and enjoy dining al fresco. As the sun sets, the sky paints a breathtaking backdrop, perfect for evening strolls, whether along the waterfront or in your own neighborhood.
In our summer edition of Gig Harbor Living Local, find seasonal activities, local events, the best places to dine, shop and explore, and a whole lot more!
We also put the spotlight on several local businesses in this issue. Those looking for a trusted Realtor® are
in good hands with Mel Santos, owner and designated Broker of United Real Estate Puget Sound West, or Paige Schulte, founder and Realtor® at Team Schulte & Co. For those artists and art lovers, Ebb Tide Gallery celebrates its 40-year anniversary enriching the community’s cultural landscape. And be sure to join Peninsula Art League and PenMet Parks as they unite for the 38th annual Summer Art Festival at Sehmel Homestead Park July 20 and 21. Earlier this year, Gig Harbor welcomed a new business and service here in town ... All Black Limo, an upscale driving service that adds a touch of elegance and convenience no matter your travel destination.
There’s no time like summertime to rediscover all that makes this maritime city so special.

Team Schulte & Co.
Real estate experts Paige Schulte and Ed Aro unite to provide unparalleled services
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
Paige Schulte and her family of five were eager for a new chapter. Following the sale of her business, they made the move to the picturesque town of Gig Harbor, drawn by its small-town feel and postcard views. Since 2017, Paige has been wholeheartedly committed to her role as a Realtor®. Then, in 2022, she branched off to establish her boutique firm, Neighborhood Experts, and launched Team Schulte & Co. & Neighborhood Experts Real Estate. This full-service boutique concierge firm offers a comprehensive range of services, from cleaning and staging to cutting-edge media packages for client listings, as well as storage solutions, designer consultations and contractor coordination. They truly manage every aspect of the process.
The number one real estate team in the Gig Harbor market, and Paige the top agent in Gig Harbor for three years running, Team Schulte & Co. recently welcomed renowned real estate expert Ed Aro, who now leads their New Construction and Land Division.
With a renowned 33-year career in the industry, Ed transitioned from Windermere Professional Partners to announce his move to Team Schulte & Co., alongside Neighborhood Experts. By leveraging Ed’s extensive industry knowledge and Paige’s proven track record in marketing, the firm aims to provide unparalleled service and drive exceptional results for clients across the South Sound in new construction, land acquisition and resale.
"I am just so excited to join Paige on this new chapter with her team," Ed expresses. "Joining forces with Paige and her dynamic team presents a great opportunity to elevate our marketing services and expand our offerings to the builders we already work with. Together, we aim to redefine excellence in the real estate industry and bring more new homes to buyers."
Paige, who is recognized for her exceptional marketing strategies and record-breaking sales achievements, shares Ed’s enthusiasm for the collaboration. "Ed brings a wealth of experience and insight that perfectly complements our team's strengths," she says. "His expertise in new construction and land transactions will enhance our ability to deliver comprehensive solutions tailored to builders' needs."
Team Schulte & Co. prides itself as an office that is incredibly driven, hands-on and hyper-focused when it comes to working for their clients. “Geographically, Gig Harbor is our ‘zone of happiness,’ and we focus on knowing every inch of land and every business owner so that buyers can feel comfortable moving here and feeling connected to their community
faster,” Paige affirms. “For buyers, we are like stealthy home-finding ninjas. For sellers, we are like fairy godmothers of real estate services when we bring a home to market. For builders, we combine the two, land miner plus marketing ninjas, to get new plats sold faster.”
Paige’s passion isn’t only that of marketing but giving back, and this business allows her to do both. Prior to establishing Team Schulte & Co., Paige founded The Chelsea Paige Foundation as a way to fund passion projects within schools and is now self-funded by Team Schulte & Co. They work with local schools to bring hands-on education and learning opportunities like theater programs, music and assemblies. Team Schulte & Co. is also a huge supporter of Raising Girls, Food Backpacks 4 Kids, Ali’s Prom Project and all the local boosters and parent organizations.
“Our goal is to inspire other business owners to find ways to collaborate, donate, and uplift our local nonprofits,” Paige remarks. “We want to be the one the community calls when you need help — with your nonprofit, with real estate needs or with business support. As an entrepreneur, collaboration is an inspiration.”
Those looking to buy or sell in Gig Harbor, Paige welcomes you home with Team Schulte & Co.

HOMEBUYERS
Navigating the Homebuying Journey with Confidence
To set yourself up for success when buying a new home, start by defining your needs, preferences and budget clearly. Research neighborhoods, schools, amenities and property values to narrow down your options effectively. Get pre-approved for a mortgage to strengthen your offer and streamline the buying process. Partner with a knowledgeable and reputable real estate agent who understands your goals and advocates for your best interests. Attend open houses and schedule private viewings to assess properties thoroughly. Conduct thorough inspections and consider potential resale value. Stay organized, patient and flexible throughout the process, understanding that finding the perfect home may take time. Lastly, trust your instincts and don’t settle for a property that doesn’t meet your criteria. With careful planning, diligence and guidance from professionals, you can navigate the homebuying journey confidently and achieve your homeownership goals.
Why Seeing a Home in Person Matters
In today’s digital age, virtual tours and online listings offer convenience, but nothing beats experiencing a home in person before making an offer. Visiting a property allows you to assess its true condition, ambiance and neighborhood vibe firsthand. You can gauge factors like natural light, room sizes and overall layout that might not translate accurately in photos or videos. Additionally, being physically present enables you to ask questions, address concerns and envision yourself living in the space. By taking the time to tour a home in person, you can make a more informed decision, ensuring that it meets your needs and preferences before committing to a purchase. It’s a vital step in the home-buying process that can ultimately save you time, money and disappointment down the road.

