ho moves to Idaho?” Eric Skinner jokingly asked his sister when she said she and her husband were moving here. Fast forward a few years, and Eric and his wife, Julina, were finding their own way to Idaho, realizing this is where they wanted to raise their kids. “We loaded up and moved here with little more than a passion for Sandpoint in 1991,” recalls Eric. His wife and he started with a small computer and internet service company, offering a real estate database that made properties searchable long before Zillow or any of the nationally known sites. Today, he helps people fulfill their own dream of moving to Sandpoint as an owner and associate Broker with Century 21 RiverStone.

Q. Is there a specific memory, story or person that has greatly influenced who you are today?

A. That’s a hard one, as at different stages in life, many people stepped in and influenced me greatly. That being said, Julina and I were both greatly inspired and influenced by my sister, Leigh, and my brother-in-law, Joe Mire, when we were first starting our lives together. Julina and I both grew up in families with divorced parents and the normal life junk associated with divorces. So family unity was something we both longed for.

Leigh and Joe were great inspirations to us in how they raised their three kids. They invested heavily in the time they spent with their kids, and it showed early on and into the adults they became. Julina and I tried, in many ways, to mimic what we saw in their family with Ryan and later our daughter Bethany.

Q. What makes our town such a special, unique place to live?

A. Sandpoint is a community where you feel connected. Of course, the lake and mountains are extremely beautiful, but the kinds of folks that are attracted to our area generally want something different than what you can find anywhere else. Family and traditions matter more than jobs and possessions. Most kids from the Sandpoint area try to figure out how to stay here and raise their families here, not how to leave the town where they grew up. That is special and hard to find. To me, that’s Sandpoint.

Q. What are you most passionate about in your role as a Realtor and Broker?

A. The people you get to know. I find myself personally invested and caring about those we work with and our clients. You spend time with

them learning about their families and story, and by finding common ground with them, I oftentimes become friends with my clients.

Naturally, this makes the process of matching them with the right property that much easier.

It’s not a job when hanging out with friends. I’m also passionate about finding unique properties and seeing something special that others don’t see—until you show them.

Q. The current real estate market is unprecedented. How have you managed to navigate it, and what are the key takeaways/ advice you would offer buyers and sellers as a result?

A. First, I navigate everything with a great business partnership with Brent Stevens and his mother, Margie Stevens, our designated Broker.

My smartest moves in life have always been by surrounding myself with people who are smarter than I am, from my wife to my business partners, to our great staff and agents.

At Century 21 RiverStone, we have a great core group of professionals that know this industry inside and out. Our internal communication is a major key to our success. This mindset of agents helping other agents is a powerful benefit in navigating crazy market swings, and it is our secret sauce in my opinion.

Q. What is exciting about the current market and changes in North Idaho, and what do you expect to see in the future?

A. It’s easy to focus on the concerns we all have about the rapid growth of our area. We all feel that way as we see some things changing. Let’s face it, the secret of Sandpoint is out. But one thing I find as we are growing as a community, we are seeing great new products and properties hitting the market.

I think it’s important for people to understand there is a lot of responsible development happening. I believe with the new standards developers must go through, we are going to see better planned communities, with amenities that serve to keep North Idaho a special place to live.

Q. What has been a piece of advice or experience that you’ve carried with you and that has impacted your life for the better?

A. Don’t let others pull you down! I think we live in a time where there is a lot of negative junk going around. I would be the first to agree, there is plenty to be worried about as a nation divided making bad mistakes. But we need to not lose our zest for life, or our passion for our future, or that hope of that next generation figuring out what we couldn’t.

Q. In your free time, how do you spend your time? What is your biggest passion and outlet outside of work?

A. I seriously enjoy hunting, fishing and pretty much anything outdoors. I’ve been blessed to enjoy activities like being a pilot and flying all over the Northwest. But, without question or hesitation, my greatest passion is spending time with my family, specifically my grandchildren.

Julina and I have been given the greatest gift we could have ever imagined in our lives. We moved to Sandpoint to raise a family, and our children and their spouses gave us a large family that is extremely close. That was our dream when we moved to Sandpoint, and Sandpoint provided the quality of life that our kids wanted when raising their kids. So, when I’m not working these days, I’m setting up a fishing trip, planning a sleepover or bleeding internally from them jumping on me like a trampoline, and I wouldn’t change a thing!

