s you save for retirement, you’ll want to take full advantage of the investment vehicles available to you — and one of the best is a Roth IRA. But what sets it apart from other accounts? Three key factors distinguish the Roth IRA: • Tax-free earnings: When you invest in a Roth IRA, your earnings can grow tax free, provided you don’t begin taking withdrawals until you’re 59 ½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. If you don’t meet these criteria, withdrawals of earnings will be subject to taxes and a possible 10 percent penalty. • No penalties on withdrawals of contributions: You fund a Roth IRA with after-tax dollars, which means you can withdraw your contributions — not the earnings — at any time for any reason, without facing taxes or penalties. So, you could use some of your Roth IRA money for nonretirement purposes, such as helping pay for a child’s college education. • No required withdrawals at age 73: With a traditional IRA or a 401(k), you must start taking withdrawals — called required minimum distributions, or RMDs — once you reach 73. But this rule doesn’t apply to a Roth IRA — you can keep it intact as long as you like. You may need to tap into it for some of your retirement income, but if you don’t use it all, the remainder could benefit your beneficiaries. A Roth IRA does share one similarity to a traditional IRA: It can be funded with virtually any type of investment, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, certificates of deposit (CDs) and so on.
However, unlike a traditional IRA, a Roth IRA does have income limits. For the 2023 tax year, if your modified adjusted gross income was less than $138,000 (for a single filer) or $218,000 (married filing jointly), you can put in the full amount of $6,500 and an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution if you’re 50 or older. The amounts you can contribute will gradually decline at higher income levels and are phased out entirely at $153,000 for single filers and $228,000 if you’re married and file jointly. These income ranges will likely change for the 2024 tax year, so you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor for details. Still, even if you’ve contributed to a traditional IRA or a 401(k) for many years, you may have a chance to eventually “convert” some, or all, of these funds to a Roth IRA and gain its benefits. It’s not hard to do this conversion — it involves minimal paperwork from your traditional IRA or 401(k) provider — but it does come with tax issues. Any money that’s converted from a traditional IRA or 401(k) to a Roth IRA will be treated as ordinary taxable income. This can trigger a large tax bill, so, unless you have the money available from other accounts to pay the taxes, the conversion may or may not make sense for you. But you don’t have to convert all the funds at once. By spreading the conversion over several years, you could reduce the effect of a large tax hit in any single year. You may want to consult with your tax advisor before converting any funds to a Roth IRA. If you can find a way to contribute to a Roth IRA, either directly or through a conversion, consider it carefully — you’ll find a lot of upsides to this investment account.

Q. For those who don’t already know … who IS Josh Hissong? As a person, a business owner, within his community? A. I am a North Idaho native and currently reside in Spokane. I have many passions, but first and foremost, my 7-year-old son Luca, my heart. I’ve always been a bit of a sojourner. Nowadays, I travel all over the PNW, and a few times a year I travel abroad. Traveling is part meditation and part exploration for me. I love to experience culture, food and architecture wherever I can. Since I was young, I’ve had an affinity for design, which began as a server in restaurants. Not just aesthetic design, but functional design. I could quickly spot and improve the workflow of a restaurant’s back-of-house; occasionally the restaurant manager would give me the reins to make improvements. Years later, that translated into working for designers, owning multiple restaurants, then owning and founding an architecture firm. While working for designers, coupled with my practical knowledge of commercial kitchen workflow, it became apparent to myself and others that I could leverage my talents and passions to benefit restaurateurs and hospitality professionals. In 2006, I started designing commercial kitchens. A few years later, in 2011, I began collaborating with my (now) business partner, architect Armando Hurtado. This put me firmly on the journey of architecture fixation, which includes all facets of architecture and design. If I have downtime, I am probably reading or perusing design magazines, books or websites. My day job is now running an architecture and design firm, HDG Architecture. As a designer and business owner, I strive to create an environment that is inspiring, fun and positive. My co-workers are all incredible at their roles, and all