Danielle Lopez was the most professional, caring, helpful, above and beyond agent I have ever met in my life. She is beautiful inside and out. We were extremely high maintenance, but that didn’t waiver her at all. She stuck with us thru the highs and lows, mind and mood changes and assured us all would be fine. It was. She is a phenomenal agent. I will forever be grateful for her compassion and hope to call her my forever friend. Thank you Danielle!

Know the Risks of Investing — and Not Investing
nvesting involves risk — and so does not investing. It’s important to know how each type of risk can affect your ability to reach your financial goals.
Let’s start with the risks associated with investing. There’s not one single investment risk, but many, as different types of investments carry unique risks. Here’s a look at three investment categories and some of the risks connected with them:
•Stocks – When you invest in stocks or stockbased mutual funds, you will incur the risk that the value of your investments may decline. Stock prices can fall for any number of reasons – lower-than-expected earnings, a change in management, change in consumer tastes, and so on. Although the historical trend for stocks has been positive, there will always be periods when prices are down. One way to help defend against this volatility is to hold stocks for the long term, rather than constantly buying and selling, and to own a mix of stocks from different industries and even different countries.
•Bonds – When market interest rates rise, the value of your bonds can decline because investors won’t pay full price for them when they can get the newer ones that offer higher rates. Another type of risk associated with bonds is credit risk, which essentially describes the risk that the bond issuer may default, potentially disrupting your flow of interest payments. However, you can help mitigate this risk by purchasing investment-grade bonds that receive the highest credit ratings from independent rating agencies.
•Certificates of deposit (CDs) – Although CDs are generally considered safe because their principal is guaranteed, they do carry
reinvestment risk — the risk that you won’t be able to reinvest the proceeds of a maturing CD at the same interest rate. To help protect against this risk, you could own CDs of varying maturities. When market rates are low, you’ll still have your longer-term CDs paying higher interest, and when market rates rise, you can reinvest the money from your maturing shorterterm CDs into the new, higher-paying ones.
Now, let’s turn to a completely different type of risk — the risk of not investing. And this risk is easy to understand: If you don’t invest, or if you consistently invest only in the most conservative vehicles, your money may not grow enough to allow you to reach your important long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you should never own conservative investments, including CDs and some types of bonds. When you’re saving for a short-term goal, such as a down payment on a house, a wedding or a long vacation, you want the money to be there when you need it, so an investment that offers protection of principal may be appropriate, even if it doesn’t provide much in the way of growth.
For those long-term goals, though, you may need to build an investment portfolio that contains growth potential and that reflects your personal risk tolerance and time horizon. Over time, your risk tolerance may change. As you get closer to retirement, you may want to take a somewhat more conservative approach — but you’ll always need some elements of growth.
When you invest, risk can’t be eliminated, but it can be managed. Keeping this in mind, consider a long-term investment strategy that allows for risk but also offers the possibility of reward.
DECADES OF DEDICATION: HOW A FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS THRIVES IN NORTH IDAHO
by TAYLOR SHILLAM
orthwest Autobody has been a cornerstone in north Idaho since 1976, delivering top-notch technical expertise and unwavering commitment to the community. Eric Donenfeld discusses how this family business has thrived through decades of growth, emphasizing their dedication to quality, community involvement, and family values.
"
BEING A HOMETOWN, LOCALLY-OWNED BUSINESS COMES WITH A GREAT SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY AND PRIDE.
Q.How did your upbringing in Sandpoint influence your educational and professional journey?
A. Growing up in Sandpoint, my brother and I were fortunate to learn life’s valuable lessons from our father, Mel. He instilled in us the importance of business ethics and the golden rule. Both Cory and I left for college but felt a strong desire to return home. Today, we raise our families in the community that shaped our values.
Q.What is your current position at Northwest Autobody?
A. Cory and I are proud to co-own the business, continuing the legacy our father started. We believe in shared leadership, so we rotate as president of the company every few years. This approach allows us to bring fresh ideas while staying true to our core values as we oversee the shops.
Q.How did Northwest Autobody start, and how has it grown?
A. Our journey began in 1976 with our father, Mel, who founded Northwest Autobody with a focus on collision repair. His commitment to quality repairs and exceptional customer service quickly made the Michigan Street shop a local staple. Nearly a decade ago, Cory and I took over the business and saw an opportunity to expand. We added a new facility in Ponderay, which is a successful venture. Both shops have continued to grow, with multiple renovations to meet increasing demand. About a year ago, we expanded to Bonners Ferry, acquiring a successful shop, Accurate Northwest. It’s been an exciting journey of growth and community impact.