N

o matter how many times you’ve driven across the bridge connecting Sagle to Sandpoint, where the Pend Oreille River flows out of Lake Pend Oreille, chances are the view never ceases to amaze you. For those of us who live in Sandpoint, there’s a moment when you arrive at the bridge from the south when you seem to take a deep breath, relax and quietly realize you’re home. For visitors, this first view of Sandpoint from south on the bridge is one that’s not soon forgotten.

It’s a drive that consistently takes your breath away, whether it’s shrouded in the mist of early morning, or the viewpoint from which to take in one of North Idaho’s spectacular sunsets over the mountains, reflecting into the lake and river below.

Come the summer months, the bridge serves as a point to take in the many boaters and occasionally even boat parades that pass beneath its storied pilings. The Long Bridge as we know it has become intrinsically connected with Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille; but as we pass along its lengths—many of us two or more times per day—it’s easy to forget that this convenient behemoth hasn’t always been there.

Local legend has it that sometime around 1900, the 2-1/2-yearold son of local Tom Craig accidentally chopped his toe off. Since the family lived on the south side of the lake, the only way to the doctor in Sandpoint was by ferry, rowboat or the train trestle. Craig gathered his son in his arms, and ran across the trestle, only to be overtaken by a train, which conveniently slowed down for him to jump aboard.

The boy made it through, but the incident was a vivid example of why a bridge was so desperately needed to connect the farms and communities south of the river and lake with the necessities of town.

Several years and encouragement from many local farmers later, the Kootenai County Commissioners began planning a new bridge, and on May 26, 1908, the first pilings were driven for what would become Sandpoint’s first Long Bridge, known in the early days as the Wagon Bridge.

Completed and ready for use in March of 1910, the wooden bridge connecting Sagle with Sandpoint spanned almost 2 miles, incorporated 1,540 pilings and cost around $20,000. In the middle was a steel lift to allow steamboat traffic to pass through underneath. It was a massive undertaking that would gain renown as the “longest wooden bridge in the world” at the time. Wooden planks were placed lengthwise down the span of the bridge, which connected directly with 1st Avenue at its arrival in Sandpoint.

By the 1930s, the bridge had started to fall into disrepair, its wooden structure and surface breaking down. It was torn down to make room for a second bridge built during the Great Depression with help from the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal agency created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which employed millions of job seekers during the Great Depression to work on public buildings and roads.

At the time of its construction, the second long bridge provided employment for members of around 750 families in the area, writes May Garrison for Spokane Historical.

Timber for the bridge was logged from the area, amounting to close to 3 million feet of lumber. Three thousand larch pilings alone were driven into the river button to support the bridge.

The bridge was dedicated on March 3 of 1934, and while it was still built of wood, it proved a much safer and quieter brother to its predecessor, and still retained its fame as the longest wooden bridge in the world.

For 22 years the bridge served the area, accommodating the heavy traffic of the World War II years when the naval training station at Farragut brought thousands of people and tons of traffic and heavy supplies through the area. Heavy use and North Idaho winters took their toll on the bridge, and in 1956 the third Long Bridge was built, this time of steel and concrete, with the span consisting partly of fill and partly bridge.

The new bridge was built east of its predecessor and connected just north of town instead of with 1st Avenue.

The historic bridge may have lost its title as the longest wooden bridge in the world, but its scale and span was nonetheless impressive, as was the cost. Less than 50 years after construction of the first bridge, this new one cost a whopping $12 million. It would be retired for vehicular use in 1981, when the existing fourth bridge was dedicated, built right alongside the previous one.

Now walkers, runners and bikers use the historic third Long Bridge daily, enjoying the views and space, while cars and trucks pass to the west, easily navigating the distance between Sagle and Sandpoint. Long forgotten are the days when a river and lake cut off easy connection from the south of the river, although fishermen are occasionally reminded of the area’s previous life when their lines snag on old wood pilings sunk below the surface of the water.

Today, we jet between Coeur d’Alene, Rathdrum, Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry without hesitation, pausing in the midst of our drive to take in the view you can’t help but notice as you cross the Long Bridge, decades of history passing below.