play a part in the growth and success of the firm and its subsidiary companies. My willingness to jump without a parachute has allowed me to seize so many opportunities that have allowed the firm to grow, not just in volume, but into towns and territories that we didn’t intend to reach. It’s been a very organic and unforced process. As a community member, I and HDG give back in ways that benefit numerous nonprofits—both monetarily and through time and effort. I have sat on numerous boards and committees and am currently the host of the community podcast “If not now, when?” The podcast aims to bring together prominent and everyday members of the community to have real conversations about Spokane’s future, with an emphasis on how each of us gets to take part, individually and corporately. Q. Please describe what you provide your clients through HDG? A. HDG provides full-service architecture, design, branding—and really anything that will help a project stay cohesive from start to finish. We have built relationships with many of the great construction companies in the Inland Northwest and beyond. We work with stateof-the-art design software, allowing our clients to walk through their home/condo/commercial space in VR before a hammer is ever swung. This allows them to see and get a feel for every element within the
design. We are hyper intentional about creating an amazing customer experience. Most of our clients have become lifelong friends. This isn’t necessarily part of a stated mission, it’s simply who we are. The human component of what we do is ultimately our biggest motivation. Q. What keeps you inspired in your line of work? A. The number one inspiration for me is and always will be the people that I work with in the office and the clients that are like a second family. Traveling also keeps me invigorated. In Europe, for instance, it’s so compelling to learn about the history of design, and to see in person how design has shaped places that are thousands of years old. For me, work begets inspiration, which begets work. I find inspiration everywhere! Q. What do you find most rewarding about the work you do for your clients; the dreams you build for others? A. One: helping to create something out of nothing. Two: making our clients feel cared for. And three: designing a home that seems too good to be true. Q. HDG is committed to never selling out. Can you tell us more about this? A. We started out when the economic odds were stacked against us, in a deep recession. We risked little because we had little. We started with passion, grit, determination, and with nothing to lose. We built our mission from the inside out, and at a modest pace. For us, design has always started with intrinsic value. We’re simply not wired to churn out McMansions; that would defy the essence of our being. It’s not hard to stick to your values when you don’t know otherwise. We know there’s a place for big developments and rubber-stamp design, but since it has never been part of our canvass or thought process, it’s more natural to stay in our lane of a design-centric, person-centric mission. We are committed to sticking to designing every project with the same amount of vigor, adventure and curiosity. It doesn’t matter if it is a $30 million home, a five-story mixed-use building, or a renovation on an old home that is asking for a reimagination. We love it all—and it all matters. Q. You are currently in the midst of a big project here in Sandpoint. Can you share some details about the project and some of the cool features/amenities this build includes? A. We are designing a few projects on the water in Sandpoint right now. One of which is a 22,000-square-foot company retreat/personal residence. We will all have to wait and see the finished product take shape over the next 18 months. The foundations were poured in October, and HDG project architect Michael Mannhard is overseeing the architecture, with HDG interiors director Aubrey Plaisance handling all of the interiors. n the quietude of Sandpoint, where whispers of snowy winds intertwine with the hushed secrets of the mountains, a symphony of compassion resonates. It's a sonorous ode to community health, a composition that finds its crescendo in the annual Heart Ball hosted by the Bonner General Health Foundation. This is not merely an event; it's a harmonious blend of history, dedication, and a commitment that beats in unison with the very heart of Sandpoint. The Heart Ball, a radiant jewel in the community's crown, unfurled its wings in 2008. Picture a canvas of hope painted by the skilled hands of the Bonner General Health Foundation Board of Trustees. Their goal? Not merely to fundraise but to compose a melody that orchestrates the enhancement of services, the flourish of renovations, and the grandeur of substantial equipment acquisitions at Bonner General Health (BGH). This gala, this soirée of benevolence, is more than a night of revelry— it's a cornerstone of community care. Attendees, numbering