Q.What have you enjoyed most about being in a family business?
A. Family is the keyword here. It is a family business. Family is at the heart of everything we do. Watching our dad, we learned that our business extends beyond our immediate family to our employees and customers. Treating everyone like family ensures we never lose sight of what’s important. It’s incredibly rewarding to see our children grow up in the same town we did, surrounded by the same values and community spirit.
Q.Please tell us how Northwest Autobody is involved in the local community, including giving to the Bonner County Food Bank.
A. Community involvement is a cornerstone of our business. For the past eight years, we’ve partnered with the Bonner County Food Bank through our Deervember program, raising over $20,000 to help local families in need. This initiative is a collaborative effort supported by long-time donors like Washington Trust and AGE Heating and Cooling. For every animal strike in November, we donate $50 to the Food Bank, raising awareness and providing much-needed support. Our partnership with the Food Bank and Debbie Love reminds us that we can all make a difference together.
Q.How has Northwest Autobody grown and expanded over the years, and what services can it provide the community today? How many employees were there at the opening compared to today?
A. Except for maintaining our core values, almost everything about our company has grown over the past nearly 50 years. We’re constantly updating our procedures and holding monthly meetings to ensure we’re always at the top of our game. Today, we employ the industry's best repair technicians and painters, supported by state-of-the-art
equipment, industry certifications, and world-class paint facilities. What started with just our father as the sole employee has grown into a team of 36 dedicated professionals, all working together to provide exceptional service to our community.
Q.Northwest Autobody seems involved with almost every event and good thing going on around the area. What charities or activities do you support/give back to?
A. Giving back is a core principle for us. We’re deeply involved with the Food Bank, Business Network International (BNI), and Sandpoint Rotary, which does incredible work with local scholarships and reading programs. Our business networking group has made a huge difference in our community, providing valuable leads and tips for its members. We also support local soccer organizations and high school and club wrestling. We are active members of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce. Anytime a nonprofit group asks for donations, we support them.
Q.What do you enjoy most about being a part of the local community?
A. Being a hometown, locally-owned business comes with a great sense of responsibility and pride. We stand behind everything we do because our customers are often our friends, relatives, or someone we know through the community. The Golden Rule isn’t just a saying for us; it’s how we operate. We’re all in this together, with hundreds of other small businesses, and we’re committed to supporting each other. The pandemic reinforced the importance of sticking together, and we’re proud to positively influence our community.
Q.What is most rewarding about the work you do?
A. It is simply the satisfaction of a job well done. Nothing beats the feeling of hitting it out of the park, knowing our customer is thrilled and spreading the word. We love positive Google reviews that are fun to read and act as word-of-mouth advertising. We take great pride in attracting great employees and allowing them to provide for their families.
Q.Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
A. It’s an honor to live and work in such a beautiful place, surrounded by a community that values quality, trust, and family. Every day, we’re reminded of the trust our customers place in us to repair their vehicles safely and correctly. We know that no one ever wants to have an accident, but when it happens, we do everything we can to ease the burden. This means treating our customers with respect, keeping them informed, honoring our commitments, and often making new friends along the way.

SANDPOINT Run, Race & Revel in
EMBRACING WELLNESS AND WONDER: A FUN RUN FOR ALL
Sby DAMEN RODRIGUEZ
andpoint, Idaho, is gearing up for one of the most exciting events of the year—the Find Your Strength Fun Run 2024. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Sand Creek trail, this celebration of fitness and community spirit will take place on September 14, 2024, under the guidance of the Bonner General Health Foundation. More than just a race, it’s an event that blends athletic challenge, charitable giving, and a family-friendly atmosphere, making it one of the highlights of Sandpoint’s calendar.
Kristin Carlson, Marketing Manager for Bonner General Health, explained how the event came to be: "The Foundation has always wanted to incorporate a healthy, family-friendly activity into its fundraising efforts. Bonner General Health (BGH) conducts a Community Health Needs Assessment every three years to identify the top health barriers in our community. Obesity, in some form, consistently ranks in the top four. The Foundation took this information and created the Find Your Strength Fun Run to get our community moving while raising funds for a worthy cause."