As you make the journey across the bridge, to the east you’ll notice another bridge of almost equal length, bearing hundreds of feet of train car on its north or southward journey. The Sandpoint railroad bridge runs parallel to the Long Bridge—oftentimes you’ll look over your shoulder to the sight and sound of a train chugging the distance over the large mass of water.

This bridge carries an even longer history than our beloved Long Bridge. First built in 1905, it spent over a century helping trains make the long trek through North Idaho’s scenic landscape, crossing Idaho’s largest body of water. While large parts of the bridge have been replaced over the years, there are still portions of the 4,800-foot span that remain original.

Much has changed over the past 100 years as the region grows and people move in from all across the country, but when you cross the Long Bridge and glance east, the familiar sight of a train whistling in across the bridge is a reminder of the early days of Sandpoint, and the role the railroad has played in our small town on the lake.

In modern days, the crucial—and sometimes controversial— story of the Long Bridge and railroad bridge continue to evolve.

Now, a bypass extends the bridge over the city, allowing for a more calm downtown without the traffic of Highway 95 adding to the ever-growing bustle of Sandpoint, and construction is underway on a second railroad bridge to help reduce congestion at the crossing. It’s yet another sign that times are changing, yet our small town in the middle of it remains connected to the south by a lasting landmark whose history has become as intrinsically tied to the town of Sandpoint as the trains that hourly cross through the town on all sides.

A popular destination for those looking simply looking for a change of pace to celebrities, with sightings from Kim Kardashian to Justin Bieber generating buzz throughout the year, North Idaho is the not-so-hidden gem that more and more people are ready to claim a corner of.

In fact, the KLIX radio station based in Idaho Falls reported last month that 1,000 people move to Idaho daily. Of course, Sandpoint is no exception from this influx.

RISE New data shows just how popular North Idaho is for homebuyers

W

hile the rising demand in the regional housing market is nothing new, more information continues to emerge as North Idaho locals navigate an influx of movers to the area.

Recently, Realtor.com highlighted hot housing markets very close to home for Sandpoint, naming Coeur d’Alene the eighth-hottest housing market in the nation for February 2021. Spokane ranked just behind it as the 10th hottest market.

With a significant jump from last year’s number 62 spot on the hotlist, up to its current place in the top 10, the Coeur d’Alene area shows no signs of slowing down in drawing in movers and homebuyers.

A popular destination for those looking simply looking for a change of pace to celebrities, with sightings from Kim Kardashian to Justin Bieber generating buzz throughout the year, North Idaho is the not-so-hidden gem that more and more people are ready to claim a corner of.

In fact, the KLIX radio station based in Idaho Falls reported last month that 1,000 people move to Idaho daily. Of course, Sandpoint is no exception from this influx.

With the housing market steadily on the rise over the past year, the statistics are no real surprise. Even still, seeing new numbers reflecting the reality of the housing market packs a bigger punch with a new level of perspective on just how busy it’s becoming.

From its market research, Realtor.com named several locations “secondary cities”— cities like Portland, Maine; Pueblo, Colorado; and, of course, “a slew of zip codes in North Idaho”—that have become movers’ most sought-after destinations. Larger metro cities are noticeably moving down in market rankings as buyers continue to prioritize space and affordability in these areas that offer less hustle and bustle while still remaining close to major hubs.

SANDPOINT FARMERS MARKET MAY 1-29 The Farmers Market at Sandpoint has made its return to Farmin Park. The season’s market kicked off May 1 to the enjoyment of the community as they shopped local while wandering produce, goods, crafts and food from a variety of local vendors throughout the area. Catchin’ the Big One …

I

t’s the season for fishing, so for all those anglers out there, let’s talk trophies. Lake Pend Oreille has long had a history for delivering the big ones—everything from rainbow and bull trout, to mackinaw and Northern pike. So what are the biggest fish that have ever been pulled from our majestic waters? In 1995, Jim Eversole caught the largest fish ever taken from Lake Pend Oreille—a 43 pound, 6 ounce Mackinaw. But the lake’s also known for its huge rainbows, which are coming back. The largest rainbow to be fished out of the lake was a 37 pounder caught in 1947 by Wes Hamlet. Why such big fish? An abundance of Kokanee to feed on, for one.