more than 300, have become the honored guests at a banquet where compassion is the main course, and generosity is the dessert that lingers on the palate. Past Heart Balls have been architects of change, channeling their proceeds to reshape the very corridors of BGH. Emergency departments transformed, a second mammography machine acquired, and the radiology of trauma bolstered—each note struck contributing to a more resilient and robust health care fortification. As the Heart Ball unfurls its opulent wings in 2024, it does so with a profound dedication. The spotlight of honor casts its glow upon Jack Parker, one of the founding figures in the narrative of Bonner General Health. Jack, a luminary on the original Board of Directors, was not merely a steward of health care—he was a visionary who believed in the symphony of education and health orchestrating the success of any community. In 1964, facing financial constraints that resembled an impassable mountain range, Jack and his compatriots embarked on a journey fueled by determination. Their destination? A new hospital for Sandpoint. Through the Hill-Burton Act, they secured an $800,000 grant—a key to unlock the doors of possibility. The hospital, a phoenix rising from the partial construction and a naval base's floatation, opened its doors in 1973, a testament to Jack’s unwavering dedication. For five decades, his baton conducted the melody of service on the Board of Directors. A charter member of the Rotary Club of Sandpoint, his words echoed like refrains of wisdom: "If you take from this community, you have to give back." In dedicating Heart Ball 2024 to Jack Parker and his

family, the community pays homage to a symphony conductor whose foresight, generosity and wisdom continue to resonate through the hearts of those fortunate enough to have crossed his path. As the Heart Ball embraces its role as a benefactor of change, its focus shifts to the pressing battle against cancer. The 2024 Heart Ball, with a dedication to Jack Parker's legacy, has a clear mission: the acquisition of a new endoscope. Cancer, a shadow that looms over communities, is most effectively fought through early detection. The endoscope, a versatile instrument, takes center stage in this battle. It transcends the boundaries of colonoscopies, casting its light on both men and women from the age of 45—a crucial step in the early detection of colon cancer. Yet, the endoscope's melody does not end there. Its harmonious notes resonate in the detection of esophagus and stomach cancers, uncovering polyps, tumors, inflammation, ulcers and an array of other medical nuances. It is not merely a diagnostic tool; it is a versatile virtuoso that plays a pivotal role in various BGH departments and surgical procedures. Presently, Bonner General Health navigates the complex terrain of cancer detection with a lone endoscope shared among multiple departments. The Heart Ball's dedication to acquiring a second endoscope heralds a new movement in this symphony. This addition is not a mere encore; it's a transformative crescendo that promises to amplify efficiency throughout the hospital. With two instruments dancing in tandem, the BGH staff gains the ability to see and screen more community members. Simultaneously, the other endoscope finds its rhythm in another department, creating a synchronous dance of healing across the hospital. This efficiency surge is not merely a logistical upgrade; it's a promise of enhanced patient care and improved outcomes. Reduced wait times become the staccato beats of a quicker, more responsive health care system. Ultimately, lives saved become the magnum opus—the soulstirring melody that resonates through the heartbeats of grateful families. No symphony reaches its zenith without the harmonious contributions of its instrumentalists. The Heart Ball, a collective opus of compassion, extends its sincerest gratitude to the unsung heroes—the sponsors, donors and volunteers. In the words of Keely Gray and Justin Dick, the president of the Bonner General Health Foundation Board, "The success of the BGH Foundation and our Heart Ball is wholly related to our Foundation Trustees, Advisory Council, donors, sponsors, volunteers, and the BGH staff." Each penny raised becomes a musical note in this altruistic composition, with no administrative costs dimming the

Action Point Physical Therapy focuses on patient-focused, personalized therapy by JILLIAN CHANDLER
F