Prime Time for Homebuyers
Buying a house presents numerous advantages for prospective homeowners.
In the summer of 2024, buying a house presents numerous advantages for prospective homeowners. Firstly, the warmer months often coincide with increased inventory and market activity, providing buyers with a wider selection of properties to choose from. Additionally, favorable weather conditions make it easier to conduct home inspections and assess outdoor features such as landscaping and curb appeal. Moreover, historically low mortgage rates continue to offer favorable financing options for buyers, maximizing affordability. With longer daylight hours and a sense of optimism in the air, now is an opportune time for buyers to make their move into homeownership, capitalizing on favorable market conditions and ample choices.
Updated Windows Bring Value Beyond Aesthetics
When hunting for a new home, don’t overlook the significance of updated windows. While they contribute to the home’s visual appeal, their benefits extend far beyond mere aesthetics. Modern windows offer superior insulation, sealing out drafts and maintaining a comfortable interior climate year-round. This not only enhances your living experience but also leads to noticeable savings on heating and cooling bills. Additionally, energy-efficient windows often come with features like UV protection and sound insulation, adding further value to your investment. When evaluating potential properties, prioritize those with updated windows to ensure long-term comfort, energy efficiency and cost savings. Remember, the benefits of updated windows extend well beyond initial impressions; they are a crucial component of a home’s functionality and financial value.

Assessing your financial situation and future plans can help you determine the optimal timing for your home purchase.
Timing is Everything
While buying a home is an exciting milestone, there are instances when it might not be the best time for you to take the plunge. Financial instability, such as a low credit score or high debt-toincome ratio, can hinder your ability to secure a favorable mortgage rate or afford monthly payments. Additionally, if you anticipate a major life change, such as a career move or starting a family, it may be wise to wait until your circumstances stabilize. Market conditions, such as inflated housing prices or limited inventory, can also make it challenging to find a suitable property within your budget. Taking the time to assess your financial situation and future plans can help you determine the optimal timing for your home purchase.

Summer Selling:
Making
Moves in the Sun
Selling your house during the summer months brings a host of benefits in today’s dynamic real estate market. With longer days and sunny skies, your property shines, attracting more eager buyers. Summer’s bustling activity and heightened demand often lead to faster sales and competitive offers, helping you secure a favorable deal. Families, in particular, are keen to settle before the new school year, expanding your potential buyer pool. Furthermore, persistently low housing inventory levels drive up prices, offering sellers the chance to maximize their returns. Don’t miss out on this prime selling season — leverage these summer months to showcase your home and achieve a successful sale.

Successful Strategies for Selling Your Home
To set yourself up for success when selling your home, start by preparing your property to make a lasting impression. Declutter, depersonalize and stage your home to showcase its full potential and appeal to potential buyers. Work with a reputable real estate agent who understands the local market and can develop a tailored marketing strategy to attract qualified buyers. Price your home competitively based on comparable sales and current market conditions to generate interest and offers. Maximize curb appeal to create a positive first impression and consider making minor repairs or updates to enhance the overall appeal. Be flexible and responsive to buyer feedback and offers, and maintain open communication with your agent throughout the selling process. By taking these proactive steps and leveraging the expertise of professionals, you can increase your chances of selling your home quickly and for the best possible price.

Hot Home Features That Make
a Cool Impression!
When selling your home during the warmer months, accentuate special touches like outdoor fans, air conditioning, sprinkler systems, ceiling fans and strategic window shades. These features enhance comfort, showcasing your property as a sanctuary from the heat. Outdoor fans on covered decks create inviting spaces for relaxation and entertainment, while interior ceiling fans maintain airflow. Highlighting air conditioning and efficient windows communicates temperature control and energy savings. A sprinkler system signals low-maintenance landscaping, while window shades balance natural light and heat. By emphasizing these details, you not only elevate your home’s appeal but also demonstrate thoughtful design, enhancing its desirability during the summer market.

Essential Summer Tips: Highlight Your Home’s Outdoor Amenities
Highlighting a home’s outdoor amenities, such as patios and decks, pools and garden areas, as well as scenic views, is pivotal in portraying its potential for enjoyable summer living to prospective buyers. These features extend living space, providing areas for relaxation, entertainment and recreation during warm months. Patios and pools offer venues for outdoor gatherings and leisure activities, while well-maintained garden areas enhance aesthetics and tranquility. Scenic views contribute to ambiance and serenity, enriching the overall living experience. By showcasing these outdoor amenities, sellers effectively communicate the lifestyle opportunities the property affords, appealing to buyers seeking a harmonious blend of indoor comfort and outdoor enjoyment during the summer season.

Buying Before Selling
Buying a house before selling yours offers advantages with strategic planning. Explore bridge loans or home equity lines of credit to cover the down payment. Negotiate a rent-back agreement with the seller for extra time to sell your current home. Work closely with a real estate agent for expert guidance. Maximize your market appeal by preparing your current home for sale. This approach allows you to secure your new home without the pressure of timing the sale of your current property. You can take advantage of favorable market conditions and potentially avoid temporary housing arrangements. With careful financial planning and support from professionals, buying before selling can be a successful strategy.