The Find Your Strength Fun Run is designed to include participants of all abilities. It features two main categories: a 5K run and a 1K walk. The 5K is ideal for those looking for a physical challenge, offering a scenic but demanding course that tests endurance and speed. For those preferring a slower pace, the 1K walk provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy the event in a relaxed and social environment. This combination ensures that everyone—from seasoned athletes to families with young children—can be part of the event.
Kristin highlighted the broader goals for this year’s run: "Our main goal is to foster a sense of community by encouraging families to participate in a healthy activity together. We’re working closely with the Lake Pend Oreille School District to assist with registration fees for families who may need financial support. Our secondary goal is to raise funds for the Foundation's Hometown Health Grants Initiative, which directly benefits our community."
The Sand Creek trail, where the race occurs, is a perfect setting. Renowned for its beautiful landscapes and tranquil surroundings, the trail offers a visually rewarding route. As participants progress through the course, they’ll be treated to views of towering trees, vibrant wildflowers, and serene water scenes. This peaceful backdrop enhances the overall race experience, making it more than just a physical challenge but also a connection with nature. Kristin added, "Both races
will start and finish at Sandpoint City Beach. The 5k begins at 10:00 a.m., and the superhero-themed 1k starts at 11:00 a.m. We encourage runners to come dressed as their favorite superheroes! For those without costumes, we’ll provide capes and masks. The run will conclude with a family-friendly after-party on the lawn of Trinity at City Beach from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m."
Aside from the physical benefits, the Find Your Strength Fun Run serves an important community purpose. The event plays a crucial role in supporting the Bonner General Health Foundation. All proceeds from the race go directly toward improving local health services and initiatives, including programs that improve access to care, enhance medical facilities, and fund health education efforts. "The race is in its third year," said Kristin. "Each year, we learn ways to improve the planning, execution, and logistics of the event. This year, proceeds will benefit the Hometown Health Grants initiative. In previous years, the funds went toward purchasing an exoskeleton rehabilitation suit, which we’re happy to report has been successfully used by patients at Performance Therapy Services."
For those looking to participate, early registration is highly recommended. The official race website provides a convenient platform for signing up, allowing participants to secure their spot and receive a commemorative t-shirt as a keepsake. In addition to registration, the website offers essential race-day logistics, including information about start times and race packet pickup. Kristin encouraged participants to register early, as it streamlines the event’s organization and allows people to focus on their raceday preparations.
Training for the Find Your Strength Fun Run involves more than just signing up. To perform well and avoid injury, participants should follow a well-rounded training regimen that includes cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and flexibility workouts. These elements help to build the stamina and strength needed to tackle the 5K run or enjoy the 1K walk.
Kristin also noted the importance of staying hydrated, particularly given Idaho’s warm late-summer weather. Wearing moisture-wicking, breathable clothing and properly fitted running shoes will also help ensure comfort and prevent injuries.
For those who want to support the event from a different angle, volunteering offers a meaningful way to get involved. Volunteers are essential to the smooth operation of the Find Your Strength Fun Run, helping with registration, managing water stations, and assisting with post-race activities. Kristin emphasized the critical role of volunteers: "There would be no event without our volunteers. They are involved in every part of the production from start to finish. Our whole Foundation Board consists of volunteers, and we need about 30 additional volunteers to assist with registration, manage fun family activities, sell merchandise, and help with cleanup after the event. We’re grateful to the BGH staff, teens, and community members volunteering their time. They truly are the backbone of the event."
In addition to the race, the Find Your Strength Fun Run offers a vibrant, community-focused celebration. After crossing the finish line, participants can enjoy live music, food vendors, and family-friendly activities on the lawn of Trinity at City Beach. The festive atmosphere reflects the event’s commitment to health, vitality, and community spirit, making it a memorable experience for all. From the starting line to the finish line celebrations, the day will be filled with energy and a collective sense of accomplishment.
This year's event aims to build on the success of previous years, with hopes of raising significant funds for the Hometown Health Grants Initiative. Kristin shared that the Foundation has already awarded $120,000 in grants over the past three years, supporting various departments within Bonner General Health. "Some of the funded grants include microscopes for the Lab, a Poison Prevention education program for Pharmacy, and an Electronic Patient Status Tracker Board for Surgical Services. Our goal this year is to raise $50,000, and we hope the Fun Run will help us achieve that."