rom a young age, Christian (Chris) Vanderford was familiar with the profession of physical therapy, as his uncle, Steve Sodorff, owned a physical therapy clinic (Bonner Physical Therapy) for many years. “I was drawn to the profession, as it provided an opportunity to help people, and being an athlete through college, I had my share of injuries. Through the rehab process, I saw how important it was to have a team to help guide me through that process,” Chris reflects. “I am also interested in the science of human performance.” Today, as a doctor of physical therapy (DPT), Chris is in a unique position to not only help his clients move better but push them to perform better so they can enjoy their lives to the fullest. Chris graduated from Idaho State University in May of 2008 and worked at a variety of prestigious places over the years, from Boise to Maui. He returned to Boise in 2017 and started his own Physical Therapy PRN Service, then opened his first private practice PT clinic in North Boise. “I decided to move back to my hometown of Sandpoint in the fall of 2019, practicing in local clinics, then starting Action Point Physical Therapy inside 7B Fitness in September of 2020,” he says. The team at Action Point Physical Therapy has been providing patient-focused, personalized therapy for their clients. Chris’ team includes Garrett Fischer, DPT; Jenny Jones, PT; Rebecca Thomas, PTA; Ashmel (Ash) Vargas, ATC; Melissa Midstokke, front office specialist; and Brooke Reiger, billing and credentialing specialist. “Melissa has been an important part of the practice growth, remains an important part of the team, and has been with me since the beginning,” Chris smiles. Garrett is Action Point’s principal physical therapist and has been a large part of the recent growth of the clinic. Originally from Rockford, Illinois, he received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Carroll University in Wisconsin. He has been a part of the Sandpoint community since 2017 and joined the Action Point team in 2023. Garrett specializes in orthopedics, post-surgical rehabilitation, concussion/vertigo treatment, manual/myofascial therapy, and sports medicine. He holds certifications in dry needling and concussion health/vestibular rehabilitation. Ash is the newest addition to the team and will be providing athletic training services at Sandpoint High School—which has not had an athletic training service in place for the last few years. “Ash will be holding regular office hours three days per week and providing the student-athletes with injury treatment and prevention, as well as strengthening and conditioning programs so they can continue to perform at their highest levels,” Chris shares. “He will also be providing ImPACT Concussion Baseline Testing to better detect concussions for proper referral and management.”
Chris goes on to share that Jenny’s expertise focuses on balance training and women’s health. Services provided at Action Point Physical Therapy include: outpatient orthopedic rehabilitation (including pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation), customized strengthening and stretching programs, neuromuscular training (to improve movement patterns), dry needling, joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, posture evaluation and correction, functional movement screening and correction, treating women’s health issues (female providers perform this service), taping, walking gait/running gait analysis and training, vestibular evaluation and treatment (vertigo/dizziness) and blood flow restriction training. Their “Run Well Program” features video gait analysis, improves running form and efficiency, and decreases the risk of injury or re-injury. Chris shares that what he enjoys most about what he does is his ability to show people that, in most cases, no matter what their injury or condition, there are still things they can do to help move better to improve their situation—"so they can do more physically with less pain,” he explains. “We take people through this process from day one to discharge and show them what they need to do to make this happen while giving them the tools to maintain their gains after their plan of care is over. That is where physical therapists fit into the health care paradigm. With shorter days and colder temperatures, our market has gone into a slight “hibernation” in the past month. Residential sales volume is down 32% compared to the previous 30-day period and a urry of late-season waterfront sales resulted in an 8% increase in median sales price. Investors with ready cash have been rewarded for their patience. Mortgage rates are in a freeze-thaw cycle. The rising cost of nancing inc increases pressure on borrowers with marginal buying power. In this environment, more sellers are willing to nance their property sales and reap their gains in the form of interest over time. In the past 30 days in Bonner and Boundary Counties, 10% of home sales were owner- nanced and cash buyers accounted for 47% of residential sales. * Land sellers adjusted prices in anticipation of winter and cash buyers responded. 55% of Bonner and Boundary County parcels sold in the past month were cash transactions. A shining star is the Schweitzer Mountain market where 28% of residential units are in escrow with a median asking price in the range of $2,500,000. Current offerings range in price from $315,000 for a 320 sq. ft. studio unit to $4,625,000 for a new four-bedroom home. Is now the right time for you to buy or sell? 5th & Cedar: In-Town Luxury Condos Meet the developers, Rob and Kellee Daugherty