WHERE CREATIVITY MEETS COMMUNITY
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
Ebb Tide Gallery Artist Cooperative, the longest-running art gallery in Gig Harbor, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Founded in 1984 in the Finholm District, the gallery later moved to Harborview Drive before settling at its current location, 7809 Pioneer Way, about 15 years ago. As a vibrant co-op, staffed only by local artists, Ebb Tide Gallery is dedicated to enriching the community’s cultural landscape by showcasing a diverse array of fine art in various mediums.
Plein Aire artist Cathie Johnson, a long-time member of the gallery, highlights the eclectic mix of artwork available. “The type of work varies from super realistic to impressionistic and even abstract, with media ranging from oils, mixed media, clay, woodworking, scratchboard, photography and watercolors. Each artist puts their own spin on their chosen medium, making the gallery a treasure trove for all types of collectors,” she says.
Following the closure of Gallery Row in January, two of its prominent artists, Lea Basile-Lazarus and Josi Callan, joined Ebb Tide. Josi, who brings a wealth of experience as a museum director, curator and artist, expresses her enthusiasm for the gallery’s collaborative environment. “I joined Ebb Tide Gallery largely because of the camaraderie among the artists and the value they place on community and enhancing the arts in Gig Harbor. My role is to help realize that vision,” she shares. Josi’s work, inspired by nature, includes oils, watercolors and printmaking.
Lea, who has a rich background in teaching art, is equally passionate about her involvement with the gallery. “Being part of a cooperative gallery is very appealing to me. I enjoy the camaraderie of being around other artists, interacting with clients, and discussing positive ways to display and sell our work,” Lea explains. Her dedication to education and collaboration enriches the gallery’s dynamic atmosphere.
Ebb Tide Gallery boasts an impressive roster of artists, including potters Valorie Smith and Becky Horkan, oil painter Christopher Cook, watercolor and pen and ink artist Jennifer Appleby, photographers Todd Moses and Chuck Flewelling, Chinese ink and watercolor artist Kathy Thurston, mixed media artist Elaine Fister Erickson, woodworker Dale McDaniels, scratchboard artist Steve Hammond, and painter, photographer and woodworker Bill Wachtler. Each artist contributes their unique perspective, making the gallery a cornerstone of Gig Harbor’s artistic community.
In March 2023, Ebb Tide Gallery played a pivotal role in reviving the ArtWalk, with plans to continue this tradition on the first Saturday of each month throughout 2024. This initiative, led by Josi, Lea, Steve and Bill, underscores the gallery’s commitment to fostering community engagement through art.
To commemorate its 40th anniversary, Ebb Tide Gallery unveiled a new logo. Bill explains, “Our new logo, featuring a striking blue cresting wave forming the lowercase ‘e,’ symbolizes our enduring commitment to artistic excellence and our deep-rooted connection to Gig Harbor’s nautical heritage. It embodies the essence of our gallery as a dynamic hub where creativity crests and breaks like waves upon the shore.”
As Ebb Tide Gallery celebrates this milestone, it continues to be a beacon of creativity and community spirit in Gig Harbor, enriching the lives of art lovers and supporting local artists.

Conquer
Waves
Dragon boats have really surged in popularity over the last few decades. Consequently their teams of enthusiasts can be found all over the world! Our corner of the Pacific Northwest is no different. Dragons are alive and thriving here on the downtown Gig Harbor waterfront.
Dragon boating has a fascinating ancient Chinese history. Legend goes that Qu Yuan was falsely accused of treason, and in his despair (after years of exile) over the loss of his country, he threw himself in the river. The Dragon Boat Festival and Races commemorate and honor the frantic paddling of the
people to save Qu Yuan from his fate, and as such have deep roots in tradition, culture and teamwork.
It’s natural, then, that at the heart of the local Gig Harbor Dragon Boat Club is a thriving social network. They usually gather after practices (held four times weekly) for food and drinks, and hold several parties and friendly tournaments throughout the year. The Dragon boaters are “in the water, through the water and out of the water together,” says Coach Anita Jones.
This year’s paddle sports competition season started in May

and continues until October, during which time the team participates in five or six competitions both locally and along the coast up into British Columbia. In preparation for the season’s competitions, team practices are held year-round. With all that training and exercise, it’s not necessary that interested participants be trained and in perfect shape. The team will work with members to create a cohesive unit, and in time, with practice, individual strengths are honed.
Dragon boating strengthens the body and the mind, and brings about a greater cohesion with the community — resulting in a greater version of self.
The Gig Harbor Dragon Boat Club is comprised of 100 members, and it’s possible they might have new openings come the fall. If interested in registering, email GigHarborNewPaddlers@gmail.com. A committee member will respond within a few days to answer any questions you might have and arrange an orientation. Once you’ve been contacted, you can then expect to go through orientation, discuss equipment, attend a practice, and pay member dues. Member dues are $200 annually, but if involved with another club, an associate member rate is available. There are other costs, such as cost of additional equipment, a jersey, and any travel fees. But all in all, it’s affordable, open and accessible for newcomers.
If you’re someone looking for an active social network that fuels fitness and wellness, Dragon boating may just be the thing for you! To find out more, visit GigHarborDragons.com.