The Find Your Strength Fun Run 2024 is much more than a race. It’s an opportunity for the Sandpoint community to come together in support of health and wellness while also contributing to vital local health initiatives. As the event draws near, the excitement is building. Kristin invites everyone to participate, whether by running, walking, or donating: "It’s not too late to register or donate. Grab your running or walking shoes and join us for a fun-filled day! If you have any questions about the race, feel free to reach out at Foundation@bonnergeneral.org."
With its stunning course, inclusive approach, and strong community focus, the Find Your Strength Fun Run is poised to be a memorable and impactful event. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a casual walker, this event offers something for everyone and promises to showcase the vibrant spirit of Sandpoint on September 14, 2024.

A BOUNTY OF Vegetables and Flowers for Autumn Fall Planting:
Discover the best vegetables and flowers to plant in autumn for a vibrant and fruitful garden
by ELIZABETH RAY
As the vibrant days of summer begin to wane and the cooler temperatures of autumn set in, many gardeners might think the growing season is coming to an end. However, fall is a fantastic time to plant both vegetables and flowers, offering an extended harvest and a burst of color that can last well into the season.
Fall planting offers several advantages. The cooler temperatures reduce plant stress and decrease water evaporation, making it easier to maintain your garden. Additionally, many pests and diseases that thrive in the summer heat are less active, allowing for healthier plant growth. The cooler weather also enhances the flavors of certain vegetables and prolongs the blooming period of flowers.
One of the best groups of vegetables to plant in the fall are leafy greens. Spinach, for example, thrives in the cooler temperatures of autumn and is a rich source of vitamins A and C. It can withstand light frosts, making it an excellent choice for late-season planting. Kale is another hardy green that can survive cold temperatures and even improves in flavor after a frost. It is a nutrient-dense vegetable that can be harvested well into winter. Lettuce varieties like romaine, butterhead and leaf lettuce also grow quickly in the cooler weather, reducing the risk of bolting, which is common in hot weather.
In addition to vegetables, fall is an excellent time to plant flowers.
Root vegetables are also well-suited for fall planting. Carrots, for instance, benefit from the cooler weather, which enhances their sweetness. It’s best to plant them early enough to mature before the ground freezes. Beets are another excellent choice for a fall harvest, offering both edible roots and greens. Radishes grow rapidly, maturing in as little as three to four weeks, making them perfect for filling in gaps in the garden or for quick harvests.
Brassicas, such as broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, are also ideal for fall planting. Broccoli thrives in cool weather and can be planted in late summer for a fall harvest. It is rich in vitamins C and K and can be harvested even after the first frost. Cauliflower, like broccoli, prefers cooler temperatures and can be planted in late summer. Although it requires a bit more care, it rewards gardeners with delicious heads. Brussels sprouts take longer to mature, so it's best to plant them in mid-summer for a fall harvest. The flavor of Brussels sprouts improves after a frost, making them a perfect autumn vegetable.
Other vegetables, such as garlic and onions, also do well when planted in the fall. Garlic is ideally planted in the fall for a harvest the following summer. The cloves should be planted in well-drained soil and mulched heavily to protect them during the winter. Both onions and shallots can be planted in the fall. They will establish roots before winter and grow vigorously in the spring.
In addition to vegetables, fall is an excellent time to plant flowers. Pansies and violas are hardy, cool-season flowers that can add vibrant colors to your garden. They can survive light frosts and bloom well into the autumn months. Mums, or chrysanthemums, are another quintessential fall flower, available in a wide range of colors. They can be planted in late summer or early fall and will bloom throughout the season. Asters, with their beautiful daisy-like flowers, bloom in late summer and fall. They are available in various shades of blue, purple and pink, providing a stunning contrast to the autumn foliage. Marigolds can thrive in the cooler temperatures of fall, adding bright, warm hues to the garden, and they are also excellent for deterring pests. Ornamental kale and cabbage are grown for their striking foliage rather than their flowers. They add a unique texture and color to the garden and can tolerate frosts, making them perfect for fall.
To ensure successful fall planting, it is essential to choose the right varieties of vegetables and flowers. Select those that are suited for fall planting and have shorter growing periods to ensure they mature before the first hard frost. After the summer harvest, replenish the soil with compost or organic matter to provide nutrients for the new plants. Loosen the soil and remove any weeds. Timing is crucial for fall planting; as a general rule, start planting fall vegetables six to eight weeks before the first expected frost. Flowers like mums and pansies can be planted as soon as the weather cools. While cooler temperatures reduce evaporation, it’s still essential to water regularly, especially during dry spells. Water in the morning to avoid prolonged moisture on the leaves, which can lead to disease. As temperatures drop, protect sensitive plants with row covers or mulch. This will help extend the growing season and protect the roots from freezing.