S
andpoint has been a cornerstone for their family and business in many ways. 5th & Cedar is part of their vision and opportunity to give back. Since 2000, Rob and Kellee have lived in and loved Sandpoint — teaching their three children to ski Schweitzer, boat and swim in Lake Pend Oreille, and even hosting Camp Daugherty family reunions here! They started Daugherty Management in 2009, a luxury vacation rental and property management company that manages over 100 homes. They believe in God, family, partnerships, hard work, creative ideas, kindness and optimism, along with a smattering of daily joyfulness, gratitude and laughter. The vision for 5th & Cedar came from an opportunity to build a new cornerstone. Working with Boden Architecture, the unique design would begin the regentrification of a key corner of town with a mixed-use building that looked like an updated version of the brick, metal and glass architecture of the Granary District. A business on the street level would have great exposure and opportunity. Then, designing six high-quality condominiums
above would give people an opportunity to live, walk and easily participate in resort town living. Since Sandpoint has no large resort hotels in town, investors or owners who like their real estate assets to perform could choose to make their home available for professionally managed luxury boutique rentals. Resort towns have resort amenities, so it was also important to have a rooftop entertainment area for condo owners with a private area to take in lake and mountain views, lounge, barbecue, sit around a fire table, enjoy the outdoor TV or relax in the hot tub. Finally, in order to create parking, the Daughertys bought an additional parcel to add garages for condo owners and parking for the business. Tomlinson Sothebys, Sandpoint’s largest real estate company, immediately seized the business opportunity and anchors the entire main floor. The Daughertys partnered with Base Camp Design to professionally design and furnish the interior of the top-floor corner unit. This helps future owners to see how a home can be furnished, and Base Camp offers custom design packages. Sandpoint will always be a cornerstone for the Daugherty family, and it is their hope 5th & Cedar will be a new foundation for the future of Sandpoint.

fresh collection of films that are touring as part of the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival will be shown at the historic Panida Theater (300 North First Avenue) January 19 through 21. The Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival will once again showcase a curated selection of adventure films, emphasizing real-world exploits and outdoor exploration. Attendees can expect a diverse lineup of documentaries and cinematographic feats, capturing the essence of global adventure and the determined spirit of those who push boundaries. The festival attracts outdoor enthusiasts and film lovers alike. The Panida Theater once again serves as the festival's hub, offering a platform for filmmakers to present their narratives of daring expeditions, environmental challenges and human resilience. With a focus on factual storytelling and genuine exploration, the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival has become an integral part of Sandpoint's cultural calendar, fostering a community-wide

appreciation for the world's natural wonders and the individuals who seek to discover them. Film programs are different each night with an average of eight films being shown. Films focus on mountain culture, sport, lifestyle or environment. Presented by Mountain Fever Productions, 2024 show dates are as follows: Friday, January 19, Saturday, January 20, and Sunday, January 21. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7pm, with the Sunday show beginning at 6pm. Doors open one hour prior. Tickets are priced $18 in advance (purchase online at Panida.org/events) and increase to $20 if purchased at the door. DOG HOUSES AND ICE FISHING ABUNDANCE BELOW THE ICE OF LAKE PEND OREILLE
T
he 1930s were hard times for America, including Bonner County, due to the economic collapse called the Great Depression. We may think of wintertime as desolate of resources such as food, but the people of Sandpoint had the advantage of living on a big lake. Men would build what they called “dog houses” consisting of wood scraps, tar, paper, and two small six-inch logs, which would result in a little shelter with

a built-in sled for ice fishing. It would take at least five men to push the dog houses down the road and out onto the lake. The whole beach would be full of dog houses, and yet everyone knew which one was theirs. They would take fish home for dinner or they would take turns selling their fish to people coming through on the railroad. It may have been hard times, but people had their little village of dog houses and ice fishing to enjoy during the freezing season.