CELEBRATE MARINE FUN FOR ALL AGES
Harbor WildWatch, the host of the ever popular “Pier into the Night,” celebrated the grand opening of the Marine Life Center as of February of this year. Previously known only as the Skansie Visitor and Interpretive Center, the environmental education association has re-opened with a few important changes. Firstly, Harbor WildWatch’s lease has been increased to 20 years. Secondly, the visitor center requirements were removed. This means that admission is always free!
Harbor WildWatch functions as an environmental education program meant to inspire stewardship of the Salish Sea through education and environmental monitoring. They offer a variety
of programs meant to instill a spirit of wonder for the beauty of our local marine biodiversity — which in turn creates a sense of ownership and appreciation for how we can best prolong the good health of our sea life. Harbor WildWatch partners with us to bring about the conservation of everything that makes the Salish Sea a beautiful place to live.
Harbor WildWatch offers numerous field activities, available to those interested in hands-on learning. Real Estate Inventory has Doubled!
What does that mean for you?
Gig Harbor’s spring inventory went from a staggering .9 to 1.9 months of supply! Inventory has been a topic of conversation for the last three years, with our absorption level rarely getting above a one-month of supply to the ever-growing population of savvy consumers.
We are pleased to report that our recent statistics show we are entering our busy summer season with double our accustomed amount sitting nicely, with about two months’ worth of inventory.
by J ENNIFER
More inventory must equal price drops you may think …
Our Gig Harbor real estate market is proving to be resilient of the national woes. Reports of:
1. Slowing markets
2. Raising interest rates
3. Dropping prices
4. Continued limited inventory
This equals both unhappy buyers and sellers.
Here locally, however, we are experiencing most of those trends — except our prices increased 9 percent year-to-date. We are entering our busy season, and the prices have continued to hold firm despite the listed-above turbulence.
If your home is your largest asset (for 90 percent of Americans it is), then don’t worry; your equity is sitting safely and securely.
As the boomers continue to age gracefully, we are seeing more and more getting out from under their large family homes and easing into the comfort of a condo lifestyle or finally taking the leap down South for a sizzling snowbird season. What this doubling of inventory allows is for the boomers to get some options that will finally entice movement.
So, what is an absorption rate, and what exactly does it mean to have a month or two of supply?
Let’s break that down. The absorption rate measures how quickly houses are sold. Put simply, the absorption rate is a measure of supply and demand. By taking the number of homes sold in a month and dividing it by the number on the market, you can find a percentage that determines just how quickly a home will sell. So, saying we have less than two months of inventory simply means if you wait 30 to 40 days for the home of your dreams, it will be gone.
Bringing this full circle, we are grateful our special community has shown resilience, and our equity is continuing to be protected. Our local legislature is now testing the waters with new regulations on short-term rentals, so watching that unfold
will certainly be a telling tale as to whether we will get some of that inventory added back to our supply — or will the short-term housing trend continue? In our quaint tourist town, we certainly do have a need to short-term rentals still hitting some of the lists of:
1. Best place to retire
2. Top places to raise a family
3. Pierce County being more affordable than King
Bringing more and more visitors and consumers to see just what it is we have been keeping a secret down here in the South Sound.

Understanding retirement assets in a divorce
by FELICIA SOLEIL, DIVORCE MEDIATOR & FAMILY LAW ATTORNEY, FAMILY LAW RESOLUTIONS
As a divorce lawyer and mediator, the most frequently disputed assets among clients are retirement accounts and pension benefits. Not only do parties usually not understand what they have, they don’t know how a divorce impacts those benefits.
I often hear, “I’ll just keep my retirement and we’ll split the other assets,” or “I’ll let her have the house if she doesn’t touch my pension.” This can be an expensive mistake for the spouse with little or no retirement accounts of their own.
The most common forms of retirement benefits are:
1. Deferred Compensation Account: These are employmentrelated accounts such as a 401(k), 403(b), an IRA or a Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) into which you contribute a percentage of your income each month and to which your employer may offer a matching contribution. If you leave your employer, you can take these accounts with you, including the company’s contributions.
2. Defined Benefit Account: These are pensions or annuities offered as part of an employment benefits package, usually with government jobs, very large companies, or unions. Some plans include contributions from the employee while others are fully funded by the employer. These plans do not pay out until you have vested in the plan and have met that plan’s eligibility criteria for retirement.
Valuing a deferred compensation account is easy. The value is the account balance at the time of separation or divorce. If a spouse is awarded a share of the employee’s deferred compensation account, a separate court order (called a QDRO) will be used to transfer the former spouse’s interest into a separate account upon divorce.
On the other hand, most pension plans will only provide an estimate of the monthly pension benefit earned during the marriage. Because most parties do not have sufficient assets to buy out a former spouse’s interest in such a pension plan, the standard practice is to secure the former spouse’s interest using a percentage of the future monthly payments as part of the property settlement. This preserves the former spouse’s right to receive their share of the monthly payments upon the employee spouse retiring, even if retirement won’t occur for several years.
Both of these retirement benefits can be valuable marital assets, providing important sources of financial security for your future, particularly when coming out of a long-term marriage, and should be thoroughly evaluated with the help of a professional.
Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential and currently conducted by appointment via Zoom or phone.
Not only do parties usually not understand what they have, they don’t know how a divorce impacts those benefits.