Fall planting offers a rewarding way to extend the gardening season and enjoy a bountiful harvest of vegetables and beautiful blooms. By choosing the right plants and providing proper care, you can create a vibrant and productive garden that lasts well into the cooler months. Whether you’re growing nutritious leafy greens, delicious root vegetables or colorful flowers, fall is a season full of gardening potential. So, grab your gardening tools and embrace the crisp air — there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the delights of growing your own food and flowers!

BUYING VS. RENTING: Which is Right for You?
Exploring the benefits and drawbacks of buying and renting a home to help you make the best decision
by THOMAS WILLIAMS
The decision between buying and renting a home is one of the most significant financial choices many people will face. This decision is influenced by various factors, including financial stability, lifestyle preferences and long-term goals. Both options come with distinct advantages and disadvantages, making it essential to evaluate which path aligns best with your current situation and future plans.
One of the most compelling reasons to buy a home is the potential for long-term financial gain. When you purchase a property, you are building equity as you pay down your mortgage, which can increase your net worth over time. Real estate has historically appreciated in value, providing homeowners with the opportunity to sell at a profit. Additionally, owning a home allows for more predictability in housing costs, as mortgage payments can be fixed over the life of the loan, unlike rent, which can increase annually. Homeowners also benefit from tax deductions on mortgage interest and property taxes, which can significantly reduce taxable income.
However, buying a home also comes with significant responsibilities and costs. Upfront expenses — such as the down payment, closing costs and moving expenses — can be substantial. Homeownership also requires ongoing costs, including maintenance, repairs, property taxes and homeowners insurance. These expenses can be unpredictable and sometimes costly, particularly if major repairs are needed. Moreover, owning a home reduces flexibility, as selling a property can be time-consuming and expensive. This lack of mobility can be a disadvantage for those who may need to relocate for work or personal reasons.

On the other hand, renting offers a level of flexibility and lower upfront costs that can be appealing —especially for those who are not ready to settle down in one place. Renters are not responsible for property maintenance and repairs, as these are typically covered by the landlord. This can save money and reduce stress, particularly for those who are not handy or do not want to manage home maintenance. Renting also allows for greater flexibility in terms of relocating, as leases usually last one year, making it easier to move for a new job or other life changes.
However, renting does have its drawbacks. Unlike homeowners, renters do not build equity or benefit from property appreciation. Monthly rent payments do not contribute to an asset that can grow in value over time. Additionally, renters are subject to the possibility of rent increases, which can strain finances. Renters may also face restrictions on how they can modify or personalize their living space, as landlords often have rules regarding changes to the property. Furthermore, there is less stability in renting, as tenants may have to move if the landlord decides to sell the property or not renew the lease.
Deciding whether to buy or rent depends on several factors, including your financial situation, lifestyle and long-term plans. If you have a stable income, can afford the upfront costs and plan to stay in one place for several years, buying a home may be a wise investment. It offers the potential for long-term financial growth and the satisfaction of owning your own space. On the other hand, if you value flexibility, are uncertain about your long-term plans or are not ready for the responsibilities of homeownership, renting may be the better choice. It provides the ability to move without the burden of selling a property and avoids the costs and responsibilities associated with owning a home.
Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of buying versus renting. It is essential to carefully consider your financial health, lifestyle preferences and future goals. Consulting with a financial advisor or real estate professional can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed decision.
Whether you choose to buy or rent, the most important thing is to find a living situation that aligns with your personal and financial goals, providing you with stability and satisfaction.

A BOATLOAD ON LAKE PEND OREILLE
THE MANY BOATS THAT FARED THESE WATERS
At the peak of this steamboat and ferry age, there would not be 5 or 20 on the water, but close to 100. Other lakes nationwide also had steamboats and ferries, including neighboring Lake Coeur d’Alene. Still, most had only half as many steamboats as were seen on Lake Pend Oreille.
Each ferry and steamboat had a job transporting goods, resources, mail, people, providing entertainment, and more. What a glorious scene that would have been to see.