Implant-Supported Dentures
A Modern Solution for Tooth Replacement
courtesy of DR. RHONDA SAVAGE, UPTOWN DENTAL & WELLNESS CENTER
Implant-supported dentures offer a revolutionary solution for individuals seeking stable and reliable tooth-replacement options. Whether it’s a fully fixed “All on Four” denture or a removable one, these innovative dental prosthetics provide enhanced functionality and aesthetics compared to traditional dentures. Let’s delve into the intricacies of implant-supported dentures, from their placement to maintenance.
Implant-supported dentures involve the surgical placement of dental implants, typically by specialists such as periodontists, oral surgeons, or general dentists who have significant training and years of continuing education. These implants serve as anchors for the dentures, providing unparalleled stability and support. The process begins with a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s oral health and bone structure to determine the optimal implant placement.
Once the implants are securely in place, the restoration process commences. The creation of the implant-supported denture, or partial denture, or custom porcelain crowns/bridges, is typically restored by a talented, highly educated general dentist or a prosthodontist, customizing the dentures to fit the patient’s unique oral anatomy. Advanced materials and techniques are employed to create natural-looking prosthetics that blend seamlessly with the remaining teeth, if any, and facial features.
Implant-supported dentures offer several advantages over traditional dentures.
Implant-supported dentures offer several advantages over traditional dentures. They eliminate issues commonly associated with traditional dentures, such as slipping, discomfort and difficulty chewing. Patients can enjoy a varied diet and speak confidently without worrying about denture movement. Moreover, implant-supported dentures promote better oral health by preventing bone loss and preserving facial structure.
Apart from full dentures, dental implants can also be used to replace single or multiple missing teeth with implant-supported fixed bridges. However, like natural teeth, implants are not immune to complications. Excessive bite pressure, uncontrolled
periodontal disease or nearby infections can lead to implant failure. Regular dental check-ups and proper oral hygiene are essential for maintaining the longevity of implant-supported dentures.
Implant-supported dentures represent a significant advancement in modern dentistry, offering patients a durable, natural-looking and functional toothreplacement solution. With meticulous planning, expert placement and skilled restoration, implant supported dentures can restore smiles and confidence for individuals with missing teeth. However, diligent oral care and routine dental visits are imperative to ensure the longevity and success of these innovative dental prosthetics.

Three Keys to More Successful Investing
A successful investor maximizes gain and minimizes loss
article Courtesy of NANCY HARRIS, CMFC, CDFA PRESIDENT, LPL FINANCIAL PLANNER, NEW FOUNDATION WEALTH GROUP
Though there can be no guarantee that any investment strategy will be successful, and all investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal, here are basic principles that may help you invest more successfully.
Compounding
Put simply, compounding pays you earnings on your reinvested earnings. The longer you leave your money at work for you, the more exciting the numbers get. For example, imagine an investment of $10,000 at an annual rate of return of 8 percent. In 20 years, assuming no withdrawals, your $10,000 investment would grow to $46,610. In 25 years, it would grow to $68,485, a 47 percent gain over the 20-year figure. After 30 years, your account would total $100,627. (Of course, this is a hypothetical example that does not reflect the performance of any specific investment.)
This simple example also assumes that no taxes are paid along the way, so all money stays invested. That would be the case in a tax-deferred individual retirement account or qualified retirement plan.
While you should review your portfolio on a regular basis, the point is that money left alone in an investment offers the potential of a significant return over time. With time on your side, you don't have to go for investment "home runs" in order to be successful.
Asset allocation
Asset allocation is the process by which you spread your dollars over several categories of investments, usually referred to as asset classes. The three most common asset classes are stocks, bonds, and cash or cash alternatives such as money market funds. A basic asset allocation would likely include at least stocks, bonds (or mutual funds of stocks and bonds), and cash or cash alternatives.
There are two main reasons why asset allocation is important. First, the mix of asset classes you own is a large factor in determining your overall investment portfolio performance. In other words, the basic decision about how to divide your money between stocks, bonds and cash can be more important than your subsequent choice of specific investments.
Second, by dividing your investment dollars among asset classes that do not respond to the same market forces in the same way at the same time, you can help minimize the effects of market volatility while maximizing your chances of return in the long term.
Dollar cost averaging
Dollar cost averaging is systematically purchasing a fixed dollar amount at regularly scheduled intervals over an extended time. When the price is high, your fixed-dollar investment buys less; when prices are low, the same dollar investment will buy more shares. A regular, fixed-dollar investment should result in a lower average price per share
than you would get buying a fixed number of shares at each investment interval.
Remember that, just as with any investment strategy, dollar cost averaging can't guarantee you a profit or protect you against a loss if the market is declining. To maximize the potential effects of dollar cost averaging, you should also assess your ability to keep investing even when the market is down.

Gary Parker’s BBQ2U: A recipe for community engagement
by PAIGE SCHULTE
In the bustling landscape of business, where profits often take precedence, it’s refreshing to encounter individuals like Gary Parker, owner of BBQ2U, who go above and beyond in giving back to their community. Gary isn’t just serving up delicious Texas barbecue; he’s also dishing out generosity and goodwill, setting a remarkable example for businesses everywhere.
At BBQ2U, it’s not just about the savory ribs or the smoky pulled pork. It’s about fostering a sense of community, about ensuring that everyone feels the warmth of belonging. Gary’s commitment to community engagement isn’t a mere marketing tactic; it’s a genuine reflection of his values and his desire to make a positive impact.
Located in the Uptown area of Gig Harbor, BBQ2U is known by locals as “the place” to go for authentic Texas barbecue. Gary grew up in Texas and relocated to Gig Harbor after retiring from Intel Corp. The menu includes Southern-style pork ribs, beef brisket, incredible sides, and more. In addition to amazing food, the staff is friendly and kind.
Inspired by his grandma, who gave back relentlessly, Gary is known for saying “Yes” to our area seniors, youth and local authors — not only giving monetarily by sponsoring events but hosting community-building events. He hosts weekly movie nights for seniors at the local theater, Bingo at his restaurant, and brings in local authors to sell their books at no charge. You’ll see him at City Council meetings advocating for different groups and providing valuable input. Gary recently launched
his own nonprofit and seeks to continue doing great things for our city. BBQ2U is always at the forefront of community initiatives. During the COVID era, Gary was one of the first to start delivering food to the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation that supported seniors who needed an extra hand. He understands that businesses have a responsibility beyond profit margins —they have a duty to uplift and support the communities that sustain them.
His dedication to giving back serves as a reminder that businesses have the power to be forces for good, capable of effecting positive change in the world around them. Gary has shown up consistently, and his customers see that too. He has been named Citizen of the Year by the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce and, more recently, South Sound’s Citizen of the Year.
As Gary continues championing community engagement through BBQ2U, he hopes to inspire other businesses to follow suit. After all, the recipe for success isn’t just about profit margins and market share — it’s also about the lives you touch and the communities you uplift. Gary’s BBQ2U isn’t just about serving barbecue; it’s about serving the greater good. And in doing so, he’s proving that the most flavorful businesses are those seasoned with compassion and generosity.

Stay cool and chic with these essential summer wardrobe tips
As the temperature rises and the sun shines brighter, it’s time to revamp your wardrobe and embrace the season’s hottest trends. From breezy fabrics to vibrant colors, summer style offers endless opportunities to express yourself with flair and confidence. Here are your top five style tips to help you navigate the summer months in fashion-forward elegance, ensuring you stay cool, comfortable and effortlessly chic no matter the occasion.
Light and Breathable Fabrics: Opt for clothing made from lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen or chambray to stay cool and comfortable in the summer heat. These materials allow air to circulate, preventing overheating and ensuring you feel fresh all day long.
Embrace Bright Colors and Patterns: Add a pop of color to your summer wardrobe with vibrant hues and playful patterns. Experiment with bold prints, tropical motifs or cheerful florals to capture the essence of the season and express your personal style with confidence.
Invest in Versatile Summer Essentials: Build a versatile summer wardrobe by investing in key pieces that can easily mix and match for various occasions. Consider staple items like a breezy sundress, comfortable shorts, stylish sandals and a lightweight denim jacket for effortless style transitions from day to night.
Accessorize Wisely: Elevate your summer outfits with the right accessories to add flair and personality to your look. Choose accessories like statement sunglasses, woven straw hats, colorful scarves or lightweight scarves to complement your ensemble and protect yourself from the sun’s rays in style.
Stay Cool with Breathable Footwear: Keep your feet happy and comfortable during the summer months by opting for breathable footwear options. Choose sandals, espadrilles, or canvas sneakers with open designs and cushioned soles to provide ample support while allowing your feet to breathe in hot weather conditions.

Gig Harbor welcomes its newest attraction: The Harbor WildWatch Marine Life Center
courtesy of HARBOR WILDWATCH
estled along the picturesque waterfront, the Harbor WildWatch Marine Life Center has breathed new life into a historic building, becoming Gig Harbor’s latest attraction. Opened earlier this year with support from the City of Gig Harbor, the Gig Harbor Waterfront Alliance and the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce, this nonprofit venture builds on a decade of success. Previously, Harbor WildWatch operated the Skansie Visitor & Interpretive Center since 2014, welcoming over 70,000 visitors — including the Prime Minister of Croatia — for visitor information, maps and a side of environmental education. With recent changes in the City’s Tourism Department, Harbor WildWatch renegotiated its lease in late 2023 to become the building’s sole occupant, marking a new era in access to local marine education.
The Marine Life Center offers an immersive experience for both residents and visitors of the Maritime City. It features over 600 gallons of aquatic habitats showcasing diverse marine creatures, from sea stars to shiner perch. The star attraction is “Pancake,” a Pacific Red Octopus residing in a 300-gallon aquarium, mesmerizing guests with his dynamic color and texture changes. Beyond live exhibits, the center includes animal skulls, specimens, a microscope station, marine life videos and special events, ensuring a fresh experience for every season.

the project’s community impact: “This opening of this facility not only advances our mission of inspiring stewardship for the Salish Sea but also creates an inclusive space for learning and discovery for residents and visitors alike.”
Under Harbor WildWatch’s leadership, the center is poised to become a bustling hub along the waterfront corridor. Rotating exhibits and interactive displays aim to engage visitors of all ages, fostering a deeper appreciation for Gig Harbor’s marine ecosystems. Additionally, with extended winter and evening hours, the center will draw people downtown to learn, play, shop and dine, even in quieter seasons.
Mayor Tracey Markley reflects on the center’s significance: “This transformation demonstrates Gig Harbor’s commitment to education and environmental care. It not only enriches our community’s understanding of local wildlife but also boosts economic activity by attracting more visitors to this unique attraction.”
The Harbor WildWatch Marine Life Center invites you to experience its wonders Wednesday through Sunday, from 11 am to 6 pm. DISCOVER THE POWER OF NATURAL TECHNIQUES FOR HORMONAL BALANCE
by DREW JOHNSON
68
Hormones are the chemical messengers that orchestrate numerous physiological processes in our bodies, influencing everything from mood and metabolism to reproduction and growth. Achieving hormonal balance is crucial for overall health and well-being, yet many individuals struggle with hormonal imbalances at various stages of life. While conventional medical treatments exist, a growing number of people are turning to holistic approaches to restore equilibrium to their hormonal systems. It’s time to explore holistic methods for balancing hormones in both men and women.
Understanding Hormonal Imbalance
Hormonal imbalance occurs when there’s either too much or too little of a particular hormone circulating in the body. This imbalance can lead to a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, weight gain or loss, mood swings, irregular menstruation, decreased libido, and more. Factors such as stress, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, environmental toxins and aging can all contribute to hormonal disruptions.
Holistic Approaches for Hormonal Balance
Diet and Nutrition: A cornerstone of holistic hormone balance is adopting a diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods. Focus on consuming plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. Consider making modifications to your diet to incorporate foods that support hormone production and metabolism, such as cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale), fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), nuts and seeds, fiber (fortified cereals, oats, chia seeds) and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (flaxseeds, chia seeds).
Stress Management: Chronic stress can disrupt hormone levels, particularly cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Practicing stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises and spending time in nature can help lower cortisol levels and promote hormonal balance.
Regular Exercise: Physical activity is essential for maintaining healthy hormone levels. Aim for a combination of cardiovascular exercise, strength training and flexibility exercises to support overall well-being. Exercise helps regulate insulin levels, reduce inflammation and promote the release of endorphins, which can positively impact hormone balance.
Adequate Sleep: Sleep plays a vital role in hormone regulation, with disruptions in sleep patterns often leading to hormonal imbalances. For proper sleep hygiene, aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night to support hormone production, repair and rejuvenation. Establish a regular sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime routine and optimize your sleep environment for restful slumber.
Herbal Remedies and Supplements: Certain herbs and supplements have been used for centuries to promote hormonal balance. Examples include:
• Adaptogens: Herbs like ashwagandha, rhodiola and holy basil help the body adapt to stress and support overall hormonal health.
• Vitex: Also known as chasteberry, vitex is commonly used to regulate menstrual cycles and alleviate symptoms of PMS.
Alleviate More than Stress with Massage
Therapy
Massage therapy offers more than just relaxation — it can also play a role in balancing hormones. Through various techniques, massage stimulates the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, reducing cortisol levels and promoting the release of feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine. This can help alleviate stress and anxiety, which are common contributors to hormonal imbalances. Additionally, massage may directly target specific hormone-regulating glands, such as the pituitary gland, promoting better hormone production and regulation throughout the body.
69
• Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and support hormonal balance.
• Magnesium: This essential mineral plays a crucial role in hormone production and may help alleviate symptoms of PMS and menopause.
Hormone Testing and Monitoring: For those experiencing persistent symptoms of hormonal imbalance, hormone testing can provide valuable insights into specific hormone levels and imbalances. This information allows individuals to tailor their holistic approach to address their unique hormonal needs effectively.
Balancing hormones is essential for optimal health and well-being, and holistic approaches offer a natural and effective way to achieve hormonal equilibrium. By addressing factors such as diet, stress, exercise, sleep and supplementation, individuals can support their body’s innate ability to balance hormones naturally and promote overall wellness.
FOR PROPER SLEEP HYGIENE, AIM FOR SEVEN TO NINE HOURS OF QUALITY SLEEP PER NIGHT TO SUPPORT HORMONE PRODUCTION, REPAIR AND REJUVENATION.

3 Tips for Shifting a Negative Perspective
1. Reframe.
Summer Fitness Fun
Stay active and energized all season long
Maximize the summer months by staying active outdoors! Swap indoor workouts for activities like beach yoga, paddleboarding, or cycling along scenic trails. Make the most of the longer daylight hours by scheduling early morning or evening workouts to beat the heat. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, and enjoy the natural beauty around you as you prioritize your health and fitness in the great outdoors.
2. Be Curious.
3. Take Action.
Comparison with others keeps us stuck in fear, negative self-talk and unhelpful habits. Instead, ask: 1) What can you learn from someone and how can you apply it in your life? 2) Imagine yourself three years from now and all you have accomplished. Where is there resistance or obstacles to work through? 3) What is one small step you can do, today, toward what you want to do, be or create? Then do it! If you want to shift your mindset from scarcity to empowerment and abundance, then try these three tips.

There are plenty of outdoor spaces and seating areas to relax in, and there is even a fish pond. This locally owned store is dedicated to helping shoppers find quality, educational and age-appropriate toys from their large inventory from around the world.
Book lovers should take a short detour to Invitation Books, a locally owned independent bookstore. All Black Limo
Affordable luxury transportation services in Gig Harbor
by J ILLIAN CHANDLER
After a decade in business serving Seattle and the surrounding areas, Bijo Cherian is thrilled to bring his All Black Limo services right here to Gig Harbor.
Established in 2014, Bijo took the reins as both owner and operator of All Black Limo transportation services. “It's been an incredible decade-long journey since we first opened our doors, and looking back, it's been 10 years filled with growth, learning, and countless memorable experiences with our clients,” he reflects.
In February 2024, Bijo made the strategic decision to relocate their base of operations to Gig Harbor, a move motivated by the realization that Gig Harbor was a growing community in dire need of reliable, affordable transportation options. “Recognizing the potential to serve and make a significant impact in one of the Puget Sound region’s fastest-growing neighborhoods, we saw this as an opportunity not just for business growth but also to contribute positively to the community’s development,” Bijo notes.
Bijo’s journey began as a Lyft driver, a role he embraced wholeheartedly for a year. It was during this time that he gained invaluable experiences while realizing it wasn’t the right fit for him long term. “This realization sparked a curiosity in me to explore other avenues within the transportation sector, leading me to the idea of creating a more personalized and comprehensive airport transfer service. In 2014, with a vision to offer something unique and customer focused, All Black Limo was born,” shares Bijo.
On a more personal note, Bijo shares that his journey from India to the United States at the tender age of 9, followed by his family's successful venture into business in New York, has been a significant part of his narrative. “My experiences, first within my family's business, then with the DOJ and DHS, and later in the airline industry, have all shaped my entrepreneurial spirit. This spirit, combined with a keen desire to serve and make a difference in the transportation industry, led me to establish All Black Limo,” Bijo states.

chauffeurs is a testament to our commitment to not just excellence in service but also to creating meaningful employment opportunities within our community. A special thanks to my initial days with Lyft, which not only helped me identify a gap in the market but also provided the means to venture into this fulfilling journey.”
Today, All Black Limo prides themselves on offering a diverse fleet of vehicles to cater to their clients’ varied needs, including stylish Sedans, spacious SUVs, luxurious limos, and versatile Sprinters. Their services are designed to “add a touch of elegance and convenience to any occasion” — be it airport or cruise transfers, wedding celebrations, birthdays, quinceañeras, prom nights, concerts, sports events, corporate gatherings, or even running the occasional errand. “Our aim is to ensure that every journey with us is not just a trip but a memorable experience,” Bijo adds.
Their dedication — coupled with their commitment to understanding and accommodating their clients’ unique needs — ensures flexible, reliable and seamless service. Additionally, their rides are backed by a comprehensive $1 million liability insurance policy, offering clients peace of mind with every journey.
What truly sets All Black Limo apart is its foundation as a family owned business, which allows them to offer a personal touch and a steadfast commitment to excellence that’s rare to find. Bijo and his team go above and beyond to ensure drivers are not just highly skilled but also share the values of trustworthiness and professionalism. Their vetting process for chauffeurs is rigorous and includes comprehensive background checks and drug tests.
For Bijo, one of the most rewarding aspects of running All Black Limo is the flexibility it affords him and his team, allowing them to break free from the confines of a traditional 9 to 5 schedule. “This flexibility not only enables us to serve our clients more effectively but also contributes to a healthy work-life balance for our team, enhancing overall job satisfaction and well-being.”
As the summer months are sure to be filled with travel, adventure, special occasions and events, let Bijo and All Black Limo take care of all your transportation needs.

PenMet Parks and Peninsula Art League Unite
to Enrich Gig Harbor Peninsula with Art
The 38th annual Summer Art Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever!
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
In an exciting development for the Gig Harbor Peninsula, the Peninsula Art League (PAL) and PenMet Parks have forged a partnership aimed at enhancing recreational and artistic opportunities for the community. This collaboration seeks to blend the beauty of nature with the creativity of art, fostering a vibrant cultural scene while providing enriching experiences for residents and visitors alike.
Ally Bujacich, executive director of PenMet Parks, emphasized the importance of meeting the community's evolving needs by expanding park and recreation offerings, including greater access to art. The alliance with PAL signifies a shared commitment to enriching the lives of residents through art education and engagement.
Peninsula Art League president Colette Smith expressed enthusiasm about partnering with PenMet Parks, recognizing the organization as a vital community asset. “Peninsula Art League is very pleased to collaborate with such a strong community partner to increase opportunities for our community to gather, play and create,” she shares. This collaboration aims to broaden the scope of its art-related activities, offering workshops, events and volunteer opportunities to nurture creativity and foster community connections.
One of the most exciting outcomes of this partnership is the relocation of the annual Summer Art Festival to Sehmel Homestead Park, reflecting the growing scope and popularity of the event. This move to a larger venue enables the festival to accommodate more artists, vendors and attendees, promising an even more vibrant and engaging experience for all.
Scheduled for 10am to 6pm Saturday, July 20, and 10am to 5pm Sunday, July 21, the festival will feature more than 100 artists (featuring paintings, woodwork, pottery, jewelry, fabrics and more!). Enjoy the best of local beer by Gig Harbor Brewing and 7 Seas Brewing in the festival's beer garden and a variety of food vendors including Kettle Korn, Millville Pizza, BBQ2U, Kona Ice, Pink Gorilla and Harbor Haute Dogs. Live entertainment adds to the festive atmosphere with DJ Ice Mike playing a variety of genres, and young live musicians performing during his breaks. There will be a variety of children’s activities like face painting, chalk art, make and take, and glitter tattoos. With an anticipated attendance surpassing last year's 12,000 visitors, the festival promises to be a highlight of the summer calendar, attracting art enthusiasts and families alike.
The appeal of the Summer Art Festival lies not only in its diverse offerings but also in its role as a unifying force within the community — bringing art to the community and fostering connections among artists and residents. Free to all, the festival serves as a celebration of creativity and community spirit, drawing people together in a shared appreciation of art and culture. Proceeds benefit high school scholarships. This year's festival will further its impact by partnering with the Kiwanis Club of Gig Harbor to collect non-perishable food donations for local food banks.
The collaboration between PenMet Parks and Peninsula Art League represents a significant step toward enhancing the cultural vibrancy of the Gig Harbor Peninsula. By joining forces, these organizations are poised to create lasting positive impacts, enriching lives through art, recreation and community engagement. Join them for two days of art in the park and be part of this exciting journey!
There will be free shuttle service from Gig Harbor High School (5101 Rosedale Street NW) and Franciscan Health Medical Pavilion (6401 Kimball Drive) in Gig Harbor.
